‘I really feel he's a top-four chance’ – Stokes set for big day at Caulfield with Deakin and Ferivia

Pakenham-based trainer Phillip Stokes is set for a busy day at Caulfield on Saturday as he saddles up live chances in both the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the card’s feature, the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).

Stokes is currently operating at a strike-rate of 20.8 per cent this season, having sent out 72 runners as of the end of play on Friday for 15 winners and a further 15 placings.

His main runners on Saturday’s Caulfield Cup card are the OTI Racing-owned Deakin (Australia) in the cup itself, and Guineas hopeful Ferivia (Astern) - who runs for the Brook family’s Saddlers Knife syndicate.

Ferivia was priced at $15 for the Guineas on Friday which saw her sit on the fifth line of betting behind raging $2.10 favourite Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice), despite the Stokes-trained filly having landed the Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) at Sandown-Hillside on her latest start.

Sent off at $11 that day, the daughter of Astern (Medaglia D’Oro) looked beaten in the straight in truth, but dug deep to tenaciously fend off all challengers and record a narrow 0.1 lengths success over Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) - who re-opposes on Saturday.

Despite the race’s name, the Thousand Guineas Prelude - which was first run in 1965 - has seen only four fillies go on to claim glory in the main event itself the following month; Irish Lights (Fastnet Rock), Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice), Azzurro (Bluebird) and Bianco Flyer (Godswalk).

What's On

However, as poor a record that may be, it has not stopped the Prelude winners running very well in the Guineas itself, with many going on to place (and at big odds) in the $1.5 million Classic.

Ferivia is already a dual winner at Group level, having also landed the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) back on August 16, and Stokes feels that his runner is a fair each-way hope in the Group 1 contest.

“She's been in work a long time, but holding her condition well, still working well, we think she'll run a strong mile,” Stokes told ANZ News.

“The top weight [Apocalyptic] looks very hard to beat, but we are drawn [barrier three] to get a good run, and I think she's a good each-way chance.

“She won well at Caulfield [in the Guineas Prelude]. The horse from Sydney [Apocalyptic] still has to come down and go this way, I suppose, so we’ve got a few things in our favour. But she's very tough and I think she can get the mile.”

Out to the mile for the first time under regular rider Lachlan Neindorf, Ferivia could be a landmark winner for the Brook’s family - who also bred the filly.

“It would be huge to get a Group 1 win for them,” Stokes added. “They’re big supporters of our stable and David [Brook] breeds all his own, he does all the pedigree stuff and here we are.”

Just two races later and Stokes will be having a crack at another Group 1 contest, this time in the feature Caulfield Cup with OTI’s Irish import, Deakin.

The gelded six-year-old was twice a winner in his native Ireland when trained by Joseph O’Brien and has taken to Australian racing well, scoring three times from eight starts - including stakes victories in the Torney Night Cup (Listed, 2500m) and Roy Higgins Quality (Listed, 2600m).

The latter of those wins secured Deakin a spot in next month’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and that race is the main target for the gelding’s season, but not before a shot at Half Yours (St Jean) and co in this weekend’s time-honoured handicap under his regular partner Daniel Stackhouse - where he is available at odds of $17.

Deakin has made three starts so far this campaign and has improved with each of those, running a first-up 12th over 1400 metres in a Benchmark 100, before a seventh over 1700 metres at Flemington and a last-start sixth in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) - where he was beaten less than three lengths by the winner and late Caulfield and Melbourne Cup absentee Sir Delius (Frankel) and just 0.1 lengths behind fourth placegetter Half Yours.

“I think [the Turnbull] is the right form line going into this race. He is still yet to be proven at the elite-level, but he has prepped up beautifully for it,” Stokes said.

“We obviously didn't have to rush things because we've already got his ticket into the Melbourne Cup. He's drawn [barrier seven] to get a beautiful run and I really feel he's a top-four chance.

“I think the 2400 [metres] is perfect. We have yet to see if he can run two miles, but he's relaxing better. We've just had a little gear change of a kineton noseband and he's just dropping his head that bit better and coming back, so that's pleasing.

