Blueblood colts primed to extend Godolphin’s purple patch

With Godolphin Australia currently riding the crest of a wave, managing director Andy Makiv is hopeful a trio of blueblood colts can ensure another red-letter day for the racing and breeding behemoth when the curtain is raised on the acclaimed Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington this coming Saturday.

Buoyed by Godolphin’s triple stakes success last weekend and by the seamless transition to a public training model in the wake of James Cummings’ impending departure to Hong Kong, Makiv and his right-hand man Jason Walsh are determined to maintain their team’s momentum heading into one of the biggest days on the Australian racing calendar.

What's On

Ever the traditionalist, Makiv will adhere to the black-and-white dress code on Derby Day but out on Flemington’s pristine pastures, Godolphin’s royal blue silks are likely to feature prominently with Observer (Ghaiyyath) currently the short-priced favourite for the three-year-old staying classic, while Beiwacht (Bivouac) and Tentyris (Street Boss) are the two market leaders for the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

With the ever-present need for speed pervading the Australian breeding industry, victory for either colt in the Coolmore would guarantee their place on Darley’s stallion roster alongside their famous fathers and other titans of the turf.

Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winners, in contrast, are perhaps less in demand in the breeding barn; but putting the purely commercial aspect to one side, Makiv would derive just as much personal pleasure should Observer register a first Group 1 win for his sire – especially as he played a role in the decision to bring Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) out to Darley’s Northwood Park.

Observer would arguably already have made his top-tier breakthrough with a more favourable run in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), but the colt went some way towards banishing that disappointment when he toyed with his rivals in the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) on Saturday.

The half-length margin of defeat certainly flattered his opponents – Mark Zahra departed the racecourse $1,500 worse off after being fined for easing his mount down a long way from home – but the in-form jockey was probably content to cop the hit to his pocket if it preserved some of Observer’s energy for Saturday’s test of stamina.

According to Makiv, the seven-day back-up should pose no problems – particularly in light of Ciaron Maher’s mastery with staying horses – and provided he comes through Wednesday’s barrier draw unscathed, Observer would appear to have a clear class edge on the field.

“We’ve long hoped that he was our Derby horse and he’s shown every sign that he would be, so we head into the big race with a great deal of confidence,” said Makiv, who also gave a good push for Team McEvoy’s Derby contender Options (Impending).

“Observer is a very nice horse and we’ve always held him in high regard, so it was really satisfying to see him get his first stakes win on Saturday. Mark [Zahra] was obviously aware of the fact he would be backing up in the Derby seven days later, so he looked after him late. He came through the run particularly well and he’s a big robust colt, so we think he will handle the quick back-up no issue.

“He’s by a dominant staying horse in Ghaiyyath, so we have every confidence that he will run out the trip. To have a live chance in the Derby was the reason we brought Ghaiyyath out here in the first place. We wanted to have more runners in the Derby and the Oaks because we didn’t feel we were competing as well in those races as we would’ve liked. He was a world-class stayer so we were keen to use him extensively in Australia.

“It would be a significant moment for the team there who stood Ghaiyyath if this horse could become his sire’s first Group 1 winner. These good racehorses aren’t an overnight success, they’re sometimes five or six years in the making depending on the female line, so lots of people working for Godolphin Australia have their fingerprints on this colt.

“To head into one of the biggest days on the calendar with the favourite for the Derby and the Coolmore is testament to all their hard work and planning. We’re now just nervously waiting and hoping one or two of them can deliver on the day.”

Bivouac was terrific down the Flemington straight, his two wins in the Newmarket and the Darley Sprint were just phenomenal. So if he’s passed that ability onto Beiwacht, look out on Saturday

Andy Makiv

A glance at the roll call of winning trainers should help ease any nerves ahead of the Coolmore, with the name of Chris Waller – who prepares Beiwacht – adorning the trophy on no fewer than six occasions.

Given that he broke the track record en route to winning the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) with a display of sustained speed, in the process delivering a first Group 1 win for his sire Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), Beiwacht was afforded a brief freshen-up before Waller began the meticulous planning for which he is renowned.

After expending some energy in a trial at Rosehill, the colt was sent south to Waller’s satellite stables at Flemington and after settling into his new surroundings, he embarked on an exploratory expedition down the straight late last week.

If Beiwacht has inherited any of his father’s straight track prowess, expect his first foray to Melbourne to cement his status as one of the most accomplished three-year-olds in the land.

“Chris was very pleased with Beiwacht’s hit-out at Flemington,” said Makiv.

“The Golden Rose feels like a long time ago now, but we immediately targeted the Coolmore after his dominant win in that race. His trainer has got a phenomenal record in the Coolmore, so we were only too happy to go with his recommendation. Chris didn’t want to give him another run before the race, so instead he trialled in Sydney then we brought him down to Melbourne and had a good look at the straight.

It's In The Blood: Beiwacht

It’s early days, but first–season Darley sire Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) has already made a piece of modern history.

“Bivouac was terrific down the Flemington straight, his two wins in the Newmarket and the Darley Sprint were just phenomenal. So if he’s passed that ability onto Beiwacht, look out on Saturday.”

Should the straight track bring Beiwacht undone, however, Tentyris could be the chief beneficiary as the dynamic last-start Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner aims to achieve a first in the Coolmore for both his sire Street Boss (Street Cry) and the training team of Anthony and Sam Freedman.

There certainly seems to be a sense of timing about Tentyris, who resumes his fruitful association with Zahra while Adam Hyeronimus will make the trip from Sydney to partner Beiwacht.

