Four for Ardrossan

New winners

Ardrossan – Waikato Stud’s Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice) was provided with his fourth individual winner courtesy of a win by Saltcoats (2 g ex Savanite by Savabeel) n the Futurity Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Pukekohe. Ardrossan, who has now had ten starters, will stand for NZ$10,000 (plus GST), up from the NZ$6,000 (plus GST) he stood for in 2022.

Blue Point (pictured above) – Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) chalked up his seventh individual first-crop winner when Politico (2 c ex Servalan by No Nay Never) got off the mark over six furlongs at Chester. Bred by Vimal and Gillian Khosla and raced by Saeed Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the colt was bought for €63,000 from the Ballylinch Stud draft at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2022 and he is out of the Listed winner Servalan (No Nay Never). Blue Point, who has now had 28 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season at Darley’s Kelvinside base in New South Wales for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Brave Smash – Yarraman Park’s Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) sired his ninth individual winner when Kalasec (2 g ex Occitan by Street Cry) got off the mark at the fifth attempt, winning over 1000 metres at Murray Bridge. Kalasec was purchased for $120,000 from the Valiant Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2022 and he is the second winner out of winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Occitan. The stallion, who has now had 23 starters, will cover his first book of mares at Yarraman Park this upcoming breeding season for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

Calyx – Malc (2 c ex Bereka by Firebreak) became the fifth individual winner from ten starters for Coolmore’s former shuttler Calyx (Kingman) when he made a successful debut in a novice contest over five furlongs at Carlisle. A 140,000gns breeze-up buy and 34,000gns yearling, Malc is the sixth foal out of the Firebreak (Charnwood Forest) mare Bereka, who herself is a sister to Italian Group 1 winner Heart’s Of Fire. Calyx stands for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$16,280).

Justify – Returning Coolmore Stud shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy) chalked up his sixth southern hemisphere-bred winner when Clavadatsch (2 f ex Art Collection by Fastnet Rock) impressively broke her maiden on debut over 1300 metres at Cranbourne. Bred and raced by Coolmore, the filly is out of stakes-placed winner Art Collection (Fastnet Rock), a daughter of Group 3 winner Estelle Collection (Stravinsky), making her a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice). Having missed the 2022 season, Justify, who has now had 14 starters in the southern hemisphere, will return to Coolmore Australia later this year and he will stand for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).

Magna Grecia – Former Coolmore Stud shuttler Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) earned his third first-crop winner when Mister Salvo (2 c ex Alumni Award by Oasis Dream) dead-heated with Conte Duval (Dandy Man) in a maiden over 1000 metres in Rome. Mister Salvo was bought by Applewood Stud for €30,000 at the Goffs Ireland November Foal Sale in 2021, before being purchased by Marco Bozzi Bloodstock for £26,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale the following year. The colt is out of unraced Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Alumni Award, a sister to Listed winner Dux Scholar. Magna Grecia, who has now had 12 starters, stood at Coolmore’s Australian base for three seasons, but will not return this year. He is standing at Coolmore’s Irish base for a fee of €15,000 (approx. AU$24,655).

National Defense – Former Widden Stud shuttler National Defense (Invincible Spirit) chalked up his first southern hemisphere-bred individual winner when Peace Treaty (2 f ex Relaunch by Statue Of Liberty) broke his maiden in the two-year-old fillies’ maiden plate over 1100 metres at Ballarat. Purchased by Roll The Dice and Rogers Bloodstock for $50,000 from the Widden Stud draft at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Peace Treaty is one of two winners out of the three-time winner Relaunch (Statue Of Liberty), herself a half-sister to Listed winner Cavaloce (Testa Rossa). National Defense, who has had nine southern hemisphere-bred runners, died at Widden Stud last year.

Santos – Highview Stud’s Santos (I Am Invincible) took his tally of individual winners to four courtesy of victories for Sandual (2 g ex Dualist by Choisir), who won a 1400-metre maiden plate at Horsham, and Victory Win’s (2 g ex Arwen Ace by Don Eduardo) triumph over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast. Sandual was purchased for $40,000 as a yearling. He is the first foal out of the unplaced Dualist (Choisir), herself a half-sister to Group 1 placegetter Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt). Victory Win is one of two winners from five runners out of the unraced mare Arwen Ace (Don Eduardo), herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner She’s A Meanie (Prince Salieri). Santos, who has now had 14 starters, will stand for a fee of NZ$7,500 (plus GST).

