Prominent industry figures have expressed alarm over Racing NSW’s (RNSW) show-cause notice against the Australian Turf Club (ATC), with some perceiving an attempt to revive the sale of Rosehill, and one fearing a bid by RNSW to seize total control of the sport in the state, in a Hong Kong-style scenario.

Thoroughbred Breeders NSW president Hamish Esplin said the move illustrated the sport was “at a crucial juncture” some ten years in the making, and which highlighted the need for industry stakeholders to make submissions to the state government’s imminent review into the Thoroughbred Racing Act.

Four months after ATC members voted down the controversial push to sell Rosehill for property development worth an estimated $5 billion, RNSW on Friday issued the notice to the ATC to show it cause why an administrator should not be appointed to replace the club’s board.

Reports in Sydney newspapers said the notice was served owing to concerns over the club’s financial situation.

The notice was served one day after Ben Bayot and Natalie Hewson resigned from the ATC board on Thursday evening, and four days after the club sacked its chief executive Matt Galanos.

Bayot and Hewson’s departures leave four directors on the ATC board: Tim Hale SC, the chairman appointed after Peter McGauran’s resignation from that post in July in the wake of the botched initial attempt to sell Rosehill; vice-chair Caroline Searcy, plus directors David McGrath and Annette English. Steve McMahon is interim CEO.

Racing and breeding figures contacted by ANZ expressed confidence the ATC would successfully show an administrator should not be appointed - a position barrister Hale, a member of the club’s property and infrastructure committee, appeared to support in a statement on Friday after the show-cause notice was served by Peter V’landys’ RNSW.

“The ATC will cooperate with this process and work with Racing NSW to maintain the Club’s ongoing financial position and sustainability,” Hale said.

“The process will help our long-term viability, but I'd like to emphasise that the ATC remains asset-rich, resilient, and strong.”

News of the show-cause notice sent shockwaves through the industry on the weekend, and was a key point of discussions among racegoers at Randwick on Saturday.

Sydney’s biggest trainer, Chris Waller, responded with an impassioned call for clarity from RNSW.

“We are all in the same industry,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald. “The ATC put on a great show 52 weeks of the year and, yes, they can do some things better, but they need some support.

What's On

“And everybody knows that the funding model has changed, and they don’t get as much money, and Racing NSW gets a lot of money now. Everybody knows that, so that needs to be publicly addressed.”

Tim Hale (Credit: ATC)

The timing of the notice raised eyebrows, not only coming a day after two ATC board resignations and five months after the Rosehill sale was rejected by club members, but also on the eve of day one of Randwick’s Everest carnival, and with the NSW parliament’s review of the Thoroughbred Racing Act to begin next month.

However, that review, prompted by the Rosehill sale attempt, will not investigate funding distribution from RNSW to clubs, or that the regulator operates independent of government - caveats detailed in the review’s terms of reference.

But while some industry figures contacted by ANZ suspected political overtones in the show-cause move, some at least felt that on the financial side, the ATC was in a sound enough position to repel any attempt to appoint an administrator.

The club reportedly has a $30 million debt due for repayment to the Commonwealth Bank by October, 2026.

It also owes RNSW $145 million - but that is in the form of a non-interest accruing loan which is only repayable if the club sells a major asset.

Some industry stakeholders fear that if an administrator is appointed - which would take away the right for members to make decisions on the club by way of a vote - it might order the sale of Rosehill. One consequence of that would be forcing the ATC paying RNSW back the $145 million.

In its 2023-24 annual report, the club listed net assets of $303 million.

Experienced and respected breeder Brian Nutt, owner of the Hunter Valley’s Attunga Stud and a man well versed in racing operation as a former vice-president of Scone Race Club, said it was “not a fait accompli” that the ATC would go into administration.

Saying he was “very passionate about the industry but very concerned about the direction in which it is heading”, Nutt said it would be unfair to place the ATC into administration when its board had only weeks ago undergone significant change, with Hale and Searcy taking up their positions on July 21.

