Tempted bidding to extend Godolphin’s excellent record in Run To The Rose

Mega trainer Ciaron Maher has a quartet of nominations for Saturday’s Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m), as four more quality runners embark on spring campaigns amid an extremely classy crop of three-year-olds.

It’s unlikely all four will start in the Rosehill set weights and penalties feature, but two who look likely to clash in it are Maher’s former Godolphin star filly Tempted (Street Boss), and ATC Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) runner-up State Visit (Wootton Bassett), both of whom are resuming.

Maher believes the outside chance of his quartet, Navy Pilot (I Am Invincible), could surprise a few people this spring, after a Brisbane winter campaign hampered by immaturity. The colt had four starts in the north for a win in an Eagle Farm two-year-old handicap, two placings - including one in Listed class - and a seventh in the JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m).

Maher’s fourth Run To The Rose nominee is another Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt in West Of Swindon, but the trainer said he may be steered instead to the slightly longer distance - and the more friendly handicap scale - of the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1300m).

Tempted is the only filly among 20 nominees for what shapes as a compelling Run To The Rose.

What's On

The main lead-up to the stallion-making Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) features 18 colts, but the $3.50 favourite on Tuesday was the lone gelding among the nominations. Peter Snowden’s Raging Force (Cosmic Force) is seeking his fifth straight win since his ultimate gear change.

Another son of Wootton Bassett, the Chris Waller-Coolmore colt Wodeton, was at $4 after his first-up second in Raging Force’s San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou’s recent first-up winner Skyhook (Written Tycoon) was at $5, with Tempted at $6 alongside ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Nepotism (Brutal).

It’s hard to imagine Maher - who has more than 550 horses on his books, trains out of seven bases, and was comfortably Australia’s most successful trainer last season with 329.5 wins to Waller’s 273 - having a hard act to follow.

But Tempted’s former conditioner James Cummings, when Godolphin’s private trainer, won the past four editions of the Run To The Rose, and five of the last six. Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) won it in 2019, then the four straight from 2021 comprised Anamoe (Street Boss), In Secret (I Am Invincible), Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) and Traffic Warden (Street Boss).

Maher drew one of the prime lots in Godolphin’s switch to public trainers when given Tempted, and while she’ll be a rose amongst thorns this Saturday, he’s confident she can acquit herself well as she opens a campaign which could aim towards Flemington’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) or the Golden Rose.

Tempted was a star two-year-old through six starts last season, and while all three of her wins came against her own sex, she also showed she could mix it with the boys.

She was a meritorious seventh in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), finishing strongly after being blocked for much of the straight, and later ran a superb 0.65-length third in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), powering up the inside from tenth at the 400m as a $4.80 favourite.

Showing her durability, she came out three weeks later and won Randwick’s Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), beating two fillies who’ve shown their class before and after that race in Savvy Hallie (Hellbent) and Within The Law (Lucky Vega).

Tempted was also nominated for Flemington’s fillies’ event, the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) this Saturday, but Maher told ANZ News his new acquisition would “most likely” race against the boys at Rosehill.

In Secret is the only filly to win the Run To The Rose in its 22 editions. And the only female to win the Golden Rose since 2001 has been the outstanding triple Group 1 winner Forensics (Flying Spur), who won the event when it was still only a Group 2 in 2008.

But Maher has no qualms about taking on the males with Tempted.

“She’s come to me in good order, and she seems to have come up very well. Obviously she’s a very good horse,” said Maher, who took note of the filly as a two-year-old.

“I noticed her in all her runs. She was enormous in the Slipper, and in the Sykes she covered ground and blew them away.

“Mentally she’s very good. In all her trials, she travels and improves up under her own steam. She seems quite experienced for a young horse and that certainly comes through.

“She’s done it against the boys before, so there’s not worries in that department.”

Raging Force (Credit: Sportpix)

Tempted comes in with one barrier trial, a second over 1050 metres at Randwick under James McDonald on a soft 7 on September 2. With McDonald in Melbourne to partner Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), Tempted will be ridden by Ethan Brown in the Run To The Rose.

Rosehill was a soft 5 on Tuesday. Cool weather and the chance of showers were forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, but with fine and sunny weather predicted for the rest of the week, the track may yet improve into the good range.

“The track was fairly damp for her barrier trial and she went OK - James gave her a good report - but on top of the ground she’s fine as well,” Maher said.

“She looks like she’s furnished this time in for sure. She spends more of her time at our place up at Bong Bong, and she seems to enjoy that. She’s a happy horse in a good spot. I think she used to spend a fair bit of time at the farm when she was with Godolphin, so she likes the rural environment.

