The Paul Preusker-trained Torranzino (Tarzino) booked his spot in next month’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with a stirring victory in Thursday’s Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m).

The son of Tarzino (Tavistock) was up on the pace early, settling one off the fence in fourth position under regular rider Celine Gaudray. When asked the question at the top of the straight, the gelding quickly got the better of eventual sixth Changingoftheguard (Galileo) before gamely running down $1.80 favourite Gilded Water (Fastnet Rock) to claim his second Group 3 win by a half-length. Berkeley Square (Territories) was third, another 0.4 lengths adrift.

Torranzino earned an automatic berth into the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 4 with victory in the feature, delayed by one day due to dangerous winds on Wednesday, which prompted the withdrawal of last year’s winner Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In).

“We're super excited to get another go [at the Cup], " Preusker said post-race. “That's what it's all about for me, getting a go. Celine's got that job done for me.

“He's done plenty of work; I love the way he's going. The plans changed, the few hurdles that we faced [on Wednesday] – anyway, he's come through it. We might camp away next time.”

Winner of the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at The Valley back in April before a second-place finish in the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m), Torranzino had been unplaced in his first three outings this prep before a much-improved effort when second to subsequent Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) third Valiant King (Roaring Lion) in the Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2520m) at Flemington earlier this month.

“He's been an unbelievable horse all the way through,” the winning trainer said. “He's wanted to do things his way. I've hurdle schooled him, steeple schooled him, we’ve locked horns plenty of times, but eventually he won, and he's a happy horse now.”

Preusker was buoyed to get another crack at the Cup and said the six-year-old won’t need to do much more before the first Tuesday in November.

“If you can get a chance, you're a chance, and you learn every time you get into it,” he said. “So grateful for the opportunity to go again. He's a horse that does well, so we'll just keep him ticking over. He'll do plenty in between, but we won't ask him for anything more. He's fit.”

Azazel set for Derby date

Azazel (Credit: Racing Photos)

Upcoming stayer Azazel (3 g ex Alagant Angel by Tavistock) booked his place in next Saturday’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington when scoring his second career victory in the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) on Thursday.

Raced in the silks of OTI Racing, the son of Shocking finished strongly under Michael Dee to beat Nick Ryan’s Highvol (Microphone) by 0.35 lengths, with Chris Waller’s Savisanta (Savabeel) a further 0.4 lengths behind in third, encouraging connections to press on towards the three-year-old staying feature.

"A big relief. He toughed it out,” winning trainer Mark Walker’s assistant Ben Gleeson said. “When I saw them slacken the pace and make it a sit-sprint, it was never going to suit this horse.

“Credit to Mick, he took off at the right time and the horse was gallant. Thrilled to get this win for OTI - our first stakes winner for them. They've given us two horses to use our craft with and going into a Derby. It is very rare that you pilot a path at the start of the spring to get to a Derby and everything goes smoothly and it has been exactly that. He'll love the 2500 [metres of the Victoria Derby].

Ben Gleeson

“We bought him with that profile in mind. Beautiful Shocking family and hopefully we get a strongly run 2500 and a true staying test. He appreciates the give [in the ground]. Hope there is a bit of rain around next Saturday and if there is give in the ground he'll be in the finish."

Winning rider Dee echoed Gleeson’s sentiment.

"They just kept coming back and back,” he said. “My horse doesn't have a great turn-of-foot but he keeps grinding away. We did want to ride him a bit quieter to try and see a turn-of-foot today but the way it panned out we just had to go and put ourselves into the race and he was really grinding at the top of the straight but I felt he was doing it quite comfortably.

“When he hit the front he was still a bit green and he's probably a horse that isn't going to win by a huge margin but he's got a great will to win and he's improved each time he steps out. He looked a picture in the yard and he'll definitely give a sight in the Derby. Ben said he's kept on improving and he's got more to some. He'll be peaking on the right day."

