WA’s stellar stallion set to rise in the east with West Star

Western Australia’s dominant sire Playing God (Blackfriars) will get a chance to land a blow on the eastern seaboard this Saturday when his speedy son West Star lines up in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), after which trainer Simon Miller will prepare the four-year-old for a “redemption mission” in the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m).

What's On

Playing God has been crowned WA’s champion sire for the past three seasons, taking over the mantle from his famous father Blackfriars (Danehill) who was named the state’s pre-eminent stallion 12 years running from 2010 to 2022 - with the last five of those titles earned posthumously after he passed away at the end of 2017.

Playing God is firmly on track to retain his crown this campaign with his progeny having already collected 20 wins - which is more than his prestigious peers Savabeel (Zabeel) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), who have both sent out more Australian runners than the Darling View Thoroughbreds resident.

Playing God is yet to celebrate any black type success this season - principally as there haven’t been any stakes races in Western Australia - but that could all change when West Star makes his debut down the famous Flemington straight on the undercard on Turnbull Stakes Day.

Suitably stellar in both name and nature, West Star became his sire’s 20th individual black type winner when he led home a Playing God quinella in last year’s Belgravia Stakes (Listed, 1200m), before he put his more seasoned rivals to the sword as the $2.30 favourite in the Northam Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) earlier this year.

It was the manner of that latter performance at Northam in May, allied to a commendable run against interstate raiders in the $5 million Quokka (1200m) at his previous start, that persuaded Miller to return to his former home town of Melbourne in search of more spring riches.

West Star made the trip east last week to acclimatise to his new surroundings, with Miller jetting in on Tuesday afternoon to oversee his final preparations ahead of Saturday’s contest, run under set weights and penalties.

The $175,000 purchase will be piloted by his fellow Perth native Damian Lane, with the pair set to jump from barrier 11 against some highly credentialled rivals led by Lindsay Park’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner War Machine (Harry Angel).

Like War Machine, West Star is also resuming but the comparisons - at least for now - perhaps end there, which is reflected in their respective quotes of $4.50 (favourite) for the former and $13 for West Star in the early markets.

However, having expended some nervous energy at the Flemington jumpouts shortly after arriving in Melbourne, Miller believes West Star is quite capable of embellishing a fearsome fresh record of two wins and a pair of placings from four first-up starts.

“It’s his first trip away and he’s handled everything really well and settled in beautifully, so it’s all gone to plan so far,” Miller told ANZ News.

“He was probably a little bit immature earlier in his career, but at the back end of his last prep he really furnished into a proper racehorse so that’s when we first formed the idea of bringing him over to the east for the spring carnival. In the Northam Stakes, he sat three-wide without cover and still managed to pull away from the older horses, so at that point I thought he might be the real deal.

“The only time in his career that he’s missed the money was in The Quokka, when he sat too close to a hot speed and all the leaders blew up. So he’s very consistent, but the big test comes on Saturday. There are no hiding places in Melbourne during the spring but I wouldn’t be bringing him all the way over here if I wasn’t confident he could measure up.

“He’ll certainly be fit enough first-up and his work on Wednesday morning was perfect, so we’re right on track for Saturday’s race. He’s got a big stride, a great turn of foot and a good brain on him, so they’re not bad attributes to have.”

After the Gilgai Stakes, West Star will be set for either the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield or be loaded onto a truck to Sydney to contest the Silver Eagle (1300m), with a return to Randwick pencilled in for his date with destiny in the Golden Eagle on Saturday, November 1.

By his own admission, Miller is desperate to have another crack at the highly lucrative contest after the heartache he endured with Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni) back in 2023.

Off the back of consecutive stakes wins in the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), in the process beating Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) in track record time, Amelia’s Jewel jumped the $3.70 favourite in the Golden Eagle. However, luck certainly deserted Miller’s golden girl that fateful day at Rosehill, as her prospects were cruelled when she encountered significant interference which might have floored lesser animals.

Amelia’s Jewel picked herself up to finish 11th behind Obamburumai (Discreet Cat) but the experience understandably left a rather bitter taste in Miller’s mouth, which was subsequently exacerbated when the mare left his care to join Annabel Neasham’s stable.

However, the genial horseman is not one to dwell on past disappointments and is determined to exorcise any lingering demons with West Star.

“We thought we had the right horse for the Golden Eagle two years ago, I was really confident heading in then the mare got completely bowled off in the run,” said Miller.

“I’m not saying West Star is as good as she was, but I do think he’s got plenty of ability so we’re definitely coming back for redemption this time. Because he had a tendency to over-race early in his career, we kept him at sprint trips but now that he’s learned to settle and pace himself much better, it opens up a few more doors for us.

