ALLEZ ALLEZ ALLEZ ASFOORA!!

In an incredible feat of training from Henry Dwyer, the remarkable Asfoora (7 m Flying Artie - Golden Child by I Am Invincible) made further history on Sunday as she became the first Australian-trained horse to win in France when readily landing the Prix de l’Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp.

‘He’s the best Group 1 stallion on the planet’ – Apocalyptic adds to Extreme Choice’s remarkable Group 1 record

Newgate Farm boss Henry Field spent Sunday revelling in the glow of one of the stud’s most special days on the racetrack, after twin triumphs suggesting their “freak of nature” stallion is on his way to confirmation as a sire of sires.

Sub-fertile sensation Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) brought up his sixth elite winner when Apocalyptic - the latest exciting female in a landscape full of them - took out the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

With only 137 starters worldwide, Extreme Choice has a Group 1 winners to runners ratio of 4.4 per cent - something many stallion owners would be satisfied with as a stakes winners to runners figure.

But of extra significance to Newgate was that four races earlier on the Randwick card, Extreme Choice’s son Stay Inside became a stakes-winning stallion with his first runner.

Incognito, who also happens to be Apocalyptic’s stablemate in the Michael Freedman yard, and who was Stay Inside’s highest priced first crop yearling when bought for $1 million by James Harron and Tony Fung’s colts syndicates, launched his sire perfectly by landing Australia’s first two-year-old race of the season, the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m).

It was a dream weekend for Newgate, who can hold high hopes of having a dynastic line of stallions, after the successes of their top two priced sires.

What's On

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Extreme Choice is now covering his ninth book at a national-high fee of $330,000 (inc GST), up from his $275,000 figure of the past three years, through which his fertility rate averaged 45 per cent.

And Stay Inside - who became his father’s first top-tier winner by taking the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 2021 - is full for his fourth book at a fee increased from $55,000 to $66,000 (inc GST), putting him second among Newgate’s 16 stallions.

Many a stud farm has prospered by nurturing not just stallions but stallion lines. Arrowfield has had three generations of champion sires in Danehill (Danzig), Redoute’s Choice and Snitzel. The Autumn Sun - who raised his fourth elite winner on Saturday with unbeaten mare Autumn Glow’s Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) success - is another son of Redoute’s Choice at the stud, while Dundeel (High Chaparral) and Castevecchio are another Group 1-winning father-son sires double act at Arrowfield.

Yarraman Park is striving for similar success with their top-level winning father-son sires I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Hellbent, while Widden Stud has reigning champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and his son Zousain, who’s had three black type victors so far.

Now Newgate are hoping not only that they have their own powerhouse version in Extreme Choice and Stay Inside, but also that the former can prove himself a sire of stallions far and wide.

Newgate also stands another Extreme Choice son in the Group 2 and Group 3-winning Tiger Of Malay, their $11,000 (inc GST) stallion whose first crop, like Stay Inside’s, are also now two-year-olds.

Likewise Group 3 and Listed winner Extreme Warrior, standing at Victoria’s Rosemont Stud for $13,200 (inc GST), has begun his first season with runners.

Up north, Blue Diamond runner-up Don Corleone is covering his second book at Queensland’s Eureka Stud, in a joint-venture with Newgate, for $13,200 (inc GST), while Extreme Choice’s standing sire sons, listed in the Australian Stud Book, are rounded out by Gold Coast winner Extremaarty, who’s at Rockhampton’s Toward Stud for $5,500 (inc GST).

“Our results on Saturday were fantastic, and Extreme Choice just keeps going from strength to strength,” Field told ANZ News.

“But even more special that he’s now looking like he’s a sire of sires. I remember [Coolmore chief] John Magnier telling me when I was younger, that getting a champion sire is one thing, but getting a sire of sires is a whole different thing altogether. It shows the power and longevity of the line.

“And the signs are good with Extreme Choice’s first son with a runner siring a Breeders Plate winner with his first runner. It was one of the most special days I’ve had on a racetrack.

