It was a selective day’s trade at the Magic Millions Horses in Training Sale on the Gold Coast on Thursday, but steady figures and robust international participation offered encouragement for the continued growth of Australia’s two-year-old breeze-up scene.

The auction was headlined by a $550,000 I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt, and as expected, Asian buyers underpinned the spend, in which a further six horses sold for $200,000 or more and another 16 changed hands for at least $100,000.

What's On

With 94 horses sold, the aggregate closed at $6.895 million, down just 3.8 per cent on last year’s sale, while the clearance rate was 68 per cent, up 2 per cent on 2024.

“I was satisfied with today, I think the right horse that walked in the ring, that breezed well and looked the part and vetted the part, there was good interest,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told ANZ News.

“We sold more horses for six figures than we did last year, the average is comparable to last year, the clearance rate is comparable and the gross is slightly down. All-in-all I’m satisfied.

“There was a good cross-section of buyers, the locals and the interstate buyers played their part and we had an increased number of horses sell to Hong Kong and good numbers to China and the Philippines. I’m pleased with the result and it gives us impetus to go out and find better product for next year.”

“I feel as if with a better product you can continue to grow the two-year-old market, it’s viable in this part of the world, it’s strengthening year-on-year and we’re hungry to ensure we’ve got a good footprint on it.”

The sale reinforced the value of early identification and hands-on development, with growing recognition for breeders and vendors who prepare their own stock specifically for the two-year-old market.

“If you're breeding good numbers and you can identify horses early in their life that you can break in and prepare through to a two-year-old sale, I think there’s huge merit in that,” Bowditch said.

“Obviously, we encourage pinhookers to get involved in the yearling and weanling markets and come along and buy horses to participate in the two-year-old sale, but in saying that the proof’s in the pudding, if you can earmark a horse early, I find that to be a successful way of going forward.”

Lamings fork out for I Am Invincible colt

Bevan and Richard Laming’s Laming Racing operation came out on top after a spirited bidding duel with Paul Shailer to secure one of the standout colts of the sale in Lot 113. The gavel eventually came down at $550,000.

The Baramul Stud-consigned son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) – who was passed in at the Magic Millions flagship yearling sale in January – is the first foal out of unraced Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Ballet De Joie, herself a sister to multiple Group 1-winning sire Russian Revolution and a half-sister to the dam of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible).

"He had a great pedigree," Richard Laming said of the colt, who breezed well on the Gold Coast when clocking 10.52s.

"He's a beautiful individual. He's got a stallion's pedigree to go with it. You've probably got to pay a bit more than you'd expect - but you've got to buy the ones you want."

"We've got on the front foot and already sold quite a bit of him. There's still a little bit left as you'd expect. A horse like him will sell himself.

"I looked at his breeze up and then as an individual you'd think he would get up and go. There's been good reports from the people who prepared him."

"We've had a bit of luck buying horses off Gerry [Harvey, Baramul Stud owner], so we'll keep supporting him as he supports us.”

Laming Racing had earlier parted with $200,000 for a Toronado (High Chaparral) colt (Lot 31) out of winning Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) mare Murkowski.

The day’s second-highest-priced lot was Lot 123, a colt by the ill-fated Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) out of winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Bit Of Cheek, who was sold by O’Gorman Racing Stables to Adelaide-based investor Wayne Ormond for $400,000.

Originally sourced for $160,000 from the Adelaide Yearling Sale, the well-related youngster is a half-brother to stakes winner Blondeau (I Am Invincible) as well as three other winners.

Magic Millions China representative Amy Feng finished the sale as the leading buyer, signing for 13 lots at a combined outlay of $1.4 million.

Her purchases were headlined by Lot 143, a Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt out of Group 1-winning mare Diademe (Savabeel), offered by Baramul Stud, which she secured for $360,000. The colt added further strength to Feng’s growing profile as a major international player at the sale.

Kenmore Lodge finish top vendor with multiple six-figure lots

Despite a testing market for vendors, Kellie and Cameron Bond’s Kenmore Lodge once again achieved a 100 per cent clearance rate with their 11-strong draft. The Wyreema-based operation grossed $1.62 million – with six horses selling for more than $100,000 – to finish as the sale’s leading vendor by average ($147,500).

Lot 108, a colt by Yulong Stud’s Pierata (Pierro) out of multiple winner Angel Dane (Zizou) clocked 10.16s at the breeze ups and was the star turn of their draft when selling to Michael Chang for $320,000.

Kenmore began their successful day when their speedy Written By (Written Tycoon) colt (Lot 43) out of winning Magic Albert (Zeditave) mare Now You See topped proceedings early in the afternoon, selling for $170,000 to Hong Kong-buyer Susanna Hui.

Herself out of a half-sister to two stakes winners, Now You See is the dam of winner He Goes Boom (Spirit Of Boom) and her Written By colt also impressed when running a time of 10.38s.

Not long after, the Bonds toppled their own benchmark with a colt by Written By’s Yulong-based sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia) sold to Amy Feng for $300,000. Consigned as Lot 84, the colt was another to show his precocity at the breeze-ups, covering the ground in a slick 10.14s.

The first foal out of the winning Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) mare True Moonlight, whose dam Moonlight Hussey is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Moonovermanhattan (Manhattan Rain), Lot 84 was bought for $200,000 by Wei Jiaoqi at Magic Millions’ flagship yearling sale in January.

Kenmore had also sold a Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) filly (Lot 80) to Amy Feng for $70,000 and a Wild Ruler (Snitzel) filly (Lot 27) to Bingson Tecson from the Philippines for $50,000.

Speaking to ANZ News earlier in the afternoon, Cameron Bond said: “To be fair, we were probably confident before the sale started because we had a really nice bunch of horses, possibly as nice a bunch of horses as we’ve had.

“We are really, really satisfied with the results we’ve got so far.”

Kenmore Lodge sold Tyzone, a Group 1 winner by Written Tycoon at the same sale in 2015, and Bond said that while it was hard to compare the two, the team were full of confidence that Lot 84 would yield a positive result.

“It’s really hard to line these horses up, he’s probably a bit of a different type to Tyzone but he’s definitely impressed all the riders with his attitude,” Bond said. “He’s really good in the feet, and the whole way through he’s been a nice horse and we were confident about him.

“Here’s hoping he can [go on to racetrack success], and here’s hoping all of them can go on to racetrack success.”

