Far from feeling the pressure, the weight of millions of expectant eyes that comes with having the favourite in Australia’s greatest race, trainer Tony McEvoy will take Half Yours (St Jean) into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) feeling like “we’ve got a tailwind behind us”.

He has no doubts about the five-year-old going 800 metres further than he’s ever been, no fears of the burden of history as Half Yours strives to become only the 13th Cups double winner. He’s delighted by drawing barrier eight and is further buoyed by the likelihood of rain.

And the more he thinks of the Caulfield Cup, the more the jovial, well-liked 64-year-old believes he could be about to achieve a dream he’s had since he was five - of winning the race that stops the nation, and changes people’s lives.

Half Yours, bought in a daring online raid on Inglis Digital 16 days after last year’s Melbourne Cup for $305,000, was on Sunday a $6.50 favourite for the 165th running of Australia’s biggest and most enduring cultural institution.

McEvoy and his co-trainer son Calvin bought the gelding with long-term associate Wayne Mitchell and Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock, in a dispersal following the death of owner Colin McKenna, who bred Half Yours in tandem with Ciaron Maher, the horse’s original trainer.

Maher, who’d prepared Half Yours to win two of his first five starts, was the underbidder. He’s had to watch in the 12 months since as he's blossomed into a potentially special racehorse, one McEvoy feels will become a weight-for-age star worthy of another feature which will next year also be run at Flemington - the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

McEvoy told ANZ News on Sunday he’d been delighted with Half Yours’ progress since his Caulfield Cup win, which was even better than it may have looked.

What's On

The former jockey, who’s had four previous Melbourne Cup runners for a best of fifth with Hug’s Dancer (Cadeaux Genereux) at $17 in 2004, said he felt no extra burden through having the Cup starter who’ll likely carry more people’s money than any other when the country stops what it’s doing at 3pm on Tuesday.

“No, not at all,” he said. “I think it’s a privilege to have the favourite. It’s a nicer feeling than going in with a 50-1 shot, I can tell you that much.

“The horse is in great order. He’s his normal self. He hasn’t changed. He’s a happy horse, very fit, very sound. He’s just normal, which is all we’ve asked him to be.

“We’ve just been doing maintenance work with him since the Caulfield Cup. He was 515 kilos when he won that, and he’s 508 kilos now, so his weight’s about right. We just didn’t want him to gain weight after Caulfield.

“He’s eating a maximum feed, and he seems perfect.”

Of course the $64,000 question in the $10 million race concerns the entrants’ ability to stay 3200 metres.

Half Yours hasn’t been beyond the 2400 metres of the Caulfield Cup and July’s Listed Caloundra Cup where, regardless of the relatively low grade, he announced himself with a paralysing 4.45-length romp.

He’s certainly bred to stay. He’s by St Jean - a son of Teofilo (Galileo), who’s sired three of the past seven Melbourne Cup winners in Cross Counter, Twilight Payment and Without A Fight. And he’s out of a mare by Desert King (Danehill), sire of no less a stayer than the only triple Melbourne Cup winner, Makybe Diva.

St Jean himself never went past 2400 metres, at which he won Ellerslie’s Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2400m), but he never had the chance. His career was restricted to 19 starts by injury and by being tangled in an ibuprofen mishap at a Victorian rehabilitation farm, which sidelined him for two years and eventually led connections to run him in New Zealand.

The 15-year-old Irish import stands at Victoria’s Brackley Park, where he covered 26 mares in the past four years for $3,300. Thanks to Half Yours’ emergence, he’s now standing for $11,000 (inc GST).

“I’m really relaxed about it,” McEvoy said of the two mile question, joking that Half Yours could probably run in a certain 4600-metre event at Warrnambool, let alone Flemington’s highlight.

“If you go through his pedigree, he’s probably bred to run a Jericho Cup.

“St Jean could stay all day, and there’s so much depth of staying pedigree in the family, I would be amazed if he didn’t stay the tip.

“Ash Morgan said he couldn’t pull him up after the Caloundra Cup. Jamie Melham said he didn’t want to stop after the Caulfield Cup. He’s got an incredible capacity, and I don’t think the two miles will worry him at all.”

The weather bureau is forecasting a 100 per cent chance of rain for Flemington on Monday, and an 85 per cent chance for Tuesday - music to McEvoy’s ears. Half Yours has won three from eight on good tracks, three from five on soft, and one from one on heavy - a 3.43-length stroll in an 1800-metre Rosehill benchmark 78, en route to Queensland in May.

“Bring on the rain,” the trainer said. “It’s another box ticked for him if it rains. He’s actually better on soft.”

The luck also went Half Yours’ way at the barrier draw.

“Gate eight is beautiful,” McEvoy said. “It just allows Jamie to come out and relax on his neck, not have to make any decision.

“Those who’ve drawn wide have to either go forward or back. All we’ve got to do is come and just relax, and just ride him to run the trip - get him nice and relaxed, and make sure he’s breathing.”

