Miss Roumbini ready to rumble in the Rupert Clarke

Michael Kent Jnr believes the stars are aligning for a mare “you’d want to go to war with” as Miss Roumbini (Zoustar) looks to translate her astonishing consistency into Group 1 glory in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

On a day when last-start winner Golden Path (Belardo) also aims for top-level success in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and talented three-year-olds Planet Red (Admire Mars) and Space Rider (Zoustar) bid to stamp their tickets to the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), it is perhaps Miss Roumbini’s Sir Rupert Clarke tilt that has co-trainer Kent Jnr the most enthused as the stable seeks a first victory in the time-honoured handicap contest.

The recent record of mares, who have claimed three of the last four editions of the Sir Rupert Clarke, is another big tick in her favour as is the fact that Miss Roumbini is unbeaten second-up and, with the minimum weight of just 52 kilograms on her back, the five-year-old should glide around Caulfield under Beau Mertens.

A track record of one win and two stakes placings from her four starts at Caulfield also makes for very happy reading for her ownership group, which is led by the family-run Flying Angels syndicate who enjoyed great success with Miss Roumbini’s former stablemate Wee Nessy (Snitzel) before the mare was retired.

Having been involved in the great game since he was old enough to hold a stable broom, Kent Jnr is acutely aware that luck can play a major part in big-field handicap races, especially at Caulfield where hard luck stories are a frequent lament for trainers and punters alike.

His heart would therefore have sunk when she was assigned gate 14 of 16, although the well-fancied pair Sepals (Calyx) and Damask Rose (Savabeel) fared even worse at the barrier draw. However, the man affectionately called “Junior” by senior statesman and training partner Mick Price is adamant that, provided Miss Roumbini can find the gaps at the right time, the $13 chance is well capable of becoming her superstar sire’s first winner of the Sir Rupert Clarke.

What's On

“I thought her run in the Cockram was outstanding,” Kent Jnr told ANZ News.

“She was caught four-wide without cover and looked the winner until the 50-metre mark, when she was gobbled up late by a quality mare who had a much softer run in transit. This has been a target race for her for some time, we think the 1400 metres will be perfect and she’s three from three second-up, so we couldn’t be happier with her.

“She won’t know herself with 52 kilos on her back, so I think the stars are aligning for her to run a really big race on Saturday. As always with these big handicaps you need a bit of luck on your side, but she’s absolutely flying and her consistency is unbelievable.

“She’s just one of those mares you’d want to go to war with, she pins her ears back every time and tries her heart out. We love training her and I think she’s still progressive, even though she’s a five-year-old mare she’s still lightly-raced so I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.”

A $550,000 purchase from the Yulong draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Miss Roumbini’s pair of stakes placings and her residual value as a daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) would already make her a seven-figure commodity as a broodmare prospect.

However, should she bounce out of her mighty effort behind Magic Time (Hellbent) in the Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and go one better in Saturday’s $1 million feature, her worth would inevitably skyrocket.

She was the first foal out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Bleu Roche, who won one stakes race for trainer Matt Laurie before injury curtailed her career and she was subsequently bought by Yulong for $600,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Shrewd shopping isn’t necessarily Yulong’s modus operandi, but their acquisition of Bleu Roche would undoubtedly fall into the canny category. The three foals she has produced so far have fetched a combined $1.335 million at the sales, and her filly by Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) is likely to be in high demand when she is presented to the buying bench next year – particularly if big sister can snag a Group 1 on Saturday.

“Miss Roumbini is a gorgeous Zoustar mare with a lovely pedigree to back it up, so a Group 1 win or even a placing would be absolutely fantastic for her connections,” Kent Jnr told ANZ News.

“If she doesn’t manage to get a Group 1 on Saturday, there are plenty of options for her to add a black-type win to her page during the spring. I’m not sure we’d necessarily look to step her up to the mile, so that would rule out the Toorak Handicap.

“A race like the Alan Brown Stakes in Sydney might appeal, it’s worth a lot of money ($1.5 million) and would potentially be a much more winnable race than a Sir Rupert Clarke. But we’ll get through Saturday then work it out from there.”

The stable will also get a better guide on their top seed for the Caulfield Guineas after Saturday’s Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m), which features exciting colt Space Rider (Zoustar) and Red Planet (Admire Mars).

