Te Akau Racing enjoyed a special victory at Te Aroha on Wednesday when blue-blooded filly Avantaggia (Wootton Bassett) broke through in the Donaghys Moxipor (1150m), delivering a fitting full-circle result for New Zealand’s powerhouse stable.

By Coolmore’s star-crossed stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), Avantaggia is the first foal out of Te Akau’s former champion mare Avantage (Fastnet Rock), a nine-time Group 1 winner who was sold to Tom Magnier for a record-breaking NZ$4.1 million on Gavelhouse Plus in 2021.

Te Akau’s principal David Ellis later went to $2.1 million to secure Avantaggia, her first foal, from the Coolmore draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the filly made an immediate impression on trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson.

What's On

After winning three trials, Avantaggia made a promising debut when finishing a determined fourth in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres at Ellerslie on 20 September, a race won by subsequent Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Well Written (Written Tycoon).

Drawn ideally in barrier one this time, Avantaggia was rated a leading chance, and under a composed ride from Te Akau’s stable jockey Opie Bosson, she enjoyed an economical run behind the speed. Angling through to lead at the 300 metres, she sustained a strong gallop to the line to score impressively.

“In her first start she had to work quite hard from the gate and probably used up a little too much petrol,” Bosson said.

“She bounced out of that race well and her work has been quite nice and barrier one was a big assist [today]. They were going quite quick and had her off the nickel most of the way, but she is a real professional and went through the gap as good as gold and the only thing she did wrong was look at the winning post.”

Te Akau principal David Ellis was pleased to see the filly win in what was a full-circle moment for the syndicator.

“I was very impressed with her,” Ellis told ANZ News. “I think she's got a lot of improvement still to come. But she's been really well educated by the team and it was great to see her win so nicely at her second start.”

Ellis wrote the opening chapter in Avantage’s remarkable story when he purchased the daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) for $210,000 from The Oaks Stud draft at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale.

Bred in Southland by Willie and Karen Calder, Avantage is out of Asavant (Zabeel), a winner of the Warstep Stakes (Listed, 2000m), who also placed at Group 1 level.

The Champion Two-Year-Old of 2017/18 and winner of the Karaka Million 2YO (RL, 1200m), Avantage went on to win nine Group 1 races, more than any other Fastnet Rock, and amassed $2.1 million in prize-money for the Te Akau Avantage Syndicate.

“Her mother won a group one at 1200, 1400, 1600, and 2,000 metres, and not many mares do that,” Ellis told ANZ News. “Avantaggia probably isn't quite as early a maturing filly as Avantage was.

“Avantage won her first start in September as a two-year-old, and she won her second start in October as a two-year-old. Then we turned her out for a spell, and she came back and won the Karaka million, and won the Sires’ Produce Group 1.”

Following her maiden success, Avantaggia will be aimed towards late-spring black-type targets.

“Definitely a stakes race next start. We'll just see how she comes through the race and we'll probably give her a week in the paddock and then get her ready for a nice black-type race in November,” Ellis said.

Te Akau will look to continue the momentum into Saturday, with several leading contenders across the country.

At Riccarton, the tangerine team will be represented in the War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) by well-bred colt War Of Silence, a $700,000 yearling by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) out of Group 1-winning mare Silent Sedition (War Chant). He will be joined in the race by filly Origin Of Love, also by Arrowfield’s four-time champion sire, out of Group 2-placed mare Re Edit (Camelot), who head the market at $2.15 and $3.90 respectively.

Ellis is hoping the duo will advertise their Classic potential when they tackle the Group 3 this weekend.

He said: “We've sent them down with the thought that if they come through this race really well, they could run in the 2,000 and the 1,000 Guineas. Mark and Sam are very happy with both of them.

"We've got a really nice team at Riccaton, we like going down there in the spring because the tracks are so good. Riccarton has one of the best tracks in the world. It's got a 450-metre straight and they don't get the rainfall that we get in the North island up here.

Origin Of Love (Credit: Race Images)

“So the tracks are always that much better, and the New Zealand Cup meeting that's coming up in two weeks is one of the best meetings that we have in New Zealand. We like sending the horses down there early because they just love the track and we don't have to run them on the soft tracks that we get in the north.

Further north at Ellerslie, Sword Of Stars will make her debut, and Ellis believes the daughter of Cambridge Stud freshman Sword Of State (Snitzel), who was also raced by Te Akau, will be a winning chance.

Purchased by Ellis for $350,000 at the 2025 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, the filly is a half-sister to Listed scorer Angelic Miss (Savabeel).

“She will be very hard to beat. She is a very, very good horse that I bought from Windsor Park. I have bought a lot of very good horses from them over the years. I bought Sword of State himself off Sir Owen Glenn as a yearling and he beat Imperatriz. Sword Of Stars is one of the best two-year-olds we've got, that's for sure.”

Across the weekend and into the summer, Te Akau’s strong juvenile team will continue to build momentum.

“We've got 16 two-year-olds trialling at Ellersie tomorrow [Thursday]. And we've got another two juveniles that are racing at Trentham on Saturday. We've got a Super Seth filly and a Vanbrugh gelding. They’ve both shown plenty. And we've got a very impressive filly that we're getting ready for the Karaka million by Tavaci in at Riccarton on Saturday.”

Ellis said attention will soon turn to the NZB Ready to Run Sale, where a quality catalogue has been assembled.