“The ATC has just been issued with the show-cause notice, to which it has to respond,” Nutt told ANZ News. “I have no doubt that those four directors will cooperate with the show cause notice and have a very strong defence.

“One has to consider, the ATC is very much asset-rich. I think to place a club into administration when it is asset-rich, and when there is a changing of the guard to one that has very little time to improve what they’ve basically inherited from the last couple of years - and I refer specifically to the botched sale of Rosehill - whilst the intervention of the regulator is not unexpected, I’m very confident the show cause notice will be met to the regulator’s satisfaction.

“The club can show how asset-rich they are, show part of a strategic plan that would include some partial sale of existing assets.”

Nutt added: “It seems to me the crux of the matter is the $30 million loan to the Commonwealth Bank, because the loan of $145 million to the regulator … the agreement has always been that they are non-interest bearing loans and would only be called in if the ATC sold significant assets.”

The Attunga owner said while he was “concerned that this show-cause notice has happened”, he was optimistic the ATC could ward off administration.

“It would be very difficult to prove any negligence of governance in this very short period after the departure of McGauran and prior governance, which Bayot and Hewson were part of,” he said.

Nutt said he suspected a move to revive the sale of Rosehill was involved in the show-cause notice.

“When the Rosehill vote was defeated, I don’t think anyone thought that was going to be the end of the story,” he said.

“A lot of participants thought there would be some sort of intervention from the regulator. And it’s probably taken a couple of events to give the regulator the so-called justification to intervene.

“Perhaps the departure of the CEO and subsequent surprise resignations of two directors, in addition to the departure of Peter McGauran, would appear to be - in inverted commas - justification for the regulator to intervene, even though the core directors who are left, Hale, Siercy, McGrath and English are more than capable of taking this club forward.”

Esplin, a lawyer by profession, said if the show-cause notice was a push to refloat the sale of Rosehill, it was doubtful it would succeed.

“Given the timing, it’d be hard to say it [the Rosehill sale] isn’t still on the table, but how that works I don’t know,” Esplin told ANZ.

“But an administrator is subject to fiduciary duties. They can’t just come in and do whatever they like. They still have to act in the interests of the stakeholders.

“In this instance, it would be remarkable for an administrator to come into a registered club, and say, ‘I get to disregard the views of the stakeholders which were only given in a vote three months prior’.”

Esplin said “that wouldn’t stand up to scrutiny” if appeals were lodged with courts or government.

Of greater concern to Esplin was the show-cause notice handed to the largest club in NSW could be a move towards giving RNSW total control of the sport in the state.

Hamish Esplin (Credit: TBNSW)

He said this illustrated that racing in NSW, and its entwined breeding industry, was at a “crucial juncture” - highlighting the need of stakeholders to lodge depositions to the parliamentary review of the Thoroughbred Racing Act, which begins taking submissions next month.

“What we are seeing here is a show-cause notice for the only race club in Sydney - asset-rich but cash poor, it says in the media,” Esplin said.

“But what’s the end-game of that show-cause hearing? If the club is placed into administration, what does that mean for the centralisation of power for this sport, except to say it’s going to end up with Racing NSW?

“And this comes at a time when the very Act which empowers Racing NSW is under scrutiny, but not as to whether it should operate independently of the NSW Government.”

Asked to comment on Esplin’s assertions, V’landys said only that RNSW would issue a statement on the show-cause notice on Monday, adding, “Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation”.

Esplin categorised the show-cause notice as part of a bigger picture of attempts by RNSW to “exert more dominance over the industry”, saying he and others had warned earlier moves were “the thin edge of the wedge”.

“It started with the unilateral extension of [RNSW] directors’ terms, not once, but twice and then a third time,” he said.

“It came down to a change in the nature of the way that licensed persons such as trainers and vets could operate in the industry.

“It got down to the pulling of bonus structures from breeders, such as when we lost our mares’ bonus.

“It then went to an examination of the genesis of the idea of selling Rosehill.

“That led to a government inquiry into that issue. That inquiry raised numerous issues not only about the way in which the idea of the sale of Rosehill started, and whether it was really an idea instigated by Racing NSW, to a series of recommendations by that same inquiry, which now includes a full scale examination of the very Act which empowers that regulator.”

