Maiden Of The Week

Mulk (AUS)

The Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old colt Mulk followed placings in four of his first six starts with an impressive win over older opposition here. He began well from barrier four and was soon crossed to the front by jockey Damien Oliver.

He settled well and gradually lifted the pace nearing the 600 metre mark. With 200 metres left to travel he began to increase his advantage and was not threatened from that point, eventually winning by a comfortable three lengths, in a time of 1:25.96.

Mulk is out of the winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Riptide, whose two other named foals to race have all been winners.

Riptide herself is a three-quarters sister to Group Two winner Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and Group Three winner Kulgrinda (Exceed And Excel), while she is also a half-sister Listed winner and Group Three-placed gelding Cross Current (Keltrice) and River Tribe (Umatilla), who produced 2010 Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Willow Creek (Tale Of The Cat).

Further back the colt is from the same family as Group One winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky) and Group Two winners First Command (Commands) and Oneworld (Danehill Dancer).

In 2015 Riptide produced a colt by Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) before producing a colt by Lonhro (Octagonal) and was most recently served by Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry).

Darley shuttler Sepoy, whose oldest crop are three-year-olds, stands at Kelvinside where his fee for 2017 is $16,500 (inc GST) down from $33,000 (inc GST) last season.
