Bigger and better expected from Ole Kirk after ballistic start to stud life

Vinery Stud ecstatically cheered home a winner on Saturday when their star stallion Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) landed his first elite success with Ole Dancer’s triumph in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

What's On

With exquisite symmetry, Ole Kirk’s breakthrough top-tier victory as a stallion came at the the scene of his greatest triumph - the Caulfield 1600 metres - where he landed the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2020.

And the victory - his fifth stakes winner from 49 runners at a whopping 10.2 per cent - has reinforced the view that even though Ole Kirk has made a ballistic start to stud life, things will only grow bigger and better.

With four two-year-old stakes winners among 32 runners from his first crop - at 12.5 per cent - Ole Kirk claimed the first season sires’ title last term. As of Saturday night, he’s also on top of the sophomore table as he strives to complete the double this season.

Just as Australia was looking for new sires to step into the void amid the closing chapters of the careers of veterans such as Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Fastnet Rock (Danehill), it looks like a couple have.

To get a Group 1 winner in the spring, it just ticks it off beautifully, really. And I think there’s a lot more to come

Adam White

Vinery General Manager

It was a joyous afternoon in the Vinery box at Randwick after Ole Dancer - bred and part-owned by Ole Kirk shareholder and former Vinery co-owner Neil Werrett - prevailed by 0.35 lengths as second favourite in a gripping home straight battle with odds-on chance Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice), after the pair led for most of the race.

Werrett couldn’t be in the box to watch the event with White and Vinery part-owner Steve McCann. He was instead in the Randwick mounting yard ahead of watching Briasa (Smart Missile) run in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) in the slot he possessed with McCann and long-time associates Max Whitby and Col Madden, the two other co-owners of Ole Dancer.

Briasa couldn’t bring any Everest success, finishing eighth, but the victory of the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Ole Dancer was glorious compensation.

“They’re two very high-class fillies,” White said of Ole Dancer and Apocalyptic. “It was a great duel down the straight, and Ole Dancer got the upper hand and outstayed the other one.

“It’s great to see that sort of toughness in the progeny of Ole Kirk. But also just to get up to that mile, that he was very effective at, looked suitable. He won the Golden Rose and followed up with a Caulfield Guineas win, so for his first Group 1 winner to come over a mile at Caulfield is probably very fitting.

Ole Dancer (Credit: Vinery)

“Ole Kirk demonstrated he was very effective over a mile, and now his stock look like they’re going to be the same.”

Vinery expects the stars to continue to emerge for the stallion, who’s covering a book capped at 150 mares this spring.

Ole Kirk will likely have Legacy Bound running in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on November 1. The Rob Griffiths-trained, Vinery-owned gelding is currently a $15 chance.

Phillip Stokes’s Regal Award, born and raised at Vinery, failed to gain a start in the Caulfield Guineas as an emergency, but instead came out at the same track last Wednesday and won a three-year-old Benchmark 70 over the same 1600-metre trip - by 7.5 lengths.

Bjorn Baker’s Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner O’ Ole is nearing a comeback after winning a Rosehill barrier trial on October 13.

Ole Kirk also had two unraced offspring score impressive wins at Warwick Farm’s barrier trials on Friday, with the Blake Ryan-trained two-year-old colt Green Kirk scoring, and the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained filly Gatwick beating the boys in a three-year-old heat.

He’s our next sire coming through and if he can start the way Ole Kirk has, we’ll be really happy

Adam White

Vinery General Manager

And while Ole Kirk’s early strides have been strong, they may have been even more emphatic if not for the tragic early loss through a drowning accident of King Kirk, winner of the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on his debut.

“To get four stakes winners in his first crop of two-year-olds was just tremendous, and it started right from the first two-year-old races last year,” White told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“His success as a young stallion was fairly instant. But the most exciting part is his progeny look like they’ll get better as they get older, and get out to trips that suit them a lot more.

“I think there’s a few there that are going to be better in the autumn. They’re heading the right way, and they just keep improving after each run.

“There’s a few two-year-olds out and about already. He had very similar quality mares in his second book compared to his first, so we’re really looking forward to this second crop of two-year-olds coming through.”

