A select catalogue of 166 two-year-olds will come under the hammer at Riverside Stables on Thursday for the 2025 Inglis Ready2Race Sale, with strong buyer interest and a polished vendor line-up shaping what is expected to be a good edition of the auction.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch described this year’s offering as the company’s most accomplished to date, both in terms of quality and intent.

“It's definitively the best catalogue we've put together for the sale,” Hutch told ANZ News.

“Just in terms of the profile of the horses, more than 80 per cent have been sourced specifically for the sale from yearling or weanling sales. It's not made up of horses that were passed in as yearlings or weanlings, or horses that were attained because they couldn't make sales. It is full of horses specifically identified with a view to coming to this sale.

What's On

“And in terms of the vendors, the buyers and our team, it's the best prepared we've been for a sale of this kind, certainly in my time here, and likely ever. I'm hopeful we've got everything in place for the sale to be as good as it can be.”

Last year’s edition produced a record top lot of $1 million and an average of $164,289, but a final clearance rate of 64.2 per cent left room for improvement. With strong international engagement this year, Hutch is hopeful of striking a more balanced outcome between clearance and returns.

“We facilitate the market, we don't make it but certainly on the evidence of inspections, interest is good,” Hutch said. “There seems to be encouraging levels of domestic interest, international interest is very strong from Hong Kong, China, Malaysia in particular.

“We’re very much beholden to the subjective whims of people…we can't know what people are going to bid, but for those shopping at each level of the market, it feels like there are plenty of horses there to satisfy that demand and it feels like there's good demand in each section of the market. So we really do want to try and clear. We cleared 62 per cent at the end of the day last year, which was disappointing.

“We really want to try and do significantly better than that, while at the same time holding our metrics. And if we can do that, we'll be pleased.”

As the two-year-old market continues to mature in Australia, Inglis remains intent on strengthening its foothold in the space.

“Certainly in terms of the Inglis sale, we haven't stopped building momentum this year, we haven't paid the market lip service,” Hutch said. “We've actually talked the talk and walked the walk. We’ve spent money, backing our vendors, developing the concept over an extended period of time, this hasn't been a flippant move on our part.

“This is something Inglis has been investing in for more than ten years and we’re encouraged by the signs that we've seen from it, even in terms of the sale last year, already a number of high class three-year-olds in Australia who've emerged from last year's sales. Signature Scent and Rosberg, two particularly good horses, and a number of others.

“We see this sale taking an ever increasing significance in the context of our sales calendar and we're determined to work with vendors and buyers to try and facilitate that progression, and hopefully the next step is Thursday.”

Ryan confident in balanced draft

Blake Ryan’s draft topped the 2023 Ready2Race Sale by aggregate ($2,080,500) and sold the top lot that year in the form of a Capitalist (Written Tycoon) colt who was bought as a yearling at the Classic sale for $70,000 before making $400,000 when selling to Hong Kong.

Last year his operation sold eight of its 12 offered lots for a total of $951,000, with a top lot of $550,000, and Ryan told ANZ News he was encouraged by the level of engagement throughout inspections this week.

“Inspections have been consistently steady, there’s been a good flow of people through,” he said.

“Inglis have done a good job in getting a wide range of buyers here and good numbers. I actually think the feel around the place is better than last year - I’ve been happy all week. The right people seem to be here too, so we’re looking forward to Thursday. If the market is still there, the right people are here and we can sell a horse.”

Ryan’s 13-strong diverse draft includes horses by 11 different sires both emerging and established, which was a conscious decision in order to meet all levels of the buying bench.

“We always try to do that every year, have a good mix of the proven and the new and try to give people a horse at every level,” he said.

“It’s all well and good trying to sell top lots but you’ve also got to provide for your lower buying bench, so we’ve got 13 horses here by 11 different stallions, colts, geldings, we’ve even got a filly to sell, so very pleased with how they’ve come up and they have been parading well all week, presenting themselves well. Fingers crossed we can find them all a home.”

Lot 80: Toronado ex Nags To Riches colt (Credit: Inglis)

Among Ryan’s chief lots is Lot 80, a chestnut colt by Toronado (High Chaparral) out of the Listed-placed winning Written Tycoon mare Nags To Riches, a $180,000 Gold Coast yearling purchase, who breezed a slick 10.57 on the course proper at Warwick Farm.

“He’s a standout for sure. He’s a lovely colt with good leg and good rein,” Ryan said. “He’s the first foal out of a stakes-performed mare by a stallion that works everywhere and he’s going to keep developing as he gets older. I’m sure he’ll make a nice racehorse.”

Added intrigue comes via a colt and a filly by first season-sire Wild Ruler (Snitzel) who both boast significant pedigree updates courtesy of Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) heroine Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Northwood Plume Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner She’s Bulletproof (Shooting To Win) respectively.

“The Wild Ruler colt [Lot 92] is a beauty, he’s got a ripping pedigree on him underneath and Charm Stone has jumped into that pedigree over the last 18 months [through the second dam] ,” Ryan said.

“Even the little Wild Ruler filly [Lot 76] – her half-sister [Cosmic Vixen] had her first start on Tuesday at Ballarat and won on debut, and She’s Bulletproof, who’s in the third dam, won the Northwood Plume Stakes last Saturday at Caulfield.

“We’ve got active pedigrees for all sorts of levels and budgets and hopefully we can get them all sold on Thursday.”

Ryan also has the only Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) in the sale in Lot 142, a colt out of winning Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Tennessee Gold. The youngster realised $130,000 at the Gold Coast in January to the bid of JCG Thoroughbreds and Andy Williams.

“He’s a lovely colt with a good attitude, I’d say he’s probably six to 12 months away which is good because you want to sell horses that are going to go on and improve,” Ryan said. “He is a really clean moving horse, he vets really well so here’s hoping he can be a standout as well.”

Lot 76: Wild Ruler ex Miss Vixen filly (Credit: Inglis)

Ryan was happy with the way his draft breezed up and explained that his focus is on how the horses go about it and maintaining their mental balance so that they can slot right into training.

“I’ve evolved myself as a preparer, I think I’ve been doing it eight years now and I definitely do things a lot differently to when I started,” he said.

“I’m more so about having them travel well and use their action. The clock is almost insignificant to me, I think if you’ve educated them properly the clock will take care of itself. The main thing is to show the horse off, and to be able to have a horse that maintains his brain.

“The main thing to grow these sales is getting trainers to want to come back and buy from you again after these horses go to them. Repeat business is the key. We put them all on the grass because that’s what we race on and I’m happy with the way they breezed.”

Ryan said this year’s consignment features a healthy mix, with some retained by their breeders specifically for the Ready2Race format and others sourced with clients for the sale.

The approach, he explained, reflects a focus on matching horses to the right environment and sourcing quality types that will appeal to buyers across different markets.

“I think there’s always a market for a nice horse,” he said. “The lower end at any level – yearling, our level and even mares now with the way the market’s going in somewhat difficult times – is always the harder end.

“But I find a good horse will always sell itself; the key is just trying to source the right horses and doing the right thing by them, and bringing the product people want to buy. If you do that, the rest just takes care of itself.”

Fast breezes fuel confidence for Burnet’s DSB Thoroughbreds

Back with its third draft at the Ready2Run sale is Darrell Burnet’s DSB Thoroughbreds who are set to offer five lots, all of whom broke 11 seconds for their 200-metre breeze up on the course proper at Warwick Farm.

Their 2024 draft averaged $203,333 across three lots, topped by a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt who made $420,000 to the bid of Hong Kong trainer Caspar Fownes after being sourced for $75,000 at Inglis Premier.

Lot 178: Wooded ex Analyzing colt (Credit: Inglis)

Burnet, who trains out of Wagga, reported increased interest across his draft this year, fuelling a positive outlook ahead of Thursday’s auction.