Yulong dismiss ‘completely untrue’ rumours over continued absence of Zhang Yuesheng

Yulong’s pin-up mare Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) will strive to join the select group of dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winners on Saturday before a packed crowd at Moonee Valley - but with one notable absentee.

Zhang Yuesheng, Yulong’s founder, will be in China as his absence from the Australian scene continues, though the green and white empire has confirmed he will be back to oversee his stud’s draft at the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast in January.

Yulong has offered an explanation as to Zhang’s recent surprising absence, saying the company’s boss has been tied up with business in China and will likely return here in December.

Though a constant presence at major Australian race meetings involving his horses in recent years, Zhang was an absentee from Saturday’s Everest meeting, in which Yulong had two runners in the main event in Angel Capital (Harry Angel) and Magic Time (Hellbent).

He was also not present at last week’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale, or for Via Sistina’s last-start third in Flemington’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on October 4.

While Zhang’s absences sparked surprise and speculation in some quarters, Yulong general manager Jun Zhang said the company’s owner had had to catch up on business in China, where he has vast coal mining holdings among other ventures, since he had spent considerable time in Australia recently.

“It’s just business things that couldn’t make him be here,” Jun Zhang, who is also Zhang’s son-in-law, told ANZ News.

“He had a lot of government meetings and a lot of jobs he couldn’t finish, and [had to] catch up with local government.

I just wanted to take a moment to address the recent rumours about Yulong, they’re completely untrue

Jun Zhang

“So they do have a lot of meetings with him, so this is the main reason he couldn’t push his meetings back in China.”

Jun Zhang said the Yulong principal would return in time for Magic Millions Gold Coast which gets underway on January 13.

“He’ll be coming back probably in December,” he said. “He will be here for the Magic Millions January sale.”

Also on Thursday, Jun Zhang sent a text message to a range of breeding industry participants to address rumours which have circulated surrounding Zhang Yuesheng’s absence.

“I just wanted to take a moment to address the recent rumours about Yulong, they’re completely untrue,” Jun Zhang wrote in the text, seen by ANZ.

“Thank you all for your concern and support. I’m sorry this kind of talk has been circulating and causing some unnecessary distraction. Let’s stay focused on what really matters which is enjoying the racing season and continuing the great work we’re all doing together.

“Really appreciate everyone’s effort and commitment to Yulong.”

Via Sistina is favourite at around $2.20 for the last Cox Plate before Moonee Valley’s redevelopment, in a field reduced to eight on Thursday by the scratching of Globe (Charm Spirit).

26 for Shocking

Shocking (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)

Rich Hill Stud sire Shocking (Street Cry) notched his 26th individual stakes winner when promising gelding Azazel (3 g ex Alagant Angel by Tavistock) took out Thursday’s Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m). Ridden by Michael Dee for Mark Walker, the gelding fought home strongly to defeat Nick Ryan’s Highvol (Microphone) by 0.35 lengths, with Chris Waller’s Savisanta (Savabeel) a further 0.4 lengths behind in third. Bred in New Zealand by Mrs AA Corcoran, the gelding was a $15,000 buy for Game Lodge from Grangewilliam Stud at the 2024 NZB Karaka National Yearling Sale, and was subsequently purchased by David Ellis and OTI Racing for $140,000 from Riverrock Farm’s 2024 NZB Karaka Ready to Run Sale draft. He is the first foal out of Alagant Angel (Tavistock), herself a daughter of Group 2 winner Alagant Satin (Al Akbar). Shocking stands at Rich Hill Stud for $10,000 (plus GST).

