‘Not many horses do what he did that day’

Runaway Ken Russell Classic winner Beadman set for return

Most of last season’s top echelon of two-year-olds have reappeared for the spring, those who were front and centre on the biggest autumn stages.

But one who took a road less travelled that could turn out the most special of them all will resume at Rosehill on Saturday, with connections trying to keep a lid on their excitement.

The colt is Beadman (Snitzel), who was slow to hand, not just because he was a November foal but due to a sequence of minor issues, but who announced himself emphatically in three late autumn starts.

Bred by Arrowfield and Hermitage Thoroughbreds, out of a French stakes-winning sprinter by Iffraaj (Zafonic), Beadman fetched a hefty $900,000 when bought at Magic Millions Gold Coast by the China Horse Club-Newgate axis, along with Go Bloodstock and Trilogy in 2024.

Sent to Peter Snowden, he only had his first barrier trial the day before the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), running second at Warwick Farm before winning another heat at Rosehill two weeks later.

The handsome chestnut debuted with a 0.3-length second in a 1000-metre Kembla Grange maiden, beaten by filly Akaysha (Capitalist), a stablemate who’s been stakes-placed twice in her three subsequent runs.

Beadman franked the form with an imposing 1.93 lengths victory at his second start, in a 1250-metre Newcastle maiden, starting $1.35.

But it was what he did next that blew people away - including Snowden and jockey James McDonald - in the Gold Coast’s Ken Russell Classic (Gr 3, 1200m). Stepping up into a classy 13-horse field on a Heavy 8, but still sent off at odds-on, he took up the lead and just drew further and further away, winning by the proverbial panels of fencing.

The second horse Sunrays (Hellbent) finished 8.3 lengths behind him. She won her next two in Brisbane Listed class.

“Not many horses do what he did that day,” McDonald told ANZ News.

What's On

“I just didn’t realise we were that far in front in the straight - that’s the way he travelled. I was waiting to hear the field coming so I’d push the button on him, but I couldn’t hear them. I looked around at the 200 and they were a mile behind.”

McDonald has ridden the odd handy one, so he’s had the feel Beadman gave him “plenty” of times before.

“But still, he couldn’t have been any more impressive than he was that day,” he said. “He’s well on his way.”

Veteran trainer Snowden has felt the hard edge of racing’s fates too often to make too bold a statement about a young horse, especially one who’s only had three starts.

But he does have to try harder than usual to “keep a lid on things” about Beadman, who after two recent barrier trials - the latest a win under McDonald at Randwick - resumes in Saturday’s Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m).

It’s a quality field, featuring, among others, another of Snitzel’s (Redoute’s Choice) offspring who did star on a grand autumn stage - Slipper winner Marhoona.

Several other star two-year-olds of last season will compete elsewhere on the card in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m). Beadman is on a sprint path for now, but Snowden expects he’ll handle 1400 metres or perhaps more later on.

Reporting Beadman has come back from a lengthy spell 50 kilograms heavier and “a magnificent” beast of a colt, Snowden expects he’ll acquit himself well on Saturday, even if 1100 metres may be a fraction short and he may be better placed to prove himself the real deal later in the spring.

“He’s really furnished now - he’s the finished product,” Snowden told ANZ. “He’s bigger in the backside, the shoulder - all over. He’s really developed a lot.

I thought, ‘Wow - they don’t do that unless they’re above average’. And then you think the horse who ran second came out and won two stakes races afterwards. That makes you think he could be something better than normal

PETER SNOWDEN

“When he first came into the stable, he was a little light version of himself. He had a few issues - nothing major - that slowed him down a bit. He went shin sore pretty quickly, because he was late getting in.

“So it took him a while to come to hand, but you wouldn’t see a better sort anywhere now. He’s just a magnificent horse now.”

Snowden won’t look too far ahead, beyond saying the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on October 11 at Rosehill will likely be Beadman’s next start, before the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day. Beadman is an $8 equal third favourite for that stallion-maker, behind Tempted (Street Boss) at $4.50 and ahead of that other filly, Marhoona, at $15.

But the trainer is happy to look back, and while he’s seen many impressive thoroughbreds, he admits Beadman took his breath away at the Gold Coast.

“He was always a nice horse, and a beautiful looking horse,” Snowden said.

“His first start at Kembla, he probably should’ve won, but the horse who beat him ended up a pretty smart filly.

“He had a really good win at Newcastle, but then he went to the Gold Coast and met a couple of good horses. The track was particularly wet that day, but I was surprised by just how big a gap he put on them. And he was still impressive through the line - he just kept running and running and running. It was pretty impressive.

“I thought, ‘Wow - they don’t do that unless they’re above average’. And then you think the horse who ran second came out and won two stakes races afterwards. That makes you think he could be something better than normal.”

Newgate managing director Henry Field certainly liked what he saw at the Gold Coast in the yearling Beadman, whose dam Iffranesia (Iffraaj) won nine times from 1000-1100 metres, including in Listed class at Chantilly, alongside three black type placings.

He liked the price as well, about a colt who’s taken the right early steps to becoming a Newgate stallion prospect.

“Beadman was just a big, strong, athletic, sweet-moving horse - really lovely quality,” Field told ANZ. “He was hugely athletic, but with plenty of size and scope.

“He was by a champion sire in Snitzel, out of an Iffraaj mare, and that Iffraaj blood has worked pretty well here; obviously he’s the sire of [the late] Wootton Bassett.

“The colt was raised on a good farm at Arrowfield, who we’ve had a lot of success buying Group 1 winners from, so he ticked a few boxes.

“I thought he was the stand-out Snitzel colt at Magic Millions that year, so I probably thought he’d make a bit more than $900,000 to be honest. I thought we’d have to pay north of a million, rather than less.

