Boom colt Rosberg (Deep Field) will face the biggest test of his short career when he lines up for just his second start in Saturday’s Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Flemington.

The Clinton McDonald-trained three-year-old set tongues wagging with his blistering Cranbourne jump out win in 45.61 seconds before delivering on the hype when he landed the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at The Valley on debut.

What's On

Now the current favourite for the Danehill must extend his flawless record against a strong field that includes Group 2 winner and Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Tentryis (Street Boss), Group 3 victor Jimmy Recard (I Am Invincible), regally bred dual stakes winner My Gladiola (I Am Invincible), unbeaten gelding Legacy Bound (Ole Kirk) and Group 1 placegetter Tycoon Star (Written Tycoon).

However, McDonald is confident Rosberg is ready for the challenge.

“He's come through the run in great order,” McDonald told ANZ News. “He's a horse that's always shown immense ability, and we obviously threw him into the deep end to sink or swim, and he has come through it well.

“He's learned a lot from having his first start in such a high grade race, his mannerism and attitude has been terrific since that run. We feel that he's grown mentally and really learnt a lot from it, so we're expecting for him to be a better version again, come this Saturday.”

Rosberg has had one look at the Flemington straight, finishing fourth of four in a jumpout behind Saturday rivals McGaw (I Am Immortal), Tentryis and Jimmy Recard, where he was partnered by Ben Melham.

“Ben Melham rides him and knows him well and said he absolutely loved [the straight],” McDonald said. “We didn't send him out there to do anything over the top, it was more for him to go there, have a day away, have another experience and a look at the straight.

“He handled it really well. He never turned her hair, he jumped cleanly. He was nice and relaxed through the gallop, and Ben said he went straight as an arrow, so that was the main thing.

“He's had a nice gallop this week on Tuesday, and we feel that he's prepped up really well coming into Saturday. He's going to have to be at the top of his game, there's really nice horses in this race. It's a stronger race than what he contested at The Valley, but we feel that this horse is a special horse and we feel that he'll get the job done.”

From barrier two, McDonald will leave the tactics to Melham.

“We've got a deal, Benny and I. I train them, he rides them. So once I leg Benny up, that's not my problem, and the keys are handed over to him and he's not to stuff it up,” the trainer said.

McDonald compares Rosberg to his late father Ross’s superstar Weekend Hussler (Hussonet), winner of the 2007 Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) among a total of seven Group 1s.

“Why I compare him to Weekend Hussler is everything that he does, he does with ease,” McDonald said. “He can run time and he looks like he's having a canter. Ben said he's one of those horses you sit on and you don't know how fast you're going, but he doesn't look like he's going fast.

“He just has that ability to do everything with so much ease and he's got an incredible set of lungs on him, he recovers very quickly, and he's just got everything you look for in a horse and the most important thing is we haven't found the ceiling on him yet.”

Victory on Saturday would set Rosberg up for a tilt at the Coolmore Stud Stakes, the race McDonald has long identified as his spring grand final, and aim to give the trainer his first Group 1 win since the ill-fated Hayasugi (Royal Meeting) won the Blue Diamond Stakes of 2024.

“[The Coolmore is] what we've got our eyes on. That's our prize that we're tracking towards and everything's been planned towards that race, and if he wins the Danehill, he will be two for two in stakes racing. I think that if he wins on Saturday, the sky's the limit for the horse and he would be very hard to beat in the Coolmore,” McDonald added.

Despite three vacant slots in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), McDonald says connections will not deviate from the plan.

“It's a question I really haven't thought about, but first thoughts would be no,” he said on a potential crack at The Everest.

“The reason being is he's only [at his] second race start, very inexperienced, taking on seasoned sprinters with probably the world's best sprinter [Ka Ying Rising] coming from Hong Kong. I think he could probably run in an Everest next year with a bit more seasoning.

“If you win an Everest, it's not going to add more value to him than if you win a Coolmore, only the prize-money difference. We will focus on the Coolmore. That's always been our goal, and every time you change your goal, that's when you come unstuck.

“He's had four weeks between his first and second run, and will have four weeks again to his third. We haven't overtaxed him and feel there's plenty of improvement to come into the Coolmore. I would say not [for The Everest], but nothing's off the table. It's the owners’ choice at the end of the day.”