White paid tribute to Moody - who bought Ole Dancer for $350,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast - and his co-trainer Coleman, as well as Mick Malone and his team at North, who presented the yearling Ole Dancer for sale.

“Peter and Katherine have done a fantastic job with the filly,” he said. “And Mick Malone and Pauline Alix at North, they reared her and Mick put the syndicate together to buy her with Peter.

“So it was a good effort to recognise a nice filly and they’ve been justly rewarded. She’s very valuable now, being a Group 1 winner.”

Meanwhile, Vinery are busy welcoming the first foals of their $16,500 stallion Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible), who covered 173 mares in his initial season.

“He’s getting really nice foals, which is exciting,” White said. “He’s our next sire coming through and if he can start the way Ole Kirk has, we’ll be really happy.”

And stud stalwart, the 16-year-old All Too Hard (Casino Prince) continues to cover his 13th book at $27,500, down from $38,500, fresh from raising his 31st stakes winner through Oh Too Good in the Ladies’ Day Vase (Gr 3, 1600m) on Caulfield Guineas day.

“All Too Hard is going really well,” White said. “He’s covering a really good book of mares. He’s been really popular this year, and at $25,000 he’s just terrific value. He’ll cover another nice book of 150 or 160 mares, which is great.”

Hunter chasing Derby dream with Autumn Mystery

By Paul Symes

Twelve years after $4,000 purchase Polanski (Rakti) completed the Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) and Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) double, Rory Hunter is hoping history can repeat itself as the emerging trainer strives to realise a “boyhood dream” with his bargain buy Autumn Mystery (The Autumn Sun).

Autumn Mystery (Credit: Racing Photos)

So-named because his owners were mystified at how they managed to pick him for a mere $15,000, Autumn Mystery is now third favourite for the Derby after stringing together back-to-back wins under Blake Shinn, who is booked to continue their association in the three-year-old staying Classic at Flemington in just under a fortnight’s time.

Despite being six months away from reaching full maturity, Hunter believes his stable star has now developed an aura thanks to a new-found winning habit which has fully vindicated the enduring faith placed in him by his trainer, who saddled up his first runner less than three years ago.

With just ten horses in work and a relatively modest budget to play with at the sales, the odds are firmly stacked against the likes of Hunter so the magnitude of the opportunity to dine at racing’s top table so early in his career is certainly not lost on the 37-year-old.

“I’m pinching myself that we train one of the favourites for a race as prestigious as the Derby, it’s just a dream come true really,” Hunter told ANZ Bloodstock News.

To have a live chance in one of the feature races during the Melbourne Cup Carnival is what every trainer dreams of when they start out

Rory Hunter

Trainer

“To have a live chance in one of the feature races during the Melbourne Cup Carnival is what every trainer dreams of when they start out. We’ll continue to monitor the horse over the next few days when he comes back under saddle. He’s been racing since July so it’s already been quite a long prep but at this stage it’s all systems go for the Derby.

“We won’t need to do much with him between now and then, he’s very fit so it will just be a case of maintaining his routine and keeping him ticking over. You could see how strong through the line he was on Saturday, so I would have no concerns over the extra 500 metres of the Derby. Once he saw daylight, he really exploded so I think the step up to 2500 metres should be really beneficial, as will the return to the big track at Flemington.”

Autumn Mystery’s victory extended a purple patch of spring form for his sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), who has resumed stud duties after a 12-month hiatus and is seemingly determined to make up for lost time.

Thanks chiefly to the recent exploits of his unbeaten mare Autumn Glow and her fellow Group 1 winner Autumn Boy, the Arrowfield resident has been propelled into the top five of the Australian Sires’ Premiership and he is now second only (by prize-money) to Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry) in the three-year-old category.

Rory Hunter (Credit: Racing Photos)

Having fetched $1.8 million at the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Autumn Glow’s price tag was precisely 120 times that of Autumn Mystery. Much to Hunter’s initial bemusement and subsequent delight, for some reason lot 547 from the Gilgai Farm draft failed to turn heads when he entered the ring at the 2024 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

“I had him pegged as a $200,000 to $300,000 yearling,” said Hunter, who also recently acquired Autumn Mystery’s half-brother by Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) for the princely sum of $5,000 at the weanling sales.