“Tentyris has got an extraordinary turn of foot, which we first saw in the Blue Diamond when he just missed out,” Makiv told ANZ news.

“His win in the Todman was outstanding and we saw him explode in the Gothic Stakes, so he’s got all the credentials of being a Group 1 star in waiting. He’s got straight talk experience and he’s been prepared beautifully by the Freedmans, so if turns up on Saturday he will be right in the mix.

“We’ll have one colt right on speed in Beiwacht and then the other one will probably be out the back and finishing off strong late, so hopefully we’ve got all bases covered. Given its history of producing top class stallions, the Coolmore is obviously a very important race for us to target with our colts every year. It’s one of the main reasons why we elected to run Tempted in our slot in the Everest and take the two colts on a path to the Coolmore, because recent history tells you it’s very difficult to run a horse in both.”

Tentyris (Credit: Sportpix)

The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Tempted (Street Boss) – whose primary aim in the autumn is the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) – is currently enjoying a holiday in one of the lush paddocks at Darley’s spacious farm in the Hunter Valley, where she will shortly be joined by both Attica (Lonhro) and Ohope (I Am Invincible) following their heroics at Randwick last Saturday.

As the first foal produced by multiple stakes winner Savatiano (Street Cry), plenty was expected of Attica and the colt has delivered in spades in his first racing preparation, culminating in a 14th Group 1 success for his late sire in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

With trainer Joe Pride nominating the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) among a veritable feast of options for the colt in the autumn, he might even replace the award-winning Melbourne restaurant as the most famous Attica in the country.

“Jason [Walsh] has had a very high opinion of the colt right from the start,” said Makiv.

“He’d shown a fair bit of promise as a two-year-old, and we thought he would really suit a trainer like Joe Pride. From early on, he gave Joe the impression that he would enjoy getting out over a mile and further, his pedigree didn’t necessarily suggest that but his physical attributes certainly did. The Spring Champion was his target race from a long way out, and it was very satisfying to see that long-range plan come off.

“Hopefully he can be the next Ceolwulf in Joe’s stable. He’s on his way to the paddock, the way the calendar is now the Spring Champion is run much deeper into the spring, which makes it very difficult to bring the horse down to Melbourne for the Derby. I’m not convinced he would get the Derby trip in any case, because I think 2000 metres probably sees him out. So it was a pretty easy decision to spell him now and get him ready for the autumn.

“He’s impeccably bred from a great family, so if he could add a race like the Randwick Guineas to his resumé then he would surely make his way onto Darley’s stallion roster. That’s our business model, trying to win Group 1 races with well-bred colts is what we’re about so it was a very important day for him and for the whole operation.”

Morning Briefing

Snowden confident Beadman ready to shine in Coolmore

A bit of rain won’t worry Peter Snowden as he readies exciting colt Beadman (Snitzel) for Saturday’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, the race earmarked as his spring grand final. The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) is one of 15 nominations for the $2 million three-year-old sprint and had his first look down the famous straight in a jump-out last Friday, finishing second behind Balastier (Brazen Beau) and beating Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Beiwacht (Bivouac) into third. Snowden said the outing was purely educational. “He seemed focused and jumped out nicely,” Snowden said. “We weren’t worried about the result; we just wanted him to have a look around. He worked strongly to the line over the last 300 metres and got a tick from me.” A winner of the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at the Gold Coast in May – where he bolted in by 8.3 lengths on heavy ground – Beadman has been purposefully aimed at the Coolmore since that performance. After a winter break, he returned with two strong Sydney runs on firm tracks, finishing third to Marhoona (Snitzel) first-up before chasing home Hidden Motive (Capitalist) in the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). “He’s a smart horse,” Snowden said. “Everything he’s done, he’s done easily. He’s still raw and learning his craft, but he’s very talented. Nothing about the straight worried him, and it’s always good for them to see it before raceday.” Beadman arrived in Melbourne last week and has settled in well at Snowden’s Flemington base. Blake Shinn, who partnered him in the jump-out, retains the ride.

Ryan confident in Derby duo

A year after saddling Red Aces (Dundeel) to a brave sixth in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), trainer Nick Ryan is back for another tilt with a pair he believes are even better equipped for the Flemington classic. Ryan will send out Highvol (Microphone) and Miewa (Maurice) in Saturday’s Group 1, and while the 2025 edition shapes as a stronger contest, confidence in his three-year-olds is high. “They’re far better horses,” Ryan told Racing.com. “In saying that, it’s a far stronger Derby too. We’re excited, we can’t wait for Saturday.” Highvol burst onto the scene with two impressive Flemington wins as a juvenile and looks to be peaking again after a narrow second in last week’s Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m). “He did everything bar win at Geelong and still did a bit wrong,” Ryan said. “He’s going to take improvement from that, and we might tinker with him a little this week.” Stablemate Miewa has built a near-perfect Derby preparation, finishing runner-up in both the Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) and the Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) at his past two outings. “Touch wood, there’s a little bit of water to go under the bridge, but he’s had the perfect prep,” Ryan said. “He’s peaking at the right time and we’re really happy with him. He worked really well in his final gallop — he’s right where I want him.” Asked to split the pair, Ryan said their contrasting racing styles could both be effective at Flemington. “Highvol can put himself into the race, and Miewa’s got an electric turn of foot if everything goes well,” he said. “At 2500 metres at Flemington, it’s a different kettle of fish, anything can happen.”

