Quarantine Diary

Day Seven – Melbourne Cup Contenders Out On Side Hill

The Alain Couetil-trained and Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock-raced Tiberian and the Hughie Morrison-trained Marmelo both arrived in quarantine having won their last appearances at Deauville, with the latter having taken out the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) on 20 August and Tiberian the Grand Prix de Deauville (Gr 2, 2500m) a week later.

Meanwhile, the Andreas Wohler-trained and Australian Bloodstock-raced Red Cardinal (Montjeu) also put in a piece of fast work alongside stablemate Garcia (Paco Boy) as connections look to win a second Melbourne Cup, having taken out the Flemington showpiece in 2014 with Protectionist (Monsun).

Also working on Side Hill was the Hugo Palmer-trained Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs), last seen running a fine second in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5.5f), who looked in good condition yesterday afternoon and he has been earmarked for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup in November. He was accompanied by Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor), who looks set to join the Ciaron Maher stable upon arrival in Australia.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Steel Of Madrid (Lope De Vega) looked in good shape as he cantered gently round side hill. Steel Of Madrid won the Earl Of Sefton (Gr 3, 1m1f) earlier on in the season when trained by Richard Hannon.

International Racehorse Transport’s managing director Jim Paltridge told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday afternoon said: “All the piroplasmosis bloods came back today (yesterday) negative, so that’s really good. We’ve still got some results to come back and they will do the last nasal swabs for the flu on Monday.”
