A strong buying depth and broad international participation underpinned a buoyant day’s trade at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Riverside Stables on Thursday, making it a record-breaking edition of the two-year-old auction in Sydney.

What's On

The session was headlined by the Hunter’s Lodge-consigned Toronado (High Chaparral) colt out of Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince), who became the highest priced colt sold at the sale when Hermitage Thoroughbreds went to $900,000 to secure the youngster.

A total of 122 lots sold for a record $19.05 million – up from $15.6 million in 2024 and eclipsing the previous record by over $2.3 million.

A record 64 lots realised $100,000 or more, while 39 sold for over $200,000, producing a clearance rate of 75 per cent, up from 64 per cent last year. The auction returned an average of $156,180 and a median of $100,000, matching last year’s benchmark on a day vendors widely described as solid and well-supported across all levels of the market.

“We said before that we were the best prepared we’d ever been,” Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch told ANZ News.

“We felt we were in a good spot to run as good a sale as we could, and I’m certainly pleased with the metrics. I think it's been, on the whole, a positive day.”

Hutch said the depth of quality among this year’s catalogue had been reflected in the strength of competition, particularly at the top end of the market, underlining the increasing professionalism of vendors, many of whom now plan specifically around the Ready2Race format.

“I felt like we had great depth amongst the buyers at the top end,” he said.

“We feel like we lament this sale every year, that we just don't feel like we have enough horses to satisfy the demand from people at that top quartile, and it's probably the best group we've had for this sale. I think there are plenty of people making money today.”

Hunter’s Lodge first draft delivers dream result with Toronado top lot

Much was made of Lot 188 before he entered the ring. The colt had clocked the fastest breeze of the sale at a slick 10.05 seconds, doing so with apparent ease and backing it up with both pedigree and presence.

Out of a Group 3-winning mare and half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Duais (Shamus Award) and recent The Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Philia (All Too Hard), the colt duly delivered a dream result from the first ever draft of Cade Hunter and Liam Ruddy’s Hunter’s Lodge, returning $650,000 on their $250,000 Inglis Easter investment and topping the sale.

“It couldn’t feel any better to be honest, it couldn’t have gone any better,” Ruddy said. “The whole draft has sold really well, it’s been a good clearance rate and everybody is getting a good return on investment so we’re really, really over the moon.

“We had the reserve at $400,000 so when the bidding opened at $400,000, that was just the best feeling, we took a deep breath and after that it was just fun.

“We were trying to keep track of who was bidding but there were so many bids coming from so many directions.

“To have a judge like Guy [Mulcaster] buy a horse off us, we’re stoked. It’s unbelievable that Caspar [Fownes] was desperate to have the horse, he loved him. I guess it’s a real credit to us that those sorts of judges want to buy a horse off us and hopefully we can find another one for them next year.”

Hermitage agent Guy Mulcaster, who is also the main talent scout for trainer Chris Waller, said: “He really stood out.

“We identified him from the breeze-ups and then we saw him physically and he matched his breeze so it was a no-brainer for the Hermitage team to have a look at a horse like that, and they saw him this morning for the first time and loved him. It was a great result for them.

“When you saw him physically you could see there was a fair bit of improvement in him too so it worked out well.”

Hunter’s Lodge sold half of their eight lots for a combined $1,256,000, another highlight pinhook result coming when its $14,000 Inglis Premier purchase by Rubick (Encosta De Lago) out of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Aqueous made $160,000.

“I’m speechless,” Cade Hunter said. “The result for the draft as a whole has just been unbelievable for our first year. It’s overwhelming, we appreciate the support from everyone.”

Chuang proved a major presence in the buyer ranks, signing for six lots worth a combined $2.585 million.

“The stock was very well prepared,” Mulcaster said of the catalogue as a whole. “When they’re buying them at Easter or Melbourne etc, some of them are really nice horses that we already had notes on and they’ve all gone forward and I think their preparation for this sale is a testament to the vendors. There’s so many people here.”

Hutch added: “It was great to have Mr. Chuang here. He's been a very good patron of Inglis for a long time and had incredible success, both domestically and internationally. He's had a lot of success with yearlings from Inglis, and he came here and bought a number of nice horses today. He bought horses for which there was tremendous competition.”

Eugene Chuang’s Hermitage Thoroughbreds also signed the docket for the second top-lot, a son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) consigned by Crossley Thoroughbreds who sold for $675,000.

The colt breezed in 11.07s and is bred in the purple, being out of winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Maroon Bay, a half-sister to Group 1 winner turned sire Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock), Listed winner Setana (Fastnet Rock) and Jolie Bay, the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Joliestar (Zoustar), who will shoot for Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) glory on Saturday.

“He was a lovely colt and really only got on our radar late, this morning actually and he ticked all the boxes,” Mulcaster said. “He’s another nice one to add to the collection.’’

Crossley’s Mitch Pearce, who offered the colt on behalf of a client, said: “It’s an amazing feeling. I can’t really put it into words.

“This colt has paraded beautifully all week, he’s a vendor’s dream.

“Liam Howley has prepared this guy all the way along, I’m just the lucky guy standing here talking about it. I just can’t wait to watch his racetrack future.’’