He was in the last ten lots to go through the ring on the last day of the sale, so I don’t know whether most of the buyers had gone home by then

Rory Hunter

Trainer

“He was in the last ten lots to go through the ring on the last day of the sale, so I don’t know whether most of the buyers had gone home by then or had already spent their allocated budget. Whatever the reason, it was our luck that we were in the right place at the right time.

“The Autumn Suns were just starting to take off and you know that any horse bred by Rick Jamieson is going to be a quality individual. He was a magnificent looking horse and there were no issues with his x-rays, so we were very surprised to get him for that price.”

When the gavel fell at $15,000 to the bid of Hunter’s stable clients Nicholas and Denise Thompson, the humble horseman couldn’t wait to get the colt broken in and welcome him to his boutique stables on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

That keen sense of anticipation was only heightened when reports came through from the breakers that the horse had done everything that was asked of him. A subsequently seamless transition into life at the stables persuaded Hunter to throw his charge in at the deep end as a three-start maiden in this year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Despite being sent off a $41 outsider, Autumn Mystery closed off sharply from last at the 400-metre mark to finish ninth (beaten 4.5 lengths) behind Devil Night (Extreme Choice).

After a well-deserved holiday, Autumn Mystery returned in midwinter with a creditable effort at Caulfield behind subsequent Group 1 heroine Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk). When he was rolled in a Bendigo maiden as the $1.30 favourite two starts later, punters may have given Autumn Mystery the dreaded tag of a ‘non-winner’ but Hunter remained undeterred, safe in the knowledge that the extra distance of the Victoria Derby Preview (1800m) would bring out his best.

And so it came to pass, as the bay gelding swooped on his rivals to belatedly break his maiden before announcing himself as a serious Derby contender with another bravura performance on Caulfield Cup Day.

“We never lost faith in the horse for one minute,” Hunter assured ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He’s now a mature, professional horse, and he’s always been a natural athlete. He’s taken to everything very quickly, but at the start of his career he had a habit of missing the start and getting a long way back in his races. He’s got a beautiful big action so it can take him quite a long time to wind up and hit top gear, but once he got his first win on the board at Flemington the horse has just blossomed and his confidence has really grown.

“When you watched him in the mounting yard on Saturday, you could see he’s got that aura about him now so I think he now realises that he’s a good horse. That should hopefully see him in good stead in a couple of weeks time, and having Blake on board is another big vote of confidence because he’s ridden enough horses in his time to know a good one. Once he’s had a spell I think you’ll see an even better horse in six months’ time, so the future’s very exciting for him but for now we’re just focusing all our efforts on getting him ready for the Derby.”

Should Hunter etch his name onto the iconic trophy, he would join an illustrious rollcall of trainers including his former mentors Mick Price and Peter Moody, who gave him his first chance in racing.

Hunter’s tenure with Moody coincided with the emergence of a sprinting filly known affectionately in the stables as ‘Nelly’, who would subsequently attain global recognition as one of the world’s greatest sprinters.

First-hand exposure to Black Caviar’s (Bel Esprit) equine excellence lit a fire in Hunter, and the lessons and knowledge he acquired from the man they call ‘Moods’ are gradually beginning to bear fruit as he is striking at a very healthy 23.1 per cent from the 13 runners he has sent out so far this season.

“My time with Peter was an unreal experience,” said Hunter.

“He’s just an absolute freak, and probably the best horseman I’ve ever come across. The way he conditions and places his horses is pretty close to perfection, so I was very lucky to learn from one of the best in the business and I’ve definitely tried to take his approach and apply it to my own training methods.

“Obviously it was amazing to get my first stakes winner at Caulfield on Saturday, then to see Peter and Katherine [Coleman] win the Thousand Guineas [with Ole Dancer] made it even more special.”

