Run To The Rose

‘You had to be buoyed by his last start’ – Raging Force set for another step up the ladder

Latecomer Raging Force (Cosmic Force) has had to play catch-up in striving to reach the top echelon of the nation’s young horses, but trainer Peter Snowden feels he can again show he belongs there in Saturday’s Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m).

The Darby Racing runner did show up early in one way, winning impressively at Sydney’s first official two-year-old trials at Kensington last September.

That earned him second-favouritism for Randwick’s Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) but he could manage only sixth.

What's On

On closer inspection, he was found to be sore behind following the run, precipitating a lengthy spell of a few months. Hopes were held for a return in the new year but immaturity coupled with noticeable weight gain triggered the decision to geld him, and spell him some more.

The autumn passed him by, while Run To The Rose rivals such as Nepotism (Brutal), Rivellino (Too Darn Hot), Wodeton (Wootton Bassett), Devil Night (Extreme Choice), Skyhook (Written Tycoon) and the race’s sole filly Tempted (Street Boss) shared much of the two-year-old spoils.

Finally unleashed on June 1, however, Raging Force has been a revelation, winning all four starts since then.

Last time out he stepped up to black type for his first major test - in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) - and passed with flying colours as favourite, leading, steadying after laying in on Wodeton at the 100 metres, and coming away again to score by 1.4 lengths.

This Saturday’s examination is still tougher. While he beat six home last start, he’ll face a 15-horse field in the Run To The Rose, jumping from gate eight for new rider Zac Lloyd after Tommy Berry was suspended for that San Domenico tangle with Wodeton.

Still, he’s favourite at around $3.20 ahead of Wodeton and Tempted at $5, and it’s a rating with which Snowden agrees ahead of a run that will help inform which stallion-making race the Run To The Rose’s lone gelding will head towards - Rosehill’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) or Flemington’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Asked if Raging Force had caught up to the cream of his crop, Snowden said: “I think so.”

So we decided to geld him. That turned him into a racehorse, not a breeding proposition, but it’s made the horse. It’s made him focus a lot more. He showed good ability early but he’s definitely better now that he’s gelded

Peter Snowden

“He had a setback after his first start, and had some time out, and in that time out he got very heavy, and he was pretty coltish,” the trainer told ANZ News.

“So we decided to geld him. That turned him into a racehorse, not a breeding proposition, but it’s made the horse. It’s made him focus a lot more. He showed good ability early but he’s definitely better now that he’s gelded.

“He’s not as heavy as he was and his attitude is very, very good, so his owners have done the right thing and they’ve got a nice horse on their hands because of it.”

Snowden was full of praise for Raging Force’s San Domenico triumph, in which he became the fifth stakes winner from 85 runners (5.88 per cent) for Newgate Farm’s nine-year-old sire Cosmic Force (Deep Field), who’s standing his sixth season this spring at a a slightly increased $16,500 (inc GST).

“You had to be buoyed by his last start. He won well,” Snowden said.

“Wodeton was the second favourite and he put it to my horse. My horse had to dig really deep. He did interfere with Wodeton, but he pulled right away and won by nearly two lengths. Wodeton was never going to beat him.”

Bred by veterinarian Richard McClenahan of Mullaglass Stud as the fourth foal out of Melbourne Listed placegetter Miss Loren (Stryker), and bought by Darby Racing at Inglis Classic for $150,000, Raging Force should also be undaunted by the likelihood of a soft track, with his four wins scored in the Soft five-to-seven range.

Snowden is also untroubled by Saturday being his first try beyond 1100 metres.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll get a good 1200 metres,” the veteran trainer said.

“He’s in good order, he’s come on well since his last start and we’re happy with him.

“He’s got to improve again for Saturday, but I can’t see anything wrong with the horse. He hasn’t gone backwards, so I’m hoping he can step up to the level again on Saturday.”

Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton - striving to become Wootton Bassett’s first Australian-born stakes winner - has on his side the likelihood of improvement gained from his first-up run in the San Domenico.

Likewise Skyhook, an $8.50 chance, who humped 60.5 kilograms to victory first-up in the quality handicap The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m).

Slipper third placegetter Tempted and ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Nepotism ($11) are resuming, while another interesting first-up contender is Newgate-China Horse Club’s North England (Farnan).

North England (Credit: Sportpix)

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt was another winner at the first official two-year-old trials, and shot to the top of Golden Slipper betting after a Breeders’ Plate third and a win in the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m).

However, he didn’t quite fulfil expectations in the autumn, although a disappointing first-up fifth in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) gave rise to a decent 3.9 lengths sixth in the Slipper, at $21, after racing on the pace.

North England then backed up to win the juvenile sprinters’ consolation of the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before a spell.

He’s been fittened up for his resumption with three barrier trials - for a third, a fourth, and a 0.94-length second to four-year-old sprint sensation Private Harry (Harry Angel).

Still, Waterhouse was a length short of her usual confidence in previewing North England’s run this Saturday, intimating the $23 chance would be better suited second-up in his main target of the Golden Rose on September 27.

“He’s a lovely horse,” Waterhouse told ANZ. “He’s matured and grown beautifully. I was looking at him yesterday and thinking how well he’d grown and developed.

“I’ve always thought he was an extremely talented horse. I always thought he was one of our best two-year-olds.

“He turned in a fabulous run in the Slipper. We don’t have any better two-year-olds than what runs in the Slipper, and he wasn’t beaten far.

