Progeny by a diverse mix of proven and emerging sires are set to go under the hammer at Thursday’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale, with Kenmore Lodge’s draft neatly encapsulating that balance.

Run by Kellie and Cameron Bond, the Wyreema-based nursery managed a 100 per cent clearance rate at the sale last year, its nine quality lots grossing $775,000 with a top lot of $260,000 and an average of $86,000. Those figures made Kenmore a top four vendor at the 2024 auction, and its 2025 team of 11 juveniles looks even more promising.

“They’re by a mix of stallions and it’s probably as good a draft as we’ve ever presented at this sale,” Cameron Bond told ANZ News. “Proven sires, freshman sires, sires that have just had their first runners this weekend gone, it is definitely a quality draft.”

A headline act for the farm and one that has particular relevancy is Lot 101 – a Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) colt out of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Zing. Newgate Farm’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning first-season welcomed his first stakes winner from his very first runner last Saturday when Incognito took the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick.

Bond expressed his excitement over the colt, who breezed 200 metres in 10.53 seconds at the Gold Coast on September 23.

“The Stay Inside’s a quality horse, a first foal – he’s a cracking type for a first foal,” he said. “He has breezed up well – his data was outstanding, his stride length and frequency were very good.

“We’re pretty excited about him: he’s also out of a mare that we purchased and we’re pretty excited about her progeny too. He’s been fairly popular since we arrived.”

A Group 3-placed racemare, Zing sold to Kenmore for $310,000 via Inglis Digital in July 2022. Her page boasts plenty of black type, she being half-sister to a stakes winner and stakes-winning producer in Crafty Irna (Starcraft), that pair each out of New Zealand Group 1 winner and 2003 Singapore Horse of the Year Zirna (Deputy Governor).

“We’ve got quite a few by Stay Inside to present at sales over the next 12 months and we’ve broken in a few, and they’ve all been fairly impressive,” Bond added. “Golden Slipper winners rarely fail at stud.”

The other Golden Slipper winner represented in the draft is Kia Ora’s Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), with Kenmore boasting the only filly by last season’s leading first-sire by winners in the sale (Lot 80). The operation sold subsequent stakes-winning filly by the son of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) – Recuperato – at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last January for $210,000.

“She’s a nice filly with heaps of strength,” Bond said of the daughter of the dual winner, Thinking Cap (So You Think). “We sold Farnan’s stakes-winning filly Recuperato as a yearling last year, so he’s a stallion that we’ve got a fair bit of time for.”

Kenmore will also offer the offspring of two more first-season stallions in Lot 27 – a filly by Newgate Farm resident Wild Ruler (Snitzel) – and Lot 68, a filly by Aquis Stallions’ Jonker (Spirit Of Boom).

What's On

“She’s a cracking type with heaps of strength,” Bond said of Lot 27. “The Jonker has a nice pedigree again; we’ve had a few of the Jonkers through the stable and this is a filly with a great action – all the riders love her when they hop off.

“I think anyone that watches her breeze will be duly impressed. She ran up in a pretty slick time [10.31 seconds].”

The fastest of the juvenile breeze up times, recorded across four sessions from Seymour and the Gold Coast, was that of Lot 157 – Kenmore’s Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) colt out of Flaunt (Drumbeats) – who stopped the clock in 10.05 seconds.

Bond anticipates a favourable result with the colt bred by Windermere Stud owner and former trainer Steve Tregea, who despite his slick breeze is out of a half-sister to Tregea’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runner-up Incentivise (Shamus Award).

A dual winner, Flaunt is also a three-quarter sister to dual stakes-winning sprinter and Waikato Stud-based sire Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice).

“Fastest two-year-old in the sale – he’s a cracking horse and he has plenty of scope too,” Bond said.  “He’s out of a half-sister to Incentivise who won a Caulfield Cup and ran second in a Melbourne Cup. I think he’ll only keep improving with time as well.”