Shinn hopes Antino can rise to Cox Plate task

Champion jockey Blake Shinn believes only a top-class horse can win the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) – and he’s hopeful Antino (Redwood) is the one to deliver him his first victory in Australia’s weight-for-age championship at The Valley on Saturday. “This race really has everything year after year,” Shinn said. “There’s always a great story about it and there’s so much history. It’s what we call the weight-for-age championship of our sport at 2000 metres. It is the best of the best and hopefully me and Antino can come out on top. I think he deserves all the accolades, but it won’t be easy with the reigning champion Via Sistina, though I feel he’s good enough to do it.” The potential lack of early pace in Saturday’s contest doesn’t worry Shinn, who plans to ride his own race. “Antino is quite adaptable,” he said. “He’s got a turn of foot and can make a sustained run. He’s now at a fitness level where I can make two runs on him if I need to.” Although winless this campaign, Antino has been building strongly, including a gallant second in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) behind Sir Delius (Frankel) earlier this month. “His run in the Turnbull was incredible,” Shinn said. “He carried more weight than most of them [59 kilograms], covered ground and was right there to the end. It was the run of a genuine weight-for-age horse. You need a champion to win this race, and hopefully Antino can prove to be one.”

Globe ruled out of Plate bid

Last-start Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Globe (Charm Spirit) was scratched from the Cox Plate following veterinary advice on Thursday morning. Racing Victoria stewards released a statement via X which stated: “RV Stewards have withdrawn Globe at 9.56am acting on veterinary advice. The horse was found to be lame in its off fore upon inspection by RV veterinarians this morning.” The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable subsequently posted: “RV vets have just withdrawn Globe from the Cox Plate and I totally agree. The horse was not 100 per cent and the welfare of any horse comes before any race. He will be spelled and prepare for the autumn.”

Onesmoothoperator to tackle Moonee Valley Gold Cup

Last season’s Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) bypassed the rescheduled edition of the race on Thursday, with connections opting instead to run in Friday night’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m). The Brian Ellison-trained gelding was scratched on Thursday morning, with ownership group Boyle Bloodstock citing a change in track conditions as the reason for the decision. “[The] decision was made because of the change of going,” they told Racing.com. “More rain overnight meant it’s changed to Soft 7, so [we’re] going Friday instead where it’s hopefully better ground.” The switch will see Mark Zahra take the ride at The Valley, with Craig Williams, who had been set to partner the European raider at Geelong partnering the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Brayden Star (Twilight Son). A golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup is on offer to the Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner. Onesmoothoperator currently sits 26th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry.

Trav chasing Melbourne Cup berth at The Valley

New Zealand stayer Trav (Almanzor) will bid for a spot in next month’s Melbourne Cup when he lines up in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. The Raymond Connors-trained gelding, winner of the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) in the autumn, has been aimed at the Melbourne Cup since that victory, with two lead-up runs in New Zealand before crossing the Tasman this spring. Trav finished 11th in the The Bart Cummings at Flemington earlier this month under regular rider Masa Hashizume, and while Connors hoped for a stronger result, he remains optimistic. “He went well after the line, I would’ve liked to see him go a bit better, but I think it was a pass mark,” he said. “I’m hoping he’s improved since; Masa was happy enough and he’s the type where the further, the better. I think we’ll get a good line on him tomorrow night. Hopefully he can run well and put himself in the picture.” Connors considered targeting Wednesday’s Geelong Cup but chose to stay in Melbourne, a decision vindicated when the Geelong meeting was postponed. “Either race was going to be hard, but it’s not far to travel [to The Valley] and there is more of a likelihood of a better track, which he prefers,” he said. “Those were the two main reasons, he was probably better off in the handicaps in the Geelong Cup so hopefully I’ve made the right decision. It looked like the right call yesterday, at least we didn’t have to go through that ordeal.” Trav galloped at The Valley’s Breakfast with the Best on Tuesday morning, and Connors said the stayer continues to improve as he adjusts to his new surroundings. “He’s handled it pretty well, he’s started to do a lot better over the last week or so and his coat is looking good,” he said.