Bred by SF Bloodstock and Blake Sandblom Pty Ltd, Rosberg was purchased by Shane McGrath Bloodstock for $260,000 from Newgate Farm’s draft at the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

The colt, who is the third foal and only stakes winner out of multiple US stakes-winning mare Sheer Pleasure (Birdonthewire), was then secured by McDonald for $750,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale after preparing him for McGrath’s draft.

“Shane McGrath picks all these ready to run horses, so I'm lucky enough to do business for Shane. Shane asked me to prepare his draft last year, which I did, and this horse came into our system. He's a horse from day one, once we saw him and we let him slide up a furlong, I got some owners and had to buy him, and obviously there was a lot of Hong Kong interest in the horse,” McDonald said.

“We had to be strong on him, which we were, and we got him for $750,000, but in saying that, Shane had other horses there, a horse called Bob's Line that was passed in by Shalaa. He was passed in for $150,000. He's been sold to Hong Kong, and he's won two trials up there.

“At the end of the day, I trust what Shane buys. I think he's a very, very good judge of a horse, and any horses that we've done this year are all nice horses. There's a lot of nice horses there.”

McGrath will present a 14-strong draft at this year’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Riverside on October 16.

“We've had some run up really well, and they've all got good actions. The Tornado out of Gig was very good. I like the Grunt there, the Dirty Work is a nice horse. So we're trying to do a brand where it's not about running the fastest time, it's about producing race horses and turning them into race horses. So a trainer can get them and say, ‘geez this is well educated’, and then they can go on and train the horse and know Shane McGrath has bought it, who's one of the best judges going around,” McDonald said.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Waller banking on Soul Of Spain in Metropolitan

Chris Waller (Credit: Racing Photos)

Chris Waller admits he has been taken aback by the progress of Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) favourite Soul Of Spain (Phoenix Of Spain), declaring the import has returned from his spell “a different horse.” Soul Of Spain broke through in Australia last campaign when stretched to 2200 metres at his final run. This preparation, he has surprised connections with wins over unsuitable shorter trips in Queensland before a strong success in the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) last time out. Waller expects the gelding to be better again over 2400 metres in Saturday’s Metropolitan at Randwick, where he carries just 50.5 kilograms. “He came across from Ireland with some pretty good form,” Waller said. “First prep we never really got him up to a distance until he won his last start before a spell and he has just come back a different horse. He gets in very well with only a half-kilo penalty [for winning at Newcastle].” Initially equal favourite with stablemate Birdman (Free Eagle), Soul Of Spain ($4.80) firmed in the betting after drawing barrier 11, while Birdman ($6) faces a tougher task from gate 17. While Birdman has proven stamina overseas and claimed the Kingston Town Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last start, his Australian record at longer trips is still to be confirmed. “Birdman has got the Sydney form. He’s got good, sharp form whereas Soul Of Spain, all we’re going off is Newcastle,” Waller said. “Soul Of Spain will definitely run the distance. Birdman should run the distance. I guess that’s the only difference, that Soul Of Spain has ticked that box.” Waller will also saddle More Felons (Churchill), Travolta (Lope De Vega) and Etna Rosso (Decorated Knight) as he chases a seventh Metropolitan, having won last year with Land Legend (Galileo).

Queensland hopes ride on Yellow Brick in Epsom Handicap

Tony and Maddysen Sears will be flying the flag for Queensland on Saturday when stable star Yellow Brick (The Mission) lines up in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. The gelding is the only Queensland-trained runner in the famous mile and co-trainer Maddy Sears, who also rides him in trackwork, is confident he can reproduce his Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) heroics. The six-year-old stormed home to finish second to War Machine (Harry Angel) in the Stradbroke, and while his midfield effort in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) may look plain, Sears believes circumstances were against him. “He raced way too close in his last start,” she said. “We weren’t disappointed. It was probably the best he’s ever finished being up on speed. He can’t finish off like that, especially with that weight. We’re hoping he gets the same run he did in the Stradbroke. He was very good in the Stradbroke so hopefully that happens again on Saturday.” Yellow Brick drops to 55.5 kilograms for the Epsom and from barrier 11 is expected to settle back before unleashing his customary late sprint. “He is ready to go. He had a really good hitout [on Tuesday] morning in company. I’m really happy with him and he has come through the run really well,” Sears said.

