Maiden Of The Week

Wagner (AUS) 3 c Bernardini – Ringstrasse by Redoute’s Choice

Wagner left his seven opponents trailing when recording his first win in four starts in the opening Everest Carnival Maiden Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury on Wednesday, beating Nicco Lad (Nicconi) by three lengths, with a head back to Vendome (O’Reilly) in third, in a time of 1:04.89.

The Godolphin-raced colt was impressive in winning, resuming after placings at his first three starts and having recorded his fourth trial win at Rosehill. He settled in fourth, behind a good tempo, improved nearing the home turn, dashed clear at the 200 metre mark and then went on to score easily.

A Darley homebred, Wagner has an exceptional pedigree as he is the third winner and fourth foal out of Ringstrasse (Redoute’s Choice), who is a three-quarters sister to dual Australian champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Group 3 winner Viennese (Redoute’s Choice).

Ringstrasse herself is a sister to the smart Redoutable Heart, who was second in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2020m) at Doomben. Ringstrasse is also a half-sister to Za Zi Ba (All Too Hard), a Listed-placed mare who took out a Benchmark 78 handicap (1100m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

They in turn are out of the Listed-placed Wiener (More Than Ready), a daughter of blue hen Snippets’ Lass (Snippets), most famous as the dam of Snitzel and the late Yarraman Park Stud-based sire Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock).

Ringstrasse missed in 2016, has a yearling colt by Dissident (Sebring) and was covered by Astern (Medaglia D’Oro) last November.