Palmer hoping Seagulls Eleven can soar in Golden Eagle

British trainer Hugo Palmer believes Group 3 winner Seagulls Eleven (Galileo Gold) will be highly competitive in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick. “We had to feel we had a chance of being in the money,” Palmer told Racing NSW. “He’s rated the same as [last year’s winner] Lake Forest was when he came down. We’ve come to Australia every time we’ve had the horse to bring us.” The Newmarket-based trainer’s only previous Australian runners came during the 2017 spring, when Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs) ran second in the Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) before contesting the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), and Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor) ran fourth in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). Group 1-placed as a juvenile, Seagulls Eleven ran sixth in the Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Royal Ascot in June, second in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Newmarket, and then landed the Thoroughbred Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Goodwood in August. While he finished eighth last start in the City Of York Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), Palmer said circumstances were against him. “The inside was the place to be early in the week, but by Saturday that ground was gone,” he said. “York is sharp and flat, but Randwick’s 1500 metres will suit him perfectly.” Palmer said he was encouraged to make the trip by Tom Marquand, who takes the ride on Saturday, and added that Seagulls Eleven has thrived in quarantine at Canterbury. “He’s barely lost a kilo and has just thrived since he’s been there,” he said. “Tom’s a great fit. He knows the horse, he knows Australia, and he actually encouraged me to come. He said Randwick would really suit him better than Rosehill.”

Baker chasing more spring riches with Golden Eagle duo

Fresh from celebrating triumph in The Invitation with Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard), trainer Bjorn Baker is eyeing another major payday as he looks to saddle Mayfair (Fastnet Rock) and potentially Perfumist (El Roca) in this weekend’s $10 million Golden Eagle at Randwick. It’s been a carnival of near-misses for Baker, with Overpass (Vancouver), Pericles (Street Boss), Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert), and Mayfair all performing well without victory until Stefi Magnetica broke through. The Warwick Farm horseman is hoping that success marks a turning point. “It’s been a bit of a frustrating run, so it was great to see Stefi Magnetica get the job done,” Baker said. “Hopefully that’s the start of things turning around heading into next weekend.” Formerly trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Mayfair made a strong debut for Baker when finishing third in the Silver Eagle (1300m), earning a guaranteed berth in the Golden Eagle field. “He was a very astute online purchase by Darby Racing, I think around the $200,000 mark,” Baker said. “He’s already guaranteed a spot in the field, and Dylan Gibbons will ride.” Stablemate Perfumist remains on the borderline, sitting equal 41st on the ballot, but Baker is hopeful attrition will see her sneak into the field. “She’s ready to go: it just depends on whether a few above us drop out,” he said. “There are some that ran yesterday who might not back up. Rachel King will ride if she gets a run.”

Revelare ruled out of Melbourne Cup after setback

Another golden ticket holder has dropped out of the Melbourne Cup, with trainer Rob Hickmott confirming on Monday that Revelare (So You Think) will head to the paddock following a minor setback. The Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m) winner secured his automatic Cup berth in September but failed to fire in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), finishing near the tail. Hickmott said the decision to spell the five-year-old was made in the horse’s long-term interests. “It’s disappointing for the team and connections as the Melbourne Cup is always a race we love to be part of,” Hickmott told Racing.com. “However, after consulting with our veterinary team and considering Revelare’s best interests, we believe sitting out this year’s Cup is the right call. The priority is always the health and longevity of our horses. Revelare will be given time to recuperate from a minor setback and focus on future targets.” The withdrawal came ahead of Monday morning’s third declarations for the Cup and followed the earlier withdrawals of fellow golden ticket winners Deakin (Australia) and Basilinna (Staphanos).

Melbourne Cup field tightens at third declaration stage

The race for the final places in next week’s $10 million Melbourne Cup is heating up, with 40 horses remaining after third declarations closed on Monday. Eight horses dropped out at the third stage, following 48 paid-up entries at the previous declaration two weeks ago. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), which looms as a key form race for several Cup hopefuls still looking to secure their spot in the 24-horse field. While the Bendigo feature doesn’t offer a golden ticket, victory – and any resulting penalty – could elevate contenders up the ballot order ahead of Saturday afternoon’s final declarations. Among those still in contention is Parchment Party (Constitution), who could make history as the first American-trained horse to run in the race. Seven-time Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams remains a major player with Changingoftheguard (Galileo) and Post Impressionist (Teofilo) still in the mix after stablemates Adelaide River (Australia), Point King (Zoffany), and Cleveland (Camelot) were withdrawn. The other horses to drop out at the latest stage were Brayden Star (Twilight Son), Gilded Water (Fastnet Rock), Revelare, Kings Valley (Territories), and Dashing Duchess (Tavistock).

Cup penalty for Onesmoothoperator after dominant Valley win

English stayer Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) has been handed a one-kilogram penalty for next week’s Melbourne Cup following his emphatic victory in last Friday night’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m). The Brian Ellison-trained seven-year-old will now carry 53 kilograms at Flemington, with Racing Victoria’s head of handicapping David Hegan confirming the re-handicap on Monday. “Onesmoothoperator was simply too good for his rivals on Friday night,” Hegan said. “Despite carrying the equal topweight of 57 kilograms, he blitzed his rivals late to win eased down in stunning fashion. The dynamic nature of his performance rated above his Geelong Cup win last year, when he was penalised 1 kilogram, and so he warrants a further re-handicap.” The stayer finished 12th in last year’s Melbourne Cup but appears to have returned in stronger form, with his Valley performance stamping him as a serious contender for this year’s race. In contrast, Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Torranzino (Tarzino), trained by Paul Preusker, escaped a penalty and will carry 51 kilograms in the Cup, keeping him among the lightweight chances for next Tuesday’s feature.