Tupakara ready to take Flight over a mile

A Group 2 placing isn’t usually cause for disappointment, but co-trainer Annabel Archibald admits Tupakara’s (Trapeze Artist) Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) third left connections wanting more. Sent out a clear favourite after a flashing second to Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) first-up in the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), the daughter of Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) settled closer to the speed in the Tea Rose but battled into third, beaten 2.1 lengths by the same filly. “My initial thought was that she may not have appreciated being ridden handier, but the winner was three-wide outside us covering ground and they went a second slower than standard to the corner,” Archibald, who trains in partnership with her husband Rob, said. “It’s all well and good saying, ‘ride her quieter’ but when it’s a slow tempo, it’s probably more so just a flat second-up run. But we won’t be bustling her out of the gates. We will just ride her where she’s happy.” Tupakara has the outside draw in barrier 11 for Saturday’s Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, where she will again clash with Apocalyptic. While her rival stretches to a mile for the first time, Tupakara boasts experience at the trip, having finished third in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) as a two-year-old. “They’ve all got a bit of improving to do to catch the favourite but she worked really well [on Tuesday] morning and she’s third-up,” Archibald said. “She went very close in the Champagne as a two-year-old so we know the mile here suits and she is rock-hard fit. The favourite looks very smart but they’re three-year-old fillies. They are all fairly lightly raced and anything can happen.”

Deakin on track for cup tasks

Phillip Stokes is unfazed by what some may view as a modest start to Deakin’s (Australia) campaign, with the Pakenham-based trainer confident the stayer is right on track for his ultimate spring targets – the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Deakin continues his preparation in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington, his third outing this prep after runs over 1400 metres and 1700 metres. The gelding also sharpened up with a 1200-metre jump-out at Pakenham, which Stokes believes was key to tightening his fitness. “I felt he was doing too well so I had to screw him down a bit more,” Stokes said. “He trialled up nice and he’s thriving, but this is where we get serious now, these next two runs.” Victory in The Roy Higgins Quality (Listed, 2600m) in March secured Deakin a ballot exemption for the Melbourne Cup, allowing Stokes to map a deliberate path through the spring. The trainer is optimistic the gelding is trending the right way heading into the Cup. “On his data from his first-up run to his second-up run he improved six lengths and to be competitive in the Caulfield Cup he needs to find another five lengths, which I think we can do,” Stokes said. “He’ll run well in the Caulfield Cup and then we’ll see if he can stay the two miles in the Melbourne Cup, but I couldn’t be happier. He’s dropping the bit now, he’s relaxing probably better than last prep in his gallops so I’m quietly confident he’ll be ok and stay the trip.”

Kiwis vie for Melbourne Cup berth

Trav (Credit: Racing Photos)

Five Kiwi-breds are among the 17 runners for Saturday’s The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington, which offers a “win and you’re in” ticket to the Melbourne Cup. Leading the charge is Trav (Almanzor), winner of the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), who makes his Australian debut for trainer Raymond Connors. “We’ve come a long way and it’s great to be here, but we’ll see how we go on Saturday,” Connors said. “It’s always been a dream to get a horse into the Melbourne Cup…this horse might not be up to it, but we might not get another chance. He seems to stay the distance. He’s run the two miles twice and run it well.” Connors says Trav will improve third-up and could head to the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) if he misses Saturday’s exemption. Also lining up is Mark Twain (Shocking), who famously secured a golden ticket into last year’s Cup via the Roy Higgins Quality before injury derailed his campaign. Now back with trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood, he is again being aimed at the first Tuesday in November. “It was a bit gutting having got the golden ticket last year and not being able to run,” Wellwood said. “He’s very sound and healthy now. The Melbourne Cup is always the dream and that’s the path he’s on.”