After those results, the Kenmore camp were duly positive about the rest of their draft set to sell, which included a colt by Newgate Farm’s exciting first-season sire Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), a colt by Eureka Stud sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), and the Pierata.

“I’m actually excited, I’ve got some really nice horses still to go,” Bond said. “The Stay Inside colt has been really popular – he’s a cracking horse, a really good specimen, a good advertisement for the stallion.

“The Pierata has given all the riders an amazing feel, and we’ve also got the Spirit Of Boom who was the fastest breeze up for two-year-olds in the sale [10.05s], so we really do have some quality animals still to come.”

The growing confidence was met with more fine results, with a son of Hellbent (I Am Invincible) selling to Hong Kong for $100,000 after being passed as a yearling online, before the Stay Inside, Pierata and Spirit Of Boom each made six-figure sums.

Lot 101 by Stay Inside out of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Zing proved popular during inspections and delivered on the promise when being knocked down to Matt Hoystead Racing for $300,000, quickly followed by the Pierata selling for $320,000 – the fourth highest price tag on the day.

The speedy Spirit Of Boom out of Flaunt (Drumbeats) was the last of the draft to go through the ring, bringing $150,000, and another going the way of Amy Feng.

“We’re over the moon to have a good sale in tough conditions,” Bond said later in the afternoon.

“The Spirit Of Boom is a beautiful colt and we’re very happy with the price he made. We hope our product can get out there and win some good races and keep the brand going.

“The Pierata never got a bad comment from a rider, everyone was really happy, he’s a great mover, good temperament and a beautiful horse.

“The Stay Inside, by one of probably the hottest stallions in the country at the moment, out of a really nice Zoustar mare, and he was maybe a little bit underdone – he didn’t have the time in work the others did – but he impressed us from day one.”

Few vendors have a record at the Horses in Training Sale as consistent as Kenmore Lodge, who topped the auction in 2010 when turning a $15,000 Gonski (Danehill) yearling into a $180,000 two-year-old, and in 2017 when a Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) colt sold for $320,000 after being passed in for $40,000 as a yearling.

Last year they prepared the $700,000 Justify (Scat Daddy) top lot, where they finished a top four vendor with another 100 per cent clearance rate.

Bond spoke to the team’s consistent results despite shifting market dynamics.

“We basically just do our best, we have other equine pursuits, we put our heart and soul into it and really have their racing future’s at our heart and that’s what we try to achieve – setting them up for a good career,” he said.

“It’s obviously a tough buyer’s market, everything is in favour of the buyers, but we have specifically targeted some of these horses at this sale because they are quality animals and it’s paid off.”

Treasurethe Moment to bounce back in Might And Power

Treasurethe Moment (Credit: Racing Photos)

Matt Laurie admits the small field for Saturday’s Might And Power (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield is not ideal for his star mare Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) as she continues her build-up towards the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). Only four horses will race in the $1 million feature, with Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) scratched on Thursday and will instead run in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill. “I would prefer to have a few more runners in the race, but it is what it is,” Laurie told SEN. “I guess it's going to be a similar sort of set-up to her last race. I'm guessing Globe takes up the running and we're trailing it with the others trailing us. It's different, that's for sure, and I'm hopeful it works out, and we can see her back at her best.” Treasurethe Moment, who won nine consecutive races before finishing second to Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 26, has rebounded well after a minor colic setback prior to that run. “I think there has been a lot of improvement,” Laurie said. “She's come on a lot and the equimetre that we have had on her in her last couple of gallops has confirmed that. Up to 2000 metres will be perfect for her and I guess they will put Buckaroo into the race early to make it a bit of a test. It's not the makeup we really wanted heading to the Cox Plate, but it's still a $1 million race with four horses in it, so it will be an interesting watch. Her work on Tuesday was very good, she seems to have pulled up good, and she seems in a good place.” Damian Lane, unbeaten in seven rides on the mare, will reunite with her on Saturday after missing the Feehan ride through suspension.

Lees hoping Rivellino can bounce back in Caulfield Guineas

Kris Lees is confident a better draw and a rise in trip can help Rivellino (Too Darn Hot) rediscover his best form in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The colt, who will be making his first Melbourne appearance, has drawn barrier three for the $3 million Classic, and Lees is unfazed by the fact Rivellino will race left-handed for the first time. “I've been a bit forgiving of his runs this time in,” Lees said. “He's been back in the field at Rosehill where it has been dominated by on-speed horses in all his runs this time. We've always wanted to get him to the mile, even last preparation, but he had a long prep and we pulled-up stumps after the Sires', but we're looking forward to the Guineas on Saturday.” Rivellino, a three-time winner as a juvenile and fourth in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) last season, was also fifth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) before being sent for a spell. Lees gave the colt a gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday to familiarise him with the track and was pleased with what he saw. “He's had a few gallops at home,” he said. “Once every couple of weeks on our course proper we go the Melbourne way just to give the track a rest, more than anything else.” Lees said the colt handled Caulfield comfortably, a track often regarded as tricky for visiting runners, and believes Craig Williams, who rides on Saturday, can help offset that challenge. “He's in good order, but we're under no illusions, he's got to find his best form,” Lees said. “He mixes his form out of the gates, but if he steps clean and can hold a spot, that will be to his advantage. Last start watching it live, it didn't look like they were going to break the track record, but they did. They found their spot and that's where they all finished. He had good closing sectionals but was never a threat.”

Maher to have Guineas trio

Ciaron Maher will have a trio of runners in Saturday's Caulfield Guineas, with West Of Swindon (Wootton Bassett), Navy Pilot (I Am Invincible) and Observer (Ghaiyyath) set to line-up in the 1600-metre Group 1. The former will head up Maher's team, having taken the same path as Maher's only winner of the Caulfield Guineas, Griff (Trapeze Artist), when successful two years ago. The son of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) landed the Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on his latest start last month, his first career stakes success, while Navy Pilot was a last-start winner of a 1400-metre handicap at Sandown-Hillside and Observer is a maiden winner from four outings to date. "You could build a case for the three of them. Of the three though you would lean to West Of Swindon as he has the exposed form on the board," Maher's assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told Racing.com. "He was really good in the Stutt. He's on the up and the mile will suit. The way the race panned out it definitely played into our favour. He ran very true and he's come on from it. Of the three, you'd say him as he has the exposed form on the board; it's a sense of timing for his late sire [Wooton Bassett].”