Half Yours jumped from gate two in the Caulfield Cup, settling midfield, before coming wide entering the straight and holding on to win by 0.46 lengths over the fast-finishing River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) and Valiant King (Roaring Lion), who are at $17 and $8 for Tuesday.

Aside from Half Yours being full of running after the post, Melham reported he’d been hampered for most of the race by Meydaan (Frankel), who finished a meritorious ninth after travelling wide, and is at $15 in the Melbourne Cup.

“We had a good run in the race, but we got laid on for a mile-and-a-quarter of the mile-and-a-half by Meydaan,” McEvoy said. “Jamie said he was just getting put off balance the whole time.

“Valiant King was a very good run, but he just sat back last and came through the inside, and finished fabulous.

“River Of Stars had a magnificent run, then popped out and ran second. They were very good runs, but they had perfect runs in transit too.

“I don’t think there were any better runs in the Caulfield Cup than ours, to be honest.”

What probably presents more fears for McEvoy are the lesser known opponents, such as topweight Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett), Australian Bloodstock’s $9 chance.

Coming from back-to-back wins in the Curragh Cup (Gr 2, 1m 6f) and Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f), the six-year-old entire will try to raise Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien’s third Cup success after Rekindling (High Chaparral) in 2017 and Twilight Payment (Teofilo) in 2020.

“It’s the new wave of horses - the ones we haven’t seen and we don’t know, that you wonder about,” McEvoy said. “Al Riffa’s obviously a star, but he’s got to carry 59 kilos, so he’s going to need to be a star.”

Star quality was what the McEvoys knew they had after taking the then lightly-raced four-year-old Half Yours to the tail end of Queensland’s winter carnival.

“I wanted to take him away to grow him up a little bit,” McEvoy recalled. “He was very immature, a bit of a juvenile thinker with his brain; he was bouncy and pushy.

“So we travelled him, and probably the Caloundra Cup was the one where we thought, ‘Wow’.”

The McEvoys set a plan for Half Yours to run in Randwick’s The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) on October 4, before the Caulfield Cup on October 18, with a lead-up in the set weights Kingstown Town Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on September 20.

They floated their stayer from Queensland to Sydney, but when he only made second emergency for the Kingston Town, the McEvoys entered him for Caulfield’s Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on the same day. He was still only first emergency for that quality handicap.

“We sat and waited, and when Chris Waller decided to run [eventual winner] Birdman in the Kingston Town, we put Half Yours on a float from Sydney to Melbourne to run in the Naturalism. Thankfully, we got a run, and we went from there,” McEvoy said.

Under 54.5kg, Half Yours demolished the Naturalism field by 3.5 lengths as $2.60 favourite, before going to the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). McEvoy didn’t expect him to threaten a star-studded field under the set weights scale there, but he finished a 2.67-length fourth, just a neck behind Horse of the Year Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock).

“What a trial that was,” McEvoy said. “To be finishing alongside Via Sistina was incredible. What that showed me is he’ll actually be a weight-for-age horse next year. He’ll run in the Cox Plate at Flemington next year.”

The rest has been history, with more beckoning.

Half Yours is seeking to become just the 13th Cups doubles winner since the Caulfield Cup’s inception in 1879. That stat doesn’t daunt McEvoy - notwithstanding that Half Yours would be the second to do it in only three years, after Without A Fight.

“I look forward, not back,” he said. “We’re just playing with what we’ve got in front of us. We’ve had a magnificent prep, and even the barrier draw showed we’ve got a bit of momentum.

“We feel like we’ve got a bit of a tailwind.”

And what would success mean to McEvoy?

Among the majors, he’s trained a Cox Plate winner in Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton), and now a Caulfield Cup winner.

In his years working for Lindsay Park, he was associated with three Melbourne Cup victors. He was riding work when Beldale Ball (Nashua) won it in 1980, and was a stable foreman when At Talaq (Roberto) and Jeune (Kalaglow) won in 1986 and in 1994.

But he hasn’t yet managed a victory in the grand handicap in his own right.

“It’s the one race on our calendar that’s actually life-changing,” McEvoy said.

“It’s the one race where everybody stops and watches, and the names of Melbourne Cup winners are etched in everyone’s minds, and I think it’s very special.

“I was there with the Lindsay Park stable for Beldale Ball, At Talaq and Jeune. They were amazing. What they did with their wins, it just lifted the whole place, lifted everyone’s spirits. It’s why we do what we do. It’s the big race. It’s the big one.

“When I was five, six, seven, I used to burn around on my pony on the farm wanting to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup.

“That never eventuated, but now I’ve got an opportunity to train a winner of the Melbourne Cup. It’s quite amazing.”

Mullins on the hunt for rare double

Absurde (Credit: Racing Photos)

Willie Mullins will arrive in Melbourne on the hunt for a rare double. The Irish trainer will land in the country to watch Absurde (Fastnet Rock) line up for a third time in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) fresh from being supplied with his first win at the Breeders’ Cup meeting on Saturday.