Esplin added: “This thin edge of the wedge is starting to get thick.

“And the thick part is we will end up with a sport under the sole control of the racing regulator in NSW. That is where this end-game goes, in my view.”

Esplin added that scenario would lead NSW down a wholly unsuitable path in which it would become a racing jurisdiction like Hong Kong.

“It has been said, and I share the view, that there is a very real sense that the sport in NSW is being Hong Kongified, in that you do not have a separation between regulator and the club, and the regulator controls absolutely everything,” he said.

“In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club controls everything, including the marketing and the revenue.

“But there’s a stark difference between Hong Kong and Australia. We have a breeding industry. We’re an industry that starts organically.

“If this sport is headed down a path whereby the racing regulator thinks it can control all the assets of a club, and the biggest club, which it looks like it wants to do … if the end-game of this whole process is to end up with one regulator who controls all the assets in this state, then we are at a very, very sharp precipice.

“And in my personal opinion, there has not been a good enough performance by that regulator to date to justify that outcome.”

Esplin stressed that the parliamentary review of the Thoroughbred Racing Act was an opportunity for stakeholders to express their views on how the sport in the state was run.

He said the Act needed an overhaul partly because having been written in 1996, it did not reflect subsequent innovations affecting industry funding.

“When this Act was written, there was no race fields legislation, no point of consumption tax, no co-mingling of international pools, no internet wagering,” he said.

“So I say, in very stark words, that the opportunity for the industry to say how the sport should be governed is right now, in this parliamentary review into the Act.”

Nutt concurred, noting funding distributor RNSW had become extremely wealthy thanks to innovations in V’landys’ 21-year tenure as CEO such as the 2008 race fields legislation, which makes it an offence to publish NSW race fields unless approved by the regulator, and compels those publishing to pay fees.

“Whilst the regulator will argue the funding model that’s in existence is highly satisfactory, the big difference is that when the original Act was put in place, the regulator didn’t have the function of turning on and turning off the taps,” Nutt said.

“Now it has all that power since race field legislation. I take my hat off to Mr V’landys for getting that through, but all the money that has been contributed by corporate bookmakers goes straight to Racing NSW, and they can do as they see fit with that money.

“And there’s no coincidence why a lot of race clubs throughout NSW - not only the ATC - are struggling, and it’s because of an inadequate funding model where people tend to have to go to Racing NSW cap-in-hand.”

Sentimental Hero scores in Boulder Cup

The Peter Fernie-trained Sentimental Hero (8 g Al Maher - Sentimental Star by More Than Ready) captured his second stakes win on Sunday when landing the Boulder Cup (Listed, 2100m) at Kalgoorlie. Ridden by Lucy Fiore, the eight-year-old gelding ran out a 2.9 lengths winner over Starry Heights (Al Maher) with a further 1.6 lengths back to Ryewood (Redwood) in third. Sunday’s victory added to Sentimental Hero’s win in last year’s A.J. Scahill Cup (Listed, 2100m).

Oaks set for After Summer

The Dom Sutton-trained After Summer (The Autumn Sun) is heading for a date with November's VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) after she made all to land the Oaks Preview (1800m) at Flemington on Sunday. Sent off as a $14 chance in the 12-runner field, the three-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) defeated Seychelles (Proisir) by a length and a half with a further 0.1 lengths back to Classic Gem (Maurice) in third. "They were going to crawl and she was up on the bridle, so he did the right thing in letting her stride a little bit," Sutton said. "She got a very soft time in front and when he asked for at the top of the straight, she never looked like getting beaten. We're still a long way out so we'll just assess how she comes through today. I'd say it'd be more like having a trial than having a race with the speeds that they went, so she doesn't look like she's had a tough run. We'll get her home and plot a path, and if she takes us there, then great. If not, then we'll put her away and save it for autumn."