“Compared to previous years, I think across the first few days we’ve had a lot of inspections, a lot of second views and interest, so the general feeling is pretty good,” he told ANZ News.

“The horses are taking it good, all have been parading well and they’ve all been out enough times. I’m not too stressed because I think they all have realistic reserves, so if the buyers are there my draft will hopefully be well received by the market.”

The draft features a trio of colts by emerging young sires Wooded (Wootton Bassett), Hanseatic (Street Boss) and Pinatubo (Shamardal) – each a targeted pinhook purchased with this sale in mind.

Heading the trio is Lot 178, a Wooded colt secured for $160,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Out of the placed Helmet (Exceed And Excel) mare Analyzing – a three-quarter sister to dual stakes winner Excelorada – he boasts a pedigree that has already produced two winners from as many runners.

The Hanseatic colt (Lot 168) was a $40,000 Inglis Classic buy, out of the Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) mare Zanibar, a winning sister to dual French Listed scorer Enlighted.

Rounding out the group is Lot 126, a Pinatubo colt from Shalfah (Fastnet Rock), a sister to Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Rothesay and to the dam of McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Fast Witness (Star Witness). A $30,000 Classic purchase, he posted the best breeze up time of the draft (10.62).

Burnet noted that there was little separating them at the breeze ups, all colts stretching out strongly and showcasing their natural ability.

“There wasn’t much between them – there’s less than 0.2 seconds between the draft, so it all comes down to what the buyers want,” he said.

“I like my horses coming into the breeze probably not flat out at the 200 metres, they all worked through the line really nicely so you could argue a lot went quicker but I just like showcasing them with their natural ability and where they’re at.

Lot 126: Pinatubo ex Shalfah colt (Credit: Inglis)

“I think they’ve all done themselves justice.”

DSB also offers lots by proven sires All Too Hard (Casino Prince) – Lot 154 – and Hellbent (I Am Invincible) – Lot 211 – both specifically earmarked for Thursday’s sale having skipped the yearling market.

“The All Too Hard is a homebred of Miranda Park’s, and just with how All Too Hards go in Hong Kong, he skipped all the yearling sales to solely concentrate on this,” Burnet said.

“He came to me in January to start his education nice and early, and the Hellbent fits the mould for this sale as well. The stallion is doing a good job, and not an expensive weanling purchase [$26,000] so hopefully they will both find a home.”

With activity from both local and international buyers, Burnet is confident his well-rounded draft will appeal to a wide cross-section of the market.

“There’s domestic trainers here, syndicators, obviously Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and I feel like each horse would fit into different markets – it all depends what the buyers are looking for,” he said. “There’s something for everyone.”

Just in his sixth year of operating DSB Thoroughbreds, Burnet has enjoyed plenty of pinhooking success already, also turning $25,000 Brutal (O’Reilly) colt In And Out into a $140,000 two-year-old at the 2023 Ready2Run Sale, while $85,000 All Too Hard colt Rotagilla made $100,000 on the same day.

“The past two years have been really good for me selling my own pinhooks,” he said.

“Last year’s draft I don’t think anyone’s raced out of yet, but two years ago I sold a Brutal called In And Out, he won at Kembla the other day and was city placed just last week at Randwick.

“The All Too Hard we purchased for $85,000 and sold for $100,000, he’s won on a Wednesday and on Saturday as well, winning over $200,000.

“They were my first two pinhooks and as much as it gives me satisfaction to see that, it also shows us, if that’s our first year, we’re on the right lines.

“We’ve selected the horses at the yearling sales, one was from Classics and one HTBA, then we’ve prepped, breezed and sold – for them to go on and get the results we envisaged six months prior is very rewarding.”

Formlines key for Baystone

Dean Harvey’s Baystone enjoyed a brilliant result at the sale 12 months ago when a filly by Written Tycoon realised $1 million and the operation will offer 11 two-year-olds (after withdrawals) this year, including three fillies.

Commenting on the number of fillies he will offer, Harvey said: “I just think it's a really good part of the market. Trying to buy fillies off the track is very, very hard and if we can bring some fillies that are well bred and well credentialed, I think there's a place in the market.”

This year’s offering includes a daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) out of the winning Fastnet Rock mare Ordos Honor, who not only won her Flemington trial, but, rather unconventionally, will be set for sale having finished a solid fifth in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Despite missing out on black type, Harvey still has faith the filly will improve off the back of her effort in the Listed contest.

“I’ve still got full faith in her,” he said. “She raced with her head on the side the whole way. They'd upgraded the track to a three from a four, I think she felt the ground. I'd be very surprised if she doesn't pull up shin sore.

“Her last 50 was good, she ran through the line well. But so you know, she's a talented filly, today just wasn't her day. I've got full faith we'll get black type down the track somewhere.”

She was pinhooked for $200,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year and clocked 10.81 in her Wangaratta breeze.

The filly is bred on the same cross Zoustar / Fastnet Rock (Danehill) that has produced eight stakes winners including Group 1-winning trio Climbing Star, Zougotcha and Joliestar, who will shoot for Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) glory on Saturday.

Now named Rachini, the filly will be offered as Lot 89.

Lot 48: Satono Aladdin ex Kentucky May colt (Credit: Inglis)

She is joined in the draft by another daughter of Widden’s reigning champion sire in Lot 96. A $230,000 purchase for Malua Racing and Bayston at the Inglis Premier sale earlier this year, the youngster is a out of the winning mare Perfect Gem (Iffraaj), herself a sister to Listed scorer Frencee. The pair are in turn out of New Zealand Group 1 winner Calveen (Canny Lad).

The trifecta of fillies is completed by Lot 8, a daughter of Farnan, who was purchased by Baystone, Malua and Matt Houldsworth for $260,000 at the Easter sale. Out of the winning mare Enood (Deep Impact), the youngster hails from the family of multiple Group 1 winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice).

Baystone will also offer a colt by Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) (Lot 48), who goes through the ring having landed a hot Flemington trial, while the farm will also consign a colt by Pinatubo (Shamardal) (Lot 155) out of Group 3 winner Vain Queen (Artie Schiller).

Selling gets underway at Riverside Stables at 12pm (AEDT).

First stakes winner for Sword Of State as Torture caps off brilliant day for Go Bloodstock

Cambridge Stud’s first-season sire Sword Of State (Snitzel) got his stallion career off to a brilliant start when he chalked up his first individual stakes winner courtesy Torture’s dominant display in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Trained by Lindsay Park, the juvenile filly showed talent in spades to finish 0.5 lengths ahead of her well-related stable companion Free Flying, who is by Sword Of State’s sire, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). The Ciaron Maher-trained Toronado Valley (Too Darn Hot) finished the same distance away in third.

The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin-trained Rachini (Zoustar), who will be offered as Lot 89 at the Inglis Ready2Run Sale on Thursday. She will be set for sale by Baystone Farm who pinhooked the filly for $200,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year.

Ben Hayes said he was not expecting Torture to be so early.

“It was nice to run one-two in the race, and to get some black type with a filly is very important,” he said.

“I thought she won very well. She loomed into it and hit the front and did everything right today, so it’s a big thrill for the whole team. Two-year-olds are something that we really enjoy doing, and coming out and winning the first two-year-old stakes race of the season is a big thrill.

“She is well-bred and now a stakes winner, so there are a couple of big ticks there and she is a beautiful looking horse with much more improvement to come, which is exciting.”

Bred and co-owned by Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Torture is a half-sister to Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ruthless Dame (Tavistock), with the pair out of the stakes-placed Keeper (Danehill) mare Ruthless Lady. Ruthless Dame was bought by Kasumi Yoshida for $2 million at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale last year.