“I think 1500 metres in the Golden Eagle should be right up his alley, only time will tell if he gets up to a mile but he’s so dynamic over the shorter distances that we may look to stick to the sprint races when we bring him back for the Perth Carnival in the summer. Depending on what he does over here in the spring, we’d be looking at either running him in the Winterbottom Stakes, the Railway Stakes or the Gold Rush, which shows you just how versatile he is.”

West Star’s versatility is very much in keeping with the progeny produced by Playing God, who are generally adept at sprint trips but have also excelled in the middle distance range, as witnessed by Kay Cee’s triumph in the 2019 Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) - a race won on two occasions by her father.

Unlike, say, a stallion such as So You Think (High Chaparral) who tends to produce foals in his image, with Playing God it’s rather more difficult to pinpoint horses that are typical of the breed, given that they come in all shapes and sizes. But what they generally have in common is an inherent will to win passed onto them by their father, who amassed eight career victories ranging in distance from 1100 metres to 1800 metres.

Miller has a handful of Playing God progeny in residence at his Ascot base, and while he is an avid admirer of the stallion he admits that the discrepancy in their appearance and stature can sometimes make it difficult to sort through his yearlings at the sales.

“He [West Star] fits the style of horse I’m looking for which is why we were keen to get him, but I do find the Playing Gods quite hard to buy in general,” said Miller.

“They come in all shapes and sizes so they don’t always look particularly athletic or built for running. I had a friend over from Melbourne at one of the Perth Sales a couple of years ago, I’d finished all my inspections so I decided to pull all the Playing Gods out to show him how different they are. There were no two yearlings the same, it was like a party mix.

“But it doesn’t stop them from running fast, so if you can find a good one then you’re going to have a lot of fun. His stats back home are just phenomenal, so he’s clearly doing a great job and hopefully West Star can put him on the map in the east this spring.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Wide draw for Pier in Epsom bid

Co-trainer and part-owner Darryn Weatherley remains upbeat about Pier’s (Proisir) prospects in Saturday’s Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) despite being handed a wide draw. The Matamata-based horseman, who trains in partnership with his daughter Briar, was left with barrier 13 of 14 for the Randwick feature but is putting his faith in multiple Group 1-winning jockey Ethan Brown to negate the draw. “He knows how to steer them, but I didn’t help him by putting my hand in the barrel and coming up with barrier 13 out of 14,” Weatherley said. “It’s the biggest worry, but in saying that he’s a big-striding horse and it’s a long run down the back straight. The hardest one to beat will obviously be the mare [Autumn Glow] and she’s drawn outside us, so at least Ethan can keep an eye on where she’s at. I would rather him cover a bit of ground and not have a hard luck story, if he gets a fair crack at them then I can’t complain.” Pier heads into the Epsom off a strong first-up third in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill. “I couldn’t be happier with the horse, he’s really bright and we had this race picked out after he won at Eagle Farm [The Wayne Wilson] back in June,” Weatherley said. “He was super in the Theo Marks, it was very much like the BRC Sprint when he ran third and then won the Wayne Wilson. He got back and hit the line nicely and I knew he was a bit pretty, he was 552 kilograms leading into that race and I put him on the scales this morning [Wednesday] and he was 542 kilograms. Everything depends on Saturday, there are options and if he went really well there’s the King Charles Stakes in a couple of weeks or the Craven Plate in three weeks. He also holds a nom for the Cox Plate, but that’s pie in the sky stuff at the moment. He’d have to do something pretty special to warrant putting him on a truck to go to Melbourne to take on Via Sistina and the like.”

Quick back-up to see Encap at his best

Encap (Credit: Sportpix)

Encap (Capitalist) will attempt to emulate his performance in April’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) when he lines up in Saturday’s Epsom Handicap at Randwick. The Gary Portelli-trained gelding finished a strong third off a four-day back-up in the Randwick mile, and Portelli is hoping a seven-day turnaround this weekend can produce an even better effort. “In the Doncaster he raced four days before and he really hit the line that day,” Portelli said. “He's a funny horse…. He just switches off but if we can get him switched on for the weekend, maybe that quick back-up might be what he needs.” Encap drew barrier six on Tuesday, but Portelli is more focused on race tempo than his starting gate. “He won't go early and he comes home late,” he said. “We need some speed on and if it's a truly run race he will be joining in at some point. He ran a huge race in the Doncaster and if he puts that together again, he should be very hard to beat.”

