Inspections are well underway at Riverside Stables ahead of Thursday’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale, where the newly formed Hunters Lodge partnership of Cade Hunter and Liam Ruddy will make their first foray as vendors.

The partnership, which brings together Hunter’s pre-training expertise and Ruddy’s racing management experience with Ciaron Maher, has assembled a seven-lot debut draft headlined by Lot 188, a colt by Toronado (High Chaparral) who clocked the fastest breeze in the catalogue, when stopping the clock at an impressive 10.05.

Speaking alongside Hunter, Ruddy told ANZ News that confidence was building ahead of the sale, with plenty of buyers showing interest in their robust first consignment.

“We’ve spent a bit of money so there’s a little bit of angst heading into it, but we’ve got some pretty nice horses so that’s made us a lot more secure,” he said.

“We bought horses that we really thought would suit an export market and we feel they appeal domestically as well. The Toronado colt has been a hit since he’s been here, the horses have been busy and inspected by the right people, so it’s been fantastic. Very good judges have been back for second looks, which makes us very happy.”

What's On

Bought for $250,000 at Inglis Easter, the Toronado colt boasts the page to back up his Warwick Farm breeze. He is out of Group 3-winning Casino Prince (Flying Spur) mare Baccarat Baby, who was just touched off by subsequent three-time Group 1 winner Kolding (Ocean Park) when second in the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at three.

It is very much a happening pedigree, with Baccarat Baby being a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Duais (Shamus Award) and May’s ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Philia (All Too Hard), who was herself named three-year-old Horse of the Year at the Queensland Thoroughbred Awards on Sunday.

“It’s a privilege to have him in our inaugural draft,” Ruddy said. “I think he’s the fastest juvenile Inglis have had for three or four years, all of our horses we just asked our riders to do a piece of work from the 500 to 600-metre mark and just breeze on the bridle.

“The way he’s done it, the whole way along he’s been such a natural. He’s a very sound horse, a very intelligent horse, and he just tries. The more you give him, the better he is. None of our horses ever went silly fast before they breezed, so whatever they did was just a real testament to their natural ability.

“Philia was probably the best staying filly last season, she gives a beautiful pedigree update,  winning The Roses. We got lucky with that and the colt has done a fantastic job furnishing since we bought him. He was a little bit raw at the Easter sales and maybe that’s why he was a bit overlooked, but over the last six months he’s just done fantastically well. Hopefully he will set us up for the next few years and be in this space for a long time to come.”

The bulk of the Hunters Lodge draft have been prepared by Wyong-based trainer Sara Ryan, who has prepared the likes of $3 million The Big Dance (1600m) winner Attractable (I Am Invincible) and $1 million Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) scorer Matcha Latte (Maurice).

“We are really thankful to Sara Ryan – the horses are looking absolutely outstanding coming out of her stable,” Ruddy said.

Hunter echoed those sentiments, adding: “The way Sara managed them and the part she played was crucial. She has added a lot of value and credibility to us in our first year, and we’re very grateful for that.”

Another to impress at the breeze ups was Lot 181, a colt by Rubick (Encosta De Lago) out of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Aqueous, herself a half-sister to a stakes winner and a relative of Hantu (Scenic), a Hong Kong Listed winner. The $14,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale purchase clocked 10.58s, showing plenty of raw ability, and Ruddy said he’s continued to furnish impressively since joining their program.

Lot 125: Star Turn ex Sevini colt(Credit: Inglis)

“We bought him on spec down in Melbourne when we made the decision to produce our own draft,” he said. “We fell in love with him and bought him for a very reasonable price. He has grown immensely since, I think he’s up to 16 hands, and put on about 70 kilos. As you see in the breeze, he’s got a high action – there’s so much greenness there and so much to come.

“The way we’ve trained these horses, we haven’t been hard on them. There is so much more to come.

“He’s out of a Written Tycoon mare. We would’ve loved to have bought a Written Tycoon in Melbourne and we had a crack at buying a few but we couldn’t get near one unfortunately at trade price. This was the closest thing we could find. If you asked any buyer what he is they’d tell you he’s a Written Tycoon.”

Two colts by Star Turn (Star Witness) add further intrigue, the first (Lot 125) a Inglis Classic Sale $100,000 purchase out of Sevini (Sebring), a half-sister to ill-fated McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Fast Witness (Star Witness).