“We're really happy with him. We are hoping to settle three back one off and that'll be perfect.”

Saturday’s feature races are not the only contests at Caulfield in which Stokes will field runners, with fellow Brook’s family-owned Matahga (Tivaci) going in the card-opening Lamaro's Hotel Plate (1400m) and Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) lining up in the Alinghi Stakes (Listed, 1100m) four races later.

The former will be making his first start as a three-year-old, having last been seen winning the Oaklands Plate (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville on June 28, a victory that took his overall record to two wins and a second from just three outings.

A colt by Tivaci (High Chaparral), Matahga was purchased by Stokes for NZ$80,000 during Book 1 of the 2024 Karaka Yearling Sale out of Waikato Stud and has had two recent jumpouts in the lead-up to this weekend’s $150,000 plate.

“He's fit enough. He just found those jump outs a bit sharp for him. I think he's going to be a nice mile, probably a 2000-metre horse, so we are probably setting him for the Sandown Guineas,” Stokes said.

“We just hope he can be running on and potentially running a place. Lachie [Lachlan Neindorf] knows him well. He's a nice middle-distance, three-year-old horse and potentially could be on an SA Derby path in the autumn.”

While holding high hopes for Matahga, Stokes is hoping that his five-year-old mare Stretan Angel can bounce back from a disappointing last-start 11th in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) as she drops back in grade for Saturday’s Alinghi.

“She is definitely better than that [in the Gilgai],” Stokes said. “She drew the inside, so elected to drag her back to get to the outside of then and see if she could let down, and she let down, but the bird had already flown.

“But the start before she ran really well [when second in The Taggart]. So I'm sure she can bounce back.

“Her work was good, we have taken the blinkers off again. She's just got to have the race shape with good speed and she can figure in the finish. Her best is definitely good enough, but we just only have been seeing it periodically.

“The pressure will be on, so that will be good for her. She'll be second half or even a bit further back and getting to the outside and hopefully show that good turn and foot she's got.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Sir Delius ruled out of Caulfield and Melbourne Cups

Sir Delius (Credit: Racing Photos)

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) favourite Sir Delius (Frankel) has been ruled out of the race by the Racing Victoria (RV) stewards after failing independent specialist scans.

It comes as the $5 shot was set to warm up for Australia's biggest race in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), for which he also headed the betting, next weekend.

Racing Victoria announced on Friday that the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained superstar showed he was currently at heightened risk of injury after undertaking a CT and PET scan.

Bought for a record-breaking 1.3 million guineas at the 2024 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, Sir Delius has thrived since joining Australia from Jean-Claude Rouget in France. He stepped forward from his eighth-place finish in last season's Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) to win two Group 1s including at Flemington, the home of the Melbourne Cup, last time.

His absence has led to Joseph O'Brien's Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) being promoted to a general $5 favourite for the Melbourne Cup. O'Brien has won the race twice in recent years with Rekindling (High Chaparral) (2017) and Twilight Payment (Teofilo) (2020).

A RV release read: "Having reviewed the PET scan results alongside the CT scan results, the panel members have advised RV Veterinary Services that they remain of the view that Sir Delius is currently at heightened risk of injury.

"Following advice from RV Veterinary Services in relation to the specialist opinions from the imaging panel, RV Stewards have stood down Sir Delius from competing in the remainder of the 2025 Spring Racing Carnival.

"The stewards have appraised the connections of the key information that they relied upon in making their decision."

Relation to Caulfield Guineas winner headlines October (Late) Sale

Autumn Boy (Credit:  Racing Photos)

A winning half-sister to last weekend’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) and a host of other interesting racing prospects headline a diverse catalogue for the Inglis Digital October (Late) Online Sale.

Pacific Cross (Merchant Navy) received the ultimate pedigree update six days ago when her half-brother Autumn Boy won the stallion-making Caulfield Guineas in dominant fashion. She is being offered as a racing and breeding prospect.

Six shares in Farnicle (Farnan) are also available in the October (Late) Sale.