Hong Kong demand sets tone for record-breaking sale

There was a steady stream of six figure lots for much of the afternoon, which kicked off in fine fashion as the first three lots, all of whom broke 11 seconds in their respective breeze ups, sold to Hong Kong buyers for $220,000 or more.

Heading those was Lot 2, a Fernrigg Farm-consigned colt by Exceed And Excel (Danehill) out East Asia (Swiss Ace) who was knocked down to Hong Kong-based Me Tsui for $360,000 after being passed in at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

“His breeze up was exceptional, so I was hoping to get that,” Rae-Louise Farmer told ANZ News.

“He's always been a nice horse, but you can never get too confident with the market, especially these days.

“He was always just a little bit on the smaller side, but over the last six months he's really grown into himself, and he carried himself with a lot of presence here, and we got rewarded for it.”

The Hunter Valley nursery sold five of its six lots on offer, finishing eighth by aggregate with gross receipts of $885,000 despite a relatively smaller draft in what was only its second year selling at Ready2Race.

Another of the highlights was Lot 134, a Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) colt out of Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)-winning So You Think (High Chaparral) mare So You Assume. After being passed in at the Inglis Classic Sale, he sold to Michael Chang for $210,000.

Fernrigg also sold a Zoustar colt (Lot 81) to Chinese outfit CHOA for $180,000, while its colt by Tassort (Brazen Beau) went the way of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr for $120,000.

“We are excited,” Farmer said. “To be honest, we came here with a draft of really well prepared horses. Robert Quinn's done an amazing job with them. We bred most of them ourselves, and kind of stuck to our guns when we couldn't sell them as yearlings. The patience has paid off, so I'm very happy.

“I think Inglis have done a tremendous job getting the clientele here. The foot traffic's been enormous over the last couple of days.

“The Asian market is very strong on horses that look like they're going to be up and running and sound. I think if you've got the right horse that's been prepared properly, you're gonna get paid.”

All told, buyers from Hong Kong were the most active, spending $8.13 million on 36 horses, making up 42.67 per cent of the market share. Their closest rival was New South Wales, who spent a little short of $5 million on 27 horses, recording a market share of 26 per cent.

The third top lot on the day was a colt by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) consigned by Ohukia Lodge, who sold to Gai Waterhouse and Dahli Farm for $575,000.

Other standouts included Rathosheen Bloodstock-consigned colts by Exceed And Excel and Toronado, who sold for $560,000 and $550,000 respectively, while Kiltannon Stable’s son of Yulong shuttle sire Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) realised $510,000 when selling to the Hong Kong-bound James Cummings.

Baystone Lodge’s Richini, a daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) who finished a solid fifth in the Debutante Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on Wednesday, attracted plenty of interest and eventually went the way of Bjorn Baker and Jim Clarke for $500,000.

Nolen Racing finished top vendor, their 15 lots (after withdrawals) all selling for a combined $2.188 million at an average of $145,867.

The operation’s top earner was a son of Pinatubo (Shamardal) out of a half-sister to both Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Reaan (Hussonet) and the dam of dual Group 1-winning heroine Coolangatta (Written Tycoon). He was knocked down to Magus Equine for $425,000, having fetched $90,000 as a yearling at the Easter sale earlier in the year.

“Unbelievable really,’’ Tal Nolen said. “Inglis did an amazing job getting the buyers here, it’s been a phenomenal sale.”

Pinhookers strike across the board

Darrel Burnet’s DBS Thoroughbreds achieved its third successful pinhook in as many years when Lot 178, a Wooded (Wootton Bassett) colt secured for $160,000 at Inglis Premier realised $290,000.

Last year the operation sold a Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt for $420,000 after being sourced for $75,000 at Inglis Premier, while also turning a $25,000 Brutal (O’Reilly) colt into a $140,000 two-year-old at the 2023 sale.

“Spending $160,000 on a yearling is always going to be risky, it was our most expensive ever yearling purchase,” Burnet told ANZ. “To bring him here indicates what we thought of him and backs up our judgement, to do three successful pinhooks in three consecutive years.”

Burnet’s results underscored his ability both to pinhook and to prepare horses specifically for the Ready2Race format, with his All Too Hard (Casino Prince) colt selling for the first time to Japan’s Knine / Rising Sun Syndicate for $220,000.

“The reserve was much lower, but he's been very popular all week,” Burnet said. “He's a beautiful animal by the right stallion. Just delighted, over the moon.

“My client wasn’t sure whether to sell him as a yearling earlier in the year, but decided to send him up to me, and we specifically targeted this sale. You can purchase horses for this sale, or you can aim them directly at it.”

It wasn’t just the major consignors finding success, with one of the day’s more rewarding results coming from Dean and Phoebe Grass’ Gippsland Bloodstock, whose sole entry – a North Pacific (Brazen Beau) colt picked up for just $3,250 via an Inglis Digital sale in March – was knocked down to Malaysia for $40,000 after some competitive bidding.

“It’s a great result,” Dean Grass, who trains out of Pakenham, told ANZ News. “There was very little risk involved. He was a lovely horse when we got him online and he was delivered home. He's been a nice colt the whole way through. My wife found him and took the chance on him, and we do the job anyway, so it ended up being worthwhile.

“It was one of those ones where you're not paying a lot, so we took a chance. When we x-rayed him up, he was good. His scope was good. So we thought, alright, that side is covered, and then it was just a matter of him doing the job, which, you know, that's what we do for a living anyway. It’s exciting.”