Extreme Choice (Credit: Newgate)

“Extreme Warrior and Tiger of Malay have got two-year-olds and we’re getting really good vibes about those two. They’re stallions at a much lower price bracket, but certainly their stock look like they have ability. And the reports on Don Corleone’s foals so far have been really strong.

“Any time you get a son of Extreme Choice who’s won a Golden Slipper, you’d have high hopes he’ll make it as a stallion himself.

“And certainly the feeling about Stay Inside is a positive one. The proof of the pudding will come on the racetrack, but his stock look like they’ve got a fair bit of talent.

“It’s early days but you couldn’t ask for a better start.”

Seven-year-old Stay Inside may have inherited many things from his father but, mercifully, low fertility isn’t among them, having hit in excess of 70 per cent in his three completed seasons.

Harron and Fung made a bold play by spending seven figures on the progeny of a first-season sire when they purchased Incognito at Magic Millions Gold Coast. He was Stay Inside’s most expensive first crop yearling by far, with the second top being $675,000.

Posting another result for the burgeoning broodmare sire career of I Am Invincible, Incognito is the second foal of the triple champion stallion’s daughter Bleu Zebra, a half-sister to Melbourne Listed winner Fox Swift (Foxwedge).

Third dam Pay My Bail (Justice Prevails) was New Zealand’s Champion 3YO Sprinter of 2003-04, a five-time stakes winner, and threw two black type victors in White Moss (Mossman) and White Sage (Reset).

“He was well purchased by James Harron and his crew, which was great,” Field said. “We were actually the underbidder on him, but I’ve never been so happy to be underbidder on a Breeders’ Plate winner than I was on Saturday, seeing the first son of Stay Inside look like he’s a very good horse.

“Full credit to James and his team. It was a big price for a yearling by a first season sire and they’re got the perfect start.”

Field said Incognito had progressed commensurate with his price tag under Freedman, who also trained Stay Inside when in partnership with brother Richard.

But even more special that he’s now looking like he’s a sire of sires. I remember [Coolmore chief] John Magnier telling me when I was younger, that getting a champion sire is one thing, but getting a sire of sires is a whole different thing altogether. It shows the power and longevity of the line

Bearing Harron’s familiar green with gold epaulettes, Incognito loomed up to win his heat at Sydney’s first official two-year-old trials before fading slightly into third.

But the colt showed the benefit of that outing with his determined finish to take the Breeders’ Plate, by 0.3 lengths from the favourite by another keenly awaited first season sire in I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs).

“From what I understand, at the trials he ran out of condition, but he certainly ran to the stable’s opinion yesterday and the feeling is he’s got further improvement to come,” Field said.

“I knew Michael Freedman had a huge opinion of the horse, so it didn’t surprise me when he put them away like he did.

“His improvement from the trial to the Breeders’ Plate was enormous and if he can take that next step again he’ll be a genuine Golden Slipper contender, you would hope.”

Extreme Choice, meanwhile, continues to achieve the extraordinary, from his limited opportunities.

Apocalyptic, who’s won her past three of four starts, is among his 16 stakes winners worldwide, at 11.6 per cent. She’s also one of his two stakes victors since September 20, after Chris Waller’s colt Estremo took the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m).

With a winners-to-runners ratio of 68.1 per cent, Extreme Choice sits tenth on this season’s nascent Australian general sires’ table, after a personal-best finish of 21st in 2024-25 - when his 87 runners ranked as the lowest number in the top 25.

Between his 1200-metre Group 1-winning two-year-olds Stay Inside and Devil Night, and his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Knight’s Choice, Extreme Choice now has two 1600-metre elite winners, with Apocalyptic having joined She’s Extreme. That mare counts as the sire’s top performer having won the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at two, and the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

Apocalyptic’s Flight victory means Extreme Choice’s Group 1 winners are evenly balanced - three male and three female - which largely echoes the 12-year-old’s overall stakes winners gender split of nine and seven.