Lot 212: Tagaloa ex Dardania colt (Credit:  Inglis)

“He is the first horse we purchased. He’s out of a Sebring mare and he’s a big strong strapping colt and one you’d imagine would appeal to the international market,” Ruddy said.

“He’s closely related to Fast Witness, who was a good horse of Ciaron Maher’s who we didn’t get to see the best of. He’ll be better in six months as we were mindfully soft on him, we wanted to look after him early in his career. We want to be vendors that look after their horses.”

On the Star Turn out of winning Lonhro (Octagonal) mare What A Treat (Lot 162), Ruddy said: “He’s a better horse than his breeze up time [13.10s] suggests, he’s a big horse and was a victim of circumstance…when he went to the breeze ups he was coltish. He’ll make a bread and butter racehorse as a gelding.”

Hunters Lodge also has colts on offer by Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) – Lot 156 – and Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) – Lot 212, who both have Hong Kong black type on their page.

On the Yes Yes Yes colt, Ruddy said: “There’s a fair bit of Hong Kong in his pedigree, he is a little bit small, a sharp individual who’s only going to improve for time.

Meanwhile, the Tagaloa is expected to get a trip: “We think he’s a middle-distance to a mile sort,” Ruddy said. “He breezed well enough without stopping the clock [11.02s] and he’s very straightforward. A proper racehorse I would imagine. I think he’d appeal to the domestic market as well, being by a young sire and a real workman sort.”

Rounding out the draft is Lot 140, a colt by All Too Hard (Casino Prince) who appears ideally suited to an international market. He is out of Stormy Elect (Ferlax), a half-sister to Hong Kong Group 2 winner and 2019 Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) and Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) hero Furore (Pierro). The dam is also a half-sister to Blizzard (Starcraft), crowned Singapore’s Champion Miler in that same year.

Ruddy said the colt shapes as a progressive type who will appreciate time and distance, noting his soundness and willing attitude in work.

Both partners are realistic about the market dynamics heading into the sale but remain upbeat about buyer engagement and the quality on offer.

“I think that the market at Inglis and the market at Magic Millions – the top end of Magics [at the Horses in Training Sale] was there, but as a generalisation with the ready-to-run market, the middle to the bottom is always difficult but we’re hopeful,” Ruddy said.

“Inglis seem to have done a very good job at assembling a buyer’s bench. It’s not a hugely big auction and there’s plenty of buyers here – so we’re very hopeful there are enough middle market buyers.

Hunter echoed those sentiments: “Inglis do a great job getting the buyers here, they are very hospitable to everyone so it makes it an attractive sale for people to come and look at these horses.

“Today we had three trainers in Hong Kong all inspecting the Toronado colt of ours – it’s a phenomenal effort. Inglis have got about 15 trainers from Hong Kong and three are all inspecting our horses at the same time.”

The timing of the auction, held in the same week as The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), also provides a welcome boost for international participation.

“I think the timing – obviously a lot of Hong Kong owners have made the trip to see Ka Ying Rising and the sale being here aligns perfectly,” Ruddy said. “Hopefully they’ll come home from their trip away with an extra horse.”

For Ruddy and Hunter, their approach to developing and presenting juveniles is centred on education and longevity, with the pair keen to establish a reputation for producing race-ready horses rather than simply breeze-up specialists.

“You spend money on marketing, on a horse’s preparations, we’ve put them in the good stables and they’ve never wanted for anything. We have treated these horses like horses that are going into any metro racing stable in Sydney. They have done all the pace work that a normal two-year-old would.

“We are breezing racehorses, we’re not training them to be breeze-up horses. That’s what we’ve tried to do from the day we started. Get them in the right system and educate them correctly.”

Their strategy also reflects commercial pragmatism, with a diverse spread of investment across their draft.

“We bought at really different price points, we paid $14,000 for the Rubick, $50,000 for the All Too Hard, $100,000 for a Star Turn and our standout horse we paid $250,000 for,” Ruddy said.

“The most important thing – and what good pinhookers have told us – is to look at the draft as a whole and success as a whole. You're obviously not going to make money on every horse you purchase, we’re very realistic with our expectations.

“We think success is getting out of a horse having not lost any money. Every horse we get out of without hurting ourselves, we learn something from that.”

And while the Baccarat Baby colt headlines the draft, Ruddy and Hunter’s first foray into the sale ring is as much about establishing their identity as it is about returns.

“Don’t get me wrong – Baccarat Baby – we really want to be making some money there, but the Rubick is a good example,” Ruddy said. “If he makes $40,000 or $50,000, that’s a great result. We’re smiling walking away from that.

