The Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale (HIT) gets underway in Newmarket on Monday and it is a sale that has become an annual pilgrimage for many buyers from the southern hemisphere, who are expected to be active once again this week.

The Newmarked-based auction, the world’s largest horses in training sale, has built a reputation as an important outlet for top-end talent and the sale’s growing popularity can be backed up by the numbers. The winners of 183 Australian stakes races have been unearthed at the auction and perhaps more importantly, 24 of those successes were gained in Group 1 company.

What's On

“Buyers from the southern hemisphere have been targeting this sale for approximately 15 years, Chris Waller set the ball rolling, coming here and buying cheap horses in training at the Tatts Autumn Horses In Training sale specifically, taking them down and doing very well with them. Since then more people have cottoned on to it and there have been endless success stories from the sale,” Jason Singh, Tattersalls’ associate director of marketing, told ANZ News.

Last year the auction made headlines when Coolmore sold their then Group 3 winner known as ‘Delius’ to Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, De Burgh Equine, trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and Johnny and Susie McKeever for a sale record price of 1,300,000gns, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 1,000,000gns.

Now raced as Sir Delius, the son of Frankel (Galileo) has not only justified that mammoth price tag, but also enhanced the reputation of the sale further. The five-year-old announced himself as a horse to follow, kicking off his career in Australia in style with a victory in the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben back in May.

This preparation Sir Delius has collected two victories at Group 1 level, producing a stylish win over subsequent Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) runner-up Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and then easily accounted for Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), the winner of The Valley showpiece, in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

While it has not been plain sailing for the star performer since those victories, with stringent vet checks ruling him out of his planned runs in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), he looks a safe bet to dominate middle distance races during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

“I feel sorry for the Sir Delius connections that he wasn’t allowed to run in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup, but at least they have won a couple of Group 1s with him this spring. There is no better example of what can be bought at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale than him,” Singh said.

“You don’t normally get horses making that much at this sale, but I think it's recognition of what can be bought here. We’re doing adverts at the moment which I think illustrate perfectly what you can buy.

“I think since 2022, purchases from the HIT have won 173 Group and Listed races - that was our last advert and since then we have had Onesmoothoperator win the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and Spartan Arrow won a Group 3 at Dundalk, he was purchased last year for only 17,000gns, so the number climbs all the time. Even Onesmoothoperator cost his connections 65,000gns in 2021, so they are both great advertisements on the eve of the sale.”

The sale’s success this year has far from been about one horse. Royal Patronage (Wootton Bassett), a 300,000gns pick up for the McKeever Bloodstock, Waterhouse and Bott axis from the WH Bloodstock draft in 2023, proved his worth when winning the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m).

Meanwhile, Our Anchorage (Galileo) won last season’s Parramatta Cup (Listed, 1900m), having been bought by Hubie de Burgh and Darby Racing for 60,000gns in 2022. Also purchased at that edition was the Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Tajanis (Australia), who was a 40,000gns purchase by Albert Bosma’s Go Racing NZ.

Jason Singh

While the big prices garner much of the attention, Tajanis and Our Anchorage are two of many horses that show buyers do not need to have thick wallets for success.

“The fact is that every year there are horses who succeed across all different price points and I truly believe it presents something for everybody,” said Singh.

“There have been 15 individual Group 1 winners in Australia bought at this sale at every price point. Going back in time a bit, but the likes of My Kingdom of Fife he only cost 60,000gns, Fierce Impact he only cost 120,000gns, Foreteller, was one of Chris’s early horses and he only cost 100,000gns.

“The great thing for us, you can do as much advertising as you like, but in a way the best advert is what happens every Saturday. People can see European-breds winning races down there every Saturday, whether it’s Melbourne or Sydney or further afield and a lot of those horses are coming from this sale.”

Few have added to the reputation of the Autumn Horses in Training Sale in the southern hemisphere quite so successfully as Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Aside from Sir Delius and Royal Patronage, Tulloch Lodge have won The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2,400m) in 2023 with 300,000gns purchase Just Fine (Sea The Stars), while Knights Order (So You Think), a 250,000gns buy, landed the 2022 Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The stable also struck in the same two races when Waterhouse was the sole licence holder, taking out the 2012 Metropolitan with Glencadam Gold (Refuse To Bend) (135,000gns) and the 2014 Sydney Cup with The Offer (Montjeu) (200,000gns).

If you finally get a horse that has an interesting form, looks nice and passes the vet, everyone else will bid on that horse too

Johnny McKeever

All six of their top-flight winners were sourced from Tattersalls with the help of Johnny and Susie McKeever of McKeever Bloodstock, who, alongside Claudia Fitzgerald, bloodstock manager for the powerhouse operation, will renew their combined talent search with the stable at Tattersalls this week.

“It’s like detective work,” Johnny McKeever told ANZ News of the buying strategy. “You have to put all the horses through sieves. The first sieve is whether their form is interesting enough and if it is, you pass them through the second: What do they look like? Then the vet comes along and they have a very thin mesh and nine times out of ten and they fail the vet. If you finally get a horse that has an interesting form, looks nice and passes the vet, everyone else will bid on that horse too.”

