The Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) has traditionally been the domain of the rich and famous, but David and Emma-Lee Browne will be gatecrashing the party with their $14,000 bargain buy McGaw after the speedy son of I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible) bounced out of his first stakes win last Saturday.

Blueblood colts Switzerland (Snitzel), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Ozzmosis (Zoustar) and Exceedance (Exceed And Exel) were all whisked off to stud shortly after winning the Coolmore, but there will be no need for the Hunter Valley farms to approach the Brownes should their gelded “goofball” upstage his supposed superiors at Flemington on Saturday, November 1.

McGaw’s unfashionable breeding and paltry price-tag is perfectly in keeping with the Brownes’ training philosophy and their low-key, no fuss approach to life in general, with an admirable unwillingness to take themselves too seriously providing a refreshing contrast in an industry which is often mired in politics and occasional backstabbing.

Their determination to enjoy the journey persuaded McGaw’s motley crew of owners to knock back some seriously tempting offers from Hong Kong in the wake of his breakout win in the $1 million VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m), and their steadfast resolve has been duly rewarded with a crack at the Coolmore - potentially via the Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.

With regular rider Damian Lane unavailable on Victoria Derby Day given his riding commitments at the Tenno Sho meeting in Tokyo, Lachie Neindorf is tipped to take over in the saddle for the Coolmore due to his impressive recent form and his intimate knowledge of the horse, having routinely partnered McGaw at trackwork and in his recent Flemington jumpout.

The decision is yet to be officially rubber-stamped, but what is certain is that McGaw has now banked almost 60 times his purchase price having taken his prize-money haul to $835,720 with victory in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Flemington last Saturday.

What's On

Given that the Coolmore carries a prize fund of $2 million, there is every chance that his impressive tally will receive another significant hike but McGaw, with his tendency to daydream one minute and stargaze the next, is blissfully unaware of what is at stake.

“Nothing bothers or fazes this horse and he came through the run super,” Emma-Lee Browne told ANZ News.

“He ate everything on Saturday night and was back to his usual goofy self on Sunday. He still doesn’t know what he’s meant to be doing half the time, either in the stables or at the races, but I suppose that’s all part of his charm.

“We’re just working out how we get to the Coolmore, whether we give him another run in the Gothic or just go straight into it with maybe a jumpout the week before. He had quite a big gap between races when he won The Showdown, that seemed to suit him so it’s definitely something we’d consider again.

“I also think the jumpout leading into the Danehill Stakes was a big factor in him winning the race, because it gave him another look at the straight and seemed to help spark him up and get him switched on a bit more. He was still green and had a good look around in the race, but once Damian wound him up he really flew home so it was a massive thrill for everyone in the stable and his owners to see him win a race like that against some quality sprinters.

“Maybe after he ran fifth at his previous start [in the Poseidon Stakes] some of the owners might have regretted turning down the money from Hong Kong, but I’m sure they’re delighted they stuck fat with him now. Obviously the Coolmore will be another huge step up for him and he’ll need to find a few lengths, but his coat hasn’t come through yet so there’s still plenty of scope for improvement.

“To be honest we’re all just pinching ourselves that we’ve got a horse even capable of running in the race, but the horse is in great form and he’s never let us down in the past. He’s been a real marvel and even though we’ll be going up against some of the best sprinters in the world, you only get one crack at the Coolmore so we’ll be giving it a shot.”

Victory for McGaw, who is rated a $14 chance in the early Coolmore markets, would mark a first at racing’s highest level for emerging stallion I Am Immortal. At a service fee of just $8,800 (inc GST) and with two stakes winners to his name, the Swettenham Stud resident represents tremendous value.

With Toronado (High Chaparral) out of action this breeding season due to a significant recent infection and lameness, I Am Immortal and his barn companions will need to take up the mantle at Swettenham.

If McGaw or Philip Stokes’ Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) contender Athanatos (I Am Immortal) can make a timely breakthrough over the coming weeks, the phone of the farm’s principal Adam Sangster is likely to be running hot with some last-minute bookings.