McEvoys’ Options on Derby path

Fresh off their breakthrough Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) triumph with Half Yours (St Jean), Tony and Calvin McEvoy are already plotting another Group 1 strike, this time with promising colt Options (Impending). The Godolphin-owned three-year-old is being primed for the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on November 1, but first will step out in Saturday’s Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m). In his first racing preparation, Options has quickly stamped himself as one of the emerging stayers of the spring. After consecutive wins at Echuca and Bendigo, he finished third in the Victoria Derby Preview (1800m) before bouncing back to land the Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington on October 4. The McEvoys had weighed up a start in last weekend’s Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) but chose to stick to their long-term plan, using Saturday’s Vase as the ideal Derby lead-up. “We’ve always loved the idea of the back-up,” Calvin McEvoy said. “We accepted last week, but it was always 30-70 [per cent] about running. I don’t think the 2500 metres will be a problem. Impending suggests he might not stay, but his dam side is very stout and everything about the horse suggests he will. He’s been very strong at the end of all his races.” Options had a look around The Valley during Breakfast With The Best on Tuesday, pleasing his trainers. “He got around there OK on Tuesday and now that he’s been there, I think he’ll be better next time around,” McEvoy added.

McDonald locked in for Cup ride on Meydaan

Meydaan (Credit:  Racing Photos)

Champion jockey James McDonald will partner Meydaan (Frankel) in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on November 4. McDonald’s booking for the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained son of Frankel (Galileo) – who finished ninth in the Caulfield Cup – was confirmed by racing broadcaster Gareth Hall on X. Ridden by Andrea Atzeni last Saturday, Meydaan endured a tough trip after being trapped three-wide from barrier five, finishing 4.7 lengths behind the winner Half Yours. Despite the run, connections remain confident the stayer can be a genuine Cup contender with a smoother passage. Before Cup Day, McDonald’s attention turns to Saturday’s Cox Plate, in which he will take the reins aboard favourite and defending champion Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) for Chris Waller.

Stefi Magnetica ready to relaunch in The Invitation

Jason Collett is hoping race fitness won’t prove costly when dual Group 1 winner Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) resumes in the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine has been sidelined since mid-September after a minor setback following her first-up fourth in the Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), prompting her trainer Bjorn Baker to alter the mare’s spring program. “She had a good hit out at the trials and a good gallop on Tuesday,’’ Collett told Racing NSW. “We think we’ve got her right and fit enough but we’ll find out more on Saturday. There are some fit runners in there that are going well so it isn’t going to be an easy task.” Stefi Magnetica had been aimed at the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m) prior to the interruption. Collett said the mare traditionally improves deeper into her preparation. “She possibly could have had a touch of the virus [first-up], she was exposed early in a slowly run race and carried weight too so that run wasn’t too bad,’’ he said. “Her best run was third-up in the Doncaster and I think it was similar when she won the Stradbroke as well. She’s not following the same pattern as previous preparations with that interruption and the setback in between.”

Wide draw challenge for Within The Law

Jason Collett faces a tough task aboard Within The Law (Lucky Vega) in Saturday’s Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick after the filly came up with the outside barrier. The three-year-old has enjoyed a busy spring, adding another elite-level placing in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and backing up from last week’s King Charles III Stakes, where she bled from one nostril and was required to gallop for vets on Wednesday before being cleared to start. “She’s not given an easy task from that barrier [15], that’s going to make it difficult,’’ Collett told Racing NSW. “I don’t think the 2000 metres will be a worry. I do note one of the other favourites [Attica] has drawn pretty wide too. It’s just where she’s going to get to, we’ll work out a plan but it does make the task more difficult.”

Militarize ready to strike in Craven Plate

Jason Collett believes Militarize (Dundeel) is ready to strike in Saturday’s Craven Plate (Gr 3, 1800m) at Randwick as he looks to turn the tables on Lindermann (Lonhro) after finishing fifth in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) two weeks ago. The gelding was shuffled back mid-race last start, leaving him with too much ground to make up on the leader, but Collett said he took plenty of encouragement from the performance. “He got a shuffle mid-race which made it difficult to make up the ground on Lindermann who controlled it up front,’’ the rider told Racing NSW. “The previous start we put him in the race and it didn’t really play out. I got great confidence off that last run. It’s a case of getting him to travel like he did last start and being as close to Lindermann as possible.”

