Vein Girl’s all-female ownership syndicate are already tickled pink with their filly by Blue Point (Shamardal), and the $60,000 bargain buy will now bid to deliver a first stakes success in Melbourne for her trainers Chris and Corey Munce in Saturday’s Cap d’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m).

Despite some colder mornings than she has been accustomed to in Brisbane, Vein Girl has settled in well at Gai Waterhouse’s Flemington stables alongside travelling companion Payline (Shooting To Win), who will to the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley on September 26 after his fast-finishing fifth in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

What's On

Having been born and raised at the Liston family’s Three Bridges Stud near Bendigo, Vein Girl’s return to Melbourne marks something of a homecoming for the filly, who burst onto the scene with a searing win in the $250,000 Magic Millions Debut (1000m) at the Gold Coast last December.

A valiant fifth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) netted connections a cheque for $175,000 – including a very handy $100,000 Racing Women’s bonus – to provide her large ownership group with an already healthy return on their original investment from just two career starts.

The syndicate was put together by Munce Racing’s sales and client liaison manager Paula Newnham, whose brother Mark is enjoying a successful training stint in Hong Kong after relocating from Sydney.

Newnham and a large contingent of her fellow owners have made the trip south for Vein Girl’s Melbourne debut, with Munce Snr quipping that he may require earplugs should their girl down a deep field of fillies in the $175,000 contest.

Munce, who has trained a total of 23 stakes winners including five in partnership with his son, arrived in Melbourne on Friday afternoon to oversee Vein Girl’s final preparations.

I think if she handles the straight she’ll run really well, but there’s always that query in the back of your mind when they haven’t seen a straight track before. I have no concerns over her ability or fitness, she’s a very tractable filly and for Craig to take the ride after he galloped her is also a big vote of confidence

Chris Munce

The Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey revealed his main query was how she might handle the straight track, which in the past has undone many a good sprinter including Vein Girl’s granddam Victory Vein (Mr Henrysee), who won nine stakes races but finished down the field in the 2004 Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at her only Flemington start.

However, a suitably slick trial at Doomben at the end of July and an abundance of spring options for fillies persuaded Team Munce to embark on their Melbourne mission, with Craig Williams keen to stick with Vein Girl after partnering her in a recent gallop.

“It’s obviously her first trip away from home but she’s taken everything in her stride so far,” Munce Snr told ANZ News.

“She came back in really well and trialled nicely, so we wanted to give her the opportunity to run in some of the better races down in Melbourne and hopefully get some black type on her page. I didn’t expect the field to come up as strong as it has to be perfectly honest, but at least we’ll get a good guide on where she sits in the pecking order.

“I think if she handles the straight she’ll run really well, but there’s always that query in the back of your mind when they haven’t seen a straight track before. I have no concerns over her ability or fitness, she’s a very tractable filly and for Craig to take the ride after he galloped her is also a big vote of confidence.

“We’ll know much more after Saturday but I would imagine she’ll only have two or three runs maximum in Melbourne, then we’ll bring her back to Brisbane for the summer carnival and target the Magic Millions [3YO Classic]. So we wouldn’t want to do anything to jeopardise that, but obviously it would be fantastic for me and the whole team if we could knock off a feature race in Melbourne this campaign.”

Given that Blue Point’s yearlings fetched up to $500,000 on the Gold Coast last year, Munce was understandably delighted to acquire Vein Girl for a fraction of that fee.

A minor issue with her stifle may have deterred some potential bidders, but Munce and his trusted bloodstock agent Arthur Hoyeau were prepared to take a chance on the filly, whose sister Blue Hawaiian has registered one win and five runner-up finishes from her six starts for Peter Moody and Kath Coleman.

Blue Point, who had his service fee increased to €100,000 (approx. AU$176,350) by Darley for the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season having sired 21 stakes winners worldwide, won’t be returning to Australian shores for the upcoming breeding season so future options to purchase his progeny may be limited.

With that in mind, Munce may be closely monitoring his juvenile colt (Lot 88) offered by Queensland-based Tennyson Park at next month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses In Training Sale.

“This filly is the only Blue Point we have in the stables, so we’ve got a pretty good track record with the stallion so far,” said Munce.

