Inspections hit full swing on the Gold Coast on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s Magic Millions Horses In Training Sale, with vendors reporting solid interest across a varied catalogue.

With 230 lots on offer – predominantly two-year-olds with the addition of 20 more mature racing prospects – the sale once again gives buyers opportunity to secure well-bred ready-to-race horses.

What's On

A top vendor at last year’s sale, where their 12 lots grossed $1.17 million, Nolen Racing have returned with a quality 18-strong draft highlighted by two well-bred sons of Coolmore’s first-season sire St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni).

While acknowledging the market will be competitive, there was a clear sense of confidence within the Nolan Racing camp about the strength and preparation of their draft.

“I think it’ll be a tough sale, a buyers’ sale, but I’m reasonably confident,” Nolen Racing representative John Jeffs told ANZ News.

“Inspections have been frantic today [Wednesday]. They had been quiet leading up to yesterday afternoon but today has been frantic which is a great barometer.

“I have got 18 lovely horses, and they’ll be on the market early and we’ll be hoping for the best. We don’t have huge expectations, they will be on the market early, but we’re confident in what we’ve got.

“We have two lovely St Mark’s Basilicas and a lovely Cosmic Force, and I’ve also got a lovely Written By colt. Generally speaking, I’ve got a very good draft.

The first of the colts by St Mark’s Basilica, a sire who welcomed his first Group 1 winner over the weekend when Diamond Necklace dominated in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m), is Lot 17 out of Mediation (Azamour).

Purchased for $60,000 Book 2 of Magic Millions’ flagship yearling sale in January, his dam is a half-sister to Listed winner Saltonstall (Pivotal), that pair each out of Group 2-winning mare Macleya (Winged Love).

Meanwhile, Lot 65 out of Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Secret Mak was a $50,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. The dam is a half-sister to four stakes winners, including Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Covertly (Metal Storm).

Jeffs said the colts were quite imposing types.

“Lot 17, the chestnut has got ‘Derby’ written all over him,” he said. “He just looks a stayer, where Lot 65 looks more like a runner. He looks like a six-furlong to a mile horse.”

The Nolen draft also includes a colt by Newgate Farm’s Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) (Lot 183) out of the unraced All Too Hard (Casino Prince) mare Kisses For Chloe, herself a half-sister to Hong Kong Group 1 winner Green Birdie (Catbird), as well as a colt by champion first-season sire Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) (Lot 173), who was purchased for $100,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale earlier this year.

“The Stay Inside is not overly big but neither is his sire, he’s been very popular but his size might hold him back a little,” Jeffs said. “But he is a lovely horse. The Ole Kirk is lovely, and the sire is the flavour of the month.”

Jeffs said the horses in training sale remains an important outlet for pinhookers, providing a platform to showcase the yearlings they’ve selected and developed specifically for this market.

He said: “It is a pinhookers market because the pinhookers go out and select the ones they really think ‘oh, he’ll be alright’ [for the breeze up sales], some of the others, maybe they couldn't get into another sale, but it is a pinhooker’s sale.”

Echoing that sentiment, Glen X Lodge’s Ash Glencross said the sale continues to serve as an important outlet for pinhookers and middle-market buyers alike.

A top-five vendor at last year’s edition, Glencross has brought a more compact draft to this year’s sale, aimed squarely at the strong, value-driven segment that underpins the market.

“I’m reasonably confident, this sale is very much a middle market sale and most of our clients have prepared in a way that they’ve brought the right sorts of horses that will fit this sale, and that’s the most important – knowing your clientele, knowing who’s coming to purchase and trying to provide that for them,” Glencross told ANZ.

“The draft this year is probably a bit different, the last few years I’ve had quite a large draft. To be honest, I was trying to produce horses that would create more interest for the Hong Kong market, so I was looking for some higher-end two-year-olds to present.

“I struggled to get my hands on those personally as a buyer, as you have the traders that have been doing it a long time and have a better market who were beating me to it. So my draft this year is probably more fitting for the general market, the Chinese market, Malaysia and Korea – they’re here looking at a few horses.”

Glencross said she would like to see stronger engagement from domestic buyers, believing the international market is less likely to overlook the potential of slower-maturing horses who didn’t capture attention as yearlings.

“I think the problem is sometimes the domestic market sees these horses younger when they haven’t quite blossomed and they write them off a bit,” she said. “It would be good to see the domestic interest grow and know that there are vendors like myself who are buying horses to produce, and come back and give those horses they maybe weren’t interested in as a yearling a second chance.”

A standout for Glen X is Lot 3, a colt by Widden Stud’s Gold Standard (Sebring) out of winning I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mare La Isla Bonita.

“He was purchased as a baby online and the owner got him for an absolute steal [$2,500],” Glencross said.

“We broke him in earlier in the year and he’s just blossomed with every preparation. He’s very much a ready made racehorse. He breezed up 10.35 seconds very easy and was constantly improving throughout his breeze.

“I thought he was the smokey horse coming into it but no, he’s very much been recognised. He has paraded very well and his temperament is exceptional so it’ll be very interesting to see how he does tomorrow.”

Also among Glen X Lodge’s offerings is Lot 191, an Anders (Not A Single Doubt) filly out of Rose Of Traveston (Show A Heart), a winning sister to Group 2 winner Vo Heart.

The filly is one of 11 horses catalogued this year as part of the sale’s growing three-year-old section, introduced in 2024 to broaden its appeal.

“The three-year-old I have is a stable favourite, she’s an exceptional filly. She’s ready to go and I think will thrive anywhere she goes,” Glencross said.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told ANZ that the 2025 catalogue reflected the strong level of planning and intent from vendors.