Bain confident Dual Pressure can deliver in Gawler Cup

Dual Pressure (Credit: Racing Photos)

Local trainer Aaron Bain is eyeing redemption in his hometown Gawler Cup (1500m) on Friday, confident that big-ticket recruit Dual Pressure (Denman) can deliver a breakthrough victory. Bain, who trains in partnership with Ned Taylor out of Angaston Park in the Barossa Valley, went agonisingly close in the corresponding race last year when Midnight Mass (Proisir) stormed home to finish 0.4 lengths second behind Bamyan Buddha (Rich Enuff). “It’s a race that eluded us last year, so it’s no secret we want to win this year,” Bain said. “It’s not a Group 1 by any means, but emotionally it’s right up there – it’s our hometown Cup and means a lot to everyone involved.” Bain purchased Dual Pressure for $220,000 via Inglis Digital last December, with the former Mathew Ellerton-trained gelding quickly making an impression in South Australia. The five-year-old won on debut for the stable over 1200 metres in March and scored again at 1400 metres on his most recent start. The Gawler Cup will see him stretch to 1500 metres for the first time, a test Bain believes he’s ready for. “He’s a sound horse who’s really thrived since coming over,” Bain said. “He handled 1400 metres at Murray Bridge Cup Day, and stepping to 1500 metres now looks ideal. He’s drawn beautifully [3], and depending on tempo, we could land outside Air Assault or even take it up.”

Purton fires back over Haggas criticism

Champion jockey Zac Purton hit back after Maureen Haggas labelled his ride on Lake Forest (No Nay Never) in last Saturday’s King Charles III Stakes at Randwick “about the worst” she had ever seen. The wife of leading UK trainer William Haggas unleashed on Purton during an interview with Racing TV, saying she was “appalled” by his performance on the Golden Eagle (1500m) winner, who finished last of then 12 runners. “As far as I’m concerned, Lake Forest never had a race,” she said. “It was about the worst ride I’ve seen in my entire life. He knew what he had to do, and he just sat there like a big sissy. I was horrified.” Haggas added that Purton had ignored pre-race instructions and expressed frustration over the result. “We went all that way, at huge expense on the owner’s part, and it just makes you realise how lucky we are with the jockeys we have in England, Ireland and France.” Purton responded in typically dry fashion when asked about the comments on SENTrack’s Giddy Up with Gareth Hall on Thursday. “I thank her for her advice,” Purton said. “I haven’t had time to watch the replay yet, because I’ve been too busy watching replays of myself winning the $20 million Everest.” The eight-time Hong Kong champion defended his tactics, saying he was “bemused” by Haggas’s criticism. “I followed Ceolwulf, who went on to win the race, so I thought he wasn’t a bad horse to be following,” he said. “As soon as they quickened, my horse just went up and down on the one spot. He gave me no response at all. I’m a little bit bemused at her take on the race, but she’s entitled to that, no problem.”

Trentham to decide future paths of stablemates

Immediate plans for the Bill Thurlow and Sam O’Malley-trained Whangaehu (Proisir) and Landman (Hello Youmzain) will become clearer after their performances at Trentham on Sunday. Multiple stakes winner Whangaehu lines up in the Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) for the second start of his campaign after a below-par effort in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Te Rapa. “He was a bit disappointing to be honest,” Thurlow said of the last run. “He looks well but I’m just not sure where he’s at. He pulled up really well after the trial [at Foxton], but he had to be chased the whole way. We’ll see if he can turn it around on Sunday and that will give us a better idea of where we head.” The gelding is expected to appreciate more distance as the campaign unfolds, with the Balmerino Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Day among his potential targets. Stablemate Landman will contest a 1400-metre event for three-year-olds following a pleasing fourth at Riccarton behind subsequent Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) runner-up Alottago (Tagaloa). Travel disruptions caused by wild weather ruled out a planned start in Saturday’s War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton. “We thought we may have been able to get him back down there, but logistically it’s just too hard,” Thurlow said. “He’s in good shape for Sunday so we’ll see what happens and take it from there.”