“Her X-rays might have put a few people off at the sales, but it was only a minor issue so me and Arthur were happy to take a bit of a chance, and I’m very glad that we did because it hasn’t stopped her from running very fast.

“I’d love to have a few more Blue Points in the barn, especially if they look like her. We’d probably be priced out of the market these days, but she’s shown that they don’t always have to come with a big price tag to perform very well on the racetrack.”

At just $120,000, Payline is yet another example of the shrewd shopping undertaken by Munce and Hoyeau.

The consistent sprinter kicked off the calendar year in the best possible fashion by winning the Magic Millions Syndicate (1100m), giving the stable a second success in the $1 million contest following victory in 2023 for Centrefire, who like Payline was also sired by Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor).

Team Munce first formulated the plan to launch a spring assault in Melbourne after Payline peeled off some sizzling sectionals to grab third behind Sunshine In Paris (Invader) in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m).

After his intended run in the Manikato Stakes, Munce revealed that the five-year-old is likely to be set for a tilt at the VRC Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) on the final day of the famous Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“Payline ran a terrific race in the Moir,” said Munce, who also revealed that his Group 1-winning colt Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) would be targeted at the Magic Millions Guineas (RL, 1400m) this summer, before heading to Sydney in the autumn.

“It proved to us that he has the ability to measure up against some of the better sprinters in the land. We’ll probably run him in the Manikato but if the field comes up particularly strong, we may look at the Gilgai the following week instead.

Payline (Credit: Racing Photos)

“Either way, his main aim will be the Darley Sprint on the final day of the Flemington carnival. It’s always an incredibly strong race and I’m sure this year will be no different, but I do think he’ll enjoy racing down the straight. He really likes sitting back off a hot speed and if he got the right run through, I could definitely see him hitting the line strongly and finishing in the top three or four.

“It’s great for the stable to have two horses we think can be competitive in some of the better races during the spring carnival. Queensland has come a long way but the racing down here in Melbourne is on another level, so hopefully we can have a bit of luck and the owners can enjoy a great day out.”

Mark Twain set for Makybe challenge

Mark Twain (Credit: Sportpix)

Mark Twain (Shocking) is set to contest Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington, where he faces five rivals who are all proven at the elite level. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained stayer scored a Flemington victory in last year’s Roy Higgins (Listed, 2600m), earning him a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) ballot exemption but a tendon injury prevented him from starting. The OTI Racing-owned gelding resumed in New Zealand over 1200 metres on August 9, his first run since the Roy Higgins win, before making his way to Australia. He was due to contest the So You Think Stakes (1500m) at Moonee Valley last Saturday but was withdrawn after dislodging jockey Jamie Mott pre race. “He dropped me on the way to the barriers,” Mott said. “Unfortunately, I had to let him go because he was about to stand all over the top of me and he had a bit of a canter around for a couple of laps. There are only six runners on Saturday so, instead of a gallop, he’ll get more out of a race, but he’s probably not up to winning that race.” Mott had hoped to gain race-day experience on Mark Twain, with the prospect of continuing the partnership as the gelding steps up in trip. “I was literally on him for four seconds the other day, so I didn’t get to have much of a feel of him but he’s a nice horse and we’ll see what he can do on Saturday,” Mott said. “If he can get a bit more weight in those big races, he’s one I’d like to ride. Hopefully he won’t get run off his legs on Saturday and then I think the plan is to back him up in the Naturalism [at Caulfield] the week after. Roger is a great trainer, and he really likes the horse, so hopefully he’s got him on track. We need to get a win to get his rating up to get my weight.”