Too Darn Hot – Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) got off the mark as a stallion when his daughter Fallen Angel (2 f ex Agnes Stewart by Lawman) broke the ice at the first time of asking in a maiden over seven furlongs at Haydock. Bred by Branton Court Stud, Fallen Angel became the third winner out of Group 2-winning and Group 1-placed mare Agnes Stewart (Lawman), a half-sister to Listed winner Sorrel (Dansili). Too Darn Hot, who has had six starters, is standing at Darley’s Dalham Hall base for a fee of £40,000 (approx. AU$75,815) and he will return to Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley where he will stand his fourth successive season at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Ten Sovereigns – Former shuttler Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never) scored his third first-crop winner when Nemonte (2 f ex Jumellea by Zoffany) broke her maiden on debut over six furlongs at the Curragh. Ten Sovereigns shuttled to the now defunct Valachi Downs for one season in 2020, where he covered 66 mares, producing 44 foals. The stallion, who has had 15 starters, now stands exclusively at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a fee of €17,500 (approx. AU$28,800).

Trapeze Artist – Flying Trapeze (2 c ex Coromandel by Bernardini) became the sixth individual winner from 26 starters for Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) when he scored a narrow success in a 1400-metre maiden handicap at Kembla Grange. Bred by Rob and Jan Bergstrom, Flying Trapeze was purchased for $85,000 from the Widden Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the second foal out of the Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Coromandel, herself a sister to multiple Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Toydini. Trapeze Artist will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST).

New Group / Grade 1 winners

Ocean Park – Waikato Stud resident Ocean Park (Thorn Park) chalked up his fourth individual Group 1 winner when Kovalica (3 g ex Vitesse by Makfi) took out the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm. The gelding was a NZ$110,000 buy for Mulcaster Bloodstock from the Curraghmore draft at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale in 2021. Ocean Park, who has now had 392 starters, will stand the 2023 season for a fee of NZ$30,000 (plus GST). 

Satono Crown – Shadai Stallion Station resident Satono Crown (Marju) earned his first elite-level winner when Tastiera (3 c ex Partitura by Manhattan Cafe) landed the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) (Gr 1, 2400m). Tastiera is the first stakes winner in three generations of his family. Satono Crown, who has now had 112 starters, stands for a fee of ¥1,500,000 (approx. AU$16,360).

Siyouni – Paddington (3 c ex Modern Eagle by Montjeu) secured an impressive triumph in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at the Curragh and in doing so provided Haras de Bonneval-based sire Siyouni (Pivotal) with his ninth individual elite-level winner. Purchased for €420,000 from the Monceaux draft at the Arqana October Yearling Sale in 2021, Paddington is one of two winners out of the Listed-winning mare Modern Eagle (Montjeu), who is a half-sister to stakes winner Mighty Blue (Authorized). Siyouni, who has now had 868 starters, stands for a fee of  €150,000 (approx. AU$246,870). 

So You Think – In winning the Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm, Think About It (4 g ex Tiare by Flying Spur) provided Coolmore Stud-based sire So You Think (High Chaparral) with his tenth individual top-flight winner. Think About It was bought for $70,000 from the Newgate Farm draft at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in 2020. So You Think, who has now had 807 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season for an increased fee of $99,000 (inc GST), having commanded a fee of $93,500 (inc GST) in 2022.

New stakes winners

Bungle Inthejungle – ​​Rathasker Stud resident Bungle Inthejungle (Exceed And Excel) chalked up his ninth individual stakes winner courtesy of a win by Givemethebeatboys (2 c ex Dromana by Dutch Art) win in the Marble Hill Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh. Givemethebeatboys was bought by Highpoint Bloodstock for €15,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale in 2021, before being purchased by Con Marnane for €11,000 at the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale the following year. Bungle Inthejungle, who has now had 245 starters, is standing for a fee of €6,500 (approx. AU$10,695). 

Capitalist – Newgate Farm resident Capitalist (Written Tycoon) sired his 13th individual stakes winner when Comrade Rosa (4 m ex No Looking Back by Redoute’s Choice) landed the Helen Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. Comrade Rosa was purchased by Peachester Lodge from the Kitchwin Hills draft for $100,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2020. She is out of No Looking Back, a stakes-winning daughter of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill). Capitalist, who has now had 297 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST), down on the $99,000 (inc GST) he stood for in 2022.