Pinstriped primed to peak in Toorak

Enver Jusufovic believes Pinstriped (Street Boss) is ready to hit peak fitness ahead of Saturday’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield. The gelding, who gave Jusufovic his first Group 1 victory in last year’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), will have his fourth run of the campaign as he looks to return to his best. “He's reaching peak fitness now and barriers haven't helped in his previous runs,” Jusufovic said. “But I'm really happy with the horse and he's drawn well to get a favourable run. He had a better run last time, but he still wasn't able to go when I would've liked and then he got checked by the Hayes runner [Arkansaw Kid] halfway up the straight and he is a horse that needs momentum and an unimpeded run. I was very happy with how he performed and I'm looking forward to Saturday.” After finishing seventh in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and last in the Memsie Stakes, Pinstriped produced an improved fifth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on September 20, his first start under jockey Jamie Mott, who retains the ride. While Pinstriped led in the Memsie, Jusufovic said that was against his natural pattern and expects barrier two to allow him to settle just off the speed. “He's not a leader, so we'll forget that run in the Memsie Stakes,” he said. “I wouldn't say he's over all his niggles, but he is well managed by the team and he's as well as I could have him. Jamie came down and galloped him on Tuesday, and his first word was 'brilliant'. He's just taken a few runs this time in to reach peak fitness which I think he's doing now.”

Lazzura chasing hat-trick of wins

Despite only five mares having won the Toorak Handicap in the past 47 years, Lazzura's (Snitzel) co-owner Riccardo Surace Jnr is confident that his four-year-old daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) can be a big player in this weekend's Group 1 contest. The Chris Waller-trained mare has five wins and three placings from 12 starts to date, including winning both starts so far this campaign in the Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) and Let's Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). "I didn't know that about mares having a poor record in the race, but I don't read into that at all," Surace Jr, co-director of B2B Thoroughbreds, told Racing.com. "She's a very good horse and she's there to run really well and defy history. She's four weeks between runs, but she hasn't missed a beat. We had options to go to either the Stocks Stakes or the Rose Of Kingston Stakes, but Chris was eager to get her racing in a Group 1 and this is the one we landed on. We need her to run a mile, which she hasn't done successfully in the past, but that was at Randwick. The 1600 metres at Caulfield should suit better, plus we have James McDonald on from a good barrier."

Gallo Nero fresh for Roman Consul

Group 2-placed colt Gallo Nero (Wootton Bassett) will bid to land a maiden stakes success on Saturday when he lines up in the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill. Placed in both the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and Spirit Of Boom Classic (Gr 2, 1200m), the Team Hawkes-trained son of Wootton Bassett will be having his first start this campaign having signed off his two-year-old season with a ninth-placed run in the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on May 31. "We've always had a high opinion of this horse. He won at Randwick and beat Apocalyptic that day and then went to the Magic Millions and ran a creditable race," Michael Hawkes, who trains in partnership with brothers Wayne and John, said. "He has furnished into a lovely colt now. He has done everything right and he's a gentle giant, very placid. He's got a great attitude and good demeanour and he's in for a really good prep. I'm pretty comfortable with where he's at. He is forward enough. He's going to improve through the prep, there is no doubt about that. Like all our horses do, they improve as they get into their routine and their preparations. He has had a good jump out at home, a great barrier trial and I'm looking forward to it.”

Whisky On The Hill out to enhance Cup prospects

Last-start R.M. Ansett Classic (Listed, 2415m) winner Whisky On The Hill (Ribchester) will bid to secure a slot in next month's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when he tackles this weekend's Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) on Saturday. The race offers the winner a ballot exemption spot in Saturday week's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), something that Post Impressionist (Teofilo), Young Werther (Tavistock), Brayden Star (Twilight Son) and Plymouth (The Autumn Sun) will be aiming to grab in this weekend's Group 2. However, the Glen Thompson-trained Whisky On The Hill will be aimed at the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) on October 22 or the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) two days later - both ballot exemption races for the Melbourne Cup - following the Herbert Power. "He'll run Saturday then most likely the Geelong Cup or the Moonee Valley Gold Cup as we're just trying to get him into the Melbourne Cup," Thompson said. "We decided to not focus on Caulfield as his aim all the way through has been the Melbourne Cup. I don't think he's classy enough to win the Caulfield Cup and running there, finishing a nice fifth, sixth or seventh, isn't going to help you get into the Cup. I would rather go to Geelong or Moonee Valley, where you're guaranteed of getting a start and being a chance of winning."

Hill Stakes task for Lindermann

The Chris Waller-trained Lindermann (Lonhro) will be chasing another big payday when he lines up in Saturday's Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill. The Group 2 contest has a prize-money pot of $2 million and Lindermann - a Group 1-winning six-year-old gelding - will need to overcome the outside draw of 15 to land the first-placed prize. “There’s massive prize-money on offer and it’s a perfect race for him,’’ Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth told Racing NSW. “He’s been so tough all preparation. He often gets half written off like a second tier horse. All of his form is rock solid, it's just incredibly hard to win those races. This is a perfect opportunity for him to pump up his bank balance but it just makes it awkward from the draw.” Lindermann, who has racked up earnings of just short of $2.5 million during his 33-start career, has had three runs so far this campaign - including for a win in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) two starts back and a last-start second in the 7 Stakes (1600m) - and will be joined this weekend by stablemates Kovalica (Ocean Park) and Militarize (Dundeel). “Nash [Rawiller] galloped Kovalica as well, he had to stick with Lindermann and has a good association with both horses and said they’re both absolutely flying,” Duckworth said. “He’ll [Rawiller] be a bit upset with the barrier draw but it’s the right type of race for him.”

Elamaz aims to maintain unbeaten Rosehill record

Having won the W J McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) on his first Australian start in June, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained French import Elamaz (Gleneagles) will bid to make it two wins from as many starts at the track when takes his chance in Saturday's Hill Stakes. After winning the W J McKell Cup, the six-year-old gelding was given a break and Bott is expecting improvement from the six-year-old’s first-up fifth in the Kingston Town Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last month. "I thought he was going to be vulnerable whichever way the race panned out," Bott said. "It was highlighted more by the way it was run. He loomed into it like he was going to run a nice race and just peaked. Back in trip slightly should benefit him and he'll strip fitter for the run. He will stay around for a couple of those races like the Craven Plate."