“So we were very happy to get him, and we’re liking what we’re seeing so far. Fast mare, fast stallion, fast horse.

“He showed really good ability as a two-year-old, so we’re hoping to see it transfer through to his three-year-old year. I can’t wait to see him let rip on Saturday.

“Peter’s got a huge opinion of him. Whatever he does on Saturday, he’ll make great improvement on. We just want to see him run really well and if he does that we’ll be happy.”

Snowden gives Beadman an even chance for the Heritage. He’s the trainer’s top seed for the Coolmore but he also expects the “easy-going” colt to handle a longer trip later on.

“I’m not hiding the fact I really like the horse - I think he’s well above average - but he’s got to come back and do it again and do it better,” Snowden said.

“Even on Saturday - it’s a good field, it’s got the Slipper winner, and she’s been trialling very well, and she’s no slouch.

“And I don’t think 1100 metres is his trip. He probably wants 1200 or even 1400 in time. I’m not putting down his chances for Saturday, because I think he’ll run really well, but he’s not just an out and out sprinter; there’s a bit more substance to him than that.

“I’m not going to get too carried away; I never do. The racing ladder is a slippery one. But you do get a feel for him, that’s for sure, that there might be something there that’s a bit above the average.”

Share in Charm Stone tops Inglis September (Late) Online Sale

Charm Stone (Credit: Racing Photos)

A ten per cent share in Group 1-winning mare Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) topped the Inglis September (Late) Online Sale when selling for $310,000, the second highest price for a racehorse share on the platform this year.

Charm Stone (I Am Invincible), a winner of the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in April and three other stakes races, is set to line up in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley on Friday night for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

The ten per cent share – purchased by Walnut Farm – was offered by Rob Cummings and was the subject of fierce competition, with three individual bidders over the $250,000 mark.

“I’m very happy with the result,” Cummings said. “I’m downsizing my breeding operation and Will Stott – who looks after me at Inglis – advised me to list the share on Inglis Digital.

“Inglis did a great job with the marketing and Will goes above and beyond. The ownership group have been great, I’m still good friends with them and I wish them, and the new part-owner, the best of luck with her Friday night and into the future.”

The second-top lot was three-year-old colt Valedictorian (Zoustar), who sold to Eric Yeung for $200,000.

Valedictorian, out of the Group 3-winning mare Lady Cosmology (Universal Ruler), was offered by James Harron Bloodstock on behalf of the ownership group.

In total, the September (Late) Sale grossed $2,919,050 with Braveheart (I Am Invincible) ($110,000 to Executive Racing Club), Field Of Myrtle (Deep Field) ($110,000 to Kianben Bloodstock) and a juvenile Castelvecchio (Dundeel) colt from Miss Helsinki (Hussonet) ($100,000 to Monarch Racing Syndications) also selling for six figures.

In 2025, there have been 111 lots sold for $100,000 or more so far. Entries will close for the October (Early) Sale next Wednesday, October 1. The sale will run October 3-8. To enter click here.

James Harron snaps up Angel Capital for The Everest

Angel Capital (Credit: Racing Photos)

James Harron Bloodstock has announced a partnership with Yulong Investments for October's The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), with rising star Angel Capital (Harry Angel) confirmed as the runner in the James Harron Bloodstock slot. The four-year-old son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) landed the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) and McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last season, and has reappeared with a win in the Chautauqua Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and fourth-placed effort in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) this time in. “Angel Capital looks to have gone to another level this preparation,” James Harron said in a statement. “We’re honoured to partner with Yulong and this hugely exciting horse - he very much looks as though he will be ideally suited to what is shaping up to be a very high-pressure Everest this year." Yulong's chief executive officer Sam Fairgray added: “We’re delighted to partner with James and his owners to tackle The Everest with Angel Capital. It’s a hugely exciting opportunity for this colt and one Chris Waller has been very keen to pursue. Angel Capital is a colt on an upward trajectory this season, Mr Zhang and the Yulong team are thrilled he has the chance to spread his wings in the world’s richest turf race.”

Baraqiel shoots for Group 1 double at The Valley

Last-start Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Baraqiel (Snitzel) will chase back-to-back Moonee Valley Group 1s when he lines up in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on Friday night. The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin-trained gelding has overcome numerous setbacks in his career, including being scratched at the barriers ahead of the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in July after a race-day vet inspection, prior to his Moir victory. "This was always going to be our Grand Final, but we may change that afterwards," Troy Corstens said. "I always say as a trainer, I deserve the right to change my mind at any time. I’d love to look at The Everest, if I can. I think Nathan [Bennett, owner] has had a couple of phone calls, but nothing serious just yet. I think everyone is holding back for Friday night and to win the Moir, it was a bonus." Corstens, who had gone eight years without an elite-level win before the Moir, is hungry for more. "We got the Group 1, but once you've got one, you want more unfortunately, because we're greedy," he said. "Winning Group 1s is really addictive. It was eight years since my last one and I'm hoping it won't be eight years until my next." Baraqiel will jump from barrier seven in the ten-horse field and will be partnered by Ben Allen, who has been aboard the gelding in all 12 starts, registering eight wins. "It will be interesting to see what goes forward," Corstens said. “Rothfire is drawn outside us, so that might make it OK for us if he goes forward and then it depends where he gets posted. I try not to pin Ben down with much. He knows what he's doing and knows the horse very well. We'll let him ride the race." With Friday night's Manikato the last to be held on the current Moonee Valley layout, Corstens added: "I love Moonee Valley, so to win it would be unbelievable.”