Deep Impact – The regally bred Drumroll (3 c ex Maybe by Galileo) became the 197th individual stakes winner for the late Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) when he was awarded the Gallinule Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at the Curragh on Sunday. Drumroll is a brother to English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner and Coolmore stallion Saxon Warrior, being the fifth foal out of the Group 1 winner Maybe (Galileo). Deep Impact has now had 1,714 starters.

Dubawi – Al Husn (4 f ex Hadaatha by Sea The Stars) became the 256th individual stakes winner for Darley’s flagship stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) when she scored in the Rothesay Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Ayr. The fourth foal out of the Listed-winning and Group 1-placed Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Hadaatha, Al Husn is a half-sister to dual winner Moshaawer (Frankel). Dubawi, who has now had 1,579 starters, stands at Dalham Hall Stud for a record fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$662,300).

Free Eagle – Former Cornerstone Stud shuttler Free Eagle (High Chaparral) scored his fourth individual stakes winner courtesy of Bolthole’s (4 c ex Weekend Getaway by Acclamation) win in the Grand Prix de Bordeaux (Listed, 1900m) at Bordeaux Le Bouscat. Bolthole was bought for €12,000 at the Goffs Ireland February Sale and was then reoffered at the 2022 edition of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale where he was purchased for 130,000gns. The four-year-old is out of three-time winner Weekend Getaway (Acclamation), herself a sister to Group 3 scorer Absolutely So. Free Eagle, who has now had 255 starters, shuttled to Australia for three seasons, but did not return in 2019. He stands at the Irish National Stud for a fee of €5,000 (approx. AU$8,230).

Gallant Son – The Cesar DeAlba-trained Fast Buck (5 g ex Zorra Roja by Falstaff) scored at Graded level for the first time when landing the Daytona Stakes (Gr 3, 6.5f) at Santa Anita and in the process became Gallant Son’s (Malabar Gold) first stakes winner. Fast Buck is out of the dual winner Zorra Roja (Falstaff), making him a half-brother to three-time Listed scorer Fast And Foxy (Thisnearlywasmine). Gallant Son has now had 29 starters.

Galileo – Coolmore Stud’s late Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) sired his 364th individual stakes winner when First Minister (3 c ex Naples Bay by Giant’s Causeway) landed the Prix Hocquart (Gr 3, 1900m) at Longchamp. First Minister is out of dual US Grade 3 winner Naples Bay (Giant’s Causeway), a half-sister to three-time Grade 1 winner and former Darley shuttler Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado). Galileo, who has now had 2,463 starters, died in 2021 at the age of 23.

Gleneagles – Araminta (3 f ex Mince by Medicean) took out the Height Of Fashion Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Goodwood and in the process provided Coolmore resident Gleneagles (Galileo) with his 27th individual stakes winner. Purchased by Blandford Bloodstock for 82,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2021, Araminta became the second winner out of Group 3 scorer Mince (Medicean), the daughter of Listed winner Strut (Danehill Dancer). Gleneagles, who has now had 350 starters, stands for a fee of €17,500 (approx. AU$28,765).

Golden Horn – Gregory (3 c ex Gretchen by Galileo) made it two wins from as many starts when he landed the Cocked Hat Stakes (Listed, 1m 3f) at Goodwood, providing Overbury Stud resident Golden Horn (Cape Cross) with his 15th individual stakes winner. Bred and raced by Normandie Stud, Gregory is out of Group 2 winner Gretchen (Galileo). The colt’s second dam is Listed winner Dolores (Danehill) and she produced seven winners including Duncan (Dalakhani), who dead-heated with Jukebox Jury (Montjeu) in the 2011 edition of the Irish St. Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f). Golden Horn, who has now had 271 starters, stands for a fee of £8,000 (approx. AU$15,160).

Havana Grey – Whitsbury Manor Stud-based sire Havana Grey (Havana Gold) earned his ninth individual stakes winner courtesy of a victory from Elite Status (2 c ex Dotted Swiss by Swiss Spirit) in the National Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown. Elite Status was purchased for 56,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2021, before being bought for 325,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year. Havana Grey, who has now had 125 starters, is standing for a fee of £18,500 (approx. AU$35,030).

King Kamehameha – In winning the Meguro Kinen (Gr 2, 2500m) at Tokyo, Heat On Beat (6 h ex Marcellina by Deep Impact) provided his sire King Kamehameha (Kingmambo) with his 98th individual stakes winner. Heat On Beat is one of four winners out of Grade 1 winner Marcellina (Deep Impact), herself a daughter of French Group 1 winner Marbye (Marju). King Kamehameha, who has now had 1.696 starters, died in 2019.