When asked if there are any common traits between the horses Tulloch Lodge has invested in at the sale, McKeever said: “They are all extremely good looking horses and all conform to what Gai and Adrian like; very strong and athletic horses.

“They also conform to a certain type of physique, which we’ve come to the conclusion suits Australia well. Some of our purchases have come through the ranks like Just Fine, who was a handicapper when we bought him and he elevated himself and some, like Royal Patronage, who was a Group-winning two-year-old, we knew he was Group class, but he’d come a weird route having been trained in America for a year, so it was a bit more a gamble.

“Sir Delius was obviously a Group winner when we bought him, but was lightly raced and he was big and rangy, so you could imagine there was improvement to come.”

While the sale serves Australian buyers well, it is a swinging door in terms of what they bring to the table for the sales company. Since 2021 there has been a steady rise in the market share held by the buyers from Australia.

Last year, Australians bought 29 lots for an aggregate of 6,500,000gns, 18 per cent of the sale’s turnover, while in 2023 they spent 5,700,000gns, accounting for 16 per cent of the overall market. In 2022, Australians shelled out 6,000,000gns on 36 lots, making up 17 per cent of the market while the previous year they accounted for 11 per cent, having spent 3,700,000gns on 34 horses.

Year Bought Spend (gns) % market share
2024 29 6,500,000 18%
2023 43 5,700,000 16%
2022 36 6,000,000 17%
2021 34 3,700,000 11%

Singh anticipates this trend will continue with many southern hemisphere-based buyers expected to be out in force scanning the grounds in search of the next track star.

Despite the sale falling in the thick of the spring carnival, the big names tipped to be in attendance this year include Guy Mulcaster, talent scout for Waller, Ciaron Maher’s bloodstock manager Will Bourne and Annabel Archibald, who will be on the hunt for her next Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux). The trainer’s multiple Group 1-winning star was bought at the sale alongside Blandford Bloodstock’s Stuart Boman for 150,000gns in 2020. Other southern hemisphere buyers are also expected to be active through various European bloodstock agents.

Singh said: “We recognise that this sale isn’t at the perfect time for the principal trainers to actually come up themselves, but they are always well-represented and there are plenty of European bloodstock agents.”

Josh Rix, bloodstock manager at the powerful Lindsay Park operation, will also be among those trying to source stock to bolster their ranks.

Rix has arrived at Tattersalls for the Autumn Horses In Training Sale after an action-packed month sourcing northern hemisphere-bred yearlings for the Hayes brothers. His attendance at the horses in training sale is another way the stable are widening the net to give themselves more opportunities to compete in lucrative middle distances races.

“I’ve had a busy couple of weeks. We bought two yearlings at Book 2, two at Arqana and we also went in with OTI on a horse from the Arc sale,” Rix told ANZ News.

“We have a lot of support from our owners and it is definitely a stable driven strategy. We are obviously leading the charge with our yearling purchases and our two-year-olds, but we do need to start building on the depth of our stayers in the stable.

Johnny McKeever (Credit: Tattersalls)

“Obviously, the prize-money is heavily weighted towards the staying races in Australia, so to chase that you’ve got to go find the better horses for that and that leads you over here. It’s what the owners want, so it’s a matter of providing for our owners, but also looking at our business and what the stable needs - so it’s a bit of both. We have Mr Brightside, who is still acquitting himself very well and Evaporate, but if you look at the bigger stables they’ve got a lot of those sorts and we have to widen our net for more of those horses.”

Rix said Ben, JD and Will Hayes have done an enormous job to drum up support from the owners, something Tattersalls has also helped with.

“There are plenty of banner horses for the sale, which makes it easier to sell the horses from here, like Zaaki. It is a sale that does resonate with a lot of Aussies. For us to spend this amount of money there has to be a bit of lead in and ground work because we don’t have those really big clients who can come in and buy those $1 million horses, so the boys have hosted lunches and Tatts have come down and be part of that with us for the awareness.

“With all of that, they are putting in the effort to encourage us to get up here and we'll be lining up clients who have shown their interest and getting behind the stable, so we’re prepared for what we’re doing up here.”

Josh Rix

With over 1,600 horses catalogued for the five-day selling bonanza, the Lindsay Park team have called upon bloodstock agent Jamie McCalmont to help comb through the catalogue in search of horses who fit the criteria.

Rix said: “We decided this year we’d work with Jamie McCalmont. He has got ties to the stable through one of his big clients and we wanted to work with someone who wasn’t working with a lot of other trainers so that we were his first port of call and option. So he has been diving into the form.

“I sat down with him [Saturday] night and we went over the shortlist that he had compiled. We then looked at the form, bit of the breeding and the race replays, so we are accessing a horse on its own merit. We are looking at its action and what ground it runs on, obviously we get the firmer tracks at home so that is pretty important for us. Then [Sunday] we are going to look at the physicals, trot them up and see their action and if we like what we see we’ll then vet, which is the stage you lose a few.

“We’ve come up with a really nice shortlist of what we think fit the criteria. It’s a mixed bag with so many horses catalogued, but we definitely think we’ve found some horses, provided they pass the vet, we’d love to have in the stable.”