Mormona chasing Cup start

French import Mormona (Morandi) will chase a ballot exemption for the Melbourne Cup when he lines up in the Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on Saturday. The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained gelding will be second-up off a freshen up on Saturday, after he produced an eye-catching performance to finish third at Caulfield on August 30. Imported in 2024, Mormona has had 12 starts in Australia for one win, which came two starts ago in the Deane Lester Flemington Cup (2800m). Rob Archibald believes the gelding is an out-and-out stayer and second-up up off a short break over 2500 metres will not pose a problem. "Obviously from a timing point of view it's a little bit tricky as he'd been up a little while before winning at Flemington, so we knew that we had to give him a little bit of a freshen if we were going to get through to the spring," he said. "So, he had a bit of a let-up, spent a bit of time at the beach and now we're working our way back. He is a natural stayer, and he's come through the last run well. I thought he was excellent, and we couldn't have asked for anything more. He was back, and a bit wide, and we thought he closed off well in the circumstances. He's won a couple of times over 3000 metres so the further he goes, the better for him. It's just a matter of making sure he's conditioned and can cope with that distance when he gets to it. His first-up run was a tick and hopefully he keeps progressing."

General Salute to find another gear

Gerald Ryan is hoping General Salute (Russian Revolution) can find another gear when he contests Saturday’s Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill. The five-year-old finished third last-start on a Heavy 10 surface in the Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick and this weekend he drops to 53.5 kilograms and will look to relish the expected wet conditions again. "He's got to go up another level," Ryan, who trains in partnership with Sterling Alexiou, said. "But he's got no weight on his back and that's why we've aimed him at this race. The barrier [nine] is ok for him, home track, 1300 metres which I think he's looking for and he enjoys a bit of moisture in the ground. A lot of things point to him, it's just whether he's good enough to beat some of those horses."

Autumn Boy puts unbeaten record on line

Unbeaten colt Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) will bid to make a winning return to action on Saturday when he contests the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill. The Chris Waller-trained son of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) has been off since landing the Tattersall's Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 28, a win that followed a maiden success over 1250 metres, and will be partnered by Jason Collett this weekend after having ridden on debut and again in his most recent trial. “It wasn’t until I got on him I thought he might be pretty good, when I was going to the start I got a good feel but what he produced in the race I was very impressed with,’’ Collett told Racing NSW. “I really wanted to stick with him up in Queensland but obviously James [McDonald] rode him that day, I’m glad to be on him again. He’s much the same as when I won on him. I galloped him again on Tuesday, he is what he is – a very nice horse. I think he’s very smart, he could be very good.”

Update provided on Prebble

Tom Prebble’s parents Brett Prebble and Maree Payne provided an update on their son’s condition on Friday morning following his race fall at Warrnambool on Tuesday. “First, on Tom’s behalf, we want to express our appreciation to the Racing Victoria race day medical team who attended Tom within seconds of the fall,” they said in a statement. “We also want to thank the Ambulance Victoria crews who responded so quickly and professionally to the incident. The fall has resulted in Tom dealing with extensive injuries. His recovery and rehabilitation will extend over a very long time. Tom had major surgery to his spine on Tuesday night after trauma to T5 was identified. The surgery to stabilise his spine was successful and his doctors now advise he is on the road to recovery while the full extent of his injuries remains unclear. While we would like to provide more information to everyone at this time, the fact is the expert medical professionals treating Tom are not able to say what his outcome will be. We understand and sincerely appreciate the level of concern being expressed for Tom. We are grateful he is such a popular, respected and much-loved member of the Victorian jockey ranks after only entering our sport three years ago. We are indebted to the air transportation wing of Ambulance Victoria, who were responsible for transporting Tom from Warrnambool Racecourse to The Alfred Hospital with such professionalism, care and compassion. We want to thank The Alfred Hospital Emergency Department, every person in the surgical team and the incredible people in the Intensive Care Unit where Tom remains today. Words cannot possibly express Tom’s and our appreciation for your kindness, care, professionalism and support. From here on, we would ask that Tom’s and our privacy be respected. With Tom’s approval, we will provide updates on a regular basis through Racing Victoria and the Victorian Jockeys Association as his recovery progresses. Lastly, as Tom’s parents, we would like to express our thanks to Matt Hyland from the VJA, Lisa Stevens from VJA/RV Jockey Assistance Program, RV’s chief medical officer Dr Ben Barresi and all at RV for their unwavering support from the moment of his injury and we thank you all once again for your care and concern.”