“From a catalogue perspective we worked hard to ensure our pinhookers got a really good crack at the yearling market this year and when we got to the breeze ups, I thought they were a really good line of breeze ups,” he said.

“Now we’ve had a good look, we’ve seen a lot of nice, well-conformed horses here that have been earmarked for this sale from the time they were purchased. From what I can gather on the ground, people are finding horses they like that have had all the education they need to be able to go to the races.

“Whether you’re here or abroad there’s a massive opportunity to be able to purchase at a value number.”

Bowditch said the three-year-old section had quickly found its place in the catalogue, appealing to both local and international buyers seeking immediate track prospects.

“This is our second year doing the three-year-old section, we’ve got some horses that are further along the line, really educated and the time is now for them to run,” he said. “We know from an international perspective, they like that, so we suspect there will be a good market there for them.

“Westbury Stud have a good line of older horses being sold from New Zealand, some of them have had some great updates since the catalogue was printed. That’s just a new dimension, something Gerry Harvey and Luke McDonald came up with and we’re giving it a go. Hopefully the internationals that are here will pay attention to them as horses that are winning and competing right now. That’s just another facet to the sale we thought was well worth trying.”

He acknowledged that international participation, particularly from Asia, remains a key driver of the sale, with buyers valuing Australia’s education system and transparency. The strength of recent northern hemisphere markets, he added, has also set an encouraging tone heading into Thursday’s auction.

“It aligns itself very well with Asia and they play a significant role,” Bowditch said. “There’s a lot more to see before they buy the horse. From a domestic perspective, I think there will be good participation but I think the international market will be the strongest part.

“It’s our first two-year-old sale of the year in this part of the world and we’re looking at the sales in the north and it’s been an incredible year up there thus far,” he said. “You hope that it all aligns and the confidence we’re seeing abroad continues.

“We're coming off a very solid yearling sale series in our own right, so the industry here – prize-money is strong, the racing’s getting stronger week on week during the Spring Carnival – it’s an exciting time. There’s no better country and no better time to get involved in this great sport.”

Enriched shares dominate October (Early) Sale

Enriched (Credit: Racing Photos)

Three individual shares in the Group 2-winning entire Enriched (I Am Invincible) sold for a combined $440,000 in a highly successful Inglis Digital October (Early) Online Sale today.

Walnut Farm – an affiliate of powerhouse Yulong - capitalised on the rare opportunity to purchase each share – one ten per cent and two five per cent - in the regally bred Enriched, who is by Champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) out of a half-sister to Winx (Street Cry) in Miss Atom Bomb (Enosta De Lago).

The ten per cent share sold for a sale-high $215,000 while the five per cent shares realised $115,000 and $110,000 respectively, valuing the horse at $2.2 million.

Michael Freedman – who trains Enriched – was thrilled to welcome Yulong back into his stable.

“Funny enough they gave me a horse only last week to train and now they’ve come along and bought these shares today so it’s great to have that support of Mr Zhang and the Yulong team,’’ Freedman said.

“Enriched is by a Champion stallion from the family of the best mare that’s ever raced here so he’s certainly got the pedigree in the back pocket and he’s already a Group 2 winner.

“Hopefully now we can set him up for a future at stud down the track.’’

Yulong’s Sam Fairgray concurred.

“Ultimately that’s the long-term play, that Enriched will be on the Yulong stallion roster down the track but there’s plenty of options for him either way,’’ Fairgray said.

“His pedigree and record already are there for everyone to see and Michael Freedman is an outstanding trainer so we’re excited to see where Enriched might end up.’’

Enriched will be looking to join Baraqiel (Snitzel), Light Infantry Man (Fast Company), Private Harry (Harry Angel), Benedetta (Hellbent), Port Lockroy (Better Than Ready) and most recently Charm Stone (I Am Invincible), as subsequent Group 1 winners that have had shares offered through Inglis Digital.

Wednesday’s second-top lot was the Newgate Farm-offered three-year-old colt Tuscany (Zoustar), which sold to Red Bloodstock for $210,000.

“We’re really pleased with the price for him,’’ Newgate’s Henry Field said.

“He’d come to the end of his time as far as the Newgate Colts Partnership was concerned but he’s a quality horse and we wish his new owners all the best with him.’’

Other six figure results in the sale included Running By (Impending) ($200,000) and Tetsu Belle (Deep Field) ($110,000), to bring to 111 the number of six figure sales through Inglis Digital so far in 2025.

In total the October (Early) Online Sale grossed $2,596,000.

Entries are now open for the October (Late) Sale and will remain open until midnight next Wednesday, October 15.

Waller weighs up small-field challenge with Buckaroo

Chris Waller will saddle Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) in another small field when the gelding lines up in Saturday’s Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield, but the champion trainer admits he’s no fan of such contests. Buckaroo is one of just five acceptors for the $1 million feature, joining Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express), Light Infantry Man, Globe (Charm Spirit) and Hezashocka (Shocking). Light Infantry Man is also dual-nominated for the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill, with a decision on his destination to come in the next few days. “Less to beat,” Waller said of the main positive to small fields. “[But] I don’t like no pace in any race – I’m a big fan of pacemakers, if they brought them in. It makes it easier for the punters [and] everyone to predict. Less pace [more] unpredictable, so it wouldn’t suit him.” Buckaroo goes into Saturday’s contest third-up after finishing second in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and third in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m), form that was boosted when Underwood winner Sir Delius (Frankel) took out last weekend’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). “Second-up was awesome and third-up he should be ready to peak,” Waller said. A decision on whether Buckaroo proceeds to the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) or waits for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) will be made after Saturday’s race.

