Emirates Park celebrated a weekend to remember, breeding three individual stakes winners within 24 hours.

The success got off to an impressive start when the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Charm Stone (I Am Invincible), who Emirates Park bred and sold, won the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley, which was then backed up when Manaal (Tassort) and Marhoona (Snitzel) sported Emirates Park’s green and white silks to victory in respective black-type contests at Rosehill the following day.

What's On

“It’s satisfying, not just for myself but for Hussain [Lootah] and Nasser [Lootah],” the operation’s bloodstock manager Bryan Carlson told ANZ News. “It’s a huge passion for them. They love their racing, whether it’s in their colours or not, what they do it for is to produce quality horses and see them run and win. To get a Group 1, Group 2, and a Listed winner all in 24 hours really shows the quality of horse we breed at the farm and the results we’re getting.”

Manaal followed up her last-start win in the Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) with a triumph in the Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m), adding more allure to her CV which already includes Group wins at two, three and now four.

“It’s just great to see her back,” Carlson said. “Last preparation luck wasn’t with her, bad barriers, wet tracks, different reasons, so we gave her a long spell. Her last two starts she’s just been glowing in the mounting yard, and her mindset is right where it needs to be.”

The daughter of Tassort (Brazen Beau), who stands at Newgate in partnership with Emirates, is out of the US-bred Listed winner Red Lodge (Midshipman), who Emirates Park picked up for $500,000 at the Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale in 2018. On Sunday, she was covered by Newgate Farm’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1,200m)-winning stallion Stay Inside (Extreme Choice).

“She was the first American mare we bought and she’s produced Manaal, so hopefully we can go back and buy some more,” Carlson said. “We’ve had a lot of success with American mares, even Marhoona’s great granddam was American. It’s something we’re actively targeting those early two-year-old stakes-winning mares up there that we can bring down here and breed from.”

Meanwhile, Golden Slipper winner Marhoona marked her return from a break with a gritty first-up victory under 58 kilograms in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) against the three-year-olds, breaking the so-called ‘Slipper curse’ in the process.

It’s a huge passion for them. They love their racing, whether it’s in their colours or not, what they do it for is to produce quality horses and see them run and win. To get a Group 1, Group 2, and a Listed winner all in 24 hours really shows the quality of horse we breed at the farm and the results we’re getting."

Bryan Carlson

Bloodstock Manager

She became just the second Golden Slipper winner in the past eight years to add to her resume, with Fireburn (Rebel Dane), who won the juvenile Group 1 in 2022, the last triumphant to do so.

Carlson outlined some lofty targets for the daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), including the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on November 1.

“She had been working well, especially over the last two weeks, so to get her back and win like that first-up was great,” Carlson said. “We’ll look at the Roman Consul Stakes next, and if all goes well, on to the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.”

Carlson also revealed that Marhoona’s dam, the 16-year-old Salma (Encosta De Lago), who has not produced a foal since the filly, was covered by Darley’s multiple Group 1-winning champion Anamoe (Street Boss) last week.

But her CV before the Slipper winner is exceptional. Salma’s first foal, Trojan Harbour (Harbour Watch), was a Listed winner in South Africa, while her second named foal, Salateen (I Am Invincible), was a Listed winner and Group 2 placed. And next in line Hilal (Fastnet Rock) was a Group 2 winner who was placed at the top level.

Marhoona (Credit: Sportpix)

“She hasn’t had a foal for different reasons, nothing in particular, but hopefully this time we get her in foal. She’s a little tricky. She’s always been a lovely type and to produce what she has is exceptional. Even the daughter who’s not a stakes winner [Salaasel], I thought she was Group-class too, could have made five stakes winners.”

Charm Stone was sold by Emirates Park to Sheamus Mills Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $1.55 million and she became the first Group 1 winner out of Najoom (Northern Meteor). The daughter of Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) is heading to Newgate Farm’s star stallion, Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), this season.

“It was very satisfying,” Carlson said. “Those types of fillies are hard to sell, because they’re hard to buy and hard to breed. When we sold her, it was a commercial decision, we’ve got to be seen to sell as well as race our own. We’ve still got four sisters to her and Najoom herself. It’s a family that’s going to go from strength to strength. One of our aims is to protect our families and breed quality.”

With success in both the ring and on the racetrack, Emirates Park is placing greater emphasis on racing longevity for its fillies, with both Manaal and Marhoona expected to go to stud in 2026, though the latter may stay in training pending her spring campaign.