Mullins tasted his first victory at the prestigious meeting when Ethical Diamond (Awtaad) defeated a talent-packed Breeders' Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) field at Del Mar. Absurde has finished seventh and fifth respectively in the past two Melbourne Cups and his third attempt comes after a pleasing seventh in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on October 18.

However, it has not been plainsailing in the lead up to this year’s Flemington showpiece for Mullins camp. They had a scare on Thursday when Racing Victoria vets said the gelding had an altered gait from video supplied prior to coming to Melbourne.

David Casey, who has been in Melbourne looking after Absurde, was not concerned and the gelding was given the green light to start by RV vets on Saturday morning. All Melbourne Cup runners need to pass a final fitness test on Monday.

"I check him after every run and piece of work at home, and I know the way he is," Casey said.

"It [the inspection] was soon after his piece of work [on Thursday] and I knew he would be fine the next morning.

"Thankfully, he was good on Friday and again on Saturday morning and touch wood, I expect everything to be good on Monday."

In a change to previous trips for the Cup, Absurde had a lead up race in the Caulfield Cup, finishing seventh to Cup favourite Half Yours (St Jean).

"He pulled out of the run very good," Casey said.

"I think the race did him the world of good and his work during the week was very good.

"I'm not sure that we want all the rain that is coming, but we'll deal with it and we're looking forward to the race."

Kerrin McEvoy is looking to join Harry White and Bobbie Lewis on four Cup winners when he partners Absurde on Tuesday.

All systems go for Onesmoothoperator

Brian Ellison has been very pleased with Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) since his win in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) and, after a smoother lead up than last year, the trainer is expecting a better performance in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. With two days to go until race time, Ellison said this year's Cup campaign had gone without a hitch. "We had a bad week last year after Geelong," Ellison said. "We were clipping him, and he jumped back and caught a heel and pulled a shoe off and got a cut on his heel. He was clipped earlier, he's been tidied up and he's nice and good and looks better this year. He's also a better horse now and he learned a lot from last year [when he finished 12th]. He enjoys being out here. At Moonee Valley he showed a great turn of foot. He's improved from the race as he hadn't raced for two months, and I think we're in a great place. At the moment, touch wood, everything has been going to plan, but we've still got two days to get through." Onesmoothoperator completed his preparation with a breeze at Werribee on Saturday morning when his Cup rider Harry Coffey came in to partner the gelding. Ellison said victory on Tuesday would mean everything to the trainer who has raced horses in England, Ireland, France, Dubai and the US. It's the best place ever to come racing," Ellison said. “I've been to France, America and this is by far the best place I have ever come." There remain some plans to head to Hong Kong depending on Tuesday's result, or even to the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) in January where the stayer would race under the care of Bendigo trainer Tim Fitzsimmons.

Weather a key element for Meydaan

Team Crisford are hoping the predicted rain in Melbourne does not appear ahead of Meydaan’s (Frankel) run in the Melbourne Cup. Co-trainer Ed Crisford said he and father Simon were pleased to have Meydaan going to Flemington after not handling the track in the Caulfield Cup, but he said the forecast for the next few days in Melbourne has shaken a little of that confidence. “I think it depends on how much rain we have,” Crisford told Racing.com. “I’m sure he can go on good to soft, but if it goes heavy and it’s real testing, he’s into the unknown and I don’t know to be honest until we see him run on it. But I think soft will be fine. I know 22 is a tough draw but, I guess, on a wet track, you are probably better on the outside than on the inside. We’re due to have 30mm on Monday and more on Tuesday, but the draw is the draw. It’s the luck of the draw, so it’s up to J Mac [James McDonald] now. “His last run against Giavellotto, who ran well [fourth] in the Arc (Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe) and Kalpana [seventh in the Arc], was very good and if he brings that form, he should be right in the mix.”

Grewe retains confidence in Flatten The Curve

Barrier 17 is hardly the ideal barrier draw for a first attempt at a Melbourne Cup, but German trainer Hank Grewe immediately saw a distinct positive for his horse Flatten The Curve (Zarak). "I think it's OK because we are next to Al Riffa [barrier 19] and I hope he can follow Al Riffa because he is the horse to beat and we are a big stayer," Grewe said moments after the draw. "Mark Zahra [Al Riffa's rider] knows where to go in the race so we hope to follow him." Grewe is on his first trip to Australia, so he knows little of the local form, but Al Riffa is another story. One of Europe's best stayers, Grewe got to see him close up 14 months ago when he travelled to win the Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr 1, 2400m) at Hoppegarten by five lengths. Grewe said he feels Flatten The Curve will be able to adapt to Australian racing and make the Melbourne Cup debut for his rider Thore Hammer-Hansen that little bit easier. "He’s a very easy horse," he said. "He can go on-pace, behind or middle, depending on the pace. [He’s a] Very easy horse to ride. We’re hopeful of soft ground because he is such a big stayer and soft ground suits us. We’re confident because we have a light weight and he can stay."