Tulloch Lodge chasing third-straight Breeders’ Plate trifecta

Gai Waterhouse has boldly predicted Tulloch Lodge could once again sweep the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on Saturday, a feat the stable has achieved the past two years. “I think we’ll trifecta the Breeders’ Plate,” Waterhouse, who trains in partnership with Adrian Bott, said. “I think we’ve got a horse that could easily be a Golden Slipper horse and I said that before Pierro won the Golden Slipper.” Last year, the stable produced King Kirk (Ole Kirk) to defeat Tempestuous (Extreme Choice) and North England (Farnan), 12 months after Espionage (Zoustar) led home stablemates Straight Charge (Written By) and Prost (Snitzel). This year the stable will saddle Eviction Notice (Stay Inside), I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs) and Revengeance (Hellbent). Eviction Notice, a $375,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling by Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), was the standout of last week’s Randwick juveniles trials, scoring by 7.82 lengths in 49.53 seconds. “He’s a very, very sharp horse,” Waterhouse said. “He does everything right. He won his trial by seven lengths [and] ran [a] super time.” I’m Ya Huckleberry, a $400,000 Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) colt, clocked 49.54 seconds in his trial win, while $100,000 Inglis Classic graduate Revengeance took his heat in 50.38 seconds. “I’m Ya Huckleberry, he’s a beautiful colt; big and strong, knock you in the nose and go ‘boom’,” Waterhouse said. “The other horse, Revengeance, has just jumped out of the ground since his trial. He had to get at him a little bit to win his trial, but he ran it in very fast time.” Tulloch Lodge will also have three representatives in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) on the same card in Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) filly Shiki, Home Invasion (Home Affairs) and The Wildling (Wild Ruler).

Royal Insignia faces stiffer test in Gilgai

Trainer Grahame Begg admits Royal Insignia (Written Tycoon) faces a tougher assignment when he returns to Flemington for Saturday’s Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). The four-year-old was fourth in the Bobbie Lewis Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on September 13, carrying 53 kilograms from an inside draw, but will rise to 58.5 kilograms under set-weights and penalties conditions this weekend. Star Patrol (Starspangledbanner), who finished ahead of him in the Bobbie Lewis, meets him 3.5 kilograms better off. “He’s not as advantaged at the weights this time around because the Bobbie Lewis was a quality handicap and the Gilgai is set weights and penalties,” Begg said. Despite that, Begg is satisfied with the horse’s condition and believes Saturday’s barrier draw in seven is more suitable. “I don’t think he was advantaged being on the inside of them last time,” he said. “I’m not a big fan of them being on the inside down the Flemington straight, but the horse, he’s going really well. He looks fantastic, but the problem with him is that you can’t get continuity in races. He went a month between his first and second up runs and he then has gone three weeks again for his next run.” Begg is hoping the Flemington track remains in the Good 4 range or better as Royal Insignia chases his first win at the course. Craig Williams retains the ride.

Total of 14 to contest Turnbull

A 14-horse field has been confirmed for Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington, with 2024 winner Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) victor Sir Delius (Frankel) having been handed polar opposite barriers. Via Sistina and James McDonald will attempt to become the first Turnbull winners from barrier one since Northerly (Serheed) in 2002, while Sir Delius and Craig Williams will need to work across from the outside gate of 14. Prominent draws also include Aeliana (Castelvecchio) (five), Half Yours (St Jean) (four) and Antino (Redwood) (six), while Adelaide River (Australia) jumps from nine. Chris Waller has three runners in Land Legend (Galileo) (ten), Moira (Ghostzapper) (11) and River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) (eight), and Ciaron Maher is represented by Zardozi (Kingman) (two) and Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) (seven). Young Werther (Tavistock) (13), Deakin (Australia) (12) and Underwood placegetter Golden Path (Belardo) (three) complete the field. Wide gates have not been a disadvantage in recent years – Via Sistina started from barrier 12 of 16 when winning last year’s Turnbull, while Gold Trip (Outstrip) overcame the widest draw of 16 in 2023.

Legacy Bound, My Gladiola to test returning Tentyris in Danehill

Tentyris (Credit: Sportix)

Tentyris (Street Boss) won’t be allowed to fly under the radar when he makes his return from injury in Saturday’s Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Flemington. The Godolphin colt, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, has not raced since his dominant Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) win in March, having missed the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) due to a stress fracture. Mark Zahra is booked to ride for his comeback. Robbie Griffiths, trainer of unbeaten Danehill contender Legacy Bound (Ole Kirk), said Zahra opting to ride Tentyris over his own horse was telling. “That’s always a concern, when your jockey is two-from-two and has opted for another horse in the race,” he told The Verdict podcast. Flying filly My Gladiola’s (I Am Invincible) trainer John McArdle agreed Tentyris looked the horse to beat. “Tentyris has got the form on the board and been trialling and working really well,” McArdle told Racing.com. “I’ve been keeping an eye on him, here at Mornington, when he has worked here.” However, both trainers are mindful of the depth of talent in the Danehill field. “Obviously Griffo’s horse is unbeaten and Clinton McDonald’s horse [Rosberg] couldn’t have been any more impressive at his first start,” McArdle said. “It doesn’t finish there. It is a very strong field. I think she [My Gladiola] has come on since the Cap D'Antibes, but she’ll have to, facing the field she is facing on Saturday.” Griffiths said Legacy Bound, who will be ridden by Jye McNeil, had made strong progress since his Poseidon Stakes (Listed, 1100m)-winning return. “You’ll see a far better horse on Saturday when he presents in the mounting yard,” he said. “He has come on super and his gallop on Monday morning was first-class and I think we’ve still got an edge of improvement to come. We are very happy with him.”