“This is his test to see if he shapes up against the best of the best but he’s got the right attitude.

“Being a realist, he’s going into a hard race against some very competitive colts. Whatever he does, he’ll improve on it.

“Hopefully he’ll be able to be a Golden Rose horse. That’s what one dreams of, because if they’re a Golden Rose horse then they’re a stallion proposition.”

While North England has led and faded in his two attempts at 1200 metres, Waterhouse resumed normal service in discussing that distance this Saturday.

“That’s one thing I’m not worried about,” she said. “He’ll run it with his eyes shut.”

Rivellino (Credit: Sportpix)

Running against North England’s chance, however, is that Tim Clark will have to jump him from the widest gate.

“He’s got good gatespeed,” Waterhouse said. “Has he got quite the speed to get over from that gate and lead? I’m not sure, but he’ll be right in the mix.”

Rivellino shone in winning his first three starts including the Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) and Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), before powering home for fourth in the Slipper.

While he conspicuously made ground for fourth in the 1100-metre San Domenico, trainer Kris Lees feels he’ll need still more than the extra 100 metres of the Run To The Rose - for which he’s a $21 shot - as he builds towards the 1400-metre Golden Rose.

“He’s come along well from the San Domenico,” Lees told ANZ. “I thought that was a very good run under the circumstances. It was a small field, they didn’t go very hard in the first half of it, and he had to come from the back.

“Whether he’ll find these a bit sharp over 1200 metres, I’m not sure. He’ll probably want even further.”

Six for Puissance De Lune

Sav On Ice (4 h ex Shemakhan by Mastercraftsman) became the sixth individual stakes winner for Swettenham Stud stallion Puissance De Lune (Shamardal) when landing Wednesday’s Balaklava Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Balaklava. Ridden by Rochelle Milnes for trainer Darryl Carrison, the four-year-old entire defeated Pudding (Tavistock) by a length with a further 0.2 lengths back to Watadeel (Dundeel) in third. Wednesday’s win was Sav On Ice’s fourth from his last five outings, taking his career total to five wins from 11 starts and over $180,000 in prize-money. Bred by Mr R Dunnett, Sav On Ice is one of four winners out of the unraced Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) mare Shemakhan, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Top Act (O’Reilly). Puissance De Lune is standing for a private fee this season.

Stallion shares to the fore in September (Early) Online Sale

Ole Kirk (Credit: Vinery Stud)

Shares in leading young stallions Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) and Southport Tycoon (Written Tycoon) dominated bidding in the Inglis Digital September (Early) Online Sale, finishing as the two highest-priced lots as the sale closed on Wednesday.

The Ole Kirk share topped the sale, selling to Eric Yeung for $600,000. The one per cent share result sees Ole Kirk valued at an astonishing $60,000,000.

Yeung also purchased the share in Southport Tycoon, which he paid $180,000 for.

Adam White of Vinery Stud – which offered the Ole Kirk share on behalf of a client – was delighted with the outcome.

“The great thing about Inglis Digital is you can trade something like a stallion share whenever it suits you really,’’ White said.

“This one was owned by an outside shareholder and they were in a position where they weren’t really able to use it so it made sense to trade it while the stallion is really hot and they’ve got a great result today.

“I was surprised with the price to be fair. It’s a lot of money. But I guess you can’t get into the horse, this is the only way to get in and he’s obviously started the new season very well with a run of winners heading into the spring so it’s great to be able to welcome a new investor into him today.’’

The next top lots in the sale were shared at $135,000 – Cannon Hayes Stud bought the broodmare Nags To Riches (Written Tycoon) and Darby Racing purchased the five-year-old racemare Catahoula (Shalaa).

Cannon Hayes’ Dave Morrissey confirmed Nags To Riches would visit young Coolmore stallion Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) this season.

“You’re always hoping to get them for less but she’s worth what she’s worth I suppose,’’ Morrissey said. “I think Home Affairs is a great match for her.’’

In total the September (Early) Sale grossed $3,376,950 with Catahoula ($135,000), Nags To Riches ($135,000), Exclusivity (Exceed And Excel) ($130,000), Secret Galaxy (I Am Invincible) ($130,000), Anjeo (Galileo) ($120,000) and Idolised (Zoustar) ($100,000) joining the stallion shares as six-figure lots.

Entries are now open for the September (Late) Sale, which will run from September 19-24. Entries will remain open until midnight on Wednesday, September 17. To enter click here.

Tom Kitten bidding to get back on track

Sam Freedman is hoping that new stable recruit Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) can bounce back when he lines up in Saturday's Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. The Godolphin homebred was scratched at the barriers before the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last month and is likely to be in need of this weekend's first-up run. “He will improve for the run, no doubt,” Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, told Racing.com. “He is obviously stepping out at the mile, first-up. It’s not going to be an easy task, taking on those two Waller mares, but I’m sure he’ll be closing off well. I’m not sure a small field really suits him. He probably would appreciate a bit of tempo and being able to be smothered up and work through them, much like he did a couple of times at Flemington before. I think Saturday, for us, is really just about making sure he is back on track.” Freedman revealed that, all being well, Tom Kitten would go on to the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on October 4 before a crack at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). “His record at Flemington is impeccable, so you’d be silly not to be keeping there, when you can,” he said. “We’ll get through Saturday and then we can make a plan. There are so many options for a horse, like him. That is the beauty of this time of year. The Cox Plate is still front of mind.”