Lovett hoping class can play part with Al Riffa

Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett is hoping the cream rises to the top when Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) takes his chance in the upcoming Melbourne Cup.

Australian Bloodstock has shares in three Melbourne Cup runners in Al Riffa, Vauban (Galiway) and Royal Supremacy (Make Believe), but Al Riffa was always going to take much of the attention in the lead-up due to his recent form in the Curragh Cup (Gr 2, 1m 6f) and Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) which sees him shoulder a whopping 59 kilograms in the $10 million race.

But despite barrier 19 seemingly adding another complication for Al Riffa, Lovett told Racing.com the horse’s immense class made it difficult to discount him. “Essentially, you always like to draw in but if the rain comes, I’m probably not that disappointed,” Lovett said of the horse Australian Bloodstock part-purchased mid-year.

“I know there will be plenty of speed from outside. Changingoftheguard has drawn 24 and I assume the intention will be to go forward so hoping Mark [Zahra] can get on the back of that and get in somewhere.

“They tell me the horse is great. He never lost any weight on the trip over, and his work has been good, and we’re really excited for Tuesday. I think he’s in a good spot. He obviously has got to overcome topweight, which history would suggest is very hard to win with, but I think he’s a very good horse.

“I’m very confident he will run very well whether or not weight is a factor but he’s one of the better horses to come down in recent times and he just might be able to carry that weight. “Don’t forget that Joseph [O’Brien] has won two of these [Melbourne Cups] so that experience has got to help as well.”

Lovett said the 21 barrier for Royal Supremacy came as a blow.

“I was a bit disappointed with the draw for Royal Supremacy, so we’re just going to have to go back and ride for luck, but Vauban from barrier two is interesting,” he said.

“Obviously, he [Vauban] was disappointing in the Caulfield Cup and if you’re looking for an excuse, Blake Shinn said he was on the wrong leg the whole way around, but he was probably a little bit close [to the speed].

“We’re hoping on Tuesday, drawn barrier two, he takes no part early. Hoping there’s plenty of speed. Some of his best races in Europe has been when he was left alone.

“If you remember his win in the Sky High in Sydney, he came from right behind them and I suspect they are going to run this at a fairly good clip and it just might suit him.

“All his best form in Europe is on forgiving or yielding ground, as they call it.

“He’s a different horse to the first two times here, he went to pieces in the yard and Gai (Waterhouse) and Adrian (Bott) have done an amazing job to get this horse to be relaxed so if he parades well, I can’t have him not running well.”

Maher liking Royal Supremacy’s chances

While Ciaron Maher is in agreement with Jamie Lovett that Royal Supremacy’s barrier draw for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup is not ideal, he does believe the horse will outperform his $34 odds. Royal Supremacy drew 21 of 24 on Saturday evening for the Cup and although Maher told Racing.com’s The Verdict that the draw means he will have to take some early medicine, he said he felt the horse was peaking and capable of challenging. “He’s a horse who has an endless amount of energy,” Maher said on Sunday morning. “He pulled quite hard in the Metropolitan and he pulled very hard in the Caulfield Cup and he’s a horse right at the top of his game. He worked earlier in the week and again this morning and he’ll probably do a bit on Cup morning. He’s got a really low weight [51kgs]. Robbie [Dolan, his jockey] knows what he’s doing and if the rain does come, he can tick that box as well.” Maher said the barrier draw did restrict Royal Supremacy’s options early in the race. “You’ve got to get the first half right in a two-mile race, so we’ll sit down and nut out a plan, or as much of a plan you can, but I’d say you wouldn’t light him up too much, so he’ll probably have to take his medicine early.” Maher said he was content with his three-horse team of Royal Supremacy ($34), Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) ($34) and Smokin’ Romans (Ghibellines) ($101) going into the Cup “They all went down the beach this morning (Sunday) and they are all tracking pretty well for Tuesday,” he said.

Yulong mares to go their separate ways on Champions day

After finishing first and third when clashing in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), Yulong have decided to split their star mares Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) for their respective next starts. The Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina will aim for a second-successive Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) victory, trainer Matt Laurie revealed on Saturday that Treasurethe Moment is set to drop back in trip for the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), with both races taking place next Saturday. "We'll run her in the 1600 [metres]," Laurie told Racing.com. "I’m very happy with her. She bounced out of the Cox Plate. I think the team [Yulong] are keen to separate them and I just think the mile, she can sit just off the speed and come into it. My initial thought is the mile might be the better race for her. Her Cox Plate run was outstanding and it was just great to see her back to her best. I've just got the feeling that we've got her back to where she was before the setback, so she's still a bit on the up.” Laurie is set for another Group 1 runner a week after the Champions meeting as his three-year-old Vinrock (I Am Invincible) is poised to tackle the $1 million C.F. Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield. Vinrock was withdrawn from Saturday's Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), but Laurie explained there was nothing amiss with the Caulfield Guineas' fourth placegetter. "If we are going to go the 1400 metres of the Orr, probably running today at the mile was not ideal so we'll wait for Caulfield," the trainer said.