Lovatsville extends ATA partnership with stallion nomination bonuses

Victorian stallion farm Lovatsville has renewed its partnership with the Australian Trainers’ Association (ATA), providing stallion nominations as bonuses for select regional races across Victoria this spring. Winning trainers of those races, who must be current ATA members, will receive nominations to Lovatsville’s 2025 roster, with the option of using them on their own mares or within their client base. Lovatsville founder Sam White said: “It is a challenging time for all businesses, in all industries, with the rise in costs leaving their mark. We hope that our support of the trainers, who are often at the coalface of expense in caring for the horse, helps ease the financial pressures that we know a number of them are facing.” ATA chief executive Stephen Bell welcomed the extension of the partnership, which last year saw winners including Malua Racing, Matt Cumani and Archie Alexander. “This announcement continues the great strides we are making on behalf of our members, rewarding them for the contribution to the industry. They now have the opportunity to compete for a ‘bonus’ $170,000 through these nominations, on top of the already fantastic prize-money available in Victoria,” he said. Racing Victoria CEO Aaron Morrison also praised the initiative, saying: “We commend Sam White and the team at Lovatsville for their positive initiative in conjunction with the ATA which further rewards those competing here in Victoria. It’s great to see the intersection between our racing and breeding sectors, both of which are going from strength to strength.” Lovatsville, based at Seymour Park in Victoria, will offer nominations to its five-strong roster. Armidale races abandoned

The Armidale race meeting scheduled for Saturday has been abandoned. The course has been deemed unsuitable for racing following recent wet weather with an area of concern around the 1100-metre to 1250-metre section of the track.

Canterbury Belle to decide path for Intention

Intention (Credit: Race Images)

Awapuni trainer Mike Breslin will wait to see how his talented filly Intention (Bivouac) performs in Saturday’s Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccaton before he plans her spring targets. Breslin is happy with the daughter of Bivouac’s (Exceed and Excel) condition and her progress since her unplaced first-up run last month. “She’s in really good order and she’s trained on nicely since Taupo, the set weights and penalties there meant she had 58.5 kilograms on a very wet track,” he said. “She’s not a big filly so I was more than happy with her run and on Saturday she’ll get back on to a reasonable surface at set weights.” Intention showed much talent during her juvenile preparation, winning the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m), finishing third in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and fifth in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), although she didn’t help her cause with persistent slow beginnings. “Jonathan Riddell has since ridden in her in two trials and we think we’ve ironed that out. The other day at Taupo when she jumped out, I thought she had missed the start again, but she had copped a decent bump,” Breslin said. “She does have to be more professional out of the gates to measure up against what does look to be a boom crop of three-year-old fillies. I would just love her to begin well and put herself in the first six without doing any work and then we’ll see how good she is. She’s very straight forward at home and the barrier issues came as a total surprise and got compounded as things went on as a two-year-old.”

NZ Cup ambitions for Court Of Appeal

Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson are mapping out a path towards November’s New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) with Court Of Appeal (Eminent) following her victory in a Rating 75 (1600m) at Riccarton’s synthetic meeting on Thursday. The five-year-old mare jumped well from her outside gate to lead, and after opening a margin on the field, went on to score a convincing two-length win over San Marco (Ace High). “It was a really good win and a lovely ride of Bruno’s,” Walker said. “She’s been a bit tardy out of the gates lately, but he’s a great barrier rider and got her away cleanly to lead and it was great to see her win the way she did. Hunter [Durrant, assistant trainer] and the team have got the horses looking well in our stables down there at Riccarton, and getting good results for us in the South Island. She was always going to take time to mature, on pedigree, and that will hopefully keep coming to the fore this year and next. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing what she can achieve this season. I think she put a stake in the ground today by winning fresh-up over a mile when she’s a genuine staying type. She’s really blossomed down in the South Island, and I think it’s the right place for her at present. She seems to appreciate the more relaxed setting at Riccarton. Her main targets will be the Metropolitan and New Zealand Cup down there in November.”