Skybird out of The Everest

Skybird (Exosphere) has been ruled out of this year’s The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick, less than a week after being announced as an Inglis runner. “Trainer Mitch Freedman today advised that Skybird will not be ready in time to contest The Everest this year as a result of the setback sustained in the Manikato Stakes,” Inglis announced on social media on Wednesday. “While it is disappointing not to have Skybird represent Inglis in the race, the decision has been made in the best interests of the mare. We wish Skybird, Mitch Freedman and her owners all the best and look forward to seeing her back at the races in due course. Inglis will now reassess plans for our slot.” Skybird was last seen in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), where she finished second-last. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare was lame in the left fore. She will require a veterinary clearance before racing again and must also gain stewards’ approval in an official trial after proving difficult to load into the barriers at Moonee Valley.

Proficient makes winning debut for Godolphin

Godolphin’s homebred filly Proficient (Lonhro) made a successful debut at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday, landing the Sportsbet Race Previews Maiden Plate (1000m) for Ben, Will and JD Hayes. Ridden by Michael Dee, the three-year-old wore down eventual third Act Natural (Royal Meeting) in the closing stages before holding off a final late challenge from Final Moment (Hanseatic) to beat that rival by 0.1 lengths. "I actually thought we might have got done, so it's nice to see a photo go our way and get her head down on the line,” Ben Hayes said. “She was a bit new, she got to the front and looked like she was floating a bit, and she definitely wasn't wound up for today. It was a good learning experience and I think she could be one for better races in a couple of starts.” Hayes indicated a race such as the Crockett Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day could be considered. Dee, who partnered the filly in her jumpouts, was also encouraged. “I thought we were going to win a lot easier than what we did, but she just got a little bit lost there late,” he said. “She’s got good natural ability and composes herself well … she’s definitely going to go on with it.” By Lonhro (Octagonal), Proficient is the second winner out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Deft, herself a sister to Group 2 winner Sidestep and a half-sister to Group 1 winners Skilled (Commands) and Willowy (Kermadec).

Sulek breaks through at Sandown

Progressive three-year-old Sulek (Super Seth) recorded his first win at Sandown yesterday, taking out the MRC Foundation Pin & Win Plate (1400m) for trainer Dom Sutton. Ridden by Billy Egan, the gelding settled midfield before finishing strongly to defeat Snitz Sonic (Snitzel) by 0.8 lengths, building on a debut third placing at Mornington last month. “He is still doing a little bit wrong. You could see in the home straight he just wanted to lug in slightly. I think it is just immaturity more than anything, but he definitely has a nice engine,” Sutton said. “He has done it in his trials, that is why we have put the winkers on to help him concentrate and make sure he is going as straight as possible, but with more experience under his belt, he will come good. It looked a little bit messy early, just trying to get a spot and he just got up on the bridle a tad. He just had to bring him back and get him into a rhythm halfway through. Once he found that spot and he dropped his head, it was a pretty painless watch from there. He has a contingent of UK owners in him, who are coming over for the carnival. It would be nice to be able to step him out for them when they arrive. But we will ultimately do what is best by the horse first. They are only three once, so we will just have a look at the calendar and see if there is a nice race for him over Melbourne Cup week.”

Shangri La Boy shows promise with all-the-way Rosehill victory

Shangri La Boy (Pierro), a half-brother to Group 2 winner-turned-stallion Storm Boy (Justify), registered an all-the-way win in the TAB Maiden Plate (1400m) at Rosehill on Wednesday. The three-year-old made amends for his defeat as favourite on debut at Canterbury last month, scoring by 2.2 lengths over Nordic Viking (So You Think) with race favourite Providence (Wootton Bassett) a further 0.9 lengths back in third. Winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus, who partnered Storm Boy to three of his five career wins, said Shangri La Boy was a talent in his own right. “He was a very beautiful horse, Storm Boy. It's hard to find horses that look like him,” Hyeronimus said. “But he's [Shangri La Boy] got his own good attributes this horse. He is [by] Pierro, which might need blinkers in time. But what he's doing at the moment is very nice and I like the way he handles himself. He's so casual, so relaxed, nothing ever bothers him and I'm sure he will build off the back of today's win.” Adrian Bott, who trains the colt in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said he had been a work in progress, requiring five barrier trials before racing, but was beginning to put it all together. “He's going to be a horse that will keep improving as we get out over further. We are just beginning to scratch the surface with his ability,” Bott said. “We will look to test him. How far we can take him this preparation, I'm not sure, but he's well and truly got those steps to take in terms of his career.”

