The Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) may not have produced a Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) contender this year, but its result was no less significant as it marked the first stakes winner for high-profile Arrowfield stallion The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).

In an impressive display of class and speed, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Autumn Ballet made her own history in becoming the first debutant to win the Canberra feature, posting an emphatic two-length victory over her stablemate The Years (Time Test).

Settling in fifth position, the Tim Clark-ridden Autumn Ballet made her challenge with 300 metres to run, drawing clear inside the last 100 metres to score with aplomb.

“Gai is here to break records. Gai and Adrian, what a terrific partnership, to be able to get this filly to the race and win first-up” stable representative Neil Paine said.

“Our stable is enjoying a terrific run with the two-year-olds. Tim rode that beautiful and we got the quinella.”

Autumn Ballet was a $340,000 purchase for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in conjunction with Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter sale.

The daughter of The Autumn Sun is the second winner from as many to race out of the Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Grisi, herself a half-sister to Meydan Zabeel Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Zakouski (Shamardal), Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner and Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) runner-up Albrecht (Redoute’s Choice) and French Group 3 winner King’s Command (Dubawi).

Grisi’s dam, O’Giselle (Octagonal), is a sister to champion racehorse and Darley sire Lonhro (Octagonal).

A full-sister to the Autumn Ballet will be offered by Arrowfield Stud at next month’s Inglis Easter yearling sale. She is catalogued as Lot 157. Grisi foaled a colt by The Autumn Sun last spring.

The Autumn Sun stands at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).