Harrison hoping third time’s a charm with King Khan

King Khan (Mongolian Khan) will contest the Road To The Jericho (BM75, 3210m) at New Plymouth on Saturday for the third time, looking for a first win in the race. Trained by Ken Harrison, the eight-year-old placed in the 2023 edition before running fifth in last year’s postponed running at Waverley. Weather forced the delay of last year’s race, and with New Plymouth’s track rated a Heavy 10 on Friday morning, and more rain forecast, Harrison is hoping they aren’t met by the same fate this year: “Last year was a bit of a disaster, we had to travel two or three times to the [Road To The] Jericho.” King Khan has been in good form, winning one and placing in four of his last six starts. Here he has drawn barrier one and will be ridden by jockey Craig Grylls. The winner of Saturday’s contest gets a ticket to the Jericho Cup (BM90, 4600m) which Harrison is considering for the gelding, should he win here. “November 30 it is usually a drier track over there and he doesn’t handle dry tracks at all. Maybe we can fluke a wet one over there, we will just have to wait and see,” he said.

Ladies Man on target for Group 1s

Ladies Man (Zed) is set to face a challenge in the Stronger Together Handicap (1600m) at Te Rapa on Sunday. With a rating of 110, the eight-year-old gelding is the fourth highest rated horse in the country, and has accordingly been lumbered with 66 kilograms for the run. With the aid of apprentice jockey Ashlee Strawbridge’s four-kilogram claim, his impost has been brought down to 62 kilograms, within half-a-kilogram of multiple Group 1 winner and former New Zealand Horse of the Year Sharp ‘N’ Smart (Redwood), while the remainder of the field will carry 54 kilograms. Trainer Allan Sharrock is hoping this won’t dampen the geldings chances too much for his run in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). “He can’t win with that weight. It is a conditioning run for the Group 1 in a fortnight,” said Sharrock. “With Ashlee’s claim, he gets back to 62 kilograms. She is a hardworking girl that seems to do a good job. I don’t think I have had him as sound as he is at the moment, so we are pretty happy with the way we are tracking." The trainer lines up a quintet of runners at New Plymouth with King Jakkal (King Of Comedy) in the Wash Squad Sprint (990m), Tisse (Belardo) and Indian Gold (Ocean Park) in the Brandlab Handicap (1600m), finishing with Swingit Our Way (Zed) and I Don’t (Savabeel) in the Kiwi Butcher (2000m) and Searton Park Handicap (1400m) respectively.

Debit looking to cash in at Te Rapa

Having placed on her debut in May, 2023, six-year-old mare Debit (Darci Brahma) has been unbeaten in her subsequent four starts, and trainer Peter Lock is getting her back to the races after an almost 11-month break. She will run in the Power Farming – We Keep You Growing (1200m) at Te Rapa on Sunday. She has been running in her fair share of barrier trials, winning her latest heat over 1150 metres at Te Awamutu last month. However, her run on Sunday is causing some concern for Lock. “It is just a shame that it’s later in the day [race six],” he said. “Hopefully the track will hold up a bit better, but if it drops out a little bit you are probably better off a little bit wider. It is an extremely good field of horses fresh-up, but I would be happy if she ran in the first four. Every trial she has got better and better. In her last trial, Courtney [Barnes, jockey] got off her and said she thought she was spot on. She came over on Wednesday morning to Te Aroha and galloped on the course proper and she was very happy with the way she worked. We are pretty happy with the way she is at the moment.”

Prize boost for Sweynesse Stakes

Rotorua’s premier spring sprint has had a prize-money increase with Rotorua Racing Club and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) confirming the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) will now be worth $140,000 on Novara Park Stakes Day, Sunday, October 12. The $40,000 increase reflects the race’s growing profile and importance as a target for New Zealand’s weight-for-age sprinters. Last season, the Sweynesse Stakes attracted three elite-level winners, with first and second placegetters Luberon (Embellish) and Navigator (El Roca) both going on to claim Group 1 placings in the Sistema Railway (1200m) and Telegraph (1200m) respectively. “It’s pleasing to see the Club investing in quality opportunities for our sprinters, and if we continue to attract fields of the calibre we saw last year, there is every chance this race could press for an upgrade in Group status in the coming seasons,” said NZTR senior handicapper Bruce Sherwin. Rotorua Racing Club also announced the introduction of a $2,500 travel bonus for the winner of the Staphanos Classic (1950m), also held on Novara Park Stakes Day, should the horse travel south to compete at Riccarton Park’s New Zealand Cup Carnival in Christchurch.