Two other colts who drew attention at the breeze ups were Lot 84, a son of Written Tycoon out of the winning Not A Single Doubt mare True Moonlight, and Lot 108 by Pierata (Pierro) out of Angel Dane, a four-time-winning daughter of Zizou (Fusaichi Pegasus).

“The Written Tycoon had a very good breeze [10.14 seconds], he was a nice foal out of a Not A Single Doubt mare,” Bond said. “We’ve sold a Group 1 winner by the sire at this very sale before [Tyzone] and we love Not A Single Doubt mares at Kenmore Lodge.

“The Pierata – Angel Dane colt has got a massive action. He breezed up very well [10.16] and he’s just continued to improve the whole time he’s been in work.”

Kenmore has enjoyed a strong start to inspections, with Bond noting steady buyer interest in the draft’s Spirit Of Boom, Stay Inside, Pierata and Written By (Written Tycoon) youngsters.

“Inspections have been quite a steady flow of people, it’s only early yet – we just started parading yesterday [Monday] but we’ve got a steady flow which is good,” he said. “The Spirit Of Boom, Stay Inside and Pierata have probably been the most popular, and we’ve got a Written By [Lot 43] that’s proven quite popular.

“It’s really hard because everybody asks what our best horse is but we’ve actually got a really good spread of horses this year.”

Bond said the team has done everything to present a high-quality draft at the Gold Coast, and now it’s up to the market to respond.

“It’s really hard to get a gauge [on the market], but we’ve brought a high quality draft of horses so we’ve done our part,” he said. “We have just got to see what happens with the market I guess.

“It’s the best our horses have ever breezed up, as far as times they’ve got amazingly well. It’s something we take a lot of pride in, the way we educate our horses, so hopefully they can go on to good racing careers.”

Kenmore has enjoyed plenty of success at the Magic Millions Horses-in-Training Sale, topping the auction in 2010 when turning a $15,000 Gonski (Danehill) yearling into a $180,000 two-year-old, and in 2017 when a Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) colt sold for $320,000 after being passed in for $40,000 as a yearling.

That success underpins Bond’s call for continued growth and stronger domestic participation: “We have sold a lot of good horses through this sale and we’d really like to see the interest from Australian owners and trainers increase a bit but obviously the Asian buyers are a massive part of the sale. I’d like to see it keep developing.”

Laurie’s colts ready to rock and roll in the Caulfield Guineas

By Paul Symes

ANZ News

Vinrock (Credit: Racing photos)

Matt Laurie is confident that a wide draw will be no barrier to success for Vinrock (I Am Invincible) in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) as the crack colt headlines the stable’s three-pronged attack on the stallion-making contest this Saturday.

Laurie quipped that it might be the first and last time his wife Kate is handed the dubious honour of drawing the marble after she plucked barrier 14 for Vinrock, who will need to jump much cleaner than he did when he was downed as the odds-on favourite in last month’s Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Given Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) also tasted defeat for the first time in over a year on AFL Grand Final Eve, Laurie may be keen to erase the occasion from his memory but the Mornington horseman is nothing if not resilient, and is steadfast in his belief that both horses can gain redemption in their respective Group 1 races at Caulfield.

With a maximum of eight rivals facing her, and potentially as few as five, Treasurethe Moment may encounter a tactical affair when she is reunited with Damian Lane in the Might And Power (Gr 1, 2000m) but the dilemma is quite the opposite for Vinrock and his stablemates Vega For Luck (Lucky Vega) and Prestige Ole (Ole Kirk) in the Caulfield Guineas, which has drawn a full field of 16 (plus two emergencies).

Sydneysiders have claimed bragging rights in recent years, with colts trained and campaigned primarily in the Harbour City taking out four of the last five editions of the Guineas.