“We’ll be guided by her first-up run. She could go to Melbourne and target the Coolmore, or stay in Sydney for the Golden Rose.

“She’s pretty sharp. She certainly trialled that way the other day.”

Fillies have fared better in the Coolmore, with three winners in the past seven runnings, also including In Secret.

Coolmore homebred State Visit has also been nominated for Flemington’s Poseidon Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) but Maher said he was “most likely” headed for a clash with Tempted - and a few others - in the Run To The Rose.

He’ll resume after shining as a two-year-old, his four runs highlighted by a 0.21-length second in the Sires’, and a last-start fourth in the Champagne.

The colt has had two recent barrier trials and will be ridden by Chad Schofield.

“I think he should go right on with it this campaign,” Maher said. “There’s a good group of three-year-olds in Sydney. He was right up there with them as a two-year-old, and I can’t see why he wouldn’t be right up there as a three-year-old.”

Having performed well over 1400 metres and 1600 metres in juvenile Group 1s, State Visit may seem a likely candidate for the Golden Rose or the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). But Maher said he might still head towards the Coolmore.

“I put blinkers on him for his trial the other day to see how he was and he was a little bit sharper in them,” Maher said.

“He’s very good over 1400 metres, and you probably need a horse who runs at least 1200 metres or a little bit further for the Coolmore.”

Navy Pilot, likely Caulfield Guineas bound, has had a somewhat chequered start to life. A younger full brother to triple stakes winner - and $2.8 million broodmare - Tiz Invincible, he was passed in at Magic Millions Gold Coast $80,000 short of a $750,000 reserve.

Breeders Phoenix Thoroughbreds (II) thus race him with Maher. He showed promise as a two-year-old without starring, but his trainer feels he could be finally ready to bloom.

“When he travelled to Brisbane, he had to grow up a little bit,” Maher said. “He overdid it a couple of times and beat himself.

“But he’s come up well this time in. He’s definitely matured mentally and I think that should transfer through to his form.

“I reckon he’ll have his first run in Sydney and then go to Melbourne, and he probably gets to a Guineas.”

West Of Swindon, bred by his senior owners Qatar Bloodstock, had three starts at two for Team Hawkes for one black-type placing, a second in Rosehill’s Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m). He also ran second in the Golden Gift (1100m), one of NSW’s rogue 18 races whose supposed black type upgrades have been rejected by the Asian Pattern Committee - a state of affairs frustrating not only to breeders but journalists on a word limit.

After failing in the Golden Slipper, West Of Swindon was transferred to Maher.

He’s the only one of this Maher quartet with a run under his belt - but it wasn’t a good one.

West Of Swindon (Credit: Sportpix)

The colt was sent to Kembla Grange for an intended soft kill in a 1200 metres colts, geldings and entires’ maiden on August 30 but, as a $2.60 favourite, travelled wide and managed only a 1.7-length fourth.

With the Golden Rose or the Caulfield Guineas his likely grand final, Maher’s backing him to rebound, though his Saturday second-up run looks likely to come not in the set weights and penalties Run To The Rose, but the Ming Dynasty quality handicap.

In the former, he’s on the minimum of 55kg beneath a topweight of 58.5kg, shared by Nepotism and Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Devil Night (Extreme Choice). In the latter, he has 54.5kg, half a kilo above the minimum and six kilos below topweight.

“The weight scale might suit him a bit better in the Ming Dynasty,” Maher said.

“Nothing really went to plan at Kembla. He was wide and did a fair bit of work. He’ll definitely come on from that.

“He’s a lovely, well put-together colt who’s got good ability. He’s got a run under his belt, and hopefully he can get back to form on the weekend.”

Griffiths places faith in unbeaten Legacy Bound in ‘hot’ edition of the Poseidon

Legacy Bound (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) has made a strong start in 2025-26 as he looks to kick on from his first season sires’ title, and his top ranked offspring will try to boost the stallion’s stocks further when he resumes for the spring on Saturday.

Legacy Bound, the homebred for Ole Kirk’s farm Vinery Stud who’s won two from two, will return in a high class edition of the Poseidon Stakes (Listed, 1100m) up the Flemington straight.

