ANZ News and two other independent racing media organisations have recently received correspondence from Racing NSW legal counsel in response to coverage of governance issues in New South Wales thoroughbred racing.

Racing participants are entitled to expect that questions about governance and accountability can be asked and answered in an open and transparent manner. Independent media exists to do exactly that job: to report fairly, to scrutinise decision-making and to reflect the concerns of owners, trainers, breeders, employees and fans.

Defamation law has an important role in correcting genuinely false and damaging reporting. At the same time, frequent resort to legal correspondence in response to good-faith, evidence-based journalism on matters of governance can have a chilling effect on scrutiny and may cause stakeholders to think twice before speaking openly about the state of their industry.

Across our outlets, we routinely seek comment, publish responses and correct material promptly where error is shown. On a number of occasions our requests for information or clarification have not been answered. We wish to engage constructively with Racing NSW, its leadership and every other participant in the sport – including by publishing their views in their own words.

We are committed to continuing to report responsibly on issues that matter to the future of Australian racing and breeding, which faces profound risks. Robust journalism and open debate are essential if the industry is to prosper. Over-reliance on legal pressure in response to fair reporting can, in practice, discourage that scrutiny and undermine that mission.

We encourage anyone with a stake in the industry’s future to support an environment in which questions can be asked and answered without fear.

‘Nothing short of disgraceful’ – international downgrade threat sparks outrage across Australian industry

The peak breeding body in the industry's heartland of NSW has called on the Racing NSW (RNSW) board to “stand down” amidst concerns that Australia could be demoted from Part I of the international Blue Book.

Thoroughbred Breeders NSW president Hamish Esplin made the call as Australia’s black type situation - a suite of NSW races given domestic upgrades that the Asian Racing Federation (ARF) has not recognised under the international pattern - continues to be at an impasse.

A RNSW spokesman dismissed Esplin’s call.

It comes as the ARF has also stated races including Randwick’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), and Perth’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) were eligible to be downgraded, based on ratings data.

And it said Australia’s oldest feature - the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) - should be subject to a warning of a potential downgrade, along with fellow top-tier events in the Queensland Derby (2400m), the SAJC Australasian Oaks (2000m) and WATC Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

The ARF has made very clear in a letter to Racing Australia (RA), seen by ANZ News, that the idea of the country being demoted to Part II of the Blue Book if it doesn’t institute an approved system of black type governance - once considered fanciful by many - is a real possibility if its concerns are not addressed.

Such a scenario would put Australia on a par with jurisdictions such as Malaysia, India, Panama and Puerto Rico in that all its black type races would be recognised globally as merely “Listed”.

Among many ramifications, industry stakeholders fear this would weaken the value of Australian stock as foreign investors lose confidence in Australian racing, while also dissuading northern hemisphere stud farms from shuttling stallions to the country.

A further possibility is that the ARF’s Asian Pattern Committee (APC) could begin making decisions by itself on Australian black type status, with RA’s representatives not allowed to vote.

While the ARF's formal letter was directed at Racing Australia as the national governing body for black type, Racing NSW’s unilateral upgrades have become the most visible flashpoint in the wider governance dispute.

It comes after an initial batch of 17 NSW races - which later grew to 18 - were listed as upgraded to as high as Group 2 by RA and RNSW, despite the fact there has not been a "properly functioning black-type quality control system in Australia for many years", according to the ARF letter.

Most of those races have now been run twice while advertised under their NSW upgrades, despite the ARF’s Asian Pattern Committee (APC) not recognising the status changes of at least the first 17 under its ground rules. This non-recognition is due to the absence of an Australian black type committee which complies with the APC’s ground rules.

Arion - the southern hemisphere’s largest supplier of pedigree information - has followed the Blue Book in not recognising the upgrades, and they are therefore not reflected in Australasian sales catalogues.

What's On

But - aside from perhaps disappointing connections who may have hoped for sales catalogue value-boosts for any winners or placegetters of the 18 races and their relatives - the current state of confusion in Australia was evident at a recent high-profile overseas auction, where a filly carried a black type update in error since her half-brother ran third in one of the NSW 18.

The ARF has called on RA to put its house in order over the black type situation.

In a six-page letter to RA dated October 16, the Federation reported its executive council, at its meeting in Paris on October 3, discussed its “long-standing concerns” about “quality control for black-type races in Australia”.

It said the APC “recommended that it not consider applications from Australia, nor recognise changes in race status of which Racing Australia gives notice” until RA adopted two measures.

The first is to institute new black type guidelines “in a form compliant with the APC Ground Rules”. The second is that a “national pattern committee, or equivalent body overseeing black type quality control, is operational”.

In October last year, RA announced it had implemented a new system, saying “the Australian Pattern has been reviewed to form the new ‘Australian Black Type Guidelines’”.

Based mainly on race ratings, it would replace the black type pattern committee system which had been in place since the late 1970s, taking “a modern approach” to Australia’s unique racing environment, whilst also recognising, under the country’s federated system of states, any “potential implications from an Australian competition law perspective”.

Opponents said the new system lacked the discretionary powers fundamental to black type committees around the world. Some also said if the old black type committee had contravened competition laws, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) would have taken action against it previously.

In any event, the “Black Type Guidelines” have not met the approval of the ARF’s executive council.

In its letter to RA, it said its executive council felt “there has not been a properly functioning black type quality control system in Australia for many years, possibly since as far back as 2017/18. This has presented a raft of issues for the ARF to deal with in that period”.

It said the executive council’s concerns were three-fold:

  • that RA’s “black type guidelines unacceptably depart from the APC Ground Rules”.

  • that quality control of Australian black type races “is not overseen by an appropriate body”.

  • and (concerns over) “the failure of Australian races to have been suitably upgraded and downgraded in recent years”.