“I genuinely believe that any one of our horses should be able to fit into any stable and be another horse. They should not be the breeze-up horse in the corner that you’re trying to fix and calm down. We’ve made a huge emphasis on that.”

Lindsay Park duo set for Debutant Stakes

Lindsay Park will be represented by two well-bred runners in Wednesday’s Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield in the shape of Free Flying (Snitzel) and Torture (Sword Of State). “We’ve been very happy with both of them, they both trialled well and they’ve really improved out of it,” JD Hayes said. “I really love the barrier draw for both of them and I think they’re really going to run top races the way that they’ve handled their work out of the latest trial there at Caulfield.” Free Flying, a $750,000 Easter graduate, is out of Group 3 winner Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock) making her a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Learning To Fly (Justify). The filly will race in the Yulong silks with Michael Dee booked to ride from barrier three. She has had one jump out and trial, winning her 800-metre Caulfield trial on October 2 in 47.23 seconds. Torture is out of stakes performer Ruthless Lady (Keeper), making her a half-sister to Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ruthless Dame (Tavistock). Lindsay Park Racing and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock acquired her for NZ$250,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale. Ethan Brown rides from barrier four, following her 800-metre trial at Caulfield on October 2, where she finished second, clocking a time of 47.56 seconds. “Free Flying seems like a real jump and run, early type, whereas Torture, I think, has a really nice future,” Hayes said. “It’s hard to split them and they’ve both got reasons why they can.”

Rachini to create history

The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin-trained Rachini (Zoustar) could create her own little slice of history on Thursday and become the first horse to be offered at a breeze-up sale having already made her debut on a racecourse. The daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) will make her first competitive appearance in Wednesday’s Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield where she will be ridden by Ben Allen from gate two. Rachini will then be offered as Lot 89 at the Inglis Ready2Run Sale on Thursday. She will be set for sale by Baystone Farm who pinhooked the filly for $200,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. There is a lot to like about the youngster, not only did she clock 10.81 in her Wangaratta breeze, but she is also bred on the same cross Zoustar / Fastnet Rock (Danehill) that has produced eight stakes winners including Group 1-winning trio Climbing Star, Zougotcha and Joliestar, who will shoot for Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) glory on Saturday.

Meydaan given green light for Caulfield Cup

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) entrant Meydaan (Frankel) has been cleared for Saturday’s race after completing a look at the course on Tuesday morning. Travelling foreman Paul Holley, riding the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained gelding, reported that Meydaan handled the Caulfield circuit well. "There was a bird, and he had a good look at that down the back, but over the last 600 metres I let him stride on a little bit and I was pleased with him, and he galloped out well," Holley said. "He might be better on more of a galloping track like Flemington, but he's run around Goodwood which is an undulating course. All his best runs have been at Goodwood, but I think Caulfield will be OK for him, but I think Flemington would be better again, as Caulfield you are turning all the time. Fingers crossed, we're ready to go." The gelding, who initially lost weight on arrival in Australia, has picked up quickly and is reportedly thriving in his preparation. "I think this horse is going to keep on improving," Holley said. "As a younger horse he was doing it the wrong way around. He was too keen early on, but since he's been gelded, he's learning to race properly now, and we've got the best of him to come, I think." Andrea Atzeni has been booked to ride Meydaan, with Holley expecting the gelding to settle around sixth or seventh in the run. Meydaan is the highest-rated of the international contenders, currently sitting as the $8 second pick behind Half Yours (St Jean) at $2.50.

Zahra back Middle Earth to deliver

Middle Earth (Credit: Racing Photos)

Mark Zahra is backing Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) to make his presence felt in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup on Saturday, provided he jumps from the barriers cleanly. The Ciaron Maher-trained stayer was sluggish out of the gates in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) last-start before working home nicely to finish ninth in the lead-up to the first of his major spring targets. “Yeah, we’ve got to work that out,” Zahra said about Middle Earth’s barrier manners on Tuesday. “He just got a bit agitated, the other day. Whether he got a bit hot and bothered, I don’t know, but we’ll make sure we’ve got one of the good barrier boys up with him. It’s going to be important. You can’t miss it like he did, last start, and be a chance. Let’s hope he does.” While Middle Earth hasn’t figured in the finish in any of his three starts this campaign, Zahra said he was confident the horse was ready to peak. “Ciaron’s had this race as the grand final, all the way along,” he said. “He ran 2000 [metres] first-up, and then back to 1800, so it’s been a prep where we’ve been getting him spot on for the Caulfield Cup. It’s his day to do something and I think he will. On his best form, he is quite good. If we can get it together, I think we can win.”