Sebastian Hutch said the diversity of approaches had become a defining strength of the sale, with professionalism and planning now underpinning success.

“To participate in the sale well, it's a professional exercise,” Hutch told ANZ. “It's part of consolidating a good structure, a good plan, a good team of people, good process.

“There are people who are breeding horses for the sale, there are people who are buying foals for the sale, and people are buying yearlings for the sale. Over the course of a crop cycle I think there's more than enough opportunity for people to consolidate the necessary horse to bring here and have it lift the bar again.”

Hutch acknowledged that while the sale continues to strengthen, the Ready2Race format presents its own set of challenges, particularly given the volume of data available to buyers.

“It is a tricky sale,” he said. “The margin for error becomes very small. One of the upsides is that people have so much more information available on the horses. One of the challenges is, if any of the information is negative, you tend to marginalize a certain percentage of the buying bench.

“I don't think we'll get to clearance rates in the eighties in the short term, but more broadly speaking, we came into this sale wanting to demonstrate that this is the best two-year-old sale in Australia and demonstrate that this has the potential to be the best in Australasia. And I think we're very much on track.

“New Zealand run a very effective two-year-old sale but we are looking to grow the market and encourage more domestic and more New Zealand-based vendors to think that they can participate in this sale and get their best result.”

Hutch said several refinements to the sale’s structure this year had helped improve buyer engagement, from a later start time to the shift to a Thursday session. Feedback from both domestic and international participants suggested the changes created a smoother flow of inspections and bidding activity.

“We're very much committed to the format,” he said. “We're actually trying to make the sale better, and it's borne out in the effort that everybody's made over the last 12 months to make the sale better and borne out further in the results.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

McDonald ready for task of tackling Ka Ying Rising

James McDonald, the only jockey so far to inflict defeat on Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), has declared the world’s top-rated sprinter “an absolute superstar” but warns the Hong Kong champion will need to be at his best to win the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday at Randwick. McDonald, who twice toppled Ka Ying Rising on Wunderbar (Rich Enuff) at Sha Tin in January, 2024, will ride Chris Waller’s Joliestar (Zoustar) this weekend and believes The Everest’s unrelenting pressure will present a formidable challenge to Ka Ying Rising. “He’s a superstar, he’s an absolute superstar. If he brings his Sha Tin form, he’s almost sometimes impossible to beat the way his figures read. I’ve ridden some good horses against him and he’s made them look pretty second rate, to be fair,” McDonald said. “But this is a different kettle of fish. This is probably the toughest test to date for him and he’s going to know he’s in a horse race, especially with the likes of Jimmysstar, Briasa, Joliestar and Lady Shenandoah coming at him. He’s going to have to be at the top of his game.” McDonald is chasing his second victory in The Everest after triumphing on Waller’s Nature Strip (Nicconi) in 2021.

Waller ready to tackle Everest challenge

Chris Waller will launch a three-pronged attack in Saturday’s The Everest at Randwick, with the champion trainer’s focus not only on his own runners but also on how they measure up against the Hong Kong superstar, Ka Ying Rising.

Last year Joliestar was luckless in the corresponding race, shuffled back to last before flashing home to finish just over a length and a half from Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai). Since then, she has claimed Group 1 victories in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m), and returns to Randwick with unfinished business.

“Right after [jockey] James [McDonald] got off her last year, he said we were very stiff. We should have gone closer,” Waller said.

“It hasn’t so much been about redemption, it’s about giving her a second chance. The key is she’s a good horse. Let her use her stride and she’ll be there at the finish. [Ka Ying Rising] has got to bring that overseas rating to Australia. If he does, it's great for Sydney racing, Australian racing. If he doesn't win, I hope he runs second, and we've got a new world champion.”

Waller also saddles Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), winner of the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m), who was runner-up in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) and finished a luckless fourth in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

“Her first-up run was excellent and she had no luck in the Manikato [Stakes],” Waller said. “She does have the x-factor.”

Completing the Waller trio is Angel Capital (Harry Angel), who was a flashing fourth in the Sir Rupert Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at his most recent start. The Yulong-owned entire has won five of his nine starts and, while yet to break through at Group 1 level, his trainer believes that milestone is within reach.

“Everyone that has got anything to do with the horse has got full confidence he’s a big deal,” Waller said. “We’re just waiting for him to put it all together on the big stage.”

War Machine’s limit not yet known

Co-trainer Ben Hayes has admitted that he is unsure of how good his five-year-old gelding War Machine (Harry Angel) is, but is excited to find out the answer when the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) tackles The Everest this weekend. War Machine has been on a sharp upward curve recently, winning all four of his starts for his new trainers including the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) and Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). “The exciting thing about War Machine is that we don’t know his limit yet,” Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers JD and Will, told The Verdict podcast. “Since we’ve had him, he’s had four starts for four wins and improved with every start. His win the other day [in the Gilgai] was probably his most dominant. He was first-up, with plenty of improvement to come. He’s drawn a beautiful gate, we know where the speed is and he maps to get a beautiful run. If something does go wrong with dad’s horse [Ka Ying Rising], it wouldn’t surprise if he was able to be very, very competitive. His final gallop was excellent and he’ll be there to run a big race. He is definitely not there to make up the numbers, that’s for sure.”