The latter, who became his Japanese sire’s first winner courtesy of a dynamic debut at Pakenham in May, holds early favouritism at $3.90 after his eye-catching effort behind Clinton McDonald’s dazzling debutant Rosberg (Deep Field) in the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last time.

Having started second favourite, on face value Space Rider’s run in the McKenzie was perhaps a touch plain but after the stable’s vets were unable to detect any post-race abnormalities, the valuable colt’s connections were happy to forgive a rare off-day and press onto the Guineas Prelude.

With the winner set to receive a golden ticket to contest the stallion-making contest at Caulfield on October 11, there is plenty on the line for Space Rider who burst onto the scene as a juvenile at Eagle Farm last December with a 3.2-length defeat of Kelly Schweida’s stakes-placed colt Grafterburners (Graff).

After returning with an impressive city win at his first start as a three-year-old in late-August, much was expected of Space Rider in the McKenzie but Kent Jnr hasn’t lost any faith in his charge, who was a $500,000 purchase in partnership with Tony Fung Investments and bloodstock agent Dermot Farrington.

Kent Jnr’s only real query is whether Space Rider – who will be partnered for the first time by Blake Shinn – has the ability to stretch out to the mile in the Caulfield Guineas, particularly given his stakes-winning brother Brereton has excelled primarily over sprint trips.

However his dam, Longwood Farm’s proven producer Fuddle Dee Duddle (Red Ransom), won the 2017 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) for Lindsey Smith over the Ascot Mile so the step up to 1400 metres for the first time in Space Rider’s career should provide a good guide on whether he has inherited his mum’s aerobic capacity.

“He’s got one of the biggest strides in the stable so we’ve always though Space Rider would love 1400 metres,” said Kent Jnr.

“Physically he looks like he will cope with the trip on Saturday but unlike Planet Red, at this stage I’m not totally convinced he will run out a strong mile. So he’s probably on trial a little bit in the Prelude, but if he were to win or at least be hitting the line strongly then we’d persevere onto the Caulfield Guineas and all being well, Planet Red definitely goes there.

“I know the market is favouring Planet Red on Saturday [Space Rider opened at $6], but that’s purely on their last starts so I would probably find it harder to split them. Planet Red is by a champion miler in Admire Mars and he would probably be just ahead of Space Rider in the pecking order for the Guineas at this stage, but over 1400 metres I would say they’re neck and neck.

“They both worked fantastically on the course proper on Tuesday morning, they finished side by side and their recovery data was nearly identical so I’ll be sitting on the fence for now.”

Golden Path completes the stable’s quartet of Saturday stakes runners when he steps up to the top tier of racing for the first time in an intriguing renewal of the Underwood.

An opening quote of $17 is perhaps reflective of his realistic prospects, with the highly-credentialled trio of Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock), Sir Delius (Frankel) and Moira (Ghostzapper) amongst his chief rivals.

However, having registered the sixth win of his career with a determined display over 1700 metres at Flemington last Saturday, his co-trainer insists the gallant gelding won’t be heading to Caulfield purely to make up the numbers.

“His win at Flemington was absolutely fantastic, particularly as we’d missed the run the week prior in the Heatherlie Handicap when we found a bit of mucus,” said Kent Jnr, who will also saddle up Rosberg’s stakes-placed sister Deep Pleasure (Deep Field) in the second race on the program.

“He had to carry 61 kilos and drew barrier 16 of 16, so he was set a huge task but to absorb the hot pressure set by Globe and still win was a very big effort, which is why we were happy to take our chance in the Group 1. The horse has done nothing but please us since his last run, he pulled up very well and this race did appeal to us.

“Mick’s won the race before [with Heart Of Dreams in 2009 and Rubiscent in 2007], so he knows what it takes and even though the likes of Buckaroo, Moira and Sir Delius are obviously class animals, they have bigger targets in mind so sometimes you can catch some of these better horses off guard if they’re having prep runs.

“Our horse is fit and well and he’s in career best form, so if ever we were going to test him out at Group 1 level, Saturday is probably the day. I don’t think he will look out of place at all in that company, he’ll put himself on speed and I’m confident he’ll give a very good sight.”