“He’s the best Group 1 stallion on the planet, based on Group 1 winners to runners,” Field said.

“He’s nothing short of a freak of nature. He’s had a Golden Slipper winner, to a Melbourne Cup winner in Knight’s Choice, and everything in between.

“And now Apocalyptic is so exciting. I know Michael Freedman thinks she could be one of the best horses he’s put a bridle on, so it’s all very special.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Sepals shoots for second Caulfield Group 1

Sepals (Calyx) will attempt to etch his name into the record books at Caulfield on Saturday when he lines up in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), chasing a rare double following his Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) triumph last month. The Cliff Brown-trained gelding, who delivered a tough on-pace victory under Craig Williams in the Sir Rupert Clarke, will be reunited with Ethan Brown, who guided him to victory at Caulfield in August. Sepals was given four days in the paddock after his Sir Rupert Clarke success and has since returned to Brown’s Mornington stable in fine order. “He knew he’d had a run for a few days after the Sir Rupert Clarke,” Brown said. “He’s always been a good-doer, but it was a late night that night - by the time we finished it was 8:15pm, and he left a dipper of feed, which he never does. He knew he’d had a solid run.” The four-year-old impressed in a recent gallop on the Mornington course proper, and Brown has opted to keep him there rather than send him to Caulfield for a final hit-out. “It’s interesting that we tend to do it for big races,” he said. “Yet horses go to Caulfield first-up and win, so it’s probably more for the older horses.” A slight query remains over Sepals’ ability to see out the mile, with his only previous attempt resulting in a fourth in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind Feroce (Super Seth). “He needs to run the mile on Saturday,” Brown said. “He’s also entered for the Golden Eagle, and running for $10 million would be hard to pass up.”

Linebacker resets after Epsom glitch

All eyes may be on Hong Kong star Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) at the Randwick trials, but another headline act will be Group 1 winner Linebacker (Super Seth), who continues his build-up toward a Golden Eagle (1500m) tilt after a minor setback interrupted his spring. Originally earmarked for last weekend’s Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), Linebacker was scratched from contention after missing a run in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) due to a minor ankle sprain. Trainer Tom Charlton, who trains in partnership with John O’Shea, confirmed the issue was minor but forced them to rethink his schedule. “In simple terms, he sprained an ankle,” Charlton said. “It just meant being on the easy list for a week or so. Once he missed that run, we were never going to the Epsom half-prepared. But if he can have a good couple of weeks now, there might be light at the end of the tunnel in the Golden Eagle, which was always his aim.” The Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner will step out in a 1050-metre trial on Tuesday before likely resuming in the Silver Eagle (1300m) on October 18 as a lead-up to the $10 million Golden Eagle a fortnight later. While the setback was frustrating, Charlton believes it may have been a blessing in disguise. “It might work out for the best,” he said. “You don’t like hiccups during a prep, but if we can have a good trial and go to the Silver Eagle, we’ll be back on track.”

Waterhouse eyes cups glory with Sir Delius

Gai Waterhouse has issued a warning to rivals that her Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Sir Delius (Frankel) still has improvement to come as he builds towards the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The French import has been a revelation since arriving in Australia, winning three of his four starts, including Saturday’s Group 1 at Flemington. Now the $3.50 second favourite for the Cox Plate and outright $3.70 Melbourne Cup favourite, Sir Delius could deliver Waterhouse her first Cox Plate victory before a tilt at the Cup. “I thought the improvement from Caulfield to Flemington yesterday [Saturday], he was 60 per cent better,” Waterhouse, who trains in partnership with Adrian Bott, told Racing.com. “If he can do that again in the Cox Plate and then on Cup Day, well really, Bob’s your uncle. I think he looks very good. He’s big and strong and has come through the run beautifully. It doesn’t surprise me because he eats like a horse—he’s a very, very happy horse.” Meanwhile, fellow import Vauban (Galiway) will join Sir Delius in Melbourne this week after finishing fifth under topweight in The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. “He got back a long way and got into a bit of a traffic jam,” Waterhouse said. “The race was probably too short for him, but he comes to Melbourne Monday night and heads to Caulfield for cup day.” Vauban is rated a $16 chance for the Caulfield Cup and $18 for the Melbourne Cup.

