Yulong colts headline huge day for Darley’s Harry Angel

Angel Capital (Racing Photos)

Yulong is set for another significant Saturday of racing, with a pair of high-profile Harry Angel (Dark Angel) colts bidding to further enhance their reputations on what could prove a definitive afternoon for Darley’s rising shuttle sire.

Yuesheng Zhang’s behemoth operation acquired Angel Capital earlier this year in the aftermath of his classy Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) win, and then swiftly snapped up a 50 per cent share in Private Harry following his memorable Group 1 breakthrough in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) back in March.

Angel Capital was quick to further vindicate his purchase by producing a fantastic first-up performance, winning the Chautauqua Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at The Valley by 3.8 lengths – a fourth stakes win for the now Chris Waller-trained four-year-old, whose only blip in his Classic year came when sixth in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

A five-time winner from eight starts, Angel Capital will step up to Group 1 level for the second time in Saturday’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield and with an attractive weight of 53.5 kilograms under Damian Lane, Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray is quietly confident the colt is well-placed to add a maiden top-flight victory to his CV.

“Angel Capital was dynamic in his first race and we’ll see tomorrow whether he can back that up,” Fairgray told ANZ News. “We don’t wanna jump the gun, but he’s definitely gone to a new level as he’s matured more this preparation.

What's On

“We went to Brisbane looking to give him a couple of runs up there [in the winter] but the tracks were against us so we decided not to run, which could have been a good thing because it’s allowed him time to furnish and he’s come back bigger and stronger.”

Saturday’s 1400-metre contest is set to serve as a marker for Angel Capital’s ideal trip this time in. While fancied by former trainer Clinton McDonald as a potential sprinter earlier in the year, he is out of a South Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) placegetter in Bahamas (Teofilo), making him a half-brother to Senor Toba (Toronado) and Berkeley Square (Territories) – both Group winners over 2400 metres and 2040 metres respectively.

A dirty scope ruled the colt out of a second crack at a mile in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) back in March.

“Saturday is going to tell us a bit more about him,” Fairgray said. “There’s plenty of races ahead of us, whether we come back or go up in distance.

“It’d be nice if he won tomorrow and then there’s options like the Golden Eagle [1500m] and that sort of thing. We’ll very much leave it up to Chris, he understands that we’re in the business of trying to produce stallions and he'll place them to the right effect.

“If we can knock off that Group 1 with him, that’s very important for his future at stud and it allows you to pick and choose a bit more where you go. He gets in nicely at the weights so it’s the right time to take advantage of that.

“Both he and Private Harry are very untapped really so you’d think they’re only going to get better the deeper they go into their preps. It was pure coincidence that they both came together, but it’s very exciting to have them heading into the spring.”

Undefeated in five starts, Private Harry arguably shapes as Australia’s main hope for next month’s $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) having been locked in to race in Yulong’s slot since March.

The Nathan Doyle-trained sprinter has not been seen since his Galaxy victory, which was his first foray into stakes company after dominant city wins at Rosehill and in the inaugural $3 million Sunlight Stakes (1100m) at the Sunshine Coast.

Having posted two trial wins last month, Private Harry will attempt to hit the ground running with Yulong as part-owner when he resumes in Saturday’s The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick – a race which will see him face off against a couple of Everest rivals in Briasa (Smart Missile) and Joliestar (Zoustar).

“It’s not going to be an easy race, there are a couple of very, very good horses in there, but if he’s going to measure up in The Everest he’s got to measure up tomorrow,” Fairgray said.

“We expect him to run well but Nathan has said there’s still improvement to come. Everything has been super, he’s spelled well, Nathan’s given him a really nice slow build-up this preparation. He looks amazing – I saw a photo yesterday of him and he just looks absolutely fantastic and he’s trialled well.”

Fairgray acknowledged the strength in Saturday’s field but believes Private Harry has the capacity to thrive up against stiffer opposition.

“He’s an interesting horse — he’s a real fighter,” he said. “When a horse challenges him, that's when he’s at his best, he likes a fight.”

On the challenge that Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) poses to Yulong’s Everest claims next month, Fairgray added: “Obviously he is very, very good horse who’s going to be hard to beat, but travelling horses can be hard and it’s going to be a different style of race — there will be a lot more pressure in The Everest.

“It will be fantastic, it’s great for racing that Ka Ying Rising is coming to Sydney but we have some very good sprinters so he won’t be given it on a plate.”