Given that they tend to shop at the lower end of the market, the Brownes quickly caught onto the fact that I Am Immortal’s prodigy were quite capable of outperforming their modest price tags and promptly acquired a handful of his yearlings at the sales earlier this year, including filly Got Tickets who trialled at Caulfield last week.

The one that got away, however, was Lot 354 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, which was instead knocked down to Busuttin Racing. If Team Browne had the benefit of hindsight, with $571,000 in prize-money about to fill the coffers, they might have been in a position to increase their budget - as Emma-Lee explained.

“We love the breed and we did try to buy McGaw’s full-sister at the sales, but we came up just short,” she said.

“I think we went to $150,000 and she sold for $160,000, so it was a shame to miss out on her but the sale was just before his win in The Showdown. If it had been afterwards, I reckon we would have come away with her because the owners could’ve definitely afforded another bid or two with the money they won.

“But that’s life and we’ve still got a few nice two-year-olds by I Am Immortal in the stable which we really like, so hopefully one of them goes on to become the next McGaw.”

McGaw wasn’t the only impressive performer on Saturday, with stablemate Pondalowie (Deep Field) making up significant late ground to finish fourth behind Miraval Rose (Grunt) in the Rose Of Kingston Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

Her co-trainers are now toying with the idea of backing her up at Caulfield this Saturday, either in the Toorak Handicap or the Ladies’ Day Vase (Gr 3, 1600m).

“It was a much-improved run and she’s really enjoying getting up in distance now,” said Browne.

“It was a little bit frustrating because she’s been slow away in her previous runs, whereas on Saturday she jumped well but we had to go back from the wide gate anyway. But she really closed off really sharply and has pulled up very well. We will consider backing her up on Saturday because she’s definitely ready for the mile now, but we’ll see how the fields look before making any decisions.”

One horse who will be lining up on Saturday is Scary (Shocking) as the four-year-old bids to build on his last-start runner-up finish in the R.M. Ansett Classic (Listed, 2415m).

Given that he currently sits in 38th place in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) order of entry, Scary would in all likelihood need to win Saturday’s Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) and incur a weight penalty in order to guarantee a start in Australia’s most famous race.

The Brownes were on track to saddle up their first Melbourne Cup runner when Basilinna (Staphanos) earned a golden ticket via the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m), only for a chipped fetlock to dash their hopes; but with Scary bouncing back to the sort of form that saw him finish second in last year’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), the dream is still very much alive.

“We need to get his rating up to scrape into the Cup, but it was just great to see him find some form at Mornington last time,” said Browne.

“His run was fantastic and he was still carrying a little bit of condition, so he possibly peaked on his run but he should be even fitter on Saturday. He’s a big horse and he wobbled a little bit coming round the turn there at Mornington, so getting back on a bigger track like Caulfield should definitely suit him. It would obviously be a dream to have a runner in the Melbourne Cup, so hopefully we can get there with him.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Private Harry out of The Everest

Private Harry (Credit: Racing Photos)

Yulong have announced that their Group 1-winning four-year-old Private Harry (Harry Angel) will not be representing their slot in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) on October 18 and will instead be sent for a spell. The Nathan Doyle-trained entire, who won his first five starts including The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) before being purchased by Yulong in a big-money deal, has finished unplaced in both starts this campaign, running fifth in both The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) and Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). The son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) came out of last Saturday's Premiere Stakes lame in the near foreleg and he will now be sent for testing before spelling. "It's obviously disappointing but we need to do what's best for the horse," Yulong's chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said. "He's far better than his last two runs would suggest, so there is clearly something amiss that we need to look into further. Nathan Doyle's team will take him into the clinic this week for a thorough investigation, which hopefully will shed some light on the situation and let us plan an appropriate path for him."

Globe to head to Caulfield

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Globe (Charm Spirit) is being aimed at Saturday's Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield, with Price feeling the seven-year-old son of Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) could be at an advantage in the Group 1 contest. There were just nine entries for the 2000-metre event when they closed at midday on Monday and, despite having to take on the likes of Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) this weekend, could have things his own way on the front end. "That's the attraction for Globe, that he gets left alone," Price said. "He's not as good as the others, but it doesn't matter. He'll bowl along in front, he'll give plenty of cheek." The Might And Power will be Globe's first test at Group 1 level and his first start in stakes company since finishing 13th in the Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) in April.