Al Riffa’s connections unfazed by Cup topweight

Al Riffa’s (Wootton Bassett) connections say they are unperturbed by the hefty 59kg impost handed to the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) favourite. Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) winner had earned the weight and would not be disadvantaged at Flemington on November 4. “It’s all relevant to what the other horses carry,” Lovett told Racing.com. “This year there will be a lot of imports sitting mid-weight. He might only be giving away four or five kilos to some, and that may not be enough given how he won on Sunday.” Al Riffa produced a dominant display at the Curragh, a performance which even surprised his owners. “The horse ran better than expectations,” Lovett said. “It was a strong edition of the race, and we were just hoping to run a place to set him up for the Cup. We probably copped half a kilo for winning, but I’m not disappointed. He’s earned that weight. Now he just has to travel down, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.” Al Riffa won’t be the only Cup contender in Australian Bloodstock’s spring arsenal, with Vauban (Galiway) set to line up for a third tilt at the $10 million Group 1 after being allotted 56.5kg. Lovett, however, believes Vauban’s best chance lies in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), where he will carry 58.5kg. “I think that’s his race,” he said.

Laxon pleased with Knight’s Cup impost

Co-trainer Sheila Laxon knows the challenge facing Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice) but last year’s Melbourne Cup hero received some relief with 55kg for his title defence. “We thought he might get a little more,” Laxon, who trains in partnership with John Symons, told Racing.com of the handicap. Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper David Hegan explained the gelding rises 3.5kg on last year, but with the Cup’s new weight scale, that equates to a 2.5kg lift. The last horse to win consecutive Cups was the great Makybe Diva (Desert King) in 2004, and Laxon admitted the gelding’s narrow win last November tempers confidence. “With that weight you can’t go in too bullish, but he’s come back a stronger six-year-old with more maturity,” she said. Laxon and Symons were encouraged by the gelding’s first-up sixth in the So You Think Stakes (1500m) at The Valley. “It was his first look at a tricky track. We were happy,” she said. Knight’s Choice will follow his 2024 path, beginning with Saturday’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m). He will then target the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) before connections decide whether to stick with the Caulfield and Bendigo Cups (Gr 3, 2400m) as lead-ups. “The weather will play a role,” Laxon said. “We’d love to get him back to Bendigo on firm ground – that gave him confidence last year.”

Underwood to determine spring path for Desert Lightning

Desert Lightning (Credit: Racing Photos)

Peter Moody says Saturday’s Underwood Stakes will decide the spring path for Desert Lightning (Pride Of Dubai). The So You Think Stakes winner is nominated for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), but Moody is keeping expectations in check until the gelding proves himself over 1800 metres at Group 1 level. “This will be decisive for the rest of his campaign,” Moody told Racing.com. “We’ll see whether he runs out a strong 1800 metres. He’s in good form, good order, and we’ll learn something one way or the other. The Cup or Plate talk is pie in the sky until then.” Desert Lightning resumed with a second to Private Eye (Al Maher) in the PB Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) before defeating Moira (Ghostzapper) at The Valley last time with Luke Nolen aboard. The six-year-old has not raced beyond a mile in his past 15 starts, nine of them under Moody and Katherine Coleman. Early in his career with New Zealand trainers Peter and Dawn Williams, he was tested successfully at longer trips – winning the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 1800m), finishing second in the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) and running eighth in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Moody believes Saturday’s race will show whether that early stamina can be reignited. “We’re testing the waters,” he said. “It’s a strong race at Caulfield and the right platform to see if he can stretch out.” Desert Lightning will jump from barrier three and was rated a $11 chance on Wednesday for the Underwood Stakes.

Sir Delius handed tricky Underwood draw

Favourite Sir Delius (Frankel) has been handed a tricky draw for Saturday’s Underwood Stakes at Caulfield, coming up with barrier 11 in a field of 12. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained import was an eye-catching second first-up when closing late behind Lindermann (Lonhro) in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), but others have fared better at the draw. Last year’s winner Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) will start from gate eight, while Chris Waller’s pair Anisette (Awtaad) (five) and Moira (four) are also well placed. Zardozi (Kingman), an eye-catching fifth when resuming behind Desert Lightning and Moira, jumps from ten alongside Sir Delius, while Melbourne Cup hero Knight’s Choice has drawn six. History suggests the inside half of the draw holds an advantage in the Underwood – since 2008, only four winners have jumped wider than barrier six. However, recent results buck that trend, with Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) (eight) and Buckaroo (ten) successful in the past two editions.