Rae pair spot on in TAB Mile campaigns

Riccarton-based trainer Terri Rae has her spring team peaking at just the right time, with stable stars Spot On Time (Time Test) and Sir Albert (Savabeel) both primed for key assignments on their home track on Saturday as they build toward next month’s TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m). The pair produced a memorable double at Ashburton a fortnight ago, with Spot On Time scoring stylishly fresh-up over 1200 metres and Sir Albert taking out the Ashburton Cup (1600m). A six-time winner, Spot On Time will be chasing four straight wins in the TAB Mile Trial (1400m). “He’s a really nice, up-and-coming horse,” Rae said. “He’s always shown a lot and done no wrong. We were rapt with him fresh-up: most of his wins have been over 1400 metres, but he was smart enough to get away with it that day. With Perfect Scenario in, he’s ended up with a nice weight [56.5 kilograms] and he’s looking good heading toward the mile.” Stablemate Sir Albert steps out in the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m), where Rae is confident the proven stayer can secure a deserved black-type result. “We pushed him to the Dunedin Gold Cup trip last time in, which was a bit far for him,” she said. “He’s only a little horse, and the 2000 metres is his pet distance. He’s in great order.”

Adlington building towards Boxing Day with History Maker

Paul Adlington was all smiles at Te Aroha on Wednesday after History Maker (Mongolian Khan) broke through for his maiden win over 2200 metres – a victory years in the making for the dedicated horseman. Adlington revealed that his decision to buy the gelding came in defiance of advice from one of his own track riders. “He told me, ‘Don’t you ever buy a Mongolian Khan, they’re all mad,’” Adlington said. “So when Windsor Park had their dispersal on gavelhouse, I bought two of them just to prove him wrong!” One of those purchases was History Maker, who showed early promise before injuries and illness stalled his progress. “He was a magnificent two-year-old and we had Derby aspirations, but he had bruising in both knees,” Adlington said. “The vet said we could inject them and get a few races, or turn him out for six months and race him for life and that sounded better to me.” After another setback with a bacterial infection, History Maker finally made it to the races in July and had two placings before his deserved breakthrough. Despite missing the start at Te Aroha, he powered home under Courtney Barnes to win by 1.3 lengths. “It was marvellous,” Adlington said. “He’s been a bit silly out of the barriers lately, but once he got going, he did it really well.” History Maker will now have a week in the paddock before being aimed at the Stayers Championship Final (2400m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

HK: Badel bullish on Fast Network’s Premier Bowl prospects

Alexis Badel believes the improving Fast Network (Wrote) has the credentials to compete in elevated company when he steps out in Sunday’s Premier Bowl (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin. Badel partnered the Dennis Yip-trained five-year-old to a thrilling National Day Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1000m) victory three weeks ago, and said he can continue his impressive form on the 1200-metre course at Sha Tin, where he has won two of four outings. For that win, Fast Network was hit with a seven-point rating hike – to a career-high 111 – but the presence of top-rated sprint star Helios Express (Toronado) in the field has compressed the weights, handing the rest a lenient pull, and on Sunday, Badel’s mount will carry 1lb less for his National Day Cup effort. “I think he does [handle the step-up to Group 2]. I think the handicap plays in his favour,” said Badel, who won the Premier Bowl in 2022 aboard Wellington (All Too Hard). “He doesn’t carry too much weight – I think 124 [pounds] is more than reasonable.”

International

12 for Victor Ludorum

First-season shuttle sire Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) registered his 12th individual winner when Sila Mia (2 f ex Tara by Mastercraftsman) struck for the first time in a 1500-metre claimer at Deauville on Wednesday. Trained by Gianluca Bietolini, the filly was sent off a 21-1 chance after her runner-up finish at Saint Cloud last month but was a length and a quarter too good for her 11 rivals. She beat Charming Cecilia (Saxon Warrior) into second, with Beware Of The Bear (Bungle Inthejungle) another length and three-quarters back in third. Bred by Anthony Pakenham, Sila Mia was a €28,000 purchase for SAS international bloodstock management at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale in 2024. She is the first foal out of the winning Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) mare Tara, herself a half-sister to the Group 3-placed dual Listed winner Shine For You (Siyouni). Victor Ludorum is currently standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST), down from $13,750 in 2024.