Golden Snap primed for Caulfield Cup debut

Japanese mare Golden Snap (Gold Ship) will make her Australian debut in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), as trainer Katsunori Tanaka targets a place alongside some of Japan’s most successful raiders. Tanaka has long had the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in his sights, travelling to Australia more than 18 months ago to study conditions and prepare for this campaign. Golden Snap will aim to become the third Japanese-trained winner of the Caulfield Cup in 11 years, following Admire Rakti (Heart’s Cry) (2014) and Mer De Glace (Rulership) (2019). The mare arrives off strong domestic form and will carry 53.5 kilograms under regular rider Suguru Hamanaka, who retains the mount due to his understanding of the sometimes-temperamental mare. “She is probably not as proven as some of the other Japanese horses that have come over in the past few years,” Tanaka said. “But I have been aiming to race her in Australia, especially in the Melbourne Cup, for a year-and-a-half and I think she is the right candidate as she is lightly-handicapped. Her form is good, and I think she is suited to race in Australia. I am really quite confident that she can run a good race in the Caulfield Cup. We have her fit and ready to go, but there is also improvement to the Melbourne Cup as well.” Golden Snap drew barrier 18, and while Tanaka will leave tactics to Hamanaka, he hopes for a clean, uninterrupted run. “If Golden Snap begins well, she can race forward, if not, she will go back,” Tanaka said. “We want to ride her to keep her momentum going, we don’t want to stop and start.”

Bankers Choice set to be reinspected

Bankers Choice (Credit: Racing Photos)

Bankers Choice (Mongolian Khan) will need to undergo another inspection from Racing Victoria vets before being allowed to take his place in Saturday's Caulfield Cup. The Lindsay Park-trained runner presented with a change in hind limb action when inspected on Thursday, and will be subject to a further inspection on Friday.

Ole Dancer draws well in Guineas

Having got a bit of luck pre-race in drawing barrier five, Katherine Coleman is hoping that Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) can also have some luck in running when she tackles Saturday's Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield. Trained by Coleman and Peter Moody, the three-year-old daughter of Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) will be bidding to turn the tables on Ferivia (Astern) after finishing a narrow second to the Phillip Stokes-trained rival in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) last start. “She has been terribly unlucky in the barrier draw department, her last couple of starts,” Coleman told The Verdict podcast. “It [barrier five] just gives you a few more options, doesn’t it? We know that when she is ridden cold she has an electric turn of foot and can sustain an improving run, when she gets into clear air. If that draw on Saturday means we can sit a little bit closer, especially if Caulfield happens to be playing leaderish, which we know it can do… it just opens a few more doors for us. It was a little bit of a hard watch, in some regards, but I managed to pick my bottom lip up off the floor by telling myself it was the perfect prep run for a Thousand Guineas. I couldn’t be happier with her going into Saturday.”

Abounding set for Tristarc Stakes

Rob Heathcote’s consistent mare Abounding (Rich Enuff) will be out to end a string of luckless placings on Saturday when she lines up in the Tristarc Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. The daughter of Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon) finished second in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at her last start in Queensland, before making her first trip to Victoria where she finished third in the Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), before occupying that same placing in the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and most recently second in the Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m), where she was held up for running until the final 100 metres of the race. “She has come through her last run really well,” travelling foreman Oliver Peoples told ANZ News. “It was a bit of a hard watch, but she pulled up fine from the run. We sent her out to Lindsay Park at Euroa just to give her a few easy days on the waterwalker and she really brightened up from that, so she's come back in as bright as a button and she's been working the house down.” The current favourite for Saturday’s Group 2, she will be partnered once again by Blake Shinn. “We are very happy with barrier five, probably couldn't have asked for a much better gate with how we want to ride her,” Peoples said. “We will ask Blake to be pretty positive, he'll be up in the first four or five and hopefully don't give her any more excuses like she's had those last couple runs. Just looking for a good luck run and she should be there in the end. I think she's the best horse in the race and she's been working like it.”

Gothic Stakes task for Tentyris

After Godolphin chose Tempted (Street Boss) to fill their slot in The Everest, the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Tenetyris (Street Boss), who was considered for the $20 million race, will now take his place in Saturday's Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield instead after a first-up third in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Flemington. The three-year-old colt is being targeted at the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) back at Flemington on November 1, and Sam Freedman feels this weekend's Listed contest fits nicely into Tentyris' prep. "His Grand Final is the Coolmore," Sam Freedman said. "We've left the opportunity there to back up into the Champions Sprint on the last day of Cup week should his form warrant to do that. There had been discussions around The Everest, but it was felt we would save him for the older horses on the last day rather than before his Grand Final." Tentyris won twice in his juvenile year, taking out the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick in March in the lead-up to the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) but was ruled out of the latter race with a stress fracture. "He had a stress fracture behind," Freedman said. "They're not uncommon. It would have been nicer if it was after the Slipper than after the Todman. He did all his rehab and everything and there's been no need to do anything different. He's moving well and ready to go."