Coolmore confirm War Machine for The Everest

Coolmore have filled their slot for the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), announcing they will partner with Rupert Legh and his fellow owners to run War Machine (Harry Angel) in this year’s edition of the world’s richest turf race. Trained by Ben, Will and JD Hayes, the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) has been unbeaten in four starts since joining the Lindsay Park stable, most recently producing a commanding performance in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington last Saturday. That effort confirmed his credentials for The Everest, where he now sits at $15. “Coolmore has a long-standing relationship with the Hayes family and we’re delighted to team up with Ben, Will and JD for our slot in The Everest this year,” Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier said. “Similarly, there are very few people that put as much into racing as Rupert Legh, so it’s great to offer him and his partners a place in this great race. The last two winners of the race have come through the Stradbroke, so it’s a proven formula, and we’re looking forward to what promises to be another great edition of the race.” Co-trainer JD Hayes confirmed the horse had come through his Gilgai win in “very good order,” while discussions with slot holders had been ongoing in the days following his return.

Perfumist powers to record-breaking win at Randwick

New Zealand-bred mare Perfumist (El Roca) returned to her brilliant best with a commanding all-the-way victory in the $160,000 Melbourne Storm Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Bjorn Baker-trained daughter of El Roca (Fastnet Rock) was a revelation as a three-year-old last season, notching up four consecutive victories across December and January before finishing a close fifth in the inaugural $3.5 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie in March. Drawn well in barrier three on Saturday, jockey Regan Bayliss allowed her to stride to the front early before dictating terms throughout. Bayliss increased the tempo approaching the home turn and Perfumist responded powerfully, surging clear by several lengths at the 300-metre mark. Although favourite Idle Flyer (Dundeel) reduced the margin late, Perfumist was never threatened, scoring by 1.5 lengths and smashing the race record with a time of 1:33.01. “She pulled out the ‘dictate and dominate’ playbook and bounced back to her best,” Baker said. “We might look to the Angst Stakes [Gr 3, 1600m] from here.” Bred by Gerry Harvey at Westbury Stud, Perfumist is out of unraced Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) mare Tapputi, whose brother Cut Me Loose was a multiple winner and Group 2-placed in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m). Purchased for $190,000 by the team of Baker, Phill Cataldo, Jim Clarke, and OTI Racing at the 2023 NZB Ready To Run Sale, Perfumist has now built an impressive record of six wins and three seconds from 15 starts, with career earnings of $542,508.

Rosberg ruled out of spring

Rosberg (Deep Field) has been ruled out for the remainder of the spring after pulling up shin sore following his disappointing run in Saturday’s Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Flemington. The Clinton McDonald-trained three-year-old went into the race as a $4.20 second favourite but was never a factor, missing the start and trailing throughout to finish last – more than ten lengths behind the winner, McGaw (I Am Immortal). Connections were left “dumbfounded” by the performance, with post-race veterinary checks later revealing the cause of his uncharacteristic effort. Rosberg will now head to the paddock for at least eight weeks to recover. “Something’s gone AWOL big time,” McDonald told Racing.com immediately after the race. “He never travelled. As soon as he jumped, he was never on the bit and travelling. We’ve run two bloods off him and scoped him and everything was perfect coming into the race.” McDonald initially instructed vets to scope the colt and check his heart in search of an explanation, with no immediate signs of bleeding or other abnormalities. The subsequent discovery of shin soreness has at least provided some clarity. The setback ends what had been a promising start to Rosberg’s campaign, highlighted by his brilliant McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1000m) victory on debut at The Valley last month. The highly rated son of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) will now be spelled with an eye towards an autumn return.