“Over the past few years we’ve had some great mares and fillies, but for different reasons they’ve retired early,” Carlson said. “We’re trying to breed sound, quality horses — and a big part of that is letting them race on, especially if they’re still performing at Group level.”

Looking ahead, Emirates Park is planning another American buying mission, with Carlson confirming they will be active at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and Fasig-Tipton’s equivalent.

“We’re looking every week and we will go back to the Keeneland and Fasig sales in November,” he said. “I’m a huge fan of American stallions, we’ve got a lovely Gun Runner yearling this year out of One More Honey who we’ll retain. The American market is very feasible for us, a good middle market, a good top end.

The weekend’s success reflects Emirates Park’s dual focus on producing commercial yearlings and racing high-quality fillies who can eventually return as valuable broodmares.

“We’re just trying to win Group races and add these fillies to the broodmare band,” Carlson said. “And whether it’s in the ring, the paddock, or on the racetrack, we want to breed families that stand the test of time.”

Waller mares set for Turnbull

Via Sistina (Credit: Racing Photos)

Chris Waller is confident his star mares Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Aeliana (Castelvecchio) can rebound from their Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) runs when they meet again in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington. The pair will have their third clash of the campaign in the $750,000 contest, with Waller confirming Damian Lane has been booked to partner Aeliana, while James McDonald will again ride Via Sistina. “They both had a gallop on Saturday morning at Flemington and both were perfect,” Waller said. “James [McDonald] is going to ride Via and Damian (Lane) will ride Aeliana. It's quite likely they will run together.” The mares first faced off this preparation in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick, where Via Sistina successfully defended her crown, before Aeliana finished second and Via Sistina third behind Mr Brightside (Bullbars) in the Makybe Diva. Via Sistina will bid to secure successive Turnbull Stakes victories, having bounced back from a similar setback in the Makybe Diva last year to narrowly defeat stablemate Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) in the Flemington feature. Waller could also be represented by Land Legend (Galileo), with Birdman (Free Eagle), Moira (Ghostzapper), River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) and Valiant King (Roaring Lion) among his other entries. Tony Gollan’s Antino (Redwood), Melbourne Cup favourite Sir Delius (Frankel) and Caulfield Cup favourite Half Yours (St Jean) are also nominated.

Raging Force to contest Schillaci

Peter Snowden remains confident Raging Force (Cosmic Force) can be a factor in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) despite bypassing the traditional lead-up. The trainer is weighing up an unconventional route to the Flemington feature, with next Saturday’s Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield a likely target against older horses. Snowden confirmed he will not send the Cosmic Force (Deep Field) gelding south for this weekend’s Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and has contemplated a trial before his next race start, following his below-par Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) performance. "He had a gut-buster," Snowden said of the Run To The Rose, where Raging Force went too hard in front and faded to finish seventh, beaten four and a half lengths by Tempted (Street Boss). "He went way too hard the other day. I gave him an easy week and he’s nice and bright again now. The trial is nothing more than just a jump out and relax him." Raging Force had surged into Coolmore contention with four consecutive wins prior to his Rosehill flop and remains firmly on Snowden’s radar for the Flemington feature.

Tentyris set for Danehill return

Anthony and Sam Freedman’s Tentyris (Street Boss) will make his seasonal return in Saturday week’s Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) after a pleasing Flemington jumpout over 800 metres on Thursday. "He was good this morning, really happy with how he went," Sam Freedman told Racing.com. "All being well, he'll line up next Saturday (Danehill) and he's going to have improvement in him being his seasonal return and he hasn't run for a while, but he seems to be moving well and is in a good headspace. He had a stress fracture behind [last autumn after Todman Stakes win]. We gave him all the time he needed. His rehab went very smoothly and he's had a nice steady build-up and he's come back a lot bigger and stronger. He's taken a little while to start to screw down and get fit but he's a very different horse to what he was as a two-year-old. He's holding really good condition and seems to have strengthened up, so it all bodes well for his spring prep. The Danehill's going to be a difficult race. You are going to have a lot of race-fit horses up and going and our thinking the whole way through has been to be the fresh horse on the scene for the Coolmore. He'll not blow the cobwebs out, but he'll have a nice run next week and then just build into his prep."