Josh Rix (Credit: Tattersalls)

Horses featured in the catalogue likely to be of interest to visitors from the southern hemisphere include Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) winner White Birch (Ulysses) (Lot 709), Molveno (Almanzor) (Lot 1110A), winner of the Italian Derby (Gr 2, 2200m) and German Group 2 scorer Geography (Holy Roman Emperor) (Lot 726A).

Singh believes there is a strong group of horses assembled for this year’s sale.

“The great thing is that year-in-year out, what is on offer at the sale tends to be fairly constant,” he said. “There has been a bit of a trend over the last few years to bring more of those sorts of horses to market whereas previously some of them would have been done privately.

“It is a pretty decent catalogue this year. A horse like White Birch, a Tattersalls Gold Cup winner, ran very respectively in the Irish Champion Stakes two starts ago and finished midfield in the Arc last start. There isn’t much difference to his form than Sir Delius’s even though he’s a little bit older.

“Geography also looks quite exciting and Marco Botti has Italian Derby winner Molveno. Like all sales, there are obvious standouts, but there are plenty of other horses in there which have very progressive form over a middle distance which suits Australia.”

The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale runs from Monday to Friday, with sessions starting at 9.30am local time (19.30 AEST).

Australia

198 for Fastnet Rock

El Rocko (Credit: Racing Photos)

Late Coolmore stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was provided with his 198th individual stakes winner courtesy of El Rocko’s (7 g ex Butters by El Prado) triumph in Sunday’s Sale Cup (Listed, 1600m). Trained by John McCardle, the seven-year-old finished third in the Seymour Cup (Listed, 1600m) on October 12 and he built on that performance, beating Cartoon Graveyard (Turffontein) by 1.8 lengths to land Listed honours. Cote Atlantique (Kodiac) finished a further 0.1 lengths away in third. El Rocko was bought by Pacific Bloodstock and Redgum Racing for $250,000 at the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is out of the Listed-winning mare Butters (El Prado) making him a three-quarters brother to Group 1 winner Foxplay (Foxwedge). Fastnet Rock, who was pensioned from stud duties last year, was euthanised last month.

Waller out for more Coolmore success

Chris Waller will chase a record-extending seventh victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Felmington on Saturday when he saddles Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Beiwacht (Bivouac) in the feature. Since the race was elevated to elite status in 2006, Waller has turned it into a personal stronghold, winning it with stars like Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), who all went on to stud success. Beiwacht had his first look at the track in a jump-out last Friday, finishing third, but Waller said it was purely about experience. “It’s really important,” he said. “It gives you confidence come race day, especially with Sydney horses who are used to having a running rail.” Beiwacht broke the race record in the Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 27, and Waller believes he has the right profile for Saturday. “He’s got what you need up the straight: the strength to run 1400 metres, he’s settled in well, and his training’s done. It’s just about keeping him fresh and happy now,” he said. A Coolmore win could also launch an international campaign, with talks already underway with Godolphin about possible runs in Dubai and Royal Ascot. “That straight-track experience could open doors,” Waller said. “You want to travel good colts because you only have them for a short time before they head to stud.” Adam Hyeronimus, who rode Beiwacht to his Golden Rose win, keeps the ride with James McDonald staying in Sydney.

Sepals cleared for Golden Eagle after injury scare

Group 1 winner Sepals (Calyx) has been cleared to take his place in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick after recovering from a worrying leg injury sustained a fortnight ago. Cliff Brown confirmed the talented four-year-old had suffered a deep laceration to his near hind leg when finishing last as favourite in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield, but said the setback is now behind him. “The first two or three days until Wednesday morning I thought, ‘We are in a bit of trouble here,’” the trainer told Racing.com. “But from that point on, he has just been sensational.” Sepals required two staples to close the wound, and Brown initially feared it might spell the end of his spring campaign. “He ended up with two staples in his back leg and I just thought, ‘What will I do?’ But since then, he’s really come on,” he said. The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner has since travelled to Sydney, where he galloped strongly during the week to prove his fitness. “He’s in Sydney now and he galloped great during the week, so he’ll go to The Golden Eagle with Ethan Brown to ride,” the trainer confirmed.

Flemington rematch likely for Via Sistina and Buckaroo

The pulsating Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) finish between stablemates Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) could have a sequel at Flemington, with Chris Waller confirming both horses are likely to clash again in the Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on November 8. The trainer said the pair had come through their runs in great order, after Via Sistina prevailed by a nose over Buckaroo. “With Via, we’ll see how she comes through it, but I expect we’ll go to the Champions Stakes over 2000 metres on the final day [of the Carnival],” Waller told Racing.com. “With Buckaroo, he’s in the Melbourne Cup, but he hasn’t had the same preparation as last year. You often hear horses have tough runs, but I’ve never seen a horse so exhausted after a race as he was after the Cup last year, so that sits in the back of my mind as to whether we try it again.” Waller’s ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Aeliana (Castelvecchio), who finished down the field after a tough run in the Cox Plate, will head to the paddock to strengthen ahead of next season.