Farnicle finished second to subsequent Group 1 winner Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) as a juvenile in May and has resumed in fine style at three, finishing close-up behind the likes of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Marhoona (Snitzel) and Beadman (Snitzel) at Listed level before running second in the $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m) last weekend.

He will be nominated for the $1 million Callander-Presnell (Gr 2, 1600m) to be run at Randwick on October 25.

There are five five per cent shares and one 2.5 per cent share of Farnicle catalogued for sale.

Also in the auction is a Coolmore unreserved racehorse reduction including the likes of Congressman – a three-year-old Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt that has won one of his two career starts – the $1.3 million Justify (Scat Daddy) yearling Constellation, three-year-old Frankel (Galileo) colt Sarapo and unbeaten Justify four-year-old Gatekeeper.

In total 298 lots have been finalised for the October (Late) Sale – 172 racehorses (68 race fillies), 61 racehorse shares, 41 broodmares, 14 yearlings, six unraced stock and four two-year-olds.

Click here to view the catalogue, which is now live and open for bidding at inglisdigital.com.

The final countdown of bidding for the October (Late) Online Sale begins from 10am on Wednesday.

Schiller unfazed by wide draw for Briasa in Everest

Tyler Schiller is confident Briasa (Smart Missile) can overcome another wide draw when he takes on Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) in Saturday’s The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick. Briasa was forced back to last from a wide gate when first-up in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in the autumn before charging home for fourth, but Schiller says circumstances are different this time. "He's into his preparation this time, he's not first-up, so I have no fears about using him a bit early to be in his position," Schiller said. "The closer he can be the better. Hopefully not absorbing all the pressure but somewhere around the mark where he can strike." A dual Randwick 1200-metre winner, Briasa captured both the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in the autumn and the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last start, confirming his credentials for the $20 million feature. In contrast, Ka Ying Rising’s only Randwick appearance came in a barrier trial defeat, though the unbeaten Hong Kong star has strung together 13 consecutive wins since January last year to earn his title as the world’s top-rated sprinter. "He is definitely beatable," Schiller said. "It's just whether he gets in his comfort zone or not, whether he loves the track, the conditions, pressure from the other speed horses. He is the top-rated sprinter in the world so it's hard to go past him and he's going to be hard to get past." Ka Ying Rising dominates betting at $1.70, with Briasa rated a $16 chance, but Schiller has full faith in his mount, whom he has partnered in nine of 12 starts for six wins. "He's flying," he said. "He blew out a bit first-up but second-up I didn't feel any signs of weakness. He felt like he was still powering through the line. He is a one-of-a-kind horse and I'm glad to be the one on him."

Purton craving Everest success

Already one of the most decorated jockeys on the international stage, Zac Purton says success aboard Ka Ying Rising in the $20 million The Everest on Saturday at Randwick in Sydney, Australia would represent a career pinnacle. With a record 1,897 Hong Kong wins and 47 Group 1 victories around the world, Purton said victory in The Everest “would sit right up there”. “The rate that it [The Everest] has grown in Australia has been quite phenomenal. The field they get every year, the interest the race creates and the money that it’s worth, it’s up there with the elite races in the world now,” the eight-time Hong Kong champion jockey said. “My phone doesn’t normally ring as much as it has been in the past week. I’ve done a lot of interviews – radio, video, journalists calling – and then I’ve just been watching a lot of it on social media myself. It’s great to see how much attention it’s created in the mainstream media in Australia. They’ve really grabbed hold of him [Ka Ying Rising] and grabbed hold of the race. It’s putting a lot of extra eyeballs on our sport, which is a good thing. I can’t remember a race and especially a horse going into a race with as much attention as what he’s been able to create. It’s been good but obviously we have a job to do and that’s what I’m more concerned about.”