Pride confident with Sydney Stakes trio

Joe Pride is confident both a new addition and two familiar faces from his stable can make their presence felt in Saturday’s Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. Godolphin gelding Golden Mile (Astern) will have his first start for Pride in the Group 3 sprint and will be joined by stablemates Coal Crusher (Turffontein) and Dragonstone (Mikki Isle). While Pride expects Dragonstone to take improvement from the run and be better suited on softer ground, he believes both Golden Mile and Coal Crusher are primed to perform. “The one people aren’t looking at at all is Coal Crusher,” Pride said. “But his run first-up was super and he gets the blinkers straight back on.” Formerly trained by James Cummings, Golden Mile won the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at three before being retired to stud in 2024. An injury led to him being gelded and returning to training, and he showed promising signs earlier this year when placing behind Everest second favourite Joliestar in the Kingsford-Smith Cup. “I know [jockey] Adam [Hyeronimus] was really keen to ride him,” Pride said. “He’s not a bad horse on his day either, a proper Group 1 horse and most of these horses in this race can’t say the same. He’s a big, gross horse but I’ve done a fair bit with him and he is coming off a winter preparation, which always helps.” A full field of 16 will contest the Sydney Stakes, which also provides emergencies for The Everest.

Baker takes bold approach with Within The Law

Within The Law (Credit: Racing Photos)

Bjorn Baker isn’t afraid to take the unconventional route and will race three-year-old filly Within The Law (Lucky Vega) against some of Australia’s top weight-for-age stars in Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Within The Law has never faced older opposition, but that will change when she lines up against the likes of Mr Brightside (Bullbars), Fangirl (Sebring), Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai), and last year’s winner Ceolwulf (Tavistock). “It’s something that hasn’t been tried, in recent times anyway, a three-year-old filly up against the older horses,” Baker said. “It works out with timing. She was a good second in the Flight Stakes which was a relatively slowly run race. It looks to be a truly run race on Saturday. Then we have the option whether we go down to Melbourne two weeks later or we back her up in the Spring Champion [Stakes]. She is in great order and she’s very genuine. It’s a tough ask but you’ve got to be in it to win it.” Rachel King will take the ride on Within The Law, while Josh Parr partners stablemate Pericles (Street Boss), who has impressed this campaign with a Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) win and a solid third in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). “I was lucky enough to get a readymade horse off Godolphin and he’s been very straightforward,” Baker said. “He was very good in the Tramway when he won first-up and he was excellent in the Epsom Handicap when he’d had four weeks between runs. The two weeks now into the King Charles, he is perfectly set up.”

Gerringong facing Silver Eagle test

Lightly raced mare Gerringong (Blue Point) will use Saturday’s Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick as a key guide for upcoming feature race plans, with connections weighing the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) and The Invitation (1400m) among her options. Jockey Tim Clark, who partnered her when runner-up to Manaal (Tassort) in the Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m) last-start, said the assignment would be important in determining her next step. "She would need to do something pretty special on Saturday to put her hand up but I'm not saying she isn't capable of doing that," Clark said. "The other day she ran well but she'd come just come back from Melbourne. She looks like she has really blossomed in the past few weeks back in Sydney and I think she will go a lot better this weekend. Hopefully she can put her hand up for a Golden Eagle berth, or there is The Invitation as well." Gerringong is a four-time stakes placegetter from nine starts and has drawn the inside gate. She will carry 54 kilograms and Clark believes her on-pace racing style could be crucial. "We've got that weight advantage and tactically, we might have a slight advantage as far as position in the run goes," he said. "She is knocking on the door, she is lightly raced, and she is a talented mare in her own right. Hopefully she can knock one of these races over soon. She's due."

Aberlour set for Angst Stakes

Kelvin Tyler is hoping that his stakes-winning mare Aberlour (Mongolian Falcon) is a key player in the Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. As a three-year-old, the daughter of Mongolian Falcon (Fastnet Rock) was an eye-catching winner of the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) and Southland Guineas (Listed, 1600m) before joining Joe Pride’s barn at Warwick Farm. Tyler retained a 30 per cent share in Aberlour and was rapt to see the mare back near her best this campaign, winning one and placing in two of her three starts before a fourth-placed finish in the Stocks Stakes at The Valley last time out. “She had a bad draw and was three-wide most of the way, but she’s hit the line really strong,” Tyler said. “150 out she looked like she may even hold on, but with the work during the race, it probably took its toll against those good horses and I was really proud of her. Randwick is her favourite track and Alysha Collett rides her very well, she knows how she likes to be ridden. She’s got a nice draw so we’re quietly confident, you need everything to go your way in these big races but she’s going well. Joe does a great job, he’s a good person and great to deal with. I tell people that I would trust Joe Pride with my credit card, because whether it’s good news or bad news, he’s very honest.”

Agera to drop back for Matamata Cup

Agera (Credit: Race Images)

A drop back in distance should suit Tony Pike-trained Agera (Complacent) in Friday’s Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m), with the six-year-old to be the stable’s only runner at the meeting after the feature was rescheduled due to weather. Pike had originally planned to run the son of Complacent (Authorized) in the cup but was unable to book a suitable jockey, and Agera instead finished fourth in an open handicap over further ground. “The mile is his best trip, and he just doesn’t quite get 2000 metres, especially on a heavy track,” Pike said. “It’s almost two weeks between runs and dropping back to the mile should be ideal for him.” To be ridden by Matt Cartwright, Agera has five career wins, three of them during his current campaign. “He’s had a really good preparation, and it would be nice to go out on a winning note,” Pike said. “He definitely needs cut in the ground and if it looks like staying wet for the next couple of weeks, he could have another run. He’s had a pretty long, deep season so he is due a break soon.”