Damask Rose chasing first Group 1 in Toorak

Damask Rose (Savabeel) may have earned more than $2.2 million in prize-money, but a Group 1 victory still eludes her, and trainer Mark Walker is hoping to change that when she lines up in Saturday’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield. The four-year-old enjoyed a lucrative three-year-old season in New Zealand, winning the $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) and the inaugural $3.5 million NZB Kiwi (1500m), earning just over $2 million in a matter of weeks. Her NZB Kiwi win also secured her a guaranteed spot in next month’s million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick, but Group targets in Melbourne remain a priority. From Te Akau’s Cranbourne base, Damask Rose finished fifth first-up in the Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in August before stepping up to elite-level with a seventh in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last month. “She has got a really good profile third-up heading into the mile, so we have copied that from her programme at home when she won the slot race [NZB Kiwi],” Te Akau assistant trainer Ben Gleeson. “She was okay second-up. Her second-up form is not great, and we knew that. She made a long-sustained run on a very firm surface. She probably doesn’t appreciate it too firm and it was rock hard that day. I would love for the track on Saturday to hold a Good4, but she certainly gets a good chance.” Gleeson was impressed with her latest work at Cranbourne and is excited to see her step out under jockey Jamie Melham. “She galloped on the course proper at Cranbourne [on Tuesday] and worked terrific,” he said. “She looks amazing in the coat. I don’t think we will see a horse look better than her on Saturday. Third-up, she ticks all the boxes. She is still down in the weights, which is great, and we have got Jamie Melham onboard, which is a big tick.”

Price pair out to cause Guineas upset

Chris Waller may hold the top two fancies for Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), but co-trainer Mick Price is not conceding defeat, confident his runners Space Rider (Deep Field) and Planet Red (Admire Mars) are peaking at the right time. Price, who famously trained $101 outsider Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt) to win the 2017 edition, said both his colts have had the right preparation to test leading chances Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) and Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) from the Waller stable. “I have no complaints about their training, but you have to come here on the day and have a bit of luck,” Price said. “You can only have them right for the day and I think both of mine are right. They have both had preps for the mile. Mighty Boss came here and was $101, so it can be that type of race.” Planet Red finished third in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) on September 20, one place ahead of stablemate Space Rider, who rebounded from a below-par effort at Moonee Valley the start prior. “If you give Planet Red some sort of each-way chance, then you give Space Rider some sort of each-way chance,” Price said. “I worked them together on Saturday on the grass and I thought they were perfect. Planet Red looks beautiful, and Space Rider looks good too. Planet Red is the uncomplicated gelding, and they hold form if they are physically right, while colts [which Space Rider is] on the day can get a bit distracted.”

Giga Kick set for Caulfield return

Giga Kick (Credit: Racing Photos)

Clayton Douglas’ star sprinter Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) will make his return at Caulfield this Saturday, when the six-year-old lines up in the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m), the start of a potential four-race spring campaign. In two of the past three years, Douglas and Giga Kick have been in Sydney preparing for The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), which the gelding won in 2022 and finished second in last year’s edition, while injury prevented him defending his title in 2023. “Normally he would kick off earlier in the spring but we're a bit later this time,” Douglas said. “He's had the one trial leading into Saturday, but he's forward enough to be running really well. His racing pattern is that he will get off the speed and there looks like there will be good speed in the race and hopefully they overdo it up front and he can hit the line hard.” Without an Everest campaign this year, Douglas said Giga Kick’s program can be extended later into the spring, with the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at The Valley on Cox Plate Day, the Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, and the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield all possible targets.

Gringotts back in action in Alan Brown Stakes

Ciaron Maher is hopeful Gringotts (Per Incanto) can get his spring campaign back on track when he lines up in Saturday’s Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill after a series of setbacks. The Group 1 winner was scratched from both the 7 Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) due to poor blood readings, with Maher confirming a mild virus was to blame. “There are a lot of viruses around this year and it was just unfortunate that he got one,” Maher said. “But he seems good now. You never really know where you’re at with that sort of thing but it should be a nice race for him to kick off. He could even end up in the Big Dance.” Originally targeting next week’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), Gringotts will instead be rerouted towards the Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick on Melbourne Cup day.

Wakeful or Guineas next for Mating Call

A choice between the Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) awaits the Oopy MacGillivray and Dan Clarken-trained Mating Call (Brazen Beau) following her impressive performance in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington. The lightly-raced filly, a debut winner at Balaklava before a luckless run in the Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) last week, backed up strongly to finish close-up behind Getta Good Feeling (So You Think) and Just A Journey (Justify) on Saturday. “Really, really exciting, just to see a filly with such little experience handle the day as she has,” MacGillivray told Racing.com. “Probably that experience is what cost her getting a little bit closer, but she’s done a fabulous job.” Jockey Jamie Mott was also full of praise for the three-year-old, indicating she is now looking for further ground, a factor that could sway the stable’s next move. “She said again that she was just lovely behind the gates, did everything right. She took a little bit of time to settle,” MacGillivray said. “If she ever draws a gate inside eight, that will make that a lot easier, but she [Mott] had nothing but praise for the filly. “Jamie did say she probably needs further… whether we change our plans and head towards maybe a Wakeful? Who knows. But we’ll get her home and make sure she’s ok. She’d probably even prefer a Soft 6 – it’s a beautiful day today, so if we got some of that wet spring they’ve been talking about, I’ll be happy.”