Rosberg gains straight-track experience

Rosberg (Credit: Racing Photos)

Clinton McDonald believes Rosberg (Deep Field) will take good benefit from his Flemington jumpout despite finishing fourth of four on Thursday morning. "We just brought him here for the experience," McDonald told Racing.com. "He wasn't here to win the trial. I said to Benny [Melham] under no circumstances - just let him be on the bridle and don't touch him. He had a good experience today and he'll come through that well nine days out from the race. Benny said he loved it. He's one of those horses who is a quick learner and I think he'll be better second time down [the straight]. There's an X-factor about him. He's a special horse we feel on what he shows at home and what he can do. He knows what it's about now. He's a very cruisy customer. He doesn't worry about too much but you can just see with his fitness, he's tightened up nicely and he'll be ready to roll."

Jimmy Recard to sport blinkers in Danehill

Ciaron Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull says Jimmy Recard (I Am Invincible) will wear blinkers in the Danehill Stakes after a third-place effort in Thursday’s Flemington jumpout. "They didn't go much speed," Turnbull told Racing.com. "It was a bit of a four [furlongs], one [furlong] affair but he had a jumpout last Monday so we've been on top of him. Today was more just a trip away and a little bit of bridle work and a little bit more practice with these shades [blinkers] and they will be the addition in the Danehill. He was very free in his action, clean in the wind and fitness is fine so it's just trying to get him as best we can going into next Saturday. He's always been touted as a blinker horse and we've held off, but now we've had these couple of runs his fitness is better, so we thought it was the right time. He's had a very well thought-out preparation. He's a nice colt who's definitely on the up and he's got improvement in him."

Baraqiel to spell after Manikato second

Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin’s Group 1-winning sprinter Baraqiel (Snitzel) will head for a short break after his second placing in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), with trainer Troy Corstens revealing he had jarred up after last Friday’s feature. The Bennett-racing owned gelding, who didn’t debut until age five due to injury setbacks, loomed as a major threat at the home turn but narrowly held on for second but will now be given a short spell ,ruling him out of any late spring targets including The Everest (1200m). “He’s actually jarred up a little after Friday night, so we’re going to give him a little break,” Corstens told Racing.com. “All scans and x-rays are good, which is the important thing, but he’s just pulled up a little bit sore. When he came around the corner, his action changed, and he wasn’t quite the same horse, I knew straight away something was up. He’s still going to the beach at the moment, but we're just going to do the right thing by the horse, he comes first always.” Corstens stressed that the situation was far from grave, unlike the suspensory injury that saw Baraqiel miss the 2025 autumn. “It’s nothing serious – he’ll just be out for three or four weeks, and then we’ll be getting him ready for hopefully a big autumn,” he said.

Lady Shenandoah ‘well’ after Manikato defeat

Waller has provided an update on star mare Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), who was unplaced for the first time in her career when fourth in Friday night's Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). "She’s bounced out of it really well," Waller said. "We had the vet go over her (on Saturday morning), he was very happy. She ate up [on Friday night], which most horses don't, but she did. It was just a messy race and outside barrier around a tight-turning track but she will be ready for three weeks' time." Lady Shenandoah will likely step out at the star-studded Randwick trial session on October 7 ahead of running in the The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick 11 days later.

Treasurethe Moment to continue spring campaign after Feehan run

Matt Laurie has acknowledged the disappointment of Treasurethe Moment’s (Alabama Express) defeat on Friday night but is now focused on having the Group 1-winning filly ready for her spring targets. Treasurethe Moment, who missed the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) due to a mild case of colic, returned in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley as a $1.50 favourite, where she settled second behind returning Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and despite a strong finish, could not overhaul the 2023/24 Australian Horse of the Year. “I was pretty disappointed at the time; I don’t like losing any race,” Laurie told SEN. “I was more hopeful that Pride Of Jenni wasn’t back at her best. Going in, a month between runs with a setback, wasn’t ideal. Maybe that might have made the difference. I was very happy with Treasure, she’s clearly run really well, but Ciaron’s got Jenni going very well. Treasurethe Moment’s sectionals were very good. Everything from the half-mile onwards was quicker than Jenni. She just gets that start on you and you’ve just got to be really mindful that you’re not taking your horse out of its comfort zone trying to win one race. You want to win every one of them, of course, but you’ve still got to make sure she comes through it well on the other side and carries on to more Group 1s.” Laurie confirmed she has “pulled up really well” and is on track for her main spring target, the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at The Valley on October 25. “She trotted out nice and sound, she seems perfectly happy, so play on,” Laurie said. Prior to the Cox Plate, Treasurethe Moment will contest the Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield on October 11. “We’ll go there. I just think another run is probably warranted, then we go into a Cox Plate satisfied, provided she runs well in the Might And Power,” Laurie added.