Half Yours team confident on Caulfield Cup chance

Having run a hugely promising fourth in last weekend's Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield, connections of Half Yours (St Jean) are looking forward to running the five-year-old gelding back at the track in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding is now the $3.50 favourite to take out the $5 million event on October 18 following his recent effort. “I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to run fourth in a race before,” Tony McEvoy told Racing.com. “It was a real test for him going up to this level against the genuine top horses in this country over 2000 metres, he was probably looking for the mile and a half. He just jumped a little bit slower than what we thought, which meant he got back further than what we thought but he really sprinted well. I can’t wait to dive into the sectionals, and I thought it was an amazing prep run for two weeks’ time.”

Caulfield Cup penalties for weekend winners announced

Both Valiant King (Roaring Lion) and Royal Supremacy (Make Believe) have incurred penalties for the Caulfield Cup following their respective victories last weekend. Valiant King, who now has a ballot-free slot into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) after winning The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2520m), has been penalised one kilogram for the Caulfield showpiece. His new weight of 52 kilograms now leaves him 27th in order for a Caulfield Cup start. Meanwhile, The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Royal Supremacy has been handed a 1.5-kilogram penalty, taking his Caulfield Cup weight up to 52.5 kilograms which leaves him 26th in order. “It was an easy win for Royal Supremacy on Saturday, he moved into the race effortlessly at the top of the straight and was too strong through the line for his rivals," Racing Victoria’s head of handicapping David Hegan told Racing.com. “As a result, he was worthy of a reassessment and takes a 1.5-kilogram Caulfield Cup penalty to rise off the limit of 51 kilograms to 52.5 kilograms while moving up seven spots to 26th in the order of entry. This places him one spot in the order behind Birdman who carried 1.5 kilograms more than Royal Supremacy in the Metropolitan, but would meet him on level weight terms for that 2.6-length defeat. In the Bart Cummings, off the very strong pace set by Gilded Water, many were found wanting in the latter stages of the race but Valiant King was the exception, barnstorming from the back of the field to win by an expanding 2.75 lengths on the line. His runaway victory earns him a one kilogram Caulfield Cup penalty off the limit of 51 kilograms to 52 kilograms while moving up ten spots to 27th in the order of entry."

New Zealand

Melbourne Cup tilt over for Wolfgang

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hopeful Wolfgang (Exceed And Excel) will return to New Zealand after finishing at the tail of the field in last Saturday’s The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington. Wolfgang, who races as Mister Wolfgang in Australia, won the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and New Zealand St Leger (2500m) last term, then crossed the Tasman for a campaign towards the time-honoured race staged in early November. His co-trainer Peter McKay was pleased with his progress through his first two runs but pulled pin when his charge performed below expectations in the Bart Cummings, which offered a golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup for the winner. “It’s disappointing, we were looking forward to it and he was definitely going to get into the [Melbourne] Cup, he only needed five or six to come out,” he said. “We were getting a bit excited thinking he would be in the race with a couple of good runs in the lead up. I thought his second run over there was good and he was coming on well, but he just didn’t put in at all on Saturday. He had a quick, hard blow straight after the race then recovered really quick, which is generally a sign that they're hurting somewhere or if it was heavy, that they didn’t handle it. But, it was a good, firm track and he trotted up well yesterday [Sunday].” While disappointed, McKay and his son Shaun (training partner) are now targeting a defence of his Wellington Cup crown, which will be run for $400,000 on January 31 at Trentham. “We’ll get him home, reassess things and then go on a programme towards the Wellington Cup,” he said.