Hunter Derby dreaming with Autumn Mystery

Mornington-based Rory Hunter is another trainer who is dreaming of Classic success after his The Autumn Sun gelding Autumn Mystery narrowly scored in the Victoria Derby Preview (1800m) at Flemington on Sunday. Ridden by Blake Shinn, the three-year-old took the rise to 1800 metres in his stride as he lunged late to deny Engine Of War (Circus Maximus) by 0.1 lengths with the same distance back to Options (Impending) in third. "What a stage to do it on," Hunter said. "It's been an incredible journey to this horse. We've believed in him from day one, and it's just great for it to finally come off. I'm rapt, especially with the whole team around us and especially the owners, they've knocked back some quite substantial offers for him along the way and give a young trainer like myself a go. I can't thank them enough." Hunter said Autumn Mystery would be on a journey towards the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on November 1 all being well. "That'd be the ultimate dream but we'll just see how he pulls up the next few days," Hunter said. "I think he's got a very big future, but I'd say we'll be heading that way at this stage."

Rosberg to have a look at Flemington

Clinton McDonald's exciting debut winner Rosberg (Deep Field) will have a look down the Flemington straight this week as the colt prepares to tackle the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at the track on October 4. The son of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) is on a path towards the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on November 1 after impressing with a half-length victory in the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at The Valley on September 6 - the colt's debut outing. "It will be good for the horse and the punters to see him down the straight before he goes there," McDonald said. "It's important, not just for him, but every horse. It's big prize-money on offer and there’s a lot of money invested on the punt. He's a colt who doesn't leave anything in the feed bin, carries good condition and we just need to stay on top of him. The more that we do with a horse, especially one like him who is so laid-back, they keep learning, and we have to speed up the process. He’s a little bit behind in race starts as to the opposition he will be facing, so the more we do with him, and teach him, the better he will be for it."

No Manikato for War Machine

June's Stradbroke Handicap winner War Machine (Harry Angel) will not line up in Friday's Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley after suffering an untimely foot abscess. The Ben, JD and Will Hayes-trained five-year-old is being targeted at gaining a slot in next month's The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) and, despite this setback, the brothers are still hopeful of getting to that point. "He got a very minor foot abscess so he missed a week, which put us on the back foot, so he'll probably run now in the Gilgai," Ben Hayes told Racing.com. "He'll run Turnbull Day [October 4] at Flemington or in Sydney in the Premiere [Stakes], so he'll be dual accepted that day and we'll choose which will be the best race for him. We were very happy with him, he was going great. He's trialing again next Thursday and then he should be spot on for the straight race or up in Sydney." Meanwhile, the stable's Group 1 hopeful Evaporate (Per Incanto) is set to return after having suffered a small setback following his first-up fifth in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). "Evaporate, he runs next week in the Sandown Stakes," Hayes said. "He got a little virus and we needed to back off him but he had a trial [at Flemington] on Friday and he's all back on track."

Mr Brightside to miss Feehan

Meanwhile, Team Hayes revealed that their stable star Mr Brightside (Bullbars) is unlikely to take on Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) and Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) at The Valley in Friday night's Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), with connections preferring to concentrate on his ultimate spring goal in Sydney next month. The eight-year-old gelding has reportedly pulled up well from his third Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) win, and is heading for the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) next - a race he was narrowly beaten in 2023. "He pulled up great but a couple of years ago we went straight into the King Charles and we just got beaten, so we'll follow that recipe," Ben Hayes told Racing.com. "He's got a great record there [Randwick mile] and he's got five weeks to it. He'll trial on the same day in Sydney as Ka Ying Rising on the 7th [of October] and then go to the King Charles ready to turn in his best."

Treasurethe Moment set for Feehan

Treasurethe Moment is headed for the Feehan Stakes at The Valley on Friday night, with the Matt Laurie-trained four-year-old having overcome the effects of a bout of colic earlier this month. "She had a nice gallop on Thursday and we were pleased with that workout," Laurie told Racing.com. "She will have another one either Monday or Tuesday and we'll be away, but she seems fine. I just hope she [Pride Of Jenni] doesn't go out three furlongs in front of everything. But it's the right race for Treasure and obviously the right race for their horse to kick off in. I'm pleased with her and if anything it gives her a good look at the Valley and that won't be a bad thing. I did consider it [having a gallop] but she's not the biggest filly and driving up there from the [Mornington] Peninsula through peak hour, like its extra stress that she doesn't really need. She's pretty professional and I think we'll chance this one that she will be able to adapt quickly."