Pride Of Jenni task no barrier for Fangirl

Chris Waller is unfazed by the prospect of taking on bold frontrunner Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) in Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, confident Fangirl (Sebring) can handle whatever tempo eventuates. The pair have met three times, with Fangirl finishing ahead only once, in last year’s Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. However, it was Pride Of Jenni’s all-the-way demolition in the 2024 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) that left a mark, when she raced clear to defeat Fangirl’s stablemate Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) by more than six lengths. Waller isn’t expecting a repeat performance this time. “It has brought her undone in the past but we know about Pride Of Jenni now,” Waller said. “We know not to let her out of our sights. If you let Pride Of Jenni out of your sights you won’t get past her. Fangirl is a great mare and a mile is her right distance.” A proven performer at Randwick, Fangirl has won nine of her 12 career races at the track, including the 2023 edition of Saturday’s contest when she defeated the re-opposing Mr Brightside (Bullbars). She heads into Saturday’s race off a strong last-start win, and while drawn wide in barrier 11, Waller is unconcerned. “The win last start probably helps her confidence and I’m not worried about the draw, there will be plenty of speed on,” he said.

Vauban primed for Caulfield Cup

Vauban (Credit: Racing Photos)

Gai Waterhouse believes Vauban (Galiway) is ready to deliver in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup as he continues his path towards another shot at the Melbourne Cup. The imported stayer has been consistent this campaign without much luck, and Waterhouse said the gelding has thrived since arriving in Melbourne last week. “His coat is gleaming. He’s a very happy horse,” she said. “Blake [Shinn] rode him the other day and was over the moon with him. It’s a hard race. They’ve all got their chance, and they’ve all got their reason for being there. They’ve been in the right races leading into the Cup to be competitive. But Vauban, he’s really happy, he’s healthy and he’s sound. He’s ready to pounce.” Waterhouse expects barrier 13 to give Shinn the flexibility to find the right run. “I don’t think he’s had the right positioning in races. He’s been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that’s just life sometimes,” she said. “Saturday’s race will suit him well. There will be a good pace on. Blake will understand that. He’s a horse that has travelled the world, so why won’t he handle Caulfield. He’s there to win, but it will also set him up nicely for Flemington.”

Mating Call faces wide barrier in Thousand Guineas

Mating Call (Brazen Beau) will tackle another wide draw as she prepares for her first Group 1 assignment in Saturday’s Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield, marking the fourth consecutive start the filly has drawn a wide gate. The Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray-trained filly won her maiden on debut at Balaklava last month from gate 11 of 14 and followed up with gate ten of 11 at start two. Most recently, she was third from gate eight in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington on October 4 under Jamie Melham. On Saturday, she will jump from gate ten of 12. "Sandown wasn't a great experience for her as she got exposed, but in a good way, she's a very competitive filly," MacGillivray said. "Once she gets open air, she wants to get going, so you can't knock her for that, but I would like to see her drawn a bit better where she can just jump and be smothered up and get a chance to relax. Jamie said, once she found a backside to follow last time, she did drop her head, but by then it was time to get going again. Generally, these races at Caulfield are run with pressure, so I think that is what we would like to see and there's a few there that are going to the mile for the first time which makes it interesting." MacGillivray took advantage of a Tuesday morning gallop at Caulfield, reporting that the filly showed plenty of character while working alongside her stablemate The Map (Alpine Eagle). "She doesn't appear to have taken a step backwards," MacGillivray said. "It's not a bad effort to go from a maiden to a Group 1 in four starts but she gives every indication that she's going to cope, so let's go."

Gothic next for Coolmore-bound McGaw

Last start Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner McGaw (I Am Immortal) will use Saturday’s Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield as a steppingstone to his first Group 1 assignment in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Purchased for just $14,000 as a yearling, McGaw has progressed rapidly and impressed in his latest outing. Emma-Lee Browne, who trains the gelding in partnership with her husband David, said the Gothic Stakes is both a test and a preparation for the big spring target. "We couldn't be happier with him," Browne told Racing.com. "We were in two minds whether we started him again before heading to the Coolmore. I think just his style of running, the way he bounced through it, probably the four-week gap was going to be too much for him. We're almost treating this as just a steppingstone but obviously it is still a good race so we're hopefully pretty competitive." Damian Lane’s absence has led to a new rider in Lachlan Neindorf, who Browne says has quickly adapted to the horse. "We've had a change of jockey with Damian being away with Lachy Neindorf, but he's ridden him twice now so we're fairly confident he knows him quite well," she said. Browne also outlined the conditions that suit McGaw best. "I think probably where he can get out and roll a little bit," she said. "We've seen he can be quite difficult at settling, it's not that he doesn't want to, he just doesn't know what's going on! I think the straight racing, now that he's seen it, is probably good for him."