Ripley ready for black-type

Ciaron Maher secured a win in the United Resource Maiden Handicap (1200m) with Too Darn Hot colt Ripley on Wednesday’s Rosehill card, and is already eyeing a step up to black-type company. A $625,000 yearling purchase, Ripley, who races in the Qatar Bloodstock silks, was scoring for the third time of asking as he beat Onmalone (Menari) by 2.1 lengths under Jason Collett. The colt holds a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with Maher confident the three-year-old has always shown above-average ability. “First prep I probably expected a little bit more but it just didn't come to hand for him,” Maher said. “He's a colt. He's by the right stallion so hopefully he keeps progressing the right way and he probably stretches out a bit further now. We will feel our way a little bit. I think he will come on a lot from today. He is still a little bit big and burly but there might be a cheeky stakes race for him.”

Mary Shan set for Breeders’ Stakes

Mary Shan (Credit: Race Images)

Group 2-placed mare Mary Shan (Almanzor) will chase a deserved stakes breakthrough when she contests Saturday’s Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Hawera. She has been stakes-placed on five occasions, including the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m), Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) and the $1 million Aotearoa Classic (Listed, 1600m). Trainer Andrew Forsman has long targeted the Breeders’ Stakes with the five-year-old, who resumes after winning first-up over 1200 metres at Wanganui in August. “Mary Shan is training very well. She had a good gallop yesterday [Tuesday] morning and she is spot on heading into it,” Forsman said. “She has drawn well [barrier four] and I think it is a suitable sort of race. Hopefully she can utilise that draw and put herself in the first half of the field, and she should run really well. It would be nice to make her a stakes winner.” Forsman also has Privy Garden (So You Think) stepping up in trip in the Russell & Yvonne Green Memorial (2000m) at Matamata, while Hard Roca (El Roca) tackles the COMAG LTD 1400 (1400m). “They were just a little sharp for her, those horses at a mile in that company the other day at Trentham,” Forsman said of Privy Garden. “Hopefully the step up to 2000 metres is what she is looking for now.” On Hard Roca, he added: “He has been really good, he just hasn’t had much luck from wide draws. I think his run at Ellerslie the other day was great, so I think he will be very competitive again. He has drawn well [barrier three], I just hope the track isn’t too heavy. He doesn’t mind a bit of a wet track, but we are stepping up to 1400 metres. If it was to be very testing, that would be my only query.”

Moodley set to make raceday return

Leading northern apprentice jockey Triston Moodley is set to return to raceday riding at Avondale next Wednesday, three months after he sustained a head injury at the Waipa trials. The 24-year-old hoop was kicked in the head in the mounting yard at the Te Awamutu track in July and he was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he underwent surgery to have a plate put in his head. He remained in hospital for a week and he has been pleased with the speed of his recovery. “It was pretty quick,” he said. “I got out of hospital after a week and it took me a month to get back on my feet. Since then, it has been onwards and upwards, I am back to normal and I am back riding track work. I am just getting better and better every day. I have been keeping fit through my recovery. I spoke with my boss [trainer Danny Walker] this morning and we are planning on sending me to the races next Wednesday. I am looking at taking it easy and having one or two rides a meeting and go from there.” Moodley is eager to return to raceday competition, with his appetite renewed at the Northern Apprentice Awards on Monday night where he received the Milan Park Premier Apprentice Jockey Award. “I didn’t expect it to be honest, I thought Ace [Lawson-Carroll] got in front of me at the end, but I was very glad to get it,” he said. “When my boss let me know, I was quite chuffed with myself. It was a hard time towards the end of the season, but to get that award, it just means a lot and makes it all worth it.”

FR: Minnie Hauk supplemented to Arc field as 18 remain

Minnie Hauk (Frankel) has been officially supplemented for Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), taking the expected field at Longchamp to 18 runners. Aidan O'Brien all but confirmed Minnie Hauk, the winner of the Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f), Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f), would be added to the Arc field for the €120,000 (approx. AU$213,110) late entry fee when speaking on Tuesday. Christophe Soumillon is set to partner Minnie Hauk and came over to sit on her for the first time last week, with Wayne Lordan to ride O'Brien's other Arc contender Los Angeles (Camelot). The winner of five of her six starts, Minnie Hauk is no bigger than 4-1 for the Arc and is either outright favourite or disputing the position with last year's second Aventure (Sea The Stars). The final field for the Arc will be confirmed on Thursday, followed by the draw.

FR: Asfoora alongside 18 others to stand ground in Prix de l’Abbaye

Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) winner Asfoora (Flying Artie) remains in contention for the Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp on Sunday after featuring among 19 who stood their ground at the first forfeit stage. Trained by Henry Dwyer, the Australian sprinter is set to race in France for the first time on a scintillating undercard to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe that includes five Group 1s. She was a beaten 7-2 favourite when seventh in the Flying Five Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at the Curragh last month and could renew rivalry with She's Quality (Acclamation), Night Raider (Dark Angel) and Mgheera (Zoustar), who all finished ahead of her in Ireland last month. Kevin Ryan won the race with Glass Slippers (Dream Ahead) in 2019 and has chances with Against The Wind (Earthlight), Washington Heights (Washington DC) and Nunthorpe runner-up Ain't Nobody (Sands Of Mali), while William Haggas could run Group 2 winner Sky Majesty (Blue Point).