Champions Mile next for Lake Forest

Lake Forest (No Nay Never) will head to Melbourne for his next start with connections revealing the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on November 8 is the immediate target for the colt following his much publicised last-place finish in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m). Maureen Haggas, wife of the European visitor’s trainer William, labelled Zac Purton’s ride at Randwick as “about the worse ride” she had seen before Purton hit back, saying he was "bemused". Either Cieren Fallon, successful on Lake Forest in last season’s Golden Eagle (1500m), or Tom Marquand will replace Purton on board. "He'll go to Melbourne now and either Tom will go down and ride him and Cieren will go and ride Bullet Point in the Five Diamonds in Sydney on the same day, or the other way around, because I don't think they've decided yet," Haggas told the Racing Post. "Cieren will ride one and Tom will ride the other."

Deakin ruled out of Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) contender Deakin (Australia) has been ruled out of this year’s race after failing a veterinary scan. The Phillip Stokes-trained and OTI Racing-owned stayer had earned an automatic berth in the Cup after winning the Roy Higgins Quality (Listed, 2600m) in March, with his entire spring preparation carefully designed around peaking for the first Tuesday in November. However, those plans came undone when a PET scan revealed changes in his fetlocks, forcing connections to withdraw the six-year-old from Cup contention. “It’s very unfortunate,” Stokes told Racing.com. “We did a PET scan the other night and got the results back. He’s just got changes in his fetlocks. It’s just not going to happen this year unfortunately, but we’ve still got a horse. He’ll have a good spell and come back bigger and better.” Deakin finished eighth in last week’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), beaten only 3.2 lengths after a solid run. Stokes expressed disappointment for the team and owners after months of planning. “I feel very sorry for the connections – there’s been a lot of work going into this from our stable staff,” he said. “But we’ll put the horse first, and he’ll reward us.” The setback means OTI will now be without a Melbourne Cup runner, but Stokes remains optimistic Deakin will return for another Cup tilt next year.

Maher banking on Bendigo Cup formula

Ciaron Maher is once again looking to the Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) as a crucial stepping stone towards Melbourne Cup success, hoping history can repeat itself when Interpretation (Galileo) and Sayedaty Sadaty (Anodin) line up in Wednesday’s $500,000 feature. Both horses remain on the borderline of the Melbourne Cup ballot, but victory in the 2400-metre event could propel either into the field, with the winner’s $300,000 likely enough to secure a start, even if they did not attract a weight penalty. The Bendigo Cup has been a valuable pathway for Maher in recent years: High Emocean (Ocean Park) saluted in 2022 before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup, while Interpretation won the Bendigo feature in 2023 before running sixth at Flemington. “It’s been a good race for us,” the trainer told Racing.com. “It gives those borderline horses one more chance to earn their way in, and it fits perfectly in the calendar.” Maher’s principal Cup contenders remain Royal Supremacy (Make Believe), The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) winner who ran fifth in the Caulfield Cup, and Middle Earth (Roaring Lion), who impressed with a third placing in Saturday’s JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m). The trainer said post-race that the addition of blinkers to Middle Earth’s gear had sharpened the gelding’s focus. “The blinkers have been positive and so will the two miles at Flemington,” he said. “His best runs have been there. He needed another run and made ground late…that’s what I wanted to see.”

Wilson hoping for change of luck with Clubhouse at Ipswich

Marcus Wilson is hoping the tide will finally turn for the consistent Clubhouse (Spieth) when he lines up over 1350 metres at Ipswich on Monday. The five-year-old has been plagued by awkward barriers and slowly-run races this campaign but continues to race well, finishing runner-up at Grafton and Murwillumbah at his past two starts. Wilson believes a stronger tempo and the return of experienced jockey Andrew Mallyon could help deliver a deserved win. “He’s been a victim of bad barriers,” the trainer said. “You could make a strong case he should have won two of his last four. He went down by a short margin last start but he’s racing well, and Andrew knows him well. He’s not the easiest horse to ride – he can overrace – but Andrew has soft hands and gets on well with him.” The scratching of early favourite Sanctuary Storm (Pierro) sees Clubhouse move in one gate to barrier seven, but Wilson concedes it remains a tricky draw. “It makes it tougher to try and slot in, but we’ll hope to save something for the finish,” he said. “Andrew is a big leg-up and hopefully he has him travelling well and coming home.” Wilson, who trains around 30 horses from his Gold Coast base, said Clubhouse has been “ticking over beautifully” and should appreciate Ipswich’s layout. “It’s not the biggest track, it’s not the smallest either, but it’s a momentum track and hopefully he gets that to suit him,” he said.

Mr Brightside among Lindsay Park’s Perth nominations

Mr Brightside (Bullbars) could be Perth-bound later this year, with the Lindsay Park team of Ben, Will and JD Hayes entering the star for the $1.5 million The Gold Rush (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot on December 13. Ben Hayes said the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on November 8 remains the immediate target, with a possible back-up in the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) the following week, but no decision would be made on a westward trip until after those runs. “We’ve put him in the noms for Perth, but there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge,” Hayes said. “He needs to run well in the Champions Mile, and while there’s the option of backing him up in the Orr, we’ve never done that before.” Hayes said the shifting of the Orr to the end of the spring carnival had reduced Mr Brightside’s autumn options, prompting consideration of Perth to keep him ticking over ahead of the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). “If we do go to Perth, it’s a great way to maintain his fitness and hit the Futurity really fit,” he said.

