Sepals bidding to make Group 1 breakthrough at Caulfield

Four years after his return to Victoria from Singapore, trainer Cliff Brown is hopeful progressive four-year-old Sepals (Calyx) can land a major breakthrough for his boutique stable when he steps up to top-level company in Saturday’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

Sepals will be having only his seventh start in Caulfield’s $1 million handicap - returned to its traditional timeslot this season after two November runnings - but such has been his progress, he’s a $5 equal-second favourite.

In a market headed by relative newcomers with light weights, exciting Yulong acquisition Angel Capital (Harry Angel) was a $3.50 favourite as he seeks his sixth win from nine starts.

And at $8 among the nominations are proven top-tier winner Another Wil (Street Boss), who was runner-up in this race last year, and New Zealand mare Damask Rose (Savabeel).

Brown bought Sepals for $80,000 at Inglis Classic in 2023, partly led by having trained his dam What’s New (Casino Prince) to two stakes wins in Singapore, and the gelding hasn’t disappointed.

In the space of three runs at the start of this year, he claimed a Sale maiden at start number two, became a city winner at Sandown and a black-type winner at Flemington, by taking the CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at $7.50.

Feroce (Super Seth) ran third that day before turning the tables two weeks later by winning the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) while Sepals ran fourth as a $3.70 favourite.

After a spell, Sepals’ intended resumption - and rise to weight-for-age black type grade - was scuppered at the last second when he was scratched at the barrier before Caulfield’s PB Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

But that proved only a delay, rather than a major setback, as two weeks later the gelding returned to top form by winning in Benchmark 100 grade, again over the Rupert Clarke course of 1400 metres at Caulfield, as a solidly backed favourite. Jumping from an awkward gate nine of 14 from that start, Sepals strode up to race outside the leader’s rump, and exploded at the 200 metres to score by 4.3 lengths.

What's On

Brown is under no illusions as to the toughness of this Saturday’s test, but at least Sepals has two major elements in his favour - a light weight of 52 kilograms and the country’s best lightweight rider in Craig Williams, who wins Rupert Clarkes for fun.

Williams is the most successful jockey in the race’s history, winning it seven times among its past 20 editions, including last year on Kimochi (Brave Smash).

As he seeks an elusive first Group 1 since his return from Singapore, Brown is confident Sepals will at least put his best foot forward over what appears to be his favourite trip.

“So far so good,” Brown told ANZ News.

“He’s always been a nice horse, and he just keeps progressing. He’s now won four from six, so he’s done a good job.

“But it’s going to be a great field, so he’s got to keep improving. Whether he’s good enough, we don’t know. Angel Capital was very impressive the other day, and there’s some other nice horses in there.

“It’s a big step up for my horse, but it’s also the right race. It’s a handicap, so he’ll have some weight relief. But Angel Capital is down in the weights as well [53.5 kilograms], so it’ll be interesting.

“But we’re hoping like mad. Hopefully we’re competitive.”

Mornington-based Brown had good cause to pursue Sepals at Inglis Classic. The horse was bred by his old friend and client Greg Perry, as the first foal of a mare the trainer knew well.

Brown prepared What’s New to become Singapore’s Champion 4YO and Older Female in 2019. A winner of six races from 22 starts, she claimed two Singapore Listed contests in the first two legs of the city-state’s four-year-old Triple Crown - the Silver Bowl (1400m) and Stewards’ Cup (1600m). She then started favourite in the third leg, the Singapore Derby (Listed, 1800m) but on an unsuitable wet track could manage only fourth.

“She was a good racemare,” Brown said. “She wasn’t very big but she had a great attitude, and was a lovely horse to deal with. I’d say if she was back in Australia, she’d have probably been about the level of a Listed winner.

“Greg Perry bred Sepals, and I’ve trained for Greg for a long time. And at the yearling sale, the horse just appealed to me as a good bodied horse who was a great, fluent mover. But what really struck me was his great attitude - just like his mother.”

Sepals also has depth going back to his fourth dam Good Faith (Straight Strike), winner of Ellerslie’s Sires’ Produce Stakes - now the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), the top filly on the 1996-97 Australasian 2YO Classification, and dam of two stakes winners.