Marhoona to target Coolmore

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Marhoona (Snitzel) will make her second spring appearance in Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill. The Michael Freedman-trained filly resumed with a gritty win in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) last month and is being aimed at the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington. “The Roman Consul and then ideally, if she is in form, we go to Melbourne for the Coolmore,” Freedman said. “She has come through her first-up run really well. She was a little bit ring rusty the other day but she has definitely lit up since then.”

Pier to skip Cox Plate and target King Charles III Stakes

New Zealand Group 1 winner Pier (Proisir) will bypass this year’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and will instead head to Sydney to tackle the King Charles III Stakes (Gr , 1600m) at Randwick on October 18. After a strong Queensland campaign over the winter, Pier was aimed at the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and finished fifth behind hot-favourite Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) last Saturday. “His effort was better than it looked, it wasn’t a bad run by any means,” co-trainer Darryn Weatherley said. “The occasion got to him a little bit… he was very agitated, saddling up. Ethan rode him beautifully, but he did ride him a little bit to take the edge off the favourite early… We got a nice enough paycheck for that being such a prestigious race.” Pier was a late entry for the Cox Plate, but the Weatherleys and co-owner Ozzie Kheir chose to withdraw him in favour of the King Charles III Stakes. “I just feel another mile will be more suitable than going the 2040 metres at Moonee Valley, and he’s also stabled in Sydney at the present time, so it would be a big trip to go into a high pressure race,” Weatherley said. “I feel the run has improved him so his next run will be in the King Charles… I’ve never seen him look so good and had him feel so good. I just hope next Saturday week that with his freshness taken off him, his manners are a bit better and he can be competitive. If he gets some of the chocolates in a $5 million race, it’s certainly well worth being there.” Pier is currently rated a $15 chance in the King Charles market, behind Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) ($3.50) and Fangirl (Sebring) ($3.60).

Pictor set for Autumn after Kensington win

Chris Waller was quick to make amends after running Pictor (Written Tycoon) over 1100-metres first-up at Canterbury, stepping the colt straight to 1400-metres for Wednesday's The Agency Real Estate Plate at Kensington and he rewarded the trainer’s decision with an impressive win. "The key was the trip," Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. "We probably got it wrong last start. He was dual accepted and we went for the wrong option. We learned our lesson there and made amends today." Having just his third start, Pictor let down nicely for James McDonald to score by a 0.56 lengths over stablemate Panova (Trapeze Artist), with Emballee (Pierro) completing a stable trifecta another 0.71 lengths away in third. While it was a midweek race, Duckworth said it did not reflect their opinion of the colt, who was initially considered a Caulfield Guineas prospect before a minor setback. "He's a bit behind the others but off his work at home we thought he was going to end up being on a Guineas path this preparation," Duckworth said. "He had a very minor issue which set him back ten days of work. Nothing that is going to prevent him going onwards and upwards and I imagine he'll be seen at a higher level through the autumn. It's just two weeks too late which is a real shame but he is actually a really good colt."

Cunninghams to sell Hunter Valley’s Ridgmont Farm

The Cunningham family will sell their Hunter Valley stud, Ridgmont Farm, as part of a restructure of their breeding and racing operations, while remaining active in the industry. The move affects 15 staff and is expected to take effect by year’s end. Owned by Mitch Cunningham, Ridgmont has been home to top-level performers including Group 1 winner Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) and now Coolmore Stud stallion Storm Boy (Justify). Broodmares, foals, and yearlings will move to Newgate Farm, which will also sell Ridgmont-owned yearlings at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, with some stock going to Yarraman Park. Donovan & Co will manage the sale, highlighting the property’s prime location in the Segenhoe Valley ‘Golden Triangle’ and its turnkey infrastructure. The Cunninghams plan to support staff through the transition and continue expanding their racing and breeding interests.

Onesmoothoperator gears up for second Cup tilt

The 2024 Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) is in Australia for another Melbourne Cup tilt, with trainer Brian Ellison planning the return journey almost as soon as he left the country last November. The eight-year-old had a tough run in last year's Cup, finishing five lengths off Knight's Choice (Extreme Choice) in 12th, but North Yorkshire-based Ellison said another trip south has been front of mind in the 11 months since. "It has been the plan since last year. His owners had a great experience with him winning the Geelong Cup," Ellison told Great British Racing International. "He ran well enough in the Melbourne Cup to pick up prizemoney to cover the expenses, so it was always on the cards to come back again." Onesmoothoperator had a quiet summer in Britain, racing just three times without much success, but Ellison expects him to turn his form around in Australia, just as he did last year. Crucially, the gelding has come through his international journey in fine condition and Ellison said the plan will once again be to gain a Cup start via the Geelong Cup, though he could end up getting a run anyway. "He travelled over great and has settled in really well again. He didn't lose any weight on the journey and is fresh and well," Ellison said. "We've moved up to 28 on the list for the Melbourne Cup, which is much better than we were at this stage last year, but a win in Geelong is a golden ticket. It probably means it will be a tougher race this year and we may get in at the next stage without it, but we will still give him a prep run first and all being well go to Flemington after that.”

With A Vengeance impresses with stylish Avondale debut

With A Vengeance (Exceed And Excel) made a winning start to his career in the Tulloch Cafe 2YO (1000m) at Avondale on Wednesday. Having impressed in two trials at Te Rapa and Ellerslie, the Te Akau Racing colt carried that form into his first race. Ridden by Craig Grylls, With A Vengeance travelled well just off the pace before quickening to win comfortably by a length. “He was very professional, a lovely colt, and a beautiful type,” Grylls said. “He bounced away and put himself right there, wanted to lay out around the home turn a bit but once he straightened up, he put them away quite nicely. He’s a really beautiful colt and got a good action, so I think when he gets on top of the ground he’ll lengthen nicely too. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does in the future.” Trainer Mark Walker said the performance was a pleasing debut for the well-bred colt, purchased by David Ellis for $240,000 from Widden Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. “He’s been really well educated and it was good to see him win first-up,” Walker said. “He did everything right and at the 200 metres he shifted into another gear to win nicely. It was really pleasing to see and exciting for the owners to see him do that on debut… We’ll probably give him a little break now and head towards the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on 22 November at Pukekohe.”