Treasurethe Moment set to tackle Cox Plate

Treasurethe Moment (Credit: Racint Photos)

Matt Laurie is ready to tackle Saturday’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) with his star mare Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) and has declared the four-time Group 1 winner as ready for the test. Having won nine starts in a row, the four-year-old daughter of Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) has finished runner-up in her last two outings - in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) - having returned from a an early spring colic attack. "She had a good strong gallop yesterday and her recovery was great," Laurie told Racing.com of the mare's gallop at Mornington. "She's fit and sound and so it's hard not to go. We've had two races [Feehan Stakes and Might And Power Stakes] leading into it that haven't been super ideal. Although we haven't won them, they were a bit inconclusive and all I know is my horse has come through really well and we're on the verge of a Cox Plate. I can't find an excuse not to run her." Laurie admitted he was still undecided on whether Treasurethe Moment will go to Tuesday's Breakfast With The Best gallops at The Valley. "It's a consideration but I don't think it is completely necessary," he said.

Options remain open for Observer

Ciaron Maher is undecided on whether to run Observer (Ghaiyyath) in Saturday's Cox Plate or Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m), with the colt having been an unlucky third in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on October 11. Saturday's Vase is the most likely lead-up to the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on Saturday week, but Maher could yet test the three-year-old in the Cox Plate. "No decision has been made at this point," Maher's assistant Jack Turnbull said. "We are more than likely Vase, but whether that changes that is up to Andy [Makiv], Jason [Walsh] and Ciaron, but either way the horse gets prepped the same way. He could potentially go to The Valley on Tuesday morning, otherwise he will have a gallop at Cranbourne on Monday. A trip away to The Valley, given it is there, he's a colt and still does a few things wrong, it's a genuine possibility."

McEvoys yet to make Cup call for Half Yours

Tony and Calvin McEvoy are yet to make a decision on whether last Saturday's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Half Yours (St Jean) will go on to contest the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on the first Tuesday in November. The five-year-old gelding had a recovery session at Altona Beach on Sunday morning, following his triumph in the $5 million contest. “It’s too early to come to a firm decision, but it’s going to be hard to pass up that opportunity if he really pleases us over the next few days, but we don’t need to make a decision just now,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “We’ll watch him closely; he looked very bright and well this morning at the beach. Should he bounce quickly over the next 24, 48 hours, I’d say we’ll be giving him his chance to be there. It definitely makes it easier [with Sir Delius out], I don’t think it changes whether we go there or not. What will make our decision is the horse and how he is. He’s a star, so should he give us any reason that he’s had enough this time in, then we’ll have no hesitation to tip him out.”

Sir Delius options still up in the air

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will gather some more information on the condition of Sir Delius (Frankel) before deciding on whether to press on with his preparation. The five-year-old entire was ruled out of the rest of the Melbourne Spring Carnival by Racing Victoria stewards after he underwent scans in preparation for the Melbourne Cup. "We're still in that stage of assessing that information and what it means to his campaign this preparation and future ones and what are the options surrounding that," Bott said. "We will gather a bit more information as well and what we do with those decisions and options. We do have some great options. Outwardly he seems in great shape. We will process all of that as information comes to hand and we'll be able to make a decision then." The Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill on November 8 could be under consideration. "It's not a given, but if he were to continue racing, then that would be a logical option to come back here for a Five Diamonds race," Bott said. "No decisions have been made yet. That information [vets report] came as a bit of a shock to us. The report has been presented and once we go through that, then we can make that call."

Autumn Glow to have Randwick trial

Undefeated mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) is set to take in a barrier trial at Randwick as she continues her preparation towards the Golden Eagle (1500m) next month. Trainer Chris Waller is taking a similar route with the four-year-old mare as he did with his 2019 Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)-Golden Eagle winner Kolding (Ocean Park). "Kolding won both and didn't race in between so it's a very similar path to that," Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. "I think we will put in a nomination for the Empire Rose [Stakes] as well as the Golden Eagle but the preference is the Golden Eagle. She has ticked off the Group 1 item now so we're expecting a pleasing trial on Monday. She galloped on Thursday on the course proper and she hasn't missed a beat. She has come through the Epsom in great order so it's full steam ahead for the trial."