Tavi Time targets Big Dance redemption

Kris Lees says the boom on Tavi Time (Tavistock) a year ago was potentially a bit premature. The six-year-old started favourite in the $3 million Big Dance (1600m) last year and ran a respectable fourth behind Gringotts (Per Incanto) and Lees said a year on he’s a better product. He’ll need to be, as the Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) winner rises 4kg to carry 57kg and will meet top weight Gringotts again with a similar weight differential. “He got in well at the weights last year, he had a bit of a boom on him early with a good win record in questionable company but he’s going very well now and he will run well,’’ Lees told Racing NSW. “He is a touch under the radar this year. I think he’s going as good, if not possibly better.” Tavi Time, $6.50 with TAB on Sunday, will head to Randwick third-up after resuming in the Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m) where he ran fourth and another closing fifth in the $1.5m Alan Brown (1400m). He’ll meet the winner of those races 2.5kg better for a length and a half defeat at their last meeting. “His lead up runs have all been geared toward this race and he’s come up with a nice gate,’’ Lees said. “He probably doesn’t want any more weight than what he’s carrying but he gets away from those top ones quite well so he looks to get his chance.”

RV donates $75,000 to Prebble

The racing industry continues to throw its arm around injured jockey Tom Prebble as a GoFundMe launched to help his recovery edge closer to its goal.

Racing Victoria on Saturday afternoon donated $75,000 to the cause with the target set at $230,000.

Trainer Andrew Bobbin donated $10,000 as did Des O'Keefe, while leading jockeys and trainers including Blake Shinn, Tatum Bull, Liam Riordan, Ben Melham, Ethan Brown, Declan Bates, David Eustace and Calvin McEvoy also made significant donations.

Almost two months on from the spinal cord injury he suffered when falling from his horse at Warrnambool, Prebble has been diagnosed by doctors at The Alfred Hospital with a ‘complete ASIA A paraplegia at T4 level’.

Essentially, this means that he has no sensory or motor function below the T4 spinal cord level, resulting in complete paralysis from the chest down.

However, he has retained arm function and in a sign of his determination to adjust to his new circumstances, Prebble’s first wish – with the assistance of the GoFundMe donations – is to acquire a road-based handcycle.

Prebble, who rode a career total of 123 winners – including one in stakes company at Flemington, was widely considered one of the rising stars of the Victorian jockey ranks.

“Tom’s positive approach since receiving his devastating diagnosis has been nothing short of inspirational," Racing Victoria CEO Aaron Morrison said.

“His life-changing injuries have deeply affected many in the industry including our team running the Apprentice Jockey Training Program, who mentored Tom during his formative years as an apprentice jockey.

“We’ve seen in the past that the racing industry rallies round one of its own in times of need, and so we would encourage anyone who has met Tom or is even aware of his ordeal to make a donation, however small.

“He’s an absolute credit to his parents, Brett and Maree, who have been a real tower of strength. We wish the entire family all the very best as they adjust to Tom’s challenging new circumstances, which I have no doubt he will face with his customary courage and dignity.”

Andertons bringing strength in numbers to Wingatui

Inflamed (Credit: Race Images)

Local trainers Brian and Shane Anderton will have strength in numbers at their home track’s Melbourne Cup day meeting on Tuesday. The Wingatui-based father and son partnership have accepted 17 runners across the nine-race card, including three in the headlining Grand Casino Open Handicap (1400m) in Capo Dell Impero (Ghibellines), Inflamed (Ghibellines) and Mayor Of Norwood (Ghibellines). The trio have accumulated 18 wins between them, with full-brothers Capo Dell Impero and Mayor Of Norwood particularly effective over middle-to-staying distances. Brian Anderton is expecting his two well-performed geldings to find the trip a touch sharp first-up this preparation, but hopes to see a strong resuming effort. “Capo Dell Impero is coming up alright, he’s probably going to find this a bit short but he’ll run alright,” he said. “The other old boy, Mayor Of Norwood, he’s really done well this time in. Once again it’ll probably be a bit short for him but he’s going well.” Inflamed has featured prominently in strong sprint races, including finishing seventh in last year’s Steward’s Stakes (Listed, 1200m) during New Zealand Cup week, but is searching for that form this time in. “We felt Inflamed hadn’t been putting her best into her racing but she’ll get better ground on Tuesday and we’ve put blinkers on her to try and wake her up a bit,” Anderton said. “It’ll be interesting to see how she goes.”