The Robbie Griffiths-trained gelding meets a hot field of three-year-old males. Most have recent racing on their side, including Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Devil Night (Extreme Choice), and Tycoon Star (Written Tycoon), McGaw (I Am Immortal) and Jimmy Recard (I Am Invincible), who filled the trifecta in the recent McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Chris Waller’s Godolphin colt Beiwacht (Bivouac), Team Hayes’s five-time winner Shining Smile (Spirit Of Boom), Ciaron Maher’s West Of Swindon (Wootton Bassett) and Team Corstens’ Facilitate (Capitalist) are also just some more of the 15 quality nominations.

And so the well-bred Legacy Bound will face by far his sternest test to date, but those who’ve been on and around him have high hopes for a bounteous spring, intended to reach its crescendo in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

The fourth foal of another Vinery homebred in Sanaya, who’s by the farm’s former shuttler turned gun broodmare sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo), Legacy Bound was entered for last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale but was withdrawn when complications arose.

At the same sale Griffiths, along with Peter Ford Thoroughbreds and Brookdale Racing, paid $1 million for a grey Ole Kirk filly from Newhaven Park’s draft, out of the multiple stakes-placed Supara (Domesday). Seeing Griffiths’ faith in their debutant sire, Vinery sent him Legacy Bound.

The colt won his first jump-out, became a gelding, then after winning one of two more jump-outs in March debuted with a slashing 3.75-length victory in a 1200-metre Ballarat two-year-old maiden under Jye McNeil at $8.50.

Sent straight to black type in Morphettville’s Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in late April, and with a new jockey in Mark Zahra, Legacy Bound started a $1.85 favourite against nine rivals, settled just off the pace, barged his way to the lead by the 800-metre mark and bolted clear to win by 2.8 lengths.

He beat into second place Yulong’s Steel Trap (King’s Legacy), who’d win a Group 3 at the same course at his next start.

And as Legacy Bound went for a spell, Zahra’s post-race words were ringing in Griffiths’ ears.

“From his first gallop he was always shaping up the right way,” Griffiths told ANZ News. “But we couldn't get a good guide to him on his jump-outs, because the ground was chopping up, and he’s such a big strider.

“And the longer you train, the more reserved you are about a horse until you see him on raceday. But when we did see him on raceday, he was a better horse than he even was in training, so that was good.

“I always thought he’d give us a better performance on good ground, and he did that at Ballarat, he blew them away. And it was the same in Adelaide. He sat just behind the speed for the first little bit, then took control of the race early and then just blew them away.

“Mark hopped off and put a very big wrap on him. He compared him to Growing Empire. For a guy like Mark to say that - that was probably the most impressive part of the win to me, the jockey’s post-race comments.

“He was keen to ride him, and stick with him all the way through, so that was very encouraging.”

The thrice Group 1-placed Growing Empire - now serving his first book at Yulong for $22,000 (inc GST) - was ridden by Zahra to SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) success in 2024, and in two of his other three black-type victories: the McNeil and the Poseidon.

Griffiths is now hoping Legacy Bound can frank Zahra’s comparison to Growing Empire by also winning the Poseidon in his first attempt at the Flemington straight.

“I think he’ll suit the straight once he gets some practice,” Griffiths said, “but all horses, whether they adapt to it or not, are vulnerable at the first attempt, so you’ve got to be a bit cautious there.

“You’d think running in a straight line would be easier, but they tend to always be looking for that home turn to change legs and sprint up, and it just doesn’t come.

Ole Kirk (Credit: Vinery Stud)

“So I’ve found most horses running down the straight for the first time can be a bit iffy, and then next time they’re OK.

“I’m hoping he adapts, because I think it’s a place that will really suit him well because he’s a big striding animal. But going in there on Saturday, you’ll be a little uncertain.”

First-look reservations aside, and hoping for dry tracks, Griffiths has the sense Legacy Bound could prove a star as he embarks on a three-pronged Flemington straight mission in the Poseidon, the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) on October 4, and the Coolmore on Derby Day.

“I’ve got a good gut feeling about him - we’ve just got to see it now. This campaign is going to be important to see where he ranks,” said Griffiths, not underestimating the Poseidon opposition.

“Like all races at this time of year, there are no easy ones. It looks a pretty hot field, and a few are going to have a bit of a fitness edge, so let’s see where everyone ranks.”

By black type achievement, Legacy Bound is the first mentioned among Ole Kirk’s four stakes-winners.

King Kirk also showed his potential by winning a Group 3, at his first start in Randwick’s Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) but drowned in a swimming pool accident before he could race again.

O’ Ole is by far Ole Kirk’s highest earner, thanks to her victory in the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast, and Wyong’s $200,000 lead-up. Those wins assured Ole Kirk of the first season sires’ title, although due to their restricted nature, the filly ranks below Legacy Bound among Ole Kirk’s offspring in official records.