Star mares confirmed for Feehan showdown

A mouth-watering clash between Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) headlines a select field of six for Friday night’s Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley. The Ciaron Maher-trained Pride Of Jenni, who lit up the track in last year’s edition of the Feehan with her front-running heroics, has drawn barrier two with Declan Bates aboard. Right alongside her in barrier one is four-year-old Treasurethe Moment, the brilliant winner of the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), who will be ridden by Mark Zahra in the absence of suspended Damian Lane. The small but classy line-up also features Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) (barrier five, Nash Rawiller), the returning Group 1-placed import Alenquer (Alderflug) (barrier three, Blake Shinn), Attrition (Churchill) (barrier six, Beau Mertens) and Flying Valley (Dark Valley) (barrier four, Jamie Mott) for Julius Sandhu.

Tom Kitten to improve in Feehan

Tom Kitten (Credit: Sportpix)

Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) will look to put his spring campaign back on track in Friday night’s Feehan Stakes at The Valley, with co-trainer Sam Freedman expecting a very different scenario to his first-up run. The Godolphin-owned gelding finished fifth in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), a race run at a muddling tempo that saw him over-race and tire late. "He began really well out of the gates if you want to take something positive out of the experience first-up," Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said. "He was very fresh for the first half, and it probably told at the finish. He pulled too hard, but all the same he pulled up well and had a nice blow. Coming to the Feehan, it will be a different race shape to what he was coming out of, so we felt the need to step his training up and be quite hard on him between runs. It's a tricky dynamic when you're coming out of a slowly run race to one where they go flat out. Pride Of Jenni being in a race, you need to be rock-hard fit, so he's had a couple of searching gallops between runs and he'll be in the firing line on Friday night." Tom Kitten worked at The Valley on Monday in preparation for Friday and Freedman said he handled the track well, and he remains in the nominations for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 25 after second declarations on Tuesday. "That [race at Flemington] was our Memsie run, clearing the cobwebs, and hopefully now we can have a clear run through," Freedman said. "You chase your tail a little bit, but hopefully he's on the right leg and he can make an impact."

Marhoona poised for Rosehill resumption

Last season’s Champion two-year-old and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Marhoona (Snitzel) is set to make her long-awaited return in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The filly was scratched from The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick last weekend after trainer Michael Freedman decided she would be better suited by the conditions and gate this Saturday. "When I had a look at the set-up of the [Shorts] and the weight she was going to carry, she was only getting a kilo off Joliestar and the barrier was a little bit of a concern too," Freedman said. "We thought, we'll just go against her own age group and hopefully onto the Roman Consul [Stakes] after that. I'm really happy with her. She worked great here last Tuesday [week] and it was really just deciding to wait and go to [this] week." Marhoona has won and finished second in two jump-outs leading up to her return, most recently beaten only by Briasa (Smart Missile), and the Emirates Park-owned filly will jump from barrier four with Tommy Berry on board on Saturday.

Lees banking on Rivellino’s Golden Rose step up

Trainer Kris Lees is confident Rivellino (Too Darn Hot) is tracking well into Saturday’s $1 million Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill. The colt has been tested in the right lead-ups, finishing fourth when resuming in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before a midfield run behind Tempted (Street Boss) in The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m). “His runs have certainly got pass marks with a view that 1400 metres and maybe even a mile this preparation is going to be more to his liking,” Lees said. “First-up he stepped slow and had to give away a big start, and second-up it was an advantage to be on speed, which doesn’t suit his racing style.” Rivellino announced himself as one of last season’s sharp juveniles with victories in his first three starts, highlighted by the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). He was luckless when flashing home for fourth in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and was beaten less than a length when fifth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Drawn the outside of nine on Saturday, Lees said the tempo will dictate his colt’s chances. “A genuine speed will be to his liking. We’ve always thought he was a 1400-metre to a mile horse,” he said. “He will probably go to the Caulfield Guineas after this.”

McEvoy confident Skyhook can strike in Golden Rose

Rider Kerrin McEvoy is confident Skyhook (Written Tycoon) can turn the tables on his rivals in the Golden Rose at Rosehill on Saturday. Skyhook was held up for clear running when third behind Tempted in the Run To The Rose and McEvoy believes he could have finished closer without interference, given he clocked the fastest last 200 metres of the race. “Given the way the day played I should have chased the speed a bit and that saw us get pocketed,’’ the rider told Racing NSW. “We got clear when the race was all over and I felt if he had got clear air he would have been right there and challenging Tempted. It shows he’s backed up from his first-up win well and it gives us confidence against what’s likely to be the favourite on Saturday.” McEvoy believes Skyhook has enjoyed a faultless preparation, beginning with his eye-catching Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) win, and this time he will reach his target as planned, unlike in the autumn when he was forced to back up within a week in the Golden Slipper. “He had to do it the hard way into the Slipper but this time it’s been a different sort of a prep,’’ he said. “He didn’t thicken right up in his break but he got a lot taller and grew up a fair bit, he’s progressed from two to three which is what you need to do. Although many of his opposition have had a go [at 1400 metres] I’m more than hopeful he will enjoy it.” Skyhook will jump from barrier five in the nine-horse field. “It’s a small field and he’s a bit versatile as we’ve seen and that can often offset a barrier draw,’’ McEvoy said. “He can be close, he can be just off them. It’s going to be a different race compared to the quickly run Run To The Rose. Providing he can step away it gives us options to where we can park up. He’s going to need to bring his best and I’m confident of him running well.”

Giga Kick primed for Caulfield comeback

Giga Kick (Credit: Racing Photos)

Clayton Douglas has declared Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) the best he’s had him since his brilliant three-year-old campaign, with the star sprinter set to resume on Caulfield Guineas Day. The 2022 Everest winner will trial next week before lining up in the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) on October 11, his first outing since the winter. “He is coming along really well,” Douglas told Racing.com. “I’m looking forward to getting him back to the races. I think he’s come back in really good order.” Giga Kick had just two runs during the winter, storming home for third in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) before a midfield finish in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m). After a good break, Douglas believes those runs have laid the foundation for a strong spring. “He pretty much had 12 months off and has been a management job, all the way through,” Douglas said. “I think he is really getting back to being a healthy, happy horse and is moving really well in himself. We’ve had a trouble-free preparation this time around.”