Begg brings trio of stakes contenders to Flemington

Grahame Begg will saddle three key runners across Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes Day card at Flemington, with the Caulfield trainer confident each can be competitive in their respective Group 2 assignments. Ruska Roma (Super Seth) lines up in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Begg believes the filly will be better suited by the Flemington straight after a testing run at Caulfield last start in the Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m). “We thought it was quite an even effort [last start],” he told Racing.com. “It was a very strongly run race, The Playwright dragged them out of their comfort zone and she got exposed for her inexperience and race craft. They put the foot down and she didn’t get a chance to go through her gears. Then at about the 250-metre mark, the winner [Yum] came out underneath her neck, he had to check up, but she worked to the line really well so it was very pleasing. Back to Flemington, a big straight, she should be able to get in a nice rolling gallop and go through her gears.” In the Rose Of Kingston Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Miraval Rose (Grunt) steps out at what her trainer considers the ideal trip. “She’s getting up to probably her best distance,” he said. “She’s in outstanding order. If she can get a cheap enough lead up in front, she’ll be hard to run down.” Begg also saddles Royal Insignia (Written Tycoon) in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), with the colt expected to improve off his first run up the straight when fourth in the Bobbie Lewis Quality (Gr 2, 1200m). “Being drawn inside last start wasn’t ideal for his first time up the straight,” Begg said. “He’s taken good improvement…we feel that he’s topped off nicely for this and drawn a bit more of a favourable gate in the middle.”

Olive hoping Spicy Lu can bounce back

Queanbeyan trainer Nick Olive is back chasing Melbourne spring features and is hopeful promising filly Spicy Lu (Tagaloa) can bounce back in Saturday’s Edward Manifold Stakes. Winner of the Fernhill Mile (Listed, 1600m) as a juvenile, Spicy Lu was a luckless fourth in the Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield last start, and her trainer said she has thrived since. “Where she is at home, she’s in a nice, big yard outside and she loves it,” Olive told Racing.com. “I feel she’s thrived since that second-up run and she’s in really good order. Her work on Tuesday morning was super.” The Edward Manifold is set to shape her campaign, with the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) both under consideration. “I think Saturday will tell us a lot,” Olive said. “If she goes really well she could go to the Thousand Guineas…The Oaks is in the back of our minds, for sure, but she needs to make all the right steps leading into that.” Olive was pleased with Spicy Lu’s effort in the Jim Moloney despite a tough run. “She got back further than I’d have liked, got buffeted, and the jockey probably thought she was done, then she grabbed the bit again and hit the line hard,” he said. Olive expects both the rise to a mile and the long Flemington straight to be positives. “It was great to get down to Melbourne again…it definitely brings back memories of [Vinery Stud Stakes winner] Single Gaze,” he said. “They’ve both got that will to try.” Spicy Lu was a $6.50 chance on Friday, with Just A Journey (Justify) the $3.80 favourite.

Captivant colt lands Warwick Farm trial

Kia Ora Stud's first-season sire Captivant (Capitalist) sired an impressive winner at the Warwick Farm trials on Friday, with the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained Courthezon taking out an 815-metre heat. Ridden by Zac Lloyd, the colt responded well to a bit of urging at the 300-metre mark and produced an impressive turn of foot to score by 1.7 lengths over Plagiarism (Written By). “We've loved this colt from day one. He's always made everything look very easy. He's got a wonderful temperament and everything he's done, he's taken in his stride," Annabel Archibald said. "He's very straightforward, very athletic and did everything really professionally today. He'll now be set for his debut, and I think wherever we place him, he'll be hard to beat. He's been the standout of our two-year-old crop right from the start." Jockey Zac Lloyd added: “He was very nice and very impressive today. He really knows his job now. He began well, I gave him a little squeeze to teach him that he needs to jump out and run, and I liked the way he came back underneath me. He was ready to go and he put them away nicely. He’s a lovely horse.” Courthezon was purchased for $150,000 by Kia Ora Stud from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year and is out of the Group placegetter Rayas (Rip Van Winkle), who has already produced juvenile stakes performer Ortega (Reliable Man).