Ellerslie-bound three-year-olds chasing Guineas berths

Stablemates Oratia Beauty (Too Darn Hot) and Geneva (Time Test) will have opportunities to book their passages south when they step out at Ellerslie on Saturday. The former will face a rise in class in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), while Geneva will take on older opposition in the Kingmakers Syndication Handicap (1400m). Trainer Kylie Hoskin has the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hopes for the Jomara Bloodstock-bred and raced pair. Oratia Beauty capped the strong start she’s made to her career when she broke her maiden after minor placings in both of her previous appearances. “When we look back at the horses she beat, there is very good form around her,” Hoskin said. Last-start, the filly accounted for subsequent winner Kygo Star (Wootton Bassett) and Magic Carpet (Satono Aladdin), who then came out and claimed top honours in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m). “I think she does deserve her chance, and she has trained on really well,” Hoskin said. “We were going to give her another run but with the wet tracks we haven’t, and she’s fit and ready to go for Saturday.” Geneva won his only start as a two-year-old and this season his progress has been hampered by the persistent wet tracks. “His last run at Ellerslie was much better and was still a bit fierce in the running so we’ve added a nose band and in his trackwork he’s been a lot better,” Hoskin said.

Asano back in Kiwi jockey ranks

A familiar face will return to the Kiwi jockey’s room at Ellerslie on Saturday, with Kozzi Asano rejoining the ranks after a stint in South Korea. Originally hailing from Japan, the 30-year-old came to New Zealand to pursue his career as a jockey and swiftly to prominence as an apprentice, winning the apprentice jockey’s premiership in 2019/20. Before taking a contract in Korea last term, he rode a total of 336 winners in eight seasons, 20 of those at stakes level and two Group 1s. During his time in the Asian jurisdiction, Asano added a further 40 wins to his record, but with the recent birth of his second child, has returned to his property in Cambridge. “I’ve come back recently from a stint in South Korea, this is actually my maternity leave as we have recently had our second baby on the 1st of October,” Asano said. “My parents are coming over to New Zealand to help look after their grandchildren, so I thought I might as well get back into racing, not too much, but more so as a part-time job. I won’t be travelling too far and won’t be too busy, but it’ll be good to be riding. I’ve been riding trackwork for thTe Awamutu last week. I’m just slowly getting back into the fitness. I haven’t ridden in a New Zealand race for a long time, just over 15 months, so I’ll see if I can still remember what I used to do.”

HK: Voyage Bubble eyes Sha Tin Trophy redemption despite top weight

Matthew Poon believes Triple Crown-triumphant Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) can defy his mighty impost (135lb) on Sunday and improve on his second-place finish in last season’s Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m). Poon said Voyage Bubble’s exceptional ability means he has every chance of claiming victory first-up in this weekend’s feature race at Sha Tin. “I’m confident in his ability,” Poon said. “Of course, I’m a bit concerned that he’s carrying 135 [pounds] and lots of rising stars are only carrying 115. I don’t think it will be an easy race, but he’s got the ability, so I hope we can overcome the 135. I’m happy with how he’s going.” Poon, who won the 2024/25 Tony Cruz Award as the homegrown jockey with the most winners in a season, said he had noticed a gradual improvement in the seven-year-old’s condition ahead of his seasonal bow. “I trialled him once in Sha Tin [on September 30]; at that time, he wasn’t fit yet,” said Poon, who is still searching for his first winner of the 2025/26. “After that trial, we brought his fitness up and, after a little while, we galloped him on the grass. We felt happy with how he galloped – he was feeling well and wasn’t heavy. I think he’s improved after the trial. Of course, he’s still not at top fitness yet, but I’m happy to see his form is coming so hopefully he can perform well.”

UK: Delacroix and Ombudsman declared to run as Champions Day takes shape

Delacroix (Credit: Racing Post)

Delacroix (Dubawi) has been declared for the Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at Ascot on Saturday’s British Champions Day card, meaning the race will feature a third and likely final showdown between the Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) winner and Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder), who has landed the Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) and International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) in a stellar season.

The pair feature among 11 declarations, with high-class French raider Calandagan (Gleneagles) looking to continue a brilliant autumn for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m)-winning team behind Daryz (Sea The Stars) of Mickael Barzalona, Francis Graffard and Aga Khan Studs.

First Look (Lope De Vega) also runs for France while Almaqam (Lope De Vega), who beat Ombudsman at the start of the season, features for Ed Walker.

Juddmonte’s Field Of Gold (Kingman) will take on 15 rivals as he bids to bounce back to his brilliant best in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m).

The John and Thady Gosden-trained runner produced an incredible performance at Royal Ascot this summer in the St James's Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) but has not been seen since flopping when fourth in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Glorious Goodwood.

He takes on Rosallion (Blue Point), who has posted three second-place finishes at Group 1 level without winning this season. OTI Racing's Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winner Docklands (Massaat) and the in-form mare Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot) also run.