Golden Path’s Caulfield Cup dream alive after Underwood placing

Mick Price admits he’s unsure if Golden Path (Belardo) will stay the trip, but the co-trainer says the gelding deserves his chance in next month’s $5 million Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) after a surprise placing in last Saturday’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m). Golden Path has yet to race beyond 2000 metres, but his odds have shortened from $101 into $23 for the October 18 feature following his brave effort behind Sir Delius (Frankel) and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock). “I thought this race was worth a little try, but I’m not getting carried away,” Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, told Racing.com. “He may end up in a Caulfield Cup because it may be his only chance to win a decent race. His only chance is if he does stay.” Price said Golden Path lacks the turn of foot of Australia’s elite weight-for-age competitors but believes his stamina may open the door to Caulfield Cup glory. “He’s not a weight-for-age horse. There’s not a better turn of foot than what we just saw [in the Underwood], but he does not live in that territory,” Price said. Golden Path showed promise at the top level in the autumn, finishing within two lengths of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) but Price noted those margins felt “a long way” against world-class opposition. Currently sitting 27th in the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup, Golden Path may not need to win his way into the field. A run in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) is under consideration.

Williams family pin Cup hopes on Turnbull Stakes day

Nick Williams concedes the family won’t have the best horse in this year’s $10 million Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) but hopes of an eighth triumph remain alive – at least for now.
Five horses nominated for the Cup will carry the navy and white colours of Lloyd and Nick Williams, and their fates may hinge on the Turnbull Stakes meeting at Flemington on October 4. “The truth is, the whole spring changes on Turnbull Stakes day,” Williams told Racing.com. “It does seem very open and there will be a few questions answered on that day.” Among the team, Changingoftheguard (Galileo) is well placed in 38th on the Cup order of entry and could head to the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) in Sydney or The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington. Stablemate Adelaide River (Australia), currently outside the first ballot clause, has also qualified for the Caulfield Cup and may step out in the Turnbull. Point King (Zoffany), at 44th in order, is still a few weeks away, while Cleveland (Camelot), winner of the 2023 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m), will run in Saturday’s Colin Stephen (Gr 3, 2400m) at Randwick after a fourth placing first-up in the City Tattersalls Club Cup (Listed, 2400m). Post Impressionist (Teofilo), sitting 49th, will be aimed at The Bart Cummings. Williams is realistic about the challenge posed by Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett), the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) winner set to arrive in Melbourne next month. “He’s the best horse to be going around at Flemington by quite some space in my view,” he said. “But can he win with 59 kilograms? A big ask, but he’s a bloody good horse.”

Team Kearney chasing more home-track success

Hawkesbury trainers Mitch and Desiree Kearney are eyeing another strong showing at home on Thursday before turning their attention to a career-first milestone at Randwick. The husband-and-wife team sent out five runners at Hawkesbury on September 11, collecting two wins and three placings in a career-best day. They’ll again saddle up five horses tomorrow, headed by stable favourite Lady Shenanigans (Zoustar) in the card’s Benchmark 64 over 1100 metres. Purchased for just $1,750 in 2021, the eight-year-old has now earned nearly $350,000 and is chasing his tenth victory. Apprentice Mollie Fitzgerald retains the ride after steering him to victory a fortnight ago. “He is really glowing this preparation and enjoying his racing,” Desiree Kearney told Racing NSW. “We’re confident he can run well again and finish in the first three if not win.” Stablemate Share The Joy (Overshare) is also fancied to break her maiden after nine placings, while recent placegetters More Voltage (Charge Forward) and Heeza Steve (Fierce Impact) return, alongside debutante Miss Johanski (Graff). The Kearneys will then look to Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, where they’ll have their first runners in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) and Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m). Trial winners Oh Yes She Did (Yes Yes Yes) and Iambubb (I Am Invincible) secured their spots with impressive heat wins on Monday and will be ridden by Tyler Schiller. “It’s very exciting having our first ever runners in the Gimcrack and Breeders’ Plate,” Kearney said.

Hayes happy with Ka Ying Rising

Champion trainer David Hayes says The Everest favourite Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) has settled in perfectly after touching down in Sydney on Monday morning. The Hong Kong superstar departed on Sunday night and is now based at Canterbury Racecourse, where he will complete his two-week quarantine before trialling at Randwick on October 7. “He’s travelled really well,” Hayes told Racing.com. “He’s on his feed, he’ll be doing slow walk canters for a couple of days, then he might do a little bit of striding work on Saturday morning or Sunday and then one other piece of work before the trial. He’s really ticking along well.” The Shamexpress (O’Reilly) gelding arrives with a formidable record of 14 wins from 16 starts, including a current streak of 13 victories stretching back to January, 2024. He is a dominant $2 favourite for the $20 million The Everest at Randwick on October 18.