Alan Brown the ideal fit for Eagle-bound Bosustow

Dual stakes-winning four-year-old Bosustow (Blue Point) will take his chance in Saturday's $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill as the son of Blue Point (Shamardal) bids to build on a promising first-up performance. The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained entire finished well to grab second in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on his return and is being aimed at next month's lucrative $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m). “I’m really happy with him, particularly as he was probably only sort of 80 per cent going into that run in terms of fitness,’’ Annabel Archibald told Racing NSW. “I thought he was a little bit stuffy in his Wyong trial. He was in the market and maybe the market had more trust than me but it’s always nice when they run above where you think they are. I thought he’d need the run and I think he did, and you’ll see really nice improvement.” Josh Parr, who has ridden Bosustow in eight of his 17 starts and for his past two wins, is back up again in the saddle. “A lot of the key to this horse is Josh Parr, he seems to get on really well with him,’’ Archibald said. “It’s three weeks from the Bill Ritchie to this and three weeks from this to the [Golden] Eagle. It’s nice spacing with him. He’s been a great horse for us, it’d be great to jag a Group 1 with him at some stage. He’s been placed in a few and he’s won the owners a lot of prize-money.”

Pounce to make Australian debut

Chris Waller has had much success with European imports, but his stable is now turning its attention to unlocking the potential of US-trained horses with new arrival Pounce (Lookin At Lucky). Waller’s early success was built around stayers sourced from Europe, but with that market increasingly competitive, the influx of American-bred and raced horses is beginning to grow. The Yulong-owned mares Moira (Ghostzapper), Full Count Felicia (War Front) and River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) all began their careers in the US before joining Waller’s team, with River Of Stars already Group 1-placed in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). “They've done a pretty good job, the American [horses] in recent years,” assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. “Yulong has given us a good few mares, the likes of Moira and Full Count Felicia so we have had a sample but it's always interesting to see where form marries up. [Pounce] certainly looks like she is going to make the grade anyway.” A dual Group 3 winner over a mile in the US, Pounce will make her Australian debut in Saturday’s The Nivison (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill, with Adam Hyeronimus booked to ride from barrier four. “Once she gets up over a suitable distance she will be a genuine contender over here,” Duckworth said. “She hasn't missed a beat since arriving. It's just whether the distance is going to be too short.” Owned by Resolute Racing, the operation of American businessman John Stewart, Pounce will aim to add to her black type record as connections map out a local campaign. “She is a multiple Group Three winner so it will be about trying to get more black type on her page,” Duckworth said.

VJA provides update on Tom Prebble

The Victorian Jockeys’ Association (VJA) has issued an update on apprentice jockey Tom Prebble, a month after his serious fall at Warrnambool on September 9. VJA CEO Matt Hyland said in a statement that Prebble “has no feeling or sensation below the T4 level of his spine”, but has made encouraging progress since undergoing surgery to stabilise the injury. Hyland confirmed that doctors at the Austin Hospital’s spinal care unit have cleared Prebble to transfer to the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre in Kew, where he has begun intensive rehabilitation. “With the support of the outstanding team at Talbot, Tom has already learned to transfer from his wheelchair to bed, in and out of a car and begun working through the many challenges associated with a spinal cord injury,” Hyland said. He added that Prebble continues to wear a hard neck brace for a separate fracture, with a review due in the coming days, and that the rider’s goal is to be able to return home by the end of the year. Hyland also passed on Prebble’s gratitude to the racing industry for its ongoing care and support. “Tom has specifically asked that his appreciation be passed on regarding the care, concern and ongoing messages of support received from the racing community, especially from owners, trainers and jockeys who have supported him throughout his nearly three years as an apprentice jockey in Victoria,” Hyland said.

New Zealand

NZB Breeze Ups postponed one week

NZB made the decision to postpone the breeze-ups for the 2025 Ready to Run Sale due to unfavourable weather conditions with heavy rain and wind predicted through to Tuesday. The breeze will now take place at Te Rapa on October 20 and 21 and they will kick off at 10am each day. NZB is committed to conducting the breeze-ups on a turf surface at Te Rapa, the overwhelming preference from buyers and agents. “In association with Waikato Thoroughbred Racing, we’ve been monitoring the weather forecast closely,” commented NZB’s director of operations James Jennings. “Ideally, we want two consistent days for breeze-ups, and it has become apparent that will not be the case next week with the adverse weather that is being predicted.” The auction house strongly believes that postponing the breeze-ups is conducive to all vendors, preparers, buyers and the horses. The breeze-ups will be conducted on these new dates regardless of the circumstances, with a revised schedule to be published next week.

Archaic Smile chasing open stakes honours

Archaic Smile (Credit: NZB)

Proven mare Archaic Smile (Saxon Warrior) is looking to make her presence felt in the open ranks before a potential southern trip when she contests Saturday’s Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Otaki. A Group 1 performing juvenile, Archaic Smile found that form again in her autumn three-year-old campaign, narrowly missing top honours in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) and Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). She resumed with a solid fourth in an open 1200-metre event behind Midnight Edition (Wrote) at Te Rapa, a performance that gave trainer Hollie Wynyard the option of going to the Spring Sprint, or the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on Sunday at Rotorua. Once barrier draws came out on Wednesday morning, that became an easy decision for the Cambridge horsewoman. “She drew 11 at Rotorua against a Group 1 field, so we’ll head down to Otaki having drawn two down there,” Wynyard said. “It was a good run first-up, she’s coming out of three-year-old grade and was straight into pretty much the Foxbridge Plate field, so I was happy with that. She’s pulled up well, bounced through it and she’s a mare that does well with racing. She’ll get better the further she gets into her prep. I don’t know how good she is on the really heavy tracks, I’m hoping Otaki will come back to a decent heavy but there is a question mark on how she’ll handle it. But she’s flying, she had a gallop last Saturday at Matamata on a very heavy track and looked like she swam through it quite well.”

