Coolmore’s star stallion Wootton Bassett dies aged 17

Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), one of the world’s hottest sires, has died unexpectedly at the age of 17. His premature death while on shuttle duty in Australia was announced on Coolmore’s social media channels in a post that stated the horse suffered from “acute pneumonia which deteriorated rapidly.”

What's On

The post continued: “Despite round-the-clock care from a dedicated team of vets, overseen by Dr Nathan Slovis from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Kentucky, he was unable to be saved.”

The son of Iffraaj (Zafonic) was covering his fifth book of mares in Australia where he was standing for a record fee of $385,000 (inc GST).

His spell in Australia had begun to see him exert his considerable influence on the global stage, with his debut Australian-bred crop containing Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Wodeton, who will shoot for Group 1 glory this weekend in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill. His southern hemisphere-bred winner count stands at 16 winners from 48 starters.

His two sons at stud in Australasia are headed by Almanzor, sire of Australian Group 1-winning pair Circle Of Fire and Manzoice, while Swettenham Stud also stand his top-flight producing son Wooded, whose first southern hemisphere-bred runners will hit the tracks later this season.

The stallion’s demise is a crushing blow for both Coolmore and the wider global bloodstock industry, and brings an end to a truly remarkable rags to riches tale.

Wootton Bassett was bred by Laundry Cottage Stud Farm when Melba and Colin Bryce sent their mare Balladonia (Primo Dominie) to be covered by Darley’s Kildangan Stud resident and former shuttler Iffraaj in 2007. The colt resulting from that mating was sold to bloodstock agent Bobby O’Ryan for £46,000 at the Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sale.

Sent into training with Richard Fahey for owners Frank Brady and The Cosmic Cases, Wootton Bassett rocketed through an unbeaten five-race juvenile campaign. His first season in training culminated with a wide-margin victory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m). That proved to be his final success as he was unable to add to his tally in four outings at three.

In 2012, Wootton Bassett was introduced at Haras d'Etreham. Despite an introductory fee of just €6,000, French breeders gave the horse a lukewarm reception, with a debut book numbering just 47 mares.

His fee fell to €5,000 the following year, when he covered only 29 mares, and again to €4,000 in years three and four. That inauspicious start to life at stud gave little indication of what would come next.

A debut crop of 23 foals would spell disaster for most stallions, but a bonafide champion emerged from within that number in the shape of Almanzor. He was crowned the leading three-year-old in Europe after sweeping through the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m), Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) and the Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) of 2016.

Almanzor was not the only star to come from Wootton Bassett’s smaller, early crops, with Group 1 performers Patascoy and Wootton emerging from his third and Audarya, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (Gr 1, 9.5f) and Prix Jean Romanet (Gr 1, 2000m), emanating from his fourth.

As the penny dropped that Wootton Bassett was something completely out of the ordinary, momentum began to build. He covered his first three-figure book in 2016, while still priced at just €6,000, and maintained those numbers as his fee rose to €20,000 in 2017 and then €40,000 in 2019.

Then, in August 2020, came the news that would set his stallion career on a stratospheric trajectory. Coolmore’s decision to purchase Wootton Bassett from Haras d’Etreham can’t have been cheap, but there was rarely a day when it did not look like money well spent.

His fee more than doubled to €100,000 for his first season in Ireland, and he was duly inundated with mares. His first Coolmore-conceived book numbered 234, and the resulting foals ripped up the rule book once they reached the racecourse.

That first Irish-bred crop yielded ten two-year-old Group winners, surpassing the previous record (seven) held jointly by Danehill (Danzig) and Galileo (Sadler’s Wells).

They included four Group 1 winners to boot, namely Camille Pissarro (Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere), Henri Matisse (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf), Tennessee Stud (Criterium de Saint-Cloud) and Twain (Criterium International).

Those names have continued to perform at three this season, with Camille Pissarro landing the Prix du Jockey Club and Henri Matisse claiming the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m). Those results, along with fellow Group 1 scorers Al Riffa, Sahlan and Whirl, have seen Wootton Bassett go over €2,000,000 clear in this year’s European sires’ title.

At the time of his death, his record stands at 127 stakes performers (71 of those stakes winners), giving him an impressive black type horses-to-runners strike rate of 15.7 per cent. Of those 127, 50 have struck in Group company, while 16 of those have won at the very highest level.

Needless to say, those results have only added to Wootton Bassett’s popularity. His current two-year-old crop, bred at a fee of €150,000, comes from a book of 245 mares. This cohort has already yielded 30 European winners, including the likes of Albert Einstein, Beautify, Composing, Constitution River and Puerto Rico.