Fast Network snares National Day Cup for Yip and Badel

By Paul Ryding

Fast Network (Credit: HKJC)

Trainer Dennis Yip claimed a timely first win of the 2025/26 season, taking out the feature National Day Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1000m) at Sha Tin’s National Day fixture on Wednesday when his stable star Fast Network (Wrote) blitzed an impressive field under Alexis Badel, who won the contest for a third time.

Badel won the race last season aboard Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner), who faded to sixth place under champion jockey Zac Purton in a tame defence of his crown. The Frenchman said this time around he had pursued the ride on Fast Network as he rated his chances highly.

“I knew he’d be a very strong contender in this race, so I was chasing the ride, and I’m grateful that the connections and the trainer gave me the confidence of the ride,” Badel said.

“It’s always nice to deliver. I thought he won brilliantly. I probably hit the front too soon because of the draw, but he had plenty to offer. It was great.”

The son of Wrote (High Chaparral) was ridden under a hold until the last 200 metres when he was unleashed by Badel and quickly loomed to the head of the field along the outside.

“He’s a late finisher, this horse,” Yip said, “So in the early stages, I told the jockey not to push him a lot. Just leave him alone, let him relax and then he will finish the last 300 [metres].

A triumphant Yip acknowledged the improvement in his five-year-old charge and switched his focus to further Group success down the line.

“He’s a very honest horse. Since his last race [the Class 2 Tai Mo Shan Handicap, 1400m], his form has improved a lot in Conghua,” Yip said. “I think at the end of the month, there is a Group 2 1200 [metres] for him [Premier Bowl, Handicap]. I think that’s my target for him.”

Jockeys’ championship pacesetter Purton registered a National Day treble to take his tally for the season to 13.

The first leg of his trio of wins came aboard 24-race maiden Ragnarr (Olympic Glory), who finally got off the mark with victory in the Class 5 Nanning Handicap (1200m).

The six-year-old had threatened a breakthrough for trainer David Hall in recent weeks, following two runner-up showings last term and a first-up third at Happy Valley in September. A return to Sha Tin for the first time in seven outings and a reunion with Purton proved just the tonic for the son of Olympic Glory (Choisir). A typically calculated ride from Purton left a fast-closing Ragnarr with one to pass at 150-metre mark. He did so with some in hand.

A plan came together in the Class 5 Jinan Handicap (1800m) for trainers’ championship front-runner David Hayes and his seasoned campaigner Oriental Smoke (Artie Schiller). The class-dropper’s last three wins have come at Class 4, and all seven of his career victories have come under Purton – by design, Hayes revealed.

“I only ever put Zac on when [Oriental Smoke] is ready, and he was running in the shorter races to get into Class 4,” he said.

A good servant to Hayes’ yard, the handler said this might be his last time under the winner’s arch.

“Zac said, actually, he doesn’t feel so good. He’s an old boy, so if he’s pulled up a little bit sore, we might consider retiring [him] because I love these old horses winning in their last run. It’s very nice. We’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Hayes said.

Purton’s treble was sealed with a fine steer on the Class 4 Chengdu Handicap (1400m) favourite Invincible Ibis (Hellbent). Held up at the back of the field, the progressive four-year-old, who was still without a career win, surged to score emphatically, blazing a trail through the centre of the track to salute by two lengths.

“It was never going to be easy from gate 14,” handler Mark Newnham said. “But his best performances have been when he’s got to the outside. It’s the best way to ride this horse.

“He’s always shown enough talent [for me to know] that when he’s got up to the right distance in the right circumstances, he’d put it together, and he put it together really well today.”

On a red-letter day for veteran gallopers, Healthy Happy (Zoustar) – at nine-years-old – rose to claim the Class 2 Beijing Handicap (1400m), his first win in a little over two years, for trainer Frankie Lor.

Two-pound claiming apprentice Jerry Chau successfully lifted the 44-start veteran – who won the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) in 2021 – to a surprise win over market leaders Steps Ahead (Written By) and Hong Lok Golf (Grunt).

Britney Wong claimed the opener, the Class 5 Shenyang Handicap (1400m), following a confident ride aboard Tsuen Wan Glory (Smart Missile) for Manfred Man. Drawn 12, she motored across to head the field before finding the rail. She was never in danger as she took her third win of the season by two-and-a-half lengths going away.

A race-to-race double for Man was completed in the second section of the Class 4 Chongqing Handicap (1200m) when Hugh Bowman got home on the favourite Aurora Patch (Showtime), with the five-year-old claiming his first win of the season.