Muniandy unearths another promising three-year-old

Wingatui trainer Shankar Muniandy is developing a knack for producing exciting three-year-olds, and he may have his hands on another in Pontoon (Ace High). The Ace High (High Chaparral) gelding had the one start as a two-year-old, finishing fifth over 1000 metres at Riccarton in March, and he returned to the Christchurch track last month where he placed in the Guineas Trial (1400m). Muniandy was pleased with that effort, and, while he said he has strengthened since he was a juvenile, there is still plenty of improvement to come. “When I got him as a two-year-old he showed us quite a bit,” Muniandy said. “He is still green and has got a lot of learning to do, but he came back from his spell big and strong, and he has got a bright future as a three-year-old. He has come through the race really well, his work has been good. He is really happy and I can’t fault him.” Pontoon will be pitted into stakes company for the first time on Saturday in the Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ashburton, for which he is rated a $9.50 hope with TAB bookmakers. “It is not hard to ride him. Terry Moseley knows the horse well and if he can be in the first half dozen I will be happy,” Muniandy said.

Waiting game with Jaarffi rewarding connections

Patience has been a key factor in the rise of Jaarffi (Iffraaj) to the elite-level and she’s in good order to open her six-year-old campaign at Rotorua. The Cambridge Stud-bred and raced mare has trialled well ahead of her resuming run in Sunday’s Sweynesse Stakes and any improvement in track conditions will further boost her chances. Jaarffi has a handy first-up record of two wins from five attempts, and with a rating of 100 is well-suited by the weight-for-age conditions. “I wanted to run her a couple of weeks ago in an open handicap, but she got 62 kilograms which was too tough,” trainer Lance Noble said. “I’m a little bit worried about how wet the track might be, but we have to kick her off and she trialled well on the synthetic. She needs plenty of speed on and Rotorua can be a swooper’s track, if she handles the footing then hopefully she can get over the top of them.” Jaarffi has won four of her 17 starts and last preparation the daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) finished runner-up in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), after an interrupted run, and the Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). “Her form was super and she was a bit unlucky not to win the Group 1,” Noble said. “She’s got a bit stronger, she’s always been a bit weak and she looks the full deal now."

Busy weekend ahead for Pike

A nose was the difference between a $30,000 prize and a mid-week placing for Tony Pike at Avondale on Wednesday, and he hopes to continue being on the right side of the result across several venues this weekend. The Cambridge horseman eyed the NZB Mega Maiden Series bonus for his filly Princess Elsa (Frosted), who was resuming as a three-year-old following a string of juvenile placings. She didn’t get all favours in the running but was tough late to get the head bob from Kairos (Time Test) by 0.1 lengths. “She had good two-year-old form without winning, but she’s come up a lot stronger this preparation,” Pike said. “We were a little bit concerned with the heavy track conditions, but she toughed it out pretty well, being caught out three-wide and was strong over the final stages. She just managed to get the win and there was a good gap back to third, so it’s great to have that under her belt. Hopefully we can get another win on the board for the team in the coming weeks.” Pike will have a number of key chances heading to Rotorua on Sunday, including multiple Group winner Val Di Zoldo (War Decree) dropping back in class to contest the Staphanos Classic (1950m). The middle-distance specialist found her rivals a touch sharp last start in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), but up in distance with Sam McNab’s three-kilogram claim, Pike hopes to see an improved effort. “She’s a quality mare, she’s had the two runs under her belt and dropping back from weight-for-age Group 1 company to handicap conditions, you’d expect her to run a much-improved race,” he said.

Shailer returns to training ranks

Trainer Kris Shailer’s name has been absent from the racebook for the last three years, but will make a return on Sunday at Arawa Park, albeit with a line running through it. He was set to line-up regally-bred gelding Magice (Savabeel) in the Rotorua Racecourse’s Race For The Ladies 1215, however, after drawing barrier 13 on the Heavy 10 track, the son of Savabeel (Zabeel) will likely be scratched. “He is going to be over 12 months between races and we don’t want him to have a real gut buster first-up,” Shailer said. “We have drawn wide and we just want to give him every opportunity to race up to the best of his ability first-up.” Formerly trained in Matamata by Glenn Old, Magice won one and placed in two of his three starts in New Zealand as a two-year-old before transferring to the care of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman in Australia. He had four jumpouts across the Tasman but remained unraced and returned home to Waikato Stud earlier this year and entered the care of Shailer at the farm’s private training facility, Courtza Park. “He had good form when he was with Glenn Old and then he went to Peter Moody’s, who found a chip in his fetlock, so he came home and got gelded and he has stayed on the farm,” Shailer said. “Garry [Chittick, owner-breeder] is happy to have him home and see him most days.” Magice, a full-brother to Group 1 winner and Waikato Stud resident stallion Noverre, ran fourth in his returning trial at Arawa Park last month over 1000 metres, pleasing Shailer with his hit-out. “It was a great trial,” Shailer said. “It was good to see him settle in behind them. He overdid things as a colt, but now that he is a gelding and he has travelled to Australia and back, hopefully we can see him get up in trip and hopefully win a race or two.”

UK: Term Of Endearment back to winning ways

Term Of Endearment (Credit: Racing Post)

The William Haggas-trained Term Of Endearment (6 m Sea The Moon - Miss You Too by Montjeu) scored her first win of 2025 when landing a determined success in Thursday’s Beckford Stakes (Listed, 1m 6f) at Bath. Ridden by Tom Marquand, the Yulong-owned mare took up the lead entering the home straight and, after having been headed slightly with two furlongs left to run, rallied gamely to deny Fairy Glen (Farhh) by a half-length. There was a further two and a quarter lengths back to Siege Of Troy (Siyouni) in third.

UK: Nine declared for Dewhurst Stakes

The Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) promises to be one of the best juvenile races of the season after leading hopes Gstaad (Starspangledbanner), Distant Storm (Night Of Thunder) and Zavateri (Without Parole) were declared in a nine-runner field for Saturday’s Group 1 at Newmarket. Aidan O’Brien seeks an outright record ninth victory in the race and Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Gstaad is his main hope on the back of two narrow Group 1 defeats, including when beaten a head by Zavateri in the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at the Curragh last month. The Ballydoyle trainer also runs National Stakes third Italy (Wootton Bassett) in a race he most recently landed with City Of Troy (Justify) two years ago. Distant Storm, an impressive course-and-distance winner in the Tattersalls Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) last month, is one of three runners for Charlie Appleby, who has won three of the last six runnings. William Buick rides Distant Storm, while Billy Loughnane partners Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) scorer Saba Desert (Dubawi), who wears first-time cheekpieces, and Rossa Ryan is aboard outsider Pacific Avenue (Dubawi). Zavateri has been a stable star for Eve Johnson Houghton and arrives with a 4-4 record, adding to Group 2 wins at Newmarket’s July festival and Glorious Goodwood with a Group 1 success in Ireland last time. The John and Thady Gosden-trained Oxagon (Frankel), who finished second to subsequent Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Puerto Rico (Wootton Bassett) in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Doncaster, Karl Burke’s unbeaten Alparslan (Dandy Man), and the Yulong-owned Gewan (Night Of Thunder) are others confirmed in a race that has attracted its biggest field since 2020.