NSW Country Racing Awards Celebrate 2025 Winners

Racing NSW Country staged its annual Racing Conference on Friday, an event highlighted by the presentation of the 2025 NSW Country Racing Awards. The awards acknowledged the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals and clubs throughout the 2024/25 season. Among the major winners, Rod Watt was honoured with the Simon Nivison Special Achievement Award, while Dubbo Turf Club was named Country TAB Race Club of the Year in Category A. The Sapphire Coast Turf Club secured the title in Category B and C, with Bong Bong Picnic Race Club recognised for Outstanding Achievement in Community and Picnic Racing. Matthew Dunn claimed Country Trainer of the Year, with Aaron Bullock crowned Country Jockey of the Year. Rising talent Siena Grima received the Country Apprentice Jockey of the Year award, and Leandro Ribeiro was acknowledged as Country Approved Rider of the Year. Racing NSW Country said all finalists and nominees should be proud of their efforts over the past season, noting that the awards reflect the strength and passion of country racing across the state.

Horsepower appoints Tony Scott

Horsepower has announced the appointment of Tony Scott as its new Northern NSW territory manager, following the departure of national sales manager Greg Murphy. Scott brings extensive national and international experience to the role, having previously held senior managerial positions at leading Australian stud farms Vinery, Emirates Park, and Aquis. “At Horsepower, we employ horse people, not sales people,” marketing manager Stephen Lamb said. “Tony is well-known and highly respected throughout the Hunter Valley, and his induction into the business has been seamless. Importantly, Tony has first-hand experience with Horsepower products, having used them in his previous roles with great success through horses such as Manaal, Marhoona and Charm Stone. His knowledge and expertise will be a major asset to our business moving forward.”

NZTR confirm $1 million Bonus Pool for The NZB Kiwi

Damask Rose (Credit: Race Images)

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has confirmed the ten New Zealand stakes races that will feed into the $1 million Bonus Eligible Race Pool attached to The NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m), the southern hemisphere’s richest three-year-old race.

On top of the $4 million base stake for the March 7 feature at Ellerslie, an additional $1 million will be distributed in bonuses for horses that win one of the designated lead-ups and finish in the top three in The Kiwi. The breakdown allocates $600,000 for first, $250,000 for second and $150,000 for third.

The bonus system was struck for the first time this year by Damask Rose (Savabeel), who won the 2025 NZB Kiwi after claiming the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m), taking her total prize-money haul to $1.8 million.

The lead-up races for the 2025-26 season include the James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa on October 27, the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton on November 8 and 15, the Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Ellerslie on December 26, and the Levin Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) at Trentham on January 3.

Later in the summer, the Karaka Millions 3YO and the Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) will both be run at Ellerslie on January 24, followed by the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at Te Rapa on February 7, the Uncle Remus Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ellerslie on February 21, and finally the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham on March 29.

“These ten races are milestones on the road to The NZB Kiwi,” NZTR chief executive officer Matt Ballesty said. “The Bonus Pool adds another layer of excitement and gives participants even more reason to chase this world-class race.”

Joshua Brown to bounce back in Matamata Cup

Trainer-part owner Lance Gussey is hoping Joshua Brown (Dalghar) can put his Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) flop behind him when he contests the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) on Saturday. The gelding rose sharply through the grades during winter, capped by his Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) win at New Plymouth, but failed to beat a runner home in the Foxbridge Plate. “That was a pretty average performance and a long way below what he’s capable of,” Gussey said. “He’s a real hot and cold horse …sometimes he’ll just switch off and decide not to try. We know he’s a lot better than that.” Runner-up in the Te Awamutu Cup (1600m) runner-up earlier this season, Joshua Brown has had a freshen since Te Rapa and pleased his trainer in recent weeks. “We gave him a couple of weeks off and he’s been training extremely well since. He’s had another horse to work with, which seems to be helping him focus,” Gussey said. “I’m looking forward to getting him back to the races.” The six-year-old has a strong record in heavy going with three wins and two placings from six attempts, conditions that could give him an edge on Matamata’s Heavy 10 surface. Regular rider Lynsey Satherley again takes the mount, having partnered him in 13 of 14 starts for four wins. Joshua Brown is on the second line of betting at $6.