US: Justify tops Coolmore America's 2026 roster

Coolmore America has announced its roster for 2026, with leading sire Justify (Scat Daddy) heading the way at US$200,000 (approx. AU$307,475). Fees for three of Coolmore America's new stallions in Sierra Leone (Gun Runner), Fierceness (City Of Light) and Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) will be decided after the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar, where the first two named will renew rivalry in the Classic (Gr 1, 10f). Coolmore America's director of sales Charlie O'Connor said: "With the three new stallion prospects set to retire for 2026 all lining up at the Breeders' Cup, there is a great sense of anticipation here. Last year's one-two Sierra Leone and Fierceness renew rivalry in the Classic. We believe Citizen Bull has been working very well in the lead-up to the Dirt Mile."

UK: Benvenuto Cellini to take his chance in Futurity Trophy

Next Season’s Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) favourite Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel) will head Aidan O'Brien's Futurity Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) team at Doncaster on Saturday, with the trainer saddling half of the field in Britain's final Group 1 of the season. The son of Frankel (Galileo) was an impressive winner of a Group 2 at Irish Champions Weekend on his last start, but his participation in the Doncaster highlight was uncertain earlier this week, which resulted in stablemate Hawk Mountain (Wootton Bassett) replacing him as favourite. However, he has been declared and will put his claims for next year's Classics on the line against five rivals, including Hawk Mountain, who won the Beresford Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) last month, and Action (Frankel). The home team will be led by Andrew Balding’s unbeaten Item (Frankel).

The Chris Waller-trained Panova (3 f ex Love Me Quietly by Trusting) registered a deserved maiden victory at her fourth career start on Saturday when scoring in the Reginald Allen Quality (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, the filly ran out a 0.7 lengths winner over Samarelle (Savabeel) with a further 1.3 lengths back to Chatterley (Snitzel) in third.

“It's such a big day in Australian sport, and we've brought racing from around the world to Sydney, and we're all very proud of it so it’s just awesome,” said Waller.

“It’s a good start to the day for our stable; a lovely ride from Tommy. He didn't panic from a wide draw, it just shows the track's perfect and you can win from anywhere.”

Prior to her runner-up finish on debut in July, Panova had five trials, two in the Ciaron Maher stable before a further three trials after transferring to the Waller operation.

She then finished fourth at her second career start in September before another second place finish, and the filly was ready to strike on Saturday.

Panova (AUS)

Xyo: (October 03, 2022)

Trainer: Chris Waller

Owner: B2B Thoroughbreds P/L

Sire:  Trapeze Artist

Dam: Love Me Quietly

Dam's Sire:  Trusting

Breeder: Mr JW Ramsey, NSW

“She was very unlucky not to run a place at Warwick Farm [over 1200 metres] and I said I can’t wait to get over 1400 metres. We found that today in a stakes race,” said Berry.

“It looked a bit ugly from the barrier, but I saw a bit of speed everywhere in the race, so I was hoping that would generate a bit of pressure early and we’d be able to sprint off the back of it. Getting to Randwick today, on a big track, was key.

“I was a couple of lengths off the back of them early so, when they jostled up in front of me and everybody was on heels, I was still just floating out the back.

“I was able to get on that three-wide line. I was probably the horse that had an uninterrupted run and that proved to be too good late.”

Panova was purchased for $325,000 by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock out of the Kenmore Lodge draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and runs for B2B Thoroughbreds.

She is the first foal out of Love Me Quietly (Trusting), a winning half-sister to Group 3 scorer Charge (Zoustar) from the family of Group winners Elite Falls (More Than Ready) and Niagara Falls (Danehill).

By Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), the win gifted her sire with his seventh individual stakes winner. Trapeze Artist is standing for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).