Cassar celebrates first Flemington winner

Kyneton-based trainer Charles Cassar savoured an emotional moment on Sunday when Per Sempre (Per Incanto) provided him with his first winner at Flemington. The six-year-old mare was sent off a $21 chance in the Benchmark 70 (1100m) but knuckled down well to beat Sun Setting (Pierata) by 0.8 lengths under Brad Rawiller. "It's fantastic," Cassar told Racing.com. "We've won on every other metro track; we've probably only had four or five runners here. It's really good to get one. She's matured a bit and we had a lot of feet trouble with her, we've got them right now. She's had no luck her past two starts, she probably could've won both of them. Brad gave her a peach of a ride and the team at home have done a great job with her."

Rennie claims special Duke Of Gloucester success

There was no disguising what winning Sunday’s time-honoured Duke Of Gloucester Cup (2200m) meant to amateur rider Caitlin Rennie as she crossed the line victorious aboard Joejoeccini (Puccini). The 21-year-old had partnered the Sam Mynott-trained gelding in a similar event at Te Aroha at the end of August when finishing into third, and chasing her first success in the saddle, her mount was well-backed closing second favourite behind Autumn Beauty (The Autumn Sun). Rennie allowed Joejoeccini to stride forward from the gate and sat outside the leader in Leprekhan (Mongolian Khan) early, before easing back in the one-one alongside Carignan (Roc De Cambes). The pace was genuine along the back straight and there were challengers lined across the track as they turned for home, with Joejoeccini and Rennie hitting the front early. In A Pickle (Preferment) and series leader Abhay Sessa looked the big danger coming through the centre and Smokin Mo (Complacent) was powering down the outside, but Rennie lifted her charge in the shadows of the post, pumping her fist in the air as they took the iconic event by half-a-length. “I couldn’t be more thrilled, it’s super special to have Mum and Dad here today, which is probably the most important thing,” Rennie said. “Sam [Mynott, trainer] has supported me from the minute I got there, she set this horse up for this race and it’s a massive honour to be able to pull it off for her.”

Well Written bursts into Guineas contention

The Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 1400m) was expected to be the weekend’s key pointer for the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), but a spectacular performance on the Ellerslie undercard had its own impact on fixed-odds betting for the Christchurch classic. First-starter Well Written (Written Tycoon) blitzed a highly rated maiden field by three lengths in Saturday’s Join TAB Racing Club (1200m). The TAB immediately slashed her from $61 into $14 for the 1,000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 8. “We’ve always rated her highly and made the next payment for the 1,000 Guineas even though she was unraced at the time,” trainer Stephen Marsh said. “We’ll have to look at the Soliloquy Stakes now and maybe even get her down south. She looks top-drawer.” Well Written dashed to the lead at the 300-metre mark and soon drew clear under Matt Cartwright despite gawking around for most of the home straight. She beat Navy Ensign (U S Navy Flag) by three lengths, with another 1.3 lengths back to Argo (Almanzor) in third. “She’s got a lot of ability,” Cartwright said. “She jumped awkwardly, but then we ended up getting a lovely run. They went awfully slow, so I had to keep her in rhythm and get her out and give her every chance. She quickened up very well. She was green late, but she’s a good horse. She definitely has black type in her future.”

Comedy all business at Trentham

Improving stayer Comedy (Mongolian Khan) knocked off a Rating 75 victory at just the second time of asking with an impressive performance at Trentham on Saturday. The Harvey Wilson-trained seven-year-old was among the better-backed runners in the Manawatu Toyota and John Turkington Forestry LTD 2100 (2100m), but punters were picking a two-horse race between New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) hopefuls McKhan (Mongolian Khan) and Just Charlie (Zed), closing at $3.50 and $3.30 respectively. Continuing his association with in-form apprentice jockey Liam Kauri, Comedy jumped well from barrier three and kept finding in the closing stages to beat So Call Me (Sweynesse) by 0.8 lengths. “He was in the perfect position, he’s better to be out a little bit and we were happy at the top of the straight,” Wilson said. “He does a bit around the farm, he’s schooled a couple of times with Nicole Sinclair and he’s galloped well lately. Ann looks after him, I just do what I’m told and it works very well.”