Vale Warren Huntly

Victorian racing is in mourning following the passing of one of its most respected figures, Warren Huntly, who died on Sunday aged 63 after a long battle with illness. A much-loved form analyst, presenter, and racing identity, Huntly’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the industry, led by Racing Victoria chief executive Aaron Morrison. “Warren was highly respected for his contribution to our industry across numerous roles including as a trackwork clocker, jockey manager, form analyst and presenter,” Morrison said. “Above all else he was an absolute gentleman. He was a popular member of the RSN team and was instrumental to the success of Racing.com while building his reputation as one of the industry’s most trusted form analysts. Warren’s passing will be felt by many, from the participants who worked alongside him to his colleagues in the media and those who regularly tuned in to listen to his work. Our thoughts are with them all at this sad time.” Huntly was one of the inaugural form analysts for Racing.com when it launched as free-to-air Channel 78 in 2015 and continued to appear on air until his health declined. He was widely admired for his insight and professionalism, and famously tipped all eight winners at Kilmore on March 9, 2022, while hosting for the network. Huntly also enjoyed success as an owner, celebrating Group 1 glory when Pernod (Centaine) won the 2002 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) for trainer Mike Moroney.

Afterglo powerful late in Matamata victory

Progressive mare Afterglo (Ardrossan) bounced back to her best with a commanding victory in the Colliers Waikato Rural Real Estate (1400m) at Matamata on Saturday. Trained locally by Stephen Autridge, Afterglo impressed on debut at the track in April but failed to fire when resuming at Ellerslie last month. Acting on jockey Matt Cameron’s advice, Autridge returned her to Matamata and found the perfect assignment in rain-affected conditions. Ridden by Opie Bosson, Afterglo settled midfield before making a sustained run to chase down tearaway leader Just A Tipple (Burgundy) in the straight. She powered through the Heavy 10 ground to score by 2.3 lengths, with Zenith (Time Test) a distant third. “We were hoping she’d be able to run the leader down—it’s not easy to do—but she was terrific,” Autridge said. “Matty told me to forget about her first-up run, she just got cramped for room. Opie gave her a lovely ride today. She’s above average and loves wet ground.” Autridge believes Afterglo will be equally effective on firmer going. “She trialled well on good ground at Ellerslie, so we’re not frightened of better tracks,” he said. “If she keeps improving, we might find a nice race for her over Christmas.” The meeting was later abandoned due to worsening conditions, but Autridge had already scratched Livid Sky (Proisir) from the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m). “She’s ready to go and we’ll look for another target,” he said.

Lady Performer extends career with gritty win at Hawera

Plans to send Lady Performer (Sacred Falls) to the broodmare paddock have been delayed after the evergreen mare produced a determined performance to capture the Johnny Neil Builders (1400m) at Hawera on Saturday. The eight-year-old has been a model of consistency since returning to racing in April, notching a win, two seconds and five thirds in a campaign that has proven both lucrative and career-extending. Facing Rating 75 company for the first time, she was overlooked in betting at $15. Carrying just 52 kilograms under apprentice Amber Riddell, Lady Performer settled near the rear early before creeping into contention approaching the home bend. She loomed strongly at the 200 metres to join Overdraft (Burgundy) in a two-horse battle to the line, the pair wide apart on the heavy track. The photo finish confirmed Lady Performer’s narrow victory by 0.2 lengths. “She’s a really honest mare and tries hard,” trainer-owner Lydia Pickford said. “She’s probably gotten better with the more racing she’s had this season. She’s not the soundest horse, so we nurse her along, but she’s probably the soundest she’s ever been. She really deserved that win.” A bargain $1,200 gavelhouse.com purchase in 2023, Lady Performer has now earned over $136,000 and shown no signs of slowing down. “I was actually going to retire her last year,” Pickford said. “But Leah Hemi told me she’d be fine for another winter. I was going to put her in foal this spring, but you can’t retire her the way she’s going — that’ll probably wait until next year now.”