Bred by Rheinwood Pastoral out of three-time winner Happy Pilgrim (Congrats), Private Harry was a $115,000 purchase for Nathan Doyle and part-owners Kurrinda Bloodstock at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in 2023, while Angel Capital was originally a $400,000 purchase for Upper Bloodstock and G Ho from Mill Park Stud at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Both four-year-olds, the pair were conceived from a relatively modest $16,500 (inc GST) fee, which Harry Angel stood for at Darley’s Kelvinside base between 2020 and 2022, covering a total of 385 mares in that period.

From three crops and 138 runners in Australia, the son of Dark Angel (Acclamation) has produced 92 winners. Of his 20 stakes winners worldwide, he boasts three Group 1 winners – Tom Kitten, Private Harry and War Machine – all bred and raced in Australia.

Having raced away with the the nation’s third-season sires’ title this year, he duly stands this season at an increased fee of $66,000 (inc GST), up from $38,500 last year.

Saturday showcases the strength in depth of the stallion’s runners, with Group 2 winners Arkansaw Kid and Stretan Angel also representing. The former joins Angel Capital in the Sir Rupert Clarke off the back of his Bobbie Lewis Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) triumph last Saturday, while the latter lines up for The Taggart (1200m) on the same card.

“It’s a big day for Harry Angel and it’s obviously a very good indication of how well the stallion is going that he can have such a number of significant runners on one day on a key spring day, so we’re delighted,” Darley Australia’s head of stallions Alastair Pulford told ANZ News.

“He really is firing down here, he’s building on a really impressive start and these horses are clearly not one-dimensional and one-hit wonders because they’ve all been in multiple campaigns now and are all stepping up levels every time they reach a new campaign.

“Angel Capital was amazing first-up the other day, he was super impressive and we know how good Private Harry is already from his almost meteoric rise to fame really. He’s been a fantastic horse. You’ve got to be winning these big spring races obviously, that’s what owners and breeders are looking for, these key events that highlight the best horses.”

Pulford said that the 11-year-old Harry Angel, who also finished inside the top ten on the general sires’ table for the 2024-25 season despite a comparatively small number of Australian runners, has already cemented himself as a cornerstone stallion at Kelvinside and is receiving plenty of support this season.

“His place is set in stone here now, he’s becoming a very, very important stallion for us,” Pulford said.

“He is fully booked this year and his popularity is increasing all the time – every day we have people ringing on the off-chance there is an opportunity to get another mare in. He’s absolutely flying.

“I can only see, off the back of better and better books coming through, his fortunes rising. It’s exciting when you get a horse like this, he’s a high-class stallion and suits the Australian mares.

“We’re all looking for that beautiful outcross and he’s a complete outcross, not only in terms of Danehill blood – he was the first commercial son of Dark Angel to stand in Australia, so he’s a very exciting animal.”

Five for Phoenix Of Spain

Soul Of Spain (5 g ex Aimhirgin Lass by Pivotal) became the fifth individual stakes winner for Phoenix Of Spain (Lope De Vega) when landing the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) at Newcastle on Friday. Ridden by Zac Lloyd for trainer Chris Waller, the five-year-old Irish import took his Australian record to four wins from as many starts as he defeated Royal Supremacy (Make Believe) by 0.7 lengths. The winner’s stablemate Travolta (Lope de Vega) finished a further 0.3 lengths back in third. “Every time Chris raises the bar, he just seems to jump through it,” stable representative Zane Jones said. “He's got plenty of upside, he's lightly raced, he's continuing to build a good record. It was a run full of merit the other day [when winning at Doomben] and we were under no illusions that it was a harder assignment today but he's passed with flying colours.” Initially sold for €50,000 at the 2022 Goffs Orby Sale, Soul Of Spain was then re-offered as a two-year-old at the 2023 Arqana Breeze-Up Sale where he was purchased for €160,000 by Blanford Bloodstock and Albert Bosma's Go Racing. Out of the Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Aimhirgin Lass, Soul Of Spain comes from the family of Golden Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Malhub (Kingmambo). Phoenix Of Spain stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at the Irish National Stud for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$17,800).