Campbell crowned with Damien Oliver Award

Apprentice jockey Luke Campbell capped a breakout season in fitting style on Monday night, claiming the prestigious Damien Oliver Award at Racing WA’s 2024/25 Apprentice Jockey Awards at Optus Stadium. Presented by Damien Oliver himself, Campbell also collected the Leading Rider and Leading Metro Jockey titles, rounding out a year that marks his graduation into the senior ranks. Racing WA chief racing officer David Hunter said the Damien Oliver Award celebrated far more than race-day results. “This award is about more than wins in the saddle. It recognises dedication, growth and the way our apprentices carry themselves on and off the track,” Hunter said. “Luke has shown maturity, consistency and professionalism, and this is the perfect way to celebrate his transition. To receive the award from Damien himself will no doubt be a career highlight.” Racing and Wagering WA CEO Ian Edwards praised the Apprentice Jockey Training Program as the cornerstone of developing future talent. “Our program is about developing resilient, well-rounded young people who can thrive both on and off the track,” Edwards said. “With the support of our coaches Peter Hall and John Claite, our apprentices get the best possible start.” Other award winners included Zephen Johnston-Porter (Damion Beckett Award), Rosie Mahony (Leading Country Apprentice) and Holly Nottle (Rising Star Award). The evening also celebrated the graduation of Campbell, Brayden Gaerth and Kristo Sardelic, alongside the induction of six new apprentices into the program.

Surf’s Up makes a splash for Flying Artie

Flying Artie (Credit: Blue Gum Farm)

Blue Gum Farm stallion Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) added another promising three-year-old winner to his tally on Wednesday when the well-bred Surf’s Up scored impressively at Warwick Farm. The Chris Waller-trained filly, a half-sister to Group 2 performer Cigar Flick (Churchill) and closely related to $10 million earner Fangirl (Sebring), had placed in all three prior starts and broke through in style under Zac Lloyd. “She was very good first up and had a beautiful ride from Zac today. He put her in a beautiful spot from a really tricky draw, and that I think that was the winning move,” Waller said. “It's never easy to run Nash [Rawiller on runner-up Mrs Maree] down, he's always a good judge of pace and he got a good break on the field, but she pinned her ears back, as we say, and she reeled in the leader and it was a good win.” The $100,000 Super Maiden (1200m) winner has now earned over $85,000 from four starts, and Waller indicated black-type targets are the logical next step. Bred by the Ingham family and foaled and raised at Coolmore, Surf’s Up is the second winner from Palmateer, a metro-winning Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare and half-sister to Fangirl. Palmateer has a yearling filly by Justify (Scat Daddy), is due to foal to Zoustar (Northern Meteor), and has a Street Boss (Street Cry) two-year-old named Palm Tree currently in training with Waller.

Yeomans trains first winner

Lucy Yeomans trained her first winner as a solo trainer at Sandown on Wednesday when her partner Blake Shinn rode the Tony Ottobre-owned Enchanted Jenni (Per Incanto) to a smart maiden victory on stable debut. "It feels amazing - I thought I'd be a mess and crying, but I'm keeping it together," Yeomans, who formerly trained in partnership with Lloyd Kennewell, said. "There's too many people to thank, I don't know where to start. Obviously, my partner Blake gave her a peach of a ride. We've got six horses in work, it's just me and my right hand girl Taylah [Ingram], so a little team effort and we're just so delighted to get the job done so soon. Obviously a massive thanks to Tony Ottobre. He's supported me all along, way back when I was at Ciaron's [Maher], to when I was in a training partnership and he sent three horses around the day I opened. Kiwi Raider (Per Incanto) broke through at her second start with a determined victory in the $32,000 Solomons Flooring Maiden (1017m) at Moe on Tuesday. The Te Akau filly had impressed in a Mornington debut earlier this month, finishing third after a jump-out win, and rewarded jockey Ethan Brown with a strong effort on Soft 7 ground. Settling outside the leader, Kiwi Raider kept fighting in the straight to edge clear near the line, stopping the clock in 1:01.8s and paying $2.30. “She’s probably better suited to bigger tracks, but it was only 1000 metres today and the key has been getting her to settle,” Brown said. “She still did a bit wrong, but she dropped her head, towed me into it and the win probably felt better than it looked. With time, she can come back in the autumn and make a nice horse.” Kiwi Raider was a $270,000 Karaka Ready To Run purchase by David Ellis CNZM, Ozzie Kheir, Group 1 Bloodstock and Bruce Perry Bloodstock, and carries the same Kheir colours as stablemate Exuberance (Savabeel). Trainer Mark Walker praised the patient approach of the ownership group. “She’s a typical Ready To Run filly who wanted to overdo things early, but she’s been managed nicely and will go for a break now,” he said. “She’ll develop into a really nice filly for the autumn.” By leading sire Per Incanto (Street Cry), Kiwi Raider is the fourth winner out of Anaween (More Than Ready), from the family of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) heroine Amarelinha (Savabeel).

RV introduce digital ticketing platform

Racing Victoria (RV) has unveiled a new digital ticketing platform that will streamline and modernise the raceday experience for owners across the state. Backed by the Victorian Government’s Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF), the app-based system will allow owners to access and share their tickets from any device, eliminating the need for physical passes. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with the Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association (TROA), with support from the Victoria Racing Club, Melbourne Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racing Club, Country Racing Victoria and Southside Racing. RV CEO Aaron Morrison said the platform was a “significant step forward” in improving consistency and convenience. “A centralised digital ticketing platform will significantly improve and simplify the race-day experience when fully operational,” Morrison told Racing.com. “It will standardise the redemption process across clubs, benefiting owners.” Minister for racing Anthony Carbines said the investment recognised the vital role of the state’s 70,000 owners. “Owners are among the most passionate people you will meet at a racetrack. This initiative will give them a better experience while supporting our clubs and the Victorian economy,” he said. TROA chairman Jonathan Munz hailed the move as long overdue, noting it would “streamline the collection and use of raceday entitlements” such as admission, members’ reserve, and mounting yard access. The rollout will occur in two phases across the 2025-26 season. Phase 1 introduces the Digital Victorian Owner Gold Card for racecourse access, while Phase 2 – post-Spring Carnival – will integrate all yard and hospitality entitlements into the app.