Vinrock to target Caulfield Guineas after Stutt Stakes setback

An hour before Treasurethe Moment was beaten, stablemate Vinrock (I Am Invincible) also failed to cross the line first in his assignment. The Group 1 winner went into the Stutt Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at the Valley as a $1.65 chance, but was slow to begin and then over-raced before making contact with Hillier (Zoustar). He was held up approaching the 200-metre mark and when he finally gained clear running, made contact with Bingi (Snitzel). “That was a disaster and set the tone for the night, unfortunately,” Laurie said. “We wanted to sit outside the lead. I couldn’t see him that first furlong, I didn’t know what had happened. It was just a mess after that. He was a little bit sore after the race, but the next day, we trotted him up with our vets and he was perfectly fine. He was very bright and well this morning; it appeared as though he didn’t even go around, the way he was carrying on. We’ll just have to put a line through it and move on.” Vinrock, a winner of four of his six starts, is set to chase a second Group 1 success in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on October 11. “His strength is free-rolling and increasing [the tempo]. He’s not an off-the-speed and let rip-type horse. We know his pattern, it was just unfortunate he put his head down right as the barriers opened; there was really not much [jockey] Mark [Zahra] could do from that point on,” Laurie said.

Vale My Oberon

Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) winner My Oberon (Dubawi) has died due to illness, trainers Annabel and Rob Archibald have confirmed. “We were deeply saddened this weekend to lose one of our stable stars and all-time favourites, My Oberon, who passed away suddenly after a short illness,” the stable confirmed via social media. “He was a wonderful horse for us and his owners, and he took us all on an amazing journey. From winning the Group 2 Crystal Mile, running 2nd behind Mr Brightside in the Doncaster, placing in last year’s King Charles and to a trip to Hong Kong, he was a very special horse to everyone involved with him.” The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) banked $3.78 million in career earnings and six races across a 36-start career, which began in Ireland with William Haggas, joining Archibald in 2022, and won the Crystal Mile on his local debut under John Allen, which would prove to be his only local victory.

Stanley sent for scans

Talented young rider Jett Stanley has been transported to hospital and is set for scans after an incident at the Cranbourne jumpouts on Monday morning. The 21-year-old will have scans to determine the extent of a possible shoulder injury.

Wolfgang chasing cup ticket

Wolfgang (Puccini), who races as Mister Wolfgang in Australia, will get his first opportunity to earn a golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when he heads to Flemington on Saturday. The Peter and Shaun McKay-trained gelding will contest The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m), with the winner earning an automatic spot on the first Tuesday in November. he seven-year-old finished last first-up over 1700 metres at Flemington earlier this month before backing up seven days later at Caulfield where he finished 12th in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). “His second run was good,” Peter McKay said. “Even though he only beat four or five horses home, from where he was in the race, there wasn’t a lot of changing going on. Where they were turning the corner is where they finished. His sectionals were quite good from the half-mile home, so we were rapt with that.” McKay has received positive reports from Shaun, who is with the horse in Melbourne, and they are hoping for a bold showing from the gelding this weekend. “We are pretty happy with the way he is going into it,” McKay said. “Daniel Stackhouse is going to ride him again, so at least he knows him, and we are hoping he can run in the first half dozen on Saturday. There are still a couple of races after that to find out if we can get into the Melbourne Cup, and if not, there is some good money on offer over there.”

International

102 for Kingman

Royal Chapel (2 f ex Gingham by Quality Road) became the 102nd individual stakes winner for Juddmonte Farms-based sire Kingman (Invincible Spirit) when she landed the Grand Criterium de Bordeaux - Prix du Hong Kong Jockey Club (Listed, 1600m) at Croan on Monday. The filly defeated Waiting For You (Bated Breath) by a neck with Zambezi (Zelzal) finishing a further three-quarters of a length away in third. Bred and raced by Manzanita Stables, the filly is out of US Listed winner Gingham (Quality Road).