Smokin’ Romans all set for Underwood

Smokin' Romans (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ciaron Maher believes nine-year-old Smokin’ Romans (Ghibellines) is still capable of mixing it at the top level as he heads into Saturday’s Underwood Stakes at Caulfield. The gelding will be joined by stablemates Zardozi and Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) as Maher looks to wind back the clock. Smokin’ Romans made his mark at this meeting three years ago, winning the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) before claiming the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. He then started favourite in the Caulfield Cup, finishing seventh, before another seventh to Gold Trip (Outstrip) in the 2022 Melbourne Cup. Now on a Cups path once again, he holds 55.5kg in the Caulfield Cup and 53.5kg in the Melbourne Cup. He was unlucky not to add another victory last start when run down by Revelare (So You Think) at Caulfield, who franked the form by winning the Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m) last Saturday and booking a Cup berth. “Smokey’s in a really good spot,” Maher said. “He carried more weight than Revelare last time, and that horse has since shown the form. He’s on track for the Caulfield Cup.” Maher regards Middle Earth as a leading player for the Cups after his first Australian prep in the autumn. The import carries 56.5kg in the Caulfield Cup and 54.5kg in the Melbourne Cup. “He’ll strip fitter second-up, but 1800 metres is short of his best,” Maher said. Zardozi, a new addition from Godolphin, closed off strongly for fifth in the So You Think Stakes and is also pleasing the stable ahead of Saturday.

Slipper heroine set for Shorts resumption

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) heroine Marhoona (Snitzel) will kick off her spring in Saturday’s The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick as she builds towards the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington. Michael Freedman’s filly has not raced since her Slipper triumph in March but has been prepared with two trials. The trainer said her work, including a sharp gallop on Tuesday, suggested she had returned in good order. “She seems to have come back in great nick,” Freedman told Racing.com. “Both her trials have been good, and I was rapt with her gallop. It was also encouraging to see Tempted, who ran third in the Slipper, return and win the Run To The Rose last weekend.” Freedman indicated the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill next month is likely to be Marhoona’s second-up target before heading to the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on November 1. While the Snitzel filly also holds nominations for the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), Freedman said it was unlikely she would run over a mile this campaign. “I don’t think we’ll try her at 1600 metres this spring, but it could be something we look at in the autumn,” he said.

Royal Patronage to resume in 7 Stakes

Adrian Bott is taking encouragement from Mr Brightside’s (Bullbars) early spring form as stable stalwart Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett) prepares to resume at Randwick this weekend. The pair both travelled to Hong Kong in April for the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) but were well beaten. Since then, Mr Brightside has returned in top order, placing second in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) before winning the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last Saturday. “Things didn’t work out for him in Hong Kong but he’s had a good break off the back of that,” Bott said of Royal Patronage. “Mr Brightside has shown you can bounce back off those international preps. He seems in good shape and is coming up well.” Royal Patronage holds acceptances for the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) and the 7 Stakes (1600m), but Bott confirmed the latter is his likely starting point due to weight, draw and ballot position. While the mile is unfamiliar territory for him fresh, Bott believes the gelding has the grounding to handle it. “The mile first-up is new territory,” he said. “He’s been most effective fresh at 1300 or 1400 metres, but the mile is his ideal distance and he’s done plenty of work. He can be effective here.” Royal Patronage boasts strong credentials at the Randwick mile, having finished runner-up in the Doncaster (Gr 1, 1600m). This weekend’s 7 Stakes has drawn a field of 11, including last year’s winner Fangirl (Sebring) and dual Group 1 winner Ceolwulf (Tavistock).

Overpass locked in for third Everest attempt

Overpass (Vancouver) has become the sixth horse confirmed for the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), with slot-holders Newgate and GPI Racing securing the first-up specialist for this year’s feature. The Darby Racing-managed gelding is no stranger to the race, having contested the past two editions, although he finished unplaced both times. Since then however he has carved out a reputation as one of Australia’s most lethal fresh sprinters. Overpass has posted major wins in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), The Quokka (1200m) and the Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), and was narrowly denied by Briasa (Smart Missile) in the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in the autumn. Trainer Bjorn Baker said his stable “warhorse” had earned his way back into The Everest field. “Overpass has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most formidable sprinters,” Baker said. “With more than $10 million in prize-money, he has consistently proven his grit, tenacity and class on the nation’s biggest stages. He’s the ultimate competitor – tough, consistent and always up for a fight. To see him earn his place in the 2025 Everest is a huge honour.” Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) heads the current market as the odds-on favourite and is due to arrive in Sydney next week to begin quarantine before a public trial on October 7, ahead of his Everest bid at Randwick on October 18. Other confirmed starters are Jimmysstar (Per Incanto), Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), Briasa, Private Harry (Harry Angel) and Joliestar (Zoustar). The latter three will clash in this Saturday’s The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m), a key Everest prelude.