Riccarton path to be confirmed for talented Electron

Sam Mynott has her sights set on the New Zealand Cup carnival with Electron (Turn Me Loose), but where the gifted mare takes her first steps toward Riccarton is yet to be locked in. The Cambridge trainer’s preference is to kick off in Saturday’s Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Otaki if there is any improvement in track conditions, currently rated a Heavy 10. Plan B is for multiple Group 3 placegetter Electron to resume closer to home a day before in the Placemakers Taupo Handicap (1300m). “Ideally, she will go to Otaki, but we will see if the sun comes out for us or not and I’ll wait until Thursday afternoon to make that call,” Mynott said. “I am really happy with her and that’s why I don’t want to give her a gut buster first-up, there’s a long season ahead.” Electron has posted two wins and a placing from four first-up appearances and has again worked well ahead of her return without going to the trials. “She’s a bit funny in the barriers and I keep her away from them as much as I can,” Mynott said. “I’ve taken her off the property out to the Windsor Park track and given her some good gallops there. She’s pretty fit but will improve with a run regardless.”

Kygo Star shines late in competitive contest

Promising three-year-old Kygo Star (Wootton Bassett) overcame a wide journey to come out on top in a tight finish in the Allspark Electrical Maiden 3YO (1400m) at Avondale on Wednesday. The Chad Ormsby-trained gelding was impressive on debut at Taupo, storming home late to finish second behind Oratia Beauty. Finishing third in that contest was Magic Carpet (Satono Aladdin), who came out ten days later to win the Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa. Showing tenacity in the final bounds, Kygo Star lifted off the canvas to hit the front right on the line, pipping Miss Parker (Circus Maximus) by 0.1 lengths, with Shoma (Contributer) less than a length back in third. Mitchell had been on board in his first raceday outing and saw plenty of improvement in the son of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj). “He’s a really lovely horse, I really like him,” she said. “It probably didn’t go to plan, I was three-wide but they’ve been quite messy races today and I didn’t have any interference, so it was pretty good. I think he learned a lot from Taupo, he was a bit green coming around the corner there and letting down, but he definitely let down today.”

27 for Lucky Vega

The Jessica Harrington-trained Kindergarten (2 f ex Maria Montessori by Galileo) made a winning debut in a six-furling contest at Navan on Wednesday and in the process became the 27th individual winner for Yulong Stud shuttler Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega). The two-year-old filly beat Ocean's Breath (Bated Breath) by three-quarters of a length with the same distance back to Anushka (Invincible Spirit) in third. Kindergarten is out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and she is out of Group 3 winner Lesson In Humility (Mujadil), who is also the dam of Group 3 winner and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runner-up Tiger Moth (Galileo) and Group 2 scorer Coach House (Oasis Dream). Lucky Vega is standing for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST), up from the $16,500 (inc GST) he stood for in 2024.

Godolphin and Amo Racing clash over 3,700,000gns son of Sea The Stars

Godolphin, with Sheikh Mohammed at the centre of the huddle, squared up against Amo Racing as a well-related son of Sea The Stars fetched 3,700,000gns midway through the opening session of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Amo principal Kia Joorabchian was back in his usual position opposite the rostrum, while Sheikh Mohammed and his advisors were stationed outside by the parade ring. Godolphin talent scout Anthony Stroud issued the final 200,000gns increase that moved the colt to the head of the Book 1 market.

“Don’t walk away from me,” implored auctioneer John O’Kelly as Joorabchian paced about the bidders’ area. But when the Amo Racing man declined to take the bait, the hammer fell on the day’s third millionaire offering, out of five by the close of play.

The colt became not only the most expensive yearling of 2025 but the most expensive ever sired by Sea The Stars. The youngster is also the joint-fifth most expensive lot to change hands in Book 1 history. The roll of honour is headed by the 5,000,000gns Galileo filly Al Naamah, who went the way of Al Shaqab Racing in 2013.

“He’s exceptionally good-looking and from a very good stud farm,” Stroud said after signing for the Longview Stud-consigned youngster. “He’s by Sea The Stars, it’s a very good Rothschild family and he was majestic in the way he moved. He’s an extremely lovely horse. Obviously the family works well with Sea The Stars, he’s an unbelievable stallion. He really stood out to us among the horses here.”

The colt is a sibling to three winners, including his Listed-placed half-sister Crystal Caprice and his two-time winning brother Crystal Mariner. The seven-figure youngster is the sixth foal out of Crystal Zvezda, a Listed-winning homebred for Sir Evelyn De Rothschild.

In turn, the dam is out of Crystal Star, making her a sibling to five winners. These include champion older horse Crystal Ocean, whose finest hour came when getting the better of Magical and Waldgeist to win the Prince of Wales's Stakes. Crystal Ocean is closely related to this colt, with both being by Sea The Stars. Crystal Ocean and Crystal Zvezda are also siblings to three-time Group 2 scorer Crystal Capella and Pattison Canadian International victor Hillstar.

On the price tag, Stroud said: “You have to pay for the ones you really want, and he’s the one we really wanted, without doubt. Valuations are difficult and you always have to pay more than you feel because you want the horse. Godolphin have supported the sale hugely, and it’s only the first day. There’s still two days to go.”