16 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore Stud shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) scored his 16th individual winner when Augustus Gloop (2 c ex Minnaloushe by Lawman) broke his maiden at Newcastle on Sunday. Trained by James Fanshawe, the colt was having the third start of his career and he defeated Major Neigh Sayer (No Nay Never) by two and a half lengths with Foxtrot Flyer (Sergei Prokofiev) another neck away in third. Bought by Noel Wilson for 90,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2024, the colt is out of the winning mare Minnaloushe (Lawman) making him a three-quarter brother to Listed winner She Do. St Mark’s Basilica’s progeny is headed by May Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) winner Aylin. He is standing at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Please hold

Magic Carpet (Credit: NZB)

By Lloyd Jackson

@ANZ_News

Thank you for calling Rich Hill Stud. Due to Saturday’s wonderful results our lines are busy. Please hold.”

Rich Hill Stud may well be experiencing a rush of calls about now after their Proisir (Choisir) sired the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1,1600) winner Waitak and Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) supplied the Hawkes Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Magic Carpet.

Proisir is well established as one of the country’s most sought after sires. He has a New Zealand Sire Championship (2023-24) plus 46 stakes performers, 23 of which are stakes winners, to back up that status.

Waitak is one of six to attain an elite-level victory with the Howden Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) his second, adding to his Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) win two seasons ago. He joins the quality mares Levante, Legarto and Prowess as the sire’s multiple Group 1 winners.

Waitak enjoyed a top class autumn earlier this year ending his five-year-old career with a Group 2 double including the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m) at Trentham. This latest win could be the forerunner to an even better six-year-old season. Saturday’s mile win was achieved in solid style as he drew the outside barrier. From the 600 metres he improved to be closer but entering the straight jostled with Tuxedo (Tivaci). Leader, gritty mare La Crique (Vadamos), shot to the lead and appeared to have the race in control at the 200 metres. However, Waitak had balanced up and from the 150 metres he ate up La Crique’s advantage and inside the 50 metres had her covered.

For Rich Hill Stud the day rivalled last New Year’s Day at Ellerslie when Satono Aladdin, Vadamos (Monsun) and Proisir provided the winners of three Group 2 races. Saturday’s Howden Mile result marked a Group 1 quinella but La Crique’s sire, Vadamos has not shuttled to New Zealand since 2023.

Waitak’s win takes his earnings to just shy of $1.2 million from seven career wins. He is one of two winners from his dam Repo Bay, a daughter of Rich Hill Stud’s Shocking (Street Cry).

Repo Bay was offered for sale carrying Waitak but was passed in with a reserve of $20,000. Her second foal, Crackercol, is also by Proisir and is a winner while the mare has a yearling filly by Staphanos (Deep Impact). In 2024 she was covered by King Of Comedy (Kingman) but what are the odds that she is back at Rich Hill to visit Proisir again?

Repo Bay’s granddam Star (Danehill) ranks as a half-sister to two stakes winners including the good winner Entrancing (Bright Finish), a Group 2 winner in Perth. The next dam is champion filly Desirable (Without Fear), an outstanding juvenile who won seven races at that age including both the AJC and VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and later scored the Flemington’s Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), three of her ten wins.

Making an impact

Satono Aladdin (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)

Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) is making quite a mark in Australasia, Magic Carpet being his 12th individual stakes winner. Very surprising is that all of Satono Aladdin’s stakes winners are confined to the southern hemisphere. He has yet to sire a stakes winner in Japan, hence the stud’s promotional material concentrates on that fact despite the stallion getting an abundance of winners (159) from his northern hemisphere stud duties, three of which have achieved black-type.

His standout performer remains dual Group 1 Oaks winner Pennyweka but Magic Carpet has the potential to greatly improve his very promising record. Saturday’s Guineas was just the colt’s third start and he must rate highly with his connections as he lined up in the feature off two third placings at maiden level.

A debut for third on Foxbridge Plate day a month ago was noteworthy but his second start at Taupo saw him lead then headed only to fight back late for another third. For the Guineas he was ridden more patiently and was poised in behind the leaders turning for home. After taking a gap he had a look around as if not knowing quite what to do but soon settled into his work. Over the last 100 metres he smoothed his action and went to the line well. There is plenty to like about the colt, especially when he learns what racing is all about. Trainer Stephen Marsh affirmed as much, commenting: “He is going in the right direction and has plenty to come and go on.”