If the bookmakers are to be believed, that trend seems set to continue with Chris Waller’s duo Wodeton (Wootton Basset) and Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), who both had their first look at Caulfield on Tuesday morning, heading the early betting markets. However, provided Vinrock can cross from the wide alley without expending too much energy, the $7 third elect looks best placed of the ‘home’ contingent to repel the interstate raid and provide his famous father with a first win in the time-honoured contest.

Mark Zahra partnered Super Seth (Dundeel) to one of the more audacious Guineas wins in recent years when the pair somehow hunted down Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) in 2019, but Laurie is hopeful Vinrock’s pilot takes up a more prominent position in the run on Saturday.

“We’ll probably know our fate with Vinrock fairly early,” said Laurie, who revealed that the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) would be high on the agenda should the colt come through the Guineas in good order.

“Hopefully it was just a one-off last time when he was slowly away at The Valley. If he can show his customary gate speed, we’ll definitely look to press on and either take up the lead or sit pretty close to it, because he’s much more effective when he’s ridden positively. Obviously it depends on what the other runners do, I’m sure it will be a high-pressure race with plenty of jostling for position as usual, so Mark will have his work cut out but he gets it right more often than not.

“The horses coming down from Sydney will probably be the hardest to beat as usual, but Vinrock comfortably beat both Wodeton and Rivellino in the Sires’, so we know he’s well and truly up to it. He’s had a couple of good searching gallops since his last run, so he should be fit and ready to go on Saturday.

“He looks in great order so bar the draw, everything has gone to plan. I think Kate felt a bit guilty when she drew barrier 14 but it’s a pretty thankless task, so we’ll let her off this once.”

In her defence, Laurie’s better half fared far better with the stable’s other runners, with Vega For Luck set to jump from barrier seven under Jamie Mott, while Prestige Ole and his jockey Harry Coffey will begin from gate four.

Laurie readily concedes that Vinrock is clearly his top seed as the $300,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling purchase goes in search of a third victory in elite company. But Vega For Luck, who began his career in New Zealand before being acquired by Yulong and transferred to Laurie’s stables, could live up to his name and find fortune when he steps up to the mile for the first time in his career.

The colt defied all bar Estremo (Extreme Choice) with a bold front-running display in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) last time, and while the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) may have provided a more accurate pointer in recent years, Private Life (Written Tycoon) used the Prelude as a springboard to success in the Guineas 12 months ago.

Given that he comfortably beat home Planet Red (Admire Mars) in the Prelude, it is perhaps a surprise that Vega For Luck is quoted at twice his rival’s price but Laurie believes the market may have underestimated the colt, who bids to become his sire’s second stakes winner in Australia after Within The Law.

“He’s been going really well since his last run and his work this morning was spot on,” said Laurie.

“He probably lacks a bit of class and quality compared to Vinrock, but he more than makes up for it with his heart. He’s such an honest and genuine horse who tries his hardest every time he goes to the races.

“He really digs deep when the pressure’s on, and there’s no more pressure than in a Group 1 race like the Caulfield Guineas. So even though Vinrock is our number one seed, I’m pretty confident Vega [For Luck] will rise to the occasion on Saturday.”

While the team from Yulong will be keeping their fingers crossed for both Vinrock and Vega For Luck, it is perhaps another runner on Saturday who carries the heavier weight of expectation as Treasurethe Moment seeks an 11th win – and fifth at the elite level – in an intriguing renewal of the Might And Power.

On paper, the $1 million contest appears to be a match race between Laurie’s mare and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock), whose last-start second to Sir Delius (Frankel) in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) makes him a worthy contender.

Treasurethe Moment readily accounted for Buckaroo in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), but she was subsequently unable to extend her picket fence when a rejuvenated Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) ran riot in the Feehan Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m). However, given she had missed a whole week of work with a (mercifully mild) bout of colic, the dual Oaks winner could certainly be forgiven the minor blot on an otherwise exemplary copybook.