Hi Yo Sass Bomb strikes again in Thompson Handicap

Hi Yo Sass Bomb (Credit: Race Images)

Kim Reid’s decision to sidestep a Group 1 proved spot on when Hi Yo Sass Bomb (7 m Complacent – Hi Yo Soo by Spartacus) dominated from the front to win Sunday’s Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham. The reliable mare resumed her spring campaign with a bang earlier this month, claiming the Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Hawera, and backed that up with another polished performance under Chris Dell. Reid had originally pencilled in last weekend’s Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Ellerslie, where Hi Yo Sass Bomb ran second to Snazzytavi (Tavistock) last year, but opted instead for the Trentham feature. Dell took advantage of a clean break to control proceedings throughout, dictating steady mid-race sectionals before kicking clear at the top of the straight. Hi Yo Sass Bomb proved too tough in the run home, holding off The Scunner (Shamexpress) by 2.5 lengths, with Trosettee (Jimmy Choux) another 2.3 lengths behind in third. “I was thinking, ‘crikey, Chris is going to the front,’ but she was super,” Reid said. “She was really calm today – that’s when she’s at her best – and it was a great ride.” Hi Yo Sas Bomb has now won seven races and over $450,000 in prize-money. Reid is eyeing a return to Trentham for the Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) on December 6.

Gerard eyes Guineas repeat with emerging Te Rapa duo

Pam Gerard is hoping history can repeat itself when she saddles up Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) and Romanoff (Belardo) in Monday’s James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa – a race that proved the launchpad for Savaglee’s (Savabeel) Group 1 triumph in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last year. Gerard guided Savaglee through a stellar 2024 spring which culminated in Guineas glory at Riccarton, and she’s plotting a similar course with Affirmative Action, who burst into Guineas contention with his shock win in the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m). Despite a 51-day gap between runs caused by wet weather and track issues, Gerard is confident the $8 Guineas chance is forward enough to perform strongly. “He’s done some nice work at home and had an exhibition gallop last weekend, so he’s as fit as we can get him without another race,” the trainer said. “He’s a big, strong horse who relaxes well, and the 1400 metres will really suit him.” Stablemate Romanoff also lines up after an encouraging third at Rotorua earlier this month. The gelding is showing renewed focus after a promising but wayward two-year-old campaign. “He’s got talent and seems to have come back the right way,” Gerard said. George Rooke retains the ride on Affirmative Action, with Vinnie Colgan aboard Romanoff.

Fresh Ima Brazen One defies chute record

Ima Brazen One (Credit: Race Images)

Mike Breslin enjoyed a banner day at Trentham on Sunday, landing both feature sprints on the card with Ima Brazen One (Brazen Beau) and Kosta (War Decree). After struggling to master Trentham’s tricky 1200-metre chute in previous attempts, Ima Brazen One turned the tables in emphatic fashion, leading throughout under Masa Hashizume to win an open handicap over 1000 metres. The mare showed her trademark speed to cross and dictate before giving a strong kick in the straight, holding off fast-finishing rival Lhasa (Hellbent) by 0.3 lengths. “I knew she was ready to run a big race, she was probably as forward as I’ve had her to resume,” Breslin said. “She still didn’t handle the junction that well, but once Masa got her back to the rail, she found her rhythm. I don’t think the chute or a straight-six like Riccarton is really her go, so we’ll probably head to Ellerslie before Christmas and see if she’s up to something like the Concorde.” Bred by Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, Ima Brazen One was a $100,000 Karaka purchase and has now earned over $118,000 in prize-money for the In To Win Brazenly Syndicate. Earlier on the card, Kosta produced a dazzling late burst to win the Rating 65 (1000m) under Samantha Collett, nabbing favourite Toronto (Vancouver) on the line. “He’s always been an athlete – the head just hadn’t caught up,” Breslin said. “He’s learning to relax now, and that turn of foot will be a big weapon. Long term, I think he’s a 2000-metre horse.”

Guineas on the radar for classy filly Cream Tart

Tony Pike faces a tantalising decision with emerging filly Cream Tart (Hello Youmzain), who is on target for a Group 1 assignment at Riccarton after a polished victory over 1400 metres at Trentham on Sunday. The filly showed her potential as a juvenile in June and confirmed she’s taken the next step with a commanding performance under Craig Grylls, sitting on the pace before kicking clear for a 1.3-length win over Belzoni (Belardo), with Intention (Bivouac) another 0.8 lengths away in third. “She’s a very talented filly, still a bit light-framed, but she’s come up really well,” Pike said. “This was a nice race to use as a lead-up, and she did it comfortably despite still doing a few things wrong.” The trainer will now decide whether Cream Tart heads to the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas on the first day of Cup Week, or tackles the colts in the 2,000 Guineas a week later. “I’ll make a decision in the next week or so,” Pike said. “The boys might not look quite as strong as the fillies at this stage, so there’s a chance she could go there. Either way, the mile will suit her – she’s bred to get beyond that.” Following her Trentham win, Cream Tart firmed into $10 for the 1,000 Guineas, where Well Written (Written Tycoon) remains the $2.80 favourite.