Quintessa takes positive step towards Livamol

Quintessa (Credit: Race Images)

Adverse weather has forced multiple Group 1 winner Quintessa (Shamus Award) to take an unorthodox route to next Saturday’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m), with the mare appearing at the Awapuni trials on Monday afternoon. Prepared by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson at Matamata, Quintessa got her preparation off to a flying start winning the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m), but she was scratched from the second leg of the triple crown (Howden Insurance Mile) at Te Rapa, avoiding the heavy surface. With a task of getting her to the Livamol three weeks later, Bergerson nominated the mare for the Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), but withdrew before acceptances, opting to head across to Awapuni for a hit-out over 1300 metres. In the hands of stable rider Opie Bosson, Quintessa settled at the tail of the field through the running, while stablemate Midnight Blue (So You Think) strode to the top for Samantha Collett. Bosson asked her for an effort turning for home and she responded well, striding up to finish second behind Sailor Jack (Jakkalberry). “It’s been a pretty tough time of it with the weather lately, so it was a good opportunity to get on a reasonable surface,” Bergerson said. “Opie was really happy with her trial, she’s pretty lazy without the blinkers on but we wanted to keep them up our sleeve for raceday. I was pleased with how she hit the line and she went past the post a bit as well, so that should bring her on nicely. The trip away will do her the world of good, it’s a fine line getting her fit but keeping the speed in her legs and soundness as well, she takes a bit of managing. Hopefully that will catch us up a bit fitness-wise, I’m looking forward to Saturday-week with her.”

Sailor Jack pleases in home track trial

Sailor Jack impressed trainers Shaun and Hazel Fannin with his trial victory at Awapuni on Monday, and they have their fingers crossed their home track will be back in commission for his first major test of the season. The five-win gelding took out his 1400-metre heat in the hands of Chris Dell, beating a handy field, which included last-start Group 1 winner Quintessa. It was the eight-year-old gelding’s fourth trial this time in, with his trainers searching for better footing. “We were really happy with him,” Hazel Fannin said. “This prep, we would have liked to have had him to a race by now, but there has been a lot of rain around, so we have had to wait a little longer than we expected, but he is still coming to hand really nicely. It was a pretty tidy field today, so we were rapt with how he went.” Fannin is looking forward to Sailor Jack resuming in the next fortnight, with the Feilding Cup (2100m) at Awapuni’s scheduled meeting on November 1 his first major aim of the spring. “We will look to kick him off in the [Rating] 75 mile next Sunday at Waverley,” she said. “Waverley always plays really well, so that should suit him regardless of the weather. All going to plan with the Awapuni track, he’ll hopefully go to the Feilding Cup two weeks after that.”

HK: Fownes and Newnham chase early edge at Happy Valley

Two of the early pace-setters in the 2025/26 trainers’ championship will send strong contingents to Happy Valley on Wednesday night, looking to open up a gap at the top of the standings. Caspar Fownes prepares six runners, hoping to improve on his seven wins so far this season at his favourite hunting ground. Mark Newnham has made an explosive start to his third campaign in Hong Kong, and he saddles seven runners. Three of Fownes’ six have already visited the winner’s arch this season, but none have escaped the attention of the handicapper for their efforts and find themselves in elevated company on Wednesday night. Mighty Commander (Artie Schiller), who will be ridden again by Ellis Wong in the first section of the Class 3 Harbour View Handicap (1200m), is one of Fownes’ leading chances after winning smartly over 1200 metres last time out despite mostly campaigning over 1650 metres. “He seems to be in good form – winning the 1200 [metres] first up in Class 4. Now he goes up to a higher grade,” Fownes said. “It’s always tougher in Class 3, but he’s proven to us that he can be close in Class 3, so there’s no reason why he can’t be competitive again at this distance.” Newnham’s hand is highlighted by Spicy Gold (So You Think) in the second section of the Class 3 Harbour View Handicap (1200m), who returns to his preferred distance after disappointing in his first run this season over 1000 metres three weeks ago. “[1000m] was just a bit sharp for him, but he’s been very consistent at 1200 metres at Happy Valley, and he probably needed the race to bring his fitness up,” Newnham said. “He’s had a good preparation since that race.”