Six for Phoenix Of Spain

Caballo De Mar (4 g ex Oberyn by Holy Roman Emperor) became the sixth individual stakes winner for Irish National Stud stallion Phoenix Of Spain (Lope De Vega) when scoring in Sunday’s German St Leger (Gr 3, 2800m) at Cologne. Ridden by Adrie de Vries, the George Scott-trained four-year-old picked up the lead entering the final furlong and kept on well to beat Waldnebel (Reliable Man) by two and a three-quarter lengths. There was a further length back to the odds-on favourite Lordano (Adlerflug) in third. Bred by Barouche Stud, Caballo De Mar first passed through the sales ring for €21,000 when selling to Melchior Bloodstock at the 2021 Goffs November Foal Sale before then being re-sold to J S Bloodstock and George Scott Racing for €33,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale the following year. Owned by Victorious Racing, he is a half-brother to winner Robayera (Time Test) being out of the winning Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) mare Oberyn, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Circassian (Groom Dancer). Phoenix Of Spain stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$17,810).

US: Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale breaks records

Keeneland's September Yearling Sale wrapped up on Saturday with the largest aggregate ever realised at a worldwide thoroughbred auction. Over 12 sessions, the sale rewrote records by turning over 3,070 horses for a total of US$531.5 million (approx. AU$805.99 million). This included 56 yearlings bringing seven figures, besting the previous record of 40 set in 2005 and led by a US$3.3 million (approx. AU$5 million) Gun Runner (Candy Ride) colt purchased by MV Magnier, Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm and Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. The US$510,544,900 (approx. AU$774.22 million) of through-the-ring sales was 24 per cent higher than last year’s US$411,749,500. The combined total, including private sales afterwards, tops the previous record gross of nearly US$428 million from 2024. For the fifth year in a row, a record cumulative average of US$175,807 (approx. AU$266,600) was established. The average increased 17 per cent over last year’s previous record US$150,548. The median of US$80,000 (approx. AU$121,320) rose 14 per cent over last year’s previous record US$70,000. Mike Repole’s Repole Stable was leading buyer, acquiring 33 horses for US$14,155,000 (approx. AU$21.46 million). Taylor Made Sales Agency was the leading consignor at the September Sale for the 26th year since 1988, selling 333 yearlings for an all-time consignor record of US$68,515,000 (approx. AU$103.9 million). Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) was the September Sale’s leading sire by total sales. A total of 55 yearlings by the stallion sold for $38.58 million (approx. AU$58.5 million). During Saturday’s final session, Keeneland sold 230 yearlings for US$3,600,200 (approx. AU$5.45 million), up 35 per cent from last year, with the average of US$15,653 (approx. AU$23,740) being 19 per cent up, while the median dipped ten per cent from US$10,000 to US$9,000 (approx. AU$13,650).

Third for McKinzie

The John Shirreffs-trained Baeza (3 c ex Puca by Big Brown) became the third individual Grade 1 winner and seventh individual stakes winner for McKinzie (Street Sense) when landing the Pennsylvania Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at Parx on Saturday. Ridden by Hector Berrios, the three-year-old colt defeated Magnitude (Not This Time) by two and a quarter lengths with a further two lengths back to Goal Oriented (Not This Time) in third. Bred by Grandview Equine, Baeza was purchased by Mayberry Farm for US$1.2 million at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is raced by C R K Stable LLC and his breeder. Out of the stakes-winning mare Puca (Big Brown), Baeza is a half-brother to Grade 1 winners Mage (Good Magic) and Dornoch (Good Magic). McKinzie stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Gainesway Farm for a fee of US$75,000 (approx. AU$113,730).