Gerard keeping her eye on Riccarton prize

Despite a tricky preparation, Pam Gerard has New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) aspirations for Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes). The gelding was set to run in the James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m) at Te Rapa on Labour Day, and after the meeting was abandoned following the first two races, the trainer opted to bypass take two at Tauranga on Saturday, instead accepting in the Show By SkyCity (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Ellerslie. In Gerard’s view, Ellerslie was a better fit for the big-striding son of Yes Yes Yes (Rubick). “We’ve had to do what we had to, he’s a horse who goes well at Auckland and we know we’re going to get an even surface there,” she said. “Tauranga could’ve gone either way, we could’ve got more rain and then sometimes after it’s been wet all winter, they can come out there, go absolutely mad and be quite roughly-run races as we saw yesterday. He’s a big leggy fella and he didn’t need to be getting tangled up around there. We took the option of Ellerslie, it’s a shame it’s not a stakes race but at the end of the day, the Sarten has always been run 11 days before the Guineas and that’s how it’s worked out.”

Five of the best for Tyler on home turf

Local trainer Kelvin Tyler had a day out on his home track of Riverton on Sunday, training five winners including the two features with Master Marko (Contributer) and Prince Alby (Sacred Falls). To make the result even more impressive, Tyler and his wife Vanessa either own and part-own all five winners, and bred a pair of them as well. “It was a great day and I’m very appreciative of everyone involved,” Tyler said. “It’s always good to have a day like this, especially at your local meeting.” Master Marko landed the Phil Bevin Spraying Handicap (1600m), while Prince Alby took out the Sparrow Logging Handicap (2147m). The first winner of the afternoon was provided by Sight To See (Time Test), they landed their second winner when It’s Marlin (Ghibellines) and after striking in the two feature races, the five-timer was brought up by More Sass (Mongolian Falcon).

Maurice (Screen Hero) is currently on shuttle duty at Arrowfield Stud where he is standing for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST).

Four for Palace Pier

Astonishing is a sister to Group 3 scorer Sub Rose, the dam of Group-winning pair Subway Dancer (Shamardal) and Secret Advisor (Dubawi).

Two for Romanised

Haras de Bouquetot resident Romanised (Holy Roman Emperor) was provided with his second individual stakes winner courtesy of Cielo Di Roma’s (2 c ex Suestar by Dark Angel) win in the Prix Zeddaan (Listed, 1400m) at Deauville on Sunday. Trained by Gianluca Bietolini, the colt defeated Kozlovskha (Hello Youmzain) by a length with another length and three-quarters back to Sagarmatha (Palace Pier) in third. Purchased by Marco Bozzi for €78,000 last year’s Arqana October Yearling Sale, Cielo Di Roma is out of Suestar (Dark Angel) and hails from the same family as Group 3 scorer Race For The Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus).

Five for Expert Eye

Expert Eye (Acclamation) was handed his fifth individual stakes winner courtesy of Beset’s (4 f ex Beshayer by Galileo) stylish victory in Sunday’s Finale Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at the Curragh. Trained by Joseph O’Brien and ridden by Declan McDonogh, the filly came home strongly, crossing the line seven and half lengths clear of the runner-up, Royal Entry (Fracas). Beset was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock for 25,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale last year. The filly is out of the winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Beshayer and she is a sister to Group 3 winner Leo’s Starlet and a half-sister to stakes winner Anabaa’s Creation (Anabaa). Beshayer is also a sister to Starlet’s Sister, the dam of multiple Group 1 winners Sottsass (Siyouni) and Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie) as well as Group 2 winner Shin Emperor (Siyouni). Expert Eye stands at Paardeberg Stud in South Africa.

ITY: Charlotte’s Web takes Premio Lydia Tesio

The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Charlotte’s Web (4 f Night Of Thunder - Chamundi Hills by Lope De Vega) added a first Group to her record when she landed Sunday’s Premio Lydia Tesio (Gr 2, 2000m) at Rome. Ridden by Jack Mitchell, the filly defeated Pink Black (National Defense) by a length and a half with another neck back Sioux Life (Sioux Nation) in third. Bred by Godolphin and raced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Charlotte’s Web first taste of black type came when she landed the Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) in August.

Third for Awtaad

Ethical Diamond (5 g ex Pearl Diamond by Areion) provided Derrinstown Stud stallion Awtaad (Cape Cross) with his third individual Grade 1 winner when he ran out a shock victor of the Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) at Del Mar on Saturday. Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle for trainer Willie Mullins, who was having his first runner at the Breeders’ Cup meeting, the five-year-old gelding came with a wet sail down the outside of his rivals in the home straight and denied the Charlie Appleby-trained Rebel’s Romance (Dubawi) – who won the 2022 and 2024 renewals – by a length and a quarter at the line. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to the runner-up’s stablemate, El Cordobes (Frankel), in third place. Bred by W J Kennedy, Ethical Diamond was purchased for 320,000gns by his trainer and Harold Kirk at the 2023 Tattersalls July Mixed Sale and is raced by the H O S Syndicate. He is the third foal out of the winning Areion (Big Shuffle) mare Pearl Diamond, herself closely related to German Group 2 winner Precious Boy (Big Shuffle) and Group-placed winner Prema (Big Shuffle). Awtaad stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €7,500 (approx. AU$13,290).