Vinrock to bounce back

Jockey Mark Zahra is expecting Vinrock (I Am Invincible) to put his best foot forward when he tackles Saturday's Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. The three-year-old colt, who has won both the VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and ATC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), was beaten for the first time in his career when finishing fourth first-up in the McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield last month. “I always thought he’d need the run,” Zahra told Racing.com of the Matt Laurie-trained colt. “His trials were that of a colt that needed his mind at the races and getting that bit of atmosphere around him. He needs to improve from that run, but he gets to 1400 [metres] and has a run under his belt. I’m thinking we’re going to see the best of him on Saturday. A 1400-metre tempo is going to suit him a lot better, so is Flemington. He won the Sires over this track and trip, so I think he is going to improve just because of that.”

Autumn Glow bids to extend winning run

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) will bid to extend her unbeaten streak to six when she tackles Saturday’s Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill, as she continues her path towards the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). The Chris Waller-trained mare resumed with a strong win in the Toy Show Quality (Gr 3, 1100m) at Randwick last month despite being unsuited by the Heavy 10 surface, and Waller expects further improvement stepping up in trip. “Everything at home indicates that she is. I’m very happy with her,” Waller said. “That first run is pretty important to see they’ve come back well but also for fitness. The 1300 [metres] will probably suit her a little bit better than the 1100 [metres].” Opening as a $1.55 favourite, the four-year-old has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting racehorses, but Waller is keeping a lid on expectations. “She shows some exciting things but we want to see her tick that Group 1 box before we start talking a bit more,” he said. “But she’s got all the signs of a nice horse and we haven’t found the ceiling with her yet.”

Hawkes colts set for Run To The Rose

Nepotism (Credit: Sportpix)

The Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes stable will be represented by two Group 1-winning colts, Nepotism (Brutal) and Devil Night (Extreme Choice) in the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. "He's a baby. He is maturing," Michael Hawkes said of Nepotism, who will be first-up on Saturday. "He is different and different in a good way because what you saw was just raw ability." Nepotism's only defeat came when he finished third in the Todman Stakes behind Tentyris (Street Boss) and Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) on debut, before registering consecutive victories in the Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). "To be fair, he should nearly be unbeaten," Hawkes said. "Wodeton came in on him up the straight [in the Todman Stakes] and he should have at least run second. With a bit more luck and if he'd had momentum, he probably nearly wins the race. He was in the best lead-up to the [Golden] Slipper, which is a Todman. You don't get much better than that. His form is ridiculous. He's a really nice colt." Devil Night will be having his second start of the preparation after finishing strongly through the line when fifth in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) first-up. "He was in behind them and they just outsprinted him and took that bit of an edge off," Hawkes said. "Personally, I thought the last fifty [metres] and through the line the next fifty was ridiculous. He could be in a Golden Rose. He could be in a Caulfield Guineas. We're leaving our options open with him because we thought he was more of a sprinter but he's relaxing well so you never know." Devil Night is a dual acceptor for the Poseidon Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington, and has drawn barrier one in The Run To The Rose while Nepotism will jump from gate five.

Officiate scores at Canterbury

The 2024 Magic Millions Horses In Training Sale topper Officiate (Justify) broke through for his maiden victory at his third career start at Canterbury on Wednesday. Stating a $2.70 favourite, the Chris Waller-trained colt jumped well from barrier two to settle midfield one off the fence, before making his run at the top of the straight and working home strongly in the testing conditions to fight out the finish and defeat Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Koibito (Satono Aladdin) by 0.1 lengths. Stablemate Bendrodt (Exceed And Excel) finished a further 0.9 lengths behind in third. “He didn’t quite know how to put them away, but he was the fit horse today and had to dig deep, but got the job done,” said stable representative Charlie Duckworth. “He’ll take good confidence going forward.” Bred by Coolmore Stud, Officiate was purchased by KO Thoroughbreds, Munce Racing and Arthur Hoyeau for $300,000 out of the Coolmore draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, before being re-offered through the KO Racing draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Horses In Training Sale, where Yulong secured him for a sale-topping $700,000. A half-sister to the stakes-placed Lady Young (Fastnet Rock), Officiate is the fourth winner from as many to race out of Port Augusta (Encosta De Lago), herself a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner and champion juvenile colt Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill), Group 3 scorer Milanova (Danehill) and stakes winners Big Viking (Theatrical) and Heart Of Oak (Woodman). The family also includes New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sherwood Forest (Fastnet Rock).

Golden Century breaks maiden

The Chris Waller-trained Golden Century (Pierro) broke his maiden at the 12th attempt on Wednesday when landing a 1900-metre contest at Canterbury. Placed in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) as a three-year-old last season, the gelded son of Pierro (Lonhro) had been beaten as an odds-on favourite in both of his prior starts as a four-year-old this season but put that right on Wednesday. Ridden by James McDonald and again sent off as an odds-on chance, Golden Century ran out a clear 2.1 lengths winner over The Big Blue (Ocean Park) and is now being aimed towards the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m). "Hopefully we can get him towards the Metropolitan," Waller's assistant Charlie Duckworth said. "It's a long way from a maiden to Group 1 but it is a handicap. He has already raced in that grade, and up in grade where there is more tempo in races will be beneficial to him. He will take some good confidence from today's win. He stays really well, we obviously know that, it's just about ironing out any kinks he's got in his mannerisms."