Perry now has a yearling half-brother to Sepals by Star Turn (Star Witness), but What’s New lost her colt by Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) after birth last month.

As for Sepals’ sire, the ill-fated Calyx (Kingman), Brown might have struck at the right time.

A winner at Group 2 and Group 3 level from just four starts, Calyx shuttled to Coolmore Australia twice, attracting 69 mares in 2020 and 55 a year later, at a fee of $13,750 (inc GST).

He was hugely popular in Ireland, however, covering a whopping 273 mares at Coolmore in 2024 - more than any other Flat stallion in Europe.

However, he suffered an acute foot injury in May this year which led to him being euthanised.

Still, his Australian progeny have represented him well enough, with three stakes winners at 7.6 per cent of his 40 runners. That compares to a worldwide figure of nine from 187 at 4.8 per cent.

His gelded son Likeakalix won the Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2100m) and Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) back-to-back in January.

And Calyx has been in form of late, with Irish-bred import Nellie Leylax having become his third Australian stakes winner by taking Randwick’s Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2000m), a week before Sepals’ first-up romp.

Brown achieved much success in his 12 years in Singapore. He was a regular top-five finisher on the trainers’ premiership, the first trainer to win five local Group 1s in a season, and had Singapore’s Horse of the Year twice with Debt Collector (Thorn Park) and The Inferno (Holy Roman Emperor)

Returning to Victoria with Brown in 2021, The Inferno won the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at his second Australian start, and ran an agonising 0.1 length second in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at his next, behind Wild Ruler (Snitzel).

The Inferno would run four more stakes placings before his retirement last year.

Yaphet (Blackfriars) earned Brown another elite second when beaten 1.8 lengths by Jungle Magnate (Tarzino) in the 2022 South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

Brown, who has a team of around 40 runners on his books, also won Flemington’s Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) last year with Von Hauke (Savabeel).

But while his winners have grown in each of his seasons after leaving Singapore - from ten to 20, 25 and 34 - he’s still yet to break through for that elusive Group 1 success since returning home.

Becoming established again has been a necessarily long haul, but Brown is hopeful Sepals can achieve what would be a hugely significant victory for his small stable in the Rupert Clarke.

“It does take a few years to get going again,” he said. “I remember John O’Shea said after he left Godolphin, it really took him five years to get going, and he’s 100 per cent right.

“It feels like I’m slowly getting traction now, but the rest of the time since I’ve been back - God, it felt like torture. You just couldn’t get going.

“So it would be a massive breakthrough if we could claim a Group 1. It’d be good for everyone, so here’s hoping.”

Another Wil on track for Sir Rupert Clarke

Another Wil (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ciaron Maher is pleased with the progress of stable star Another Wil (Street Boss) as he builds towards the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The gelding, who finished runner-up to Kimochi (Brave Smash) in last year’s race, will carry top weight of 59 kilograms in the $1 million handicap, which returns to its traditional September slot after several seasons being staged in November. Another Wil resumed with a sixth to Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on August 30. Maher admitted he had underestimated his level of fitness but was buoyed by a sharp hit-out at Caulfield on Tuesday under Jamie Kah. “His last two pieces of work have been very good,” Maher said. “Jamie knows him very well and she’s been up and about after his last two pieces. She gave a positive report and said, ‘that was more like it’. He travelled up on the bit and looked to have plenty in hand. I thought he’d improve with the run, but he was a little further away than I thought. He strips a bit fitter now and he’s got a good record at the 1400 metres at the track.” Another Wil broke through at Group 1 level in winning the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield in February, although Maher concedes Saturday’s challenge will be stern. Among his rivals is the Chris Waller-trained Angel Capital (Harry Angel), a recent private purchase for Yulong who impressed in a solo gallop on Tuesday. “He’s got a bit of weight, and it was good to see [Angel Capital] have a bowl around and it looked pretty good as well,” Maher said. “It’ll be a good race, but he’ll improve, which he needs to. I’m confident he’s where we want him going into Saturday.”