The colt was bred under the Ed's Stud banner after Crystal Zvezda changed hands during the dispersal of stock from De Rothschild’s Southcourt Stud in 2022. Stroud Coleman Bloodstock signed the ticket on that occasion at 775,000gns. The colt is bred on the Sea The Stars-Dubawi cross responsible for six stakes winners, including Group 2 scorers Map Of Stars and See The Fire.

Godolphin were back into seven-figure territory just five lots later when bidding a round 1,000,000gns for the Too Darn Hot colt out of Dane Street from Airlie Stud. The youngster is a sibling to six winners, most notably Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Skitter Scatter, who also has a Sea The Stars filly entered in Book 1 as Lot 424 on Thursday.

Godolphin are already involved in this family as they raced the Listed-winning three-parts brother Victory Dance, while Juddmonte own the Fortune Stakes-winning half-sister Skellet.

There is plenty of top-level form high up on the page as another half-sister, Data Dependent, is the dam of Belmont Oaks heroine Aspen Grove. Consent, who appears beneath the second dam, won the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu for Sir Mark Prescott at Longchamp on Sunday.

“It’s a great price and I wish Godolphin all the best with him,” said Airlie’s Anthony Rogers. “He’s a lovely horse, he’s a racehorse. You don’t want to believe you’re going to get a million. He had a good update and we’re delighted with the result, but if I start coming to a sale saying ‘I think I’m going to get a million’ then you’re a bit bloody crazy! She’s been an unbelievable mare. We failed to sell her here about 15 years ago. That was quite good!”

Godolphin returned to a source of past success when bidding 1,000,000gns for a well-related son of Blue Point earlier in the day. The colt was presented by James Hanly’s Ballyhimikin Stud, the same outfit that sold Prince of Wales's Stakes and Juddmonte International hero Ombudsman to Sheikh Mohammed three years ago.

The Blue Point colt is out of Boston Rocker, making him a sibling to Group 2 winner San Donato and this year’s Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Rock On Thunder.

“He’s a super horse, he never turned a hair all week,” said Hanly, who bred the colt in partnership with Stroud and the late Lady O’Reilly’s Skymarc Farm. “He travelled very well, he settled in well here, he showed so many times. A week ago he was out in a field without a rug covered in mud! We like to keep them out as much as possible.”

Those purchases helped Godolphin go well clear on the leading buyers’ table, their 9.3 million guineas on ten yearlings more than double the amount invested by the day’s second-biggest buyer, with Amo Racing picking up three new signings for a combined 4.6 million guineas.

Amo Racing outmuscle Coolmore for 3,600,000gns Frankel colt

It took all of 40 minutes for Amo Racing and Coolmore to lock horns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The result of a protracted round of bidding saw a Frankel brother to last year’s top lot bring the gavel down at a cool 3.6 million guineas.

Whereas Kia Joorabchian stood front and centre of the bidders’ area opposite the rostrum last year, this time the Amo Racing principal delivered his bids while pacing back and forth in front of the spotter’s podium by the parade ring. Just in front of the Amo Racing huddle stood the Coolmore camp, with MV Magnier joined by the likes of Paul Shanahan, Peter Brant and Georg von Opel.

After the price vaulted up in 200,000gns increments it was Joorabchian who struck a bid of three million guineas with another determined nod of the head. Magnier took his time to respond before mouthing “one” in the direction of bid spotter Shirley Anderson-Jolag.

Five more 100,000gns raises were exchanged before, as was so often the case 12 months ago, Joorabchian had the final say. Magnier debated countering again but received a decisive shake of the head from Brant.

The Amo Racing team know plenty about the pedigree as they paid 4.4 million guineas for this colt’s sister, subsequently named Partying and sent into training with Kevin Philippart de Foy, on the same day in 2024.

“The boys loved him, we have a lot of people around us who really liked him, and we couldn’t really let him go,” said Joorabchian. “We want to keep the family tight and see how it works out. Obviously if he’s a very good horse he’s going to be a stallion, and if he’s not, he’s not going to be a stallion.”

Asked if the seven-figure colt would join his sister at Freemason Lodge Stables, where Philippart de Foy oversees the Amo Racing string, Joorabchian said: “Yeah, probably, although we haven’t decided that yet. Partying is at Freemason. Obviously we like her otherwise we wouldn’t have gone for the brother!

“Who knows though, she still hasn’t run, although this is a completely different project. If the filly doesn’t run she’s still got a huge residual value. She can be a broodmare, and we have five stallions, so that’s important. But if he doesn’t go, it’s a completely different kettle of fish.”

He added: “I thought we paid a little bit more than we expected but then we’re up against Coolmore. They make it five versus one! It’s an early strike, hopefully there’s no more.”

The Frankel colt is the third foal out of Aljazzi, whose five career victories were capped by a wide-margin score in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. The daughter of Shamardal joined the Newsells Park Stud broodmare band at the end of 2018 when she sold for one million guineas at the Autumn Horses in Training Sale, a record price for the auction at the time.

That seven-figure investment has been made to look money exceptionally well spent as her offspring have now generated 8,750,000gns in Book 1 receipts.

“When I did the budget in December last year I put a valuation of half a million on him because I think some of these big, raw Frankels can still make that, even if they’re just legs," said Newsells Park's general manager Julian Dollar. "He really came together through the year, especially during prep. I suppose coming in here I thought there was a chance he might make seven figures, a bit like I felt with the sister last year. When you get two big-hitters locking horns, there’s always a chance they can make unbelievable amounts, which that really was.”