UK: Asfoora to remain in northern hemisphere

Henry Dwyer has revealed that star mare Asfoora (Flying Artie) will remain in Europe for the northern hemisphere winter and will not return to Australia, with a view to taking in another campaign next year. The seven-year-old daughter of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) ran out a ready winner of Sunday's Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp - adding to her wins in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and last season's King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) - and is set to do it all again in 2026. “She’s not coming home,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “It’s too hard to bring them back and acclimatise and the rest of it so we’ll leave her here and have another go. She’ll have eight weeks in the paddock and we’ll worry about a European campaign next year. It’s been such great fun and she has just been a star. She’s earned it after giving us all another wonderful experience.”

UK: Book 1 of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale set to get underway

Europe's premier yearling sale, Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, will get underway on Tuesday. The Book 1 catalogue consists of 537 lots and will begin at 9am in Newmarket. Last year's sale was topped by a Frankel (Galileo) filly out of Group 2-winning mare Aljazzi (Shamardal) that sold to Amo Racing for 4,400,000gns and is now named Partying. In training with Kevin Philippart De Foy, the filly has an entry in next year's Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) but is yet to make the racetrack.

Two for Hightail

Gin Gin (4 f ex Before You Know It by Hard Spun) became the second individual top-flight winner for Hightail (Mineshaft) when landing Sunday’s Spinster Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Keeneland. Ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Brendan Walsh, the four-year-old filly had a length lead inside the final furlong but narrowly held on from the fast-finishing Nitrogen (Medaglia D’Oro) by a head, with a further length and a quarter back to the third-placed Scylla (Tapit). Bred and raced by Calumet Farm, Gin Gin is a half-sister to winner Know It Now (American Pharoah) being out of the Grade 3-placed Hard Spun (Danzig) mare Before You Know It.

US: Final Score too good in Bourbon Stakes

The Todd Pletcher-trained Final Score (2 c Not This Time - Precious Dixie by Benardini) proved too strong for his 11 rivals in Sunday’s Bourbon Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Keeneland, adding a second Graded win to his CV. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr, the juvenile colt hit the front with a furlong left to run and comfortably dispatched of Turf Star (Caravaggio) by a length and a quarter. Gordon Pass (Instilled Regard) finished the same distance further back in third. The win added to Final Score’s victory in the With Anticipation Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f).

26 for Caravaggio

Former Coolmore shuttler Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) sired his 26th individual stakes winner on Sunday when Stark Contrast (2 c ex Catch The Eye by Quality Road) scored by a length in the Zuma Beach Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Kazushi Kimura for trainer Michael McCarthy, the juvenile colt defeated Third Beer (Mendelssohn) with a further neck back to the third-placed Proletariat (Raging Bull) in third. Bred and raced by Jerry and Joan Amerman's Amerman Racing Stables, Stark Contrast is out of the Grade 2-placed Quality Road (Elusive Quality) mare Catch The Eye. Caravaggio, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia for one season in 2018, stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥3,000,000 (approx. AU$30,260).

Seven for Authentic

Spendthrift Farm stallion Authentic (Into Mischief) chalked up his seventh individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Richard E Mandella-trained Brave Deb (2 f ex Nora’s Joy by Street Sense) landed the Surfer Girl Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Mirco Demuro, the juvenile filly ran out a length winner over Scratch It (Tapit) with a further length and three-quarters back to Pentle Bay (Uncle Mo) in third. Bred and raced by Spendthrift Farm, Brave Deb is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Tirupati (Mitole) being out of the Street Sense (Street Cry) mare Nora’s Joy. Authentic stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$15,000 (approx. AU$22,670).

Deja Vu?

Eurocanto (Credit: Racing Photos)

By Lloyd Jackson

ANZ News

Beginning his first season at stud this year is Little Avondale’s Little Brose (Per Incanto), the 2023 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) victor. Although Little Brose carries the AUS suffix he was conceived at Sam and Dame Catriona Williams’ Little Avondale Stud. The same is true of Eurocanto (Per Incanto) whose debut in Flemington’s Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) caught the eye on Saturday.