Allen to partner Absurde in Caulfield Cup

Ben Allen is set to have his first ride in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in eight years when he partners the Willie Mullins-trained Absurde (Fastnet Rock) in the time-honoured Group 1 this weekend. Allen had previously ridden Thomas Hobson (Halling) for the Mullins camp in the 2017 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), finishing sixth, after Joao Moreira had a fall earlier in the day and was ruled out. "I asked my manager to give them a call and see if the ride was available, but we only had an old number for them, and it was disconnected," Allen said. "By chance, Paul Bloodworth gave her a call after he had put together a list of riders for them. I did ride Thomas Hobson in the Melbourne Cup, so maybe that helped." Allen said Absurde looks to be a promising chance in the Caulfield Cup and he would thoroughly go through the Irish raiders replays before Saturday's race. "I've watched a couple of his Cup runs and I'll go and have a look at the rest of races," Allen said. "He looks the ideal ride for this type of staying race, and he will need a genuine tempo and nine times out of 10 they are run at a pretty good gallop. Allen will partner Absurde in Saturday’s feature before Kerrin McEvoy takes over for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 4.

Apocalyptic bidding for second consecutive Group 1

Michael Freedman had considered tipping Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) out for a break but reasoned the filly had enough left in the tank to chase another Group 1 success. After stretching the winning sequence to three in capturing the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on October 4, Apocalyptic is in Melbourne for a shot at the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Freedman took advantage of galloping Apocalyptic, with Mark Zahra aboard, at Caulfield on Tuesday morning, with stablemate Just A Journey (Justify) for company, and was pleased with what he saw. "I did give some thought to stopping and giving her a break, but she pulled up so we well after the Flight that we thought as long as she travelled down well and settled in well that it was worth a shy at the stumps," Freedman said. "I'm pretty excited about her and she's done a lot in a short space of time. I'm looking forward to the autumn with her as well. I think she's one of the better ones that I've had anything to do with. In Sydney there's some nice options around that 1400, 1500-metre mark. She may get a little bit further and whether we try that next preparation remains to be seen, but anywhere from six furlongs, up to a mile, is probably in her sweet spot."

Positivity set for Coongy Cup tilt

The Andrew Forsman-trained mare Positivity (Almanzor) will step out in Wednesday’s Coongy Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield and will aim to be more prominent over her preferred middle distance. A placegetter in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at three, Positivity joined Forsman’s Flemington stable last term and quickly made an impact in Victoria, winning the MRC Foundation Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) before finishing back in the 23-horse field of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Resuming in last month’s Sandown Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), Positivity was outpaced by Transatlantic (Snitzel) and Evaporate (Per Incanto), who went on to finish quinella in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). “She’s going great, I know the form doesn’t read that way, but her sectionals were very good last start, it was just too short for her,” Forsman said. “She was always going to get back and they would be too sharp, but it was a warm-up run to have her ready for this. She’s operated really well second-up before at the 2000 at Caulfield and I think it’s the right sort of race, she’s well-weighted and finally drawn a reasonable barrier. I think she’s got the ability to put herself in the first three or four in the run and I think she can run a good race.” Positivity will be ridden by Ben Allen from barrier seven, carrying 56.5kg.

Magic Time primed for Everest

Magic Time (Credit: Racing Photos)

Grahame Begg will have his first runner in the world’s richest turf race this Saturday when his classy mare Magic Time (Hellbent) lines up in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m). Begg never had the $20 million race as a fixed target but kept the door open, and a slot became available after her third placing in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “It just eventuated that she got into the race,” Begg said. “We aimed her up as far as a preparation was concerned to give her spaces between runs and if it evolved and happened she was going to be in the right place. That’s why she had a month between the Cockram and the Manikato and it gave us a three week buffer to come up to Sydney. Her Sydney form has been exemplary, whenever we’ve taken her there she’s always run well.” While Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) looms as the market leader, Begg is confident Magic Time can be competitive. “She hasn’t been that far away from them, the last two TJ Smiths she’s been beaten two lengths both times and that’s the next best race in Sydney,’’ he said. “We’re very happy with her, she’s hit her straps at the right time. She was a bit wintry going into her first start so we knew there was improvement to come and from the Manikato she’s bounced through that.” Michael Dee will have his first Everest ride on Magic Time, who will wear blinkers, and Begg is hopeful a fast tempo will suit her running style. “She’s a better horse on the outside of runners, she always has been,” he said.