Another member of this crop, the as yet unraced Poker, became the most expensive colt in European sales history when purchased by Amo Racing for 4,300,000gns at Book 1 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Alabama Lass set for Manikato

Alabama Lass (Credit: Racing Photos)

Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) is set for Friday night’s Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley after she pleased rider Craig Williams with a workout at the track on Monday. “I was really happy with her,” Williams told Racing.com. “She enjoyed it. It is a privilege to come out here in preparation for Friday’s Group 1 tilt. Megan [Winter], who has been entrusted with her care over here while Ken and Bev [Kelso, trainers] are back in New Zealand, is doing a really good job.” The filly finished second in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) first-up at The Valley earlier this month with Williams on board. “I have been on her a few times now after her first-up run since being here, so I am starting to understand her a lot more,” Williams said. “When I first got on her in the mounting yard she was quite full on and when I first rode her in work she was quite full on, and Megan gave me a few pointers with her and now I am really starting to understand her. I have got a really good relationship with her. She is getting on the track and doing things a lot nicer and straightforward for me, and I loved her work this morning.” Looking ahead to Saturday, Williams said Alabama Lass will be ideally suited to the 1200 metres. “The distance of 1200 metres on Friday is definitely in her wheelhouse,” he said. “When she resumed in the Moir it was her first time she had raced over 1000 metres and she acquitted herself really well. Probably a bit too well, she was a bit fresh and tried to overdo it. The 1200 metres she can really get into her rhythm and she will take a lot of running down the way she felt this morning.”

Manikato task for Rothfire

Trainer Rob Heathcote is hoping for a happier outcome on Saturday when his evergreen sprinter Rothfire (Rothesay) lines up in the Manikato Stakes. It was on the same date in 2020 that Rothfire broke down with a serious sesamoid injury when leading the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill. “A lesser horse would not have made it back to the track, but five years later he’s here,” Heathcote said. “I shudder to think how good he could have been if he had not shattered his fetlock in that Golden Rose. It’s been a challenge to get him this far, but the horse’s welfare always takes precedence, no matter the race. If he’s not right, he doesn’t run.” Rothfire galloped at The Valley on Monday under Blake Shinn. “Blake came in after riding him on Monday morning and said ‘thank goodness I don’t have to ride him every day’,” Heathcote said. “He’s strong, a very strong worker, and he was delighted with his work. He’s eight years old but he doesn’t know it … he’s only had 30-odd races because of his lifetime of issues, but he’s here and he’s sound.” Rothfire’s first-up run in the Moir did not go to plan, finishing ninth, but Heathcote expects improvement. “I wish we had that race over again,” he said. “He loves The Valley, and he’s run second in this race before [in 2022]. What a memory that night was … but he came back the next day and ran second and I would take that if you were offering it now. Lady Shenandoah, she’s got the form on the board and is trained by the best trainer in the country and will be ridden by the best jockey, but my old lad will be hard to beat.”

Stutt Stakes for Vinrock

Trainer Matt Laurie will resist the lure of a $1 million Group 1 in Sydney, electing to run Vinrock (I Am Invincible) in the Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley on Friday night. Laurie had originally planned to send the Group 1 winner to the Golden Rose at Rosehill, but he confirmed at Caulfield on Saturday that Vinrock will instead stay in Victoria to race. "We had a good think about it and we just felt it would give him the best chance to be back here [for the Caulfield Guineas] we'll stay at home," Laurie told Racing.com. "Hopefully it's another Group race that he can knock off and add to his resume and then he gets his chance in the Guineas." Vinrock impressed when a second-up winner of the Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington earlier in the month, and Laurie said he had no concerns taking him to 1600 metres rather than staying at the 1400 metres of a Golden Rose. "I don't think that [the 1600-metre trip] will worry him," he said. "He can begin well and put himself in a good position. I wasn't really worried about traveling [to Sydney] as such. I'd love to participate in the Golden Rose, but I think we're better off focusing on this."

Tempted on song for Golden Rose

Tempted (Credit: Racing Photos)

Godolphin’s talented filly Tempted (Street Boss) will be on an audition to fill her owner’s slow in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) when she lines up in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The daughter of Street Boss (Street Cry) easily defeated her rivals in the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) for new trainer Ciaron Maher, and will jump under Ethan Brown from barrier eight in Saturday’s nine-horse field. "She was up there with the best of them as a two-year-old and she's come back in great order as a three-year-old," Maher said. "Godolphin do have their slot and there have been discussions, but it will be one step at a time. We'll head to Saturday and see how we line up." Tempted is prepared from Maher’s Bong Bong base where she had a gallop on Monday in preparation for Saturday’s feature. "She's not overly big but has a lot of depth to her," Maher said. "She's not a heavy horse and didn't tighten up a lot after her run in the Run To The Rose, Bong Bong suits her. She can go in the paddock, and she's got a bit of chestnut filly in her. She relaxes well [there], she eats well, and it suits those types of horses that can be a bit highly strung."