Diamond Necklace (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) sired his first Group 1 winner on Sunday when the Aidan O’Brien-trained Diamond Necklace (2 f ex Prudenzia by Dansili) recorded an impressive success in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m) at Longchamp. Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the filly extended her unbeaten record to three as she needed only hands-and-heels riding to reel in the front-running, and previously unbeaten, Green Spirit (Kingman) and score by a length. There was a further length and a quarter back to Narissa (Siyouni) in third place. "Christophe wanted her to come here," O’Brien told Sky Sports Racing. "We were worried she would be a bit babyish to come here but he was adamant it'd suit her. She's going to be a lovely Classic filly. She'll be very comfortable starting at a mile and will stay an Oaks trip." Bred by Ecurie Des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm, Diamond Necklace was purchased by M V Magnier for €1.7 million at the 2024 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale and is raced by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, John Magnier and Westerberg. Gilltown Stud stallion Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) sired his 24th individual Group 1 winner when Daryz (3 c ex Daryakana by Selkirk) took out the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp. A showpiece event for the European flat season, the Francis Graffard-trained colt came with a strong late run to collar the Aidan O’Brien-trained Minnie Hauk (Frankel) by a head, with a further five and a half lengths back to Sosie (Sea The Stars) in third place as the two three-year-olds dominated. "This race has an amazing reputation and it shows as when you win it it’s very, very special. I’ve had some big wins, but this one is very special, especially this year," Graffard said. "He was tough. When I was planning to run at York I said to Princess Zahra that we are not going to win but we need to toughen him up for the autumn and I think the defeat at York helped us to win today because my horse for the first time was very professional and mature. When you have a plan in your head and you can see that the plan is working you leave the race very well – it’s a great experience. It was exactly what we planned to do. It’s a big win. I’m very lucky that Princess Zahra and her family give me the confidence to train this amazing horse and to win the Arc with these colours is just crazy." Bred and raced by the Aga Khan Studs, Daryz is a half-brother to fellow Group 1 scorer Dariyan (Shamardal), Grade 2 winner Devamani (Dubawi) and Group 2 winner Darkaniya (Frankel), being out of the 2009 Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m)-winning mare Daryakana (Selkirk). Puerto Rico (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Late Coolmore shuttler Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) had yet another incredible day with his offspring on Sunday as he sired a Group 1 double at Longchamp to take his overall tally of individual Group 1 winners to 18. Wootton Bassett was provided with his 17th individual Group 1 winner when the hugely progressive Puerto Rico (2 c ex April Showers by Galileo) comfortably dispatched of his rivals in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) at Longchamp. In what was a quickfire double for trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Christophe Soumillon, the juvenile colt made all in the 1400-metre Group 1 and only had to be pushed out to beat Nighttime by two and a half lengths in a one-two for the sire. There was a further length and a quarter back to Rayif (Sea The Moon) in third. Bred by the April Showers Syndicate, Puerto Rico is raced by John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. Wootton Bassett’s 18th top-flight winner arrived when the consistent Maranoa Charlie (3 c ex Koubalibre by Galileo) took out the Prix de la Foret (Gr 1, 1400m). Ridden by Aurelien Lemaitre for trainer Christopher Head, the three-year-old colt found plenty for pressure to deny Zarigana (Siyouni) by a length and a quarter. There was a further length and a half back to Ten Bob Tony (Night Of Thunder) in third place. Bred by Haras D'Etreham, Riviera Equine Sarl and Gestut Zur Kuste Ag, Maranoa Charlie was purchased by Broadhurst Agency for €220,000 and races in the silks of Bond Thoroughbred Limited. Asfoora (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Having scored in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York back in August, adding to her win in last year’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot, the seven-year-old mare was strongly supported to add Sunday’s 1000-metre Group 1 to her burgeoning CV.

Ridden by her usual northern hemisphere partner Oisin Murphy, the daughter of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) had a good draw in barrier three and made use of that as she tracked the early pace.