Autumn Mystery on Derby path

Mornington trainer Rory Hunter is excited to have Autumn Mystery (The Autumn Sun) contest Saturday’s Sportsbet Classic (2000m) at Caulfield as the final lead-up to the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on November 1. Hunter, who began training independently in 2022 after a lifetime in racing, is aiming for his first stakes victory with Autumn Mystery, who has progressed from racing in Victoria’s premier two-year-old events to now being a genuine Derby contender. "It's great to be a part of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and have a horse that is a live chance in the race," Hunter said. "When we brought him, we thought he would be a late maturing three-year-old, but once he got to the track, he showed he was a real mature type and showing the signs of being a two-year-old as well. It was great to get the opportunity to have a crack at the Blue Diamond knowing that in six months' time he was going to be a better horse. He's just shown maturity the whole way through and putting it together on the racetrack." Autumn Mystery finished midfield in the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) and was then spelled, with a Derby campaign always in mind. The gelding finally broke through in his eighth start, winning the Victoria Derby Preview (1800m) at Flemington on September 21. "He was knocking on the door quite a few times, but sometimes he just switches off too much," Hunter said. "That can be a good thing because when you get to 2500 metres at this stage of their careers not many horses are going to stay that distance. If he can do that in two weeks' time, that will hold him in good stead. We knew the win was going to come eventually and thank God it was at Flemington."

Gluyas eyes Hill Smith Stakes hat-trick

Andrew Gluyas will bid for a third straight victory in the Hill Smith Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Morphettville on Saturday, launching a three-pronged attack in the three-year-old feature. The Morphettville trainer has enjoyed a strong record in the race, having won with Air Assault (Justify) in 2023 and Goldrush Guru (American Pharoah), who would go on to land the VRC Derby, in 2024. This year, Gluyas will saddle up Goldrush Guru’s younger half-brother Golden Guru (Toronado) alongside fillies Sassy Sophie (Churchill) and Freedom Flame (Ghaiyyath). "We've had a bit of luck in the race over time and we've been fortunate to have a couple of good horses win it in recent years," Gluyas said. "It's always a good turning point of our spring for horses that are bred to get over a bit of ground." Gluyas identified Golden Guru as his leading chance despite the gelding still chasing his maiden victory after four starts. The Toronado (High Chaparral) three-year-old found the line strongly over 1600 metres last start after being shuffled back to last in a slowly run race. "He was a little unlucky last start when he got to the mile for the first time," Gluyas said. "He was strong to the line the other day and we're hoping he can have a clear run on Saturday. The other two fillies did get their chance in the race [last start] so you would think that Golden Guru is the horse that might stand up at the moment."

Wootton Bassett sires impressive trial quinella

Agera (Credit: Race Images)

Late Coolmore Stud stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) sired a quinella at the Warwick Farm trials on Friday when the Peter Snowden-trained Pearl Of Dubai led home the Brad Widdup-trained Somerford in the 805-metre heat. A homebred for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Pearl Of Dubai is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner turned Coolmore Stud-based stallion Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry), Group 2 winner Enaad (High Chaparral) and Listed-scoring pair Ghaanati (Deep Impact) and Al Aneed (More Than Ready). Meanwhile, Somerford was purchased by Mulberry Racing for $600,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Widden Stud draft. The other juvenile trial was landed by the Blake Ryan-trained Green Kirk (Ole Kirk), a $320,000 Inglis Classic Sale purchase for Magus Equine.