Waller confident in Golden quartet

Chris Waller will field a quartet of runners in Saturday's Golden Rose, and feels that all four have a chance of winning the Group 1 feature. Wodeton (Wootton Bassett), Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), Beiwacht (Bivouac) and Sixties (Flying Artie) will line up for Waller, with Wodeton and Beiwacht having come through the traditional lead-up of the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m), finishing fourth and second respectively behind the re-opposing Tempted. “I think we have four winning chances, and only one of them can win,’’ Waller told Racing NSW. “It’s more about race fitness and mileage and having them prepared. I think they need to run two weeks before or you’re on the back foot. They need to be rock hard fit and I think the lead up runs suited each horse. He [Wodeton] was terrific second-up, he was three wide no cover which is never easy. He’s come back really well, he’s taken the step from a two-year-old to three-year-old which is the only step I’m really looking for. His big races will come and barrier draws are all important. The 1400 metres looks ideal, it’s a stallion making race and he missed narrowly in the Golden Slipper. So hopefully we can get some retaliation. [Beiwacht] stuck on gamely to beat all the boys home in the Run To The Rose, only beaten by Tempted who I think is a proper Group 1 horse. He has the right form.” Meanwhile, Sixties defeated Autumn Boy in the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) last time out. “He was good last start. He deserved it, it’s his first prep,’’ Waller said. “It’s a big ask but it’s his home track, he’s a brother to Artorius and he deserves to be running in a Group 1 race. Then he’ll go for a well earned break. [Autumn Boy's] come through it really well. It’s his home track, 1400 metres, it’s a stallion making race, his dad won it and there’s no reason why he can’t win it.”

Aeliana gets look at The Valley

April's Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Aeliana (Castelvecchio) had her first look at The Valley on Monday as the Chris Waller-trained mare continues preparations for a potential Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) bid. “She seemed to get around it pretty well,” Waller told Racing.com. “We had Steve Arnold on her and Steve’s not just an amazing rider, he’s a great judge, he was pretty happy with her work and said that she also got around the track really well.” Waller revealed that the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on October 4 could be next for the daughter of Castelvecchio (Dundeel), however that would mean taking on her stablemate Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock). “Ideally, we don’t want them to clash, so we’re still considering the Caulfield Stakes, keeping a close eye on the Feehan Stakes and just seeing how those horses go, where they’re going,” Waller said. “Wherever she goes, she’s going to be taking on a good horse. I’d say Flemington probably suits her, 2000 metres, and then work out from there where she heads next.” Via Sistina also put in a strong piece of work on Monday morning at The Valley for James McDonald. “Via Sistina, she’s a natural around here, she loves it, drops her shoulder when she gets to the bend and powers up the straight,” Waller said. “All cylinders were firing, and James was very pleased with her work. She’s ticking along nicely ahead of the Turnbull.”

First trial success for Sword Of State

State Of Valour scores at the Te Rapa trials (Credit: Trish Dunell)

Cambridge Stud stallion Sword Of State (Snitzel) was represented by an impressive trial winner when State Of Valour coasted to victory in his two-year-old heat over 730 metres at Te Rapa on Tuesday. Prepared by Chad Ormsby, the gelding was quickly into stride to sit on the pace and lengthened stride in the run home under a minimum of urging by Tayla Mitchell to score by three and a half lengths. “I was very impressed by what he did with the little practice that he’s had,” his trainer said. “He came to us to be broken in and we identified him as quite an early type, we got him going and everything from that time on has been really natural. I’ve been impressed by the stallion and have got a couple by him in the stable and this one is the more forward of the two.” State Of Valour failed to meet his $60,000 reserve when offered at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and is a son of the French-bred Lope De Vega (Shamardal) mare Illadore, whose family boasts an abundance of international stakes winners. “I’ll talk to the team but I think we can go to the races with him now. He’s a half-brother to Sister Ping who we had later in her career, and she was very fast over a shorter distance and I think he’s in a similar mould,” Ormsby said.