Just Charlie too slick for Waverley Cup rivals

Just Charlie (Credit: Race Images)

Just Charlie (Zed) sounded a stern warning to his rivals for the upcoming New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) with an all the way romp in Sunday’s Waverley Cup (2200m). Prepared by Kevin Myers, Just Charlie had a luckless preparation leading into the Waverley feature, covering extra ground and being held up badly on two occasions, particularly on his previous start when favourite in a similar contest at Trentham in mid-September. This time George Rooke was able to dictate terms along the back straight before powering through the line to beat Comedy (Mongolian Khan) by two lengths. The six-year-old gelding maintained his unbeaten record at the venue going three-from-three, and Rooke said he felt the winner a long way from home. “I didn’t really have any instructions but he jumped quite well, we weren’t going very hard early and he relaxed well in front,” he said. “He kept at a nice even gallop and he’s a proper stayer, he just lengthened and hit the line very nicely today. That horse [Jack In The Box] joined me between the 800 and 600 [metres] and he came alive underneath me, so I knew I had a lot of horse and it would take a good one to beat him. I didn’t realise they were all off the bit as much as they were coming into the straight, he had them covered a long way out. That was my first ride for Kevin so it was great to get it off to a winning one.”

Talented Tisse headed for Cups

Taranaki visitor Tisse (Belardo) announced himself as a serious cups contender for the summer months with an impressive victory over 2100 metres at Ellerslie on Saturday. After racing well on heavy tracks this campaign, the son of Belardo (Lope De Vega) finally struck a good surface in the staying contest and started favourite in the hands of Opie Bosson, justifying the support as he defeated I Park (Ocean Park) by a half-length. The five-year-old always showed ability but has been a work in progress for his trainer Allan Sharrock, making Saturday’s result all the more satisfying. “It’s taken a while, he’s a big rangy horse and mentally impaired, a typical Belardo, but he’s getting better at every start,” Sharrock said. “He didn’t hang today, he’d hung going the other way around at Te Rapa but he’s learning. I was [concerned about the speed] through the middle, but he snuck closer at the 600 [metres] and Opie rode him really, really well – that’s what you get from Opie. He was soft on him late, I think he’s the sort of horse you could see in a Waikato Cup over a mile and a half, he likes good ground which belies the Belardo side but he’s a lovely horse.”

Smashing southern start for Awapuni visitor

Platinum Pantheon (Hanseatic) was a long way from home when he stepped out at Ashburton on Sunday, but that didn’t stop the sharp three-year-old from dominating his maiden rivals. His trainer Lisa Latta had been in search of a better surface for Platinum Pantheon, who had performed with merit on heavy ground often found at the present time in the North Island. Meanwhile in the south, he had the opportunity to step out on a Good 3 over 1200 metres and looked the horse to beat against his older counterparts, starting a $2.70 favourite ahead of Aladdins Jem (Satono Aladdin). In the hands of Kylie Williams, the gelding put the field away in a matter of strides, streaking clear by a margin to ease down and score by 5.3 lengths. It hadn’t been a comfortable watch for Latta, who was on course at Waverley, but she couldn’t have been happier with the final result. “It didn’t go as we’d planned, we hoped to jump and sit outside the leader, but he was slow away and got caught wide but he was just too good for them,” she said. “He trialled up so well at Awapuni a fortnight ago, which gave us the confidence to go down there while looking for those better tracks.”

JPN: Embroidery regains winning thread

Embroidery (3 f Admire Mars - Rottenmeier by Kurofune) made a winning return to action when she took out the Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) at Kyoto on Sunday. Having her first start since finishing down the field in the Yushun Himba (Gr 1, 2400m) at Tokyo back in May, the Kazutomo Mori-trained filly notched her second elite-level win as she beat Erika Express (Epiphaneia) by a half-length. Paradis Reine (Kizuna) finished a further three-quarters of a length away in third. In landing Sunday’s race, Embroidery took her career record to five wins and a second from eight starts.