The letter said the ARF and APC had, in June and July this year, undertaken “extensive work to assist RA to develop revised guidelines” which would comply with both APC ground rules and Australian competition law.

RA had in July provided the ARF with revised guidelines and draft charters for a “Black Type Development Committee”, a “Black Type Advisory Group”, and the “Australian Classification Committee”, the letter said.

However, the executive council said it understood that the gridlocked RA “has not approved the 2025 Guidelines, such that those which remain in force are the 2024 Guidelines”, which contained “significant deficiencies”.

The letter added that “related to the deficiencies in the 2024 Guidelines is the absence of a body which satisfactorily oversees black type quality control in Australia”.

“The ARF and RA have engaged in significant discussion and correspondence about this issue,” the letter said.

Addressing Australia’s “failure to re-grade races”, the letter said it appeared to the ARF, based on race ratings data, that “numerous” Australian races did not currently carry appropriate black type status.

It said the last Australian race downgrade had occurred in August 2012, since which time there had been 79 races upgraded, including seven to Group 1.

“If Australian black type races do not meet the parameters specified by the APC Ground Rules, they should be subject to warning letters and downgrades …” the letter said.

It said based on the information provided by RA, “we consider the following seven races would be eligible for downgrade”, having failed to satisfy the APC ground rules:

Group 1: ATC Sydney Cup, ATC The Metropolitan, the WATC Railway Stakes.

Group 2: Adelaide Cup, WATC Derby, MRC Herbert Power Stakes

Group 3: Launceston Cup

The ARF added a further ten races “should be subject to warning letters” about potential downgrades - including the Group 1 Victoria Derby, Queensland Derby, Australasian Oaks and WATC Winterbottom Stakes.

That list also included the Group 2 Brisbane Cup, and Caulfield’s Autumn Classic.

Under “potential actions”, the ARF gave RA until November 14 to “finalise and approve guidelines” which addressed its concerns; establish any necessary bodies to “give effect to the guidelines approved”; issue warning letters and; “commit to downgrading races, as necessary, where they do not meet relevant parameters”.

It is not clear whether the ARF did receive a written response from RA by the November 14 deadline, though one source said RA might have asked for an extension. ANZ’s call to RA CEO Paul Eriksson seeking clarity on this matter received no response.

The letter said that “failing satisfaction”, the APC may move to “restore effective black type quality control for Australian races” by not considering any of RA’s applications on gradings, and may begin making decisions on Australian Group status itself.

It said those decisions would “require the approval of the majority of the APC, with RA not being permitted to vote”.

The ARF noted the APC’s ground rules stated decisions relating to status below Group 1 were made by national bodies - except in “exceptional circumstances”. However, it said it considered its list of grievances to “constitute the requisite exceptional circumstances”.

Most worryingly for the Australian industry, the letter, signed off by ARF’s Hong Kong-based secretary-general Andrew Harding, concluded:

“RA may be required to show cause as to why the APC should not recommend to the IRPAC, that it endorse, and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers, that it ratify, that Australia be demoted from Part I of the Blue Book until such time as it has in place a black type system which addresses the concerns set out above.

“The ARF recognises that the demotion of Australia from Part I of the Blue Book would have very significant consequences not only for RA, but the entire racing and breeding industry in Australia, the ARF region and potentially beyond.”

Esplin said considering the ARF’s letter and the threat to demote Australia to Part II of the Blue Book, the country’s racing administrators had “placed the Australian breeding industry in its most fraught position in its more than 150-year history”.

Amid fears of the impact of a loss of confidence globally in the Australian breeding industry, Esplin told ANZ: “It is nothing short of disgraceful that the administrators of racing in this country have put the breeding industry across Australia, the livelihoods of everyone involved in a breeding farm, and the value of all Australian bloodstock in serious jeopardy.”

He added: “At no time since that letter was received by RA has Racing NSW informed me, on behalf of the breeders of NSW, either through official channels such as the Racing Industry Consultation Group, or informal means, that RA had to reply to that letter from the APC before November 14 assuaging their concerns about the future of the pattern in this country.

“I learnt of it like most things in this industry, from other people and by reading the media.”

Esplin turned his focus to NSW, the state with the upgraded races that are among the ARF’s concerns.

"From our viewpoint, we have not seen that Racing NSW wants to engage meaningfully with us. We have not seen that it considers the views of its stakeholders. For those reasons, we call for the board to stand down,” said Esplin.

“The horse industry, and especially the breeding industry, like many other industries, relies largely on confidence; confidence that there will be buyers for your yearling, confidence that those who host races can do it competently.

“Confidence that in the continued globalisation of the industry, the involvement of foreign countries as investors in our country will continue.

The board of TBNSW and the significant number of stakeholders I’ve spoken to in recent weeks, have suddenly, because of the actions of RNSW and RA, lost that confidence

Hamish Esplin

“The board of TBNSW and the significant number of stakeholders I’ve spoken to in recent weeks, have suddenly, because of the actions of RNSW and RA, lost that confidence.”

In a statement, an RNSW spokesperson rejected Esplin’s comments.

“It is a ridiculous call to ask the Board of the most successful jurisdiction in Australia, with daylight second, to resign,” the spokesperson said.

“It shows you exactly why you need a strong body such as Racing NSW to represent the interests of the industry as a whole and not just vested and selfish self-interest groups.

“This stunt unfortunately makes his organisation look uncredible as they are driven by agendas rather than the good of the industry.

“When all the correct facts come out and not selective reporting, Mr Esplin is going to look even sillier.”

One prominent breeder said finding a resolution to the current black type impasse - and thus fortifying the economic strength of the Australian industry - was of critical importance, not just to Australia but to the thoroughbred industry in the northern hemisphere.

“This is of importance to the northern hemisphere,” said the breeder, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Australia is the most important jurisdiction for breeding in the southern hemisphere.