In-form stable eyes further success at Matamata

Trainer Darrell Hollinshead will look to extend his stable’s strong run of form when he saddles Rosetown Princess (Redwood) and Ramblin’ Rose (Complacent) at Matamata on Saturday. Rosetown Princess, who contests the Russell & Yvonne Green Memorial (2000m), has been racing consistently this preparation having been an open handicap winner at New Plymouth three starts back before finishing fifth at Te Aroha and runner-up in Taranaki. Hollinshead believes she could easily have gone closer in both runs. “She could possibly have won them all,” he said. “She was in the worst part of the track on the fence two runs back. Next time, Elen [Nicholas] said she rode her a bit too pretty and got held up a whisker and lost momentum.” Originally campaigned in Victoria with Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Rosetown Princess placed seven times before returning to New Zealand, where she has since won four races. Hollinshead says she is effective over ground if able to secure cover. Stablemate Ramblin’ Rose lines up in the Mitre 10 Matamata Handicap (2000m) after a luckless resuming third over 1600 metres at Te Rapa. “She clipped heels at the start last time and that’s why she was three lengths last, but she ran on nicely,” Hollinshead said. Meanwhile, Hollinshead is weighing up stakes targets for last weekend’s Te Rapa winner Bak Da Angel (Ace High), who could head to the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) or the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Pukekohe. “I think she’s the most improved horse we’ve had for years,” he said.

Dixon on weather watch with Marotiri Molly

Marotiri Molly (Credit: Race Images)

Foxton trainer Matt Dixon believes Marotiri Molly (Per Incanto) is perfectly placed for Saturday’s Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Hawera, if the weather holds. The seven-year-old boasts the highest rating in the field (100) and a strong résumé, highlighted by victory in last season’s Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and a placing in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). She has six wins from 16 starts and over $245,000 in prize-money. Resuming at Trentham on September 20, Marotiri Molly finished a close third in a 1200-metre open handicap, an effort that has her trainer upbeat about her second-up prospects. “Apart from the weather, I couldn’t be any happier,” Dixon said. “I was thrilled with that first-up run, and stepping up to 1400 metres is definitely her go. She has a great record at that distance. If it was a Soft 5 or Soft 6, I’d be going into this race with a fair bit of confidence. If it stays Heavy 8 like it is now, she’ll probably run but I’m a bit less confident. They’re supposed to get 10-12 millimetres of rain overnight, which would take it down to a Heavy 9 or Heavy 10, and there’d be a high chance that she won’t run.” It’s familiar territory for Marotiri Molly, who scored at this meeting 12 months ago over the same course and trip. Dixon is weighing up a similar campaign this spring, with the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe in November a likely goal. “She ran a really good race for third in that last year and it might be a suitable target again,” he said.

Lochmara Bay seeking breakthrough win

David Walsh is hoping consistent mare Lochmara Bay (Sweynesse) can convert her string of placings into a maiden victory when she lines up in the Ecoglo International NZ 1200 (1200m) at Phar Lap on Sunday. The four-year-old has finished runner-up in three of her four starts this preparation, all over 1400 metres, and her trainer is banking on a drop back in trip to provide the winning edge. “She has been racing really well and has led at the 200 metres several times and got run down, so I thought I might as well drop her back to 1200 metres to see how she goes,” Walsh said. A wide draw in barrier ten and forecast rain are the main concerns, but Walsh is hopeful jockey Tina Comignaghi can overcome them. Later in the day, Walsh saddles up Graeme John (Per Incanto) in the Snapback @ Clearview Park 1200 (1200m) as he looks to go back-to-back following a strong win five weeks ago. “You never quite know if they are going to take the step up to Rating 75 grade,” Walsh said. “He looks amazing and has done very well, but whatever he does he will improve on.” Stablemate Toa Haka (Iffraaj) also contests the race, with apprentice Floor Moerman’s three-kilogram claim helping offset another wide draw. “He’s had no luck with barriers but he’s going well. A bit of a loose track might suit him,” Walsh said of Toa Haka.