Singletary to debut at Otaki

Singletary (Credit: Race Images)

Otaki trainer Andrew Campbell is set to unearth his promising juvenile Singletary (Satono Aladdin) when he makes his debut in the Vets On Riverbank Two-Year-Old (800m) at his home track on Friday. The colt was purchased by Campbell and his primary owner Tommy Heptinstall out of Rich Hill Stud’s 2025 NZB Karaka National Yearling Sale draft for $125,000. He has impressed in his two trials to date, including victory over 850 metres at Foxton last week, and the trainer is confident of a bold showing on friday, where he will come up against just three other runners. “He was pretty impressive at the trials the other day,” Campbell said. “He is such a big striding horse. There’s a question mark about the track [rated a Heavy 10 on Wednesday morning], but we are going to start him because he is going to go to the paddock regardless.” Karaka Millions eligible, the $1 million 1200-metre feature at Ellerslie in January is Singletary’s main goal, and Campbell is hopeful of adding prize-money this weekend to help qualify him for the race. “The ultimate goal would be the Karaka Millions,” he said. “We are going to get a bit of stakes money on Friday and I would love to think it is the thicker end of it. Then we will put him in a paddock, bring him back for two or three races into the Karaka Millions, if he is good enough, but he certainly shows enough promise.”

Weather worry for Landlock

Matamata trainer Cody Cole is weighing up his options with talented three-year-old Landlock (Merchant Navy) as wet weather threatens his planned tilt at Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa. Landlock, runner-up in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and placed in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) as a juvenile, resumed with a fourth placing in the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) earlier this month. “It was a good effort, he didn’t really get a chance to get out and go through his gears to build momentum,” Cole said. “He was coming off heels at the 200 and had to pick himself up, which I thought he did really well especially with the way the race was run, it was hard for them to make ground. It was a good kick-off point, he raced like he is looking for a little bit further and his manners were good, so he’s only going to be better for that run as a first good blowout.” While the Guineas remains the logical next step, Cole said he won’t risk his charge on unsuitable ground. “My biggest concern is the track at the moment,” he said. “If it did get to the really testing, heavy going, we’d be looking at other options.”

Barrier boost for Tale Of The Gypsy

After a string of cruel barrier draws, talented filly Tale Of The Gypsy (Written By) has finally come up with the marble in Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa. The Written By (Written Tycoon) filly has jumped from wide gates in half of her six starts, yet still boasts a debut victory, fourth in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and fifth in the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). Last-start in the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) she was again caught deep and out of luck. Trainer Stephen Marsh is relieved she’ll finally get her chance from barrier one. “I rate all three of my runners but she’s been particularly unlucky,” he said. “In the Group 1 she was excellent, and last time she was three-wide with no cover.” Marsh will also saddle promising colts Magic Carpet (Satono Aladdin) and Moretothinkabout (So You Think). The former has placed at both starts, while the latter resumes with blinkers and a tongue tie after finishing runner-up at Ruakaka last season. “The boys are much better than maidens,” Marsh said. “Magic Carpet is better chasing than doing the donkey work, while Moretothinkabout will be suited at 1400 metres with that gear change.” The Cambridge trainer’s three-year-old arsenal also includes Churmatt (Churchill), who is bound for Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Day following his Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) second and subsequent win at Ellerslie. Marsh will also step out stable star El Vencedor (Shocking) in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) ahead of his main spring target, the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m).

Home Affairs colt strikes at Te Rapa

Home Affairs (Credit: Coolmore)

Fresh from siring a pair of Randwick juvenile trial winners on Monday, Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) added to his bright start when the Stephen Marsh-trained colt Rupeni posted an impressive New Zealand trial success at Te Rapa on Tuesday. A $160,000 Inglis Easter buy from Alma Vale Thoroughbreds for Stephen Marsh Racing and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock, the colt showed a slick turn of foot under George Rooke to come from off the pace and win his 730-metre heat by a neck. Rupeni is the second foal of Yolanda, a Shamus Award (Snitzel) half-sister to Group 3 winner Tallow (Street Cry), herself the dam of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and stakes winner Sandbar (Snitzel). Yolanda was purchased in foal to Home Affairs for $270,000 at last year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale by North Bloodstock, who welcomed a filly from the mating. Home Affairs is currently covering his fourth book at Coolmore Australia at a fee of $82,500 (inc GST), with expectations high for his first-crop runners following standout 2025 sale results.

38 for Nathaniel

Naqeeb (5 g ex Aghareed by Kingmambo) became the 38th individual stakes winner for Newsells Park Stud stallion Nathaniel (Galileo) when producing a shock victory in Wednesday’s Foundation Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Goodwood. Ridden by Ryan Sexton for trainer Julie Camacho, the five-year-old gelding defied his 33-1 odds as he stayed on well inside the final furlong to beat 2023 Futurity Trophy Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Ancient Wisdom (Dubawi) by a neck. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Saddadd (Pinatubo) in third place. From an esteemed Shadwell family, Naqeeb was purchased for 170,000gns by his trainer out of his breeders draft at the 2024 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale. He is a half-brother to champion racehorse Baaeed (Sea The Stars) and fellow Group 1 winner Hukum (Sea The Stars) being out of the Listed-winning Kingmambo (Mr Prospector) mare Aghareed, herself out of the 2007 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (Gr 1, 11f) winner Lahudood (Singspiel) and from the family of Nashwan (Blushing Groom). Nathaniel stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £20,000 (approx. AU$40,800).