The colt’s schedule includes a tilt at the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) but will likely return to Te Rapa for the James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m) as his final prep.

The Stephen Marsh-Dylan Johnson team paid handsomely for Magic Carpet, outlaying $320,000 at the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. He was a big bold yearling and has clearly furnished. He is one of two winners from the Tavistock (Montjeu) mare From Eden, herself a half-sister to Melbourne Group 2 winner The Fuzz (Danasinga). Another half-sister to From Eden is Songbird (Black Minnaloushe), dam of Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 16500m) winner Stolen Dance (Alamosa), one of her ten winners.

Magic Carpet’s Listed placed granddam Drama Queen (Prince Of Praise) ranks as a half-sister to triple Group winner Kainui Belle (Kashani) who placed in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) as well as the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Fell in

Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (Street Cry) kept his name in the headlines when his son Evaporate landed the Sandown Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), falling in to hold on gallantly for his sixth career win.

Rider Blake Shinn was in the unenviable position of being caught three deep early so decided to take matters into his own hands and shot the four-year-old to the front, ensuring a solid pace. It’s a very long way down the Sandown straight and Evaporate was vulnerable all the way to the post, holding on by the skin of his teeth. To his credit, he would not yield and his fighting qualities were rewarded. It was a gutsy effort.

The three-quarter brother to Belluci Babe (Per Incanto) has banked almost $1.6 million and one of his shareholders is Sam Williams of Little Avondale Stud. Per Incanto blends well with this family which traces to the original foundation mare of the Williams family’s Te Parae Stud which morphed into Little Avondale Stud.

In 1941 at Trentham, Sam’s grandmother Nancy sold the property’s first yearling from her mare Haggada (Rabbi), ancestress of Evaporate. Eight generations have passed since then but according to Arion Pedigrees, in the interim Haggada is responsible for some 320 individual winners including 38 stakes winners. The best of five Group 1 winners is Candide (Sound Reason) , winner of the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Evaporate’s great granddam Sound Lover (Sound Reason) is a sister to Candide.

Metro wins

Evaporate was the sole New Zealand bred at Sandown but in Sydney New Zealand studs provided three of the ten Rosehill winners kicking off proceedings with Meridiana (Preferment) who took her record to two wins (both in town) from five starts.

Meridiana broke her maiden on debut at Kensington in March. She made a big impression that day but the win was not unexpected as she had won two trials leading up to the debut. Next start she was fourth in the South Pacific Classic (Listed, 1400m) then third in the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm. At her last start as a 3YO she failed to handle the heavy conditions for the Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed, 1800m).

Fresh up on Saturday she gave them all a healthy start in the Benchmark 72 over 1300 metres but put in some massive strides over the last 100 metres to score impressively. This mare is going places. Sourced for $3,200 off Gavelhouse, Meridiana has now banked $109,950 and is already a bargain buy.

She is the second winner from North And South (Strategic Image), a ten-times winner who landed the Levin Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and ran third in the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m). Given that info she really was a steal but good luck to the purchasers for taking the gamble as well as monitoring Gavelhouse.com.

Lightly raced She’s Unusual (Unusual Suspect) scored her biggest win yet, her fifth in just 13 starts, running away to land the Benchmark 88 over 1900 metres.

The now six-year-old mare won on debut at Awapuni two years ago at which time she was sold privately but in the meantime has added wins at Newcastle, Kensington, Randwick and now Rosehill, taking her earnings beyond $300,000.

Letham Stud’s Unusual Suspect (Unusual Heat) has sired winners in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

She’s Unusual is the only foal of La Fille En Jeu (Mettre En Jeu) to race. La Fille En Jeu won nine times including a notable back-to-back double at Riccarton when taking out the South Island Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and the Easter Cup (Listed, 1600m). A black-type win for She’s Unusual must be just around the corner.

None covered more ground in the TAB Highway Handicap (1500m) than Poisen Point (Swiss Ace) but the four-year-old stuck to her guns resolutely to pick up her third win in 11 starts. Caught three wide the entire journey she would have been forgiven if she’d folded in the straight. Instead, she got to the front at the 100 metres then braved it out to the line in a tough effort.

The mare is a graduate of Westbury Stud’s draft of the 2023 NZB Ready To Run Sale and was sold for $35,000. Saturday’s win took her earnings to $121,780. Poisen Point’s dam is a half-sister to Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sofia Rosa (Makfi).