“We buy more mares from the northern hemisphere than anyone else. We’re the ones buying at Tattersalls, Arqana, Goffs, Keeneland.

“We’re shuttling all the northern hemisphere stallions, and we’re buying 750 tried horses from the northern hemisphere at a high level each year.

“So, we’re much more important economically to the northern hemisphere than, say, Hong Kong, which doesn’t breed horses.

“Because of that interdependence, anything that happens in the pattern in Australia has a huge impact internationally. So if you impact the pattern in Australia, you impact the pattern internationally, and that’s what administrators in the northern hemisphere need to realise. And they do realise it, and so they’re very concerned about the impasse that’s occurred here.”

In a further statement issued last Friday, Racing NSW said: “Racing NSW wishes to correct the record in respect of the widespread misinformation surrounding the status of Black Type Guidelines and the Pattern in Australia.

“Racing NSW strongly supports the implementation of the Asian Pattern Committee endorsed Black Type Guidelines and the creation of an Independent Black Type Advisory Group (BTAG) to ensure expert, impartial oversight of all key aspects of the Pattern and to safeguard the integrity, fairness and credibility of Australia’s black type system.”

It added: "The current situation is not the result of any action taken by Racing NSW. Instead it stems from Racing Australia's decision not to approve the internationally endorsed revisions.”

RA is the peak national body for racing in Australia, with responsibilities including regulating the Australian breeding and racing industry by administering the Australian Rules of Racing and the Rules of the Australian Stud book.

Its board of directors is composed of representatives from the Principal Racing Authority of each of the five major states, with one representative for the smaller jurisdictions of Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory combined.

NSW and Victoria have the power of veto on decisions taken by RA.

RNSW, which sends a nominated director to sit on the RA board, is the regulating body for thoroughbred racing in NSW.

Its mission statement on its website says its role is: “To provide independent, strong and united leadership in the development and enhancement of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry, which will lead to the maintenance of confidence in the integrity of the industry, improvement in its competitive position and increased financial returns to constituent stakeholders.”

RNSW’s website details a list of six of its functions including “to control, supervise and regulate horse racing in the State”, to enact policies conducive to the promotion, development and welfare of the racing industry in the state, and “functions with respect to the insuring of participants in the horse racing industry”.

One source with intimate knowledge of the subject said “many people” across the industry hoped cool heads would prevail and the doomsday crisis would be averted.

“When push comes to shove, they’re all big boys. Everyone might have a different view on the broader themes, but I think people just want to have the pattern mess sorted out,” the source said.

Patonga tops Inglis Digital December (Early) Online Sale at $255,000

Patonga (Credit: XXX)

Untapped three-year-old Patonga (Written Tycoon) topped the Inglis Digital December (Early) Online Sale on Wednesday, with Hong Kong-based buyers securing the colt for $255,000.

Offered by Coolmore, the Chris Waller-trained son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) was purchased by the Jolly Time Syndicate and will continue his career in Hong Kong. Patonga has shown promise in three outings, producing a win and a second placing.

“Patonga is yet another talented young horse with considerable upside that we have offered through Inglis Digital,’’ Coolmore racing manager John Kennedy said.

“We wish his new owners the very best of luck with him and hope he can emulate the likes of Imperial Force, Caballus and Zarastro as former success stories for Coolmore’s Inglis Digital offerings.’’

A spokesperson for the Jolly Time Syndicate said: “This is for the syndicate permit in Hong Kong and we look forward to seeing how he settles into Hong Kong, although we haven’t decided on a trainer yet.

“I’m really happy with the Inglis Digital platform, there’s frequently Hong Kong-qualified horses to choose from so that makes each catalogue a ‘can’t miss’ for us.’’

The second-top lot of the sale was four-year-old mare Celestial Bling (Capitalist), offered by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. She was knocked down to Nocab Racing and Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $220,000 and will head to Newgate Farm to be covered next breeding season.

“At this stage we’re looking at Extreme Choice or Farnan for her first cover…we believe she has the makings of a beautiful broodmare,” Nocab’s Steve Bacon said.

Bott added: “She is a high-quality breeding prospect and the Bacon family have bought themselves an outstanding young broodmare.”

The sales of Patonga, Celestial Bling and Grinzinger Champ (Wootton Bassett) ($115,000) brought the number of $100,000-plus transactions on Inglis Digital this year to 125. The December (Early) Sale grossed $2,884,600.

Entries for the December (Late) Sale, running December 12–17, are now open until midnight on December 10. To enter, click here.

Pure Excess primed for Northerly Stakes challenge

Three-year-old filly Pure Excess (Exceedance) is set to be a major contender in Saturday’s Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) in Perth, with Steven Parnham confident she can uphold the strong record of her age group in the weight-for-age feature. Parnham partnered Pure Excess to her first win in last month’s Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and is backing her to go close in the $1.5 million event. "I've won four Northerlys, three of them on three-year-olds, and I've also run a second, a third and a fifth on three-year-olds, so I know the journey and what it takes and I think this filly has it," he said. Parnham will ride at 50 kilograms, managing his weight carefully to be at peak fitness. "The key is keeping my hydration levels right up. Adrenalin does take you a long way and you find your body can do amazing things, but I'd like to get there in the best shape I can," he said.