Asia

81 for Written Tycoon

Yulong’s stalwart stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia) chalked up his 81st individual stakes winner and second in Hong Kong when the David Hayes-trained Tomodachi Kokoroe (7 g ex Rainbeam by Fastnet Rock) won Sunday’s Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin in stylish fashion. Ridden by Harry Bentley, the gelding defeated Raging Blizzard (Per Incanto) by a length and a quarter, recording the second fastest 1200-metre time in Hong Kong history. Packing Hermod (Rubick) was a further three-quarters of a length away in third. Bred by Hilldene Farm, Tomodachi Kokoroe was bought by UHC at Magic Millions as a yearling in 2019. He then fetched $25,000 on an Inglis Digital Sale in 2022. The gelding is out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Rainbeam and hails from the same family as Scintillation (Danehill), a multiple stakes winner in Hong Kong. Written Tycoon is standing the current season for a private fee.

Eight for Duramente

Late Shadai Stallion Station sire Duramente (King Kamehameha) registered his eighth individual Grade 1 winner when Silk Racing colt Energico (3 c ex Enora by Noverre) relished the step up to 3000 metres and landed the Kikuka Sho (Gr 1, 3000m) at Kyoto on Sunday at his fifth start. Winner of his first four starts, including the Tokyo Hai Aoba Sho (Gr 2, 2400m), Energico was last seen finishing runner-up in the Niigata Kinen (Gr 3, 2000m) in August after missing the Japanese Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). On Sunday, the promising Mizuki Takayanagi-trained three-year-old proved two lengths too good for last-start Grade 2 winner Eri King (Kizuna), with Excite Bio (Rey De Oro) another three quarters of a length back in third. Bred by Northern Farm, Energico is one of seven winners out of Preis der Diana (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Enora (Noverre), also among them German Group 3 winner Erasmus (Reliable Man).

International

Six for Gleneagles

Arrow Eagle (4 c ex Absolutely Me by Anabaa Blue) provided Coolmore Stud-based stallion Gleneagles (Galileo) with his sixth Group 1 winner when he landed Sunday’s Prix Royal-Oak (Gr 1, 3100m) at Saint-Cloud. Last seen running sixth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), the four-year-old colt defeated Queenstown (Galileo) by two lengths. The OTI Racing-owned Sevenna’s Knight (Camelot) finished a further short-head away in third. Arrow Eagle is out of Absolutely Me (Anabaa Blue), making him a half-brother to multiple-Group 1-winning champion Ace Impact (Cracksman).

13 for Camelot

The progressive Pierre Bonnard (2 c ex Sultanina by New Approach) became Coolmore stallion Camelot’s (Montjeu) 13th individual elite-level winner when landed Sunday’s Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m). Lining up off the back of his impressive win in Newmarket’s Zetland Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f), the Aidan O’Brien-trained youngster beat A Boy Named Susie (Starspangledbanner) by two lengths with Proof (Dubawi) a neck further behind in third. Bred by Rathasker Stud, Pierre Bonnard was bought by Camas Park Stud for €80,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale in 2023 before MV Magnier went to €280,000 to land him at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale the following year. He is the seventh foal out of the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) winner Sultanina (New Approach) making him a half-brother to two winners, including the Group 2-placed winner Crepe Suzette (Saxon Warrior). Camelot stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore’s Irish base for a fee of €75,000 (approx. AU$134,070).

Third for Lucky Vega

Yulong’s dual-hemisphere stallion Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) scored his third individual stakes winner and second in as many days courtesy of Only Luck’s (2 f ex Love Street by Kitten’s Joy) victory in Sunday’s Wittekindshof Stud - Youngster Fillies’ Cup (Listed, 1400m) at Hanover. Trained in Poland by Krzysztof Ziemianski, the filly defeated Fast Angel (Anodin) by a neck and the front pair pulled nine lengths clear of the third-placed Burguesinha (Mehmas). Only Luck was a €55,000 buy for JRSA at the Goffs Ireland November Foal Sale in 2023, before being picked up by Millennium Stud for €50,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale the following year. The filly is out of the winning mare Love Street (Kitten’s Joy), who is a half-sister to US Grade 3 winner Bold Union (Dixie Union), with the pair being out of another US Grade 3 scorer in Bold World (Fortunate Prospect). Lucky Vega stands at the Irish National Stud during his time in the northern hemisphere and he is currently covering mares at an increased fee of $38,500 (inc GST) at Yulong’s Victorian base.

Six for Waldgeist

Light The Ghost (3 f ex Light The Stars by Sea The Stars) built on her promising effort in a Listed contest earlier in the month when she took out Sunday’s Prix de Flore (Gr 3, 2100m) at Saint-Cloud and in the process became the sixth individual stakes winner for her sire Waldgeist (Galileo). Trained by Josephine Soudan, the filly was winning for the third time in eight starts as she beat Ginalyah (Chaknak) by a length and a quarter with Zia Agnese (Romanised) a further length away in third. Light The Ghost is out of the Group-placed winner Light The Stars (Sea The Stars) making her a half sister to Light Angel (Dark Angel), a stakes-performed winner for John Gosden. Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Waldgeist stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Gestut Lunzen in Germany for a fee of €6,000 (approx. AU$10,725)

FR: Second successive Group 1 score for Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico (2 c Wootton Bassett - April Showers by Galileo) followed up his impressive win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) at Longchamp on Arc day at the beginning of the month with another equally impressive victory in Sunday’s Criterium International (Gr 1, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt comfortably accounted for his six rivals, beating Campacite (Zarak) by a length and three-quarters. Cape Orator (Mohaather) finished a further head behind in third. Puerto Rico is one of ten Group 1-winning juveniles by Wootton Bassett and that cohort also includes Hawk Mountain, winner of Saturday’s Futurity Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) at Doncaster. Wootton Bassett died while on shuttle duty at Coolmore Australia earlier in the month after contracting pneumonia following complications with choke.