FR: Arc winner Daryz to remain in training

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Daryz (Sea The Stars) will stay in training as a four-year-old, the Aga Khan Studs revealed on Thursday. The three-year-old colt secured the biggest win of his career when defeating Minnie Hauk (Frankel) in a memorable battle in France's showcase race last Sunday, but his future was unclear following the race. However, unlike his sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross), Daryz could bid to retain his crown as a four-year-old after his connections enacted a plan to race on next season rather than head to stud. He will not run again as a three-year-old. Nemone Routh, racing manager of the Aga Khan Studs in France, said: "Daryz has taken his race very well and is in good form following his top-class performance. He is a beautiful horse who resembles his sire and has a great constitution. He progressed throughout the season and we are very much looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish next year."

'This is my best day in the sales ring, it’s very emotional' - a new high for Luca Cumani as Frankel colt fetches 2,200,000gns

Godolphin picked up where they left off on day one by securing a 2.2 million guineas son of Frankel during the opening hour of selling at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on Wednesday.

The opening session saw Sheikh Mohammed’s operation invest 9.3 million guineas on ten yearlings, and the ruler of Dubai was seemingly in no mood to be denied on day two either.

Juddmonte’s general manager Simon Mockridge was among those still in there pitching at the business end of the bidding, but it was Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida who ultimately filled the role of frustrated underbidder. This is not the first time Nakauchida has finished runner-up on a notable Book 1 offering, as he also underbid last year’s 4.4 million guineas top lot, who was also by Frankel.

Wednesday’s seven-figure youngster was offered by the Cumanis’ Fittocks Stud and hails from a family that Godolphin already knows plenty about. The colt is a half-brother to two winners, most notably the Charlie Appleby-trained Ottoman Fleet, a two-time Grade 2 scorer in the US.

Another sibling, the two-year-old Zarak filly Ottoman Empress, made a promising debut in the Godolphin blue when second in Newmarket maiden at the end of September.

“Nearly, nearly!” said Luca Cumani as he gestured that he was holding back tears in the aftermath of the transaction. “This is my best day in the sales ring, it’s very emotional. We’re very thankful to all the people who appreciated the horse. I’m especially thankful to my stud groom Martin [Languillet] and all the staff, who’ve done so much work with the horse.

“It’s fantastic, that’s the highest price we’ve ever had. We sold one for two million last year, which was very exciting, and this is even better! He’s such a lovely horse, he’s never put a foot wrong. He’s a great-looking Frankel colt out of a mare who’s already proven. I’m delighted that he’s going to a very good home.”

The colt was bred by a partnership consisting of the Cumanis, Newsells Park Stud and the Marinopoulos family’s Marmion Vauville. Cumani explained how the partnership came together when Fittocks Stud offered the dam, Innevera, at the 2022 December Mares Sale. Jill Lamb signed the ticket on that occasion at 750,000gns.

“We were selling the mare for the Marinopouloses, who’ve been friends and owners with us for a long time,” he said. “They wanted to stay in but had to dissolve their own partnership, and at the same time Graham [Smith-Bernal, Newsells Park Stud owner] said that if we saw something nice at the sales then we should get together and do something in partnership.

“We know this mare, she’s been at our stud many times, so we said this could be a good proposition for a partnership. That’s how it came together between the Marinopouloses, Newsells Park and us.”

Godolphin remained clear at the head of the leading buyers' table with a spend of 14.75 million guineas spread across 15 lots.

Coolmore hoping for another Delacroix with 1,300,000gns Dubawi colt

Emma Banks (Credit: Laura Green)

A good day for Fittocks Stud got even better a short while later when the Newmarket operation sold the Dubawi colt out of Lady Bowthorpe. Coolmore’s MV Magnier, who signed his name alongside Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm brand, delivered the winning bid of 1.3 million guineas.

Amo Racing and George Boughey were among the players involved earlier on, but it was Ed Sackville, standing beside Ed Walker and Simon Sadler of TBT Racing, who filled the role of underbidder.

The seven-figure youngster is the second foal out of the mare, who carried Emma Banks’ colours to victory in five races. The highlight of her time in training with William Jarvis came in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes of 2021, a race she won by a length and a half from Shadwell’s Zeyaadah. A brother to this colt sold to Godolphin for 2 million guineas at last year’s renewal of Book 1. He has been named Desert Knight and is in training with Charlie Appleby.

“It’s a very strange business but it’s great,” said Banks. “I’m so lucky to have a mare that has produced two beautiful yearlings. Her Too Darn Hot foal is lovely and she’s in foal to Wootton Bassett - exciting!

“I’m very happy, and this gives me an excuse to descend on Ballydoyle next year and insist I come see how he’s getting on! I’m thrilled, it’s not every day you sell a horse for that much money.”

Banks also had an update on her star mare, saying: “If the vets are right then we have a Wootton Bassett filly in the oven, so I’m thrilled about that. You dream of having a mare like Lady Bowthorpe, so I’m very emotionally invested in her, of course. That first filly stays with me, I think, although that’s still a long way down the line.”

Banks’ journey with Lady Bowthorpe began Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale back in 2017, where the daughter of Nathaniel was picked up by James Toller for 82,000gns. She went on to net almost £670,000 in prize-money and has now generated 3.3 million guineas in Book 1 yearling receipts.

“He’s a lovely horse and Lady Bowthorpe was a very good racefilly, as we all know,” said Magnier. “It’s a great result for Emma Banks, she’s a very nice lady so well done to her.

"Dubawi is still going well and thankfully we’re going to retire Delacroix at the end of this year. He’s a complete outcross for us, so he’s probably the most important horse we’d have retired in a good while. He has everything: race record, pedigree, and as a complete outcross we can really get behind the horse. If this fella is any good then he’ll follow a similar path.”