Morton fields trio for Ascot feature

Dan Morton will saddle three runners in Saturday’s Northerly Stakes as he chases a first major win in one of his home state’s elite races. Morton’s team includes unbeaten gelding King Of Light (Earthlight), three-year-old filly Pure Excess, and In Good Order (American Pharoah). King Of Light, to be ridden by William Pike, will tackle open company for the first time, seeking a sixth straight win. "He's a mint horse to train, so laid back and gets the job done," Morton told Racing WA. "He really raises the bar come race day. He's an exciting horse and he's got to raise the bar again on Saturday, but he's doing everything right and is a deserved favourite, but he's going to have to take another big step." King Of Light secured his fifth consecutive victory in the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ascot on November 22. "So far, so good and there's only a few more nervous sleeps until Saturday, but he doesn't give us too many headaches," Morton said. "He's a happy horse." Of Pure Excess, he said "She's a lighter filly and the three-week gap between runs is ideal for her. We've been able to keep her ticking over and she's been able to have a few maintenance gallops and with 50 kilos, she can show up." In Good Order lines up off a ninth in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on November 22 and is being prepared for the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) on January 1. "He's a happy horse and in good order as he's starting to get towards peak fitness," Morton added.

Lubrication to tackle George Moore Stakes

Lubrication (I Am Invincible) will aim for his first black type success when he lines up in Saturday’s George Moore Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Doomben, following an outstanding first-up performance. The gelding claimed the biggest win of his career in May, taking out the $1 million The Archer (1300m) at Rockhampton and defeating subsequent Group 1 winner Transatlantic (Snitzel). While that race remains a longer-term target, Matt Dunn is focused on the George Moore Stakes. "He really stepped up last prep and I think he's come back a bit better," the trainer said. "He has never run as well as that first-up in his life. He'd had five first-up goes and run third once. He had to go all the way back from a crumby gate and he finished his race off really well. He just missed the bob. He's going great, and I think he'll be very competitive on Saturday." Lubrication has an excellent record over Doomben’s 1200-metre course, with two wins and three placings from eight starts. Dunn believes the gelding could make a mark over the summer, possibly returning to defend his title in The Archer. "Things need to fall into place in terms of the timing of his prep but certainly, he's got a slot and if it fits in well we'll be going there again for sure," he said.

Rosehill meeting shifted to Sunday amid extreme heat forecast

The meeting scheduled to take place at Rosehill on Saturday has been transferred to Sunday, with Racing NSW acting on forecasts of extreme heat in Sydney’s west. Racing NSW officials have monitored conditions throughout the week, and with predictions still showing temperatures climbing beyond 40 degrees on Saturday, chief steward Tom Moxon confirmed the decision to postpone. "We have reviewed that forecast again this morning and unfortunately, there hasn't been much of a variation to those forecasts," Moxon told Sydney's Sky Sports Radio. "The decision has been made this morning to transfer the meeting to Sunday, still at Rosehill Gardens where the forecast is for more favourable conditions with temperatures around the mid to high 20s." Acceptances for the ten-race program will proceed as scheduled, with race times to be arranged around the existing Hawkesbury meeting. "We're mindful we already have a Hawkesbury meeting scheduled for Sunday also, so we will have to organise times for Rosehill around that Hawkesbury meeting," Moxon said. While high temperatures are also expected in Sydney on Friday, the Randwick Kensington twilight meeting is unlikely to be affected. A country program at Mudgee is also set to proceed, with conditions to be closely monitored.

Pfieffer wary ahead of Whinchat’s return

David Pfieffer (Credit: Racing Photos)

David Pfieffer is keeping expectations measured ahead of Whinchat’s (Russian Revolution) return at Rosehill, hoping the best version of the enigmatic sprinter appears when he resumes on Sunday. The six-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing unplaced in July’s Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m), closing out a preparation that swung from a narrow Listed placing at Scone and a solid fifth behind Headley Grange (Exosphere) at Randwick. A known barrier rogue, Pfieffer admits predictability isn’t part of the package with the gelding. "Ask me after the race and we'll find out," he said of Whinchat’s chances. “We have done so much work on him and it hasn't made a difference. But he is working great. His trials have been super. Speed is usually the key for him. If he can get to the front on his own, he’s going to always be a danger." Meanwhile, Pfieffer unveiled a promising youngster at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, with Zoustar (Northern Meteor) gelding Ice Kool leading throughout for a strong debut win over 1000 metres. The stable will now consider a Queensland target. "He’s shown us he's got ability. He’s going to go through his grades quickly and there's a three-year-old race at the Gold Coast that might catch our attention," Pfieffer said. "The Sunlight is what I'm eyeing off. He's just needed time to mature and the time we have given him has worked out in our favour." The $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight (1100m) will be run at the Gold Coast on January 10.

Bedggood pair well-drawn in open Ballarat Cup

Gavin Bedggood will take a strong hand into Saturday’s Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m), with stablemates Casino Seventeen (Casino Prince) and Kingswood (Roaring Lion) both coming up with favourable draws. Fresh from his Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) victory last weekend, Casino Seventeen will back up from barrier two with Harry Coffey to ride. Kingswood, scratched from the Eclipse in favour of this assignment, has drawn gate six and reunites with John Allen. They face 13 rivals, including last year’s winner Berkeley Square (Territories), who has work to do from barrier 14. Saint George (Roaring Lion) (15) and Shaiyhar (Camelot) (13) also drew wide. Poison Chalice (Savabeel) (4), fourth in this race 12 months ago, and Detonator Jack (Jakkalberry) (9) are both set to back up after disappointing behind Casino Seventeen in the Eclipse. Statuario (D’Argento) (7) and South Australian visitor Air Assault (Justify) (1) were among the more fortunate at the draw for what shapes as a typically open edition of the Ballarat Cup.

Lane returns to Victoria after Japan success

Damian Lane will return to Victorian racing on Saturday at Ballarat after another fruitful stint in Japan. Lane spent most of November riding in Japan, skipping Victoria Derby Day to compete in Tokyo and riding abroad for the past three weekends. His Japanese campaign was again highly successful, concluding his time there in 2025 with a total of 38 winners, making him the year’s most successful visiting foreign jockey ahead of Joao Moreira and Rachel King. The Western Australia-born rider last appeared locally at Flemington’s Champions Day meeting on November 8, where he guided Whisky On The Hill (Ribchester) to victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m). He is booked for five rides at Ballarat on Saturday, headlined by Poison Chalice in the Ballarat Cup. Lane currently sits fifth in the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership with 17 wins, trailing runaway leader Mark Zahra by 19. His return home will be brief as he is set to head back to Asia next weekend to partner Japanese hope Lord Del Rey (Lord Kanaloa) in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on December 14.