Torture was raised and sold by Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore, with Lindsay Park and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock going to NZ$250,000 to secure the filly at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sale earlier this year.

“For her to come out and win The Debutant, probably wasn’t what we were thinking when we bought her,” Hayes said of the filly, who was an October 20 born foal.

“But she just kept improving and kept showing us that she could get there. Her trial leading up was good and we thought why not.

“She’s a stakes winner now, so maybe the Blue Diamond or something like that would be right up her alley.”

Winning rider Ethan Brown said the filly had come on in leaps and bounds from a jumpout at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

“My feedback after that trial here at Caulfield was that she probably lacked a bit of substance, but she is very professional and that will take her a long way,” Brown said.

“Funnily enough, she feels like she has strengthened again from that trial, they put the winkers on, which proved to be the winning move. The boys are such terrific trainers in general but are especially good with a young horse.

“From that gate, I gave her a squeeze to get her into the bridle, she lobbed into a beautiful position, and she got up on the bit.

“I just had to dodge heels there for a bit coming around the corner, but she really flowed into it well.

“I thought we hit the front a bit soon, but luckily those winkers were on, she kept her focus and was strong through the line.”

With Wednesday’s victory, Torture became the first individual winner for Sword Of State, who has been represented by one other runner.

The stallion’s first crop of yearlings were all the rage at the sales across Australasia earlier this year and Wednesday’s result will be welcome for buyers who put their faith and money on the line to snare his progeny.

Sword Of State (Credit: Cambridge Stud)

In New Zealand, 33 of Sword Of State’s yearlings realised NZ$4,540,300, selling for an average of NZ$137,584, headed by a colt who sold to Mulberry Racing for NZ$540,000. Meanwhile, in Australia, the stallion’s eight yearlings to sell at public auction made $1,690,000, with a recorded average of $211,250.

In fact, such was the clear message from the buying benches, Cambridge Stud responded by increasing the stallion’s fee from $15,000 to $20,000 (all fees plus GST) for the 2025 season.

Torture is raced by a syndicate headed by passionate Richmond supporter John O'Neill and sports silks featuring the famed yellow and black.

The Hayes team have saddled the first two winners of Victorian two-year-old races after colt Eurocanto (Per Incanto) won the Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) earlier this month.

Torture’s victory continues a great run of form for breeder Sir Owen Glenn who bred last Saturday’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Transatlantic (Sntizel).

“Fittingly, he bred this filly’s Group 1-winning sire Sword Of State and was keen to support him,” Curraghmore’s Gordon Cunningham said.

“He is a big supporter of our industry, and he will get great satisfaction from that win. He happily remained in the ownership after she was purchased by Lindsay Park and the mare has a lovely yearling filly by Proisir.”

Wootton Verni takes Coongy Cup

Later on in the Caulfield card, Wootton Verni (5 g Wootton Bassett - Vernie by Kendargent) - another co-owned by Sir Owen Glenn - broke his duck in Australia when he took out the Coongy Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m).

Wootton Verni came to Australia late last year to join the Chris Waller stable with Wednesday's victory in the 2000m contest coming at his sixth start in his new country.

Wootton Verni (right) (Credit: Racing Photos)

After having his first four starts in Sydney for Waller, Wootton Verni was sent to the champion trainer's Melbourne base to continue his campaign.

After finishing fourth at Sandown over 1800 metres on September 27, Wootton Verni relished the rise in trip on Wednesday to register a strong win.

Sent out the $3.80 favourite under Damian Lane, Wootton Verni scored a 0.5-length win from Casino Seventeen (Casino Prince) with Future History (Showcasing) a further 2.7 lengths away third.

Lizzie Collett, representing the Waller stable, said Wootton Verni was not the easiest horse to deal with in the stable but it was pleasing to see him finally break through.

Wootton Verni would not settle early in the race but had enough fight to score at the end of the 2000-metre trip.

"He got a good clear run and was able to use his ability, but in the first 400 metres, I was saying relax," Collett said.

"Luckily, he had enough fuel left at the end, so it shows he's a quality horse."

Wootton Verdi had raced in blinkers at Sandown, but the Waller stable opted to swap those for winkers on Wednesday.

Lane said Wootton Verdi had over-raced for the majority of the journey.

"His form before he came to Australia was very good, but it's taken a little bit for him to put it together here, but he's building the right way," Lane said.

"I think he needed a confidence win and hopefully that was it for him.

"I was in the right spot, but he didn't really switch off for me. I think the winkers switched him on, but with a few more goes in them, he might relax a bit better further on.

"I think they bought him for bigger targets than this race and he's building in the right way."

Bred by T De La Heronniere and Salabi Racing, Wootton Verni adds this win to his victory in the Prix Greffulhe (Gr 3, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud in May 2024.

First for Sword Of State

Cambridge Stud’s first-season stallion Sword Of State (Snitzel) sired his first individual and first stakes-level winner on Wednesday when juvenile filly Torture (2 f ex Ruthless Lady, by Keeper) took out the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield. The filly was a $250,000 purchase for her trainers, Lindsay Park Racing, with Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock from Curraghmore’s 2025 NZB Karaka National Yearling Sale draft. Bred by Go Bloodstock Australia, the filly is the eighth foal and fifth winner out of Ruthless Lady (Keeper), who has also produced Group 1-winning mare Ruthless Dame (Tavistock). Torture’s second dam is Group 2 winner Lady Dehere (Dehere), who has produced three stakes winners in Oracy (Zabeel), The Lady (Stravinsky) and Lady Moral (Power). Sword Of State stands at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand for an increased fee of $20,000 (plus GST).

Half Yours draws inside gate

Half Yours (Credit: Sportpix)

Half Yours (St Jean) has drawn barrier two for Saturday’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), a result the Tony and Calvin McEvoy team say will allow the stayer to settle and obtain an economical run. "It's a good draw," said Calvin. "These are high pressure contests, and we've watched the replays, and the pressure comes on a long way out. Drawing inside with a horse that can hold a spot is going to mean he's going to get a rest for the first half of the race which is so important. We know he can absorb pressure and we couldn't be any happier with the barrier." Half Yours entered Caulfield Cup calculations after winning the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m) in July. Originally pencilled in for a Sydney campaign, the gelding was redirected to Melbourne after finishing fifth over 1500 metres at Rosehill on August 30. Victory in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield on September 20 secured him a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption. He then finished fourth in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on October 4, further boosting his Caulfield Cup credentials. "He's been up and racing for a long time, but he's probably one of the fittest horses with the miles he's got in his legs," McEvoy said. "His Turnbull run was great, he did a little bit of work on the course proper at Flemington yesterday and worked beautifully.”

Internationals set for Caulfield Cup

Absurde (Fastnet Rock) is in Melbourne for a third time, but he will break new ground this weekend and race at Caulfield for the first time when he lines up from the inside barrier in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday. David Casey, assistant trainer to Willie Mullins responsible for Absurde’s Melbourne preparation, said the inside barrier would allow the horse to relax. "Ideally, we wanted somewhere around five, but this way he will be able to relax and hopefully they will go a good gallop," Casey said.

Vauban ‘thriving’ ahead of Caulfield showdown

Gai Waterhouse believes Vauban’s (Galiway) barrier draw of 13 gives him a great chance in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup. The French import was last seen finishing strongly to place fifth in the Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), a performance Waterhouse believes sets him up perfectly for the Caulfield showpiece this weekend. “He's thriving, he's done very well,” said Waterhouse, who trains in partnership with Adrian Bott. “He got a long way back in the Metropolitan and chased the winner home. He's really acclimatised to Melbourne, he loves the track, loves the way of going, he's a very versatile gelding. [The draw] means we can win it. We will be out of harm's way."