Hayes happy with barrier seven for Ka Ying Rising

David Hayes has labelled Ka Ying Rising’s barrier draw of gate seven “perfect” for The Everest on Saturday at Randwick. In a spectacular drone show on Sydney Harbour, Ka Ying Rising was the first horse to have its barrier revealed, prompting a positive and unequivocal reaction from Hayes, who said jockey Zac Purton will have options from the gate. “Perfect. Anywhere from [barrier] four to eight, I was going to be happy with and we got there,” Hayes said. “[He can] jump fast and get a good position – that’s a good barrier. “I think Zac can choose whether he goes right forward or follows what could be the frantic pace. Zac will jump fast, for sure, and if the pace is hectic, he’ll back out of it. Some of his most impressive wins have been sitting off the pace. But if they miss the start and don’t go fast, he’ll lead – he’s that sort of horse and Zac’s that sort of jockey.” Ka Ying Rising’s main rivals in The Everest enjoyed contrasting fates, with Joliestar (Zoustar) drawing gate five alongside Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) (six), but Briasa (Smart Missile) (10) and Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) (11) drew wider than preferred. The other allocated gates for the remainder of The Everest are: Tempted (Street Boss) (one), Mazu (Maurice) (two), Angel Capital (Harry Angel) (three), War Machine (Harry Angel) (four), Jedibeel (Savabeel) (eight), Overpass (Vancouver) (nine) and Magic Time (12).

Freedman confident Kitten can peak in King Charles

It’s been a campaign of catch-up for Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), but Sam Freedman believes the gelding is ready to show his best in Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m) at Randwick. After being withdrawn at the barriers in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) when he was due to resume, Tom Kitten has since contested the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), races Freedman said were not run to suit. “He's been good, he arrived up in Sydney on Sunday morning,” Freedman said. “He worked strongly Tuesday morning, so he just needs a big field, a lot of tempo. He should get that on Saturday, which is, I think, just what he's been lacking in his races so far this prep. They've all been small fields, tactical races. He's been overracing a touch, but he feels like he's probably coming right for the right race.” Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said the disrupted preparation had made things difficult but believes the horse is now nearing peak fitness. “It's been frustrating. Missing the run in the Memsie, it's had a bit of a knock-on effect. We had to trial him again, then he went to the Makybe and they crawled, he was keen,” he said. “Then he went to the Feehan and they went flat out from the thousand [metres]. He had to work into the race to get to them, and then he ran out of tickets the last little bit. But weirdly enough, the two races have possibly married up to have him pretty ripe for Saturday.”

Via Sistina among 13 horses out of Melbourne Cup

There were some big names but no major shocks as 13 horses dropped out of the Melbourne Cup at the second declarations stage on Tuesday, leaving 53 still in contention for the first $10 million running of the race. The 53 remaining declarations represent a slight drop from the 55 still alive at the same stage last year. The 13 horses to exit contention were: Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), Aeliana (Castelvechhio), Kovalica (Ocean Park), Mister Wolfgang (Puccini), Asterix (Tavistock), The Map (Alpine Eagle), Mormona (Morandi), Militarize (Dundeel), Golden Path (Belardo), Bur Dubai (Night Of Thunder), Flying Bandit (Trapeze Artist), Lastotchka (Myboycharlie), and Naval College (Dartmouth). The Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina will instead attempt to defend her Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) crown, while a decision is yet to be made on whether her stable companion Aeliana will head to the same Moonee Valley showpiece or be spelled. The Melbourne Cup third declarations are due by 10:30am (AEDT) on October 27

Legarto ready for Livamol Classic

Legarto (Credit: Race Images)

Ken and Bev Kelso believe their Group 1-winning mare Legarto (Proisir) is ready to fire in Saturday’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Ellerslie following a pleasing piece of work at Matamata on Tuesday. “She worked nicely this morning on the course proper with Quintessa. Vinnie [Colgan, jockey] was quite happy with her work,” Ken Kelso said. Waikato’s wet spring has disrupted Legarto’s preparation, with the mare finishing sixth in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) first-up before improving to fifth in last month’s Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Te Rapa. “We have been playing catch-up with the wet tracks,” Kelso said. “It has been pretty hard going getting the work into them with the conditions that we have had in the Waikato, it has been pretty wet. I thought her first two runs were pass marks. We struck that wet track at Te Rapa when she ran fifth in the Howden and I thought that was an okay run. She will appreciate getting back onto a better track at Ellerslie, so hopefully we are tracking in the right way. Her work this morning indicated that we are on track for a nice run on Saturday.”