Black Storm set for Werribee Cup test

Tim Fitzsimmons is poised to give emerging stayer Black Storm (Caravaggio) his toughest Australian assignment yet in Sunday’s $150,000 Werribee Cup (1600m). The Singapore import, who has missed the top two just once in seven Australian starts, resumed with an impressive win in the Tatura Cup (1450m) on November 22, firming late to score strongly at $3.90 under Teo Nugent. The six-year-old’s performance convinced Fitzsimmons to raise the bar again over the Werribee mile. "We've entered him for the Werribee Cup on Sunday, he gallops on Wednesday and if he works well, we'll be going there," Fitzsimmons told Racing.com. "If I think he needs another week, we'll run him on Pakenham Cup Day, there's a Benchmark 84 for him over a mile there. But at this stage, as long as he works well, we'll be going to the Werribee Cup." Black Storm’s victory followed a sharp Ararat trial, and Fitzsimmons said the Tatura result came as no surprise. He attributes the gelding’s only unplaced run in Australia – a seventh at Flemington before his latest spell – to trainer error after being forced to work forward from a wide draw. Black Storm was still only 3.5 lengths off the winner Too Darn Discreet (Too Darn Hot), encouraging Fitzsimmons to target a broader country cups campaign this preparation.

Onesmoothoperator back in work ahead of autumn targets

Onesmoothoperator (Credit: Racing Photos)

Tim Fitzsimmons is looking ahead with UK import Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In), who is back in work with Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane staying features on the table for an autumn campaign. The 2024 Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) winner was officially transferred to Fitzsimmons after his midfield finish in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), following a decision by long-time trainer and close friend Brian Ellison. A Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) tilt was briefly considered, but the gelding instead went for a spell. "He's had a month-long spell and he spelled really well, so he's ready to come back," Fitzsimmons told Racing.com. "We toyed with the idea of going to Perth, but it was probably just a little bit too soon, he needed a break after the Cup. He'll come back into work and we'll aim him at something in the autumn, exact plans we don't have yet, but there's plenty of options for him. We've got good races for him in Victoria and then we can look at the Adelaide Cup, Sydney Carnival and maybe even the Brisbane Carnival. I don't think he's going to be your standard European horse that takes another prep to get acclimatised: he's already proven down here with the two wins. He settled in well, he likes the climate here and he's done really well in the paddock."

Pinstriped secures Moonee Valley’s Supernova slot

Group 1 winner Pinstriped (Street Boss) will take his place in The Supernova (1400m) after the Moonee Valley Racing Club selected him to fill its slot for the $1 million feature. MVRC earned its position in the race through Jigsaw’s (Manhattan Rain) victory in The Meteorite (1200m) last month, and Enver Jusufovic believes Pinstriped is ready to showcase his true form despite a luckless spring. "It's been a frustrating preparation without much luck and the public probably haven't seen the proper Pinstriped this spring," the trainer told Racing.com. "But he is holding his condition really well and has been working terrific so I'd expect nothing less than a bold showing. I think the Pakenham circumference will really suit him." Reigning Supernova champion Here To Shock (Shocking) and Meteorite runner-up Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) have also been confirmed for Lindsay Park, adding further depth to the 1400-metre contest on December 13. Joe Pride’s star Private Eye (Al Maher) shapes as the early horse to beat. The gelding, who has amassed nearly $13 million in prize-money, will run for Ladbrokes. Taken (Ardrossan), Watchme Win (Harry Angel), Gumdrops (Written Tycoon) and Zou Sensation (Zoustar) are also among the confirmed contenders for the Pakenham showpiece.

St Jean gelding Melek scores strong debut win

Half Yours’s late sire St Jean (Teofilo) was handed his third city winner when Melek produced a strong finish to land the opening maiden over 1600 metres on debut at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday. Prepared by Ciaron Maher, the four-year-old was well-backed late and, under a composed Craig Williams ride, ran down $2.40 favourite Wolfoffitzroystreet (Ghaiyyath) to score by a length. Icaro (Needs Further) finished a further 1.8 lengths away in third. Melek is out of Pure Theatre (Nureyev) mare Regina Coeli, best known for winning two editions of the Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) at Warrnambool. Melek is raced by Maher in partnership with Halo Racing, which includes Janice McKenna, the former owner of Half Yours. Leigh Allen, representing the Maher stable, said the debut success hinted at promising things ahead. "Janice is in the horse along with Ciaron who has a fair chunk, and well done to the team at Ballarat who have done all the work," Allen said. "He's four now, but he's got a bright future." Williams said Melek was well-schooled but gave him a few lively moments early. "He was a bit startled and wanted to run away with me, which was a bit awkward," the winning rider said. "But then he fell into the model of stepping slow, and relaxing. I thought at the 500 metres when he started to reel in the favourite, he had that nice momentum…then he got on the wrong leg turning, which is not unusual in their first start, but then he kept lengthening and he was able to reel them in. It was a good win in the end."