“We've bought at the Ready To Run sale every year for probably the last 15 years. So we'll be having a look for sure,” he said.

“It's easily the best ready to run sale in the southern hemisphere and the quality of horses that I've seen for this year are as good as I've ever seen. So I'm expecting a very strong sale and a lot of very good horses will come out of it.”

Darby strikes for Amazing Eagle on October (Late) Online Sale

Lot 79: Amazing Eagle (Credit: Inglis)

Scott Darby believes Wednesday’s Inglis Digital sale-topper Amazing Eagle (Capitalist) can continue along the same successful mould as the likes of former online Darby acquisitions Robusto (Churchill), Caballus (I Am Invincible) and Imperial Force (Snitzel) and progress on to become a future racetrack star.

Darby has had endless positive results when purchasing tried racehorses off Inglis Digital.

Among a plethora of their successful online purchases are Robusto – a $160,000 Inglis Digital buy which has since won the $2 million The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m) as well as another Stakes race - Caballus ($315,000 Inglis Digital buy) which is a stakes winner since purchase and Imperial Force ($285,000), now a dual winner and Group 2-placed.

Wednesday’s purchase of Amazing Eagle – which will be trained by Bjorn Baker – in the October (Late) Sale for a sale high $310,000 has Darby hopeful of a repeat outcome.

“It’s been absolute gold,’’ Darby said of his Inglis Digital success stories.

“I’m actually sitting here doing the video promotion now and we call it ‘Inglis Digital gold!’

“Even Bjorn has grabbed 10 per cent of Amazing Eagle, that shows how much he likes him. We’ll look to race him next week or the week after in Sydney and hopefully get an immediate return for owners.

“We think he’ll improve off his first-up run and while he’s an entire, we’ll try and take him through his grades and then line up in a Group 1 in the autumn all going well.’’

Among Darby’s other purchases today was the undefeated four-year-old Gatekeeper (Justify), which they secured for $105,000.

Gatekeeper was part of an unreserved racehorse reduction from Coolmore - all which sold to separate buying groups – which also included Sarapo (Frankel) ($255,000), Congressman (Snitzel) ($95,000) and Constellation (Justify) ($65,000).

“We’re delighted with the results today, as per usual when we offer our stock on Inglis Digital,’’ Coolmore’s John Kennedy said.

“Coolmore has utilised Inglis Digital for many years now and believe it’s a great platform that continues to deliver great results.

“It’s really good that the four horses have ended up with four different owners, yet another sign of the broad range of buyers Inglis Digital has generated over the years, and we wish all them all the best with the horses moving forward.’’

Other lots to sell well in Wednesday’s October (Late) Sale include Emirate (Extreme Choice) ($265,000 to ARPL Racing) and Pacific Cross (Merchant Navy) ($120,000 to Walnut Farm), which took to 37 the number of lots to sell for $200,000 or more on Inglis Digital this year and 116 the number of $100,000+ lots in 2025 so far.

In total today’s sale grossed $3,747,450.

Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital November (Early) Online Sale and will remain so until midnight next Wednesday, October 29.

The Sale will run from Friday, October 31 and finish on Wednesday, November 5.

Sir Delius spelled for the autumn

Sir Delius (Frankel) will not take his place in Saturday’s $750,000 Craven Plate (Gr 3, 1800m) at Randwick, with co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott opting to spell the high-class import following his controversial withdrawal from the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and the remainder of the Victorian Spring Carnival last week. Racing Victoria stewards deemed the son of Frankel (Galileo) ineligible to race due to irregular results in the mandatory CT scanning process. Despite nominating for the Craven Plate to keep options open, Waterhouse confirmed on social media on Wednesday that the decision had been made to put Sir Delius out until the autumn. "After discussing Sir Delius with the ownership group, Adrian and I have made the decision to spell him and set our sights on the autumn carnival," Waterhouse said on X. "He's an extremely valuable horse and one we firmly believe will continue to prove he's the best weight-for-age performer in Australia. Bring on the $5 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.” Sir Delius had been favourite for both the $6 million Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and the $10 million Melbourne Cup following consecutive Group 1 victories in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). RV’s imaging panel, comprising specialists from Australia, the UK and USA, determined the stallion was at a heightened risk of injury, even after additional PET scans were conducted. With Sir Delius sidelined, stablemate Lindermann (Lohnro) has firmed as the dominant favourite for Saturday’s eight-horse Craven Plate field.

Light Infantry Man ready to peak in Cox Plate

Ciaron Maher admits Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) will need to lift his form if he’s to feature in Saturday’s Cox Plate at The Valley. The gelding’s last run in Victoria resulted in victory in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington in March, a performance Maher is hoping to see repeated in the final Cox Plate run on the current Valley circuit before redevelopment. After campaigning in Sydney this spring, including a ninth-place finish in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill, Maher said Light Infantry Man was now fit and ready to peak. “Things didn’t pan out for him that day which also came on top of a heavy workload to get him to peak fitness,” Maher said. Described by Maher as “feminine” and “naturally very athletic”, the gelding worked quietly at Cranbourne on Tuesday rather than galloping at Moonee Valley’s Breakfast With The Best. With limited pace forecast, Maher said the race shape could suit. “He thrives on high pressure races,” he said. “He has led before, so maybe he could be that horse. If there is a lack [of pace], then he could be forward, for sure. You would say he has to improve, but if the race is run to suit, he will.” Regular rider Ethan Brown reunites with Light Infantry Man for his first Cox Plate ride. “Brownie has gone to another level this year,” Maher said. “He rides Light Infantry Man very well and we probably missed him last start.”