Alabama Lass to spell

Meanwhile, the stable’s star sprinter Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) has returned home from her Melbourne preparation, where she finished runner-up in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) before finishing last in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “We think she might have flipped her palate, that’s all we could put it down to,” Kelso said. “Craig [Williams, jockey] said she was travelling really well at the half mile and then at the 600 metres she started to hang and lose her action and he thought something was amiss. We initially thought she may have fibrillated, but her heart seemed okay. All we can put it down to is she might have flipped her soft palate because he said she made a little bit of a noise. But she has trotted up sound and she has been checked out since she has been home and everything seems in order.” Alabama Lass will now spend time in the paddock before targeting the Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Karaka Millions night in January. “We just decided there wasn’t anything around for her until the Railway, so she has gone out for a brief spell and then she will come back and be set for that,” Kelso said. All going to plan, Kelso is keen to return to Australia next year, believing there is still unfinished business following the anticlimactic end to her spring preparation. “I think she is good enough to go back there and have another crack at a Group 1 after running second in the Moir,” he said. “It gives you the confidence to go back. We will just put a line through the run in the Manikato.”

HK: Lo Rider aims to extend perfect start at Happy Valley

The Caspar Fownes-trained Lo Rider (Harzand) took a big step towards confirming his potential with a dazzling first-up win last month, and on Wednesday Caspar Fownes’ four-year-old gelding is aiming to repeat the dose in a quality Class 2 Lei Yue Mun Handicap (1800m) at Happy Valley. An import from Ireland, where he was known as Sharinay and was a two-time winner at Cork and the Curragh for His Highness the Aga Khan IV, Lo Rider displayed plenty of promise throughout his debut seven-run campaign in Hong Kong last season, headlined by a brave fourth behind Cap Ferrat (Snitzel) in last March’s Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin. “He arrived back on Saturday from Conghua. He looks extremely well, very healthy in the coat, and he seems to be a happy horse,” Fownes said. “We’re stretching out an extra 150 (metres) this week, which should be very beneficial for him, you would think, especially after what he did last prep. I hope (he can reach a 100-plus rating). He does a few things wrong, he’s a little bit of a box walker when he comes back here, but we’ve got him to chill out, which is good. Apart from that he’s been really good and he looks very healthy – that’s the main thing, and he’s in a good headspace.”

HK: Romantic Warrior begins another campaign

The Danny Shum-trained Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), who ten top-flight wins including a victory in the 2023 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), trialled on turf on Tuesday before returning next month ahead of his historic shot at securing a fourth consecutive Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). A prolific 18-time winner from 25 starts, Romantic Warrior has now trialled twice ahead of his planned reappearance in BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) on November 23 – a race he has already won in 2022 and 2024. “It was a good trial. He needs the trial anyway. He’s good. We’ll see how he pulls up, but he travelled very strongly and he’s happy. He runs on November 23rd and James McDonald has already confirmed the ride,” Shum said. Stepping sharply from the barriers, Romantic Warrior finished an untested second to Stunning Peach (Wootton Bassett) by a neck in 1m 35.67 over 1600 metres at Sha Tin. Second two starts back in a rip-roaring edition of the Saudi Cup (1800m, dirt) behind Japan’s Forever Young in February at Riyadh, Romantic Warrior is being pointed at a return to Saudi Arabia by Shum. “If those first two races are okay then [we’ll go to] Saudi Arabia. I really want him to win in Saudi – that would be amazing. Hugh [Bowman] gave me a report that he trialled very good and he doesn’t think he needs any more trials. We can give him a turf gallop at Sha Tin,” Shum said. The 2026 Saudi Cup is scheduled to run on February 14 next year.

Group 1 winner Diego Velazquez retires to The National Stud

Diego Velazquez (Credit:  Scoopdyga)

Diego Velazquez, winner of this season’s Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m), has been retired and will take up stud duties at The National Stud in 2026.

Bred by Epona Bloodstock, the son of Frankel (Galileo) was bought by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for 2.5 million guineas at Book 1 of the Tattersalls Yearling Sale.