McDonald bullish about Meydaan ahead of Melbourne Cup

Fresh from his Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) triumph aboard Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), champion jockey James McDonald has thrown his support behind his Melbourne Cup mount Meydaan (Frankel), declaring the import “one of the hardest to beat” in next week’s $10 million feature. McDonald partnered the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained stayer for the first time at Werribee on Sunday morning and said the hit-out left him full of confidence. “I actually went and worked him at Werribee yesterday and he gave me a beautiful feel,” McDonald told Racing.com. “He’s a gorgeous horse to look at, is fit as a fiddle, and bounced out of that Caulfield Cup run with flying colours. I’m really looking forward to it, actually. I think he’s definitely going to be one of the hardest to beat. I think he’ll relish Flemington and the 3200 metres.” The 2021 Cup-winning rider, who scored that year with Verry Elleegant (Zed), said there was plenty to like about Meydaan’s lead-up effort in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), where he finished ninth under Andrea Atzeni after a wide run. “I thought his run in the Cup was pretty good,” McDonald said. “He didn’t look like he handled Caulfield at all.”

Pier Melbourne-bound after strong King Charles run

Group 1 winner Pier (Proisir) will continue his Australian campaign in Melbourne after his impressive third in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1609m) at Randwick. Trainers Darryn and Briar Weatherley confirmed the gelding will head to Champions Stakes Day at Flemington, with both the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) under consideration – though the longer trip is currently favoured. “We’ll probably nominate for both races and see what one looks more suitable,” Darryn Weatherley told Racing.com. “At this stage, I’m leaning toward the 2000 metres. Ethan Brown got off him after the King Charles and said he’s screaming out for it.” The son of Proisir (Choisir) has been a model of consistency since arriving in Australia in May, placing in the BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m), winning The Wayne Wilson (Listed, 1600m), and running well in Sydney features including the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) and Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). Weatherley said a calmer pre-race demeanour was key to Pier’s Randwick improvement. “He was a little hot under the tail in the Epsom and dislodged Ethan before the start,” he said. “But two weeks later, he was a different horse altogether, relaxed and paraded like a Group 1 performer. It was the best of the best [in the King Charles], and he wasn’t out of his league at all. He’s come through in great order and heads to Melbourne next Tuesday.”

First for Armory

Silhouette (Credit: Race Images)

Mapperley Stud’s first-season stallion Armory (Galileo) registered his first individual winner with his very first runner on Sunday as Silhouette produced a polished display to win dominantly at Trentham. Prepared by Cody Cole and ridden by Sam Collett, the two-year-old filly took control of the Fusion Electrical 2YO (900m) from the jump and never looked in danger, cruising to the line 4.3 lengths clear of Zaharias (Super Seth). Cole, who paid $120,000 for the filly at Book 1 of the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, said he had high expectations. “I wasn’t surprised by the performance,” he said. “She’s got a brilliant action and attitude. We took her to Trentham because she’s so tough and unfazed – she’s just a real trainable filly.” Cole said Silhouette would head to the paddock for a short break before returning to target early black-type options such as the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) in December. A tilt at the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) also remains possible. “She’s only going to keep improving,” he said. “Whatever she’s doing now, she’ll do even better in six months.” Silhouette is out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Fashion Sense, herself a granddaughter of Hong Kong Derby (2000m) heroine Elegant Fashion (Danewin). Mapperley Stud principal Simms Davison was delighted to see Armory make such an immediate impact. “That’s a fantastic start,” he said. “It’s not just that she won, it’s how she did it. Armory was tough and classy at every age, and Silhouette looks to have inherited that same professionalism.” Armory stands for $10,000 (plus GST) and has covered more than 100 mares in each of his first three seasons.

King Of Comedy notches first winner

Novara Park second-season sire King Of Comedy (Kingman) also registered his first individual winner on Sunday when his son Sir Ruby stormed to victory at Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia. Trained by Joseph Leck and ridden by Harmeet Singh Gill, Sir Ruby settled perfectly in the one-one position before unleashing a sharp turn of foot to run down the leader and score by 2.8 lengths over 1300 metres. Bred by Pencarrow Stud, the gelding is out of Darci Brahma (Danehill) mare Navy Beach, making him a half-brother to Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) winner Wolfgang (Puccini), who also won at Te Rapa on Monday to complete a memorable 24 hours for the family. Sir Ruby was initially passed in at $60,000 during Book 1 of the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale before being purchased later that year by Leck for the same price from Phoenix Park’s Ready To Run draft. Novara Park principal Luigi Muollo was thrilled to see the stallion’s first success. “He couldn’t have been more impressive — he won by three lengths and was powering away at the finish,” Muollo said. “He was a lovely type at the Ready To Run Sale and looked like a horse who’d handle a bit of distance.” Muollo said New Zealand’s lingering wet tracks have delayed the local debut wins for King Of Comedy’s progeny. “He was better on top of the ground, and his stock are the same,” he said. “Once the tracks firm up, they’ll really start to show their class.” King Of Comedy will be represented at the New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready To Run Sale by two well-credentialed lots, including a half-sister to stakes performer Nothing Compares (Jakkalberry) from Muollo’s own draft.