Asked if that result alleviated any pressure ahead of an important three days, Dollar said: "Yes, a lot! This really helps. These horses we’re producing here, they’re expensive to breed. The nominations are expensive and we’re very fortunate that we sometimes get rewarded. They're expensive though, and sometimes the harvest doesn’t go as well as you’d hope. That was a nice start.”

Although Joorabchian joked that he hoped the Frankel colt would be Amo Racing’s only signing of the day, two more recruits were made later in the session.

A Lope De Vega filly out of a half-sister to Group 1-winning siblings Forever Together and Together Forever, the latter the dam of City Of Troy, brought 550,000gns when offered by Ballylinch Stud. Another Frankel colt, out of the classy Bocca Baciata, cost 450,000gns when presented by The Castlebridge Consignment, taking Amo’s day one spend to 4,600,000gns.

It's In The Blood

McGaw (Credit: Racing Photos)

@ANZ_News

You mightn’t guess it from his pricetag, but Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner McGaw (I Am Immortal) hails from a pedigree boasting plenty of blue blood, with strong notes of a particularly regal European family.

The first stakes winner created by an entity named Havaparty - the breeding wing (and nickname) of the like-sounding David Azzopardi of Dream Thoroughbreds - McGaw is the son of a mare Azzopardi bought for $16,000 in Niki Piki Milo (Librettist).

And even then the breeder couldn’t turn a profit when McGaw went to last year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, selling from Stonehouse Thoroughbreds’ draft for $14,000 to trainers David and Emma-Lee Browne - which was $6,000 short of his reserve.

But the gelding’s pedigree suggested he’d have a good start in life.

Dream Thoroughbreds raced the sire, I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible), and when they sold him to Victoria’s Swettenham Stud, Azzopardi retained a small share and decided to enter into breeding.

At the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2020, Swettenham conducted research - via G1 Goldmine - into appropriate mares for I Am Immortal. Niki Piki Milo, a Listed winner in New Zealand, came up as a recommendation, and the mare is now responsible for one of that stallion’s two stakes winners.

We all want to repeat influential broodmares if we can, and catching the eye mostly in this mating is a 5f x 5f duplication of important mare Eljazzi (Artaius).

Irish-bred, Eljazzi was a foundation mare for the breeding empire of Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, he of the maroon with grey epaulettes carried with distinction by a host of quality thoroughbreds. They include dual Group 1 winners and subsequent sires Belardo (Lope De Vega), a former shuttler to New Zealand, and Make Believe (Makfi).

Most of all, they include Mishriff (Make Believe), who won three Group 1s and the world’s richest race, the Saudi Cup (1800m) in 2021, a year before it attained top-tier status.

The John Gosden-trained Mishriff himself is a product of the Eljazzi family, with that mare being his fourth dam.

Purchased by Prince Faisal in 1982 for 92,000gns, the Henry Cecil-trained Eljazzi won on debut at Leicester by four lengths. She couldn’t win again in three more starts, but became a runaway success at stud.

Her first named foal Rafha (Kris) won five from seven, four in black type, including Chantilly’s Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m), or French Oaks, and was one of Eljazzi’s two stakes winners, alongside four stakes placegetters.

Rafha enjoyed outrageous success at stud. Four of her first nine runners were stakes winners, and three more were black-type placed.

McGaw (AUS)

3yo: (07Oct22 b g)

Trainer: Emma-Lee & David Browne

Owner: Sparta Racing Syndicate, G'Out Syndicate Et Al

Sire: I Am Immortal

Dam: Niki Piki Milo

Dam's Sire: Librettist

Breeder: Havaparty Investments Pty Lt

Most notable among these were the Group 1-winning Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) and the Group 3-placed Kodiac (Danehill). They have of course gone on to be super sires, the former with 154 stakes winners, the latter 103.

Rafha also threw the great blue hen Massarra (Danehill), who in Ireland left no fewer than six stakes winners include elite victor Nayarra (Cape Cross) and the Group 1-placed Gustav Klimt (Galileo).

It’s via Invincible Spirit that Eljazzi comes into McGaw’s top-half, nice and strong since Invincible Spirit is McGaw’s third sire.

At the bottom, Eljazzi’s influence is even more powerful, undiluted as she’s McGaw’s fifth dam.

Eljazzi was imported to Australia in 2002, aged 22. That’s not why she feeds into McGaw, but she did become a success here as well.

She threw only two foals here before dying in 2005, but one was Al Anood (Danehill), dam of three stakes victors headed by dual Group 1 hero Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry), now the sire of 18 stakes winners topped by Bella Nipotina, Dubai Honour, and Pride Of Jenni.

While still in Ireland, Eljazzi threw McGaw’s fourth dam Fayfa (Slip Anchor), who was Listed-placed and also came to Australia to throw Listed winner Hillfa (Danehill) and her city-winning full-sister Doduo (Danehill), McGaw’s third dam.

I Am Immortal (Credit: swettenham stud)

Doduo was a three-quarter sister to Massarra, Kodiac and Al Anood, and bore the dams of MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Shuffle Dancer (I Am Invincible) and New Zealand Group 2 and Group 3 victor Contessa Vanessa (Bullbars) - who has renown as one of only three stakes winners by the obscure sire of Mr Brightside.

Dudou’s daughter Joiya (Stravinsky) was a city winner in New Zealand and bore Niki Piki Milo and three stakes placegetters, including the Group 1-placed Bella Gioia and Bella Mente.