Lydiard Park to benefit from conditions at Cambridge

Regally bred colt Lydiard Park (Wootton Bassett) will get conditions more in his favour when he steps out in the TCL Earthworks Maiden (1500m) at Cambridge on Wednesday. The son of the late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) is trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood and finished fifth on debut earlier this month at Ruakaka, where he raced greenly and was unsuited by the rain-affected going. “We chanced our arm going there off the one soft trial and it didn’t all go his way, we thought it was a pass mark and certainly hoping to see a bit more on Wednesday,” Wellwood said. Lydiard Park was a $200,000 purchase at the NZB Karaka Ready to Run Sale, offered through Woburn Farm’s draft. He is out of the Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) mare Ciarlet, a sister to multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Zoustar. “He’s a very nice colt and a horse that needs a good track. We had options for him next week but the way the weather is we’ll go to the synthetic where we know we’ll get a good surface,” Wellwood said. “Hopefully, that gets him back on track to look at some nice three-year-old races, but he has to step up and we’re looking forward to it.”

Crocetti pleases in Te Rapa hit-out

Group 1-winning sprinter Crocetti (Zacinto) made his first public appearance of the season when winning his 1100-metre trial at Te Rapa on Tuesday. The Danny Walker and Arron Tata-trained gelding jumped away well to sit outside leader Boss 'N' Highheels (Written Tycoon). He found the lead comfortably under his own steam when entering the straight and ran out an effortless two-length victor over Lachie (Belardo). Walker was pleased with what he saw ahead of his spring preparation. “He had a nice gallop,” he said. “He is looking good, he is good in the coat, and he has trialled well, so we can’t be any happier than that.” The five-year-old son of Zacinto (Dansili) has been back in work for the last couple of months following an Australian hit-and-run mission in April where he finished last in The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot. Walker said he took no ill-effects from the trip and he is looking forward to the season ahead with his stable star, which will likely kick-off next month. “He will probably go to Rotorua on the 12th of October for the Sweynesse Stakes,” he said. “We will play it by ear and see how he comes through Rotorua and make a plan after that. There’s not a lot around really until Christmas time.”

Pitman Cup Week hopefuls head to Timaru

Riccarton trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman will head to Phar Lap Raceway with a strong team on Wednesday, including a trio who have some feature New Zealand Cup Week targets on the line. Ocean Light (Ocean Park) holds a nomination for the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and will take his first step towards the two-mile feature in the Hospitality NZ – SC Branch 1600 (1600m). The five-year-old gelding will be fresh-up after a six-week break and his trainers are hoping he can continue his good run of form, having won three and placed in three of his last six starts. “We were going to race him a couple of weeks ago but decided not to run him on a real heavy track first-up,” Michael Pitman said. “The track should be really nice at Timaru, it should come back to a [Good] 4 or [Soft] 5. We are really happy with him, he is coming up well. His main aim is Cup Week. He is nominated for the New Zealand Cup, but whether he gets to that race or the Metropolitan, we will just see how he goes in his next two to three starts.” He will be joined in his race by stablemate Epee Beel (Epaulette), who is on a path towards the Join TAB Racing Club Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) on the middle day of New Zealand Cup Week. “This looks a nice race for her. She has got a bit of weight [59 kilograms] to carry, but she has got it because she has won a couple of stakes races," Pitman said. Stablemate Star Ballot (Tarzino) will also contest the mile on Wednesday, with the hope of also contesting the New Zealand Cup in November.

UK: Scandinavia not travelling for Melbourne Cup

Scandinavia (Justify) will not contest this year's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), with reports in Australia suggesting the English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) winner failed his vet checks. Trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed the colt will not race again this season and will be campaigned towards the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) at Royal Ascot next year. The son of Justify (Scat Daddy) faced dual Derby winner and stablemate Lambourn (Australia) in the St Leger and, after he landed the Classic in gutsy fashion under Tom Marquand, the Melbourne Cup was mooted as a possibility but O'Brien has revealed that the star won't travel to Australia or take on Trawlerman (Golden Horn) at Ascot on next month’s Champions Day. Instead, he will be put away for next year with a view to the Gold Cup, a race the recently retired Kyprios (Galileo) won twice for Ballydoyle. O'Brien said: "Scandivania won't be going to the Melbourne Cup. He's finished for the season and we'll train him for the Gold Cup next year."

UK: Luther ruled out of Golden Eagle bid

UK-based trainer Charlie Fellowes revealed on Tuesday that his Grade 2-winning colt Luther (Frankel) will not be heading to Australia to tackle November’s Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill after suffering a setback. The northern hemisphere three-year-old colt, who also ran third in the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) in July, was awarded the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Saratoga on August 1, finishing second but being promoted to first place after the disqualification of first past-the-post Zulu Kingdom (Ten Sovereigns). A post on ‘X’ from Fellowes on Tuesday read: “Devastatingly Luther has suffered a setback and will not be making the trip to Australia for the Golden Eagle. He has been a star for us this year and we look forward to seeing him back on the track next year.”