With Damian Lane returning from suspension to renew acquaintances with the mare, who is yet to taste defeat under his stewardship, Laurie feels she is primed to preserve her flawless record at Caulfield when she makes her fourth competitive outing at ‘The Heath’.

“She seems like a really happy horse at the minute,” he told ANZ News.

“Her work over the weekend and again this morning was excellent, so we think we’ve got her back on track. I was probably a little disappointed straight after the Feehan, but on reflection meeting Pride Of Jenni after the setback we had was probably a pretty tough task. She was a month between runs and she had missed some work, so in the circumstances she still went pretty well and she was always going to improve with the run under her belt.

“I would prefer it if there were more runners on Saturday, because I find it’s a harder watch with the small fields and you can sometimes come unstuck. But Damian gets on so well with her and we do think she’s getting back to the mark, so hopefully they can knock off another Group 1 together.

“If she runs well on Saturday, then it’s all systems go for the Cox Plate. A few other horses have really put their hands up in recent weeks so it’s going to be a fascinating race, but I’m fairly confident that she’ll remind people she’s still a live contender come Saturday.”

Godolphin confirms Tempted for The Everest

Tempted (Credit: Racing Photos)

Godolphin have chosen Tempted (Street Boss) to represent them in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Royal Randwick a week on Saturday. Trained by Ciaron Maher, Tempted has quickly established herself among Australia’s leading three-year-old sprinters, winning four of her eight starts and earning more than A$1.68 million. As a two-year-old, Tempted captured the Riesling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), while she also finished third in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). This season she won the Run to the Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) and was third in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) behind Beiwacht (Bivouac). “Tempted is a top-class filly. She’s in great form and three-year-olds have a strong record in a race like The Everest,” said Godolphin Australia Managing Director Andy Makiv. “She represents everything we stand for at Godolphin. She’s by one of our shuttle stallions, and was bred, raised, and developed across our farms. To see her line up in The Everest is a proud moment for everyone involved.” Tempted will be ridden by Craig Williams, teaming again with Ciaron Maher, the trainer-jockey combination that won The Everest with Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) in 2024.

Buckaroo to test credentials in Might And Power

Imported galloper Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) looms as a key figure in shaping both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate fields when he contests the Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) this Saturday. “Straight after the Might And Power on Saturday, we’ll know where he’s going,” managing part-owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.com. “If he was to win the Might And Power well, then we’ll go to the Cox Plate. If he runs well and looks to be wanting more ground, then we’ll back him up in the Caulfield Cup. His form against Sir Delius (second to him in the Underwood) shows that he is up to those horses. The form is all around him so I can’t see why he wouldn’t be competitive in the Cox Plate.” If Buckaroo heads to the Cox Plate, Kheir will likely have Birdman as his Caulfield Cup runner. “Birdman probably sneaks in the Caulfield Cup now on the latest order of entry, so that helps to have a lightweight horse in there,” Kheir said. “For Valiant King, it was a huge run, so I think the Caulfield Cup might come up a bit quick for him. Potentially, Buckaroo could go Cox Plate, Birdman to the Caulfield Cup and Valiant King will go to maybe the Moonee Valley Cup into the Melbourne Cup.” Kheir also has Leica Lucy (Derryn) in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday.
“I think she’ll run well, especially if she can run straight. She was very good first-up over 1400 metres and this looks good for her as she’s so much sharper than I thought she’d be,” he said.Kheir will also have Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) contest The Everest at Randwick on October 18. “He’s flying that horse. The Everest might end up being a perfect set-up for him. You know he’ll be coming the last 200 metres. If he gets there, he will get there very late,” Kheir said.

Hayes confident Ka Ying Rising on track for Everest

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) had his first official Australian trial less than two weeks out from The Everest and trainer David Hayes is confident the world’s top-rated sprinter will be ready for his $20 million target.