Kent confident Globe will pass vet check

Michael Kent Jnr remains upbeat that Globe (Charm Spirit) will be cleared to take his place in Saturday’s Cox Plate at The Valley, despite a minor setback earlier in the week. The last-start Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner must undergo and pass a Racing Victoria (RV) veterinary inspection on Thursday morning, after an “irritation” was detected in a fetlock joint during a routine check on Monday. Kent Jnr said the stable was confident but prepared to accept whatever decision the RV vets make. “As of this [Wednesday] morning, Max rode him and said he felt fantastic – he’s his regular rider – and thought he was very sound, full of energy,” Kent Jnr told Racing.com. “He’s hopped on the truck and gone down to Seaford beach for a paddle again. We are really happy and we’d expect he’d get through the 9.30am vet check, on Thursday, no problem.” Globe’s connections paid a $200,000 late entry fee to gain a start in the Cox Plate following his impressive defeat of Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) in the Might And Power at Caulfield. Drawn in barrier seven, Globe is expected to roll forward and set the tempo in the $6 million weight-for-age feature. “I think Moonee Valley is a good track for him,” Kent Jnr said. “The rain is very welcome. I didn’t think he could win a big race on a Good 3, but he did, and he ran a career-best last start. He is a really, really good wet-tracker.”

Bowman reunites with Waller for Aeliana’s Cox Plate tilt

Ten years after their first Cox Plate triumph together, the partnership of Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman will reunite at The Valley on Saturday when the now Hong Kong-based jockey rides Aeliana (Castelvecchio) in the $6 million Group 1. The champion jockey, who famously rode Winx (Street Cry) to four straight victories in the feature, will fly in from Hong Kong to partner the ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)-winning mare for the first time. “Obviously, I have a wonderful history in the race with Chris Waller,” Bowman told Racing.com. “Aeliana herself has been ultra impressive, certainly at the back end of her three-year-old career and I think there’s been a lot of merit in all her runs this time in. Obviously, Damian Lane being committed to Treasurethe Moment has had Chris Waller in the position where he’s needed a jockey. I'm really grateful and proud that he gave me the opportunity to come back and ride her. There’s a great feeling about it and let’s hope that Aeliana puts her best foot forward. If she does, I certainly think she can be competitive.” Aeliana is one of three runners Waller will saddle in the weight-for-age championship, alongside defending champion Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Buckaroo. “Although I’ve had nothing to do physically with Aeliana, it’s quite obvious to me looking back on her races that she appears to be going every bit as good as Via Sistina,” Bowman said. “Chris wouldn’t be taking her unless she was a genuine winning chance.”

San Giovanni set for maiden Group 1 task

Michael Freedman believes progressive colt San Giovanni (Zoustar) will relish the step up in trip when he tackles his first Group 1 assignment in Saturday’s Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick. The late-blooming son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) will be having his fourth run of the preparation, and likely his last before an autumn campaign, after a rapid rise through the grades since debuting in July. He burst onto the scene with back-to-back wins at Newcastle and Kembla Grange before a short break, and returned to finish well back in the Ming Dynasty Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) before placing in both runs since, each over 1800 metres at Rosehill. His most recent effort saw him finish third in the Gloaming Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) behind Shangri La Boy (Pierro) and The Pearls (Proisir), who he meets again on Saturday. "He ran great in the Gloaming last time," Freedman said. "He was really strong through the line. To me he shaped as though he's going to really relish the 2000 metres." Freedman ruled out backing up in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) the following week, noting the distance as unsuitable for most spring three-year-olds. "I'm not a huge fan of the 2500 metres of the Derby for the three-year-olds at this time of the year," he said. "If he can run well on Saturday, then I think we'd probably pull the pin, put him away, and look to the autumn with him. He's come a long way in a relatively short space of time, so I think he might have a future as a stayer." San Giovanni has drawn barrier five in the 14-horse field and will again be ridden by Andrew Adkins, who has partnered him in all three starts this campaign.

Attica ready for Group 1 bid

Adam Hyeronimus is looking forward to getting on board last-start Dulcify Stakes (Listed, 1600m) winner Attica (Lonhro) in Saturday's Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. The jockey was booked to ride the Godolphin-owned in the Group 1 before he guided his major opponent Shangri La Boy (Pierro) to victory in the Gloaming Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) two weeks ago. So as far as he’s concerned there was no decision to be made between them and he can focus on how to give his mount the best run he can from barrier 13 at the tricky 2000-metre start. “You’ve got to make the best of a bad situation,” Hyeronimus told Racing NSW. “A lot of things can change before the first 100 metres of the race so I don’t think it’s anything to stress about. He’s such a relaxed character and takes everything in his stride. The distance will be right up his alley, obviously the barrier isn’t ideal but that’s the way it is.”

Lindermann bidding for back-to-back stakes wins

The Chris Waller-trained Lindermann (Lonhro) will chase back-to-back stakes wins when he takes his place in Saturday’s Craven Plate (Gr 3, 1800m) at Randwick. The Woppitt Bloodstock-owned six-year-old won the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) second-up, before finding only Fangirl (Sebring) too good in the 7 Stakes (1600m) and goes into the Group 3 off the back of a victory in Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill on October 11. “It’s been a good confidence building preparation for him, he’s been able to win that couple and just got touched off by Fangirl,’’ said Nash Rawiller, who will be on board the six-year-old. “I just think Chris has placed him beautifully. Fangirl on her day, there’s probably none better over a mile. When you’re running her to a short half head it shows how well he’s going.I think he’s the ultimate racehorse, he’s had to be pitted against the best of them quite often and if you’ve got a slight chink in your armour you get found out. I think he’s gone to a new level now he’s really matured.”