Also topping the first season chart by stakes winners with four - one more than Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) - the eight-year-old Ole Kirk is off to a strong start in his second season. His five winners put him second by that measure to Farnan, while he ranks third by earnings.

Ole Kirk’s early success earned him a fee bump for the current spring - from the $55,000 (inc GST) of his first four serving seasons, to $99,000 (inc GST).

Such events are all in keeping with Griffiths’ expectations for how the winner of the 2020 Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) - Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) double would fare at stud, hence the early support which has brought three Ole Kirks to his stable.

With Vinery’s new top dog being out of a sister to Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) in Naturale, and with those mares being from the uber-successful family of Scandinavia (Snippets), Griffiths felt the young stallion was credentialed to succeed at stud.

“Ole Kirk has the pedigree and the performance to be good,” Griffiths said. “There were three stallions in that family already - Magnus, who we’ve had a lot of success with, All Too Hard, and a young stallion at stud in Hanseatic.

“So we were backing him based on that genetic background.

“Plus, being by Written Tycoon, a champion stallion himself, out of a sister to Black Caviar, there’s so much depth there.

“And Ole Kirk won the right races, like the Caulfield Guineas. He was good at two and better at three and went off to stud.

“Horses with those credentials should make it, and it looks as though he’s going to, and that’s why we bought into him in his first season.

“I think his stock will be harder to buy next year. I’d be keen to buy more and I reckon a lot of people will be thinking the same. So I reckon the market will be pretty strong on him.”

Though Sanaya’s racing highlight among 15 starts was a Kembla Grange maiden win, she fused a quality female family with Ole Kirk.

Legacy Bound’s second dam Astrodame (Flying Spur) won Moonee Valley’s Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) alongside six Group placings. And the gelding’s fourth dam was the outstanding Midnight Fever (Luskin Star), winner of the 1987 Blue Diamond, three Group 2s, two Group 3s and a Listed.

Griffiths was delighted Legacy Bound became the first horse he trained for Vinery.

And the million-dollar filly who inspired that delivery is looking like another smart representative of Ole Kirk. Superior Dame has had four jump-outs and won them all, and is currently spelling ahead of an expected autumn debut.

“She’s been a bit slower to grow so we’ve been patient with her, but she has looked quite impressive,” Griffiths said.

Four internationals remain in Caulfield Cup field

Absurde (Credit: Alan Crowhurst)

The Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at The Valley will have no overseas runners in 2025, but there could be as many as four international contenders in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).

Following the release of first declarations for both races on Tuesday, the number of Caulfield Cup hopefuls fell from the original 142 entries taken last month to 85 while the first declarations for the Cox Plate saw a reduction to 57 hopefuls from the original 107 entries.

The remaining international Caulfield Cup contenders are Alessandro Botti’s stayer Presage Nocturne (Wootton Bassett), Simon and Ed Crisford’s gelding Meydaan (Frankel), the Japanese stayer Golden Snap (Gold Ship) and possibly the Willie Mullins-trained Absurde (Fastnet Rock).

Absurde, who has contested the past two Melbourne Cups (Gr 1, 3200m), is also nominated to run this Sunday in the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 2800m) at The Curragh.

If he was to run there, he won’t be able to contest the Caulfield Cup as those horses have to be in quarantine this weekend to be ready for the first shipment to Melbourne on AFL Grand Final day.

The dream clash of Yulong’s star mares Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) could still occur in the $6 million Cox Plate on October 25 with both mares paid-up for.

It appeared the clash could be off after Treasurethe Moment suffered a colic attack earlier in the week, but his trainer Matt Laurie has since said the Cox Plate was still on the champion mare’s agenda.

Via Sistina’s trainer Chris Waller certainly has a major presence in the Cox Plate – a race he has won five times - with Sydney’s champion trainer having 21 of the 57 remaining hopefuls.

He has 22 of the 85 horses left in the Caulfield Cup and last week entered a whopping 27 horses for the $10 million Melbourne Cup on November 4.

Via Sistina confirmed for Makybe Diva

Reigning Horse of the Year Via Sistina has had a change to her spring campaign and will contest the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. The mare was meant to trial on Tuesday morning ahead next week's 7 Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, but the Makybe Diva was put back on the radar after it was confirmed that fellow Yulong-owned mare Treasurethe Moment would miss the race after suffering from a mild bout of colic on Monday morning. Waller confirmed plans for Via Sistina an hour before she was scheduled to trial at Rosehill. "Via Sistina will not trial this morning and will instead race in the Makybe Diva Stakes this Saturday at Flemington," Waller said. "She galloped well this morning and I am happy with her fitness levels. James McDonald will take the ride and Damian Lane will ride Aeliana." Via Sistina and Aeliana (Castelvecchio) were among 12 entries for the Makybe Diva Stakes. Mr Brightside (Bullbars), Antino (Redwood), Another Wil (Street Boss) and Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) are among their potential rivals.