Valiant King to take Caulfield Cup shot

Owner Ozzie Kheir has decided to run Valiant King (Roaring Lion) in this weekend’s Caulfield Cup. The dominant last-start winner at Flemington wasn’t expected to take his place in the 2400-metre feature, with Ozzie Kheir revealing on Wednesday connections had opted to chance their arm with the talented stayer this weekend. “If he can produce his last start run, I think he’ll be hard to beat,” the prominent owner told Gareth Hall on SEN Track’s Giddy Up program. “But he’s got to do it again. If he does it again, I think he’ll go close.” Valiant King, who finished sixth in the 2023 Caulfield Cup, will carry just 52kgs on Saturday. Kheir also confirmed Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) would head to the Cox Plate.

Moira retired ahead of Caulfield Cup

Moira (Ghostzapper) will not take her place in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday after her trainer Chris Waller confirmed on Wednesday she had been retired. The announcement came just hours before the Cup’s barrier draw, with owners Yulong electing to call time on the multiple Group 1-winning mare’s career. “Moira is obviously a world-class mare and while she hasn't yet quite reached those same heights here in Australia, her performance earlier in the prep gave us a glimpse of her class,” Waller said. “We simply feel that she is not racing at her absolute best right now and with her extraordinary resume, she will be an outstanding broodmare, a real asset to the Australian breeding industry. In 2024 she captured the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar. Earlier in her career, she won the Queen's Plate in record time, becoming only the 38th filly ever to win that race. She also took out the Woodbine Oaks and claimed graded wins such as the Canadian Stakes and Beverly D. Stakes. Credit and thanks must go to her previous trainer, Kevin Attard, who trained her impeccably and kept her in great condition. It's fantastic to see international-class horses coming into Australia; it clearly lifts our breeding pool and bloodlines. We very much look forward to seeing her progeny develop and race in the years to come.”

Briasa primed for Everest challenge

Team Hawkes’ star sprinter Briasa (Smart Missile) heads into Saturday’s The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick in peak order, with jockey Tyler Schiller confident the grey has the right credentials to take on the world’s best. A strong winner of the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) two weeks ago, Briasa has continued to please his connections ahead of his biggest test yet. “Other than getting beaten first-up, which is never great, it’s good that he bounced back with a great performance in sharp time,’’ Schiller said. “It was a personal best and I think he’s still got more to come. But he’s definitely going to have to pull out something exceptional to beat a field like that. He’s a winner, he’s never going to win by a big margin because once the job’s done he knows it. It’s going to be a great race, I think we can win it.” Briasa will jump from barrier ten in the $20 million contest.

Baker backing Overpass for Everest

Bjorn Baker is hoping Overpass (Vancouver), the $75,000 gelding who has become a stable stalwart, can produce the race of his life in The Everest on Saturday at Randwick. It will be Overpass’ fourth appearance on Everest day and his third in the race, having finished sixth in 2022 and tenth in 2023. Overpass has won ten of his 32 starts, including back-to-back Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in Perth. “He puts himself up on speed and he’s run so many great races,” he said. “Early days I thought he was just a horse. He’d trialled okay, we took him out to Orange to win. Even at Orange he only just won. He’s been around since he was a two-year-old, it seems like he’s been around forever but he’s only a seven-year-old.” Following the barrier draw, Overpass will tackle the Everest first-up for the first time. Baker said the gelding has had the preparation he wanted to run a big race. “In his first Everest we tried to get into the Everest, if you go back in time you’d love him to be fresh up,” he said. “His two best runs at Randwick were in the Sydney Stakes last year and in the autumn in the TJ Smith [close second to Briasa]. Both runs were fantastic. I believe he is going as well as those two days and he’s going to need to. He’s capable of running a very high rating race and if he can do that he’s not out of it. He’s got that natural speed, he'll be fast, we’ll look to be in the first three and ideally we won’t cover ground.”

Pride Of Jenni ready for King Charles

Ciaron Maher is optimistic crowd favourite Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) can secure back-to-back wins for the first time in almost two years when she returns to Sydney for the first time in 12 months to contest Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m) at Randwick. Pride Of Jenni resumed with a win in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 26, convincing Maher she had bounced back from a forgettable trip to Queensland earlier in the year. "I was a bit dubious first-up because she was a bit heavier than she'd ever been, but she ran just as good and she seems to be in that similar sort of spot," Maher said. "Things have to go right [with her] and Queensland wasn't as smooth as what I would have liked. There's no in-between, you're either fighting out the finish or you are out the back. That's how those style of horses are, there's no there's no in-between. But I do think she's in a good order. She's in a good spot."

Regal Award stuns at Caulfield

Phil Stokes’ Regal Award (Ole Kirk) recorded his second career victory in commanding fashion when putting a clear margin between himself and his rivals over a mile. Ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, the Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) gelding worked a touch early before settling in front, and, despite setting a solid tempo into the turn, he kicked again to extend his advantage to the line. Regal Award had been nominated for the Caulfield Guineas (gr 1, 1600m) but was not accepted, and while Stokes regrets missing the opportunity, he is confident the exciting three-year-old has plenty more to offer. "We've always known he's had serious ability, he's a very raw horse," Stokes said. "I think those gear [swaps] changed things for him a bit today, put the D-bit on and the earmuffs. He stepped slow, but Lachie was able to get across and control it. He gave a huge kick and won by a big margin." Asked whether Regal Award could have been competitive in the Guineas, Stokes replied: "We won't think about that."

Surfin' Bird secures third consecutive win

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s progressive filly Surfin' Bird (The Autumn Sun) made it three wins in a row and fourth overall with an impressive performance in a Benchmark 70 (1440m) at Caulfield on Wednesday, flying clear of her rivals under Blake Shinn despite a tough run. A First Light Racing-owned daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), Surfin' Bird had trialled strongly between runs and her fitness was evident as she looped the field from a three-wide midfield position, never looking like losing. She is now being targeted at the HKJC Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on Melbourne Cup day, with Shinn confident she can handle the step up in class, as well as similar assignments over further. "We've got quite a big opinion of her, full credit to Gai and her team," Shinn said. "She had to do it the hard way but we felt from the draw, just get her into a good rhythm, keep her balanced and come into the race at the right time, and hopefully her class and staying ability will come to the fore. Jett Stanley, who should have been riding her today but had an injury, he's done a lot of work on her… my thoughts are with him, because he deserved this opportunity today."

Chicama breaks maiden for Joe Pride

Chicama, a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) half-brother to multiple Group 1-winning mare Shoals (Fastnet Rock), got off the mark when he took out a handicap over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Having his first start for Joe Pride, the colt defeated Augusta National (Zoustar) by 0.3 lengths to claim his first victory from five starts. There was another 1.5 lengths back to Aladdin’s Girl (Satono Aladdin) in third. Yeah, that was good,” Pride said post-race. “And he needed to do that here today. He's been a colt who's obviously very well bred; he was an expensive horse and he's come to the stable as a new acquisition for us. He came in good order, but we had a little bit to work on in terms of his temperament, and I think he's getting there. Nice win from him today. I'd be interested to hear what Nash (Rawiller) says about him. He's a pretty laid-back customer, but I think eventually that's going to play into his hands. But he's just got to learn a little bit about race craft, and when he does, he's going to keep improving.” Bred by Arrowfield and GSA Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Chicama was purchased for $1.35 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale by China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy. He is the seventh winner from seven to race out of The Broken Shore (Hussonet), herself a half-sister to champion sire Redoute’s Choice and Group 1 winner Manhattan Rain (Encosta de Lago). As well as Shoals, Chicama is also a half-brother to Listed winner and Caulfield Guineas-placed Groundswell (Fastnet Rock).