Transatlantic takes aim at the Five Diamonds

Last-start Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Transatlantic (Snitzel) will chase further riches when he takes a shot at the Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) at Randwick on Saturday. Gollan said the plan had always been to plunder the Sydney riches and will take in the 1500-metre event before the crack at the $2 million Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill on November 8. “He’s a gelding and you’re chasing the prize-money aren’t you,’’ he said. “It’s fantastic prize-money on offer, it fits beautifully into his preparation and distance range. It’s always been the plan to come back for this race then hopefully on to the Five Diamonds in a fortnight. He’s handling the racing beautifully, he worked nicely at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning and he’ll parade in really good shape. He can lead and win as we saw in the Toorak but when there’s something just in front of him to chase he’s that little bit better. You saw on Toorak day he has a tenacious finish on him.”

Champions Mile plan for Ceolwulf

Joe Pride will likely keep stable star Ceolwulf (Tavistock) to a mile as he looks to round off his spring campaign with a first trip away. The five-year-old ran out a ready winner of the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m), defending his crown, despite having gone winless in the previous 12 months. “It has been good to us that day. Over the last three years we have won two King Charles and an Everest [Think About It], but our luck will run out eventually on that day. It’s been a good run,” Pride said. “It’s 12 months ago now that he won that race and, in the period in between, for two preparations, he's put in some runs that have had me scratching my head and thinking was there a chance that that was just him at his absolute best. To see him do it again last Saturday gives me great confidence that going forward, we're still working with the same horse, and a horse that is going to win most races that he competes in when he performs to that level.” Pride will now set his sights on the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on the final day of the Flemington carnival. “It is unusual for one of mine to have had this many starts (24) and not had a trip away, but I'd love to bring him down to Flemington,” Pride said. “I'd say we'll stick to the mile. He's won three Group 1s at a mile now, and although I do need to see him at 2000m again at some stage, I don’t think it needs to be straight away. I'd say we'll be down to Melbourne for the Champions Mile.”

Pride Of Jenni still on track for Flemington targets

Ciaron Maher’s star mare Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) will press on to the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with her connections eyeing a return to Flemington despite a below-par effort in last Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. The bold front-runner was unable to dictate as usual in Sydney, lacking her trademark early speed and having to work mid-race to find the lead before finishing seventh, three lengths adrift of the winner, Ceolwulf. A brilliant winner of the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley prior, Pride Of Jenni will return to Melbourne this week and remains in contention for the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington, both of which she captured in 2023. “As we know, her asset is to roll and pinch a margin,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told Racing.com. “She’s very good at maintaining speed, but once she doesn’t catch a break, she’s obviously a bit closer to them and they can make the ground back on her. She’ll come back on Wednesday at this stage, we still have the Empire Rose and the Champions Mile at the end of the carnival. The main thing is, she’s happy and healthy but clearly we need to get her back to what she was first up.”

Geelong Cup meeting postponed due to dangerous winds

Geelong’s feature race day was postponed after high winds forced Racing Victoria stewards to call off the meeting just after 3pm on Wednesday. The decision followed consultation with emergency services, the Bureau of Meteorology, jockeys and the Geelong Racing Club, after strong gusts swept across the course throughout the afternoon. Earlier, the meeting had been delayed indefinitely as conditions deteriorated, with patrons in marquees moved indoors for safety. RV steward Corie Waller said forecasts indicated the wind was unlikely to ease in time for racing to safely resume and, even then, stewards could not be certain that conditions would improve enough to run the meeting. RV’s head of racing Paul Bloodworth confirmed that the remaining races will now be held on Thursday, with Race 4, the first of six events, scheduled to start at 2:25pm (AEDT) and the final race at 5:30pm. The rescheduled program includes the day’s two feature events, the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m).

Thompson fined $7,500

John Thompson has been fined $7,500 after trendione and epitrenbolone was detected in American Starlet’s (American Pharoah) post-race sample following her second-placed finish in a Benchmark 72 (1600m) at Warwick Farm on July 30. The mare was disqualified and the places amended.

Nepheti bounces back with strong Te Aroha victory

Nepheti (Charm Spirit) returned to winning form at Te Aroha on Wednesday, kicking off her five-year-old season in style with a determined performance in The George Abernathy and Associates 1150 (1150m). A stakes-performed filly at three, Nepheti had been consistent without breaking through last campaign but signalled she was back to her best with two sharp trial runs leading into her return. After the late scratching of key rival Magice (Savabeel), Joe Doyle had Nepheti away cleanly, settling her just off the speed. Turning for home, Doyle was presented with a dream run through, and Nepheti surged powerfully inside the final 100 metres to draw clear and score by 0.8 lengths over Miss Madridista (Shamexpress) and Mr Fortrus (Magnus). Co-trainer Shaune Ritchie, who prepares the mare in partnership with Colm Murray, was thrilled to see her bounce back. “She was stakes-placed as a three-year-old and we thought she was going to be much stronger at four, but we just flatted her first-up running from a wide gate on an off track,” Ritchie said. “That knocked her over as a four-year-old, so she’s come back stronger as a five-year-old. There was a lot of depth in those trials and she was strong at the line… she looked a bit flat at the top of the straight, but she got into that next gear and the $15 looked good.”