Maher pair chasing Cup ticket

The Ciaron Maher stable will be represented by Sayedaty Sadaty (Anodin) and Jennivamoose (Vadamos) in The Archer (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on Saturday in hopes of securing a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on November 7. Maher has been waiting for the right time to race Sayedaty Sadaty over the 2500-metre trip and, following back-to-back Caulfield and Flemington victories, the gelding finished a last-start third over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley on August 9. "I reckon he should be pretty spot on for it," Maher said. "I wanted to give him the break going into it. He was good at The Valley the other day, but they went a bit quick and Relentless Voyager came from behind him which showed they went a bit quick. He's been crying out for the 2500 metres, but I've just waited for this race." Jennivamoose will be at peak fitness and enters The Archer off back-to-back wins over 2500 metres at Moonee Valley at her past two starts. "Her two runs have been obviously very good and she seems very genuine and building through the line," Maher said. "I don't think the track will matter, but it is a bit of a step-up for her, but she is a horse full of confidence, and she will be on the minimum."

Treasurethe Moment to contest Feehan

Treasurethe Moment is back at trainer Matt Laurie's stable after being hospitalised following a mild case of colic. With this weekend’s Makybe Diva Stakes off the table, the provisional plan is for the mare to head to the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley on September 26. Sam Fairgray, Yulong’s COO, reported the mare has eaten up and was bright on Tuesday morning but said the next few days would be crucial to ensure Treasurethe Moment is back on her feed before Laurie can step up the work. "She'll have an easy few days and then Matt will start to step her back up again," Fairgray told SEN. "After the Feehan, then we'll decide if she goes to the Might And Power with the Cox Plate still on the plan. Obviously, we'll let her tell us and if for any reason she's not ready for those races we'll give her more time as there's plenty of options. It was only a light bout of colic. The signs are all very positive and it would be good to see her in the Cox Plate and match up with all the best ones."

Cup hopefuls to split paths

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s pair Vauban (Galiway) and Sir Delius (Frankel) will take different Group 1 paths en route to the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Waterhouse confirmed on Sunday that the Cox Plate would be more suited for Sir Delius after he was narrowly defeated in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick last start, his first start for the preparation and second in Australia. "Sir Delius will come to Melbourne over the next few days and go to the Naturalism [at Caulfield on September 20] for his next start," Waterhouse confirmed. "He will go to the Cox Plate so we can keep them apart and also it would possibly suit Sir Delius better. They are such exciting horses, it's lovely being associated with horses of that quality." Waterhouse said the stable was pleased with Vauban after he powered home to finish close-up behind Sir Delius in the Chelmsford. "Vauban, everyone talks about Sir Delius - and for good reason - but hardly anyone seems to be talking about Vauban and he was literally on his hammer," Waterhouse said. "He will stay in Sydney and go to the Kingston Town Stakes [at Randwick on September 20] and then come to Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup. We're so pleased with how he is coming along."

Manikato for Alabama Lass

Following her runner-up effort in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) last Saturday, Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) will press on to the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley on September 26. The four-year-old mare had won her only other Australian start and trainers Ken and Bev Kelso were pleased to see her measure up to the highest level on the weekend. “I was very pleased,” Ken Kelso said. “She probably didn’t get all the favours. She was quite fresh and over-raced a bit and then got that bump on the corner, which probably cost her a little bit, but it was a fantastic run. It proved that she can measure up to Aussie sprinters, they are renowned for them, so to measure up to their sprinters at Group 1 level was a big achievement for the horse, and a Group 1 second place is huge for her pedigree. I am very rapt.” Alabama Lass has won six of her ten starts, while her performance last weekend was her third runner-up effort at Group 1 level, having finished second in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) in her native New Zealand. “She is such a trier, she has never finished back further than second in her 10 starts at the highest level, so you can only be pleased with that, and she can only keep improving,” Kelso said.“On that run [Moir], we have got to stay for the Manikato,” he said. “Craig Williams is booked to ride her again, so all systems are go to head there.”