Regal Award wins second-up

Regal Award (Ole Kirk) put his hand up for a potential crack at the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) when making it third time lucky at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday. Lining up in the 1300-metre maiden under Blake Shinn, the Phillip Stokes-trained gelding impressed with a 2.3 lengths success over Crusader Voyage (Camelot) and subsequently dropped from $51 to $17 in the Caulfield Guineas betting. "It didn't work out the other day at The Valley [when fifth], I'm not sure he's a Valley horse either, it just got a bit messy," Stokes told Racing.com. "Today, I just said, 'Let him free flow' and he was tough, he ran quick sectionals and was tough at the end. He's a really nice horse going forward. He's not there yet, I don't know how deep we'll go with him into the spring, but he's going to be a nice horse in the autumn … I think 1400 metres, maybe a mile [should suit]."

Blue Point filly scores at Sandown

Blue Point (Shamardal) filly Point Barrow made it two wins from three starts on Wednesday when scoring in a 1000-metre Benchmark 64 event at Sandown-Hillside. The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained three-year-old was far too good in the closing stages as she pulled 1.8 lengths clear of Shinjina (Snitzel), backing up her maiden win over 1100 metres at Bendigo last month. "She did a great job. She doesn't have a lot of tactical speed, which is probably her biggest flaw at the moment, but she's got a very good turn of foot, which she showed there," Sam Freedman told Racing.com. "Today was a bit of a litmus test for her to see if she could obviously race onto some stakes races, we've got good ambitions for her through the spring and there's plenty of options. She's capable of stretching out over a bit further and a daughter of Blue Point ridden off the speed, she's got a bright future for sure."

Briasa impresses in Rosehill trial

Last season's T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Briasa (Smart Missile) is in good form ahead of his Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) campaign and proved that wellbeing with a 1000-metre trial victory at Rosehill on Tuesday. The Team Hawkes-trained five-year-old defeated Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Marhoona (Snitzel) by 2.8 lengths under Tyler Schiller, delighting his connections ahead of his return in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) on September 20. "It was great," Michael Hawkes, who trains in partnership with his brothers John and Wayne, told Racing.com. "He jumped, he got into a lovely rhythm, just doing it all himself, and he hit the line really good. He's in the right frame of mind. He's right where we need him to be. He's had two nice trials now, his fitness levels are getting up and it's exciting. He resumes in The Shorts and then obviously the Premiere and then The Everest. At this stage he'll have the two runs into it, but we're taking it race by race. I can't fault the horse."

Joliestar confirmed for Everest

Chris Waller Racing (CWR) and Partners have confirmed that Joliestar (Zoustar) will once again represent their slot in the 2025 The Everest at Randwick. The CWR and Partners slot comprises Neville and Jenny Morgan, Chris Waller Racing, Peter and Patricia Tighe (Magic Bloodstock), Noel and Maria Greenhalgh, and Ingham Racing. Joliestar has established herself as one of the best sprinting mares in the country. Having run seventh in last season's Everest, the now five-year-old mare has since gone on to land a further two Group 1s in both the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) during the Queensland Winter Carnival. "She's just gone from strength to strength," a statement from Waller read on Wednesday. "What she did in the Newmarket was exceptional, and to back it up in Brisbane shows the quality she possesses. She's matured beautifully, and we couldn't be more excited to have her back for The Everest."

Scarborough next for Esha

Shane Nichols will look to step Esha (Extreme Choice) back to 1200 metres in the Scarborough Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 26, after the filly pulled up slightly lame from last Friday’s Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m). “That is the plan, at this stage,” Nichols told Racing.com. Esha was galloped on by Skybird (Exosphere) in the straight but her trainer reported she had recovered well. “She took a bit of bark off and she was quite tender post-race, but recovered quickly,” Nichols said. “We got softened up a bit in the run. They went along at a pretty strong tempo. Just as she was wilting a bit, and Skybird was looking for the run, she galloped on her hind pastern.” Despite the interference, Esha was beaten less than three lengths in her first elite-level appearance at just her third career start and Nichols still holds Group 1 aspirations. “She is very quick,” he said.

Prebble undergoes spinal surgery

Talented apprentice Tom Prebble has undergone spinal surgery following a fall at Warrnambool aboard Andrew Bobbin's Pulveriser (Preferment) on Tuesday. Prebble was conscious when taken to Warrnambool Hospital for assessment but was later airlifted to The Alfred Hospital. In a statement late on Wednesday morning, the Victorian Jockeys Association said: "Thomas Prebble has undergone spinal surgery at The Alfred Hospital. He is being supported by medical and nursing staff. His condition will be monitored. The family would like to thank everyone for their messages of support, checking on Thomas and his wellbeing. It is greatly appreciated. In order for the family to devote their time and energy to provide as much support as they can to Thomas, it is kindly requested that their privacy be respected."

Tardelli on quest for Group 1 honours

It was a successful day at Tuesday’s Ellerslie trials for trainer Stephen Marsh with Group 1 hopeful Tardelli (I Am Invincible), who won his open 1100-metre heat under jockey George Rooke. “He’s a really smart horse, we haven’t seen the best of him yet and the goal is obviously to win a Group 1 with him,” Marsh said. The colt has had two Group placings so far, running third in the Levin Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) and second in the Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m). “He might go to the Matamata Cup and then maybe look at something like the Thorndon Mile,” said Marsh. The rest of Marsh’s group at Ellerslie included Ardalio (Ardrossan) who came runner-up in her trial. “We would like to get her in the big sprints later and have a crack at the Telegraph with her,” Marsh said. Glamour Tycoon (Written Tycoon), Erin Go Bragh (Vadamos) and Bourbon Proof (Justify) all won their trials.