Kiwi pair remain in Cup contention

New Zealand’s staying ranks remain in the mix for this year’s $10 million Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), with both Mark Twain (Shocking) and Trav (Almanzor) among the 40 horses paid up at Monday’s third declaration stage. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained Mark Twain will have his final lead-up run in Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), where a strong showing could cement his spot in the Cup field. Currently 25th on the order of entry, the six-year-old gelding will need to perform up to his trainer’s high expectations. “On his wellbeing and his work, I’d be extremely disappointed if he didn’t run a bold race,” James said. “It’s no use just making up the numbers, but it’s a great race if you go into it in form.” Mark Twain earned a golden ticket into last year’s Cup with his win in the Roy Higgins Stakes (Listed, 2600m) before injury ruled him out. James remains confident the gelding can recapture that form. “When he won the Roy Higgins, he ran off at the first turn and still came from last – it was a phenomenal effort,” he said. Fellow Kiwi Trav, trained by Raymond Connors, is further down the list at 29th after finishing ninth in last Friday’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m). The Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) winner will need others to drop out in order to sneak into the field but remains a live chance. “Flemington is a different track and the distance suits,” Connors said.

Wolfgang back in NZ Cup frame after Te Rapa win

Plans for Wolfgang have shifted back across the Tasman, with the talented stayer emerging as a serious contender for next month’s New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) after a determined victory in Monday’s Waikato Cup Prelude (2400m) at Te Rapa. Originally aimed at the Melbourne Cup, the gelding’s Australian spring campaign was abandoned after three unplaced runs on firm tracks. Trainers Peter and Shaun McKay opted to regroup at home, and the decision quickly paid dividends. Ridden aggressively by Craig Grylls, Wolfgang dictated from the outset and looked to have the race sewn up on the turn. Though his rivals closed late, the six-year-old held on by 0.2 lengths from Quick Fire (Time Test) to register his ninth career win. “He struck hard tracks in Australia and just got a bit careful on his feet,” Shaun McKay said. “We brought him home and it’s great to see him back like that. Gryllsy rode him a masterpiece.” The win has revived New Zealand Cup ambitions, with McKay confirming connections are considering a late nomination for the Riccarton feature. “He’s undefeated over two miles, so it makes sense to look at it again,” he said. “He carried 61.5 kilos today and did it well, so top weight won’t bother him.”

Waikato Stud celebrates stellar weekend at home and abroad

It was a weekend to savour for Waikato Stud, with black-type success on both sides of the Tasman and a pair of maiden victories. At Moonee Valley, the Cliff Brown-trained Von Hauke (Savabeel) made amends for last year’s hard luck run to claim the Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) – the gelding’s fourth career win and another testament to the enduring partnership between Brown and the Chitticks. “Our relationship with Cliff started years back with Scaredee Cat,” said Mark Chittick. “He’s bought a few off us, including Von Hauke, and we’ll get another over to him shortly.” Out of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Tiara, Von Hauke was sold through Stonehouse Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $190,000. Meanwhile back home, Savabeel’s (Zabeel) influence continued with Sir Albert capturing the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m) at Cambridge for Terri Rae, moving his sire’s tally to 152 stakes winners. “Zabeel had 166 – we may not get there, but it’s incredible to even be close,” Chittick said. The stud also celebrated Belle Cheval’s (Savabeel) impressive maiden win for Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, earning her a share of fourth favouritism ($10) for the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Rounding out the weekend, Baywatch (Ocean Park) broke through at Sale – a bittersweet moment following the loss of her Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)-winning half-sister Never Been Kissed (Tivaci). “She was a nice pick-me-up after losing Never Been Kissed,” Chittick said.

12 for Ten Sovereigns

Former Coolmore stallion Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never) chalked up his 12th individual stakes winner when the Karl Burke-trained Half Sovereign (2 f ex Baileys Afterparty by Supplicant) made a successful raid in Monday’s Prix Miesque (Gr 3, 1400m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Pierre-Louis Jamin, the juvenile filly stayed on well inside the final furlong to beat Magny Cours (Awtaad) by a length and a quarter. There was a further three and a half lengths back to Baklawa (Stunning Spirit) in third. Bred by Haras Des Trois Chapelles, Half Sovereign was purchased by her trainer for 12,000gns at the 2024 Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale and is raced by Spratt Properties and Mrs E Burke. She is the first foal out of the winning Supplicant (Kyllachy) mare Baileys Afterparty. Ten Sovereigns stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Celikoglu Stud in Turkey.

313 for Dubawi

Darley’s breed-shaping sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) was provided with his 313th individual stakes winner on Monday when the Francis Graffard-trained Azimpour (3 c ex Azmiyna by Galileo) landed the Grand Prix du Nord (Listed, 2000m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona, the three-year-old colt stayed on well inside the closing stages to grab runner-up Swingeur (Sottsass) and score by a neck. There was a further half-length back to Familly (Goken) in third place. Bred and raced by The Aga Khan Studs, Azimpour is a half-brother to five winners including multiple Group 1 winner turned leading Arrowfield Stud stallion The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) and Listed scorer Azada (Siyouni) being out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Azmiyna, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Azamour (Night Shift). In winning Monday’s Listed race, Azimpour becomes the 26th stakes winner bred on the Dubawi / Galileo cross, a nick that is headed by three top-flight winners. Dubawi stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$712,530).

107 for Kingman

Juddmonte stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) chalked up his 107th individual stakes winner when Regal Resolve (2 c ex Wisdom Mind by Dark Angel) scored in Monday’s Prix Isonomy (Listed, 1800m) at Chantilly. Ridden by Colin Keane for trainer Francis Graffard, the juvenile colt proved a length and a half too strong for Space Waltz (American Pharoah) with a further head back to Arkansas (Sottsass) in third. Bred by Sun Bloodstock Sarl, Regal Resolve was originally purchased by Camas Park Stud for 260,000gns at the 2023 Tattersalls December Foal Sale before being resold to Juddmonte for 500,000gns at the following year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. He is the third foal out of the stakes-placed Dark Angel (Acclamation) mare Wisdom Mind. Kingman stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$254,420).