Vamos striking perfect conditions in the south

Kelvin Tyler will keep reliable stayer Vamos (Vadamos) close to home as he looks to round out a productive campaign on a winning note. The six-year-old thrives in heavy conditions, with five of his seven career wins coming on rain-affected ground, and Tyler has chosen to stay local with Thursday’s Auto Funds Open (1800m) at Gore, followed by an 2200-metre open handicap at Riverton next week. “He’s a lovely big horse, he’s at the top of the weights again this week but I think if I brought him up here [Canterbury] on the really firm tracks, he wouldn’t cope,” Tyler said. “We’re a bit restricted to where we race him, so we’ll run at Gore and then probably head to Riverton next week. After that, I might give him a freshen-up and bring him in for the autumn.” Tyler described Vamos as “definitely a staying horse”, noting that he’s ideally suited to 2000 metres and beyond. Apprentice Floor Moerman will take three kilos off his impost, reducing his weight to 57 kilograms. Meanwhile, Tyler is in Christchurch with a trio of Riccarton runners, including Four The Moment (Proisir), who tackles Saturday’s War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). The three-year-old lost ground at the start in the Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) but has bounced back well. “I have a lot of faith in him,” Tyler said. “He’s really matured since being up here and works around like a nice old stayer now.” Open-class pair Master Marko (Contributer) and Prince Alby (Contributer) line up in the Sothy’s Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m), with the latter being aimed towards the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m).

Shaw maidens ready to strike at New Plymouth

Josh Shaw will take a three-strong team to New Plymouth on Friday, headlined by a pair of consistent maidens he hopes can finally crack their first win. Stable stalwart Sweet Envy (Sweet Orange) lines up in the NZB Mega Maiden Series (1200m) and looks overdue after placing in five of her last six starts. “She has been going good races,” Shaw said. “We would ideally have liked to have gone to Otaki a couple of weeks ago when they were called off. With five weeks between runs, I have freshened her up a little bit and dropping back to 1200 metres in what looks like a pretty good field, she should be half a chance.” Drawn barrier one, Joe Doyle will take the ride. “It’s not the best place to be, but she usually jumps the lids pretty quick,” Shaw said. “If she can jump clear of them, she might be able to work her way off them and get into a position where she needs to be.” Stablemate Predecessor (Eminent) will contest the Bryce Revell (1600m) and has been backed into $3.70 favouritism, with Shaw confident she’s ready to deliver. “She has had a good break after her last run at Hawera…she has put on really good condition,” he said. “Amber [Riddell] takes a couple of kilos off, so she gets down to 54.5kg… I think she can really put her foot in the till.” Shaw also saddles up Billy Easton (Road To Rock) second-up in the Janelle Millar (1800m), as he continues his comeback after an 18-month spell.

JPN: Well-related son of Kitasan Black headlines Northern Farm Mixed Sale

Kitasan Black (Credit: Shadai Stallion Station)

A well-related colt by Kitasan Black (Black Tide) was the headline act of Tuesday’s Northern Farm Mixed Sale when selling to Louisville Racing for ¥506 million (approx. AU$5,133,370).

For the second consecutive year the foal section of the sale recorded a 100 per cent clearance rate with 66 foals selling for an aggregate of ¥4,776,200,000 (approx. AU$48,454,550), up 22 per cent on last year’s sale. The average finished at ¥72,366,666 (approx. AU$734,160), a three per cent dip on the 2024 edition.

The top lot is out of the Listed-winning mare Delphinia, who also finished runner-up twice at the highest level in France and the UK. The daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) is a sister to Listed winner Indian Maharaja, with the pair being out of Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) and Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) scorer Again.

Delphinia is also the dam of the Lila Emblem, Grade 3-winning son of Kizuna (Deep Impact) who made ¥79.2 million at the 2022 edition of the sale. A brother to Tuesday’s top-seller was bought by Rodeo Japan for ¥649m at last year’s JRA Select Yearling and Foal Sale.

Louisville Racing also signed for the second most expensive foal when they secured a colt by Epiphaneia for ¥242m (approx. AU$2,455,000)

Early on in the session, the Equinox (Kitasan Black) colt out of Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Incarville (Wootton Bassett) fetched ¥187m (approx. AU$897,110) to the bid of Masahide Abe. It is the third good result for the progeny out of the daughter of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) with her Palace Pier colt making ¥61.6m at the JRHA Select Sale in 2024, while her son of Kizuna was bought for ¥220m at last year’s Northern Farm Mixed Sale.

The mare section of the sale was led by Mikki Macaron, a dual-winning daughter of Kitasan Black, who brought ¥47.3m (approx. AU$479,860) from Shimoyashiki Bokujo. The mare is out of US Grade 3 scorer Sugar Shock, the dam of four further winners including Graded-winning pair Ecoro Bloom and Lagom.

A total of 53 broodmares sold for ¥670.45m (approx. AU$6,801,710) at an average of ¥12.65m (approx. AU$128,330), one per behind on last year’s sale.