65 for So You Think

So You Think (Credit: Coolmore)

Coolmore stallion So You Think (High Chaparral) chalked up his 65th individual stakes winner on Friday when Oh Diamond Lil (5 m ex Rare Diamond by Redoute’s Choice) scored in the Tibbie Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Newcastle. Having won her previous two starts in handicap grade, the David Pfieffer-trained mare made it a hat-trick as she beat Verona Rose (Castelvecchio) by a length with a further 0.4 lengths back to Tuileries (So You Think) in third place. “She's done her traditional thing, she rolled forward and she got into a good rhythm and that was the key thing - it's just getting into that rhythm,” said Pfieffer. “She's never going to sprint off the mark, but she just builds with her speed and then probably finds another solid gear and just keeps going. To win a Group 3 sets her up nicely for a future stud career and her upcoming campaign. We have a few options; there's obviously the Angst Stakes and we’re going to look at something like the Five Diamonds Prelude.” Oh Diamond Lil was a $200,000 purchase for her trainer and Koolman Bloodstock from Maluka Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and is one of four winners from five to race out of the stakes-winning Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Rare Diamond. So You Think is standing for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Headley Grange doubles stakes tally

Headley Grange (5 g Exosphere - Hard Go Jo by Hard Spun) added a second stakes race to his CV when scoring in Friday’s Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m) at Newcastle. The Joe Pride-trained five-year-old landed the Group 3 contest by 1.1 lengths over Vivy Air (Hellbent) under Adam Hyeronimus, with a further 0.7 lengths back to Fully Lit (Hellbent) in third. Stopping the clock at 1m 28.32s, Headley Grange smashed the previous track record achieved by the Chirs Waller-trained Democracy Manifest (Flying Artie) in this race two years prior. "I thought if this horse had a weakness it was going to be the firm track but he has put that to bed with a track record,'' said Pride. "He has an amazing winning record, this horse. He has a nomination for the Epsom [Handicap] and we might go there through to the Big Dance.'' Friday's success took Headley Grange's career record to ten wins and a further seven placings from 21 starts, with over $820,000 earned in prize-money.

Inglis September (Late) Online Sale now open

A share in Group 1 winner Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) headlines the Inglis Digital September (Late) Online Sale, which is now open for bidding. The ten per cent share is a rare opportunity to buy into an elite, blue-blooded mare targeting further Group 1 riches this spring. Charm Stone was a Group 3 winner at both two and three and a Group 1 winner at four, and has amassed over $1.34 million in prize-money. Her career highlight to date came with victory in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in April. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained mare will next be aimed at either the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) or the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in the coming fortnight. Last-start winner Anarchist (Exceed And Excel) is another highlight entry in the September (Late) Online Sale catalogue. The progressive three-year-old colt is a son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and out of Group 1-winning mare Media Sensation (I Am Invincible). In total the September (Late) Online Sale consists of 301 lots – 107 racehorses (82 race fillies), 56 racehorse shares, 41 broodmares, 13 yearlings and 2 unraced stock. Williams chasing more Sir Rupert Clarke glory

History runs deep for Craig Williams in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and the champion jockey is hoping to add another chapter when he partners Sepals (Calyx) in Saturday’s Group 1 at Caulfield. Between himself and his father Alan, the Williams family have combined for nine wins in the race since Alan piloted Private Talk (Paddy Me) in 1979 in what was then called the Marlboro Cup. Craig already sits atop the honour roll with seven, most recently guiding Kimochi (Brave Smash) to victory last year. This spring, Williams identified Sepals as the right horse to continue that record, securing the ride once regular jockey Ethan Brown was unable to make the weight. “Sepals fits the bill as a progressive horse with a lot of upside,” Williams told Racing.com. “He’s just turned four and there’s improvement to come. Hopefully he’s the right one again.” The Cliff Brown-trained gelding has drawn wide in barrier 16, though Williams notes horses from awkward gates have often figured in the Rupert Clarke. Williams also links with Sir Delius (Frankel) in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, a mount he hopes could lead to a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) association. “I’d love to ride him in the Cup. He’s an exciting horse,” Williams said. “I sat on him Tuesday and was really impressed by his mannerisms, his type, and the way he worked.”

Sir Delius out to press home Carnival claims

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Sir Delius (Frankel) will take another step towards both the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when he tackles Saturday's Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old French import has made two starts in Australia to date, winning on his debut in the Chairman's Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) back in May before resuming with a first-up second in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick on September 6. The entire has since been relocated to Flemington and has drawn gate 11 in this weekend's 12-horse field. "He went down to Melbourne not long after his run up here and he seems in good shape," Bott said. "He worked on the course proper there, got a good feel for the tracks down there and he has worked up nicely. He should appreciate getting out that little bit further in distance again. I'd like to think he will show some nice improvement off that first-up run. It was a lovely first-up run. He lost no admirers, and he looks set for a nice campaign."