Chris So and Andrea Atzeni combined to take out the first section of the Class 4 Chongqing Handicap (1200m) following a determined showing from first-time winner Sunny Q (Rich Enuff). From the foot of the weights, the five-year-old weaved through the field a furlong out and overhauled favourite Do Your Part (Coats Choice) on the nod, denying jockey Keagan De Melo a first winner of the season.

Winning doubles were sealed for jockey and trainer when the David Hall-trained Kempes (In The Dark) – a Group 1 winner in Argentina – got up to snatch the Class 3 Shanghai Handicap (1200m) on the line under Atzeni.

After flattering to deceive in the first seven outings of his young Hong Kong career, the 2023 Estrellas Juvenile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner broke his duck after rallying from the tail of the field to seize his local maiden victory by a nose.

Newnham completed a double of his own in the fixture-closing Class 3 Tianjin Handicap (1400m) when his trainee Max Que (Akeed Mofeed) prevailed by a short-head over the Dave Eustace-trained Silvery Breeze (Dundeel).

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Saturday.

Where do you start with the story of Piggyback?

It’s a tale with such a sprinkling of unexpected, strange and purely wild elements that - were this not racing and breeding - it’d be hard to believe.

Piggyback race replay

She’s an Australian-bred stayer (no wait, there’s more) - an Australian-bred stayer who after winning last Saturday’s Colin Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m) goes in to wave the flag and battle a field of mostly European imports in Saturday’s The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick.

And she’s a stayer by Trapeze Artist, that speedy son of speed sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), who won his four Group 1s from 1200 metres to 1400 metres.

The Metropolitan field has 18 starters and 14 of them are from Ireland, France or Britain.

Only three were bred in Australia - and two of those by Trapeze Artist.

Aside from $26 shot Piggyback, there’s Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) winner Flying Bandit, at $19.

Trapeze Artist, now covering his seventh book at Widden Stud for $33,000 (inc GST) - down from $55,000 last year and an initial $88,000 - has sired 118 winners, from 202 runners.

He’s only had four offspring even tried past 2200 metres, for two winners. One is the five-year-old Piggyback, the other is another from the stallion’s first crop in Trapeze Torque, who’s also won at 2400 metres, in a Sunshine Coast Benchmark 58 in July. More on him later.

Further confounding conventional wisdom, Piggyback - trained by Ciaron Maher for Dynamic Syndications - is out of a mare by Choisir (Danehill Dancer), who had enough stamina to win seven races, between 1000 metres and 1200 metres.

And if you want to bend things further, she’s got the oft-dicey double Danehill (Danzig) in her pedigree, in the least desirable of the three possible ways you can execute that business - via two sons. At least it’s more diluted than some Danehill duplications, at 4m x 4m, via Snitzel’s sire Redoute’s Choice and Choisir’s dad Danehill Dancer.

Bred by Trapeze Artist’s breeder and owner Bert Vieira, Piggyback is out of a mare who has a fitting name in all of this: Wowee.

Vieira bought her off the track for $210,000, and ended up selling her before Piggyback started racing, for $30,000.

Breeders are often sanguine about such matters. You can’t keep ‘em all, the glorious uncertainty, and all that. The colourful Vieira is cut from a different cloth.

“Do I regret selling her? Yes I regret selling her,” he tells It’s In The Blood. “I bought her for $210,000. She didn’t show much so I sold her. Next thing you know, Piggyback comes out.”

Wowee’s first five sold foals included one that fetched $6,000 and another knocked down for a princely $3,500. He’s Piggyback’s full-brother, incidentally, and he was retired as a three-year-old after five runs in the NSW bush highlighted by a ninth at Dubbo. To give him his due, he was tenth on the turn.

Those first five sold foals netted a combined $171,500. And then last February, her next one fetched $170,000 - a colt for Wowee’s new West Australian owners, by Maschino (Encosta De Lago), who was among the top 15 lots at Magic Millions Perth.

By that stage, Piggyback was a Sydney city winner, having taken a 2000-metre Randwick Benchmark 72 as her third win in five starts. Still, that’s quite a turnaround for her mum as far as the sales ring goes.

As for Piggyback, her sale adds probably the most bizarre twist to this tale yet.

An early October foal, but something of an ugly duckling, she missed the main auctions, and was offered by Widden for Vieira at the Gold Coast National Yearling Sale.

She was purchased - for what Vieira calls a disappointing $32,000 - by a buyer identifying as Louis Bloodstock. No one was sure who that was, but they would soon become familiar with the name, for Louis Bloodstock bought 21 of the next 87 lots via online bids. All fillies, they cost a combined total just shy of $1 million.

The man behind the splurge was soon revealed as none other than Rob Ferguson, former Magic Millions part owner and Torryburn Stud owner.

And in a story which gained some notoriety, his spree was found to be drug-enhanced.

Well, who among us can’t say we haven’t bought a few things we didn’t need online on a big night - if perhaps not a million bucks worth?