Fermoy set to test Guineas credentials in Prelude

Chris Waller will roll the dice on Fermoy (Zoustar) in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m), convinced the colt has made progress despite being winless in five starts. The $1.9 million Inglis Easter yearling was runner-up in the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) at Rosehill last month and now gets his chance to prove himself left-handed ahead of a possible tilt at the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). “It was good work,” Waller told Racing.com after watching the colt gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday. “He was Group-placed last start, although he’s still a maiden he’s the right horse to bring down for the Guineas Prelude and hopefully onto the Guineas from there. Like Zoustar himself, he’s matured a lot as a three-year-old. His two runs back this prep have both been very good. He’s improved and he’s just starting to find himself.” Waller, who has previously won the Guineas with Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) (2015), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) (2018) and Private Life (Written Tycoon) (2024), looks set to have a strong hand in this year’s renewal, with Ming Dynasty (Gr 3, 1400m) quinella Sixties (Flying Artie) and Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) and Estremo (Extreme Choice) also under consideration. Estremo joins Fermoy in the Prelude, with Waller confident the step up to 1400 metres will suit.

Flight Stakes the primary aim for Oaks favourite

Gary Portelli is keeping his focus close to home with promising filly Queen Of Clubs (Maurice), who is favourite in early betting for the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) but will first be aimed at the Sydney spring features. A Rosehill winner over 1400 metres in June, Queen Of Clubs resumed in last month's Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and stuck on well for third on heavy ground. She trialled again last week, finishing strongly into fourth over 1030 metres under Nash Rawiller, leaving her trainer encouraged ahead of her next outing in the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. “I loved the way she was strong through the line late,” Portelli told Racing.com of the trial. “Nash was a bit concerned coming to the corner, but when he asked her to accelerate he said he had plenty of horse. She showed a good turn of foot.” The Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on October 4 is Queen Of Clubs’ primary spring target, with the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield also an option. The Oaks remains a possibility given her pedigree and racing style. “The fact that she’s favourite [for the Oaks] suggests we should be looking at it,” Portelli said. “She’s by Maurice, he’s already produced a Derby winner in Hitotsu, and the way she can switch off is a big asset. But our aim is the Flight Stakes and then maybe the Thousand Guineas, depending on how far we think she’s going to get.”

Via Sistina and Al Riffa handed Cup topweights

Via Sistina (Credit: Racing Photos)

Yulong’s champion mare Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Sunday’s Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) hero Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) will share topweight of 59 kilograms for the $10 million Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), with Racing Victoria’s (RV) new Group 1 handicapping policy having an immediate impact on this year’s weights.

The rule, announced in April, raised the minimum Cup topweight from 58kgs to 59kgs and lifted the floor for older horses from 50kgs to 51kgs. As neither Via Sistina nor Al Riffa are among the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) entries, the weights for that race have been raised by 2kgs to comply, leaving Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) and Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) to carry 59kgs.

Releasing the handicaps on Tuesday, RV chief handicapper David Hegan said the Melbourne Cup scale had been a straightforward assignment. “Via Sistina’s Cox Plate win remains the highest-rated performance of any horse entered, although the two miles is an unknown. Al Riffa confirmed his stamina with his Leger win and has Group 1 victories from 1400 to 2800 metres,” he explained.

Among other notable allocations, the weekend’s English St Leger winner Scandinavia (Justify) has 55.5kg, which is one kilogram below the weight-for-age scale and slightly higher than 2024 Leger victor Jan Brueghel (Galileo). Last year’s Cup winner Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice) rises from 51.5kgs to 55kgs, effectively an increase of 2.5kgs under the new structure, while Japanese stayer Chevalier Rose (Deep Impact) was also set 55.5kgs.

Ballot-exempt entries include Revelare (So You Think) (51.5kg), Basilinna (Staphanos) (51kg), Deakin (Australia) (52kg) and US raider Parchment Party (Constitution) (52kg).

Hegan stressed that final weights could still be lifted to meet the requirement of a minimum 57kgs topweight at declaration time, but said the headline figures reflected the quality of both Via Sistina and Al Riffa.