Travelling best of all approaching the final furlong, Asfoora was eased out by Murphy and swept to the lead inside the closing stages to defeat Jawwal (Wooded) by a comfortable half-length.

There was a further two and a half lengths back to She’s Quality (Acclamation), who is part-owned by Aristia Park, in third place.

The race may have been plain sailing for Asfoora, however Dwyer revealed the pre-race build-up was anything but, with the Asfoora team having had passport problems and in real danger of their mare being scratched.

“Just surreal really, we've had a couple of pre-race issues that we've had to work through,” Dwyer said, referencing the fact that Asfoora’s passport was delivered from Chantilly to Longchamp with mere seconds to spare.

Asfoora (AUS)

7yo: (15Aug18 bb m)

Trainer: Henry Dwyer

Owner: Noor Elaine Farm Pty Ltd

Sire: Flying Artie

Dam: Golden Child

Dam's Sire: I Am Invincible

Breeder: Noor Elaine Farm

“We were within about a minute and a half of actually not running. I had an Uber driver on a retainer of about £200 to get the passport here on time!

“It's amazing, since we started this whole journey it has been all about doing new things and racing is experiential, life is experiential so we've tried to experience new things. I'd never been to a race in France and here we are now winning a race on Arc day.

“We were confident that it was fresh new ground and we were hopeful that she'd handle that and that she'd be ok, and as it turns out she was.”

Murphy, who has struck up a brilliant partnership with the high-flying mare having ridden her for all three of her European Group 1 wins, said: "She was fantastic. The sprint course is a fair bit drier than the round course and it was obviously a fresh track. She was basically on the bridle throughout and I didn't have to ask her for much.

“She was fortunate to get a plum draw but her condition was really the best it has been. She still has her coat and that has taken some management.”

Asked about the relationship between himself and Asfoora, Murphy added: “She used to be a bit naughty in the stalls and now she isn't, she used to be on her toes in the preliminaries and now she's not, so I suppose if the rider is quiet and relaxed then the horse will be.”

Akram El-Fahkri, who runs Asfoora under the banner of his stud Noor Elaine Farm, was also on hand to provide a glowing assessment of his record-breaking mare.

"That's correct [she is the first to win in France], but let me say that Black Caviar was an outstanding mare and incomparable," El-Fahkri said.

"However, our mare is also incompatible. There won't be another mare outside of Europe to win all three of these big sprints for a very, very long time.

"The people can give her credit or not, but for me she's true centrefold material."

On the next move with Asfoora, the owner said: "I will take Henry's advice and it seems sensible that she has a rest. Let me have a chat with Henry but it may be worthwhile keeping her in the northern hemisphere.

"She's a darling and she deserves what she has achieved and she never puts in a bad run.”

Meanwhile, as well as celebrating even more success with his star mare on the track, Ballarat-based Dwyer had also been on hand at Saturday evening’s Arqana Arc Sale where he purchased Listed winner Grecian Destiny (Masar) for €200,000 (approx. AU$355,460).

“We've bought a nice horse that I thought was pretty undervalued to be fair,” Dwyer told ANZ News.

“He's made seven starts for three wins and three placings and an unlucky run the other time.

“He is a pretty progressive horse that will go to Australia with a rating in the high 80's I'd say so we should have a little bit of wiggle room there.

“He'll go into quarantine in the next couple of weeks and then head back to Australia when we can where he will have a nice break and hopefully have him out in the autumn and winter next year. I'm very happy to have him.”

Lucky run continues for Rabbit's Foot as Prix Royallieu third tops Arqana Arc Sale

Rabbit's Foot (Golden Horde) topped the Arqana Arc Sale on Saturday evening after running the race of her life in the Prix de Royallieu (Gr 1, 2800m) at Longchamp only hours earlier.

In finishing third to Consent (Lope De Vega) in the Group 1 event, Francois Rohaut's filly had made herself a considerably more valuable prospect as she took the quick trip across Paris to the auction at Saint-Cloud.