The substance involved was innocent and legal, but it was shopping on steroids - literally.

For those who haven’t heard this ripping yarn, it transpired Ferguson, suffering from a lung condition, was in the midst of being taken off a course of the drugs by his doctor, the side-effects of which can be an experience of ‘invulnerability’. He sure shopped like it.

It was also revealed that each purchase brought him a feeling of great euphoria. He also had his dog at his feet, and that dog was called Louis.

“It was like having been at the Magic Millions bar all day and then deciding to buy some horses. It felt like a great idea at the time,” Ferguson told ANZ News at the time.

“It was just one of those things that happened. I’ll probably end up famous because of it.”

Ferguson awoke the next morning, possibly asked “What have I done?”, and decided to put his 22 fillies up for auction a couple of months later in a Magic Millions online sale, with reserves of half what he’d paid.

“When I purchased these fillies I am sure I made a lot of vendors happy. This time around I will probably be making a lot of buyers happy,” he said, adding “it was never my intention to own these horses”.

Somewhere in Sydney, Dynamic Syndications’ father and son team Dean and Adam Watt, well versed in the capricious ways of this sport, exchanged a glance.

“When Dad and I read about the story, we just turned to each other and said, ‘You just know that one of these 22 is going to turn out to be a really good horse, and it will be a really good story’,” Adam tells It’s In The Blood. “We just had to be the ones to find that horse.”

Fortunately for the Watts, their veterinarian Tim Roberts had been contracted by Magic Millions to vet “The Ferguson 22”. They asked him to pick out a couple, then had another vet and agent Greg Nash confirm those choices, and ultimately they bought the filly who became Piggyback for - as expected - less than Ferguson had paid, at just $27,000.

The second of their pair, incidentally, was Red Hot Lizzie, a $10,500 buy who’s now a dual city winner.

Piggyback took her time. She debuted as a December three-year-old with a Gosford win over 1200 metres - more Trapeze Artist’s style - then spelled before winning her second start, at Orange.

After that Randwick 2000-metre victory at start five, Maher tried her over 2500 metres at Flemington, for a decent fourth of 11, before another spell.

“She just didn’t come up in her next campaign last summer,” Watt said, as Piggyback managed two fifth placings and a sixth between December, 2024 and February this year.

This preparation, however, has been an upward spiral, starting with a 1300-metre Warwick Farm win in May, including a Randwick 2400-metre fourth five starts later before a confidence-boosting 2200-metre Doomben victory in hot time at her following start, and into last Saturday’s Colin Stephen win - which was gained by 0.58 lengths.

Piggyback has been up for a long time and will be spelled after Saturday, but already her connections can start dreaming big.

She’s now passed the first ballot clause for next year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) - winning a Group race over at least 2400 metres in the preceding two years - and so the Watts and co can entertain thoughts of not just having an Australian-bred stayer in the great marathon, but one by Trapeze Artist.

From whence does her staying power come? The answer might be simple: Her second dam Zeal won only one of ten, but was by that great stamina-bearer Zabeel (Sir Tristram).

That blood came through in Wowee, who won three from ten for John Sadler, becoming a stakes winner over distance at her last start in Morphettville’s SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3, 2500m).

Trapeze Artist (Credit: Widden Stud)

What’s more, Trapeze Artist’s 2400-metre Sunshine Coast winner, Trapeze Torque, also has Zabeel, being out of a mare by his grandson Lonhro (Octagonal).

Trapeze Torque also has double-Danehill, at 4m x 3f (his second dam). Gender balanced is statistically the best way to duplicate Danehill, but in Piggyback we find perhaps more for the “exceptions” file, regarding that double-male dodginess.

“Quite a lot of that double-Danehill cross really doesn’t work,” Watt says, “but for whatever reason, Choisir mares with Danehill-line stallions does work well.”

Piggyback has two other duplications in her first five generations, with a 5m x 4f of Lunchtime (Silly Season) and - how Australian is this? - a 5m x 5f of Biscay (Unfuwain), feeding strongly into the female lines of Trapeze Artist and Choisir.

The great blue hen Natalma (Native Dancer) is there in spades, with 11 mentions from columns six to nine, while influential British 1920s mare Selene (Chaucer) makes ten appearances, and Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim) six.

Hyperion (Gainsborough) is the most common stallion, with 18 spots in the first nine generations, one more than Nearco (Pharos).

And so we take our learnings:

- Trapeze Artist can leave a stayer - his Group 1 winner had some stickability in being Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Griff, after all;

- You can have double male Danehill if it’s through Choisir and;

- You shouldn’t buy horses on steroids.

This rollicking tale could also have another brilliant chapter to come, next spring.

“Imagine a daughter of Trapeze Artist out of a Choisir mare rolling around in a big two-mile race on the first Tuesday of November, taking on the international raiders?” Watt says.

“It’d be quite the story.”