Hegan wary of wildcard Meydaan

While RV chief handicapper David Hegan is content with the balance of this year’s Melbourne Cup weights, he admits the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Meydaan (Frankel) defies easy assessment. The son of Frankel (Galileo) was allotted 54 kilograms in the Melbourne Cup and 56kg in the Caulfield Cup, but Hegan acknowledged his profile made the job difficult. “He comes with a high-performance rating but he doesn’t have the wins to back it up,” Hegan said. “He is probably similar in profile to the stablemate West Wind Blows, who came out here and was given 54kgs in the Caulfield Cup and was narrowly beaten by Without A Fight. The difference was West Wind Blows had dual Group 3 wins and a Listed win. Meydaan comes with a similar rating but from running seconds and thirds in Listed and Group 3 races. The traditional Australian way of handicapping is to put more emphasis on wins rather than placings. So, there is a very slight discount there for Meydaan and his highest performance run comes off the synthetic surface last start, so whether he can reproduce that on the turf here we’ll have to find out. But he is definitely one who could improve his rating and race beyond expectation.” The form of Meydaan’s last-start third on Kempton’s all-weather track stands up strongly, with winner Giavellotto (Mastercraftsman) a winner of the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) last December, while runner-up Kalpana (Study Of Man) is currently on target for next month’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1, 2400m).

McDonald eyes Flemington straight for Rosberg

Clinton McDonald is pushing to give exciting colt Rosberg (Deep Field) a look at the famous Flemington straight before his spring assignments ramp up. The unbeaten three-year-old lived up to a weight of expectation with a dominant debut victory in the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at The Valley earlier this month, a performance that has seen him rocket into Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favouritism. McDonald revealed on Tuesday that Rosberg is being aimed at the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on October 4 before the $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day, but wants the VRC to grant an exemption for the colt to trial at headquarters next week. “He’ll go to the Danehill Stakes and then straight to the Coolmore,” McDonald told Racing.com after watching Rosberg work at Caulfield. “We’re trying to get him to have a jump-out at Flemington next week. Hopefully the VRC come to the party. It’d be nice to be able to trial these horses down the straight, so they can see it before going there on the unknown. At the end of the day, we talk about the horse and the punter and that’s the most important thing. If the punters can see him trial down the straight, it gives them confidence to back him.” McDonald said Rosberg had thrived since his debut success. “He’s only going to keep learning,” the trainer added. “We’re trying to speed up a process, because he’s going to be a bit behind in race starts compared with the opposition. But just seeing his mannerisms this week, he’s getting that little bit of arrogance about him. I think you’ll see a really good one when he steps out at Flemington.”

Prebble provides update one week after Warrnambool fall

Apprentice jockey Tom Prebble has provided an update on his condition a week on from his serious fall at Warrnambool. Prebble, who was transferred on Monday from The Alfred Hospital’s ICU to the Austin Hospital’s ICU, revealed he currently has no feeling or movement from his ribcage down as a result of a spinal cord injury. In a detailed statement, the 22-year-old expressed gratitude to the surgeons, doctors and nurses at The Alfred, and said he was hopeful of moving into the spinal care ward later this week before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation program. “My key injury is to my spinal cord. At the moment I’ve got nothing happening from the bottom of my rib cage down through my body… currently no feeling or movement,” Prebble said. “My doctors say it’s now a waiting game over the coming weeks and months to see where things land. The message is very clear: to remain fully optimistic re improvement but also be realistic and that there are a full range of possible outcomes from this injury.” Prebble also outlined his other injuries, including a fractured spine at T5, which required surgery, a fractured neck that will require a brace for up to three months, rib fractures, minor lung issues and dental damage. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his recovery, Prebble emphasised optimism while acknowledging the challenges ahead. The young rider also paid tribute to his family and the industry for their overwhelming support. “Lastly, I’m blessed to have two of the best parents and sister anyone could wish for and they’ve got me through this first week. That thanks goes out to everyone who has expressed their best wishes and concerns for me. It means the world to know so many people are behind me in my recovery.”