17 for Quality Road

Lane’s End Farm stallion Quality Road (Elusive Quality) supplied his 17th individual top-level winner on Saturday when Clicquot (3 f ex Royal Obsession by Tapit) scored in the Cotillion Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Parx. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr for trainer Brendan Walsh, the three-year-old filly narrowly defeated Dry Powder (Gun Runner) by a neck with a further head back to Ourdaydreaminggirl (Instagrand) in third. Out of the Grade 2-placed Tapit (Pulpit) mare Royal Obsession, Clicquot is a half-sister to the stakes-placed winner Silver Ticket (Curlin). Quality Road stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$150,000 (approx. AU$227,470).

15 for Vekoma

Spendthrift Farm stallion Vekoma (Candy Ride) sired his 15th individual stakes winner on Saturday when Mad House (3 g ex Stifled Heiress by Munnings) scored in the Gallant Bob Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Parx. Ridden by Paco Lopez for trainer David Van Winkle, the three-year-old gelding ran out a two and three-quarter lengths winner over Gateskeeper (Instagrand) with a further half-length back to Fire Pit (Cairo Prince) in third. Bred by Jean White, Wavertree Farm and Sgv Thoroughbreds, Mad House was purchased by his owner James Thares for US$47,000 at the 2024 Ocala Spring Two-Year-Old Sale. Out of the unraced Munnings (Speightstown) mare Stifled Heiress, he is a half-brother to the winner Singsational (Audible). Lane’s End Farm stallion Union Rags (Dixie Union) was represented by his 38th individual stakes winner on Saturday when the Bill Mott-trained Ragtime (3 f ex Burmilla by Storm Cat) scored in the Dogwood Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Churchill Downs. Ridden by Junior Alvarado, the three-year-old filly beat Strong State (Tom’s D’Etat) by two and a quarter lengths with a further half-length back to the third-placed Delightful Claire (Thousand Words). Bred and raced by Godolphin, Ragtime is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Snowbell (Tapit) and the stakes-placed winner Mrs Norris (Bernardini), being out of the Grade 2-winning mare Burmilla (Storm Cat). Union Rags stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$10,000 (approx. AU$15,160).

61 for Twirling Candy

Ready For Candy (3 f ex Enoree by More Than Ready) provided Lane’s End Farm stallion Twirling Candy (Candy Ride) with his 61st individual stakes winner on Saturday when landing the Winter Memories Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Belmont At The Big A. Trained by Philip Antonacci and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr, the three-year-old filly defeated Paradise City (McKinzie) by a nose with a further two lengths back to Decadent (Girvin) in third. Out of the stakes-placed More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Enoree, Ready For Candy is a half-sister to winners Tiburon (Good Magic) and Bolt Enoree (Bold D’Oro). Twirling Candy stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$60,000 (approx. AU$90,900).

45 for Kantharos

Cool Kiss (5 g ex Hot Kiss by Philanthropist) became the 45th individual stakes winner for Hill ‘N Dale Farms stallion Kantharos (Lion Heart) when scoring in Saturday’s Durham Cup Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Woodbine. Ridden by Sahin Civaci for trainer Martin Drexler, the five-year-old gelding narrowly denied Dresden Row (Lord Nelson) by a neck with a further four and a half lengths back to Paramount Prince (Society’s Chairman) in third. Out of the stakes-winning mare Hot Kiss (Philanthropist), Cool Kiss is a half-brother to winners Repeat The Heat (Silent Name) and One Last Kiss (Sky Mesa). Kantharos stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$12,500 (approx. AU$18,960).

Bowman at the double as Fownes-Wong partnership flourishes

An abridged Sha Tin race meeting on Sunday was cut short due to the deterioration of the track in torrential rain, but not before Hugh Bowman secured an imposing double that took him to five wins for the season.

The Australian got off to the best possible start after landing the opener in yielding conditions, the Class 5 Kowloon Tsai Handicap (1800m), aboard Hakka Radiance (Massaat) for trainer Danny Shum, who moved level with Caspar Fownes at the top of the trainers’ rankings.