UK: Fahey pays tribute to Wootton Bassett

Richard Fahey has described Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) as a "turning point" in his career as the trainer paid tribute to his two-year-old star, who went on to become a record-breaking stallion before his death at the age of 17 on Tuesday. The loss of Wootton Bassett due to pneumonia while on shuttle duty in Australia was a devastating blow to Coolmore and the wider global bloodstock industry, and was also felt keenly at Fahey's Musley Bank stables in Malton. The son of Iffraaj (Zafonic) won sales races at York and Doncaster in 2010 for Fahey, before providing the trainer and three-time champion jockey Paul Hanagan with their first Group 1 victories in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) on Arc day at Longchamp. "He was huge for us," said Fahey. "We always knew he was very talented. I went the easy route taking the sales race with him, but we were always going to go to the Lagardere – it was the plan halfway through the season – and he didn't let us down. I never thought he'd get beat that day. It's amazing when you have so much confidence in a horse going into a race. It was a turning point for us and a great day. He had natural speed, which all good horses do, and he seemed to be putting that into his stock as well. He's had a five-furlong Group 1 winner and a mile-and-six Group 1 winner; he was passing everything on. I had a very small part to play there, but every day I was looking to see what he had running. Everyone in the yard was taking a huge interest in him. It was a rags-to-riches story and they're always the best ones. I feel sorry for Coolmore and all the team there, especially those closest to him because he was a wonderful-natured and kind horse."

IRE: Blackbeard colt tops day one at Tatts Ireland September Yearling Sale

Tattersalls Ireland continued to ride the crest of a wave on Tuesday as the September Yearling Sale got off to a remarkably buoyant start. The only split in opinion on the state of trade in Fairyhouse was that some felt prices were “strong”, while others went a step further by describing the market as “crazy”. By the close of play, 240 yearlings had been offered and 223 found a buyer for a rock-solid clearance rate of 93 per cent. In turn, those transactions saw turnover hit €9,833,500 (approx. AU$, a massive 50 per cent year-on-year increase. The average was also up a whopping 49 per cent at €44,095 (approx. AU$, while the median went even further, climbing fully 55 per cent to €38,000 (approx. AU$), having been €24,500 on this day 12 months ago. The market was headed by a colt from the debut crop of Coolmore’s Blackbeard (No Nay Never) who went the way of Ted Durcan at €165,000 (approx. AU$) late in the day. The youngster was presented by Peter Nolan Bloodstock and is out of Spirit Bear, a daughter of Smart Strike (Mr Prospector) who shares the further generations of her page with the influential Rafha (Kris).

ANZ News

We love our streaks in racing, and in breeding too, and the joyously-named Yum (Ghaiyyath) extended a remarkable one on Saturday.

By winning the Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at her fourth start - putting herself in markets for the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) - the John McArdle-trained filly lengthened the sequence of stakes-producing dams on her female line, to a remarkable eight in a row.

It started even before her 81-year-old breeder Ken Breese was born, in 1937, with the birth of British mare Phaetusa (Hyperion). She had Greek Justice (Fair Trial), who won the King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) in its second post-war running in 1947. It was a Principal Race, 30-odd years before the black type rungs appeared, but is now a Group 1.

Phaetusa is Yum’s eighth dam, having also thrown Court Fantasy (Court Martial) in 1957. Court Fantasy came to Australia and outstripped her mum by throwing two fillies who each won a black type race at Caulfield, in Mona Nursery Stakes (1000m) victor Star Fantasy (Star Affair) and Lemon Twist (Orgoglio), who won the Debutante Stakes of 1970 when it was an 800-metre scamper.

Star Fantasy begat Yum’s fifth dam, Golden Fantasy (Golden Orange), who kept the run going by taking Caulfield’s Victoria Handicap (1400m) in 1977, in the twilight of the Principal Race era.

Golden Fantasy became the fourth straight stakes producer of the line when her son Official Receiver (Bold Flip) won two Listed races and a Group 3 in Perth in the early 1980s, following up when daughter Brass (Prince True) won a Listed there as well.

In 1989 Golden Fantasy bore Mere Fancy (Noalcoholic). She’s where Breese comes in, buying her privately in the early 1990s.

Mere Fancy only had four foals and was sold off to China in 1998, but the third one was Tickle My (Perugino). Breese and family were left to race that filly, since her offset knees meant she wouldn’t get to a yearling sale - a family trait that’s turned out to be quite profitable for the breeder.

Trained by Bruce Purcell, Tickle My became the undoubted star of this successful line, claiming five black type events up to 2100 metres, and headed by the 2003 Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley, in which she’d run second the year before.

Sent to the breeding barn for Breese, Tickle My threw Snitz (Snitzel), winner of Gosford’s Takeover Target Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in 2020.

Nine years before the Takeover Target winner she’d had Take All Of Me (Jeune), Yum’s second dam, whose third foal was I’ll Have A Bit (Smart Missile).

Trained by McArdle, I’ll Have A Bit won the Euclase Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and The National Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville, and ran third in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m).

And now Take All Of Me’s first foal, Dream Food (Snitzel), has carried the sequence to eight straight stakes-producing mares, thanks to Yum.

The filly and her first three dams were bred by Breese, who grew up in Wangaratta, worked in the 1950s as a lad in the stables there of Hal Hoysted - he of the famed dynasty now up to its umpteenth trainer in Brisbane-based Matt Hoysted - and later built an engineering firm that allowed his vault into breeding and racing.

Breese still works at his Melbourne-based engineering firm four days a week. “When you retire, you die,” he says. Speaking to him by phone feels like speaking not to an octogenarian but a 40-year-old, which is in fact around the ages of his sons Jarah and Tylah, who comprise the ownership of Yum with Breese’s wife Jenny, and Jarah’s childhood friend Ravi Sharma.

It’s a great family (and friend) affair, and the owners are now eagerly looking forward to the rest of the spring and beyond for potential stayer Yum, as well as the breeding future after that.

This recent line of Breese’s has come about almost incidentally.

“We owned a mare about 30 years ago called Rich Habit,” he says of that Purcell-trained galloper, another black type winner, of the 1988 VRC Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m).