Nitro produces extraordinary performance at Warwick Farm

The Peter Snowden-trained Nitro (Deep Field) produced a mind-blowing performance, soaring from the back of the field to break his maiden at the first attempt over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The Darby Racing-owned gelding motored home to beat Peace Bird (Hellbent) by 0.1 lengths. “I was a little bit worried today. He did a few things wrong and they did go along quick, and I thought there's a chance you'll pick them up as he's very good late. When he started getting those runs he was getting I thought it was a great chance to do what he did… and he did it,” said Snowden. “He’ll get a lot further and he’s very genuine. We'll just go through the grades now and get him a bit more race savvy, and I'm sure there's a good race in him.” Bred and offered for sale by Gilgai Farm, Nitro is the second foal and second winner from Ocean Jewel (Ocean Park), whose third foal by Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) sold to Yulong at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling for $1.15 million.

Globe’s connections stump up $200,000 late fee for Cox Plate

Globe (Charm Spirit) will run in this year's Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) after connections parted with $200,000 for the race's late-entry fee on Wednesday. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding rocketed into Cox Plate contention following his upset win in last Saturday's Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield. And after spending a couple of days mulling whether to head to the race or not, Racing Victoria confirmed on Wednesday that the fee had been paid.

2025 Nolan Scholarship awarded to Mackenzie Porter

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) is delighted to announce that the 2025 Nolan Scholarship has been awarded to TBA Fast Track graduate Mackenzie Porter. “It’s an honour to receive the Basil Nolan Scholarship, and I am very grateful to the Nolans for this opportunity to participate in the Thoroughbred Breeding Management course at the Irish National Stud in 2026,” Porter said. “It’s been an amazing journey so far and this will be a great stepping-stone for my career to continue its progression following on from the Fast Track program. I’d like to thank the entire team at Widden and everyone at TBA; I’m very excited to be heading to Ireland for this opportunity and look forward to bringing back a wealth of knowledge and experience.” Mackenzie will travel to Ireland in January 2026 to commence her studies at the Irish National Stud.

Livamol to decide Sharp ‘N’ Smart’s Cup path

Sharp 'N' Smart (Credit: Trish Dunell)

Sharp ‘N’ Smart (Redwood) faces a pivotal test in Saturday’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Ellerslie, with his performance to determine whether he presses on towards next month’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The six-year-old has had three unplaced runs this preparation, but co-trainer and co-owner Graeme Rogerson remains optimistic about his progress. “He has had a couple of runs and they have been very good,” said Rogerson, who trains in partnership with his wife Debbie. “He is getting up to a distance that suits him.” George Rooke will take the ride in the Livamol, and Rogerson was buoyed by the jockey’s feedback after a track gallop on Tuesday morning. “George Rooke is riding him on Saturday, he came and worked him on Tuesday and I am happy with him,” Rogerson said. “I think he will run well.” Sharp ‘N’ Smart was among the 53 second declarations for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, but Rogerson said a trans-Tasman trip hinges on a strong showing this weekend. “We will see what happens on Saturday and see where his future lies,” he said. Should the gelding fail to impress, Rogerson will turn his focus to domestic staying features. “He will run in the Cups, he just wants a drier track,” he said. “He has had his issues, but I think he has still got it there, but we will soon see.” Sharp ‘N’ Smart will be joined in the Livamol by stablemate Solidify (Redwood), who steps back up to Group 1 company after a strong third at Hawera last start. “He is as good as I have had him, so we thought we would run him in the Livamol, and Masa Hashizume rides,” Rogerson said.

Quintessa shoots for another Group 1

Te Akau has been forced to take an unconventional path to Ellerslie with Quintessa (Shamus Award) and are confident the high-class mare will strip in the best possible order, given the circumstances. The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained representative will step out in Saturday’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) off the back of her outstanding resuming victory in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m). Plans to run in the middle leg of the Triple Crown, the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), were scrapped due to the heavily rain-affected ground at Te Rapa. “As an older mare, she looks after herself on the wet tracks and we don’t think she would have performed to her best and I certainly don’t think she would have won the race,” Bergerson said. “She is really good off a different build-up due to the rain, obviously it’s not the ideal prep but we think we have got her as good as we can have her,” Bergerson said. “It’s a bit of a query going from 1400 to 2000m, but she was really good first-up and has come on since. She’s picked up in the coat over the last couple of weeks and is tracking the right way. Time will tell and we had to play the cards we were dealt.”

Places To Be steps up in Soliloquy Stakes

Kelly Van Dyk of Prima Park Bloodstock will test exciting homebred filly Places To Be (Hello Youmzain) at black-type level for the first time in Saturday’s Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Ellerslie. Places To Be was a two-time trial winner before making a winning debut by four lengths at Taupo. After missing a start due to heavy track conditions, she returned to post a controlled 1150-metre heat victory at Waipa last Thursday. “We’re under no illusion that it is a big step-up in class but she’s given us no reason to doubt her at all,” Van Dyk said. “We really believe in her ability and she was not only impressive in her first start, but also her trial last week. The trial was Plan B, we planned to race her at Matamata but with the rain that came, we weren’t prepared to start her on that heavy track. We took her to the trials and tried to go as quietly as we possibly could. I think the jockey did as best as he could to keep her under a strong hold through the line and she’s come through it really well. She’s bang on, I don’t think we could have her any better, so it’s up to her now and we’re soon going to find out where her ability sits among some of the top three-year-old fillies.” Places To Be is the first foal out of the Pierro (Lonhro) mare Socialights, and being a filly, Van Dyk and co-breeder Ben Kwok opted to race her themselves rather than offer her at auction. “We bred her, we raced the mother and she was the first foal out of the mare,” Van Dyk said. “Being a filly, we thought we would keep her and see how we went, she was a bit small so she wasn’t the most ideal sales prospect. A good friend, Bevan Smith, came in as well as a racing partner, he was keen to have a bit of fun and race her with us. Right from day one she’s shown quite a lot of ability, it’s exciting for us.”

UK: Precise’s to be offered at Tattersalls December Mares Sale

Way To My Heart (Galileo), the dam of brilliant Fillies’ Mile (Gr 1, 1m) and Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Precise (Starspangledbanner), will be offered in the Sceptre Sessions at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, which takes place from December 1-3. Precise, Coolmore's daughter of Starspangledbanner (Choisir), has won her last four starts including a brace of Group 1 victories and the Prestige Fillies' Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Goodwood. She now heads most ante-post lists for next year's 1,000 Guineas after her three-and-a-quarter-length victory in the Fillies' Mile last week. Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment in foal to the late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), Way To My Heart is by Galileo out of the Listed-winning and Group placed Mystical Lady (Halling), making her a sister to the multiple dual Listed winner and Irish Derby runner-up Kingfisher. The exciting Wootton Bassett-Galileo cross has been represented this year by top-level winners Al Riffa, Puerto Rico and Whirl. Way To My Heart also has a yearling colt and filly foal who are both by Wootton Bassett. Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: "The victories of Precise in the Fillies’ Mile and Moyglare Stud Stakes make her the highest rated two-year-old filly in Europe and she looks an outstanding prospect for next year. It's a privilege to be asked to offer her dam Way To My Heart in the Sceptre Sessions of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and she joins a growing cast of exceptional fillies and mares set to be offered at Europe’s premier breeding stock sale."

IRE: Dam of Royal Ascot winner Merchant catalogued at Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale

Ceistiu (Vocalised), the dam of Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood winner Merchant (Teofilo), and proven Group 2 producer Miss You Too (Montjeu), feature among a larger offering of mares catalogued for the 2025 Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale. The catalogue features a quality collection of 401 mares and fillies from many of the world’s leading breeding operations headed by HH Aga Khan Studs, Derrinstown Stud, Godolphin and Moyglare Stud. The sale will take place on November 21 and 22, immediately after the four-day November Foal Sale. Ceistiu (Lot 1183) will be offered by Boherguy Stud in foal to leading sire Mehmas (Acclamation), while Miss You Too (1161), dam of Lillie Langtry (Gr 2, 1m 6f) winner Term Of Endearment (Sea The Moon), will go through the ring in foal to Baaeed (Sea The Stars).