Racing mourns John ‘Crewy’ Brady

The Australian racing community is mourning the loss of John Brady, affectionately known as ‘Crewy’, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 89. Gai Waterhouse paid tribute via social media to the longtime Tulloch Lodge stalwart, who began at the stable as a young man. “He was loved, admired and respected by all the boys and girls who worked with him over many decades. His work ethic was second to none, and even in his late 80s he could be seen carrying buckets of oats from the back of the stables to the top,” Waterhouse said. Brady’s nickname, given by TJ Smith, stayed with him throughout his career. Waterhouse recalled a fond memory from her youth: “One day a letter came for John Brady, so I went into the stable and asked Crewy ‘do you know John Brady?’ to which he piped up, ‘That’s me!’”. Recognised for his dedication and intelligence, Brady was recently nominated for the Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff Awards, travelling with his grandson to the Gold Coast to claim second prize one year before winning first the following year. “He was always very philosophical about things and had an amazingly retentive memory, so if ever I needed advice Crewy was the man to go to,” Waterhouse said. Brady will be remembered by his family and many longtime Tulloch Lodge colleagues, including John Livinstone, Dave Meijer, Mel Norton, Damien Gaffney, Sylvie Katsiaris, Steve Dennis, Steve O’Halloran, Tania Rouse, Ian Slater and Killian Lofty.

New Zealand

Four for Complacent

Complacent (Authorized) scored his fourth individual stakes winner when the Tony Pike-trained Agera (6 g ex Shelly Bee by Pentire) took out the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) on Friday. The six-year-old gelding defeated Electric Time (Telperion) by 0.1 lengths with a further 0.2 lengths back to Above The Clouds (Turn Me Loose) in third. “He didn’t look like he was any chance turning for home,” said Pike. “It was a very good effort to sprint the way he did and make up that amount of ground off a slow tempo. He’s obviously racing in career-best form this time in. The ability has always been there, but he had a few soundness issues as a young horse. He’s matured through those now, and as a six-year-old, he’s become more of a battle-hardened racehorse. He needs a little bit of give in the ground, so we were thinking we might turn him out after today if it seemed like the rain was stopping and the tracks were drying out. But after he’s won so well today, and with the possibility of some rain around in the lower North Island towards the end of next week, we might consider giving him one more run in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham next weekend.” A $70,000 Karaka purchase for Waikato Bloodstock, Agera is out of Shelly Bee (Pentire), making him a half-brother to Listed winner Ima Roca Bee (El Roca).

El Vencedor chasing Ellerslie milestone

El Vencedor (Shocking) could become only the second horse to win four Group 1 races at Ellerslie when he contests Saturday’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m). The reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year has already recorded three Group 1 wins at the Auckland track, including back-to-back victories in the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and a triumph in the WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m), as well as a Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa. Trainer Stephen Marsh is confident the seven-year-old can improve on his early-season form, which included a fifth in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie and a seventh in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Te Rapa. “I’ve been happy with his performances in both of those first two legs of the Triple Crown,” Marsh said. “His first-up run in the Proisir at Ellerslie was great, and then he wasn’t bad in the Mile at Te Rapa either. I think that race just showed that he really prefers better footing these days. He’ll get that at Ellerslie. As far as everything he’s doing at home goes, he’s just kept getting better and better with each race under his belt. Wiremu Pinn rides him again on Saturday, he gets on well with the horse. I think El Vencedor could be the real improver heading into the third leg of the series.”

Marsh set for exciting day at Ellerslie

Marsh also has a strong team supporting him across the card. Little Black Dress (Snitzel), a last-start Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 1400m) placegetter, will wear blinkers in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) alongside debut winner Well Written (Written Tycoon) . “Little Black Dress was much better last start and wasn’t beaten far by those two top fillies [Tajana and Lollapalooza],” Marsh said. “She was still a bit wayward, so we’ve added blinkers. She’s galloped in blinkers and seems to have her mind a bit more on the job. I think she’s really improved. Well Written is a lovely filly and won brilliantly on debut. She’s taking on the big girls now, but she’s pretty exciting.”