FR: Spycatcher lands Group 3 prize at Chantilly

The Karl Burke-trained Spycatcher (7 g Vadamos - Damask by Red Clubs) registered his fifth stakes success on Monday when landing the Prix de Seine-Et-Oise (Gr 3, 1200m) at Chantilly. Providing his trainer and jockey Pierre-Louis Jamin with a stakes-race double on the card, the seven-year-old gelding defeated Navassa Island (Territories) by four and a half lengths with a further length and three-quarters back to the third-placed Daylight (Earthlight).

UK: Rosallion and Inisherin confirmed for Darley's Dalham Hall in 2026

Group 1-winning pair Rosallion (Blue Point) and Inisherin (Blue Point) will both join Darley's Dalham Hall Stud for the 2026 season, with their fees set to be announced at a later date. It was announced last weekend that the top-class miler Rosallion had been retired, with trainer Richard Hannon describing the son of Blue Point (Shamardal) as "the horse of a lifetime and the best I've ever worked with". The four-year-old landed the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) at two and was runner-up in last year's English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) before winning both the Irish equivalent and the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m). Bred from Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's extraordinary Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem) family, Rosallion has finished runner-up in Group 1 company on three occasions this season. Inisherin, winner of Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) in 2024, happens to be closely related to Rosallion as a Sheikh Mohammed Obaid-bred grandson of blue hen Reem Three by Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), the sire of Blue Point, although they are out of different dams. Inisherin claimed further Group 2 victories in the Sandy Lane Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Haydock and this year's Duke Of York Stakes (Gr 2, 6f). Both prospective stallions bowed out on British Champions Day at Ascot.

Progressive Mukhtalif sells to Maher for 325,000gns

Mukhtalif will continue his career in Australia after being bought by Ciaron Maher for 325,000gns (Credit: Tattersalls)

Ciaron Maher’s head of bloodstock Will Bourne is on his annual visit to the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, and got the trip off to a productive start by landing the top lot at the opening session of the five-day Newmarket auction. The progressive middle-distance performer Mukhtalif (Sea The Stars) brought the gavel down at 325,000gns (approx. AU$694,060)

The Shadwell homebred has won his last two starts for William Haggas, with the most recent of those coming in a class two handicap at York. That performance saw the well-bred three-year-old hit a career-best Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 94.

Mukhtalif is the second foal out of Maqsad, a Listed-winning daughter of Siyouni (Pivotal) from the family of the Daniel Wildenstein’s Prix de Diane heroine Aquarelliste (Danehill). Not only does he boast a deep female family, but Bourne pointed to the success Mukhtalif’s sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) has enjoyed down under.

“He’s progressive and, having inspected the horse, you can see he’s a beautiful animal,” said Bourne after signing the ticket alongside Billy Jackson-Stops. “We really like the fact that the stallion works in Australia. David Hayes had the Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars and Johnny McKeever bought the Metropolitan winner Just Fine out of this sale, and they’re both by Sea The Stars too. This horse is a progressive stayer so he profiles perfectly for us and we’re happy to be taking him down there.”

Expanding on the six-figure valuation, Bourne said: “It really depends if you’re going toe-to-toe with another Australian, but I thought that was about his money. I thought he might’ve made a little more but there wasn’t a lot of Australian competition on him, which I thought there might be.”

Bourne also said that the all-conquering Maher stable had found sourcing European imports more of a challenge than in previous years, but that with continued success on the track in Australia, the team were determined to make the most of the Tattersalls buying mission.

“There’s a few more left in the catalogue,” he said. “When you look at Ciaron’s results in the last two months, Royal Supremacy won a Metropolitan and our runners in the Melbourne Cup this week are from Europe, so we’ve just got to keep sourcing these horses out of here.

“We have a number that we try to hit, but buying this year has been very hard. We’re probably ten horses down on where we’d like to be, that’s privately and through the sale ring. It’s been extremely difficult to buy the horses that you want at the right price, which hasn’t been helped by the Australian dollar. All these marginal factors, and more competition on tried horses, means it’s been really hard. That can affect our bloodstock portfolio so we’re keen to get a few here.”

Mukhtalif was the outfit’s second noteworthy signing on the day, having earlier gone to 150,000gns (approx. AU$320,300) for the useful Zain Blue. The four-year-old son of Blue Point (Shamardal) won three races for Newmarket handler John Butler, including striking in a 0-95 handicap at York last time out. That effort was given an RPR of 89.

“Johnny Butler was obviously touting him as a very nice horse and we liked his profile, his data has been very good,” said Jackson-Stops.

“We thought he could work over a mile-and-a-quarter down there, probably in Sydney where’ll get a bit of cut in the ground, and might end up looking like a horse who hopefully will look like he was very good value. We all know Johnny very well and he’s always been very positive about his ability and his soundness. He’s got the right sort of profile to keep on progressing down there.”

Zain Blue was making his second appearance at Tattersalls having been picked up by Butler for 170,000gns at Book 2 in 2022.

Mulcaster uncovers the Evidence

Maher was far from the only southern hemisphere stable stocking up on Monday, with Chris Waller’s long-serving talent scout Guy Mulcaster going to 200,000gns (approx. AU$427,110) for Bath novice winner Hard Evidence (Zarak).

The two-year-old son was purchased as a yearling by Alex Elliott, whose Imperium Sales draft consigned the youngster at Tattersalls. Hard Evidence was trained by Ed Walker for Anthony Ramsden’s Valmont operation.