Five-year-old Hakka Radiance held on gamely in driving rain under a late challenge from Yeaboi (Belardo) to secure his first win in Hong Kong.

“I was able to get him into a nice flowing rhythm and he appreciated the softer conditions, too,” Bowman said. “He really did let go on that softer ground, but it was vital: the fact he was able to get into a good, consistent gait throughout the race.”

The second leg of his double was a contender for ride of the day as the 45-year-old emerged from the back of the field, swinging wide on Solid Win (Starspangledbanner) before blazing through the centre of the track to take the Class 4 Kowloon Bay Handicap (1400m) by a length after a final-50 metre tussle with The Heir (Impending) under Vincent Ho. It represented a first win of the season for trainer Ricky Yiu.

“I didn't expect to be quite so far back,” Bowman said. “But if I didn't do that, I was going to be wide and covering a lot of ground.

“When he started to come into it, he picked up with quite a bit of purpose and I went out to the middle of the track where there was some fresh ground – that wasn't the plan, it just unfolded – and he went to the line with a bit of authority. So two good winners.”

Trainer Cody Mo picked up a double of his own when Motor (Fastnet Rock) claimed the Class 4 Sam Shing Handicap (1200m) smartly under Derek Leung, who inched to 499 Hong Kong winners.

A front-running ride delivered Motor’s first win from six starts. After coming off Mazing Grace’s (Starspangledbanner) heels with 250 metres to go, he powered past him and landed the win by a length-and-a-half from Winning Champion (Alabama Express).

“This horse was bred in Ireland, so the [wet] track is good for him,” Mo said. “For this season, I put the blinkers on and he's more focussed. He has improved a lot and I hope he can keep going.”

Mo’s second win came courtesy of Emblazon (Zoustar), who rattled home in the Class 4 Yi O Handicap (1200m), with Jerry Chau getting off the mark for the campaign in Hong Kong.

The burgeoning partnership of Fownes and Ellis Wong continued to flourish when the pair combined with Sky Trust (So You Think) to scoop the feature race, the Class 3 KPMG 80th Anniversary Cup Handicap (1200m).

Well-positioned in the slipstream of early leader Wonderstar (Starspangledbanner), Wong shifted Sky Trust out at the 300-metre mark and quickly put a length on his rival.

“His work had been good,” Fownes said. “Good preparation leading into the race and obviously, he’s handled the wet conditions today, that’s been very beneficial to him.

“Ellis put him in a beautiful position; the horse did the rest, so it was good,” he said. “He's a very versatile horse, and if you train them right, you can run them over shorter distances.”

An imperious showing from Precision Goal (Tavistock) gave David Hayes his fourth winner of the season in the Class 4 Ting Kau Handicap (1650m, dirt), with Luke Ferraris delivering a fine front-running performance on the son of Tavistock (Montjeu).

Good Good (Savabeel) provided a pleasant surprise for John Size and Brenton Avdulla when he landed the Class 4 Kau To Shan Handicap (1600m) at 13/1. After making all, the five-year-old son of Savabeel (Zabeel) was forced to dig deep for his scalp in the final 200 metres during a spirited battle with the well-fancied Pearl of Pang’s (Ardrossan).

Mojave Desert (I Am Invincible) backed up a third-place finish last week for Mark Newnham perfectly in the Class 3 Pat Sin Leng Handicap (1650m, dirt). Given every chance after a patient steer stalking the leaders along the rail under Andrea Atzeni, he strode clear to salute by two lengths from Endeared (Dark Angel), punching on in second. New Forest (Justify) made it two in the first three for Newnham.

“He’s a good back-up horse because he does well in between,” Newnham said. “He’s versatile enough distance-wise on the all-weather, and he loves that stalking position from the inside barrier.

“He’s been a good horse since he joined the stable, and there are more wins in him, especially on this surface,” he added. “He ran well on Happy Valley for me another time, so I’m not saying he’s just going to race on the all-weather, but while his form’s this good, I’ll keep him there.”

The Happy Valley race meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been cancelled because of safety considerations with the approach of Super Typhoon Ragasa.