Botanist breaks through at Warwick Farm

Well-bred Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt Botanist delivered a timely pedigree update for his yearling half-sister when he broke through for his maiden win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. One of seven Chris Waller-trained runners in the 1400-metre contest, Botanist was a $900,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Resolute Racing and races in John Stewart’s colours in partnership with Coolmore. The three-year-old brought race fitness into his third start and was given a positive front-running ride by Nash Rawiller. He improved on his second at Kembla Grange, holding on strongly to score by 0.8 lengths over Miss Lola (Blue Point), with Pink Persuasion (Written Tycoon) another 2.2 lengths away in third. "Whenever you get sent a high-priced horse, there's added pressure and now he’s done the job," stable representative Charlie Duckworth said. “It was a beautiful ride by Nash. He let everyone behind him worry about their positions, while he got on with the task ahead.” The colt is the first winner for Group 3-winning Pierro (Lonhro) mare Tulip, who was Group 1-placed in the 2017 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). Tulip is herself a sister to stakes-winner Les Vampires and a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sacred Eye (High Chaparral), and Coolmore will offer her current yearling filly by Justify (Scat Daddy) as Lot 925 at the 2026 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Sharrock banks on rain as Ladies Man chases Mufhasa Classic repeat

Ladies Man (Credit: Race Images)

Allan Sharrock is hoping forecast conditions at Trentham can offset a deeper field when Ladies Man (Zed) bids for consecutive wins in Saturday’s Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m).The gelding produced a powerful late run to win last year’s edition and heads into this weekend’s race off a similar platform, having finished fourth in the Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) three weeks ago. “He was good at Tauranga, I gave him a pass mark for that, but more importantly he’s gone the right way since, his work on Tuesday was very good,” Sharrock said. “It’s probably a stronger field this year, what with Waitak at the top of his form, La Crique there again and with that other very good mare Legarto as well, so it’s not going to be easy. In our favour is the weather they’ve had in Wellington this week; I think a bit of precipitation and with the track currently rated Heavy 8, that could swing things our way.”

Crocetti ruled out of Concorde Stakes

Saturday’s Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Pukekohe has lost one of its star attractions, with dual Group 1 winner Crocetti (Zacinto) withdrawn after presenting with an elevated temperature on Wednesday morning. Unseen since finishing unplaced in The Quokka (1200m) in April, Crocetti had been set to make his season return in the $120,000 feature. A sharp exhibition gallop at Ellerslie last weekend had marked him as the horse to beat, but his setback has delayed that comeback. “We just found this morning that he had a bit of an elevated temperature,” co-trainer Danny Walker said. “So we had no choice but to pull the pin. It’s always a bit frustrating and disappointing when things like that happen, but that’s the way it goes.” Walker and training partner Arron Tata still expect Crocetti to line up in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham on January 3. “All going well, we’re still hoping to get him down to Wellington for the Telegraph, but we’ll just have to play it by ear in terms of what we do between now and then,” Walker said. “We’ll get him through this first and then take it from there.”

Final Return targeting Ellerslie win

Consistent stayer Final Return (Reliable Man) will return to Ellerslie on New Year’s Day as he searches for a deserved breakthrough at the Auckland track. The gelding has been a regular visitor to Ellerslie, placing four times there, including a third in this year’s Avondale Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). He will step out again for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), having finished fourth in this year’s running of the race. Janelle Millar said the six-year-old’s preference for right-handed racing shapes his program. “He hits himself on his left hind hock, so we have to be careful where we race him,” the trainer said. “He’s better going the Ellerslie way and doesn’t hit himself that way around, it’s just his conformation really.” Final Return underlined that suitability with a determined win in the Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) at Pukekohe last start. “He pulled up really well after that, I was quite surprised and thought it may have knocked him, but it didn’t at all,” Millar said. “He was running around the paddock like a two-year-old and he never does that so he’s obviously going very well. He’s probably the highest-rated three-win horse in New Zealand, he’s very consistent, always tries and will stay all day.”

Wrights celebrate second Jericho Cup win

Ian and Shelley Wright are still pinching themselves after their gallant stayer Farag (Sacred Falls) clinched a second straight victory in the Jericho Cup (4415m). The couple were trackside at Warrnambool to watch the gelding repeat his 2024 heroics. Last year Farag demolished the field by 20 lengths; on Sunday the margin was a more measured 1.5 lengths. “It’s a race we were keen to get involved in from day one and when Farag won last year and another of our horses, Glen Massey, finished third, it was a massive thrill,” Ian Wright said. “Going back and doing it all again was absolutely huge, something that we’re still getting our heads around.” Farag was picked up by the Wrights for $1,000 as an unraced gelding on Gavelhouse, and earned $11,000 in 14 New Zealand starts before being sold into a half-share arrangement with Melbourne racing enthusiast Peter Groidis. Transferred to Aaron Purcell early last year, Farag has since raced 28 times for ten wins and now boasts more than $600,000 in prize-money. “We’ve always liked those staying types; people like us find it hard to compete over the shorter distances, but when it comes to horses with stamina we like to think we’ve got a chance,” Wright said. “We’re still keen on our jumpers and it would be good to think there might be another Farag there as well, but horses like him are never easy to find.”

21 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttler sire St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) registered his 21st individual winner when Art Gallery (2 f ex Fughetta by Dubawi) scored in a seven-furlong restricted novice event at Newcastle on Tuesday. The James Ferguson-trained filly ran on strongly in the closing stages to win at the third attempt by a length and a half over Viking Glory (Cotai Glory) with Okiru (Blue Point) another length away in third. Bred by Watership Down Stud, Art Gallery sold for 42,000gns to David Redvers at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year and races in the colours of Qatar Racing. She is the second foal and second winner out of the unraced Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Fughetta, herself a daughter of four-time Group 1 winner The Fugue (Dansili). St Mark’s Basilica is standing at Coolmore Australia at an unchanged fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Death, taxes and Sadler’s Wells over Dubawi.

That last certainty has been shown to work again with a new stakes winner in Ruska Roma (Super Seth), Pinecliff Racing’s homebred three-year-old filly who took out Caulfield’s Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on Saturday.

Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) runs through the top line of Ruska Roma’s pedigree via High Chaparral-Dundeel-Super Seth. And the filly’s dam Sansa is by Makfi, son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).