Lot 166: Hard Evidence (Credit: Tattersalls)

“I think it helped that the commentator said he ‘powered away!’” said Mulcaster with typically dry humour. “The second horse had had one start at Ascot and the third had one start and had been third, so I think the form is pretty strong. He paraded really well here today, he looked beautiful in the back parade ring.

“We thought he had a lot more to come; he looks like he wants to be three and wants to be four, so we’ll take him along quietly and see where we end up. He’s a beautiful horse, though. I know Zaraks are better horses with a bit of time too. He was a €90,000 yearling and they’ve put him all through training, but they’ve got a little bit more back today. Everybody’s happy.”

Dwyer dips in again

Henry Dwyer has plundered a couple of major European prizes this summer, landing the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1200m) with his stable star Asfoora (Flying Artie). The Group 1-winning sprinter will soon be joined by the progressive sprinter Synners Kid (Ten Sovereigns) after Hurworth Bloodstock agent Sam Haggas landed a bid of 110,000gns (approx. AU$234,910) on Dwyer’s behalf.

The two-year-old, who was offered through Baroda Stud, has won both starts in nurseries for owner Ana O’Brien and her trainer brother Joseph, with his five-length stroll at Bellewstown last time out earning an RPR of 83.

“He was bought with Henry Dwyer,” said Haggas. “He came to the sale for the first time last year and we bought a couple. One of them, Cote Atlantique, won a Listed race at Seymour a couple of weeks ago, so Henry was keen to go again.

“The horse will end up with him in Australia, it’s just a question of whether he goes immediately or stays here into the summer. I don’t know if Asfoora will come back, there’s a chance she might, but there’s some nice meetings this horse can run in. He could target Royal Ascot as he’d qualify for a Britannia or maybe even a Golden Gates, but long-term his future will be in Australia.”

Haggas expanded on Synners Kid’s appeal, saying: “I was very impressed with him the last day. He showed a really nice turn of foot and essentially bolted up. It might’ve been a smallish nursery at a smallish track, but the manner in which he did it suggested he had plenty more to come. We hope he might improve for some better ground and he’s a progressive horse with a turn of foot. Hopefully he’s got plenty more to come.”

Darby put their faith in Coolmore offerings

Appeared (Justify), who was offered with a RPR of 85, and was consigned by Coolmore, was bought by Darby Racing and De Burgh Equine for 120,000gns (approx. AU$256,270).

The three-year-old son of Justify (Scat Daddy), out of Living The Life (Footstepsinthesand), a three-time Graded stakes winner in the US, won a 1m 4f maiden at The Curragh on October 16.

Meanwhile, the same duo also snapped up Listowel maiden winner Grafton Street (Wootton Bassett) for 48,000gns (approx. AU$102,500). The three-year-old was also offered by Coolmore.

ANZ News

Labour Day weekend saw Riccarton the New Zealand focus on Saturday, Trentham took over for Sunday but Monday’s Te Rapa meeting was halted after race two. Spring’s weather gremlins continue to haunt the industry and drizzle caused a slip and a fall, denying the public a much awaited James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), a popular lead up to next month’s classic Group 1 Guineas races.

So, just the three stakes, namely the War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) for three-year-olds, the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m) and the Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m).

At start four Origin Of Love (Snitzel) bagged the War Decree Stakes, her second victory, with much of the credit to be directed towards rider Joe Doyle who somehow managed to extricate the filly from a tight spot approaching the 300 metres. She levelled up to be one of three across the track at the 150 metres then stuck on gamely when challenged late.

Origin Of Love was purchased from the Arrowfield Stud draft for $440,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Te Akau’s David Ellis. She is the first and so far only foal of her dam, Group 2-placed Sydney and Melbourne winner Re Edit (Camelot), to race. The Waller/Mulcaster team outlayed $360,000 for the filly’s 2023 younger brother.

Her stakes-placed grandam So Divine (High Chaparral) ranks as a sister to Monaco Consul, successful in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) as well as the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) while her great grandam is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Military Plume (Sir Tristram).

The Spring Classic saw Sir Albert (Savabeel) break through for his maiden stakes win, thus the 152nd individual stakes winner for Savabeel (Zabeel). Given a perfect ride by Leah Hemi, he sat one out and one back until the home straight, moved out three wide soon after and took over well before the 300 metres. Clear at the 100 metres he was never in any danger of defeat.

Sir Albert was bred by Waikato Stud but was not offered for sale at Karaka. Instead he was offered via Gavelhouse’s NZB 2020 National Weanling Sale but failed to reach his reserve. Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick retained a part share in the now six-year-old gelding who has raced 25 times, logging eight wins and banking $265,350.

He is one of three winners from four to race from his unraced dam Diana Dors (O’Reilly) whose brothers are Group 2 winners Vigor and Joey Massino. Vigor won eight times and ran third in a Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). Joey Massino won seven times including the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m). Diana Dors’ half-brother Vincent Mangano (No Excuse Needed) scored four Listed races including the Karaka Millions (RL, 1200m).

Sunday’s feature, Trentham’s Thompson Handicap, resulted in back-to-back Group 3s for Hi Yo Sass Bomb (Complacent). This latest win was against her pattern of settling back before a strong finish. Away smartly, she took over the lead at the 1400 metres then ran her rivals ragged, clear by two and half lengths at the wire. The seven-year-old mare enjoys Trentham where she landed her first Group 3, the Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) in 2024 and arrived at Trentham off the back of the Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) win earlier in the month. In 26 starts she has recorded seven wins, a Group 1 second and earnings of $450,270.