Magnier made another seven-figure signing later in the day when going to 1.7 million guineas for the No Nay Never colt out of Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Millisle. The colt, whose Frankel half-sister Alfareqa sold to Shadwell for 1.6 million guineas two years ago, was bred by Stonethorn Stud Farms and presented by Watership Down Stud.

“No Nay Never is having a very good year with the likes of Charles Darwin and True Love,” said Magnier. “Blackbeard [another son of No Nay Never] is having a great sale here and there’s plenty of good word for Little Big Bear. Millisle was a very good filly, so hopefully this colt ends up being a good, quick horse.”

Having drawn a blank on day one, the Coolmore partners ended the second session with five recruits secured for a spend of 4.8 million guineas.

‘Give me a Gold Cup anytime!’ - Amo Racing move for Gigginstown House-bred Night Of Thunder colt at 1,700,000gns

“A good five minutes’ work,” was Eddie O’Leary’s typically understated reaction to seeing back-to-back Lynn Lodge Stud lots bring a combined 2.2 million guineas midway through the second session at Tattersalls Book 1.

The lion’s share of that sum was generated by a Night Of Thunder colt who was knocked down to Amo Racing’s Kia Joorabchian at 1.7 million guineas.

Out of the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes third Model Guest, the colt is a brother to Zhang Yuesheng’s smart two-year-old filly Evolutionist. That €600,000 purchase could provide the pedigree with an almost immediate Group 1 update as she is set to contest the Fillies’ Mile on Friday.

The colt emerged as one of the week’s major talking horses, and O’Leary was effusive in his praise of the strapping youngster.

“He’s an absolutely beautiful horse with a magnificent mind,” he said. “The sire is obviously very, very good and I hope the filly is very good; she runs in the Group 1 on Friday. He came out of the field in February and looked like this. He’s just a stunning horse. We didn’t prep him, we just brought him up here.

“It’s a great day, we’ve more to sell, but it’s been a brilliant day. You’re never confident, you just hope the people show up, and they did. I hope he’s very lucky for Kia. I hope he’s as good as I think he is. I’d like to thank all the lads at home too, they do a great job and it’s all very much appreciated.”

The colt was bred under the banner of Michael O'Leary’s Gigginstown House, a name more closely associated with the National Hunt sphere rather than blue-chip Flat breeding. Asked where the productive spell of selling ranked among his best days in the business, Eddie O’Leary grinned and said: “Give me a Gold Cup anytime!”

The other lot in Lynn Lodge’s big-money brace was the Wootton Bassett filly out of a half-sister to Taghrooda who fetched 500,000gns from Japanese buyer Tsunefumi Kusama.

Joorabchian delegated media duties to bloodstock agent Ben McElroy after signing for the seven-figure Night Of Thunder colt, but indicated his purchase would head down the road to his base at Freemason Lodge Stables.

“He’s a fantastic-looking horse with great strength and movement,” said McElroy. “Obviously the full-sister can run, she’s entered in the Fillies’ Mile on Friday. Regardless of the sire, he was one of the best physicals here; he’s outstanding. And Night Of Thunder is phenomenal. He started at the bottom and has worked his way up. He goes from strength to strength, and hopefully this colt can add his name to the roll of honour. The sire is at the elite level now.”

The Night Of Thunder colt was Amo Racing’s second seven-figure pickup of the day, having earlier gone to 2.2 million guineas for the Wootton Bassett half-brother to Crypto Force from Marlhill House Stud. Coolmore’s MV Magnier filled the role of underbidder on both colts.

“To be honest with you, I was hoping [the price] would be half that,” Joorabchian said after signing for the Wootton Bassett colt. “Unfortunately when you’re bidding against the other big guys, you have to really like the horse and really go for it, and you don’t have much choice. He’ll go to Freemason and we’ll see how he goes."

He added: "The two colts we paid a lot of money for [over the first two days] have very good pedigrees and are by very good stallions. When you’re talking about Frankel and Wootton Bassett, you’re talking about the cream of the crop. That’s really what we’re looking for. We’re also looking for fillies that can be potential broodmares. I’ve said before, we’re 30 or 40 years behind the big operations. We’re just a baby operation trying to catch up.”

Amo’s spending continued late into the session when another well-related Wootton Bassett colt became the day’s third yearling to make 2.2 million guineas. The youngster was bred by Al Shahania Stud and offered through Newsells Park. He is out of Qabala, a daughter of Scat Daddy who won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and was third in Hermosa’s 1,000 Guineas.

The colt is a sibling to two winners, including the unbeaten Raammee who took his record to two from two with a 12-length romp in a Newcastle novice stakes last month.

“When the bidding started at zero I thought we might have a chance, but there were three parties out here that were whacking it back and forth pretty quickly against each other," said Alex Elliott. "I think we’ve bought two serious Wootton Bassett colts today, the one from Marlhill and now this one out of Qabala, who was a very good filly for Roger Varian.

“The Persian King half-brother [Raammee] appears to be a bit of a freak. His performance on debut at Kempton was pretty special and then he came back and won at Newcastle. Wootton Bassett is an upgrade on most stallions, and with the page going back to that huge Juddmonte family, I think he’s got the potential to be a very special horse.”

That signing took Amo’s Book 1 spend to 11.91 million guineas for eight new recruits.

Derek Leung notches 500th Hong Kong win as Tony Cruz slots Happy Valley treble

Derek Leung soared into elite company during a meeting of milestones at Happy Valley on Wednesday night by becoming only the fourth homegrown Hong Kong, China jockey to reach the 500-win landmark.

Leung, 37, joined Tony Cruz (946), Vincent Ho (612) and Matthew Chadwick (569) as the city’s only homegrown riders to post 500 or more wins when Frankie Lor’s Regal Gem (Zoustar) triumphed by a short-head over Never Too Soon (Written Tycoon).

“First, I’d like to say thank you to The Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Apprentice School for looking after me and helping me with everything,” Leung said. “I need to thank all the trainers and owners who have always supported me. So many great experiences and opportunities I can’t forget.

“It’s good to make 500 winners and be the fourth local jockey [to reach that landmark]. I hope I can keep it up and keep riding winners. Every winner is very important for me, especially the first winner and the first Group 1, and representing Hong Kong is unforgettable. I hope to keep improving myself and keep doing great.”