Waller chases first win in Caulfield Guineas Prelude

Chris Waller is hoping to land a first win in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) when he saddles Estremo (Extreme Choice) in Saturday's Group 3 event. Waller is a three-time winner of the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October, with Press Statement (Hinchinbrook), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) and Private Life (Written Tycoon) all taking out the Group 1 contest. The latter of that trio also took in this weekend's Caulfield Guineas Prelude, running fourth, and Waller is now aiming to repeat the feat with Estremo. The Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) colt has had two Moonee Valley runs, finishing third behind Guineas Prelude opponent Space Rider (Zoustar) on August 23 and then fifth to Rosberg (Deep Field) on September 6 in the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) - his first try at stakes level. "I probably made a mistake running him over too short a distance last time," Waller said. "He was probably ready for 1400 metres last start, and he gets the 1400 metres this week. He's had a couple of races running left-handed in Melbourne and he's been running well, so he'll get his chance on Saturday."

Briasa drawn well in The Shorts

Briasa (Credit: Sportpix)

Connections of Briasa (Smart Missile) are pleased with the five-year-old's barrier draw for Saturday's The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick, with the Team Hawkes-trained gelding alongside favourite Private Harry (five) in gate four. Winner of the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in April, Briasa is being set for next month's The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) and jockey Tyler Schiller is hoping his mount can lay down a marker this weekend. "I was happy when I saw the barrier draw because it gives us more of a chance to come out and be nice to him rather than force him somewhere from a bad draw, like in the Galaxy when he had to go back and set himself too big a task," Schiller said. "He gets a good draw and he's jumping well. He should put himself in the race and if he's got the coat tails of Private Harry, he's going to go a long way. It's a very hot race. You've got Private Harry, Joliestar and Briasa that are all going to The Everest so it's like a mini Everest without all of the favoured runners being there. He's got a great attitude. He doesn't have any quirks. He just does his job, pins his ears back and tries very hard."

Fangirl to relish Randwick return

Four-time Group 1-winning mare Fangirl (Sebring) will bid to land back-to-back wins in the 7 Stakes (1600m) as the seven-year-old returns to Randwick. Trained by Chris Waller, the daughter of Sebring (More Than Ready) is at home on the Randwick track and connections feel she will appreciate getting back to her stomping ground after a fourth placing behind Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last month. "She just didn't handle Caulfield as well as we'd hoped," Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. "It was her first time around there. She still ran ok and she has still taken good fitness benefit from the trip down and up and her work has actually been really sharp since she has returned. There is no negative to her running down there and she loves the Randwick mile. She is the only filly in the race but she stumps up every prep. She always wins a 'biggie' so it's hard to knock her." Fangirl will be joined by stablemates Lindermann (Lonhro), Kovalica (Ocean Park), Militarize (Dundeel) and Kadavar (Tarzino), with Militarize coming in on the back of an eye-catching fifth behind Pericles (Street Boss) in the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). "His last run rated quite highly in terms of all of his first-up performances. It rated as the second best first-up performance of his entire career so that indicates he is in for a good preparation," Duckworth said of Militarize. "It made it hard coming off the back of a breeding barn preparation whereas he's coming off the back of a racing preparation now so he's one that can bounce back and prove he is still a Group 1 horse."

Queen Of Clubs on Group 1 trial

The Gary Portelli-trained Queen Of Clubs (Maurice) will be on trial for a potential crack at a Group 1 when she lines up in Saturday's Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick. Being geared up for the Flight stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in a fortnight's time, the three-year-old daughter of Maurice (Screen Hero) ran third in last month's Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on her first crack at stakes level and Portelli feels she has plenty of scope to improve on that. “I think she’s certainly got the potential, the market suggests we’ve got a filly good enough to win a Group 1,’’ Portelli told Racing NSW. “These are the best fillies [in the Tea Rose] so we’ll know more this weekend. The main thing is that this is the race we have to have to go to the Group 1 spot on. She didn’t put two strides together [in the Silver Shadow] but it was just her guts and stamina that got her over horses late and into third spot. It was such a tough run first-up the last thing we wanted to do was go back to six furlongs. We’ve been able to manage it perfectly by having a gallop between races and the trial to keep her ticking over for 1400 metres. We’d love to see some good tracks going forward.”