HK: Tomodachi Kokoroe steps up for stiff Premier Bowl task this Sunday

Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon) has emerged as an unlikely candidate for the Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) following a pair of supercharged wins in Class 2, and jockey Harry Bentley, 33, is hoping a light weight can give the Written Tycoon gelding an edge on Sunday. He will line up at Sha Tin against towering opposition led by John Size’s sprint star Helios Express (Toronado), who last season placed four times at Group 1 level behind Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2024/25) Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress). Trained by David Hayes, Tomodachi Kokoroe has shot to prominence this season with two wins from two runs, including the first in a new Class 2 record time (1m 07.76s) for 1200m on turf at Sha Tin before the second came by a neck on October 12 as a well-backed race favourite. “He’s [Tomodachi Kokoroe] a horse that has found a remarkable vein of form at the age of seven, which is an incredible training performance to get him to that point. Obviously, he comes into the race off the back of two wins and he’s going to be carrying a light weight here. So, he’s stepping up into uncharted waters being a Group 2 race, but you’ve got to respect him given his recent form,” Bentley said. “115 [pounds] is no weight and he’s a horse that’s in such good form. We know that 1200 metres is his absolute perfect trip, so you’re going in with some hope at least.”

FR: Night Of Thunder as well-bred colt brings €450,000 at Arqana

Lot 86: Night Of Thunder ex Katara colt (Credit: Arqana)

Buyers have barely had a chance to catch their breath from a busy fortnight of business at Tattersalls, but Nurlan Bizakov was one of those back on the bridle at Arqana on Tuesday and the Sumbe principal duly went to €450,000 (approx. AU$803,500) for a well-related son of Night Of Thunder during the opening stanza of the five-day October Yearling Sale. The colt was bred by Al Shaqab Racing and is the second foal out of Listed-winning mare Katara, a homebred daughter of Deep Impact (Sunday Silence). He was presented by Windermere Stud. “He was our pick of the day,” said Sumbe’s racing and sales manager Mario Gussago. “Night Of Thunder has, of course, been having an amazing season, and his recent results really show what a great stallion he is. Physically, this horse is perfect. He moves very well and he comes from a very good breeding operation. He’s out of a black-type mare too, so it’s all there. Hopefully he’ll be lucky for the boss. The trainer hasn’t been chosen yet but we’ll take him home and see what the boss would like to do. He’s something to look forward to for next season wherever he goes.” Gussago added: “Of course Mr Bizakov thinks about the future, we have a stallion operation, so hopefully we can have the first son of Night Of Thunder standing in France.” Despite 17 more lots coming under the hammer than 12 months ago, 21 fewer yearlings changed hands, resulting in a 23 per cent drop in turnover at €13,788,500 (approx. AU$24,621,780). The average price was also down by 12 per cent to €92,540 (approx. AU$165,200), while the median was back by five points at €70,000 (AU$125,000).

US: Two $500,000 colts headline second session at the Fasig-Tipton

A pair of colts realised US$500,000 (approx. AU$769,190) during the second session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale on Tuesday in Lexington. Hill ‘N’ Dale’s youngster by Life Is Good (Distorted Humor) shot to the top of the leaderboard after being purchased by OGMA Investments, before Blake-Albina Thoroughbreds’ colt by Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) joined him when he was secured by Mahmud Mouni a few lots later. Gustavo Delgado Jr. of OGMA Investments said he had been keen to buy a youngster by the WinStar Farm-based stallion Life Is Good, but failed to land a blow at the Keeneland sale last month. In Keeneland, 60 yearlings by Life If Good sold for total receipts of $18.227 million and a recorded average of $303,780. "What's not to like?" Delgado told Bloodhorse. "He's a beautiful horse, his frame, he's a nice horse. We aim for two-turn horses, races on Saturdays, that kind of thing. He looks like one of the horses that can take you there. I think we're going to be fine with this one. But like anything, you have to be lucky." At the conclusion of the second session, 263 horses had changed hands for a total of $15,912,000 (approx. AU$24,478,690), up two per cent on last year’s corresponding session. The average price was up nine per cent at $60,502 (approx. AU$93,080), while the median rose 60 per cent to $32,000 (approx. AU$49,230).

Snippets’ Lass

ANZ News

World breeding has produced its selection of famed superior broodmares you love to see in pedigrees, the likes of Best In Show, Natalma, Lalun, Flower Bowl and La Troienne.

Australasia has also been blessed by mares whose influence has spread far and wide, such as Scandinavia, Shantha’s Choice, Eight Carat and Decidity.

And this week is a perfect time to recognise the impact of another - Snippets' Lass (Snippets).

At Caulfield on Saturday, Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) became her rising sire’s first elite winner in taking the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Snippets' Lass is her fourth dam.

Forty-five minutes later, the remarkable Private Eye (Al Maher) took his earnings to $12.64 million by claiming the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). Five years older than Ole Dancer, he has Snippets' Lass as his third dam.

Two years ago, Rediener (Redoute’s Choice) won the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). Snippets' Lass is his second dam, and he’s closely related to Ole Dancer, both coming into being thanks to breeding maven Neil Werrett.

Snippets' Lass is present in far more Australasian pedigrees than just by sitting a few rungs back on the above three female lines.

That’s because the greatest gift she’s left us was her colossal son Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), the six-time stakes winner who spread his dam’s genes through more than 2300 foals - 161 of them stakes winners - en route to four Champion Sire titles from 2017 to 2020.

Aside from Snitzel, Snippets' Lass threw Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), the dual black-type victor who left 21 stakes winners - four at the top level - in a stud career limited to just seven seasons by accidental death.