Azzopardi put Niki Piki Milo to I Am Immortal for three straight years, yielding the Dream Thoroughbreds-retained I Am Piki, who’s won two from 11 so far, McGaw, and a filly bought at Premier this year by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

Her price was $160,000, and Busuttin and Young’s fellow Kiwi expats David and Emma-Lee Browne were under-bidders, at $150,000. That’s a fair bit more than the $14,000 they’d paid for McGaw from Book 2 at the same sale a year earlier, hinting at the quality they’d seen from him.

McGaw had debuted by then, with a 3.5 length win in an 1100-metre Pakenham maiden. Two weeks after that sale, he followed with victory at start number two in the $1 million Vobis Showdown (1200m).

Second place went to Befuddle (Hanseatic). Raced by Dream Thoroughbreds, and co-bred by Azzopardi - who also has a small share in Rosemont Stud’s Hanseatic - she’s now a Group 3-placed city winner from five starts, further boosting the portfolio of her novice breeder.

“We’ve only been breeding for three seasons,” Azzopardi, who has six mares, tells It’s In The Blood.

“I couldn’t have imagined how much success we’d have so early in the breeding game. I wasn’t expecting it, and I’m not kidding myself - I still know how hard it'll be to have more success - but to get that kind of success, it’s been a very exciting ride.

“To have bred the quinella in the Showdown was just wild. I wasn’t sure which one to cheer for.

“But McGaw has always shown ability from day one,” Azzopardi says of the three-year-old, now a $15 shot for the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on November 1.

“Watching him grow and fill into his frame has been great, and I think there’s a lot more to come. He’s still a bit of a long-legged baby, so as he matures further, he’ll keep improving.”

Azzopardi had budgeted for roughly double what he paid for Niki Piki Milo. She’d had just two runners, and one winner, from four foals at the time, but came up trumps on G1 Goldmine as a match for I Am Immortal.

“She was by Librettist, which probably wasn’t one of the most attractive of sirelines, but at $16,000 she was worth a gamble,” he said.

“As a yearling, McGaw was probably a bit big and leggy for a lot of buyers, and there wasn’t any real interest from anyone in him. But David and Emma-Lee, because they were New Zealanders, they knew Niki Piki Milo, and knew she was a good horse.

“We probably could have passed him in and raced him in Dream Thoroughbreds’ colours, but we wanted to get the stock of I Am Immortal into some good stables.”

I Am Immortal now has two stakes winners from 64 runners, at 3.1 per cent. That’s not bad among the six sons of I Am Invincible who’ve sired stakes winners so far - second behind Brazen Beau’s 4.6 per cent, and ahead of third-ranking Hellbent’s 2.4 per cent. For the record, the others are Kobayashi (1.8 per cent), Strasbourg (1.5 per cent) and Super One (0.9 per cent).

The other stakes winner for I Am Immortal is Phillip Stokes’s four-year-old gelding Athanatos. Out of an O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare, he’s shown stamina by winning Morphettville’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m), and is at $16 for Saturday’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), as another of those sneaky lightweight chances in major Caulfield handicaps for jockey Craig Williams.

While the Eljazzi family runs vibrantly in McGaw, he’s also powered by Danzig (Northern Dancer), at 5m, 4m x 3m, 5m, through four distinct sons. In the top-half, Danzig comes through fourth sire Green Desert and I Am Immortal’s damsire Ad Valorem. Down south, he’s the sire of Librettist, and of third dam Doduo’s sire Danehill.

The influential Nureyev is repeated at 5m x 4m via I Am Immortal’s second damsire Fasliyev, and Niki Piki Milo’s damsire Stravinsky.

Like Eljazzi, American broodmare Special (Forli) is another mare worth noting, at 6m, 8f x 5m, the first and last via Nureyev, and the middle through Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), I Am Immortal’s fourth damsire.

Natalma (Native Dancer) makes a strong nine appearances from the fifth to the eighth removes, with another great American mare Lalun (Djeddah) reinforcing the whole five times at 8m, 8m, 8m, 9m x 9m via Never Bend (four times) and Bold Reason.

The dominant sire is Hyperion (Gainsborough) with 19 mentions from columns seven through nine, ahead of 16 from Native Dancer (Polynesian), at six through nine.

Godolphin’s two stakes winners from Saturday come powered by some reliable pedigree tricks, one with a particularly royal blue hue.

The Joe Pride-trained three-year-old colt Attica (Lonhro), winner of Randwick’s Dulcify Stakes (Listed, 1600m), is the first foal of former outstanding Godolphin mare Savatiano (Street Cry).

Now 11, Savatiano won 12 times from 14 starts, with seven stakes wins including five Group 2s. She didn’t quite finish with an elite success, but was placed three times at the top level, including a 0.1-length second in the 2021 All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and a 1.3-length second in the 2020 Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m).

Exacerbating that pain, she was first across the line in the 2021 Canterbury Stakes, but was disqualified 12 months later - affecting connections but not punters - for a mysterious, unexplained positive swab to three banned steroidal substances.

Savatiano now has a two-year-old colt named Sabates (Palace Pier) in Ciaron Maher’s stable, and a yearling colt by I Am Invincible.

Attica is also boosted by that ever-reliable staple of pedigrees, a duplication of Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) at 4m x 4m, coming in strong as the sire of Lonhro’s damsire, and as Savatiano’s third sire.

Godolphin’s winner of Saturday’s Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington - the Team McEvoy-trained Options (Impending) - boasts that much coveted occurrence of having Northern Dancer full-brothers Fairy King and Sadler’s Wells on either side of the pedigree, and close enough in the fourth remove.

Fairy King is there as the sire of Impending’s damsire Encosta De Lago, while Sadler’s Wells is well placed as the third sire of Options’ mother Alternatively (New Approach).

Options also has a doubling of Mr. Prospector, at 5m x 5m.
