Mid-September Cranbourne trial winner Bella Rosa, thrust her nose in front near the line for a game win on debut in the Bumble Stakes (registered as Ottawa Stakes) (Gr 3, 1000m)  on Tuesday.

Racing in heavy rain, Bella Rosa was always among the leading group, narrowly headed at the crossing and was not asked for her effort by jockey Mark Zahra until the 300 metres. With a few shakes she responded, got within a neck of the leader inside the 100 metres, and eventually levelled up at the 50 metres, fighting gamely to score by a half-head in a winning time of 59.61.

Bella Rosa earned $91,500 in prize-money for Tuesday’s win and became the first stakes winner and one of three winners for the Listed scorer Swiss Rose (Thorn Park), who is a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Prom Queen (Super Easy).

Bella Rosa’s third dam Final Claus (Christmas Tree) is also the dam of classy juvenile, the Group 2 winner Catnipped (Rory’s Jester) and the stakes-placed Finishing School (Royal Academy) and Wyndam Tycoon (Scenic).

Swiss Rose has a yearling colt by Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) and foaled a filly by the same former Darley shuttler last week.

Bella Rosa is also the 85th stakes winner for Arrowfield Stud’s dual champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who is also responsible for 13 Group 1 winners including Redzel, Estijaab, Russian Revolution and Trapeze Artist.

Snitzel stands for a career-high fee of $220,000 (inc GST) in 2018, the most expensive advertised stallion in Australia this year.