Snippets' Lass threw Snitzel’s full-sister Viennese, a dual stakes winner whose Darley-bred daughter Gloriette (Lonhro) produced Arcaded (Street Boss), who won a Group 2 and a Group 3 in 2021.

And Snippets' Lass produced Wiener (More Than Ready), who’s now the dam and third dam of two elite winners - Rediener and Ole Dancer.

To think what Snippets' Lass might have done. All of this came from just six named foals in seven years at stud before a premature end in 2007, aged just 14.

Snippets' Lass was bred by the Baxter family’s MacQuarie Stud near Wellington.

She was by the influential Snippets (Lunchtime), winner of the inaugural Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and seven subsequent stakes races - three at the top level - and the sire of 55 stakes winners.

Snippets' Lass was the first Australian foal for the taproot of all her descendants, Snow Finch (Storm Bird), an Irish Listed winner who’d left a city victor among four British-bred foals.

Eight years after Snippets' Lass, Snow Finch left a brother who became her other black-type horse, triple stakes winner Captain Bax.

Raced by Queensland prawn farmer Francois Naude - who would later breed Snitzel and all five of his siblings - Snippets' Lass was pretty handy on the track.

Trained throughout by Bill Mitchell of the Yarraman Mitchells, she virtually lived in stakes grade, but couldn’t break out of Listed class, running at that level no fewer than 17 times, for two wins and six seconds. She made just one higher appearance, a failure in a Flemington Group 3.

She was not only handy but hardy. She didn’t race until four, but she sure made up for lost time, running on no fewer than 21 occasions in the 12 months to May, 1999.

Promoted to city grade at start four, she ran second four times in a row, by less than a length. But just when people were writing her off as the ghost of Tom Melbourne past, she won three of her next five, also in Sydney metro class.

Her first two Listed appearances followed in the spring of 1998, for two more seconds, before she finally broke through in her eighth attempt at that level the following April, taking the AJC Sapphire Stakes over 1200 metres.

Five months later she added Caulfield’s How Now Stakes (Listed, 1200m), and she bowed out in May 2000, with seven wins and 13 minors from 41 starts, and a decent-for-back-then $289,000.

At stud and in the sales ring, Snippets' Lass’s impact has been profound.

In four straight years at Magic Millions Gold Coast: Gerald Ryan bought her second foal, the yearling Snitzel, for $260,000, and 12 months later his half-sister Wiener for $350,000;

In 2006, with Snitzel’s class confirmed, third foal Royal Snippets (Royal Academy) fetched $775,000, sold to Wadham Park, before Darley paid $1.4 million to make Viennese the third-highest lot at the 2007 auction.

Wiener ran third in the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) of 2005 but couldn’t win in a career restricted to five starts.

Werrett comes into the picture, and the family, when Wiener changed hands for $1.25m at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2007. He bred all 13 of her offspring, some with long-term associate Max Whitby, with whom he races Ole Dancer and Rediener (among many others).

Before Rediener, Wiener bore another stakes winner in Rathlin (Fastnet Rock) and two stakes placegetters including Za Zi Ba (All Too Hard), who’s now the dam of the Ryan-trained Group 3 winner King Of Pop (Farnan).

Wiener’s second foal Viennese Lass (Redoute’s Choice) was unraced but, retained by Werrett, she became the dam of the Listed-placed Viennese Star (I Am Invincible) and, one year earlier, Dancers (Husson).

Trained by Brad Widdup for Werrett and Damion Flower, Dancers - a $230,000 yearling - won twice at her home track of Hawkesbury among 11 starts, with her career highlight a fifth at Group 3 level.

At stud, she’s been a little up and down, with three successes mixed with three misses and a foal deceased after birth.

Snippets’ Lass (Credit: Sportpix)

But after dual Melbourne city winner Ginger ’N’ Pink (Zoustar), her third foal was Ole Dancer, the latest Group 1 winner descended from Snippets' Lass.

Bought by trainers Moody Racing for $350,000, again at Magic Millions Gold Coast, Ole Dancer’s pedigree packs an impressive punch.

Her only spot of inbreeding is a relevant one - Snippets himself - at 5f x 5f.

It comes through another of those aforementioned superior mares, Scandinavia, the fourth dam of Ole Kirk, and of course Snippets' Lass, Ole Dancer’s fourth dam.

Peeling back another layer reveals the great Nijinsky (Northern Dancer) at 5m x 6m, 6f. Up top, he’s the third sire of Ole Kirk’s dam Naturale (Bel Esprit). Down below, he comes into Ole Dancer’s damsire Husson’s female half, and is present through Dancing Show, dam of another great mare Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), the mother of Ole Dancer’s second damsire Redoute’s Choice.

Where there’s Dancing Show there’ll be her second dam, another first-paragraph dweller Best In Show.

And the hope that that all-timer will be repeated comes to fruition, in a 7f x 7f. At the top, the 1960s great comes in strong via daughter Sex Appeal (Buckpasser), dam of Ole Dancer’s fifth sire Try My Best (Northern Dancer). Down south, Best In Show is Redoute’s Choice’s fourth dam.

Natalma (Native Dancer) underpins it all as the most repeated mare, with 11 spots in the first nine generations, ahead of Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim) with ten.

The dominant sire is Nearco (Pharos) with 19 mentions, while his son Nasrullah has 15.

Ole Dancer is the result of the first of four straight matings with Ole Kirk, and is the only live foal from that run.