Super Duck bidding to land Big Dance spot

Warwick-based trainer Michael Hemmings is dreaming of a Big Dance (1600m) start for his six-year-old Super Duck (Supido) and will send the gelding to Saturday's Pink Ribbon Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast. Super Duck provided Hemmings with his first metropolitan winner at Doomben in May and his second in the city when successful on the same track in July. Bred by Hemmings and his wife Naomi, who also is a trainer in her own right at Warwick, the son of Supido (Sebring) also ran second in the Murwillumbah Cup (1550m) two starts back. “We bred him and tried to sell him at the Magic Millions but he was passed in after we never got a decent offer,” Naomi Hemmings told Racing Queensland. “He’s not just restricted to wet tracks. It’s more that he can handle the wet while others don’t seem to handle it as good as him. He’s just as good on top of the ground as he is on wet tracks. He’s super fit and we’ve never had him as fit as we have him now. He should be hard to beat again and if he runs well, he’ll go down for The Big Dance. If he misses the race for some reason then he can still run in The Little Dance.”

Rangiotu gelding chasing further stakes success

Chase (Credit: Race Images)

Group 1 performer Chase (Zed) has been in a rich vein of form of late and he will attempt to continue that at Trentham on Saturday in the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1600m). The nine-year-old son of Zed (Zabeel) returned to the winner’s circle in July before heading south to Riccarton last month where he was a popular winner of the Winter Cup (Gr 3, 1600m), and trainer Stephen Nickalls has been pleased with the way he has come through his southern venture. “He is a pretty seasoned campaigner now, not much worries him,” he said. “He came home, had a week in the paddock and he put on 15 kilos. He did very well out of the trip down there. He is in fantastic form, he is thriving on everything. He doesn’t know that he is nine years old, he is really well and doing everything we could ask of him.” Chase hasn’t been sighted on raceday since, but that hasn’t been by design, and Nickalls has kept him up to the mark with a 1000-metre trial at Waverley a fortnight ago. “It has been seven weeks between runs, he has been a victim of the programming around here, there have been no open miles in the CD,” Nickalls said. “We have had to play that waiting game, but he is really well and he trialled at Waverley and trialled really well.”

Key Ellerslie assignments for Marsh three-year-olds

Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh has 14 horses entered across the ten-race card at Ellerslie on Saturday, and more than half of them are three-year-olds facing crucial early-season assignments. Marsh has proven black-type performers Little Black Dress (Snitzel), Lady Iris (U S Navy Flag) and Tale Of The Gypsy (Written By) in Saturday’s Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 1400m), backed up by a range of emerging age-group talent on the undercard. Last-start Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) placegetters Churmatt (Churchill) and Swiss Prince (El Roca) will contest the NZB Ready to Run Sale Trainers Series 3YO (1400m), while the Join TAB Racing Club (1200m) features first-starters Earlicheer (Super Seth) and Well Written (Written Tycoon). “I think we’ll know a bit more about some of these three-year-olds after Saturday,” Marsh said. Marsh singled out Churmatt as the three-year-old he was most excited about on Saturday’s card. The son of Churchill (Galileo) was a three-length winner on debut at Rotorua on August 13, then finished only half a length behind Platinum Diamond (Hello Youmzain) when second in the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) on August 30. “He’s a three-year-old that we’ve got a lot of time for,” Marsh said. “He ran a top race for second in the Wanganui Guineas last time out, in only his second start, and he won very well before that. I think he’s got a really nice season in front of him.” Marsh is also upbeat about his Sunline Vase trio, who all acquitted themselves well in black-type features at Ellerslie two weeks ago. “I thought they all performed with credit that day, and they’ve all gone the right way from there,” Marsh said. “It’s a hot field on Saturday and their performances here will have a real bearing on what we do with them from here.”

New stable recruit set to shine again

Martell (Credit: Monica Toretto)

Martell (El Roca) made an instant impact in his first appearance from his new quarters and more of the same is forecast at Gore. The former Jim Collett-prepared sprinter made a successful South Island debut at Wingatui earlier this month and is expected to go close to adding Sunday’s Advance Agriculture Open (1100m) to his record. He will head a strong hand for trainer Kelvin Tyler who will also be represented by Go Lotte (Telperion), while stablemates Vamos (Vadamos) and Prince Alby (Sacred Falls) are top chances in the Kevin Coyle Memorial Open (1800m). The Riverton horseman will also be keeping a close eye on the Marton meeting at Trentham where Freddie Time (Time Test) steps out in the Nufarm & Property Brokers Handicap (1400m). El Roca (Fastnet Rock) six-year-old Martell has now won seven of his 26 starts and Tyler is understandably bullish about his chances on Sunday. “He’s a good horse and Jim Collett did a great job with him. The wet track’s not going to hurt, it’s a winnable race for him again,” he said. “It’s still the same ownership group and you couldn’t get a better horse to work with, he’s fitted in well and we’re very pleased to have him.”