Eurocanto shared last at the junction but from the 300 metres Mark Zahra eased him wider where he launched a strong bid down the centre of the track, overpowering his rivals over the final 100 metres. He certainly had no favours in the running so to keep finding when he saw daylight was more than promising. Even co-trainer JD Hayes commented: “It’s a little bit early for comparisons, but he was a little bit ‘Brosey’ there,”, in an interesting deja vu comparison to Little Brose - who was trained by the same camp.

Similar to Little Brose, Eurocanto was foaled in Australia after his dam Shespending (Savabeel) was exported in March of 2023 while carrying him. Shespending has quite a sales history. She first appeared at the 2019 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale fetching $170,000 when purchased by Guy Mulcaster.

Her race career consisted of one start and at three she was sold for $180,000 as a maiden mare at the 2021 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale. In New Zealand she produced an older brother to Eurocanto (who has yet to race) in 2022 and found herself back on the Gold Coast for the 2023 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale, this time realising $260,000.

In January, Eurocanto was offered, also on the Gold Coast, at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale and was knocked down to the Hayes training operation for $250,000.

Apart from his sire Per Incanto (Street Cry), Eurocanto’s family is pure Waikato Stud’s for three generations. The sires of each of his dams are a giveaway. His dam is by Savabeel (Zabeel), his grandam is by Pins (Snippets) and his great grandam is by O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), all stalwarts of Waikato Stud and all highly successful.

His fourth dam, Iguazu, reconnects to Little Avondale Stud via Carolingian (Bletchingly) who stood his first season at Little Avondale Stud in 1994, making Iguazu a member of Carolingian’s first crop.

Iguazu was a splendid racemare who scored 12 wins, two of which were at Group 3 level and a further six of which were Listed wins. At stud she produced Melbourne Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner and Group 1-placed Splashing Out (O’Reilly) as well as Iguazu’s Girl (Redoute’s Choice), the dam of dual Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner and successful sire Sacred Falls (O’Reilly). The latter ranks as a three-quarter brother to Splashing Out.

Splashing Out was even more successful at stud than on the track, producing three Group winners, namely dual Group winner Splurge (Savabeel), dual Group winner Shopaholic (Pins) and Group 1-placed Packing Pins (Pins).

Splashing Out also produced Eurocanto’s stakes-placed grandam Spending (Pins), dam also of Sydney Listed winner Tilianam (Savabeel), a sister to Eurocato’s dam Shespending. This is a consistent stakes producing family.

Eurocanto marks Per Incanto’s 34th individual stakes winner with a further 36 performers achieving black type.

So much for the equinox

According to the calendar, the equinox (when the sun is directly over the equator), marking the beginning of spring, occurred on September 22.

Blossoms are out, a smattering of bright green leaves are appearing on some trees and the temperatures are gradually thawing, though not quickly enough. Tell that to horse trainers and they will likely just point to the ground and remind you of all the moisture which is responsible for the continuing heavy tracks.

The gremlins stuck around this past weekend. Both Matamata and Hawera staged their meetings on deep surfaces with Matamata having to abandon their final three races.

A lightning strike at Matamata after race 4 signalled problems and pushed the program back. Oddly, race 5 was raced in bright sunshine but surface water along the back straight caused officials to call off the remainder of the meeting which included the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m).

A bleak day greeted patrons at Hawera also but the program was able to be completed and one mare, Hi Yo Sass Bomb (Complacent), successful in the Grangewilliam Stud-sponsored Taranaki Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), didn’t mind one bit.

The now seven-year-old has a penchant for rain-affected tracks and even though Saturday’s feature might have been shorter than she prefers, her class, combined with the track were more than sufficient for her to shine.

Hi Yo Sass Bomb arrived at Hawera with five wins from just 24 starts, a light career indeed for one her age. Three wins were achieved on heavy tracks and two on soft tracks including the 2024 running of Trentham’s Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Among her best non-winning performances was a second in the 2024 Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) behind star mare Snazzytavi (Tavistock).