HK: Crawford hopes Only U can deliver first Hong Kong winner

Brett Crawford (Credit: HKJC)

Brett Crawford believes he can get off the mark in Hong Kong at Sha Tin on Sunday when he prepares his second runner in the city, with champion jockey Zac Purton in the saddle. Top weight Only U (Proisir) represents the South African handler’s sole entry at the meeting in the first section of the Class 5 Hong Tung Handicap (1400m), but Crawford is encouraged by the six-year-old’s solid recent form and the fact that the famously studious Purton thought enough of the horse’s chances to reach out and request the ride. “He’s in great form; he’s come out of a trial well, his work at home has been good,” Crawford said. “Lucky for me, Zac actually phoned a while back for the horse. So he obviously feels that, with the horse dropping into Class 5 – even with top weight – he should be competitive, so it’s always good to have Zac on.” Crawford came within half a length of making a dream start to his Hong Kong career when Speedy Smartie (Satono Aladdin) narrowly went down to You’remyeverything (Holy Roman Emperor) in the opening race of the season, the Class 5 Grassy Hill Handicap (1200m) at Sha Tin last Sunday. “The barrier gate is our hardest challenge, coming from gate 12. But looking at the field, I think the opposition are all drawn pretty much around us,” Crawford said. “I think, on his work, he should run a good race.”

UK: Sweet William secures back-to-back Doncaster Cup wins

Sweet William (Credit: Grossick Racing)

The John and Thady Gosden-trained Sweet William (6 g Sea The Stars - Gale Force by Shirocco) secured victory in Friday’s Doncaster Cup Stakes (Gr 2, 2m) for the second consecutive year as he found plenty under pressure to deny the Sir Mark Prescott-trained three-year-old Pendragon (Camelot). Ridden by Robert Havlin, the six-year-old gelding - who had run second to stablemate Trawlerman (Golden Horn) in the Yorkshire Cup Stakes (Gr 2, 2m 1/2f) on his start prior - hit the front inside the final two furlongs and kept on well to score by three and three-quarter lengths. There was a further two lengths back to the third-placed Hipop De Loire (American Post).

Four for Persian King

Haras d’Etreham stallion Persian King (Kingman) chalked up his fourth individual stakes winner on Friday when the Stephane Wattel-trained Best Secret (3 c ex Private Eye by American Post) scored narrowly in the Prix Turenne (Listed, 2400m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by James Doyle, the progressive three-year-old colt held on from the fast-finishing Gethin (Ghaiyyath) by a head with a further neck back to Sea Scout (Sea The Stars) in third. Bred by Hilary Erculiani, Best Secret was purchased by Chantilly Bloodstock Agency for €35,000 at the 2023 Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale and is owned by Wathnan Racing. A half-brother to five including the Listed-placed winners My Valentine (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Private Romance (Siyouni), he is the ninth foal out of the Listed-winning mare Private Eye (American Post). Persian King stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €25,000 (approx. AU$44,090).

UK: Anthelia lands another big prize in Dick Poole

The Rod Millman-trained Anthelia (2 f Supremacy - All On Red by Red Clubs) collected another big cheque for her connections when getting up late in the day to land the Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Salisbury. Having scored in the National Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown in May and the valuable Super Sprint Stakes (5f) at Newbury in July, the daughter of Supremacy (Mehmas) continued an excellent debut campaign as she overhauled the front-running Orion’s Belt (Starman) inside the closing stages of Friday’s Group 3 to score by three-quarters of a length. IRE: Asfoora to take on 15 rivals in Flying Five Stakes

Last month's Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) winner Asfoora (Flying Artie) will take on 15 rivals in Sunday's Flying Five Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) after declarations came through on Friday. The Henry Dwyer-trained star mare will take on the Aidan O'Brien-trained Whistlejacket (No Nay Never), Amo Racing's Bucanero Fuerte (Wootton Bassett) and Arizona Blaze (Sergei Prokofiev), while British representation is strong in the form of Arthur Mitchell's Mgheera (Zoustar), Night Raider (Dark Angel), Art Power (Dark Angel), Nighteyes (Night Of Thunder) and Vadream (Brazen Beau). The Aristia Park-owned She's Quality (Acclamation), Two Stars (Starspangledbanner), Powerful Nation (Sioux Nation), Grand Marques (Starspangledbanner), Saratoga Special (Mehmas), Erosandpsyche (Sepoy) and Lady With The Lamp (King Of Change) complete the Irish team in the 16-runner field.