Cambridge Stud welcomes HK opportunity

Cambridge Stud’s iconic gold and black silks will be seen in Hong Kong for the first time this season after principals Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay were granted an ownership permit by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Their representative will be Group 1-placed colt Red Sea (Pierata), to be trained by fellow New Zealander Jamie Richards. “This was an opportunity not to be missed,” said Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre. “Hong Kong is a very important market for New Zealand, well represented at both the Ready to Run and National Yearling Sales, so to have the chance to race there under our own banner is significant.” A homebred, Red Sea won as a juvenile for Andrew Forsman and was runner-up in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). He later raced in Melbourne, where a rib fracture came to light after two below-par runs. Following a lengthy recovery, he trialled impressively at Taupo last month under regular rider Warren Kennedy. “He ticks a lot of boxes for Hong Kong,” Plumptre said. “He’s four now and will go into Class 3. His form in New Zealand suggests he can hold his own, and Warren and Jamie have been delighted with how he’s come through his work.” Richards, who trained Probabeel (Savabeel) and other high-class fillies for Cambridge Stud during his time in New Zealand, will oversee the colt’s Hong Kong campaign. Red Sea is expected to debut around the New Year once acclimatised.

Gossip hunting mega riches at Taupo

Gossip (Inside) (Credit: Race Images)

Danica Guy will chase a lucrative bonus with promising mare Gossip (Proisir) when she resumes in the NZB Mega Maiden Series (1200m) at Taupo on Wednesday. The NZB Mega Maiden Series offers Karaka Millions eligible horses the chance to share in an additional $1 million bonus pool across 40 non-Saturday maiden races. As a graduate of Fairdale Stud’s 2023 Gavelhouse Plus National Online Yearling Sale, Gossip is eligible to secure $20,000 for owner Gary Harding and $5,000 for her trainer if successful. A $110,000 purchase by Harding, Gossip has yet to miss the frame in three starts and has been readied with an Avondale trial second earlier this month. “She’s coming up really well,” Guy said. “She’s had a long break, but she’s strengthened, and her trial showed she’s forward enough. She’s a lovely filly and hopefully she runs well.” Guy, who expects an exciting preparation ahead for Gossip, will saddle a strong team at Taupo, including debutants Licorice (Maurice) in the Fox & Hounds (1300m) and Snipers Shot (Fierce Impact) in the Prezzy Card Northern Country Cups Series (1300m). “Licorice is a beautiful, well-bred filly,” Guy said. “She’ll improve for the outing but looks one for further three-year-old targets. Snipers Shot is a nice stayer in the making and wants good ground. He’ll be better over more distance.”

Well-bred gelding set to shine on debut

Well-bred three-year-old Kygo Star (Wootton Bassett) will take the first step of his career in the Fox & Hounds Taupo (1300m) on Wednesday, with trainer Chad Ormsby confident the gelding can furnish into a smart autumn prospect. By Coolmore’s in-demand stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) and out of the Group 1-placed Star Karen (Camelot), Kygo Star boasts the pedigree to match his trainer’s early impressions. He was withdrawn from his intended debut at Matamata last Friday due to deteriorating ground, with Ormsby preferring to save him for a sounder surface. “He was due to run last week but it was too wet at Matamata,” Ormsby said. “Hopefully we might have a nice, long campaign in front of him, and we didn’t want to put a gut-buster in first-up. It’s a nice option at Taupo and I expect to know a little bit more about him. We think he’ll get over ground and he’ll be a better autumn three-year-old. He’s a little slow-maturing, but he’s started to put his hand up.” Stablemate Dalmatian Coast (Ace High), a half-brother to Group 1 performer Antrim Coast (Roc De Cambes), holds an entry for the NZB Mega Maiden Series (1200m) at the same meeting but is likely to be saved for Ellerslie on Saturday after drawing poorly. “We’ve drawn pretty average tomorrow, so we’re most likely to wait for Ellerslie,” Ormsby said. “We don’t want to give him a gut-buster first-up either.”