Five original acceptors scratched which weakened the final field, effectively playing further into the hands of the winner who was slowest away. She recovered to sit fourth at the 1000 metres but a combination of a slow pace and a compact field saw her second last into the straight. Rider Chris Dell searched for a path wider and when the mare saw daylight she charged after the leaders and had the race comfortably under control with 50 metres remaining but the 1:32.24 told the story of the track and the pace.

Hi Yo Sass Bomb is the sole winner from her five-race winning dam Hi Yo Soo (Spartacus). Her grandam, Listed-placed Hi Yo Wassup (Al Akbar), is a sister to Group 3-placed Luscious Lady, grandam of Hezashocka (Shocking), another performer whose best wins have taken place on rain-affected tracks.

A $1.4 million earner, Hezashocka took out the Ellerslie Championship Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m), raced in heavy conditions, as a three-year-old before his export to Australia where he landed Brisbane’s Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and the Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2200m), both on deep tracks.

Older readers may remember three further family members who relished winter conditions. Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) winner Wiremu (Arctic Explorer) plus the brother and sister combo of Wiri (Resurgent) and Ruakiwi Lass (Resurgent), were all adept in bad ground. Resurgent (The Phoenix), the half-brother to successful sires Knight’s Romance (Royal Charger), Pride Of Kildare (Royal Charger) and Admiral’s Luck (Precipitation), was a noted sire of mudlarks but we are talking sixty years ago. Maybe family traits endure?

In Sydney, one of the two debut new season two-year-old stakes winners can claim a connection to the New Zealand Stud Book.

Incognito's story is that the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner represents the initial crop of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) victor Stay Inside (Extreme Choice). That’s not all. Incognito has the distinction of realising $1 million at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the first winner from his dam, three-race winner Bleu Zebra (I Am Invincible), who ranks as a half-sister to Melbourne Listed winner Fox Swift (Foxwedge). His grandam Runway Runaway is by Starcraft (Soviet Star) from Pay My Bail (Justice Prevails), a New Zealand-bred performer who was rated the top filly of her year.

Another accolade achieved by Pay My Mail was as Champion NZ Sprinter of 2004 as a result of wins in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and the Arawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m). She also placed second in Ellerslie’s Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).

Pay My Bail has been equally successful in the breeding barn. Her eight foals include seven winners, two of which are stakes winners. Her best foal is White Moss (Mossman), winner of eight races, four stakes - all Group races - the Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) two years apart plus the Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) and the Nivison Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

What’s going on?

The season is barely two months old but a look at the current New Zealand sire premiership makes one wonder what exactly is going on.

Thanks largely to the win by Waitak (Proisir) in the Howden Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), Proisir (Choisir) heads the list. The remainder of the list looks a little out of whack.

Currently second is Time Test (Dubawi), the former shuttler (until 2023) to Little Avondale Stud but who has since been banished to Turkey.

Third is Belardo (Lope De Vega), another whose shuttling days to Haunui Farm came to an end in 2022.

Fourth is El Roca (Fastnet Rock), who is enjoying consistent success at Westbury Stud and whose Perfumist was an impressive winner of the Benchmark 94 Melbourne Storm Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. On that run, surely a stakes win is just around the corner.

Fifth is Complacent (Authorized), sire of Saturday’s Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Hi Yo Sass Bomb. Complacent’s last sire season in New Zealand was 2021. He is now domiciled in France.

Sixth is retired Darci Brahma (Danehill) while seventh is Zed (Zabeel) who is dead. Eighth is Vadamos (Monsun), yet another who no longer shuttles. Vadamos stood his last season at Rich Hill Stud in 2023.

Westbury Stud’s Redwood (High Chaparral) holds ninth and Waikato Stud’s Ocean Park (Thorn Park) stands tenth.

Between 11th and 20th, four stallions are no longer available. Jakkalberry (Storming Home) is dead and so are 17th placed Atlante (Fastnet Rock) and 19th placed Tavistock (Montjeu). Currently 13th is Telperion (Street Cry) who is now at stud in China.

Missing from the top 20 is Champion Sire Savabeel (Zabeel), currently 21st but it is almost certain that he will surge up the rankings as the tracks dry out and the bigger stakes money is on offer.