Werrett is trying again, with Dancers covered by Ole Kirk again the day after Ole Dancer’s Thousand Guineas triumph. Ginger ’N’ Pink was also covered by Ole Kirk on Sunday.

With Ole Dancer’s value as a broodmare now secured, and with Werrett’s ample resources sure to line up some quality matings for her, Snippets' Lass’s legacy looks set to continue for many years.

Legend grows as Purton reaches 1,900-win milestone

Talents Supremo (Credit: HKJC)

Zac Purton’s storied career surpassed yet another milestone on Wednesday at Happy Valley, as Hong Kong’s all-time leading jockey captured his 1,900th win in the city aboard Talents Supremo (Bated Breath) in the Class 5 Success Handicap (1200m).

Just four days after landing The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) with Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2024/25) Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), Purton, 42, was proud to reach the landmark with trainer Danny Shum.

“It’s a really good number to get to. Obviously, I can’t do it without the support that I get, and it was nice to do it on one of Danny’s horses as well, because he has been my biggest supporter across my time in Hong Kong,” Purton said. “I just had the right horse, right gate (three), right run and things fell into place, but that’s what you need at Happy Valley and that’s what you need in Hong Kong.”

An eight-time Hong Kong Champion Jockey (2013/14, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 & 2024/25), Purton is from Lismore, Australia. He made the move to Hong Kong, China in 2007, and rode his first winner (Elfhelm) at Happy Valley that same year, while this evening’s 1,900th success came at his 10,735th ride.

“It means a lot. It means I’ve been given a lot of opportunities, and I have had very good support. I’m very thankful to all the owners and trainers for everything that they have given me and also The Hong Kong Jockey Club for giving me the opportunity to come here and ride as well, I’ll forever be in debt and thankful to them,” Purton said.

Purton began his career with trainer Trevor Hardy in Coffs Harbour, Australia, as an apprentice aged 14. His first win came 25 years ago aboard Magic Zap (Zephyr Zip) at Armidale, and since then, he’s secured his place among racing’s greats atop champions including Ka Ying Rising, Beauty Generation (Road To Rock), Exultant (Exceed And Excel), Aerovelocity (Pins), Ambitious Dragon (Pins) and Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse).

Zac Purton (Credit: HKJC)

“It’s a lot of years of a lot of hard work. You have your ups and downs – I’ve had to battle through injury, the fights for the titles, but when I sit there at home and I look at the trophy cabinet – it feels pretty good,” Purton said.

Douglas Whyte (1,813 Hong Kong wins) and Joao Moreira (1,240) are the only other riders to surpass the 1,000-win mark in Hong Kong, while Tony Cruz (946) and Brett Prebble (806) trail the trio in fourth and fifth spot on the all-time list.

Purton said: “It’s possible [to reach 2,000 winners] as long as I stay fit and healthy. There’s no doubt that I can get to it, so hopefully I can get to it as quickly as I can because it’s a very big number to get to. It gives me something to think about and it gives me some direction for the next few months of the season.”

A dominant force in Hong Kong’s riding ranks in recent years, Purton is the third Australian to win a riding championship in the jurisdiction, after Gary Moore and Noel Barker. He has won top-level races in Australia, Japan, Singapore and Great Britain, notably the 2012 Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) on Little Bridge (Faltaat) for Shum at Royal Ascot.

Purton moved to 1,901 Hong Kong wins as South Star (Wrote) sauntered to a third career win in the Class 3 Songs Of Victory Handicap (1650m) for trainer Frankie Lor. Purton then made it a treble aboard Akashvani (Alpine Eagle) in the Class 3 Flying Handicap (1200m) for trainer David Hayes, who celebrated his 63rd birthday today.

Mark Newnham – who has tallied an unrivalled 17 wins through the first 13 fixtures – also grabbed a treble as Youthful Spirits (Shamus Award) made all in the Class 2 The LONGINES Cup Handicap (1000m) under Luke Ferraris, who earlier drove King Oberon (Divine Prophet) to success for trainer Douglas Whyte in the first section of the Class 4 Swifty Handicap (1200m).

Youthful Spirits (Credit: HKJC)

“This horse [Youthful Spirits] has given me sleepless nights. He’s just so frustrating with his racing pattern – he has a high head carriage, and he had that breathing problem. He is relaxing better in his races now, but the amount of seconds I’ve run on him [seven]…” Ferraris said.

“He was really good today, when he got to the furlong where he usually comes up for oxygen, he found another gear, which is all he needed to do to be winning races like this. Well done to Mark and his team – he’s been in superb condition and they’re flying.”

Newnham’s three-timer commenced when Looks Outstanding (All Too Hard) dominated the second section of the Class 4 Swifty Handicap (1200m) with jockey Lyle Hewitson before Hong Kong International Sale graduate Super Unicorn (Savabeel) collected the Class 4 Racing Spirit Handicap (1650m) under Andrea Atzeni.

“It’s been a very good start to the season, but a very long way to go,” Newnham said. “For the two years I’ve been here, Pierre [Ng] had a big lead and just got run down and last year John Size was a long way behind and still won it, so I think we’ll start thinking about it in June or July.”

The third section of the Class 4 Swifty Handicap (1200m) went to Ellis Wong aboard Silver Spurs (Charm Spirit) for trainer Caspar Fownes. Beauty Thunder (Night Of Thunder) bagged the Class 4 Speedy Handicap (1000m) for trainer Cody Mo and jockey Alexis Badel.

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday at Sha Tin with the running of the Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m).