17 for Belardo

Shaool (Credit: Racing Post)

Shaool (4 f ex Imtidaad by Lemon Drop Kid) became the 17th individual stakes winner for former Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) when scoring impressively in the Trigo Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Leopardstown on Sunday. Ridden by Ben Coen for Johnny Murtagh, the four-year-old filly was sent off the well-supported 6-4 favourite and justified that market confidence in style as she stormed six lengths clear of Acapulco Bay (Dubawi). The consistent nine-year-old Certain Lad (Clodovil) finished a further length and three-quarters back in third. Bred by Belmont Bloodstock and raced by the Broadfield Group Syndicate, Shaool is a half-sister to winner Dr T J Eckleburg (Lawman) being out of the Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) mare Imtidaad, herself a half-sister to Listed scorer Tazahum (Redoute’s Choice). Belardo was sold by Bearstone Stud in August to continue his stud career at Yigit Stud in a deal in conjunction with the Jockey Club of Turkey.

IRE: Back-to-back Knockaire Stakes wins for Norwalk Havoc

Norwalk Havoc (4 g Showcasing - Light Of Joy by Kitten’s Joy) made it back-to-back wins in Sunday’s Knockaire Stakes (Listed, 1m) when making all in the mile Listed contest. Ridden by Seamie Heffernan for Jessica Harrington, the four-year-old gelding repeated his tactics from last year as he never saw another rival, kicking clear inside the final two furlongs to beat Queen Of Thunder (Night Of Thunder) by three lengths. There was a further four and a half lengths back to Soft Winds (Night Of Thunder) in third.

80 for Night Of Thunder

Rainbow’s Edge (4 f ex Memory by Danehill Dancer) provided Darley’s former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) with his 80th individual stakes winner when scoring in the Prix Casimir Delamarre (Listed, 1800m) at Longchamp on Sunday. Ridden by Oisin Murphy for John and Thady Gosden, the four-year-old filly made most of the running in the 1800-metre contest and came home well for a length and a quarter success over Velikaya (Frankel). Euboa (Soldier Hollow) finished the same distance further back in third place. Bred by the late Queen Elizabeth II and now raced by King Charles III, Rainbow’s Edge is closely related to winner Reminder (Dubawi) and a half-sister to four other winners including Grade 2 scorer Call To Mind (Galileo) and Group 3 winners Recorder (Galileo) and Learn By Heart (Frankel) being out of the Group 2-winning mare Memory (Danehill Dancer). Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Darley Australia for one season in 2016, stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$269,070).

FR: Convergent continues progressive ways to land Group 2

The Karl Burke-trained Convergent (3 c Fascinating Rock - Monty’s Miracle by Shamardal) continued his upward curve on Sunday when narrowly scoring in the Prix du Conseil de Paris (Gr 2, 2200m) at Longchamp. Having run a close second in the German Derby (Gr 1, 2400) and landed the CMG Group Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 4f) on his two prior starts, the three-year-old colt took Group 2 honours this weekend as he fended off a determined challenge from three-time Australian Group 1 winner Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) to score by a short-neck. There was a further neck back to the front-running Yellow Jersey (Dubawi) in third.

28 for Reliable Man

Alsterperle (2 f ex Aktion by Kallisto) became the 28th individual stakes winner for Reliable Man (Dalakhani) when landing the Preis der Winterkonigin (Gr 3, 1600m) at Baden-Baden on Sunday. Trained by Maxim Pecheur and ridden by Martin Seidl, the juvenile filly ran on well inside the final furlong to beat British raider Sea The Storm (Sea The Stars) by a length and three-quarters. There was a further half-length back to Valzeina (Persian King) in third. Bred and raced by Gestut Rottgen, Alsterperle is the only foal to race from three out of the winning Kallisto (Sternkoenig) mare Aktion, herself a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Akribie (Reliable Man).

46 for Mehmas

Gaga Mate (2 c ex Truth Prevails by Siyouni) provided Tally-Ho Stud resident Mehmas (Acclamation) with his 46th individual stakes winner when triumphant in Sunday’s Gran Criterium (Gr 3, 1500m) at Milan. Trained in the UK by George Scott, Gaga Mate beat Zuender (Amaron) by a length and a quarter with Sunset On Leros (Almanzor) another head away in third. Bought for €20,000 at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, Gaga Mate is the first foal out of the winning Siyouni (Pivotal) mare Truth Prevails, who herself is out of a maiden half-sister to Group 1 winners Postponed (Dubawi) and God Given (Nathaniel). Mehmas stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €70,000 (approx. AU$125,565).