Hashizume seeking to snare Melbourne Cup start

Kiwi jockey Masa Hashizume will make his Australian riding debut at Flemington this Saturday when he partners Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) winner Trav (Almanzor) in The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m). The 29-year-old has developed a strong association with the Raymond Connors-trained stayer, guiding him to Group 2 glory over two miles at Ellerslie in March. The pair have finished fourth in both starts this preparation, including an eye-catching run out wide at Ellerslie a fortnight ago. Hashizume said he was thrilled when Connors invited him to continue the partnership across the Tasman. “I knew he was going to try to go to the Melbourne Cup, but I didn’t expect him to ask me to come to Melbourne with him,” Hashizume said. “It was a huge run at Ellerslie last start and when I hopped off the horse, he asked me if I wanted to ride Trav in Melbourne, and I said yes.” Saturday will mark both his first look at Flemington and his first ride in Australia. “It’s a good raceday with lots of Group races and a lot of good jockeys there, so I am excited to ride against them,” he said. Hashizume had hoped fellow New Zealand-based jockey Matt Cartwright would help him settle in, but Cartwright was sidelined after a fall at Tauranga on Wednesday. Now, Hashizume says he may lean on top hoop Damian Lane for guidance, recalling the Australian star once walked the track with him on Karaka Millions night. Trav has drawn barrier six for The Bart Cummings.

Vincent Ho will attempt to kickstart his season at Sha Tin on Saturday with seven rides and a bit of help from some old friends among several leading chances. Ho, who missed the bulk of last season when sidelined following a fall, has been feeling his way back into form after months of intense rehabilitation. Discussing his rides at Saturday’s fixture, Ho highlighted The Boom Box (Spirit Of Boom), a three-time winner over course and distance, as a strong chance in the Class 3 Tung Lung Chau Handicap (1200m). Ho, who has one win so far this season, struck up a promising partnership with the Chris So-trained gelding from the jump. The pair partnered to win each of The Boom Box’s first three starts, and they have been reunited in a series of barrier trials this season. “I like to ride him. He’s such a nice horse to ride,” Ho said. “I did a few trials on him – so far, felt good. In the morning, probably, he doesn’t show too much – he’s pretty laid back at the trials. Races will switch him on. He’s very relaxed nowadays in the morning. Hopefully, in the race he will be quite similar and also hit the line pretty strongly.” Ho will also take two rides for old ally Caspar Fownes, who has made a fast start to the 2025/26 season, and the four-time Tony Cruz Award winner reconnects with Capital Delight (Capitalist) in the feature, the Class 2 High West Handicap (1650m, dirt). “I really like this horse,” Ho said. “Of course, thanks to Mr Fownes – I hope to win for them.”

International

12 for Ribchester

Haunui Farm stallion Ribchester (Iffraaj) supplied his 12th individual stakes winner on Friday when Ashariba (4 f ex Ashaaqah by Dansili) landed the Prix Dahlia (Listed, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer David Menuisier, the four-year-old filly kept on strongly inside the closing stages to deny Rainbows Edge (Night Of Thunder) by one and three-quarter lengths. There was the same distance further back to Bas Bleu (Masar) in third place. Purchased by her trainer for €26,000 out of the La Motteraye Consignment at the 2022 Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale, Ashariba is a half-sister to five winners including Group 3 scorer Admiral De Vega (Lope De Vega) and the Listed winner Zeeyara (Nathaniel) being out of the Dansili (Danehill) mare Ashaaqah.

16 for Galiway

Haras de Colleville resident Galiway (Galileo) sired his 16th individual stakes winner on Friday when Waybreaker (2 c ex Ickymasho by Multiplex) scored in the Prix de Conde (Gr 3, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Aurelien Lemaitre for trainer Christopher Head, the juvenile colt proved a half-length too strong for Czajkowski (Flintshire) with a further length and a quarter back to Proof (Dubawi) in third. Bred by Oti Management Pty Ltd, Waybreaker was purchased by Chauvigny Global Equine for €210,000 at the 2024 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale and races in the silks of Hisaaki Saito. A half-brother to winner Isneauville (La Havre), he is out of the Grade 3-winning mare Ickymasho (Multiplex). Galiway stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €30,000 (approx. AU$53,350).