Jumbo Legend seeks more Valley success

Vincent Ho is relishing being back in competition and is hopeful last-start winner Jumbo Legend (Hitchinbook) can extend his strong form when he resumes in Wednesday’s HK$3.12 million Class 2 Shek O Handicap (1650m) for trainer Caspar Fownes at Happy Valley. Ho has returned to the saddle after months of rehabilitation from neck fractures and a head injury sustained in a fall last February. Now clear in both health and mind, the rider has already landed a win this term and is eager to rebuild momentum. “I’m enjoying it and I am happy with myself. I just have to get on some good horses and the results will come,” Ho said. “When people were saying ‘come back stronger’, well that’s what I am – there’s no doubt about that.” Jumbo Legend, a seven-time Happy Valley winner and four-time victor last season, will jump from gate four in Wednesday’s feature. “I know the horse well – he always performs. Hopefully, he does the same as last season. He’s an honest, decent horse,” Ho said.

15 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) sired his 15th individual winner when Port Of Spain (2 c ex Alive Oh Alive by Duke Of Marmalade) got off the mark at Punchestown on Tuesday. The Aidan’O’Brien-trained two-year-old had run twice previously, both at the Curragh, and stayed on strongly to make it third time lucky under Ronan Whelan. A half-brother to multiple Group scorer Free Wind (Galileo), the colt is out of the stakes-winning Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) mare Alive Alive Oh, a half-sister to Japanese Grade 3 scorer Crescendo Love (Stay Gold). Port Of Spain was bred by Sue Ann Foley.
St Mark’s Basilica’s first crop of northern-hemisphere-bred two-year-olds are headed by May Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) scorer Aylin, Ingabelle Stakes (Listed, 7f) scorer Diamond Necklace and Tipperary Listed (7.5f) winner Thesecretadversary. St Mark’s Basilica is standing at Coolmore Australia for an unchanged fee of $38,500.

UK: Fellowes considering Hong Kong for Golden Eagle-bound stable star

The Charlie Fellowes-trained Luther (Frankel) will not run again in Britain before his tilt at the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on November 1. The son of Frankel (Galileo) was fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and third in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 9f) earlier in the season, but got back to winning ways when promoted to first last time in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Saratoga. He will now head to quarantine before his first run in Australia. Fellowes said: "We ummed and ahhed about running him in Britain and thought about the City of York Stakes, but he hadn't been back that long and it would have been a big ask. We also considered last week's Park Stakes at Doncaster, but he doesn't need a prep run. He's not a big, fat, heavy horse and has always been generous in his work at home. I can freshen him up and we can go over to Australia as fit as a fiddle." Fellowes added: "I think he'll love it. He's not slow and I think the seven and a half furlongs around that track in a big field is ideal. He goes into quarantine at the end of this month, does two weeks in quarantine in Newmarket and then does two weeks in quarantine at Canterbury when he gets there. I think they get out of quarantine the day before they're due to race on November 1."

US: Maclean's Music colt $500,000 takes Monday honours at Keeneland

A colt by Maclean’s Music (Distorted Humor) topped the seventh session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Monday when selling to Alex and JoAnn Lieblong for US$500,000 (approx. AU$749,300). The Eaton Sales-consigned colt is out of the stakes-winning Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy) mare Athens Queen and was purchased by the Arkansas-based owners who have raced a number of Grade 1 winners over the years such as dual Sword Dancer Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) scorer Telling (A. P. Indy). "He was a nice horse, and we're fortunate we got him," Alex Lieblong told BloodHorse. "We held back yesterday [Sunday] on another one we liked; we played, but we didn't get silly because this was the one we really wanted." Asked what stood out about the colt, he added: "Just about everything. Of course, his siblings had some success, but I usually buy more on a physical than anything else. And, Bo [Hunt], ran across him, and Bo was about as high on him as anything that we bought." Earlier in the auction, the Lieblongs had spent big on two progeny by Maclean's Music's stallion son Jackie's Warrior with a colt (1187) for $425,000 (approx. AU$636,900) and a filly (758) at $650,000 (approx. AU$974,000). Monday's session saw 279 yearlings going through the ring for US$30,107,000 (approx.AU$45,118,300), up 19 per cent from last year when 288 horses brought US$25,234,000 at the seventh session. The average of US$107,910 (AU$161,700) increased 23 per cent over US$87,618 in 2024. The median rose seven per cent from US$70,000 to US$75,000 (approx. AU$112,400).