Single Choice impresses at Bendigo

Single Choice (Credit: Racing Photos)

Eoin Walsh and Matt Cumani look to have another promising three-year-old on their hands after Anders (Not A Single Doubt) gelding Single Choice made it two from two with a stylish win at Bendigo on Wednesday. An $80,000 purchase at the 2024 Inglis Classic Sale, Single Choice broke his maiden with ease on the Ballarat synthetic and stepped up to turf with a smart performance over 1300 metres. Caught three-wide and racing keenly in the small field, Single Choice ($6) copped a few bumps but travelled strongly into contention before Walsh kept him rolling late for a soft win over Mongolia Gobi (Ribchester). Cumani was pleased with the effort despite the awkward run. “You never like to see them three-wide at the back in a small field,” Cumani told Racing.com. “But I think it was probably the wise move, because going inside might’ve left us stuck. Late on it was tight on the rail, so being out wide let him make ground when ready. He still leaned in down the straight, but he’ll strengthen and improve.” Cumani indicated a city assignment now looms. “We’ve been careful not to jump him too far in grade, but we can be more aggressive now,” he said. “He’s a gelding, so no rush, but we’ll look for a nice three-year-old race in town next start.”

Schiller strikes at Canterbury ahead of Briasa’s Everest kick-off

Tyler Schiller combined with Team Hawkes for a confidence-boosting win at Canterbury on Wednesday, just days before he reunites with Group 1 winner Briasa to launch his Everest campaign. Schiller guided lightly raced stayer Tastula (More Than Ready) to victory in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1900m), the jockey’s first win since returning from a compression fracture to his T8 vertebrae suffered in May. “Finally. I carved a few corners out of the stone and got the ball moving,” Schiller told Racing.com. “Hopefully there are good things to come on the weekend with the colours of the Johnson family. Hopefully Briasa can do the same.” The midweek win was also a boost for the Hawkes stable and owners, with Briasa set to step out in Saturday’s Shorts at Randwick as part of his build-up to The Everest. Tastula, having only his tenth start, impressed Schiller with the way he lengthened late. “I took him out at the 500 metres and he kept up a strong gallop to the line,” he said. “He’s definitely Saturday grade in staying company. He was floating a bit late, so there’s still improvement. He’s a big, rangy horse who will get further.” Gerald Ryan also unearthed a smart prospect on the program when Snitzel Dancer (Snitzel) scored on debut in the TAB Handicap (1250m). Despite being off the bridle before the turn, the filly dug deep to overhaul Equerry (Snitzel) and Shangri La Boy (Pierro). “She has always shown good promise,” Ryan said. “She’ll improve again, but I think the autumn is when she’ll really shine in a race like the James Carr Stakes.”

Basilinna ruled out for spring

Melbourne Cup contender Basilinna (Stephanos) has been ruled out of the spring after Racing Victoria confirmed the mare will undergo surgery to remove bone chips from her near fore fetlock. The setback ends the campaign for the Emma-Lee and David Browne-trained stayer, who had booked her spot in the Cup by winning the Andrew Ramsden (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington in May. Basilinna resumed late last month, finishing behind Revelare over 2000 metres at Caulfield, in what proved to be her only outing this spring. She had been allotted 51kg in the Cup weights. Her absence is a major blow to the Brownes, who were aiming for a first Cup appearance since relocating from New Zealand.

Inglis formalises partnership with China Horse Owners Alliance

Inglis has announced the China Horse Owners Alliance (CHOA) as its new China representative in a move designed to further strengthen international engagement. CHOA, which represents almost 90 per cent of horse owners in mainland China, has been operating for a decade and will work closely with Inglis to increase participation of Chinese owners across all sales, including Inglis Digital. General secretary Mr Huang Qingcai described the appointment as an honour. “Inglis is a highly trusted and revered company that has been around for more than 150 years, so to be formally associated with them is a big compliment to the CHOA,” Mr Huang said. “We look forward to working with the Inglis team as we continue to build a strong relationship together.” Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said the agreement was a significant moment for the company. “We believe the Chinese market has great growth potential, so to formalise an association with CHOA is very important,” Hutch said. “We have great respect for Mr Zhang, Mr Huang and the entire Alliance and what they have already achieved.” Inglis executives Nicky Wong and James Price last week attended the Yulong Sale and race day at Youyu, noting strong interest among participants in the Australian market. Wong said the partnership was a natural progression. The partnership will commence ahead of the Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Riverside Stables in Sydney on October 16, just two days before The Everest.