Kalpana (Study Of Man), last seen finishing seventh in the Arc, is set for a quick turnaround just 13 days from Longchamp as she bids to defend her British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) crown. No horse has successfully defended the race in 50 years and her opposition of nine includes Estrange (Night Of Thunder) and Waardah (Postponed).

Wathnan Racing have strong representation in the British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), headed by Lazzat (Territories), winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), along with last year's winner Kind Of Blue (Blue Point) and Flora Of Bermuda (Dark Angel).

Elsewhere, Trawlerman (Golden Horn) takes on just four rivals in the British Champions Long Distance Cup (Gr 1, 2m), the other Group 1 contest on the card.

US: Multiple Grade 1 winner Mindframe headlines Claiborne's 2026 roster

Claiborne Farm has announced the fees for its 2026 stallion roster, including multiple Grade 1 winner Mindframe (Constitution), whose fee will be announced following his final start in the Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del Mar next month. Grade 1 winner Prince Of Monaco (Speightstown) will stand his second season for an advertised fee of US$30,000 (approx. AU$46,250). The 2023 Del Mar Futurity (Gr 1, 7f) winner was one of North America's most popular first-year stallions during the 2025 breeding season, covering a Claiborne-record 176 mares, including 44 black-type runners. Breeders' Cup Classic winner Blame (Arch) will be offered at US$25,000 (approx. AU$38,540), pending Breeders' Cup results, while fellow Grade 1 winner Annapolis (War Front) will stand for an advertised fee of US$12,500 (approx. AU$19,270). Bright Future (Curlin) will stand for US$10,000 (approx. AU$15,420), Silver State (Hard Spun) will stand for US$7,500 (approx. AU$11,560), and War Front's (Danzig) fee has been listed as private for 2026.

US: Taylor Made Farm set fees for 2026

Taylor Made Stallions has set its 2026 stallion roster and fees for the upcoming breeding season headed by Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), who will stand for US$250,000 (approx. AU$385,030), up from US$175,000 (approx. AU$269,520) this year. The sire of nine Grade 1 winners, Not This Time is having a landmark year. He is enjoying an unprecedented season with his progeny dominating on the racetrack and delivering impressive results in the auction ring. Early Voting, a winner of the 2022 Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) and a son of leading stallion and Horse of the Year Gun Runner (Candy Ride), will stand for US$12,500 (approx. AU$19,250). Instilled Regard (Arch) and Instagrand (Into Mischief) will stand for US$8,000 (approx. AU$12,320), while Tacitus (Tapit), Dr. Schivel (Violence), Idol (Curlin) and Angel Of Empire (Classic Empire), who stood his first season at stud in 2025, will stand the upcoming season for US$5,000 (approx. AU$7,700). Meanwhile, Knicks Go's (Paynter) fee will be announced at a later date.

US: Champion Thorpedo Anna retired from racing

Thorpedo Anna (Credit: Racing Post)

Kenny McPeek has announced that American champion filly Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) has been retired from racing and will join John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farms for her broodmare career. McPeek said: "For everybody out there that's worried about her, you can rest at ease. She's fine. She has been examined by several veterinarians. Dr. [Larry] Bramlage of Rood and Riddle found some very mild bone bruising, which is consistent with horses in work at her level, and she could go back to training in 90 days, but we have opted to retire her." Her retirement was expected after McPeek suggested it was likely following her fourth in the Spinster Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Keeneland, when she finished eight and a half lengths behind shock winner Gin Gin (Hightail). A 20 per cent share in the filly will be sold at Keeneland's Championship Sale at Del Mar later this month. Thorpedo Anna retires with 12 wins and two placings from 16 starts, including ten Graded wins. The filly raced for Brookdale Racing, Magdalena Racing, Mark Edwards, and Judy Hicks for much of her career before John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings joined them in ownership this summer. Hicks bred the seven-time Grade 1 winner, whom McPeek bought for US$40,000 in 2022 from Grovendale Sales at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale. Her dam, the Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) mare Sataves, was named Broodmare of the Year in 2024.

'Getting the better of him hasn’t been easy this week' - Boughey digs deep to secure 800,000gns Night Of Thunder colt

Anthony Stroud has proved a hard man to pass at Tattersalls over the last week, particularly when bidding on behalf of Godolphin. However, George Boughey served the leading agent a rare reversal of fortune when landing the Night Of Thunder colt out of Quenelle D'Or at 800,000gns early in the final session of Book 2.

The youngster is the first foal out of the Listed-winning daughter of Golden Horn, who shares her page with Stanley House Stud’s most famous recent graduate Ouija Board. He was sold through New England Stud and bred by Lady Riblat and Stanley House.

Boughey, who was standing on the opposite side on the packed gangway of his main market rival, has enjoyed recent success with the progeny of Night Of Thunder courtesy of Bow Echo.

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s homebred was last seen maintaining his unbeaten record in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes. Wednesday’s six-figure signing will now sport the same owner’s familiar yellow and black colours.

“He’s a lovely colt,” said Boughey. “We had to go a lot further than we thought we would but we had some stiff competition. It looked like Anthony Stroud over there, and getting the better of him hasn’t been easy this week. He’s been bought for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and this horse looks very similar to his Bow Echo. He picked him out and I’m delighted to train the horse for him.