Myakkabelle in search of elusive stakes success

Myakkabelle (War Decree) ran well in her three-year-old season, but a stakes win eluded the Ben and Ryan Foote-trained mare. She won two and placed in six of her ten starts last term, including placings in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m), and David & Karym Ellis Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2000m). The filly placed at her trial over 1300 metres at Ellerslie on Tuesday. “Her three-year-old season was good without a lot of luck,” Ryan Foote said. “From a wide draw she had to get back in the Oaks, which made it a bit hard. We have given her a good break and she seems to have come back really well. She was just there for a day out yesterday. We were very happy with her trial and the way she came through it. Vinnie [Colgan] was very happy with how she went and how she felt. She is a horse that doesn’t show a lot in her trials, but she looks to be in for a good prep after yesterday.” She is nominated for the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) next month. The Odyssey (Zacinto) did well in his 1300-metre heat, and Foote is hopeful of a big spring. “He has never been a horse to light up at the trials,” Foote said. “Vinnie was happy with how he felt. He is one to look out for when he gets up to 2000 metres.” The Odyssey won the Remutaka Classic (2100m) last year before going on to place in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). Greenwich (War Decree), who has returned to New Zealand after a couple years in Hong Kong also trialled well on Tuesday. “He was a very good galloper and he seems to have come back the same,” said Foote. Azeezle (Exceed And Excel), Lough Eske (I Am Invincible) and Judicial (Written Tycoon) also trialled well, with Foote saying: “All three of them are quite cool horses and they seem to have come back really well.”

Well-bred filly Passiflora scores on debut

Three-year-old filly Passiflora (Farnan) scored on debut in the NZ Horse Ambulance Maiden (970m) at Cambridge Synthetic on Wednesday. She had won an 850-metre trial at Te Awamutu a fortnight ago and was backed into a $4.70 favourite second favourite on Wednesday behind fellow debutant Zivou (Bivouac), beating that rival by 1.3 lengths at the line. “She has got a fair bit of speed this filly and it was a very good effort from the outside gate. I think she is going to get better and better. She rails like a greyhound, she is not overly big, but she has got a tonne of speed,” Steven Ramsay, who trains in partnership with Julia Ritchie, said. Winning rider Jasmine Fawcett also said: “She showed today that she has got a bit of ability, so I am quite happy with her.” Passiflora is out of Lilikoi (Charm Spirit), who won the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and placed in the Royal Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m), and Ramsay hopes Passiflora is capable of reaching the same heights as her dam. “She is out of a nice enough mare who won a Eulogy,” he said. “She is not overly big but has still got a bit of upside still.”

McNab ruled out for bulk of the spring

An injury has ruled champion jockey Michael McNab out of most of the spring racing. McNab was set to partner a two-year-old at Tuesday’s Ellerslie trials when he was kicked and subsequent x-rays at Auckland Hospital revealed a leg fracture below the knee. McNab’s agent Aidan Rodley said: “I have spoken to Michael, and he is really gutted. He had made such a strong start to the season and was obviously hoping to capitalise on that through the spring and beyond. It looks like he will be out for between six and eight weeks.” McNab had posted 17 winners to be six clear of Bruno Queiroz at the top of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Premiership for the current 2025/26 season. La Crique (Vadamos) was one of McNab’s key sprint mounts following their runner-up finish in last Saturday’s Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie.

Vale Hec Anderton

Hec Anderton, one of New Zealand racing’s most respected horsemen, has died at the age of 84. He passed away at the Otago Community Hospice in Dunedin last week, surrounded by his wife Pat and their children. His death came just hours after Descaro (Ghibellines), a horse he bred and raced in partnership, won at Wingatui. He rode his first winner at Beaumont in 1956 at the age of 15. Among his best rides was the 1958 Churchill Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton on Fountainhead (Gold Nib), and in 1960 he captured three races on Ravelston (Kurdistan) across the Riverton Easter meeting, a rare treble that stood out in his career as a jockey. He began training in partnership with his father Hector in the early 1960s before branching out on his own at Wingatui, where he would prepare some 350 winners. His first star was Crown Agent (Advocat General), who won 12 races in the 1970s, but his finest came later with Mellseur (Causeur) , winner of the 1980 Penfold’s Chardon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) (now the Thorndon Mile), along with a string of feature races. In partnership with his son Steven, he trained The Jewel (O’Reilly), who won the 2002 New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and International Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), as well as Sand Sweeper (Sandtrap), a multiple stakes winner including the 2005 Canterbury Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2000m). He co-bred De Montfort (Random Chance), winner of the 1999 Dunedin Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) with daughter Debbie in the saddle, and Loftys Gift (Ghibellines), who captured the same race in March this year. Anderton is survived by Pat, their children, and an extended family whose involvement in the sport ensures that his name will live on.