US: Mullins conquerors the Breeders’ Cup

Willie Mullins made history as Ethical Diamond caused a 20-1 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Ethical Diamond, who has run seven of his 15 races over hurdles, had never competed at Group level on the Flat and arrived after landing two valuable handicaps – the Duke of Edinburgh (1m 4f) at Royal Ascot and the Ebor (1m 5.5f) at York. As the first trainer to send a horse from winning the Ebor to the Breeders’ Cup, Mullins said: “I’ve always said winning the Grand National with my son Patrick [was my greatest achievement], but this might come second best. I just couldn’t believe it. I looked at where he was and the speed he was going and I said, ‘this is going to be on’. David Casey was instrumental in sending him here, so I have to give a shout-out to him. He’s in Australia with Absurde. After the draw in 14, I thought maybe sixth, seventh or eighth, but when Aidan [O’Brien’s] horse won from 14 on Friday that gave me a little bit more confidence it could be done. The tactics are a key part to him and Dylan, being the cool man he is, executed them perfectly.”

35 for Tapit

Scylla (5 m ex Close Hatches by First Defence) became the 35th individual Grade 1 winner for Gainesway stallion Tapit (Pulpit) when storming to success in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) at Del Mar. Ridden by Junior Alvarado for trainer Bill Mott, the five-year-old mare made most of the running in the nine-furlong contest and impressively kicked clear down the home straight to run out a five and a half lengths winner over Nitrogen (Medaglia D’Oro). There was a further half-length back to the third-placed Regaled (Mohaymen). Bred and raced by Juddmonte, Scylla is a sister to Grade 2 winner Tacitus and winner Maximus Aurelius being out of the multiple Grade 1-winning mare Close Hatches (First Defence), herself a sister to stakes winner Lockdown, who in turn produced multiple Grade 1 winner Idiomatic (Curlin), this is also the family of Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Siskin (First Defence). Tapit will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of US$185,000 (approx. AU$282,700).

11 for Nyquist

Nysos (4 c ex Zetta Z by Bernardini) became the 11th individual Grade 1 winner for Jonabell Farm stallion Nyquist (Uncle Mo) when he took out the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Del Mar on Saturday. Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Bob Baffert, the four-year-old colt engaged in an enduring battle down the home straight with his pacesetting stablemate Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) but got the verdict in a photo-finish at the line. There was a further three and a quarter lengths back to the third-placed Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie). Bred by Atkins Susie, Nysos has passed through the sales ring on three occasions with the most recent being at the 2023 Ocala Spring Two-Year-Old Sale where he was purchased for US$550,000 by his current owner Baoma Corporation. Closely related to winner Bandon Woods (Uncle Mo) and a half-brother to winners Mr Axel (Palace Malice) and Attabe (Distorted Humor), he is out of the unraced Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Zetta Z, herself a granddaughter of Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Unbridled Elaine (Unbridled’s Song). Zetta Z was bought by Coolmore Stud for US$2 million at the Fasig-Tipton Mixed Sale in 2024. Nyquist stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$175,000 (approx. AU$267,420).

First for Mitole

Spendthrift Farm stallion Mitole (Eskendereya) was provided with his first Grade 1 winner when the Jose Francisco D’Angelo-trained Shisospicy (3 f ex Mischief Galore by Into Mischief) routed her rivals in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) at Del Mar. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr, Shisospicy became the first three-year-old filly to win the Turf Sprint as she made all and kicked clear in the closing stages to readily defeat Ag Bullet (Twirling Candy) by two and a half lengths. There was a further half-length back to dual Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Khaadem (Dark Angel) in third place. Bred by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Shisospicy was first purchased by Fish Stables for US$100,000 at the 2023 Keeneland January Mixed Sale before being resold to Hartley and De Renzo Thoroughbreds for US$200,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Select Yearling Sale the same year. Racing in the silks of Qatar Racing, who own her in partnership with Morplay Racing, she is a sister to winner Sapphire Nights being out of the winning Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) mare Mischief Galore. Mitole will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of US$10,000 (approx. AU$15,280).

First for Audible

Splendora (4 f ex Miss Freeze by Frost Giant) became the first Grade 1 winner for WinStar Farm stallion Audible (Into Mischief) when he won Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) at Del Mar. Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Bob Baffert, the four-year-old filly hit the front rounding the home turn and stayed on well to beat Vahva (Gun Runner) by an impressive four and three-quarter lengths with a further length and a quarter back to the pacesetting favourite Hope Road (Quality Road) in third. Bred by The Elkstone Group, Splendora was purchased by her owner Talla Racing and Rockingham Ranch for US$125,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton July Select Yearling Sale. Out of the stakes-winning Frost Giant (Giant’s Causeway) mare Miss Freeze, she is a half-sister to winner Firsttimeinforever (Always Dreaming). Audible will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of US$7,500 (approx. AU$11,460).