Spencer impressive in Trentham warm-up

Spencer (Credit: Race Images)

Connections of Group 3 winner Spencer (Derryn) have been buoyed by a slick trial win ahead of his return in Saturday’s CR Grace Ltd And Waterforce 1200 (1200m) at Trentham. Trainer Erin Hocquard elected to give the gelding a hit-out after a tough run in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m), where he endured another wide trip. Spencer had previously scored at Trentham in May under similar conditions. At the Foxton trials, the six-year-old flew out of the gates for Kavish Chowdhoory and was never headed, coasting to the line under his own steam. “I was happy with that – it was a nice little hit-out before Saturday,” Hocquard said. “He gets above himself quickly and can put on a bit of weight, so it should trim him up.” Spencer shares topweight of 62kg but will carry 4kg less under apprentice Sienna Brown, who rode him into third at Te Rapa two starts ago.

Three-year-old fillies impress at Taupo

Two promising three-year-old fillies broke through for maiden success at Taupo on Wednesday, each staking claims for higher honours later in the season. Oratia Beauty (Too Darn Hot) was the first to strike for Jomara Bloodstock in the Fox & Hounds Taupo (1300m). The Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) filly was tardy away before jockey Matt Cameron settled her three back on the fence. She travelled kindly and, when presented with a gap on turning, surged through to defeat Kygo Star (Wootton Bassett) by 0.4 lengths. “I ended up three back the fence and she travelled nicely, and she won nicely,” Cameron said. Trainer Kylie Hoskin was pleased to see her filly deliver on better footing. “She has always shown us a lot. We ended up on wet tracks previously, but back to a good surface she showed her true ability. I’m rapt with that,” Hoskin said. “Now we can start looking at some nice races for her.” A race later, debutante Places To Be (Hello Youmzain) produced an emphatic front-running display in the Prezzy Card Northern Country Cups Series (1300m). Jumping from the inside draw, Craig Grylls sent the filly forward, and she skipped clear to score by four lengths. Trainer Kelly Van Dyk said the filly had always shown talent but impressed her with her professionalism. “Her work has been sensational. She’s tough, she’s got that will to win, but she’s not easy,” Van Dyk said. Co-bred with Ben Kwok and raced in partnership with Kwok and agent Bevan Smith, Places To Be now has the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton in November firmly on the radar.

HK: McDonald granted short-term permit to ride in Hong Kong

James McDonald headlines a quartet of jockeys to be granted short-term licences to ride in Hong Kong this season. The Kiwi will return for another mid-season stint in the city, riding from November 12 to December 23, while Britain’s Hollie Doyle will join him from November 5 to December 23. Champion French jockey Maxine Guyon will add to Hong Kong’s world-class riding ranks after being granted a licence from November 30 to March 1 and Dylan Browne McMonagle will make his Hong Kong debut when he rides from January 1 to March 29.

US: Yaupon's $560,000 colt set for career with Asmussen

Hinkle Farms' colt by Yaupon (Uncle Mo) from the family of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Tapizar (Tapit) sold to owner Mike McCarty for US$560,000 (approx. AU$838,700) to lead Tuesday’s eighth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Out of Media Circus (Mineshaft), hip 2469 is understood to be heading to Steve Asmussen, trainer of the Grade 1-winning sire whose first crop have been racing this year. "He was a lovely-moving horse; a lot of good judges of horses liked him a lot," Tom Hinkle of Hinkle Farms told BloodHorse. "We couldn't have asked for him to get a better opportunity than going to Steve Asmussen. We're delighted. Our team on the farm, and Anne Archer, did a great job of raising him and getting him ready up to the sale." Of the sire, who has produced two stakes winners so far and stands at Spendthrift Farm, Hinkle added: "Yaupon's been great. Steve trained Yaupon, so it makes a lot of sense for him to have this one in his barn. The Yaupons are getting it done on the track, and I would expect them to continue.” Keeneland sold 276 yearlings through the ring on Tuesday for US$24,495,000 (approx. AU$36,688,659), for an average of US$88,750 (approx. AU$132,900) and a median of US$70,000 (approx. AU$104,846). The gross was 18 per cent higher than the eighth session in 2024, when 286 horses sold for $20,827,500. The average was 22 per cent above $72,823 in 2024, while the median rose 27 per cent from $55,000 last year.