UK: Asfoora set for Flying Five Stakes

Asfoora (Credit: Grossick Racing)

Following her success in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York last month, dual Group 1 winner Asfoora (Flying Artie) will run in the Flying Five Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at the Curragh on Sunday. However, trainer Henry Dwyer won’t fly out for the run and will wait until Asfoora's following start in the Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp should she perform well at the Curragh. "She bounced out of that last run, and we can't be any happier with her going into Sunday,” said Dwyer. "If I do go, it will be a late dash. I'll go Saturday night and maybe get there an hour before the race, but I've had five trips so far and I'm definitely going over for France if she runs there. I think six trips is manageable, but seven is a bit tricky. It's a busy time of the year with plenty going on, so we might give this one a miss."

UK: Melbourne Cup runner-up Vinnie Roe dies aged 27

Vinnie Roe (Definite Article), who wrote his name into racing history with four consecutive Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) victories, has died at the age of 27. The Irish icon won 13 of his 29 starts over six seasons in training with Dermot Weld, most notably claiming the Irish St Leger each year from 2001 to 2004. He also won the Prix Royal-Oak (Gr 1, 3000m) in 2001 and was named European champion stayer at the 2002 Cartier awards. He was ridden in all but one of his races by the late, great Pat Smullen. He spent the latter years of his stallion career at Longford House Stud in Tipperary, where he lived out his retirement having been pensioned from covering duty in 2019. Vinnie Roe also rose in the racing public’s affections having appeared in three renewals of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). He finished fourth to stablemate Media Puzzle (Theatrical) in 2002, second to the mighty Makybe Diva (Desert King) in 2004 but could manage only eighth behind the latter rival the following year. He also came within a neck of winning the Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) when just denied by Royal Rebel (Robellino) in the Royal Ascot showpiece in 2002, and was third to Collier Hill (Dr Devious), one place ahead of Yeats (Sadler’s Wells), on his fifth and final crack at the Irish St Leger in 2005.

US: Ward strikes for Early Voting’s brother at Keeneland

Royal Ascot-winning trainer Wesley Ward was one of those helping to lift Tuesday's second session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale to ever greater heights as he signed for a US$2.2 million (approx. AU$3.32 million) brother of the 2022 Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) winner Early Voting. Ward's Gun Runner (Candy Ride) colt, who was one of the joint most expensive individuals in the session, is from the family of North American champion Speightstown (Gone West), Canadian champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat) and Grade 2 winners Irap (Tiznow) and Phileas Fogg (Astern). Out of the Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy) mare Amour d’Ete, he was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. During what was the final day of the premier Book 1, 111 yearlings sold through the ring for US$74,945,000 (approx. AU$113.29 million), up 16 per cent from the second session last year. The average of US$675,180 (approx. AU$1.02 million) was a new record for the session, up 11 per cent from last year’s US$611,038 while the median rose 16 per cent from US$475,000 to US$550,000 (approx. AU$831,430). Summing up Book 1, Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin said: "It felt good, we built on what we started yesterday and we expect that to continue through Book 2 and through next week. It’s just a really strong market. There were so many people in the pavilion and out back, and the grounds are full of excitement and new faces and the same faces too. It’s always good to have that continuity and steadiness. We have 20 horses that brought seven figures. Of that, 13 were sold to different buyers, and we all like to see that diversity. It was just a fabulous Book 1."

US: Coolmore go to US$3.3 million for Keeneland session topper

Coolmore's MV Magnier, Peter Brant, and Winchell Thoroughbreds teamed up to land a Gun Runner colt with a black-type-drenched pedigree for US$3.3 million (approx. AU$4.99 million) during Monday's opening session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Kentucky. The dark bay or brown colt crowned the September sale's first session which produced 15 seven-figure sales – the highest number for the first session since 2006. Among the richest purchases, four were by Three Chimneys Farm's marquee sire and 2017 Horse of the Year. Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa sold the Gun Runner colt that the farm also co-bred with Determined Stud out of the Grade 2 winner Thoughtfully (Tapit). The session topper's dam is a full-sister to stakes winner Signator, and a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Annual Report (Harlan’s Holiday) and multiple stakes winner Giant Payday (Giant’s Causeway). The September colt's third dam is Grade 1 winner Furlough (Easy Goer). Magnier and Brant's White Birch Farm paired up last year to buy the colt's half-brother by Curlin (Smart Strike) for US$1.3 million during the second session of the September sale. A total of 113 lots sold for US$71,595,000 (approx. AU$108.4 million) during the opening session, including post-ring sales, up from last year's US$57,045,000 from a similar 108 horses. The average was a single-session record of US$633,584 (approx. AU$959,370), topping last year's US$528,194, and a median of US$500,000 (approx. AU$757,090), up from last year's US$410,000. A total of 21 horses failed to meet their reserve, resulting in an RNA rate of 15.7 per cent.

US: Flightline’s first crop in high demand at Keeneland

Monday's opening session of the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale saw sustained demand for the first crop of the 2022 horse of the year Flightline (Tapit) as his offspring filled places right at the top of the standings. Lane's End's unbeaten champion had two of the five most expensive yearlings on the day and three of the top ten. Flightline ended up with nine yearlings selling at an average of US$975,000 (approx. AU$1.47 million), which was a figure beneath only that of Gun Runner. Japanese owner Naohiro Sakaguchi signed for his most expensive offspring of the session, reaching US$1.7 million (approx. AU$2.57 million) for a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Promise Keeper (Constitution) and stakes winner Wicked Awesome (Awesome Again). Consigned by Warrendale Sales, he is out of the Curlin mare Mira Alta and from the family of Grade 1 winner Great Hunter (Aptitude) and Grade 3 winner Owendale (Into Mischief). He will head to trainer Makoto Saito, who said: "He looks like he will fit in Japan. We feel like Flightline has good potential. Flightline is a favourite in Japan."

