Boognish
TRAINER: Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea
RACE: H C Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m)
The Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea-trained Boognish (Sooboog) will bid to take the step up to stakes company in her stride today as she tackles the H C Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville.
Having finished an eight-length seventh in a 1000-metre barrier trial at Murray Bridge on February 6, the three-year-old daughter of Kitchwin Hills stallion Sooboog (Snitzel) proved a completely different proposition on her debut in a 1200-metre maiden at the same track late last month, leading right from the outset and impressively powering clear of runner-up Jabbin’ Away (Fighting Sun) to score by five lengths.
Originally picked up for just $25,000 by Edinburgh Park Stud at the 2020 Inglis November (Late) Online Sale, the filly was then bought for $180,000 by Will Clarken, Suman Hedge Bloodstock and David Jolly when re-offered by the stud at the 2021 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, making her the equal third-highest-priced yearling by her sire.
Now fast-tracked to stakes company, Boognish will take on rivals that include Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy), a dual winner who finished a narrow runner-up in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in February, and last-start Benchmark 64 scorer Caste (Sir Prancealot).
Boognish is the twelfth winner from the same number of foals to come out of the Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled) mare Regrowth, a three-time winner from nine career starts, including the Queen Adelaide Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Waltzing Lily Quality (Listed, 1100m).
This makes her a half-sister to Marsh Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Colour (More Than Ready), the dam of stakes-placed winners Chamarel (Exceed and Excel) and Dathanna (Dubawi), while another one of her half-sisters Munhro (Lonhro), is the dam of ATC Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) winner and Group 1 placegetter Derryn (Hinchinbrook), who now stands at Grangewilliam Stud.
From the family of Snippets (Lunchtime) and Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Rewgrowth received an honourable pension after foaling Boognish and missing to Shalaa (Invincible Spirit).