IRE: National Stakes attracts strong six-runner field

The pecking order for Ballydoyle's juvenile colts will become clearer on Sunday as Aidan O'Brien fields three in a stunning renewal of the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f). The Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner and Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) looks to be the trainer's number one hope due to the booking of Christophe Soumillon, but Italy (Wootton Bassett) and Dorset (Wootton Bassett) are no forlorn hopes. It could be that the winner will come from outside of that team, with unbeaten Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) winner Saba Desert (Dubawi) bidding to give Charlie Appleby and William Buick their fourth success in the race and their first since 2021. Fellow British runner Zavateri (Without Parole) is also unbeaten in three starts for Eve Johnson Houghton, having landed the July Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) and Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Glorious Goodwood. The impressive Tyros Stakes (Gr 3, 7.5f) winner North Coast (Starman) completes the six-runner field for Joseph O'Brien.

FR: Best catalogue yet assembled for Arqana's October Sale

A half-brother to Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m) victor Woodshauna (Wooded) is among the yearlings included in the strongest line-up yet for Arqana's October Yearling Sale. The colt by The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman) is one of 14 yearlings either out of Group 1 winners or siblings to winners at the highest level that will be offered on the opening day of the sale - Tuesday, October 21. Woodshauna, a first-crop son of Wooded (Wootton Bassett), was sold to Al Shaqab Racing for €70,000 at the 2023 edition of the sale by Haras de Grandcamp, who consign his half-brother on behalf of Haras de Magouet. The bay is joined in the catalogue by a Churchill (Galileo) three-parts brother to English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) winner Kew Gardens (Galileo) from the Fairway Consignment. Haras de l'Aumenorie offers half-brothers to not one but two Classic winners: a Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) half-brother to 2023 Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) victor and Ballylinch Stud sire Look De Vega (Lope De Vega) and a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt who is a half-brother to Coeursamba (The Wow Signal), successful in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m). Wootton Bassett increased his tally of top-level winners to 16 last Sunday with the success of Sahlan in the Prix du Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m) and La Motteraye consigns a full-sister to another of those; the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Zellie. St Mark's Basilica (Siyouni) sired his first Group winner at Doncaster on Thursday and La Motteraye's draft includes a second-crop half-brother to the Classic and multiple Group 1 winner Laurens (Siyouni). Leading sires including Blue Point (Shamardal), Camelot (Montjeu), Dark Angel (Acclamation), Havana Grey (Havana Gold), Kingman (Invincible Spirit), Lope De Vega (Shamardal) and Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) are all represented in the catalogue. The sale runs from October 21 - 25 inclusive.

US: Coolmore go to the Gun Runner well again

Coolmore continued to put their heft behind Gun Runner (Candy Ride) at Keeneland on Thursday, and MV Magnier, together with Peter Brant's White Birch Farm, signed for the most expensive colt in the fourth session of Keeneland's mammoth September Yearling Sale. The US$1.55 million (approx. AU$2.33 million) bay is the second foal out of Beaumont Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Twenty Carat (Into Mischief) and was bred by Three Chimneys Farm - where Gun Runner stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for US$250,000 (approx. AU$376,510). Four Star Sales consigned the colt whose year-older full-sister impressed in a workout at the Los Alamitos track in southern California last month. Gun Runner ended the first week of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale with the top lot in each of the four sessions and with 36 of his progeny sold for an average of US$932,917 (approx. AU$1.4 million). His 36 yearlings grossed US$33,585,000 (approx. AU$50.57 million) which is the highest total of any sire represented. A total of 717 horses changed hands through Books 1 and 2, grossing US$318,461,500 (approx. AU$479.61 million) which is an increase of 21 per cent from last year's US$262,793,000 from 690 sold through the four sessions. At the conclusion of the first two books the average of US$444,158 (approx. AU$668,910), is up from US$380,859 last year, and the median is at US$350,000 (approx. AU$527,110), after standing at US$300,000 following four sessions in 2024.