Kennedy faces spell on the sidelines

Leading apprentice Jaylah Kennedy will miss at least the next three months after having surgery on a recurring knee injury. The 24-year-old had an operation on her right knee on Monday afternoon at the Epworth Hospital. Only hours after the surgery Kennedy said she was already counting down to her comeback to the sport. “I’m gutted to be missing the best time of year in the spring but looking forward to returning in the summer,” she wrote on social media. Kennedy has ridden 129 career winners, including a victory at Listed level.

MRC committee returned unopposed

Melbourne Racing Club is set to formally ratify the unopposed re-election of three committee members, including chairman John Kanga. Kanga, Alison Saville and Frank Pollio were all up for re-election but in the absence of any further nominations the positions were retained without a ballot. Kanga said the reappointed candidates and two new members reflected the strength of the MRC leadership.“I congratulate my colleagues Alison Saville and Frank Pollio on joining me in re-election to the Executive Committee,” Kanga said. “Their experience and deep commitment to the club have been instrumental in driving our recent successes, and I look forward to building on that momentum together. At the same time, I warmly welcome new MAG members David Gambell and Sally Jarvis alongside the re-appointment of Stephen Foster and Stephen Conley. Their combined skills, insights and passion for racing will help strengthen our engagement with members and the community, particularly in Mornington.” Nominations will be formally ratified at the Club’s Annual General Meeting on September 25.

Industry mourns Jim Rodger

Dr. James Alexander Rodger, a pioneering figure in Australian equine veterinary medicine, accomplished artist, published author, and visionary community leader, died on Monday. He was 81.

His death marks the end of a distinguished career that fundamentally transformed diagnostic approaches in equine reproductive medicine while leaving an indelible mark on the Upper Hunter Valley through his artistic talents, literary contributions, and community leadership.

Dr. Rodger graduated from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, 1968, before immigrating to Australia in 1976-77. He joined the prominent Morgan Howey and Frasier Equine Veterinary Practice, Scone, working closely with the pioneering veterinarians Dr. John Morgan and Dr. Bill Howey, alongside fellow veterinarians Al Simpson, Nigel Scott, Jamie Barnes, and Hugh White.

This association with Dr. Morgan and Dr. Howey, both respected figures in Australian equine medicine, proved instrumental in shaping his approach to veterinary practice and his understanding of the Australian thoroughbred industry.

Dr. Rodger's commitment to professional excellence was reflected in his qualifications: BVMS, MRCVS, MACVSc (Master in Equine Medicine), and FANZCVS (Fellowship in Equine Reproduction). His expertise encompassed stallion fertility, artificial breeding, clinical research, and equine sports medicine, with experience gained in multiple equine centers worldwide.

His dedication to advancing equine veterinary knowledge extended beyond clinical practice into veterinary literature. In 1997, he co-authored and published "Practical Horse Breeding," a significant contribution to the field that shared practical insights and evidence-based approaches to equine reproduction with veterinarians and breeders worldwide.

He worked at Scone Equine Hospital before establishing Jerry's Plains Veterinary Hospital near Scone in 1990, which grew to become widely recognized throughout Australia and internationally as a specialist equine reproduction clinic.

The clinic became renowned for its comprehensive laboratory supporting haematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, and andrology, primarily servicing thoroughbred studs while also supporting the growing non-thoroughbred industry.

Dr. Rodger's legacy lives on through the Jerry's Plains Veterinary Hospital he founded, the annual Horse Week festival he helped create, his published works, his artistic contributions, and the countless professionals and community members he mentored throughout his distinguished 48-year career in Australian equine veterinary medicine.

Vale Ryan Smith

Kulani Park is mourning the passing of partner and family member Ryan Smith. The brother of farm proprietor Rhys Smith, he was a pivotal part of the successful breeding and pinhooking operation which has consigned horses such as champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter Coleman (Pierata) and dual Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Black Piranha (Clang). Smith also enjoyed success as part-owner of The Verminator (Jeune), a $17,000 weanling purchase who won the 2011 Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) and contested that year’s Melbourne Cup. “Ryan was the best and an absolute legend. Never to be forgotten he will always be loved,” Rhys Smith said.

Wolfgang en route to Melbourne

Talented stayer Wolfgang (Puccini) is booked to fly to Australia on Wednesday and will begin his path towards the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The Group 1 winner was set to start his spring campaign at Wanganui ten days ago, but inclement weather spoiled those plans, with trainers Peter and Shaun McKay electing to head over to Melbourne instead. “He is booked to get on a flight tomorrow [Wednesday] to go to Melbourne and will start on Saturday at Flemington in a 1700-metre race. There is just nothing here for him,” Peter McKay said. “I would have liked to have had a couple of runs here first before he stepped over there. Roger James has had to do the same (with Mark Twain).” Wolfgang’s first target will be The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on October 4, which holds a ballot exemption for the Melbourne Cup.“We will then see whether he needs another one into the 2500m on October 4. If he does, there’s an 1800-metre race at Sandown the week before,” McKay said. “There are plenty of options.”