Diego Velazquez is the 11th and final foal out of the stakes-winning Acclamation (Royal Applause) mare Sweepstake, making him a three-parts brother to Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2400m) scorer Broome and multiple Group winner and Group 1-placed Point Lonsdale, both by Australia (Galileo).

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the colt raced for the duration of his career for Coolmore and partners, but was purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock a few days before he carried the iconic Sangster colours in his career-defining victory in the time-honoured Deauville Group 1 in August.

“A Group 2 winner at 2 and 3 years with a very emotional Group 1 to his name at 4, we’re incredibly proud to offer Diego Velazquez to breeders in 2026,” Sangster, co-owner and syndicate manager, said.

“Diego Velazquez has it all, a superb-looking son of Frankel from a great family, with an attitude to die for, he has all the attributes you need to be a success at stud.”

Anna Kerr, CEO of the National Stud, added: “Diego Velazquez ticks every box for British Breeders – physical, pedigree and performance. The market response has been hugely positive with a lot of enquiries already. This horse will be given every chance to succeed - he will be fully supported by the partners and we will be buying mares for him over the coming months.”

Diego Velazquez was a near five-length winner on his debut at two at the Curragh and followed up with a first Group 2 strike in the Champions Juvenile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Leopardstown.

He began his three-year-old campaign last year with a close-up fourth in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) and bounced back later that term to capture the Meld Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f) and Solonaway Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) both at Leopardstown.

After finishing ninth in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot, Diego Velazquez returned to winning groove with a victory in the Minstrel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh, which he backed up with his victory over 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Notable Speech (Dubawi) in the Prix Jacques le Marois.

Diego Velazquez fee will be announced in due course.

Lot 595: Harry Angel ex Autumn Magic colt (Credit: Tattersalls )

Australian interest was strong on the opening day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on Monday, with John Foote Bloodstock partnering with some of Australia’s leading trainers to secure three promising yearlings, writes Tayla Dyke.

Lot 595, a colt by Darley shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel), was knocked down to Foote and recent Group 1-winning trainer Mick Price Racing for 160,000gns. Consigned by Norris Bloodstock, the colt is out of the unraced Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) mare Autumn Magic, making him a brother to stakes-placed Harry’s Girl (Harry Angel).

Later in the session, Lindsay Park Racing joined forces with Foote to purchase two youngsters. The first, Lot 620, a Lope De Vega (Shamardal) colt from the Kellsgrange Stud draft, cost 160,000gns.

Out of dual Group 3-placed mare Bikini Babe (Montjeu), the colt is a brother to Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner La Barrosa (Lope De Vega) and a half-brother to Listed placegetter Itsy Bitsy (Belardo). Further back, his pedigree includes Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Scottish (Teofilo).

Foote and Lindsay Park later secured Lot 650, a Churchill (Galileo) filly from the Highclere Stud draft, for 48,000gns. She is the second foal out of dual-winning Iffraaj (Zafonic) mare Capparis. Her second dam, Karen’s Caper (War Chant), was a triple Group 3 winner and Group 1 placegetter who has produced a Group 3 winner and two other stakes performers.

Amo Racing recruitment drive continues as Starman filly shines at 525,000gns

Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing continued to invest heavily as the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale moved onto Book 2. After nearly ten and a half hours of selling at Park Paddocks on Monday, the outfit's name appeared on the docket of nine lots with a market value of 2.135 million guineas.

The haul included the day’s most expensive signing, the Starman filly out of Emirates Empress who fetched 525,000gns when presented by Tally-Ho Stud. Joorabchian delegated media duties to Amo’s in-house trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy, who is overseeing the string based at Freemason Lodge Stables just up the road from the sales ring.

“She was my pick of the sale,” said Philippart de Foy. “She’s from a very good damside. She’s a very easygoing filly, very racy, and Starman can do no wrong, he had more winners again today, so I’m delighted to get this filly. I’ve been very keen on her since the start of the day.”

The filly is the first foal out of the mare, whose siblings include the Group 2 winners Outbox and Royal Champion. In turn, they are out of Emirates Queen, a Street Cry half-sister to Dubawi who won the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks. Emirates Empress joined the Tally-Ho broodmare band at a cost of just 30,000gns in 2022.

The filly was one of four lots by Starman that were added to the Amo ranks on Monday.

“I don’t think it’s only Amo, lots of people are big on Starman,” said Philippart de Foy. “He makes a lot of sense and his stock look like horses that will keep improving as older horses. They’re not just small, racy two-year-olds, they look like they have size and scope. He’s made a very strong start.”