IRE: La Isla Mujeres too strong in Oyster Stakes

La Isla Mujeres (5 m Lope De Vega - Honor Bound by Authorized) registered her second career stakes win on Tuesday when beating Bonnie Moon (Le Havre) to take victory in the Oyster Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Galway. The Paddy Twomey-trained mare won by three-and-a-half lengths, with the third-placed Island Hopping (Wootton Bassett) a further head behind. Tuesday’s success added to La Isla Mujeres’ win in the Lenebane Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Roscommon in July last year.

ANZ News

Dan Alford is in the food business, specifically a Melbourne factory that bakes treats like mudcakes, biscuits, jam tarts and snowballs.

It can’t be a bad place to work. At the very least, it smells better than a stable.

What the 68-year-old also likes to do is cook up pedigrees, and he has a particularly sweet one manifesting on the tracks of Melbourne this spring in the form of Alpha Sofie (Capitalist).

The three-year-old filly was bred by Alford, his wife Linda and their long-term friend and associate Mary Anne Holland. The trio stayed in when Alpha Sofie was sold to Brisbane owner Tosh Murphy at Inglis Classic last year, for $150,000.

Starting off with Deagon-based trainer Jason Edwards, she won her second and third starts at Eagle Farm in the winter before a transfer south to Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, for whom she won her first start last Saturday in Moonee Valley’s Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

Alford has been knocking around with shares in horses since 2006, but he “got serious” about it in 2015, with brilliant results.

He fancied Written Tycoon (Iglesia) might make it as a sire and so the Alfords bought a share in Winning Rupert, who rewarded them with three stakes wins and a stallion deal, initially to Newgate Farm.

Better still, the Alfords and Holland bought into another one named Capitalist, who brought them a Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and a (far more successful) stud deal, also at Newgate.

From early on, Dan Alford pored over pedigrees seeking nuggets of gold, or at least signs of alchemy, often looking over the shoulder of a keen mare buyer in his family.

“When I was in my early 20s my brother-in-law would buy a mare from somebody that he’d know and breed from it,” Alford tells It’s In The Blood.

“He didn’t have much success. I’d look at the pedigrees, and I’d suggest this cross over this cross would work. He’d go, ‘Nah the bloke down the pub reckons …’”

Eventually, Alford grew comfortable enough from letting the people eat cake that he could afford to start breeding himself.

Again, he “mucked around with a few $500 mares” for a while but after the success of Capitalist and Winning Rupert, he took a more concerted approach. That’s resulted in him breeding a stakes winner from his first serious play.

In 2021, with Dan in the driver’s seat, the Alfords and Holland paid $150,000 for off-the-track mare Sofie’s Gold Class (Hard Spun). For a first mating they put her to Capitalist, in whom they’d retained a share for his stud career, and the result is Alpha Sofie.

It seems simple, but there was more to this recipe than merely supporting their own stallion.

Sofie’s Gold Class was an interesting case. She was essentially pinhooked - but from one yearling sale to another. She was bought at Magic Millions Adelaide for just $18,000, then - perhaps for being too lanky and unprecocious - was flipped at the Magic Millions National sale three months later for $35,000.

She’d have 23 starts for seven wins - four of those in Brisbane city class.

But all wasn’t what met the eye, partly because a clod of mud had met hers.

“First of all, when they bought her she kicked out and broke the tip of her pedal bone,” Alford said. “They had to put her in the paddock as a two-year-old and let her recover from that.”

The large and scopey filly in fact wouldn’t race until she was four. Eventually, she won three of her first six starts, from 1400 metres to 1600 metres, before being tried over middle distances.

“Because she was big and leggy, they tried her over trips like 2000 metres and 2200 metres. She failed at that, and they realised she was a run-on sprinter,” Alford said of Sofie’s Gold Class, who eventually won three on a bounce in 2020, from 1200 metres to 1350 metres.

“After those three wins, she was about to go to a stakes race, but she copped a clod of mud in her eye, got an eye infection, and again had to be put out.”

Sofie’s Gold Class never won again, but in her third try among four at Listed class, she cracked it for some black type - albeit somewhat faint - with a third in the Sunshine Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m) in January, 2021.

While a multiple city winner with black type makes appeal at a broodmare sale, there was a good deal more thought behind the purchase than racetrack performance, as Alford explains.

“After Capitalist had had probably three crops, I spoke to Jackson Biers,” Alford said.

Biers had worked closely with Capitalist, first at Peter Snowden’s stable, then as Newgate’s assistant stud manager.

“I said, ‘You’re in the breeding barn - what are you seeing in regard to the stallion?’” Alford said of Capitalist, who by official accounts stands 16.0 hands in his shoes.

“He recommended I buy a big, scopey, long-legged mare for Capitalist, because he throws a really good topline, but if you’ve got no leg and no stretch, he’s not going to throw leg and stretch.”

So Alford went to the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2021 looking for type. He’d first made a short-list of three pedigrees he felt would go well with Capitalist, and it was Sofie’s Gold Class who best fitted the bill on physicality.