Kelso pleased with Legarto

Ken Kelso was pleased with triple Group 1 winner Legarto’s (Proisir) sixth place run in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. “I thought it was a good run, and she has pulled well,” he said. “She got out of her ground and didn’t get a lot of favours in the straight. Her sectionals were very good, she was still going to the line and her best work was probably in the last 50 metres. All-in-all it was a good run at Ellerslie, a track she hasn’t particularly gone that great at and 1400 is probably a bit sharp for her now.” Legarto had one trial prior to her first-up run, finishing behind Alabama Lass in their 1050-metre heat at Te Rapa last month, and Kelso is looking forward to returning to the Hamilton track with his mare for the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on September 27. “She is on track to go to Te Rapa for the mile,” he said.

Branciforti overdue a change of luck

Capable synthetic performer Branciforti (Belardo) is presented with an opportunity to turn her form around on Wednesday as the clock ticks down on her racing career. The daughter of Belardo (Lope De Vega) will again step out on the polytrack in the Cambridge Equine Hospital Handicap (1550m) and a change of fortune is due to come the six-year-old’s way. “It’s been a really strange preparation because she’s been working great for the last couple of months,” Te Rapa trainer David Greene said. “Nothing seems to have gone right on raceday so hopefully we can turn that all around. We had targeted the race at Awapuni ($100,000 Polytrack Championship, 1400m) from a long way out and I was really happy with her, but she never really got into the contest at all.” Branciforti finished midfield and was then unplaced in the Polytrack Championship (2000m) at Cambridge and most recently on the all-weather track suffered an interrupted run in the straight. “We’d love to get another win with her as she’ll be served after this race. It’s just been very frustrating, but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” the trainer said. Branciforti will be ridden for the first time by apprentice jockey Rihaan Goyaram, whose claim will bring her weight down to 58kg. “She’s a very good synthetic horse [four wins] and with her rating it makes it a bit harder to place her on the grass,” Greene said.

12 for St Mark’s Basilica

Piazza San Marco (Credit: Patrick McCann)

Piazza San Marco (2 c ex Willow by American Pharoah) broke his maiden at the second time of asking when he landed an event over a mile and a half at Galway on Tuesday and in the process provided Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) with his 12th individual winner. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the colt defeated Hamiyan (Wootton Bassett) by three and a quarter lengths with a further three lengths back to Acclamatic (Acclamation) in third. Bred by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt and now raced by Coolmore and partners, Piazza San Marco’s is bred in the purple being out of Listed winner and Group 3-placed American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) mare Willow, who is herself a daughter of multiple Group 1-winning champion Peeping Fawn (Danehill). Peeping Fawn is the dam of five other winners, including Listed winner September (Deep Impact), who was placed at Group 1 level on three occasions. St Mark’s Basilica’s first-crop northern hemisphere-bred winners are headed by one stakes winner in the shape of Thesecretadversary and three stakes performers. The son of Siyouni (Pivotal) will stand the upcoming breeding season at Coolmore’s Hunter Valley base for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Eight for Victor Ludorum

Darley shuttler Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) scored his eighth individual winner when the Victoire Magique (2 c ex Purple Magic by Rip Van Winkle) broke his maiden in a 2000-metre event at Lyon Parilly on Tuesday. The colt defeated Proof (Dubawi) by a length and a half with a further length back to Ranavalona (Study Of Man) in third. Purchased by French Projects for 40,000gns at Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year, the colt is out of the four-time winner Purple Magic (Rip Van Winkle), making him a half-brother to winner Enchantment (Kodiac). Victor Ludorum will be represented by his first southern hemisphere-bred runners later this season. He has returned to Darley Kelvinside base where he commands a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

152 for Lope De Vega

Ballylinch Stud-based sire Lope De Vega, another son of the breed-shaping Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), chalked up his 152nd individual stakes winner when Ozone (2 f ex Starifique by Sea The Stars) took out Tuesday’s Criterium De Lyon (Listed, 1600m) at Lyon Parilly. Trained by Christophe Ferland for owner breeders Wertheimer & Frere, the filly pulled impressively three and a half lengths clear in the final stages to beat Family Secret, who is by Darley’s first-season shuttler Victor Ludorum. Out of the winning Listed-placed mare Starifique (Sea The Stars), Ozone is a three-quarter sister to her dam’s Group 3-winning half-brother, Ecrivain. Meanwhile, Starifique is also a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Green Spirit (Kingman).