FR: La Isla Mujeres pockets first Group win

The Paddy Twomey-trained La Isla Mujeres (5 m Lope De Vega - Honor Bound by Authorized) added a first Group win to her record when she proved far too good for her seven rivals in Sunday’s Prix Belle De Nuit (Gr 3, 2800m) at Saint-Cloud. The second of the mare’s two Listed wins came on her previous start at Galway and she took the leap into better company in her stride, scooting away stylishly to beat Kiamba (Australia) by a decisive five and a half lengths. Calamandra (New Bay) filled the placings, finishing a further length and a half away. Bred by A R L Al Shahania Stud France, La Isla Mujeres was bought by Alex Elliott on behalf of Valmont for €105,000 at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2021, before being picked up by Jason Kelly and her trainer for 330,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2023 and she now sports Moyglare Stud Farm silks.

34 for Zarak

Kairos (2 c ex Kosmische by Fastnet Rock) provided Zarak (Dubawi) with his 34th individual stakes winner when he stretched his unbeaten record to two with a victory in the Alson - Youngster Steher Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Hanover on Sunday. Trained by Henk Grewe, the colt followed up last month’s debut win at Cologne as he beat Abachi (Japan) by a half-length. There was a gap of 20 lengths back to Abdulhamid (Camelot) in third. Kairos is one of three winners out of the Listed scorer Kosmische (Fastnet Rock) who herself is out of Kushnarenkovo (Sadler’s Wells), a winning sister to, among others, English St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) scorer Brian Boru. Zarak stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Bonneval for €80,000 (approx. AU$143,000)

US: Test Score delivers for Amerman Racing in Twilight Derby

Graham Motion celebrated his first Twilight Derby (Gr 2, 9f) win at Santa Anita on Saturday when Test Score (3 c Lookin At Lucky – Joy Of Learning by Kitten’s Joy) justified heavy favouritism to claim a length and a quarter victory – his third Graded success. The only interstate runner in the five-runner field, Test Score sat fourth early for Juan Hernandez as Septembersixtyfour (Omaha Beach) dictated the tempo. Swinging wide into the straight, Hernandez let the colt stride and he quickly reeled in the leaders to defeat Maaz (Galiway) and Namaron (Amaron), who filled the placings. “All the credit goes to my horse,” Hernandez said. “He broke well, travelled kindly and was just happy to be there. When I asked him to go, he just went away with it.” Motion’s assistant Alice Clapham said the addition of blinkers had been key. “Juan said he settled really nicely with the blinkers, and when he was asked, he just picked up,” she said. The colt was bred by owners John and Jerry Amerman, who also bred his dam Joy Of Learning (Kitten’s Joy) and granddam Miss Chapin (Royal Academy) having owned the third dam Society Dream (Akarad), winner of the 1998 Ack’s Secret Stakes (Listed, 10f) at Santa Anita.

US: Ortiz seals Keeneland title as Hit Show delivers in Fayette Stakes

A month after announcing his surprise move from New York to Kentucky, Irad Ortiz Jr. capped off his relocation in perfect style on Saturday, clinching the Keeneland Fall riding title with victory aboard Hit Show (5 h Candy Ride – Actress by Tapit) in the Fayette Stakes (Gr 3, 9f). The Brad Cox-trained five-year-old extended his perfect three-for-three record at Keeneland, adding to a resume that includes victory in this year’s $12 million Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 10f). Racing just off the speed through early fractions, Ortiz angled his mount into the clear at the top of the straight and he ran out the length winner over Rattle N Roll (Connect), with Gosger (Nyquist) a neck further away in third. “You never know how it’s going to play out,” Ortiz said of his move. “Every time I come here people support me…I thank God for this title, I’m just happy and ready to keep working.”

US: Troubleshooting digs deep to land Bryan Station Stakes

Donamire Farm’s homebred Troubleshooting (3 c Not This Time – Into Trouble by Into Mischief) confirmed his class once again on Saturday’s closing day of Keeneland’s Fall Meet, holding off a late surge from Tenacious Leader (Not This Time) to capture Bryan Station Stakes (Gr 3, 8f). Ridden confidently by Tyler Gaffalione for Greg Foley, the colt took over on the final turn and kept on gamely to score by a neck. Giocoso (Not This Time) was another length and a half behind in third. Taylor Made Farm stallion Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) sired the first four across the line. It was another strong performance for the winner, who also took the $2 million Ainsworth-Franklin Simpson (Gr 1, 6.5f) at Kentucky Downs last month. Foley praised the colt’s professionalism and consistency, noting he’s continued to mature with each start. “Let’s put it this way: I’m glad the Breeders’ Cup is here next year,” he said. “We just were talking about it before today, even just that he would take us, and if he’s doing well, maybe we could have a shot at it next year. He just gets better all the time. He’s a big, gorgeous horse.”