In a star-studded 1000-metre heat at Randwick on Tuesday morning, the gelding finished third under regular rider Zac Purton, beaten a head by Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Linebacker (Super Seth), with Overpass (Vancouver) splitting the pair. The trio cleared out from the rest, stopping the clock at a sharp 58.39 seconds with the final 600 metres run in 33.67.

King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) contenders Mr Brightside (Bullbars) and Fangirl (Sebring) filled the next two placings, while Everest-bound pair Joliestar (Zoustar) and Angel Capital (Harry Angel) were among those further back after pulling early.

Ka Ying Rising, unbeaten in his past 13 starts and the current $1.50 Everest favourite, was not pushed by Purton, instead using the trial as a tune-up after a month between runs.

“It was a good, solid trial but he did need it,” Hayes said. “He had a really good, hard hit out, he probably went a bit easier than the ones behind him. I promise he'll be twenty pounds lighter next week. He blew a few cobwebs out and he'll really come on a lot for that and he'll have a nice gallop on Monday [October 13] and he'll be right for the big one.”

Purton added: “He was certainly feeling the moment a little bit and then carrying the extra condition, compared to his racing weight, on the softer ground he felt obviously it a little bit. “The ground was a bit softer than what he's used to. I thought he got through it okay, it's a pass mark but I think he needs to be better on race day. That's the challenge we wanted to take and we look forward to it.”

Rated the world’s premier sprinter this year with an international mark of 126, Ka Ying Rising has won 14 of 16 starts in Hong Kong.

“It's a bit different coming home, in Hong Kong you have a small pool of horses, so you're less likely to get a superstar. You only get ten, twelve new horses, and for him to turn up, I really didn't expect that,” Hayes said.

Eleven of the 12 Everest slots have been filled, with Yulong Investments searching for a replacement for Private Harry (Harry Angel).

Aeliana to miss Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate still possible

Aelina (Credit: Racing Photos)

Aeliana (Castelvecchio) has ruled out of the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) at Tuesday’s third declaration stage, leaving just 29 horses in the $5 million feature. Trainer Chris Waller made the call after assessing the four-year-old mare’s preparation. “She hasn’t fully developed yet, I think she’s still a prep away… she just hasn’t thrived since being down here,” Waller told Racing.com. “We’ve still got to make a call whether she pushes on any further.” Aeliana remains in contention for the $6 million Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 25, though she could still be sent to the paddock or returned to Sydney for a lighter assignment to finish off a winless spring campaign. Other notable Caulfield Cup withdrawals at the third declaration stage included Golden Path (Belardo) and King Charles III’s Gilded Water (Fastnet Rock). The Cox Plate field was cut from 30 to 16, with Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Fangirl (Sebring) among those withdrawn. Late nominations for the Cox Plate remain open until noon on October 20 for a $200,000 payment, with a reduced $100,000 fee available for eligible three-year-olds.

New Zealand

Juveniles to debut for Ormsby

Cambridge trainer Chad Ormsby will debut a pair of youngsters at Avondale on Wednesday, though wet track conditions may affect one of them. Two-year-old gelding State Of Valour (Sword Of State) impressed in a 730-metre Te Rapa trial last month and will make his raceday debut in the Tulloch Café 2YO (1000m). “He had a nice trial and he has trained on well,” Ormsby said. “He really loves his work, so that helps with these young two-year-olds. It’s not ideal conditions but we will probably get the ball rolling regardless tomorrow.” The track was rated Heavy 10 on Tuesday, and stablemate Merini (Written Tycoon) may miss her debut. “She is a slow-maturing filly and showed us in her last trial what we have been waiting for,” Ormsby said. “I am not certain of running her tomorrow. We have been waiting for her for a little while, so we can wait a little bit longer if we need to… we will just weigh up our options tomorrow morning.” Kygo Star (Wootton Bassett), runner-up on debut at Taupo last month, is also set to run. “He has trained on well since his first-up run and he should cop the weather a little bit. It’s probably not ideal, but he is a horse that has trained on soft ground and trained well. I am expecting him to run well,” Ormsby said.