18 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) secured his 18th individual winner when the Aidan O’Brien-trained River Ara (2 f ex Twitch by Azamour) landed a mile handicap at Leopardstown on Saturday. Providing his trainer with a sixth winner on the seven-race card and his rider Jack Cleary with a fourth success, the juvenile filly defeated Iamimmaculate (Coulsty) by a half-length. There was a further two and three-quarter lengths back to the third-placed Cherry Hill Girl (Belardo). Bred by Clarecastle Stud, River Ava was purchased by MV Magnier for 300,000gns during Book 1 of the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is raced by Westerberg, John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. Closely related to winner Tadita Twitch (Siyouni) and a half-sister to winners Crack Shot (Kingman) and Emphasis (Magna Grecia), she is the fourth foal out of the Listed-winning mare Twitch (Azamour), herself out of a sister to top-class Hong Kong performer Viva Pataca (Marju). St Mark’s Basilica is standing at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

25 for Omaha Beach

Kappa Kappa (3 f ex Pharoah's Princess by Pioneerof The Nile) showed a good battling spirit to land the Raven Run Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Keeneland on Saturday and in the process provided Spendthrift Farm resident Omaha Beach (War Front) with his 25th individual stakes winner. Lining up off the back of two wins from three starts at Parx, the Butch Reid-trained filly edged out Vodka With A Twist (Thousand Words) by a head with favourite Ragtime (Union Rags) a further half-length away in third. Bred by Stone Jug Ranch in Pennsylvania, Kappa Kappa is the first winner from four foals to race from the winning Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker) mare Pharoah's Princess. LC Racing bought Kappa Kappa out of the Vinery Sales consignment at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale for US$65,000. Omaha Beach is due to stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$75,000 (approx. AU$115,830), up from US$35,000 (approx. AU$54,050) in 2025.

94 for Quality Road

Quality Road (Credit: Lane's End)

Borealis Trail (3 g ex Aurora Lights by Pulpit) provided Lane’s End resident Quality Road (Elusive Quality) with his 94th individual stakes winner when getting up late to nab Saturday’s Ontario Derby (Gr 3, 9f) at Woodbine. Stepping up in grade after a second in Listed company on his stakes debut on his previous start, the Rachel Halden-trained gelding beat favourite Mansetti (Collected) by two lengths with Wagstaff (Yorkton) a further two and a half lengths away in third. A homebred for Chiefswood Stables, Borealis Trail is out of the dual Grade 3 winner Aurora Lights (Pulpit) making him a half-brother to five winners, including Simcoe (Uncle Mo), who himself won twice in Grade 3 company. Quality Road will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$100,000 (approx. AU$154,440).

US: Ready For Candy edges Sands Point Stakes

Ready For Candy (3 f Twirling Candy - Enoree by More Than Ready) made it three wins on the bounce, and tasted victory in stakes company for the second time, when she struck in the Sands Point Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at the Belmont At The Big A meeting on Saturday. Sent out the warm market leader, the Phil Antonacci-trained filly justified her place at the head of the betting as she beat Fast Market (Volatile) by a neck. Pretty Picture (Munnings) finished two lengths behind the winner in third.

My Wish storms to Sha Tin Trophy glory

My Wish (Credit: HKJC)

My Wish (Flying Artie) underlined his mounting Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) credentials with a scintillating performance to scoop the Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m) on Sunday.

The five-year-old remained on course for his long-term target at the Hong Kong International Races on December 14 as he continued his rise through the grades under Mark Newnham, after scooping his second Group prize of the season.

Given a fine ride by Alexis Badel, tracking the brisk pace set by Keagan De Melo on Copartner Prance (Epaulette) before moving from his haunches and bursting clear to salute by one-and-a-quarter lengths, My Wish claimed the sixth win of his sparkling career so far. Copartner Prance held on for an excellent second whilst Derek Leung and Beauty Joy (Sebring) completed the frame in third.

“I had an awkward gate [11] but we decided to make it simple not complicated and he just relaxed,” Badel said. “He was waiting for me to ask him [for an effort] and when I did, he just responded well.”