Mulberry Racing join the action at buoyant first session of Keeneland September Sale

Mulberry Racing made their presence felt during the opening session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Monday when they purchased a Quality Road (Elusive Quality) colt out of dual Royal Ascot winner Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) for US$550,000 (approx. AU$833,000).

Backed by billionaire investor Mike Gregg, Mulberry Racing made headlines earlier this year when purchasing Star Entertainment’s slot for The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m). The operation are behind a progressive stable of horses prepared by Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup, who is in Kentucky to help with their buying in the US.

Offered by Indian Creek as agent for Stonestreet Farm, the colt is a half-brother to stakes-winner American Rascal (Curlin) and is likely to remain in the US for now with Brendan Walsh set to train the youngster.

Coolmore partners joined the action during the opening session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale where figures once again were heading through the roof.

MV Magnier of Coolmore teamed up with Peter Brant and Winchell Thoroughbreds to buy a colt by Gun Runner (Candy Ride) for a session-topping $3.3 million (approx. AU$4,997,400)

The son of the Three Chimneys powerhouse sire was consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa.

Out of Grade 2 winner Thoughtfully (Tapit), the colt is from the family of Grade 1 winners Furlough (Easy Goer), Dancing Spree (Nijinsky) and Fantastic Find (Mr. Prospector). Catalogued as Lot 177, the youngster is a relative of an individual that the operation knows well as last year Magnier and Brant's White Birch Farm bought the youngsters half-brother by Curlin (Smart Strike) for $1.3 million.

"He's by Gun Runner, and all the lads really liked him," Magnier told BloodHorse.

Of the Curlin relation, he added: "Chad [Brown, trainer] actually likes him quite a bit, so hopefully he'll win soon enough"

"We knew he [Hip 177] was a very smooth, very good horse by a great sire who had another Grade 1 winner [Brant in the Del Mar Futurity], from a prolific female family," said Hill 'n' Dale Farm's John Sikura.

"After a million dollars, you're just watching and hoping. You never know where they're going to wind up, but the good thing is, I knew we were strong going in, a multiplicity of interest from strong people. After that, you're just a spectator in the process, and hopefully they all get brave and stay brave."

The top-priced filly and second overall was a daughter of Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), who was consigned by Hinkle Farms and sold to David Lanigan and Ted Durcan on behalf of the Heider family for $1.7 million (approx. AU$2,574,400).

Scott Heider said: "There are two fillies on the page [Surf N Sand and Coco As In Chanel] that we raced and were stakes winners for us. We knew the family, and we really like the Hinkle family. They raise very good horses. We looked at a lot of good fillies in Book 1 and I told [my team], 'This is the one I want'. I had no idea we would have to wrestle that hard to get it done."

The opening session posted a record average price of $653,208 (approx. AU$989,200) and sold 15 horses for $1 million or more, the highest number since 2006.

Total sales for 106 horses were $69,240,000 (approx. AU$104,855,000), which jumped 26 per cent from last year while the median rose 19 per cent from $450,000 to $537,500 (approx. AU$814,000).

"We saw a really healthy environment,” Keeneland vice president of sales, Tony Lacy, said.

"Everybody here that came to buy horses felt that they had to spend more to get them. They were willing to do it and they had fun doing it. At the end of the day that’s what we’re trying to create: a good fun environment. We put the right horses in front of the right people."

There was sustained demand for the first crop of the 2022 horse of the year Flightline (Tapit) as his offspring filled places right at the top of the standings.

Lane's End's unbeaten champion had two of the five most expensive yearlings on the day and three of the top ten. Flightline ended up with nine yearlings selling at an average of $975,000 (approx. AU$1,476,500), which was a figure bettered only by Gun Runner’s $1,026,000 (approx. AU$1,553,700) for ten sold.

Japanese owner Naohiro Sakaguchi signed for his most expensive offspring of the session, reaching $1.7 million (approx. AU$2,574,400) for a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Promise Keeper (Constitution) and stakes winner Wicked Awesome (Awesome Again). He colt was offered by Warrendale Sales.

He will head to trainer Makoto Saito, who said: "He looks like he will fit in Japan. We feel like Flightline has good potential. Flightline is a favourite in Japan."