There’s a little twist of irony for Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) tragics Colleen and Kevin Bamford as the well known owner-breeders head towards this year’s edition of Australia’s greatest race.

Back in 2000, the Victorian couple took the bold step of bringing out English horse Far Cry (Pharly) to target the Cup - one of the very early examples of European stayers being imported to Australia, in an idea that would catch on in no uncertain fashion.

Far Cry ran in the Cup, well fancied at $9, but jarred up on a good 3 and finished second-last, as Mike Moroney’s Brew (Sir Tristram) triumphed.

A trickle of European stayers became a torrent which became a deluge. The Bamfords reaped success from it too, co-owning French stallion Americain (Dynaformer) for his 2010 Cup victory and into his stud career.

They also part-owned English raider Jardine’s Lookout (Fourstars Allstar), who ran third in Makybe Diva’s (Desert King) first Cup in 2003, a year after running seventh.

But now, a quarter of a century after Far Cry, the Bamfords are lining up for the Cup with a stayer who’s every inch Australian born and bred.

They bred Revelare (So You Think) themselves, and after booking his ticket in becoming a stakes winner in last Saturday’s Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m) - his eighth win in 11 starts - he’s an $11 chance for the big one.

For all of the European stayers dotting the landscape, and the visitors from the same part of the world who come to raid the race, Australians haven’t been doing too badly in the Cup. One won it last year in Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice), and another in 2019 in Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War).

But the significance of having an Australian-bred winner in the modern age would not be lost on the Bamfords.

“I’m extremely proud of it - this horse we’ve bred being in the Cup,” Colleen Bamford told It’s In The Blood from her farm at Doreen, on Melbourne’s outer northern fringe.

“We’ve had half a dozen or so Melbourne Cup runners, and we’ve won the Melbourne Cup, but this is different. I bred this horse, he was born on this farm - a hundred metres from where I’m sitting now. There won’t be many Australian-bred horses in the race, so for him to win it, it would remind people that it can be done.

“We were some of the groundbreakers in importing stayers here. But now it’s like we’ve come a complete circle.

“Revelare was born a hundred metres from where I’m sitting now. It’s a little bit surreal, but it’s very exciting.”

For full disclosure, it should probably be pointed out that while Revelare is Australian bred, only two of the 62 names in his first five generations carry the (AUS) suffix: the New Zealand-bred So You Think’s third dam Pak Bun Bay, and her sire Matinee Idol. But in this day and age, let’s not split hairs.

Colleen Bamford grew up in inner urban Fitzroy, but in a family steeped in racing, with a grandfather who was an SP bookie, and a father and uncles who’d gather around the wireless on a Saturday afternoon, if they weren’t at the track.

From early on Colleen was involved with horses, owning a pony in Fitzroy, later training gallopers in the 1970s, while also preparing pacers.

“The Melbourne Cup was just the race, always, from when I was a child,” she said. “The dream was, if you had a racehorse, it didn’t matter where it was racing, you just wanted to have a horse in the Melbourne Cup.

“I’ve always had a great fascination with the race. And now we're in it again with Revelare. Somebody asked me if he can win. I’d like to think he can. He’s in with a light weight (51.5kg), and his jockey [Declan Bates] thinks he can win.”

The Bamfords were all too happy to stay in the ownership when Revelare went through their local neighbourhood sale - Inglis Premier - for $130,000, and happier still that the buyer was trainer Robert Hickmott.

He’d won two Cups with another first Tuesday obsessive, leviathan owner Lloyd Williams, via Europeans Almandin (Monsun) in 2016, and Green Moon (Montjeu) in 2012, and knows his way around stayers.

“He was a beautiful colt - big, but not overly big,” Bamford said. “But the thing is, Rob took his time with the horse. That’s what’s made him.

“He didn’t race until he was a late three-year-old, and that suited me. I wasn’t in a hurry. He had a great education - he just goes around with a bridle on, no special gear. He’s a lovely, big relaxed horse, and he hasn’t been cooked.”