Newnham was gushing about his stable star and his improvement this season.

“His race manners have improved as he’s matured,” the winning trainer said. “He’s got that good gate speed. He [Badel] had to use him a little bit – the inside runners weren’t going to make it easy for him. But when he got there, he waited and conserved energy.”

But the trainer, who oversaw 43 black type wins in his native Australia, sounded a note of caution that he won’t enjoy the benefit of minimum weight – as he did on Sunday – when the December extravaganza rolls around.

“By that stage, we’re meeting more on level weights,” Newnham said. “So, he’s got to continue to improve, but he’s doing the job well and I think there’s enough improvement to see him at that level.”

The next test for the gelding is to navigate next month’s BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m).

The dream weekend continued for Zac Purton, fresh from his landmark victory in the The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday, as he bagged a double to move to 1,899 Hong Kong wins.

The first leg of his brace came in the Class 4 Sun Tin Wai Handicap (1000m) aboard the promising Robot Lucky Star (Hellbent). The Manfred Man-trained four-year-old claimed his maiden win, quickening nicely with 100 metres to go along the Sha Tin straight course to pull clear and prevail comfortably over California Blitz (Capitalist).

Purton improved to 21 wins for the season when he combined with Man for another success, this time aboard Patch Of Stars (All Too Hard) in the Class 3 Lek Yuen Handicap (1200m).

Brett Crawford claimed the third winner of his debut season with his sole runner of the day when Double Show (Showcasing) got up to claim the card-opening Class 5 Shek Mun Handicap (1400m) under Karis Teetan.

Produced by Teetan 200 metres out after trailing the front-running Lucky Blessing (Microphone), Double Show prevailed by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

“I’m happy that he’s won the race and I thought he won quite well,” Crawford said. “He’s dropped a lot in the ratings – obviously he’ll get some of them back today, but I do think he’s a horse that’s got the ability to follow up.”

The victory nudged the trainer’s strike-rate up to a remarkable 16 per cent from just 19 starts.

After seven runner-up finishes before Sunday, Matthew Poon netted an overdue win after a sterling effort from Gracious Express (Churchill) in the Class 3 Wo Che Handicap (1400m). The Ricky Yiu inmate was forced to dig deep to fend off a spirited charge from Purton’s mount, Everyone’s Star (Puissance De Lune).

Lyle Hewitson continued his impressive form this term, striking on Special Hedge (Unusual Suspect) in the Class 4 Chun Shek Handicap (1800m) to notch his seventh win so far. The Michael Chang-trained gelding got up by a short head after a desperate battle to the line with Chris So’s Firefoot (Shooting To Win).

James Orman struck on The Auspicious (Almanzor) in the first section of the Class 4 Sun Chui Handicap (1400m) for Me Tsui in a battling performance from the four-year-old.

Jerry Chau took out the second section of the Class 4 Sun Chui Handicap (1400m) on Lucky Sam Gor (Press Statement) for Mark Newnham, who extended his lead to two at the top of the trainer’s championship with his double.

Ellis Wong received a belated birthday gift after turning 25 on Saturday when the apprentice rode Pejibaye (Per Incanto) to his first Hong Kong win for his boss Caspar Fownes in the Class 4 Lung Hang Handicap (1200m).

As the dust began to settle on Ka Ying Rising’s (Shamexpress) seismic triumph in the The Everest at Royal Randwick on Saturday, it was fitting that David Hayes scooped the day’s closer, the Class 3 Sha Kok Handicap (1600m) with exciting talent Fortune Boy (Contributer), ridden by Karis Teetan, who wrapped up a double in a thrilling blanket finish.

Earlier in the day, a ceremony was held to congratulate the victorious duo of Hayes and Purton on their Sydney heroics. Of the horse of the hour, Hayes said: “We’re very lucky with this horse, he’s incredibly sound. He’s got a great appetite and the constitution of an elephant. He’d recovered within 20 minutes of the race, and if we needed to – which we’re not – you could run him in two weeks. He’s a fantastic horse.

“He’ll be coming home on Monday night and will be in Hong Kong on Tuesday for a couple of easy weeks in quarantine.”