Leung’s biggest successes in Hong Kong so far include winning the 2017 Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) aboard Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) and the 2024 Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) with Victor The Winner (Toronado), as well as twice winning the Tony Cruz Award as Hong Kong’s leading homegrown jockey in 2016/17 and 2017/18.

Leung’s achievement followed Angus Chung’s effort to clock his 100th Hong Kong success.

Celebrating his best meeting of the 2025/26 season with a treble, the legendary Cruz anointed Chung as a potential future star after the young jockey brought up his century of victories.

As one of the most decorated figures in Hong Kong racing history with six jockey championships, two training crowns and a combined 2,522 wins – 946 as a jockey and 1,576 as a trainer – Cruz said Chung has the attributes to reach the top after his victory on Parents’ Love (Deep Field) in the Class 4 Man Yiu Handicap (1000m).

“He’s a young jockey with a bright future, I believe he’s improving all the time,” Cruz said. “Whatever I say, he always remembers – I don’t have to repeat what I say – and he’s one kid who’s learning and improving all the time and he’s very keen.

“He’s spot on with the morning trackwork and never one time is he late, so I see a lot of potential. He wants to be successful in Hong Kong as a local jockey and I want him to accomplish what I have done in my life.”

Chung credited the bulk of his success to his mentor after Parents’ Love led most of the way in the first leg of a running treble for Cruz.

“Tony is my main support – probably half my winners have come from him. He has taught me quite a lot of things. If not for him, I cannot get in that race so I appreciate people who support me,” Chung said.

“Parents’ Love had an easy lead and finished very well. He gave me full confidence and I didn’t have to worry about a horse going past me.”

A product of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School, Chung rode 76 winners in South Australia from 2021 when attached to trainer Jon O’Connor’s stable before returning to Hong Kong for the 2022/23 season.

Chung showed the benefit of his overseas stint with 46 wins in the 2023/24 season to claim his first Tony Cruz Award.

Parents’ Love (Credit: HKJC)

“I’m very grateful to have such a good master and to stay with him [Cruz],” Chung said. “It’s my fourth season and I’m glad that I can get 100 wins, but I’m trying to get more.”

Cruz combined with another of his proteges, Chadwick, to land the Class 3 HKEX Cup Handicap (1650m) with Viva Graciousness (Deep Field), before teaming with Jerry Chau to score with Flying Wrote (Wrote) in the first section of the Class 4 Li Yuen Handicap (1200m).

Mark Newnham extended his lead at the top of the trainers’ championship when Lunar Dash (Street Boss) finished solidly to land the second section of the Class 4 Li Yuen Handicap (1200m) for Zac Purton.

With ten wins, Newnham leads David Hayes (eight), Caspar Fownes (seven), Danny Shum (seven) and Cruz (seven) and hopes Lunar Dash can continue to develop.

“He showed above average ability from the start. His trials have always been good,” the Australian said. “He’s maturing slowly. Through the race, he was good, but when he joined the lead, he still got a little bit lost and wanted to wander out, so he’s got improvement to come. I just think that it’s going to take a while for him to realise his potential, but he’s certainly got enough.”

Purton completed a race-to-race double when Francis Lui’s Mighty Steed (Time Test) prevailed in the first section of the Class 4 Man Cheung Handicap (1650m), before the David Hall-trained Kyrus Dragon (Safeguard) snared the first section of the Class 3 Harbour View Handicap (1200m) under Karis Teetan.

Winless in his first 24 Hong Kong starts, Shum’s Hakka Radiance (Massaat) made it two victories in a row by landing the Class 5 Pedder Handicap (1800m), before Manfred Man’s Sturdy Ruby (Street Boss) notched his third course and distance triumph with success in the second section of the Class 4 Man Cheung Handicap (1650m) under a patient ride from Ho.

Michael Freedman may well have another Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner-in-waiting on his hands after exciting juvenile colt Incognito (Stay Inside) scored an impressive debut victory in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Incognito (AUS)

Owner: James Harron Bloodstock Colts, TFI, Mrs B C Bateman, Bundarra Breeding and Racing Pty Ltd, Mr M A De Stoop, G1G Colts & Breeding Pty Ltd, The Northerly 25, Love Racing, Mr F P Doyle, Mr D Saab, Balius Farm, Nine9Park Pty Ltd

Sales: 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale V: Eureka Stud P: James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership/Tony Fung Colts, $1,000,000

Won: Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate, Group 3, 1000m, Randwick, October 4

The colt became the first starter and first stakes winner for Newgate Farm’s freshman Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), who was trained to Golden Slipper glory in 2021 by Freedman and older brother Richard.

Raced in the dark green and gold silks of James Harron, Incognito jumped well from barrier four under Tommy Berry to settle fifth well off the pace, before peeling out in the home straight and demonstrating an impressive turn of foot to kick clear of his rivals.

After fighting out the finish with I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs), the colt scored by 0.3 lengths, with Revengeance (Hellbent) a further 0.4 lengths behind in third.

“It’s a big thrill to win a race like this, but to win it with a son of a colt that we trained for the Golden Slipper is an extra big thrill,” said Freedman.

“He's always really impressed us at home. He's always shown he's got a good turn of foot, which he showed in the trial, but I think he just got up beside those other horses and was having a bit of a look at them.

“We worked him with an older horse here on Tuesday morning to give him something to aim up on, and it was vastly different. He sat off the back of him and worked past him and did it well, so I thought if we could replicate that today, we'd be thereabouts.
Tommy said to me that if we get the right sort of trail and the speed today, I know he'll quicken up really well, which he did. “

Freedman said the colt would be sent straight out for a spell before targets in the new year, possibly the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 10.

“We'll have a chat with James [Harron] and the crew,” he said. “He is a Magic Millions graduate, so I guess that is a possibility. Otherwise, a nice break and then start focusing on the autumn.”

Bred by Black Soil Bloodstock, Incognito was offered by Eureka Stud at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and was purchased for $1 million by James Harron and Tony Fung’s colts partnership.

Incognito is the second foal out of Bleu Zebra (I Am Invincible), a half-sister to Melbourne Listed winner Fox Swift (Foxwedge). Third dam Pay My Bail (Justice Prevails) was New Zealand’s Champion 3YO Sprinter of 2003-04, a five-time stakes winner, and threw two black type victors in White Moss (Mossman) and White Sage (Reset).

Bleu Zebra now has a yearling filly by Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal), and a colt foal by Eureka’s Don Corleone (Extreme Choice).