105 for Kingman

Juddmonte stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) sired his 104th and 105th individual stakes winners on Friday’s card at Saint-Cloud, beginning with Temptable (3 f ex Capla Temptress by Lope De Vega) who landed the Prix Matchem (Listed, 1400m). Ridden by Clement Lecoeuvre for trainer Francis Graffard, the three-year-old filly took full command of the contest inside the final furlong and defeated Summer Sail (New Bay) by two and a half lengths. There was a further head back to Kaadi (Soldier’s Call) in third place. Bred and raced by Juddmonte, Temptable is a sister to winner Cabrit and a half-sister to fellow winner Item (Frankel), being the second foal out of the Grade 1-winning mare Capla Temptress (Lope De Vega). Kingman’s 105th individual stakes winner arrived three races later when the Mario Baratti-trained Breckenbrough (3 f ex Life Of Pi by Sea The Stars) scored in the Prix Coronation (Listed, 1600m). Providing Cristian Demuro with a stakes double on the card, the three-year-old filly beat Anakova (Dubawi) by three-quarters of a length with a further head back to the third-placed Chica De Ciudad (City Light). Bred by Coverdale Stud, Breckenbough was purchased by Alex Elliott and JS Bloodstock for 130,000gns at the 2024 Tattersalls Guineas Horses-In-Training Sale and races for Michael Blencowe. A half-sister to Listed winner Bahrain Pride (Kodiac), she is out of the unraced Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Life Of Pi, herself a half-sister to Listed scorer Temps Au Temps (Invincible Spirit). Kingman stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$254,710).

19 for Make Believe

Fantasy World (3 g ex Donau by High Chaparral) became the 19th individual stakes winner for Ballylinch Stud stallion Make Believe (Makfi) when running out a determined winner of Friday’s Noel Murless Stakes (Listed, 1m 6f) at Ascot. Ridden by Rob Hornby for trainer Andrew Balding, the three-year-old gelding battled well inside the final furlong to fend off the persistent challenge of the front-running Nightwalker (Frankel) by a neck. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Arabian Force (Lope De Vega) in third in what was a bunched finish. Bred by the Donau Partnership, Fantasy World was first purchased for 13,000gns by Weir View at the 2022 Tattersalls December Foal Sale before being re-sold by Weir View to Lillington Bloodstock for €70,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale the following year. Racing in the colours of the Kennet Valley Syndicate, he is a half-brother to winners Billiegee (Waldgeist) and Moonlit Night (Sea The Stars) being out of the winning High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Donau. Make Believe stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €8,000 (approx. AU$14,230).

UK: Group 1 winner Tamfana to be offered at the Tatts December Mares Sale

Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winner Tamfana (Soldier Hollow) will be offered in the Sceptre Sessions at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, which takes place from December 1-4. Owned by Quantum Leap Racing and trained by David Menuisier, Tamfana won the Prix Miesque (Gr 3, 1400m) as a two-year-old and was a close-up third in the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) at three before capturing the Atalanta Stakes (Gr 3, 1m). Her career highlight came in last year's Sun Chariot Stakes, when she defeated champion Inspiral (Frankel) by two lengths. She is set to line up in the Prix de l'Opera (Gr 1, 2000m) at Longchamp on Sunday. A daughter of Soldier Hollow (In The Wings) and Zoffany (Dansili) mare Tres Magnifique, Tamfana is also a half-sister to The Palace Girl (Areion), who sold for 1.55 million guineas at last year's December Mares Sale. Tres Magnifique is now in foal to Frankel (Galileo).

Two for War Of Will

Claiborne Farm stallion War Of Will (War Front) sired his second individual stakes winner on Thursday when Final Accord (2 f ex Closing Statement by Blame) took out the Matron Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Belmont At The Big A. Ridden by Junior Alvarado for trainer Mark Casse, the juvenile filly defeated Royal Testament (Midshipman) by a length with a further nose back to the third-placed Should’Ve (Not This Time). Bred by Robert Hoeweler, Final Accord was purchased by his owners Gary Barber and Peter Deutsch for US$75,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Out of the winning Blame (Arch) mare Closing Statement, Final Accord is a half-sister to winners Secret Statement (Runhappy) and Blame The Banker (Goldencents). War Of Will stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$20,000 (approx. AU$30,290).