The trainer is in the thick of his first sales season since taking over the Amo Racing string based at Freemason Lodge. Asked how he has found working the sales alongside Joorabchian and his team, Philippart de Foy said: “It’s a very exciting time. From Deauville in August, Keeneland in September and then Book 1 last week, we’ve picked up some lovely horses by top stallions and from very good pedigrees. I’m looking forward to next year.”

Having suggested Philippart de Foy field the press’s questions, Joorabchian proceeded to tease the trainer by listening in as he gave his answers. When Philippart de Foy was asked if he had got used to working with his new employer, he smiled, shook his head and said: “You never get used to him!”

Earlier in the day Justin Casse signed for a 360,000gns son of Starman on Amo’s behalf. The colt is out of Deep Impression and was offered by Pier House Stud. Casse has been among those to have already enjoyed success with the stallion's progeny having bought Group 3 Tyros Stakes scorer North Coast for John Oxley.

“I bought him in partnership with Amo to go to Joseph O’Brien,” said Casse. “The stallion has been good to me so far, and to Joseph. He’s had a couple of Graded stakes winners by the stallion, one of which I bought.

“Hopefully we can replicate that success. This colt was a standout on the day for me. This colt might’ve walked a little better than North Coast, this horse has a really good reach to him.”

While agents Alex Elliott and Ben McElroy have been at the forefront of Amo’s buying at Tattersalls, Casse signed for two lots on the operation’s behalf at a cost of $1,350,000 during the Keeneland September Sale.

“I bought two horses for Amo in America,” he added. “We’re working individually but, if we align on the same horse, we try not to bid against each other.”

Teenager pinhookers in clover

The next generation was to the fore at Tattersalls on Monday, and not just the thoroughbred variety.

Friends Fionn White and Jack and Max Galway, a group boasting a cumulative age of just 46, pulled off the sort of pinhooking success that would have even the most seasoned campaigners going weak at the knees.

The teenage triumvirate were behind the Minzaal filly out of Chiclet who went from €85,000 Goffs November foal pinhook to 450,000gns market leader on day one of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Karl and Kelly Burke landed the six-figure bid when the filly was presented by Baroda Stud.

The page has received a notable enhancement in the intervening months, as the filly is closely related to the Jessica Harrington-trained Saratoga Special. She won this year’s Listed Land O'Burns Stakes in the colours of Alpha Racing, which was set up by Jack (17) and Max’s (13) father, well-known industry face and Punchestown racing manager Richie Galway.

“I didn’t expect it at all, I can’t get over it, I can’t even put it into words really,” said a remarkably relaxed White, 16. “Me, Jack and Max were going around the foal sales together last year. Jack and Max had to go back to school but because I had the year off for TY [transition year] I was working for Baroda.

“I really liked her so I followed her in. I rang Richie before I went in and asked him how Saratoga Special was getting on and he said ‘She’s a nice horse who should do well next year.’ She went on to win a Listed race, which always helps. We bought her off David Byrne but obviously we didn’t expect anything like this at all.”

The mighty result is not the first taste of pinhooking success for White, whose family own Clunemore Lodge Stud in Kildare. Last year’s renewal of Book 1 saw him turn a €36,000 son of Gleneagles into a 205,000gns yearling who was knocked down to agent Will Douglass.

Asked what he’d be doing with Monday’s windfall, White said: “I’ll be back at the foal sales this year. I won’t be buying too much because I’ve my leaving cert next year, but I’ll try my best.”

After signing the docket, Karl Burke said: “She’s a lovely filly, we really liked her and she vetted well so I’m delighted to get her. We’ve got a couple of Minzaals now and he’s a sire we really like.

“Jim Crowley used to ride him and he said he was a great laid-back horse, and he recommended we have a look at his offspring a good few months ago. I’ve been impressed by them. It was a lot of money but hopefully she can run. She’ll certainly be a two-year-old anyway. She’s been bought for an owner in the yard.”

This was far from the first big result for Shadwell’s Derrinstown Stud resident Minzaal. His six Book 1 lots averaged 189,165gns, headed by the half-sister to Asymmetric and Mill Stream who fetched 550,000gns from Amo Racing.

The son of Mehmas also supplied the top lot at this year’s Doncaster Premier Sale, with Shadwell going to £190,000 for a filly out of the Listed winner Hateya. His debut crop was bred at a fee of €15,000.