HK: Ka Ying Rising primed for Everest mission after Sha Tin send-off

David Hayes said no stone has been left unturned in the preparation of his stable star Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) as he galloped at Sha Tin on Friday ahead of his trip to Australia to tackle the world’s richest turf race, The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m). In his final workout on the grass before leaving Hong Kong, the world’s top-rated sprinter clocked 56.9s over 800 metres – completing the final 400 metres in 23.6s – in a showing that his Australian handler called “a good piece of work”. “He looked like he probably finished off [the final 200 metres] in about 11.5 [seconds], doing it very easy. And when he came back, he didn’t blow a candle out,” Hayes said. “We weighed him and he’s thriving. He’s at about 1,164 [pounds] this morning, and he raced [in the Class 1 HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup Handicap] at around 1,150, so that’s a good sign. They normally drop about ten pounds when they travel, so he’ll be right on his winning weight when he gets there.” Ka Ying Rising, Hong Kong’s reigning Horse of the Year, is being kept in quarantine ahead of his departure for Sydney on Sunday. The five-year-old is a winner of his last 13 races, including four Group 1 victories, but will compete overseas for the first time. For regular rider Zac Purton, it’s been a long road to the Sydney showdown. “It’s been a big build-up – nearly 11 months in the making, really. So, it’s been a topic of discussion for a long time now,” said the eight-time Hong Kong champion jockey. “It’s exciting to go down there, obviously, back to Australia and Sydney’s sort of where I’m from. There’s going to be a lot of people going down there with the horse.”

International

First for Nando Parrado

Chairmanfourtimes (2 c ex Occupation by Dragon Pulse) became the first stakes winner for Irish National Stud stallion Nando Parrado (Kodiac) when taking out Friday’s Harry Roseberry Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Ayr. Ridden by Oisin McSweeney for trainer Adrian Keatley, the juvenile colt kept on strongly to lead inside the final 100 yards to beat Our Cody (Kodi Bear) by a half-length. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Arduis Invicta (Invincible Army) in third. Having previously changed hands on two occasions, Chairmanfourtimes last sold to Dan Astbury, Andy Finneran and Keatley Racing for £50,000 at this year’s Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale. A half-brother to winner Lovely Spirit (Invincible Spirit), he is out of the unraced Dragon Pulse (Kyllachy) mare Occupation, herself a half-sister to three-time Australian stakes winner Hawk Island (Hawk Wing), who was also runner-up in both the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m). Nando Parrado stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €6,000 (approx. AU$10,700).

UK: Beautiful Diamond back to her best at Ayr

A return to Ayr racecourse saw the Karl Burke-trained Beautiful Diamond (4 f Twilight Son - Babylon Lane by Lethal Force) get back to something like her best form as she readily scored in the Arran Scottish Sprint Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) on Friday. Having won both of her previous starts at the track, with both coming in Listed affairs, the four-year-old daughter of Twilight Son (Kyllachy) stretched that unbeaten course record to three as she defeated Star Of Mehmas (Mehmas) by two and a half lengths under Clifford Lee. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Rhyme Dust (Sergei Prokofiev) in third.

US: Keeneland September Sale trade passes US$500 million

An already record-breaking Keeneland September Yearling Sale hit another milestone on Thursday as cumulative through-the-ring sales for the 12-session auction topped US$500,000,000 (approx. AU$758.23 million) for the first time. The action was led by a Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) colt who sold for US$480,000 (approx. AU$727,900) – another record price for session ten – to agent Chad Schumer on behalf of racing entity KGS. Consigned by Ashview Farm, he is out of stakes winner Introduced (El Padrino), and from the family of Grade 2 winner Who Did It And Run (Polish Numbers). Since the sale began on September 8, Keeneland has cumulatively sold 2,373 yearlings through the ring for US$500,230,000 (approx. AU$758,57 million), for an average of US$210,801 (approx. AU$319,670) and a median of US$120,000 (approx. AU$181,980). The total is 23 per cent above the US$405,519,500 from the corresponding period last year when 2,326 horses sold. The average has risen 21 per cent from US$174,342 in 2024, while the median is 15 per cent higher than US$95,000.