Powerhouse bidders clash as Starspangledbanner filly from a hot pedigree brings 900,000gns

A crowd of major players followed the sister to recent Listed winner Avicenna into the Park Paddocks ring midway through day two of Tattersalls Book 2 on Tuesday.

Ed Sackville, standing opposite the Coolmore crew at the back of the packed gangway, had a major bearing on proceedings, but eventually backed down when Godolphin’s Anthony Stroud struck a bid of 900,000gns.

The daughter of Starspangledbanner was bred by Sue Ann Foley, daughter of JP McManus, and sold through her Islanmore Stud.

Godolphin already know plenty about the pedigree as Sheikh Mohammed’s royal blue colours were aboard Avicenna when he won the Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster last month. That form received a notable boost on Saturday when runner-up Hankelow landed the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket.

“She’s an exceptionally good-looking filly,” said Stroud, who signed for Avicenna at 450,000gns at last year’s Book 2. “She’s a very good mover and it’s a current pedigree. We have the full-brother and he’s done absolutely everything correctly. This is a very good individual who’s been very, very well prepared by Islanmore. She’s a lovely filly. She’s a bit of a standout.”

He added: “She’s quite similar to the brother; it’s hard to compare a filly with a colt but in many ways she’s more attractive. She’s a pretty outstanding-looking filly.”

The youngster is out of the Galileo mare Love Potion. This means she is a sibling to three winners, with Avicenna joined by the highly rated pair Amortentia and Old Cock. The six-figure filly is also bred on the same cross as recent Fillies' Mile winner Precise.

“We weren’t expecting that,” said Islanmore stud manager Nigel Anderton. “She’s a gorgeous filly and she must’ve had over 200 shows during the week. She’s beautifully balanced and each and every time she came out she walked like a queen. We arrived here on Thursday, started showing on Friday and then got the big update with Precise, who’s also out of a Galileo mare.”

Reflecting on watching the bidding unfold, Anderton said: “It was amazing and it just shows you what can happen when two people like the filly. When a nice horse goes in there anything can happen, and she was a beauty queen. She’s very similar to her brother but she’s probably bigger at this stage and has a bit more scope. I actually liked her more. Sometimes you have to convince other fellas to like them too, but it wasn’t too hard this week.”

Anderton also paid tribute to the team at Islanmore in County Limerick, and explained they had been working with this family for the best part of two decades.

“We bought the granddam here [for 230,000gns] 20 years ago,” he said. “It’s a real good-looking family that’s produced some beautiful stock. We raced most of them ourselves but we got a big touch here last year with the full-brother, Avicenna, who got the big update since the catalogue came out. Thanks kindly to Mr Stroud for buying him last year and to Mr [Roger] Varian for training him so well. Hopefully he’ll go on and be a Group horse next year.

“A big, big thanks to the team at home too. Danny Mulcahy lunged this filly every morning, Seamie Cregan fed her at night and Alan Carey foaled her. She was very well minded all the way along. Johnny Mulcahy, who’s been coming here for 40 years, said his legs have been walked off from showing her all week! He’s done over 200 shows so he’s due to go on holiday next week. It’s a big team effort.”

The youngster became the joint second-most expensive filly in Book 2 history. The record is held by Shadwell buy Tarhib, who fetched 1,050,000gns in 2019.

With 19 black-type winners on the board, including Group 1 scorers Desert Flower, Gewan and Ombudsman, and with more than £6.339 million in progeny prize-money banked, Night Of Thunder is well on course to claim a maiden British and Irish champion sires’ title.

Ryan added: “Following these Night Of Thunders in here, you just don’t know what you’ll have to pay. I’m delighted to get him, though. He’s for an owner in the yard. It’s always hard trying to buy them but I’m very lucky to have owners with the money to come and buy these horses.”

Ryan was back in business later in the day and went to 350,000gns for the Starman half-brother to Listed scorer Mehmento from Tally-Ho Stud. Starman’s yearling crop was conceived at a fee of just €15,000, and this youngster was the third lot by the sire to make 300,000gns or more at Book 2.

French connection

The second lot to break through the half million mark was the French-bred Siyouni filly offered by La Motteraye Consignment. She was knocked down to Ross Doyle at 525,000gns.

The youngster was bred by Haras Voltaire and is a half-sister to Zalina, an impressive winner of a Deauville maiden for owner Nurlan Bizakov and trainer Mario Baratti.

Lot 936: Siyouni ex Lady Baker filly (Credit: Alisha Meeder)

“Honestly, we knew she was nice and that we were about to have a good sale, but we weren’t expecting such a price,” said La Motteraye’s Gwen Monneraye. “We’re really happy. The filly has been so straightforward and easy to deal with. She’s a Siyouni with scope and a good walk, there are not that many of them. She reminded me a lot of Laurens.

“On the dam’s side of the pedigree there’s been a big update this summer. The half-sister won a very good maiden at Deauville by three lengths. That helps. We know the family well and it all went according to plan – better than according to plan actually!”

Ryan makes some Thunder

Kevin Ryan’s North Yorkshire base will welcome two exciting new recruits after the trainer bagged a big-money brace during Tuesday’s session. First, and most notably, was the Night Of Thunder colt out of Habbat Reeh from Genesis Green Stud. Karl Burke filled the role of underbidder after Ryan signalled a play of 550,000gns.

The May-born foal is a sibling to two winners, including Dhabab, whose record features a third-place finish behind Native Trail in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes.

“I’d seen him four times over the last few days,” said Ryan. “He’s by a great sire and he has an amazing attitude; he’s very laid-back and never put a foot wrong each time I went back to see him. Even when he came up here to the ring, he just had a great way of going about him. He’s a great physical, even though he’s a May foal there’s a lot of strength there. I just hope he turns out to be a racehorse now.”

The transaction continued a productive October Yearling Sale for the Kildangan Stud-based stallion. He had 22 lots change hands during Book 1 for a combined 13.445 million guineas and an average price of 611,135gns. His current yearling crop was bred at a fee of €100,000.

On the cross-Channel consignment, Monneraye added: “Haras Voltaire sells a lot so they had horses at Arqana in August, but I think it’s a good idea not to put all your yearlings in the same place, just in case the sale doesn’t go to plan. They like to spread the horses around and have always been a supporter of Tattersalls, and of La Motteraye.”

Doyle explained the filly would head back to France to be trained by Pia Brandt on behalf of Stall Perlen, the racing vehicle of Norwegian-born entrepreneur Magne Jordanger and his wife Bente.

“She’s a lovely filly, the cross is very good, but she’s gorgeous physically and she has a nice bit of size to her,” said Doyle. “She’s probably a backend two-year-old type, a Classic filly for the future. It’s a big shout, but I hope that’s what she ends up becoming. Her Pinatubo half-sister Zalina won at Deauville on debut in August. She was extremely impressive and hopefully will give us a black type update.”

Another Star for sire on fire

Starspangledbanner’s progeny enjoyed a productive weekend on the Newmarket turf, with Precise running out a most impressive winner of the Fillies’ Mile and Gstaad recording his third consecutive Group 1 runner-up effort in the Dewhurst Stakes.

That hot run of form was mirrored in the sales ring, as it was not only the 900,000gns session-topper the Castlehyde resident was responsible for. The Amo Racing recruitment drive continued when Kia Joorabchian’s outfit went to 340,000gns for the half-sister to Lumiere Rock.

The filly was offered by Castletown Stud, whose Joe Hernon oversees Starspangledbanner’s stallion career at Coolmore’s Castlehyde operation.