Lollapalooza aims for revenge in Soliloquy Stakes

After being narrowly beaten by Tajana (Darci Brahma) in the Sunline Vase at Ellerslie four weeks ago, Lollapalooza (El Roca) will look to turn the tables in Saturday’s Soliloquy Stakes over the same course and distance. Lollapalooza holds slight favouritism for Saturday’s Soliloquy, with TAB quoting her at $3.10 to Tajana’s $3.40, while both remain favourites for the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton on November 8. Graham Richardson, who co-trains Lollapalooza with Rogan Norvall, is eager for a rematch but acknowledges the race could be more competitive than a straight two-horse battle. “It was a really good race last time between a couple of classy fillies, and I’m looking forward to seeing them clash again on Saturday,” Richardson said. “But Stephen Marsh also has a filly in there that looks pretty smart, so it’s going to be an interesting race. We couldn’t be happier with Lollapalooza. She’s come through the Sunline very well. We gave her a couple of quiet days after that race and then started building her up again. She’s been working nicely. This is a good race to target in its own right, and all going well, it should also set her up nicely for the 1,000 Guineas down in Christchurch. She’s booked to fly down on the 5th of November, and then the plan is to run in the Guineas on the 8th and fly back again on the 10th.”

Best yet to come from quirky stayer Danjuro

Promising stayer Danjuro (Saxon Warrior) has been a work in progress with time expected to further improve his racing manners. The five-year-old has shown his talent with four wins on the board and the promise of adding to that record when he steps out in the Waverley Cup (2200m) on Sunday. “He’s always shown ability, but he is quirky and he ran off at Wellington one day,” said Peter Didham, who trains in partnership with his son Trent. “He’s done a couple of odd things and can be on and off the bridle, he’s like a big baby. A horse like this probably wouldn’t have been broken in until he was three or four in the old days, he’s a beautiful horse but big and gangly.” Danjuro posted his third middle-distance success last time out and the winning margin of 0.2 lengths didn’t do the gelding justice. “At Otaki, he was going to win by three lengths and then he just switched off and won by a head,” Didham said. “Racing and time will sort that out I feel, we’ll just take him along quietly this year and I think next year he could end up a better cups horse. I always thought he’d be a stayer with his body frame, and we work him like that. I’m happy with where he’s at and when he behaves himself in his races, he’s got it left at the finish.”

HK: Size hoping weight and Kingscote can overcome Red Lion's tricky draw

John Size says the generous handicap that Red Lion (Belardo) will receive and the services of “perfect” partner Richard Kingscote might be enough to overcome a tricky draw in the Sha Tin Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). In a race expected to be run at a strong clip, drawing gate 13 might have scuppered the chances of his Group 1-winning gelding in Sunday’s feature. But the consistent six-year-old will bear just 119lb – the lightest impost he’s carried in almost 22 months – and Size says he’s seen some improvement over the off-season. “The handicap’s going to help him out a little bit,” Size said. “He’s a little bit one-paced, Red Lion. I’m not sure if he can get up in a close enough position to whack away and win a race at 1400 [metres]. But at 1600 [metres] – now that he's a more mature horse – he’s probably got some more advantage. He’s had a few trials, he’s done a bit of work and he’s in good enough shape to go to the races. He’ll give a good account of himself.”

IRE: Aga Khan draft highlights Goffs Autumn Horses In Training catalogue

A strong draft from the Aga Khan Studs headlines this year’s Goffs Autumn Horses In Training Sale, which takes place on November 3. Among the lots on offer is Esherann, a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt and two-time winner who won over a mile at the Curragh on his most recent start. Tangapour, another by Wootton Bassett, was a close second in the Royal Whip Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at the Curragh. Meanwhile, Reyenzi (Saxon Warrior) was a five-length winner of his maiden on his second start and was first past the post in the Gallinule Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at the Curragh next time out before being demoted due to interference. Goffs group chief executive Henry Beeby said: “The Goffs Autumn Horses In Training Sale consistently delivers winners under both codes and we are pleased to present another quality catalogue featuring drafts from many of Ireland’s leading training and breeding operations. The prelude to the Autumn Yearling Sale, the Autumn Horses In Training Sale is a key part of what has become a vibrant and hugely popular week at Kildare Paddocks that attracts strong interest from the domestic and international markets." The sale, which takes place from 10am on November 3, will be immediately followed by the Autumn Yearling Sale which runs until November 5.