Positively beaming

Spring stakes results affect stallion bookings and several New Zealand studs have plenty to crow about as the breeding season approaches its third month. However, those same results are proving superb timing for New Zealand Bloodstock who wrapped up their Ready To Run breeze-ups at Te Rapa last Tuesday. NZB’s managing director Andrew Seabrook will be positively beaming.

The next few months are huge for the auctioneer as they prepare to stage the 100th National Yearling Sale, the first 61 at Trentham and the upcoming 39th at Karaka. Preparations began in November of 2023 and it is anticipated that NZB will be going all out to make the 100th a truly memorable event. They have plenty to celebrate.

Their November 12th and 13th Ready To Run Sale is the most successful sale of its kind and continues to grow in stature. Vendors have perfected the art of sourcing and presenting future successful racehorses. The sale sets the standard and the breeze-ups are conducted on the same surface for all entries providing consistent comparison between lots.

Wm Inglis just concluded their version of the sale and achieved a new high turnover of $19.05 million, an increase of $2.3 million over 2024 for the one day sale. Such a result will be encouraging for NZB. Their sale is a bumper two-day catalogue which this year includes a vast array of sires. It might be an old saying but this year, “something for everyone” is truer than ever.

Shamexpress (Credit: Windsor Park Stud)

Added to the historical success of the Ready To Run Sale are recent stakes results, timed perfectly to entice buyers from Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Represented by four lots is Shamexpress (O’Reilly), sire of The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and world champion sprinter, Ka Ying Rising. With 13 lots is Per Incanto (Street Cry), sire of Everest third Jimmysstar.

From this past weekend, the grand old man Savabeel took his individual stakes winners tally to 152, inching ever closer to the record 166 set by his amazing sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram). Savabeel has 11 two-year-olds catalogued and two of his sons saluted in stakes races on Saturday. The newest is Sir Albert, winner of the Spring Classic at Riccarton. At Moonee Valley, his son Von Hauke took out the Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) which was his second black-type victory, having scored in Flemington’s Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) in March of 2024.

Also at Moonee Valley was She’s A Hustler (Ace High) whose record is quite impressive. Her nine career starts include six wins and three second placings, the Tesio Stakes (Gr 3, 2040m) being her maiden stakes success. Ace High (High Chaparral) has six lots available at Karaka.

Tarzino (Tavistock) sired last Thursday’s Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Torranzino who is guaranteed a start in next month’s $10 million Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Tarzino will be represented by 19 lots at Karaka. On the same Geelong card was Azazel (Shocking), winner of the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) and Shocking (Street Cry) will have four lots on offer.

Ace card

Perhaps the most interesting New Zealand-bred stakes winner at Moonee Valley was She’s A Hustler whose record is wonderfully consistent. The five-year-old mare has raced just nine times and has not finished worse than second including six wins. Her career has been exceptionally well managed by trainer Grahame Begg and Saturday’s breakthrough stakes victory won’t be the mare’s last.

She's A Hustler (Credit: Sportpix)

Similar to a number of successful New Zealand bred stakes winners, She’s A Hustler began her career in New Zealand, in her case as a three-year-old with Roger James and Robert Wellwood, finishing second on debut at Matamata almost two years ago.

In Australia as a four-year-old her six starts resulted in wins at Geelong, Pakenham and twice at Sandown, wrapping up her season with a tough second in the Centaurea Stakes (Listed, 2017m). This season she took out a Benchmark 78 (1800m) at Flemington fresh up prior to Saturday’s Tesio Stakes win. This latest win indicates that the mare is stronger this time in and more wins can be expected. She is totally honest.

A $70,000 purchase from Book 1 of the 2022 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale from the Rich Hill draft, She’s A Hustler is one of five winners from Snow Petal (Bernardini), a winning half-sister to Sydney Group 3 winner Crafty Irna (Starcraft). They are daughters of New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Zirna (Deputy Governor) who was also a major earner in Singapore, banking more than S$1.2 million.

Quirky yet demanding

Old Moonee Valley was a quirky track but the comparatively odd shape had its place despite its quirks including tight turns, long side straights and short 200-metre home straight. While the design favoured on-pace runners who could negotiate the corners, one only needs to look at the long list of champions who were successful there which can only mean that champions find a way.

The old design required great versatility. Instead of waiting for the last run from the 400 metres, old Moonee Valley demanded more. It demanded starting the run from the 600 metres, or earlier, then sustaining the effort once into the short home straight. Again, champions do that.

After 105 runnings, old Moonee Valley gets a refurbishment which realigns the layout by 90 degrees, meaning that the new home straight will occupy what was once the side of the course. The tightish turns will remain but the home straight will increase by about 50 per cent to more than 300 metres.

Will the redesign be better? Only time will tell but for all its oddities the old track had something. It had a point of difference which tested horses. New Moonee Valley will be amazing and as long as the track maintains its unique atmosphere, all will be well.

Huge swings

A look at the Australian Sires’ championship sees huge changes within the last two weeks. The Everest winner Ka Ying Rising and a sudden boost of $7 million has swept his sire Shamexpress to the top of the list. Of course, this will be temporary as the season advances.

The biggest movers are recently departed Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and Lonhro (Octagonal), who died last year. Prior to last weekend Fastnet Rock sat 24th on the list but a great quinella via his northern hemisphere-breds Via Sistina and Buckaroo in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) jumped the champion sire all the way to second. Incidentally, both Via Sistina and Buckaroo are bred on the same Fastnet Rock-Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) cross. Meanwhile, Lonhro, courtesy of a rich weekend Randwick double via Attica and Lindermann, leapt from 15th to 8th.