Kia Joorabchian (Credit: Alisha Meeder)

“I’ve loved Starspangledbanner since the days that his sire Choisir was in Castlehyde,” said Hernon. “I love what he makes; horses with short cannon bones and speed. It’s a privilege to be standing Starspangledbanner. He’s had an amazing year and he’s just such a consistent sire. He’s a source of speed, as was Choisir, it’s all coming through from his dad, that sprinting mould and sprinting frame.”

The dam, Gold Away mare Last Gold, has bred three winners, headed by the Group 2 Blandford Stakes scorer Lumiere Rock. Those accomplishments far outshine her modest price tag.

“I’m just lucky to have a good mare,” continued Hernon. “Desmond, my son, bought her at Arqana for €10,000. I thought she’d be way out of our league but she was announced as having a vice. We bought her anyway and she’s been nothing but good to us. It’s been great.”

He added: “I was expecting a good price, we’d had a lot of vets so I thought things might go well, but I didn’t think we’d go this high. The mare’s back in foal to Starspangled. He’s been putting it together as he’s gone up in fee and now that he’s getting those better mares he’s just getting better and better. We all saw what happened here on Saturday, so you’ll hear a lot of him in the Classics next year.”

Starspangledbanner spent the most recent covering season at a fee of €45,000, while his current yearlings were conceived at a career high of €50,000.

Gangsta Granny

ANZ News

That wily old desert fox Stuart Ramsey has been at it again, breeding another stakes-winning mare with a pedigree that sounds as Australian as he does.

Gangsta Granny (Written Tycoon) took Saturday’s The Nivison (Gr 3, 1200m), breaking through for a deserved black-type win after a second and a third in a Group 3 and a Group 2 in her previous two runs.

Speaking of breeding and genetics, it was a successful - almost huge - weekend for the Ramsey family’s line of breeders. Twenty minutes after Gangsta Granny’s win, Planet Red (Admire Mars) - a horse bred by Ramsey’s son John, who trains at Scone - ran a superb second in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Ramsey Snr, the beef baron who’s as good at creating racehorses as bulls and cows, was on Wednesday herding some loose cattle on his vast property midway between Charleville and Birdsville - in 42 degree heat, and as a rising 73-year-old.

“Not on foot, mind you. I’m not silly. I’m in me air-conditioned ute,” said Ramsey, who was 80km from the homestead, though still on his farm.

“You should see where I am now,” the old bushie told It’s In The Blood via satellite phone. “I’m out here in the desert. It’s flat and dusty and hot as buggery. If you could see where I am, you’d think I’m bloody mad. Or madder.”

Well recognisable at sales as the square-set little bloke in the braces, Ramsey stopped to mop his brow and tell us how Gangsta Granny came about.

The question we all want to know first, of course, is whether he still wears his braces in the outback, or are they just for show at yearling sales in the big smoke?

“No, I’ve still got ‘em on,” he declared. “I lost a bit of weight actually, so I had to cut ‘em down a bit. Then me missus had to find a different pair of pants for me to wear. They go alright. Haven’t worn ‘em in 30 years, but they still go alright.”

Far removed from the heat and dust of the outback, Ramsey has the craft and wherewithal to breed many an important winner amidst the gilded halls of big city racetracks. Horses such as last year’s TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) queen Chain Of Lightning, a four-time black-type victor borne of such an obscure sire as Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor), and who’s in fact that stallion’s only Group winner.

Ramsey bred her and raced her with his old mate and fellow bushie Peter Moody, watching her win $2.7 million and selling her to Yulong as a broodmare for another $2.5m.

The veteran owner of the Hunter Valley’s Turangga Stud has a canny knowledge of bloodlines which belies one or two softer patches in the memory banks, which can creep into one’s eighth decade among all those horses.

Asked for one particular detail he says, “Yeah that could be right, I wouldn’t know - me brain’s not good enough. I’m flat out remembering what I had for breakfast.”

And he’s not exactly boastful when asked how many stakes winners he’s bred.

“How would I know?” he laughs, as if we shouldn’t have been so silly. “I do try all the time though. Every mating I try.”

Ramsey might prefer to look ahead, which is easier after all, for in the same breath he says: “I’ll tell ya what though, I had a winner at Armidale yesterday [Tuesday] who’s a stakes horse.

“It’s taken me four years to get him going. I bought him inside a Shamardal mare for $11,000 in New Zealand, and I can tell you now he’s a stakes horse.”

For black bookers, that’s Concoction (Rageese), and he’s won two from three for Armidale trainer Stirling Osland.

“And I’ve got another one with Moody called Call Me Later,” he says. “We don’t want to run her too much - she’s too good. It’s taken me almost 30 years to breed her. I claimed a mare in America and sent her to Devil’s Bag to produce the mare.”

That mare was claimed in 2001, and three mares down the line, Ramsey had Bright Rubick (Rubick), who’s now the dam of the yet-to-race Call Me Later (Too Darn Hot).

Chain Of Lightning, Ramsey says, took 20 years to breed. Her pedigree packs a punch with several outstanding mares repeated in La Troienne, Lalun, Plucky Liege, Thong and Fairy Bridge. She also has some Australian reinforcement, with Bletchingly (Biscay) doubled up at 5m x 4m.

Ramsey loves playing around with inbreeding, which we see in colonial spadefuls in Gangsta Granny.

Asked if there were similarities in breeding horses and cattle, he says: “Livestock’s the same nomatter what you’re breeding. All these dickheads don’t want to inbreed to the good ones, but that’s the only way to breed them.

“It goes for everything - dogs, pigs, chooks. What do you think nature is?

“The worst thing that’s ever happened to breeding horses is better transport. You’ve only got to look at New Zealand; they’ve got a small genetic pool, the same as Ireland and France and those places, and see how many good horses they breed.

“We [Australia] bring in the foreign genetics, and it just doesn’t work. Well, it is now because you’ve got enough of it. But High Chaparral, for example, was very lucky he went to New Zealand and ran into a lot of mares he clicked with there, so he started to work.”

Gangsta Granny is a well-related four-year-old, with her second dam Marrego (Marscay) being the dam of Eremein (Timber Country), her second foal. Trained by Allan Denham, the gelding won seven stakes races - five of them Group 1s - most memorably in a four-year-old autumn of 2006 that brought him the elite treble of the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), The BMW (Gr 1, 2400m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Ramsey bought Marrego 12 years after she’d had Eremein, for just $16,000. Her fifth foal Gliding (Flying Spur) had won a Listed race in Melbourne by then, but Marrego would still receive another boost when another daughter, Peace Force (Bernardini), won one Group 3 and placed in three more.

However, Ramsey would only breed one horse out of the ageing Marrego in six attempts. That was Gangsta Granny’s dam, Miss Hawaii (Manhattan Rain) - one hit in a string of misses - and she was helped by some old country cunning.

“I used a trick I learned when I was seven-year-old,” says Ramsey, in the bush vernacular that often eschews plurals. “To get mares pregnant, we’d ride ‘em up to the stallion and get ‘em all hot and sweaty. Then they’d get in-foal straight away because they’re all hot and sweaty, see?

“With Marrego, I led her up to Arrowfield on the side of a buggy to get her served, so she was all sweaty when she got there: straight into the mating barn with Manhattan Rain, ready to go, and bingo.

“After that it didn’t happen because I didn’t have the time or something. But they’re good families, those Marscay mares. They’re terrific.”

When you look at the in-breeding at play in Gangsta Granny, and the pedigree overall, you could almost guess it’s a Ramsey mating.

There are only two names in the first three generations that don’t have the (AUS) suffix, and they’re sire Written Tycoon’s Irish-bred grandsire Last Tycoon (Try My Best) and his French-bred damsire Kenmare (Kalamoun).