Revelare didn’t debut until he was a June three-year-old, and scored second-up on the Ballarat synthetic over 1500 metres. Put away for more maturing, he returned for a second at Seymour before winning his next five, as a short-priced favourite each time, capped by back-to-back autumn wins at Flemington.

Brought back in, he scored second-up at Caulfield last month over 2000 metres, then handled his rise to 2500m for the Archer like a Cup horse, easing to the front at the 200 metres and coasting home by 0.4 lengths.

“One commentator said he looked like the 2500 metres was about his limit, but I don’t know about that,” Bamford said. “When he gets to the front he thinks ‘I’ve done my job now’; he’s such a relaxed animal. Will he run 3200 metres? I think he will.

“We don’t really know how good he is. I don’t believe we’ve tested him to his limits yet. We keep putting the bar up and he keeps reaching it.”

Breeding a Melbourne Cup winner was the dream, but breeding a stayer was the definite expectation when the Bamfords bought Revelare’s dam Reveal The Goddess (Zabeel) for $62,500, at the old Inglis Sydney Easter Broodmare sale in 2013.

Bred in New Zealand but raced in Australia, she’d only won a Bendigo maiden among six starts, though it was over 2400 metres, but her sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram) was of course a New Zealand staying byword, with three Melbourne Cup winners in Might And Power, Jezabeel and Efficient.

Reveal The Goddess’s female side was also stamina-rich. Her dam was Honor Babe (Honor Grades), New Zealand’s Champion Stayer of 2002-03 after taking the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) among five wins that season.

The main aim in her purchase was to put Reveal The Goddess to the Bamford’s change to Bamfords' own stallion, Americain. They did this for three of her first four matings, and to Puissance De Lune (Shamardal) on the other, but to no great success. A fifth cover to more precocious blood, in the form of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro) also failed.

Finally in 2019, helped by advice from the trainer Robbie Laing and another friend and associate Mark Hoare, sadly both now departed, they went to the stallion the Bamford’s Americain had beaten into third as favourite in the 2010 Cup, So You Think (High Chaparral).

“Robbie was a pedigrees oracle,” Bamford said. “And Mark had also done some investigation into the breeding and he also said to put her to So You Think.”

Up close, which is where most of Colleen Bamford’s attention is focused, putting So You Think over a Zabeel mare enacted some breeding gold.

Zabeel is easily So You Think’s best nick (of more than 11 runners), with 29 winners from 42 starters including seven black type victors at 16.6 per cent, with its best product being triple Group 1 winner Think It Over.

Just as good is So You Think’s sire High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) over Zabeel mares, with 35 winners - eight in black type - from 49 runners.. The best of them is Dundeel, who along with So You Think and Toronado is one of three High Chaparral sons currently in the top nine on the Australian general sires’ table.

“I’ve always loved So You Think as a stallion, and the High Chaparral over Zabeel mares has been a great cross,” Bamford said.

A little further back, Revelare’s pedigree brings some intrigue through two pieces of fifth generation inbreeding.

Influential US mare Special (Forli) is gender balanced through her two most famous offspring - Fairy Bridge (Bold Reason), dam of So You Think’s grandsire Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), and Nureyev (Northern Dancer), Zabeel’s damsire.

And US stallion Round Table (Princequillo) is there through two daughters, though a little tucked away. Dancealot is the dam of So You Think’s damsire Tights (Nijinsky), and Isolt is the dam of the mighty Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor), Zabeel’s sire.

Further back, Revelare may draw some strength from duplications of two key mares from early last century: Plucky Liege (Spearmint) is at 9m x 9m, 9m through three of her four famous sons in Bull Dog (Teddy), Admiral Drake (Craig En Eran) and Sir Gallahad (Teddy); and La Troienne (Teddy) is at 9m x 9f.

And the influential mare underpinning the whole is Selene (Chaucer), who makes 12 appearances, nine from her star son Hyperion (Gainsborough), two from another son Pharamond (Phalaris), and one through All Moonshine (Bobsleigh), Sir Tristram’s third dam.

Nearco (Pharos) is probably the most influential stallion across the older base of the pedigree, with 14 mentions from generations six to nine, while Gainsborough (Bayardo) is the most represented sire of the first nine columns, mostly through Hyperion but also through two other sons and two daughters.