Kingman – Juddmonte Farm-based sire Kingman (Invincible Spirit) secured his 60th individual stakes winner when Mashhoor (5 g ex Sunsemperchi by Montjeu) took out the Orby Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at the Curragh. Mashhoor was bought for 85,000gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, before being snapped up at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year. The gelding was then offered at the 2021 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale, where he was bought by his current trainer for 40,000gns. Well-related filly Queen Picasso (3 f ex Aris by Danroad) landed the Soaring Softly Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Belmont to provide Kingman with his 61st individual stakes winner. Bred by Dermot Farrington and Queensland-based operation Canning Downs, Queen Picasso was bought by Crow Euro Venture II for 200,000gns at Book 1 of the 2021 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The filly is one of five winners out of the Listed-placed mare Aris (Danroad), whose progeny is headed by Group 1 winner and Aquis Farm shuttler Aclaim (Acclamation). Kingman, who has now had 542 starters, stands for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$236,725).

Lawman – Immensitude (3 f ex Ma Petite Poule by Elusive City) landed the Prix Finlande (Listed, 1800m) at Longchamp and in doing so handed Karwin Stud-based sire Lawman (Invincible Spirit) with his 37th individual stakes winner. Immensitude, who was bought for €80,000 at the Arqana October Yearling Sale in 2021, is out of three-time winner Ma Petite Poule (Elusive City) and she is herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Remus De La Tour (Stormy River) and stakes winner Chill (Verglas). Lawman, who has now had 846 starters, is standing for a fee of €6,000 (approx. AU$9,860).

Lope De Vega – Former shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal) earned his 109th individual stakes winner when King Of Conquest (4 g ex Moi Meme by Teofilo) landed the Festival Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Goodwood. King Of Conquest was bought by his owners Godolphin for 900,00gns from the Hillwood Stud draft at Book 1 of the Tattersalls’ October Yearling Sale in 2020. The gelding is out of French Listed winner Moi Meme (Teofilo), who is also the dam of Listed winner King Vega (Lope De Vega), as well as stakes-placed filly Capital Structure (Lope De Vega). Lope De Vega shuttled to the now defunct Patinack Farm for four seasons, but did not return in 2015. The stallion, who has now had 1,139 starters, stands at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland for a fee of €125,000 (approx. AU$205,725).

Noozhoh Canarias – Spanish-based stallion Noozhoh Canarias (Caradak) chalked up his first stakes winner when All Iron (3 c ex Sweet Sue by Nathaniel) landed the Derby Du Midi (Listed, 1900m) at Bordeaux Le Bouscat. All Iron is out of the winning Nathaniel (Galileo) mare Sweet Sue and hails from the same family as dual Group 1 winner Melodist (The Minstrel). Noozhoh Canarias has now had 22 starters,

Sea The Moon – Kassada (3 f ex Kasalla by Soldier Hollow) landed the Diana Trial (Gr 3, 2000m) at Berlin-Hoppegarten and in the process became the 28th individual stakes winner for her sire Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars). Owned and bred by Gestut Rottgen, Kassada is out of the Group 1-placed winning mare Kasalla (Soldier Hollow). Sea The Moon, who has now had 349 starters, stands at Lanwades Stud for a fee of £25,000 (approx. AU$47,350).

Showcasing – Former Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis Dream) chalked up his 64th individual stakes winner when Get Ahead (4 f ex Suelita by Dutch Art) took out the Cecil Frail Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Haydock.Get Ahead is out of winning mare Suelita (Dutch Art), who is also the dam of this year’s English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Chaldean (Frankel), Group 2 winner Alkumait (Showcasing) and Listed winner The Broghie Man (Cityscape). The four-year-old was bought for by Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock for 200,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2020. Showcasing, who has now had 1,175 starters, shuttled to New Zealand for seven seasons but did not return in 2018. He now stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud for a fee of £45,000 (approx. AU$85,280).

Trade Fair – Late stallion Trade Fair (Zafonic) sired his 19th individual stakes winner when Startrade (6 g ex Startego by Star Pak) landed the Hyperion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ascot. Startrade is one of five winners and first stakes scorer out of nine-time winner Startego (Star Pak). Trade Fair, who has now had 543 starters, died in 2018.