Written Tycoon (Credit: Sportpix)

Ramsey may have had Written Tycoon in mind when he bought Marrego, for they share two influential Australian stallions.

Putting Marrego’s daughter Miss Hawaii to Written Tycoon has given Gangsta Granny a 4f x 3f of 1982 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Marscay (Biscay), in good places via the dam of Written Tycoon’s sire Iglesia (Last Tycoon), and Marrego, Gangsta Granny’s second dam.

And the mating also affects a 4f x 4f of the great Vain (Wilkes), coming in strong as Written Tycoon’s second damsire, and Gangsta Granny’s third damsire.

“It was the Vain and Marscay crosses that led me to go to Written Tycoon,” Ramsey says.

Of course if you go back further, Marscay, like Bletchingly before him, was by Biscay who was by the breed-shaping Star Kingdom. While that great British import’s sirelines have largely died out, having his offspring - particularly the sons - sprinkled in a pedigree warms Ramsey’s heart.

He loves combining two or more of Star Kingdom’s three exceptional full-brother sons, Biscay, Star Of Heaven and Tattenham. He couldn’t attain that in the case of Gangsta Granny, but does have Star Kingdom five times through two sons and a daughter at 6m, 6m, 8f x 7m, 5m, via Biscay, Noholme and Fairy Dream, and with Biscay twice more in the bottom half.

“You can’t have too much of Star Kingdom. He only had 40 foals a year and he’s still influential,” Ramsey says. “He and Wilkes ruled the world.”

So it’s also good, then, that French import Wilkes is there three times, at 7m, 5m x 5m, the first one via Bogan Road, winner of three modern Group 1s, and the second two through Vain.

Aside from Australian sires, Ramsey’s a fan of repeating key mares wherever they’re from, and in Gangsta Granny there’s a triplication of one of the finest, 1960s American blue hen Best In Show (Traffic Judge), at 6f x 6f, 6m, through three different offspring.

Her daughter Sex Appeal is the dam of Gangsta Granny’s fourth sire Try My Best, while in the bottom half Best In Show has full-siblings in Show Lady - the third dam of damsire Manhattan Rain, and Gielgud, who’s Gangsta Granny’s fourth damsire.

“That Best In Show family is the best middle distance family in the world,” Ramsey says. “I like those good females and I like repeating them.

“If you can get brothers and sisters in a pedigree, or half-brothers and half-sisters, it’s better. That’s what you aim for - to sex balance it a bit.”

Other mares at play in Gangsta Granny include Lalun at 7s x 7s via Never Bend and Bold Reason, plus three others repeated in columns eight and nine in 1920s Italian mare Nogara (12 times), British mare Selene (eight) and France’s Mumtaz Begum (seven).

Hyperion is the dominant sire, with 19 appearances, ahead of Pharos with 15 and Nearco 14.

Miss Hawaii had a colt last year by Paulele (Dawn Approach) but sadly died two months later.

Still, the veteran cattleman appears to have hit the bullseye with Gangsta Granny, reflected in her $240,000 price at Inglis Easter - compared to her half-sister by Overshare (I Am Invincible) who fetched $12,000 at this year’s Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale.

“No one knows with genetics,” he says. “I’ve got seven kids and they’re all different. Dawn Fraser’s daughter couldn’t dog paddle.”

Speed Dragon dazzles as Vincent Ho rides treble at Happy Valley

Speed Dragon (Darci Brahma) made a triumphant return to racing on Wednesday night following 241 days away after scorching to a rousing first-up success in the HK$3.12 million Class 2 Lei Yue Mun Handicap (1800m) at Happy Valley.

Sidelined for four months following a ligament injury, Speed Dragon – the first winner of a running treble for jockey Vincent Ho – crossed immediately from his wide draw (10) to settle in last position. Pacesetter Telecom Fighters (The Brothers War) made the running before yielding at the top of the home straight as Speed Dragon gradually pinched ground.

Helene Feeling (Sioux Nation) took the lead turning for home as Californiatotality (Zoustar) made his run. Ho asked the Francis Lui-trained Speed Dragon to lift between runners and the six-year-old obliged, clocking a race-best 22.87 over the final 400 metres to defeat Californiatotality in 1m 47.96 by a short head with Encountered (Churchill) filling third.

“He trialled very well, so I actually expected him to be very competitive, which he was,” Ho said. “It was great that he could win for the owner. Everything went well for him; the opening on the inside was perfect.

“I think so [to progressing further], it’s still early in the season and he will be fitter after this race tonight. I’m grateful that Francis and my boss [Caspar Fownes] support me. Hopefully I can kick on some more.”

Indentured to Caspar Fownes as an apprentice, Ho kicked off his three-timer at the city circuit aboard Mr Desira (All Too Hard) for Fownes – who also celebrated a double – in the third section of the Class 4 Fung Mo Handicap (1200m).

Ho, who returned to competition at the start of this season following neck fractures and a head injury, sealed his trio when Lui’s King Miles (Exceed And Excel) held onto the Class 3 Hok Yuen Handicap (1200m) over a fast-finishing Storm Rider (Dracarys). Tonight’s treble his Ho’s first since December 1, 2024.

Ho said: “He showed his form again at the trials. The stable has done a great job with him, he was fit and performed tonight early in the season, where he has an advantage when he’s fit and with the draw [one]. If not, we would have been beaten! We only won by a head.”

Sporting celebrity icon Aaron Kwok’s familiar black and red silks, five-year-old Dancing Classics (Press Statement) toughed out a second career score in the second section of the Class 4 Fung Mo Handicap (1200m) under apprentice Ellis Wong to commence Fownes’ brace.

Wong said: “I’m very happy to win for Aaron again. He [Dancing Classics] has improved a lot from last season. This horse, he did a very good job. The shadow roll made him more relaxed, and he had a good barrier [one], the pace was good, and in the straight he tried so hard.”

Tonight’s double puts Fownes behind only Mark Newnham (11-12) in the trainers’ championship. Newnham reclaimed the outright top spot with Excellence Value’s (Fastnet Rock) score in the nightcap, the Class 3 Lung Cheung Handicap (1800m), under Zac Purton.

A clever ride from Luke Ferraris saw gelding King Glorioso (Satono Aladdin) hold off a rampaging Thunder Prince (I Am Invincible) by a nose in the first section of the Class 4 Fung Mo Handicap (1200m) for trainer Douglas Whyte.

Whyte said: “Only when the number went up was I happy. Luke gave him an absolutely beautiful ride – he could’ve led but he let the speed go, took advantage of that, got the horse to settle and he got off the rail and got going at the right time. The margin was very narrow but a win’s a win, so the good ride made the difference.”

Justify (Scat Daddy) gelding Fantastic Fun roared to a first win for jockey Hugh Bowman and trainer Danny Shum in the second section of the Class 4 Hung Luen Handicap (1650m).

Six-year-old Celtic Times (Dawn Approach) rallied late to grab a third career triumph in the first section of the Class 4 Hung Luen Handicap (1650m) with jockey Karis Teetan for trainer Manfred Man, surprising at odds of 29/1 by one-and-a-half lengths.

Apolar Fighter (Not A Single Doubt) exploded to a first win at his 20th start for jockey Jerry Chau and trainer David Eustace in the Class 5 Ngau Chi Wan Handicap (1650m). The success was Eustace’s first for the 2025/26 racing season following his 36-win maiden campaign.

“The horse has been running well and just been hitting the crossbar,” Eustace said. “He’s shown plenty of promise. I thought he would win before tonight in Class 5 – hopefully, he can get a bit of confidence now.

“Jerry hasn’t ridden much for us, but it was a great ride by him. It’s nice to get a winner, most of mine have taken a run to get going so hopefully we can kick on now as a stable.”

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday at Sha Tin with the running of the Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m).