Pinecliff’s Jonathan Munz isn’t much known for a profile in the media, but his record as a breeder speaks for itself.

He remains a 20 per cent stake-holder in Waikato Stud sire Super Seth (Dundeel) - who carried Munz’s famed red and white stripes to victory in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and more.

Munz also has the same shareholding in another son of Dundeel (High Chaparral) in Arrowfield Stud’s Castelvecchio, and he’s confident about which broodmare sirelines work with Sadler’s Wells and his descendants, including his greatest son Galileo.

“The Sadler’s Wells - Dubawi cross, and the Galileo - Dubawi cross are two of the best crosses there are,” Munz tells It’s In The Blood. “So you just say Makfi is Dubawi blood, so sending Sansa to that Sadler’s Wells line works.”

The stats are strong.

Looking at the blend on the reverse cross, where it's most prolific, Dubawi over Sadler’s Wells as a damsire runs at 12 per cent stakes winners to runners, with six from 49. Over Galileo it’s stronger at 18 per cent - with 26 stakes victors from 139 runners - including three Group 1 winners. Those include one of the hottest young stallions in Australia just now, Darley shuttler Ghaiyyath.

Dubawi over High Chaparral has one stakes winner from seven runners, at 14 per cent.

Looking back the other way, Dundeel over Dubawi has only had three starters, but they’re all winners, and include a Group 1 victor in Chris Waller’s Militarize.

And Super Seth over Makfi now has five winners from six runners, with two black type victors. Aside from Ruska Roma, they include John O’Shea and Tom Charlton’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Maison Louis.

Better still, Castelvecchio over Makfi has 100 per cent stakes winners to runners. It’s one from one, through Gary Portelli’s mare Verona Rose.

“The good thing about Super Seth,” Munz says, “is he can get those speed horses, he can get two-year-olds, but he’s also had a Randwick Guineas winner [Linebacker], an Australian Guineas winner [Feroce] and Queensland Derby winner.

“He’s got that versatility but he’s certainly getting the horses who’ve got the precocity and the speed.”

Munz highlights also Super Seth’s La Dorada, Te Akau Racing’s filly who won the Karaka 2YO Million (RL, 1200m) and Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

He’s got that versatility but he’s certainly getting the horses who’ve got the precocity and the speed

Jonathan Munz

He also points to the colt he bred in Poetic Champion, who claimed New Zealand’s first two-year-old race of 2023-24 over 950 metres, won a 1200-metre Listed race, and has been three times stakes placed from 1100 metres to 1200 metres.

As for Ruska Roma, who’s now won two of seven for Grahame Begg, Munz went to $300,000 to buy her Chris Waller-trained dam Sansa, through Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2018.

It was decent money for a Wyong maiden winner, but he was keen on the Makfi element.

“Makfi is Dubawi blood, so that’s good blood,” he says. “Makfi is turning out to be a reasonable broodmare sire, and Sansa was from a good speed family.”

As a broodmare sire, Makfi has had 26 stakes winners from 419 runners, at 6.2 per cent.

Sansa hails from a speedy line of lower level stakes victors. Her dam Rosa’s Spur (Flying Spur) won Brisbane’s Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and Scone’s Dark Jewel Classic (Listed, 1400m), and threw as her first foal Members Joy (Hussonet), winner of the VRC Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and Group 2-placed at 1400 metres.

Ruska Roma’s third dam Rosa’s Joy (Rory’s Jester) won her first three starts, all over 1000 metres, including a Flemington Listed and a Caulfield Group 3.

Aside from her third foal Rosa’s Spur, she threw a second stakes victor in first foal Rosarino (Perugino), a filly who won the VRC Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in 2003. Rosarino bore Indian Pacific (Zoustar), a three-time Listed winner who ran a 0.2 length second to Zoutori (Zoustar) in the VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) of 2021.

Ruska Roma’s fourth dam Rosa Linda (Three Legs) was a well proven producer of four stakes winners. Aside from Rosa’s Joy, she left Group 3 winner Rosa’s Image (Rory’s Jester), plus Rosa’s Path (Rory’s Jester) who won one Listed race, and Cohort (Marauding), who won six of them.

Rory’s Jester, in fact, is a force in Ruska Roma’s pedigree, along with Danehill (Danzig).

The first thing that catches the eye is those two stallions are duplicated - and in the same spaces in the fourth generation. Both Super Seth’s dam Salutations (Redoute’s Choice), and Sansa’s dam Rosa’s Spur, are by a Danehill sire out of a Rory’s Jester dam.

This means double Danehill at 4m x 4m, and double Rory’s Jester and 4f x 4f.

“Obviously they’re two really good broodmare sires and really good stallions as well,” Munz says.

“Rory’s Jester is where the speed’s coming from. A double-up of Rory’s Jester is not a negative. On the dam’s side, that’s why it’s a fast family, and it’s the thing that gives Super Seth horses that precocity that a number of them have had.”

The double Danehill is double male, the statistically least successful of the three ways of doing it, but Munz is happy with where it sits in the pedigree.

“That double Danehill will work,” Munz says. “You can say it’s sex balanced, because the Danehill in the dam’s side is not the broodmare sire, so that’s not a problem.”

As mentioned here previously, fears of doubling Danehill appear to be on the ebb tide as he in turn recedes deeper into pedigrees.

“There’s certain times where you’re concerned about doubling up,” Munz says.

“The only times you start really worrying about double-ups is, one, when the broodmare sire is doubled up, though there are exceptions, and, two, if the stallion that’s reinforced on both sides, and up close, has a temperament problem.

“There are certain stallions historically - not so much now - who used to be very hot. If you’ve got a hot stallion close-up on both sides of the pedigree you might say, ‘Hang on a sec’.

“But in this pedigree everything works.”