“We’ve had three or four by Night Of Thunder who’ve all won their maiden but Bow Echo is the first one to go and look like he’s better than that. This colt is from a good family, the mare was a Listed winner, and he’s just a lovely colt. I think he’s a summer two-year-old onwards but he’s got a patient owner so we’ll try to emulate what Bow Echo has done.”

On the price, Boughey added: “I had to pick the phone up twice to the owner because the horse went well over budget, but he wanted the horse and I think he might’ve known who he was taking on. It’s great to add this horse to the barn.”

A delighted Peter Stanley of New England Stud reflected on the transaction by saying: “For a first foal to fetch that sort of price is magnificent, it’s really thrilling, but then Night Of Thunder is an incredible stallion. He’s upgrading his mares to an extraordinary level and we’re lucky we’ve taken the punt and used him.

“I thought this would be one of the nicest horses in the ring this week, and I said to my brother [Lord Derby] that this horse could make any amount of money – you start at a level and you just need two people to lock horns. We were lucky that two great judges were there and did just that. I do think he’ll be a racehorse. He has it all, he has class and he has a lovely outlook, we’ve been excited about him for a long time.”

Coolmore move for Caburn’s Camelot half-brother

A bold bit of pinhooking was rewarded when Alex Elliott went to 475,000gns to secure the Camelot colt out of Tigrilla from Stanley Lodge. The youngster, whose dam won a Deauville Listed race at two, saw his value increase markedly against the 80,000gns he fetched at last year’s foal sales, where the docket was signed by NWC Bloodstock and Highpoint.

The colt is a sibling to three winners, including the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes scorer Caburn, and was secured on behalf of Coolmore’s MV Magnier and Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm.

“He’s been bought for MV and White Birch and he’s going to go to Ballydoyle,” said Elliott. “Paul Shanahan, MV and the whole team thought he was the standout colt today. Obviously he’s by Camelot out of a black-type mare who’s produced a good Twilight Son. He’s a gorgeous horse and was extremely well bought by Nick Cope and a couple of other boys.

“A lot of the Camelots look like staying types but I think the mare is going to speed this guy up a good bit. You could be looking at anything from seven furlongs upwards as a two-year-old then a mile plus as an older horse. We all like the idea of the speed the mare was putting into the mix.”

Pinhooker Nick Cope, who manages Stanley Lodge, said: “Myself and Tom and David Brickley of Ard Erin Stud buy a few foals together, and sometimes we unearth a couple of nice ones on the way. But this horse was more than that: he’s a real deal of a horse. He didn’t put in a bad show here and when they do that, you can’t ask for much more. When it all works, it’s amazing what can happen in this ring.”

Cope also reflected on the scale of their initial investment. He added: “It was at the top of our budget. We gave a lot of money before on a foal and got stung on him and we just thought what on earth were we doing spending that sort of money. We reassessed, brought it back down to earth and planned to buy a Book 2 horse with a pedigree or physical who might become a Book 1 type if there was an update. We landed on selling in Book 2 for this lad as we wanted to stand out. Thank God it’s worked.”

Ryan reloads

Kevin Ryan re-entered the fray to spend 400,000gns on the Starspangledbanner filly out of Reyaadah from Manister House Stud. Not only was the dam placed in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes, her four winners at paddocks include the Listed-placed Tamreer.

“She’s a lovely, athletic filly with a great temperament,” said Ryan. “I haven’t had many by Starspangledbanner, they’re hard to find, but I’m delighted to get her. She looks a very racy filly and hopefully she turns out that way.”

The 400,000gns mark was hit for a second time when Amo Racing secured the Starman half-brother to the Listed-placed Letherfly from Gerrardstown House Stud. Amo’s in-house trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy said: “He was Robson Aguiar’s favourite since the weekend. He knew the horse beforehand and he knows these types of horses so it made sense to buy him.”

The colt is the sixth Starman yearling Amo Racing have bought at this year’s Book 2, a group that cost a combined 1.98 million guineas.

Cambridge Stud’s first-season sire Sword Of State (Snitzel) got his stallion career off to a brilliant start when he chalked up his first individual stakes winner courtesy Torture’s dominant display in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Trained by Lindsay Park, the juvenile filly showed talent in spades to finish 0.5 lengths ahead of her well-related stable companion Free Flying, who is by Sword Of State’s sire, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

The Ciaron Maher-trained Toronado Valley (Too Darn Hot) finished the same distance away in third.

Ben Hayes said he was not expecting Torture to be so early.

“It was nice to run one-two in the race, and to get some black type with a filly is very important,” he said.

“I thought she won very well. She loomed into it and hit the front and did everything right today, so it’s a big thrill for the whole team. Two-year-olds are something that we really enjoy doing, and coming out and winning the first two-year-old stakes race of the season is a big thrill.

Winner at 2, A$120,750, in 2025-26, MRC Debutant S., L.

“She is well-bred and now a stakes winner, so there are a couple of big ticks there and she is a beautiful looking horse with much more improvement to come, which is exciting.”

Bred and co-owned by Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Torture is a half-sister to Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ruthless Dame (Tavistock), with the pair out of the stakes-placed Keeper (Danehill) mare Ruthless Lady. Ruthless Dame was bought by Kasumi Yoshida for $2 million at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale last year.

Torture was raised and sold by Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore, with Lindsay Park and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock going to NZ$250,000 to secure the filly at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sale earlier this year.