Read About It back on track after year-long setback

Robbie Patterson had high hopes for Read About It (Wrote) last season before the rising star’s progress was halted by illness. The New Plymouth trainer had regarded the son of Wrote (High Chaparral) as a genuine New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) prospect until breathing issues intervened. “He was one of the most promising young horses I’ve had for sure, and then he started to make a bit of noise,” Patterson said. “He got some growths in his upper airways, and we treated him for a long time, but they wouldn’t go away. We ended up getting them cut out and it’s taken a year to get to where we are now. These things seem to pick on the better ones.” Read About It returned in an open 1000-metre trial at Awapuni on Monday, finishing an encouraging fourth under Kelly Myers. “He trialled up really nicely, it was a quiet trial because he hasn’t done a lot and Kelly was happy with him,” Patterson said. “He makes a noise in his breathing, but it’s not affecting him at the moment, so we’re leaving him alone. He’ll have another trial and then we’ll find a race for him and see where he ends up. If he has to have another operation, we’ll do that, but if it doesn’t affect him then we’ll put up with the noise he makes and push on.” Read About It, a debut second as a two-year-old, went on to win the Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) in his only subsequent start. “Obviously, he hasn’t been knocked around and he’s a very natural horse. He’s only a four-year-old, so he could hopefully race competitively for a few years yet, there’s still plenty of time,” Patterson said.

OTI Racing officially enters New Zealand market

OTI Racing is officially going trans-Tasman, with the Australian syndicator becoming a licensed New Zealand syndicator this week. “We are now a licensed syndicator in New Zealand, which means we can offer horses to the public [in New Zealand],” OTI Racing principal Terry Henderson said. “They will get the same offering as the Australians do, which could be New Zealand or Australian horses, trained by New Zealand or Australian trainers. We will certainly be racing more horses in New Zealand.” OTI Racing has been a large investor in New Zealand thoroughbred racing for many years and their silks have also been prevalent on this side of the Tasman, headlined by Vin De Dance’s (Roc de Cambes) victory in the 2018 edition of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). “We have had such a long relationship with New Zealand horses and trainers that it was a natural progression,” Henderson said. “So many of our Group 1 winners have been New Zealand-bred horses. I think in the last three years over 60 per cent of the horses that we have raced have been New Zealand-sourced. We have always relished the idea, as we have in Europe, that they do their early work in their home country and then come to Australia when they are ready. We have done that with quite a lot of horses over the years.”

International

11 for Victor Ludorum

The Francis Graffard-trained Family Secret (2 f ex Gallic by Kodiac) became the 11th individual winner for Darley shuttler Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) when she broke his maiden in a 1600-metre event at Lyon-Parilly on Tuesday. Having the third start of her career, the filly defeated White Night (Night Of Thunder) into second with Persian Centurion (Persian King) finishing third. Family Secret was bought by Paul Nataf for €90,000 Arqana August Yearling Sale and she is out of dual winner Gallic (Kodiac), who in turn is out of Listed scorer Gallipot (Galileo). Victor Ludorum is standing at Kelvinside for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

UK: Godolphin fork out 3,700,000gns for Sea The Stars colt

At the time of going to press, a colt by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) was leading the way at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale after Godolphin stretched to 3,700,000gns (approx. AU$7,914,110) to secure the Longview Stud-consigned youngster. The colt out of the Listed winner Crystal Zvezda (Dubawi), making the colt a three-quarter brother to her half-sibling, multiple Group 1-winning champion Crystal Ocean (Sea The Stars). "He is from a very good stud farm," said Godolphin’s talent scout Anthony Stroud. "He is by Sea The Stars and from a great Rothschild family that goes well with sire. This colt is majestic the way he moves and walks, he is a lovely horse. He stood out for us and is the one we really wanted. You have to pay for the ones you really want, and he was that horse. You always have to pay more than you want!"