The previously Group-placed and Listed Toulouse winner, by Golden Horde (Lethal Force), was bought by Michel Zerolo's Oceanic Bloodstock for €625,000 (approx. AU$1.11 million) – a substantial increase on her €50,000 price tag at the 2023 October Yearling Sale in Deauville when unearthed by Meridian International.

George Scott had a busy few hours in France. The trainer, who had clinched his first Group 1 at Longchamp during the afternoon when Caballo De Mar (Phoenix Of Spain) won the Prix du Cadran (Gr 1, 4000m), signed the docket at €500,000 (approx. AU$888,650) for Al Aali (City Light) on behalf of JS Bloodstock.

The son of City Light (Siyouni) was offered by his trainer, Lucie Pontoir and has gone extremely close to Group and Listed wins, including with a second to Cualificar (Lope De Vega) in the Prix de Guiche (Gr 3, 1800m) and another outing last month when beaten a short-head in La Coupe de Marseille (Listed, 2000m).

Billy Jackson Stops of JS Bloodstock said: "We did the work on Thursday and saw all the horses and highlighted that horse as potential Middle Eastern horse with a potential view on the Qatar Derby. He’ll go to Fawzi Nass.

"We’re really happy have the horse for Victorious Forever to target those big Middle Eastern races. He came highly recommended from connections and I think he’ll be a big part of the team when we head out there to the Middle East."

Relaxx (City Light), another smart filly by the same Haras d'Etreham sire, was later signed up for the same fee by Mandore International and Miguel Clement.

Quinteplus (Telecaster) is heading to Willie Mullins' all-conquering National Hunt yard after being knocked down to his agents Harold Kirk and Pierre Boulard for €470,000 (approx. AU$835,330).

The Telecaster (New Approach) gelding has shown plenty of promise in middle-distance races for trainer Henri Devin and was third in the Prix Frederic de Lagrange (Listed, 2400m) at Vichy in the summer.

Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland signed for the Wertheimer family's Cacofonix, a Lope De Vega (Shamardal) colt who won the Prix Moonlight Cloud (Listed, 1200m) for Yann Barberot. His fee was €460,000 (approx. AU$817,560) while the Aga Khan Studs' Zabiari (Wootton Bassett), fifth in Saturday's Prix Daniel Wildenstein (Gr 2, 1600m), was bought by Astute Bloodstock for €450,000 (approx. AU$799,790). The same team offered the Wildenstein winner Ridari (Churchill), who was bought back for €950,000 (approx. AU$1.68 million).

Zabiari (Credit: Christophe Taniere)

Astute's Louis Le Metayer said of Zabiari: "We’ve had a bit of luck buying at the Arc Sale and we’ve had a bit of luck buying off the Aga Khan with Eliyass and Elamaz, who have won stakes races in Australia.

"Zabiari was a pretty straightforward horse. He’s a miler and he’s a lightly-raced four-year-old who has only had 12 starts and won five races, including two Group 3s. I think he’ll be better on top of the ground and as a gelding because he carries a bit of excess weight.

"He’s a very sound, competitive horse by one of the best stallions in the world in Wootton Bassett and Francis [Graffard, trainer] said he could go on a bit further in distance. We don’t have any set plans for him at the moment."

Le Metayer continued: "I suspect he might go to Ciaron Maher – but it hasn’t been decided yet. I bought him on spec, but many of Eliyass and Elamaz people will be involved. He’s just a really nice horse and very consistent. He was hitting the line strongly today and Francis felt he would be better over 2000 metres.

"We’re looking forward to getting him down to Australia. I think he’s the sort of horse who has the sort of speed who could run first up over 1400 metres and I think he’s the sort of horse who’ll adapt well to the way of racing in Australia."

By close of play, 23 of the 39 offered had been sold at a clearance rate of 59 per cent and an aggregate of €6,240,000 (approx. AU$11.09 million). The average of €271,304 (approx. AU$482,190) and median €255,000 (approx. AU$453,210) were both down on last year's renewal.