While there’s no other in-breeding to Ruska Roma than Danehill and Rory’s Jester, influential stallions Shirley Heights (Mill Reef) and Sir Ivor (Sir Gaylord) are repeated in the sixth remove.

Shirley Heights is doubled in strong spots at 6m x 6m via Darshaan and Deploy, the damsires of High Chaparral and Dubawi.

Sir Ivor’s at 6m x 6f, 6f through Sir Tristram, sire of Dundeel’s damsire Zabeel, Foreign Courier, dam of Makfi’s damsire Green Desert, and Grand Luxe, second dam of Sansa’s damsire, Flying Spur.

For historically influential broodmares, America’s Lalun (Djeddah) is at 7m, 9m x 9m, 8m, 8m - with the first spot through Sadler’s Wells’s damsire Bold Reason (Hail To Reason), and the other four through Never Bend (Nasrullah).

Natalma (Native Dancer) is the most present broodmare, with 12 appearances from columns six through nine - ten through Northern Dancer (Nearctic) and two via Danehill’s granddam Spring Adieu (Buckpasser). Nearco takes the stallion gong with 19 spots from seven through nine.

Sansa, who died in August, was put to Super Seth once (for Ruska Roma) and his sire Dundeel four times.

When purchased as a broodmare, she was carrying Smile And Wave (I Am Invincible), who won at Flemington and Mornington over 1000 metres in a five-start career for Munz. After Ruska Roma, she bore Gallonetto (Dundeel), who was due for her first start at Geelong on Thursday before being scratched.

‘That was more than my wildest dreams!’

Barnavara tops Tattersalls December Mares Sale at 4.8 million

Racing Post Bloodstock staff

Barnavara (Credit: Alisha Meeder)

Fast-improving filly Barnavara (Calyx) – who delivered Jessica Harrington a breakthrough elite-level win in the Prix de l’Opera (Gr 1, 2400m) – added another extraordinary chapter to her story on Tuesday evening when topping the Tattersalls December Mares Sale at 4,800,000gns (approx. AU$10.18 million).

Consigned by Baroda Stud, Barnavara became the highest-priced filly in training sold anywhere in the world this year. The three-year-old was a three-time stakes winner before her elite-level triumph. An anonymous online bidder secured the filly under the name Sugar Whiskey Trading.

“What a buzz!” Harrington said. “I promise you that was more than my wildest dreams, it really was. It got stuck at 1,500,000 guineas and then it went on and on and on and on. It’s amazing.”

With the buyer choosing to remain unidentified, Barnavara’s future direction remains unclear, but Harrington is convinced her best is still ahead.

“There’s a lot in the tank with her, we thought she was only just growing into herself because she went on improving all year,” she said. “She's an amazing filly, she really is…everything just came together, it was extraordinary from then on.”

Barnavara cost €70,000 when BBA Ireland bought her at the 2023 Goffs Orby Sale. She is the third foal out of Alfea (Kentucky Dynamite) whose pedigree traces back to Group 1 performers Danceteria (Redoute’s Choice) and Lope De Vega (Shamardal).

Coolmore secure four-time Group-1 winner Porta Fortuna

MV Magnier ensured champion filly Porta Fortuna (Caravaggio) would join the Coolmore broodmare band when signing at 4,500,000gns (approx. AU$9.63 million) for the multiple Group 1 winner after a tense bidding duel at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale on Tuesday.

“In fairness to Donnacha [O’Brien, trainer] he’s done an incredible job with her,” Magnier said. “She’s a very good filly, very talented, she’s got loads of quality so let’s hope she can breed something similar. We’ve put a good bit of thought into which stallion she might visit and there’s a good chance that she could go to Starspangledbanner. He’s such an underrated stallion that it’s unbelievable, he’s turned out to be very good.”

Porta Fortuna was offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency. She won eight races across three seasons, including Group 1 triumphs in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m), Falmouth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m), and Matron Stakes (Gr 1, 1m).

Her juvenile season featured victories in the Naas Fillies Sprint (Gr 3, 6f) and Albany Stakes (Gr 2, 6f), while an exceptional three-year-old campaign earned her the title of Cartier Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, making her the first winner of that award ever sold as a horse in training.

“It was great that she sold well,” O’Brien said. “I’m delighted that Coolmore and MV got her. She’s happy and healthy and all her owners got a great price for her.”

Porta Fortuna is out of Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) mare Too Precious, a four-time winner and sister to triple Group 2 victor Numerian.

Arrowfield for to 1.3 million guineas for Too Darn Hot half-sister

Arrowfield Stud landed one of the headline acts at the second Sceptre Session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale on Tuesday, going to 1.3 million guineas (approx. AU$2.82 million) to secure Chere Darmoiselle (Kingman) a half-sister to champion sire Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) out of triple Group 1 winner Dar Re Mi (Singspiel).

Offered by Watership Down Stud, who bred and raced Too Darn Hot, the unraced four-year-old mare was presented in foal to leading French stallion Zarak (Dubawi).

"We will leave her here to foal and bring her home in the autumn which will be spring at home," Arrowfield’s Jon Freyer said.

"She has been bought for The Autumn Sun, who we stand. We are big fans of Too Darn Hot, we are sending him half a dozen mares this year. We love that family and the opportunity to buy a filly out of the family was too good to resist. We were stretched to do it, we were hoping to buy her a fraction less than that, but the ones with those sort of pedigrees you really have to stretch for and I am pleased we did.

“We’re all about getting these mares with these families and we will probably keep all the daughters going forward.”

The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) has enjoyed a standout spring, headlined by unbeaten mare Autumn Glow winning both the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m), while three-year-old colt Autumn Boy claimed the $3 million Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

"He is now the leading sire, and he is going to be an important stallion, and with her line, the Kingman line, we can hopefully breed a stallion for the future," Freyer added.