Tomodachi Kokoroe’s remarkable renaissance continues with scintillating Premier Bowl win

Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon) sensationally catapulted himself into Hong Kong International Races reckoning after running the second-fastest 1200 metres time in Hong Kong racing history to scoop the Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday (26 October).

The only horse to ever run 1200 metres faster in Hong Kong is Tomodachi Kokoroe’s stablemate Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), the world’s top-rated sprinter.

The win came courtesy of a perfectly judged ride from Harry Bentley, who has now won three of four rides with the galloper. The Englishman settled the gelding perfectly, one off the rail behind the speed, and produced him at the 300-metre pole before flashing home past a group of early pace-setters. It was a ride that didn’t escape the attention of delighted trainer David Hayes.

“Sometimes you paint a race map that you pray your horse will get, and Harry [Bentley] put him in that spot,” Hayes said.

“Harry wasn’t happy with the run he gave him last time, but was shocked by how he fought and held on. And then when he gave him a good run, like first up, he’s killed it. That was a ten-out-of-ten ride.”

The win marks the continuation of an incredible late-career renaissance for the seven-year-old, who didn’t register a single win in ten Class 2 outings last season.

Hayes is now in the enviable position of having two world-class sprinters in his yard, who may well provide the stiffest opposition for each other at the December showpiece.

“He runs time, so you can’t ignore that,” said the Australian Hall of Fame trainer. “If he gets a good run in a big race, he’ll run well.

“He’ll probably run in the traditional (HKIR) lead-up race – the trial [the Group Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint, 1200m], he’ll run on that day. And whether he runs against Ka Ying [Rising], we’ll see how Ka Ying does when he gets out of quarantine.”

Raging Blizzard (Per Incantor) ran on well for a hard-earned runner-up cheque under Brenton Avdulla. Packing Hermod (Rubick) finished third with Zac Purton.

Meanwhile, Pierre Ng soared back to form with an unlikely double completed by his high-profile debutant Sagacious Life (Put It Back), who claimed a shock win in the Class 2 Panasonic Cup Handicap (1600m). Ridden by seven-pound claiming apprentice Britney Wong, the Brazilian import flashed home in a blistering 22.66s last-200m split to pip Steps Ahead (Written By) to the Cup at 32/1.

The four-year-old, who claimed the Derby Paulista (Gr 1, 2400m) by over four lengths in his last act before departing for Hong Kong, will now be aimed at the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which gets underway on 1 February with the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m).

David Hayes (Credit: HKJC)

“It’s a long way to come,” Ng said. “He trialled well over 1000 metres and 1200 metres and in a mile trial in Conghua, he was superb. Today we were looking for prize-money and he actually won.

“We have [the BMW Hong Kong Derby, 2000m] in the back of our minds. Now he’ll get some points, that will be his target.”

In addition to the HK$1.74 million first place cheque, Sagacious Life’s connections net a PP Bonus worth HK$3 million for the galloper’s first win in Class 2 with a rating of 80 or higher.

Ng had earlier recorded an overdue second win of the season when he took out the card-opening Class 5 Panasonic Air-Conditioner Handicap (1800m) with On The Lash (Savabeel). Luke Ferraris maintained his excellent early-season form with victory on the five-year-old.

On a banner day for debutants, unraced three-year-old Ever Luck (Capitalist) lived up to the hype that followed a commanding recent barrier trial performance to score on his maiden start under James Orman in the Class 4 Panasonic TV Handicap (1200m).

The win continued a record of winners at 12 successive meetings for trainer Mark Newnham, who sits four wins clear of Caspar Fownes at the trainers’ championship summit. But the win wasn’t without its controversy. The inexperienced gelding had to overcome drifting extremely wide off the bend – and into the running of Zac Purton on the eventual second Georgian Sigma (Shalaa). Following a lengthy stewards’ inquiry, Ever Luck was awarded an impressive maiden win.

Sagacious Life (Credit: HKJC)

Australian import Alpha Strike (I Am Immortal) won at his first attempt in Hong Kong when the four-year-old Fownes trainee claimed the Class 3 Technics Headphones Handicap (1000m) under Vincent Ho.

Orman sealed his second win of the meeting in the Class 4 Panasonic Rice Cooker Handicap (1400m), charging through in a tight finish to claim his fourth winner of the season on board Bright Day (Starcraft) and a ninth for handler Manfred Man.

There was a surprise winner of the Class 4 Panasonic Smart Lock Handicap (1600m) when Time To Fire (Time Test) – saddled by David Hall and on a seven-day back-up – burst through late under Matthew Poon to salute at odds of 67/1.

Jamie Richards scored for the first time in four meetings when Goldentronicmighty (Harry Angel) held on to take a competitive Class 4 Panashop Handicap (1200m) under Keith Yeung.

Dylan Mo grabbed his second win of the season when he saluted on talented long-term ally Winning Wing (Preferment) for Francis Lui in the Class 3 Panasonic Vitalift Handicap (2000m).

Zac Purton registered – for the ninth successive meeting – when he took the card-closing Class 3 Panasonic Washer Dryer Handicap (1400m) aboard Top Dragon (Pierata) for Chris So.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin this Thursday (30 October).