“We decided we didn’t want to sell her, so we bought a farm to keep her on in western Gippsland, near Cranbourne.”

Breese decided to buy a few more mares to populate the farm. His brood built up to around 16 mares at one point, but has scaled back to just four, kept at Tasmania’s Armidale Stud.

One of Breese’s original acquisitions was Mere Fancy, a merely unfancy seven-start maiden, but who, as we know, hailed from a successful line of broodmares. She gave more in the breeding barn than on the track, but just a little more.

“We sold her pretty early because she had two or three foals in a row whose legs weren’t very good,” Breese tells It’s In The Blood. “We were trying to sell yearlings but we couldn’t get her stock into a yearling sale.

“Tickle My was the classic example. We even had a couple of trainers come to the farm to look at her, but they didn’t like her knees. So we raced her ourselves, thankfully.”

The same went for her daughter, Flemington winner Take All Of Me, who had “terrible knees, which came from her dam”, and Dream Food, who won at Cranbourne and Stony Creek. Both were also trained by Purcell.

Yum did make it to a sale - Magic Millions Tasmania - but again “not a hundred per cent in front”, she was passed in half-way short of her $100,000 reserve.

Little wonder Breese takes a sceptical view of old rules about knees.

“Defects are overrated,” he says. “That’s clearly been our experience, especially with Tickle My and now Yum.

“If you can buy a straight horse you should buy a straight horse, but all things being equal, if they’re offset in front I wouldn’t let it worry me too much.

“Take All Of Me did eventually have to stop racing because of knee issues, but as for Tickle My, it never affected her, or Dream Food. I’d say to be careful, but don’t let an offset knee be the reason that you’d reject a horse.”

In Yum, as with last week’s column subject Revelare (So You Think), we might in time have another quality Australian-bred stayer to fight back against the wave of imported distance horses, albeit one sired by an Irish-bred shuttle stallion.

She’s the first Australian-bred stakes winner for Darley’s Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), who won four Group 1s from 2000 metres to 2400 metres. He shuttled four times from 2021, covering books that started at 103 mares and successively dwindled to 79 last season, and he hasn’t returned this year.

Race Record: 4 Starts 2-0-1 A$144,785.

2 wins at 1400m, A$144,785, in 2025-26, MRC Jim Moloney S., L.

He’s had seven winners from 23 runners with one crop racing in this country, and six individual stakes winners (58 winners) from 128 starters worldwide at 4.7 per cent.

Breese thought outside the box in sending Dream Food to Ghaiyyath, and looks to have been rewarded.

“I just had a gut feeling about Ghaiyyath, in that I wanted to put a little bit of stamina into the Dream Foods,” Breese said.

“Clearly he was a champion horse, and I quite liked his breeding.”

So much so that Breese has repeated the trick for this spring, with Dream Food booked to another son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) from a champion Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare, in Rosemont Stud shuttler Henry Longfellow.

Rosemont will also take another of his mares, a city-winning daughter of Toronado (High Chaparral) and Tickle My, to put to their new sprinting sire Schwarz (Zoustar). In something you don’t see often, Breese completed a circle - and perhaps showed a mischievous sense of humour - by giving that mare the same name as her granddam: Mere Fancy.

Things could get confusing.

“I don’t know how we got the name approved really, since her granddam was also Mere Fancy,” he says with a laugh, “but obviously time had eroded the need to maintain the name.”

Dream Food’s female family already had some stickability, evidenced by Tickle My’s win in Sandown’s Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 2119m). The blend with Ghaiyyath appears to have reinforced it in Yum, after Dream Food had previously borne foals by Impending (Lonhro) and Toronado, to mixed reviews.

Catching the eye in Yum’s pedigree is a 5m x 5m of the great American blue hen Fairy Bridge (Bold Reason). It’s not quite that coveted pairing of her two full-brother sons Sadler’s Wells and Fairy Walk (both by Northern Dancer), but it’s probably the next best thing, in Sadler’s Wells and Perugino (Danzig), the sire of Testa Rossa et al.

Sadler’s Wells comes in as the father of Ghaiyyath’s damsire Galileo, while Perugino enters strongly in the bottom line as sire of third dam Tickle My.

Two more influential American Reine-de-Course mares give the pedigree strength with triple appearances in the seventh and eighth removes: Lalun (Djeddah) - at 8m, 7m x 7m through Never Bend (Nasrullah), Bold Reason x Bold Reason; and Thong (Nantallah) - at 7f, 8m x 7f in the form of Special (Forli), Thatch x Special.

The great Natalma (Native Dancer) takes a heavy hand with 11 appearances, from generations six to eight - ten through Northern Dancer (Nearctic) -  while Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim) appears five times in the ninth generation of a pedigree underpinned by the great stallion Nearco (Pharos), who has 19 spots in the first nine columns.

“She’s a lovely filly,” McArdle says of Yum, who despite being a staying-bred November foal, got to the races as a two-year-old at Bendigo last March, albeit finishing seventh.

“She trialled up really well as a two-year-old, and even though her pedigree says what it says, we took her to the races in the autumn. In hindsight, maybe it wasn’t the best idea. She melted a bit and didn’t let down, so we gave her a nice break.”

After a break, Yum jumped from gate nine of ten over 1150 metres at Geelong in July and flew from the rear for a 1.31-length third in a good form race. She then won by a length at Seymour over 1400 metres as a $2.80 favourite, before taking the Moloney by 0.75 lengths at $21 for regular rider Jamie Mott.

“She looks like she’ll get out to a trip,” McArdle told It’s In The Blood. “Jamie’s very confident she’ll get out to a trip. All the data has her as a 2000-metre or 2400-metre horse, and she’s very strong in her work once she gets into her gear.

“I think she’ll be a better horse next year. She’s certainly heading in the right direction.”
