Red Resistance

TRAINER: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott

RACE: UNSW Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

Gai Waterhouse will be hoping that her unbeaten colt Red Resistance (Russian Revolution) can become another horse to win both the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) when he tackles the first part of that feature-race double at Randwick today.

The Hall of Fame trainer scored in both races with Pierro (Lonhro) in 2012 and Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro) in 2015, before Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) became her third winner in 2020, with the latter success coming in partnership with Adrian Bott.

Having made a promising winning debut in an 1100-metre contest at Rosehill on January 14, the son of Russian Revolution (Snitzel) then extended his unbeaten record to two when landing the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) over the same course and distance just a fortnight later.

Today’s event will see Red Resistance take on just four rivals, last-start Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) and Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) scorer Empire Of Japan (Snitzel), alongside fellow unbeaten pair Cafe Millenium (Not A Single Doubt) and Militarize (Dundeel).

“It’s a really important race for him on Saturday,’’ Bott told Racing NSW.  “It’s a great indicator of your chances in the Slipper and a race with a bit of depth. He’s doing everything right.

“He’s got the class and the speed, he’s got a lot of those great two-year-old attributes that sees him be very effective.

“He’s there to run a big race and we want to see him win again and put himself right in contention.”

A homebred for Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock operation, Red Resistance is out of the Group 2-winning and Group 1-placed mare Heatherly (Lonhro), who ran second to Russian Revolution in the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) in 2017.

Red Resistance is the third foal out of the mare, who was a $1.6 million buy for Go Bloodstock in conjunction with Paul Moroney at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

She has a colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and a colt foal by Capitalist (Written Tycoon), and has also been covered by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). Russian Revolution stands for a fee of $71,500 (inc GST).