“You can have a mare who’s as small as a dog and she’ll throw a very small filly and you think, ‘Oh my god the horse is tiny!’, and you think ‘Well you sent the mare to a small stallion’,” Alford said.

Capitalist isn’t the biggest stallion, Alford notes, but has many alluring attributes such as his “huge arsenal and his huge girth”.

The consistent 12-year-old makes several compelling arguments, with 377 winners at 64 per cent of runners, 26 stakes winners including two at the elite level, and having just finished his fourth and fifth seasons with runners in ninth place on the general sires’ table.

That’s why Newgate moved to make him what its boss Henry Field calls “a no-brainer” choice for breeders this year by dropping his service fee from $66,000 to $44,000 (inc GST).

Sophie’s Gold Class also came with a star second dam in Victory Vein (Mr Henrysee). Australia’s Champion 2YO of 2002, she won Randwick’s elite two-year-old double of the Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2002, coming agonisingly close to landing the Triple Crown after a 0.2 length second in Calaway Gal’s (Clang) Golden Slipper.

After winning seven more stakes races, she went to stud. Two of her daughters produced Group winners, and now a granddaughter has a stakes winner.

For good measure, Sophie’s Gold Class’s fifth dam Ambasssadress (Idomeneo) produced two stakes winners.

These credentials were strong reassurance alongside Alford’s belief he’d bought the right shape of mare for Capitalist.

“You really have to match type first, then work on the pedigree and look at the nicks,” Alford said.

On that last score, Capitalist over Sofie’s Gold Class comes up singing, with Alpha Sofie’s pedigree a lacework of several intricate repetitions.

She has double Danehill (Danzig). That can put a breeder off, but at least this example is statistically the best way of the three - gender balanced.

And while double Danehill has been anathema to some, regular readers might have twigged that it’s showing up in many recent stakes winners featured in this column. Perhaps time, pushing it deeper into pedigrees, is diluting any negative impacts.

In this case Danehill is at 4f x 4m, through Capitalist’s second dam Compulsion, and Sofie’s Gold Class’s damsire Redoute’s Choice.

“They used to be breeding double Danehill at two-by-three and all that. It was ridiculous,” Alford said. “At four-by-five, or four-four it’s not so bad, and if you can sex-balance it, all the better.”

Having double Danehill of course brings a double of his sire Danzig (Northern Dancer), but in another piece of reinforcement Danzig is there two more times, for 5f, 5m x 3m, 5m in total. The first and third of those are Angel Fever, dam of Fushaici Pegasus (Mr Prospector), and Alpha Sofie’s damsire Hard Spun, who’s gone fairly in the top 25 of the US broodmare sires’ charts in most of the past five years.

At 4m x 5m is the great Mr Prospector (Raise A Native), a duplication which has, again, shown up in many class runners featured here. He’s the sire of Capitalist’s damsire Fusaichi Pegasus, and Victory Vein’s grandsire.

Capitalist (Credit: Newgate)

But what perhaps excited Alford the most was this mating would bring a doubling of the great American blue hen Best In Show (Traffic Judge), at 7f x 7f.

She comes in strong on the top line as the dam of Sex Appeal (Buckpasser), who’s at the start of the sireline that runs Try My Best - Last Tycoon - Iglesia - Written Tycoon - Capitalist.

In the bottom half, Best In Show is the dam of Show Lady (Sir Ivor), the third dam of Sofie’s Gold Class’s damsire, the great Redoute’s Choice.

“Best In Show was definitely in my mind,” Alford said. “When I saw her duplicated I was very keen.”

Deeper in, the whole is underpinned by the great Nearco (Pharos), with 21 appearances, 12 from Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim) and eight from that other great blue hen Natalma (Native Dancer).

Alpha Sofie is also powered by some strong Australian lines. Star Kingdom (Stardust) is there six times in generations seven through nine, via one daughter in Fairy Dream and three different sons in Biscay (thrice), Noholme and Kaoru Star.

The last of those, Alford reveals, brings up a terrific question for your next stallion-based trivia night.

“What do Stratum, Sebring, Shamus Award, Capitalist and Dundeel all have?” he asks.

The answer is Kaoru Star’s most famous son Luskin Star close up in their female line. He’s the damsire of Stratum (Redoute’s Choice), the second damsire of Sebring (More Than Ready) and Shamus Award (Snitzel), Capitalist’s third damsire, and the sire of Dundeel’s (High Chaparral) second damsire.

“Star Kingdom sirelines might have died out, but most of the good sires have him in their pedigrees," Alford said, adding Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Written Tycoon, I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) to that list, to name a few.

After Alpha Sofie was born, Alford sent Sofie’s Gold Class to another Newgate stallion he’d part-owned in Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice), again effecting a 7f x 7f duplication of Best In Show. The resultant colt, Hidden Tiger, is a two-year-old in training with New Zealand’s Lisa Latta.

Sofie’s Gold Class then had a filly by Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) who Alford hopes to sell at next year’s Inglis Easter sale.

Rich Hill Stud’s Japanese shuttler Satono Aladdin, incidentally, is building a stunning - and somewhat bizarre - record. In New Zealand he has eight stakes winners from 68 runners at 11.7 per cent. In Australia, it's four from 28 at 14.2 per cent. In his home country of Japan it’s nought from 269 - at zero per cent.

Back in the Hunter Valley, Sofie’s Gold Class missed to Capitalist last year, but will return to that stallion this spring.