First for Valiant Minister

Having sent out his first Breeders’ Cup winner with Shisospicy in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, trainer Jose Francisco D’Angelo chalked up his second just 40 minutes later when Bentornato (4 c ex Her Special Way by Put It Back) put up a bold front-running display to land the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at Del Mar on Saturday. The victory provided Bridlewood Farm stallion Valiant Minister (Candy Ride) with his first elite-level winner. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr, who was also enjoying a quickfire Grade 1 double, the four-year-old colt travelled well rounding the home bend and kicked further clear of his rivals to run out a two and a quarter lengths winner over Imagination (Into Mischief), going one better than his half-length second to Straight No Chaser (Speightster) in the same contest last year. There was a further nose back to Dr. Venkman (Ghostzapper) in third place. Bred by Tanma Corp, Bentornato was first purchased by Pro Racing Stable for US$45,000 at the 2022 Ocala October Yearling Sale before being resold to Champion Equine for US$170,000 at the following year's Ocala March Two-Year-Old Sale. Bentornato is raced by Leon King Stable Corp alongside Michael and Julia C Iavarone, with the latter pair having purchased a 25 per cent stake in the horse at the Keeneland Championship Sale on October 29 for US$1 million (approx. AU$1.52 million). Out of the winning Put It Back (Honour And Glory) mare Her Special Way, he is a half-brother to winner She Broke My Heart (Admiral Kitten). Valiant Minister stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$5,000 (approx. AU$7,640).

US: Japan’s Forever Young scores Breeders’ Cup Classic redemption

Having run a bold third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) in 2024, Japan’s leading dirt horse Forever Young (4 c Real Steel - Forever Darling by Congrats) went two places better on Saturday when he produced a brave display in the US$7 million (approx. AU$10.69 million) showpiece. Ridden by Ryusei Sakai, the Yoshito Yahagi-trained four-year-old colt unleashed a quality turn of foot to kick clear in the home straight and held on by a half-length from the fast-finishing Sierra Leone (Gun Runner), who had won the contest last year. There was a further length back to Fierceness (City Of Light), who had been second in 2024, in third place. The win was Japan’s third at the Breeders’ Cup meeting, with all of them coming courtesy of Yahagi, and their first success in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Both the second and third were confirmed as being retired to stud following the race. "I feel like I've created a new page for Japanese horse racing," owner Susumu Fujita told NBC. While the winning trainer Yahagi said: “This is like if the Japanese team won the World Cup. The horse racing industry never expected us to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic. We appreciate the horse and we've got the number one in America. He will be back next year."

US: Notable Speech wows in decisive Breeders’ Cup Mile victory

The Charlie Appleby-trained Notable Speech (4 c Dubawi - Swift Rose by Invincible Spirit) proved a cut above his rivals in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) when he ran out a dominant winner of the US$2 million (approx. AU$3.05 million) contest. Ridden by William Buick for trainer Charlie Appleby, the four-year-old colt was given a rail-running rider after breaking from barrier two and, having travelled well into the home straight, unleashed a devastating turn of foot approaching the final furlong to come home a length and a half ahead of Formidable Man (City Of Light), improving two places on his third in the 2024 renewal. There was a further head back to The Lion In Winter (Sea The Stars) in third. Saturday’s victory was Notable Speech’s fourth career elite-level success. "I've been everything on this horse, a hero and a villain," the winning rider told NBC. "But Charlie [Appleby] always has confidence. He broke a bit better but we were always going to ride him on the inside." Meanwhile, the winning trainer said: "He's tailor-made for this track. Will's [Buick] ride was copybook, if you could write a script on how to go around there that's it."

US: Gezora grabs second win in elite-company

Francis Graffard’s glittering autumn continued as this year’s Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) winner Gezora (3 f Almanzor - Germance by Silver Hawk) ran down She Feels Pretty (Karakontie) to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Gr 1, 11f) at Del Mar on Saturday. It marked a first Breeders’ Cup success for the trainer, who landed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) with Daryz (Sea The Stars) last month, and a second win at the prestigious meeting for jockey Mickael Barzalona. Gezora, who finished 13th in the Arc, bounced back at Del Mar with a brilliant performance to give France their first Breeders’ Cup victory since 2017. It was also a landmark moment for Graffard, who recorded his 13th top-level win of the season, equalling the record for a French trainer set by Andre Fabre in 1992. Graffard was seen wildly celebrating on NBC’s coverage and said: “It’s amazing. She’s a very good filly. I was questioning myself, do I train them properly to win a race on a course like this? It took me three runners to get the win. What a perfect run and what a filly she is. She’s small but has the biggest heart of any I’ve ever trained. She’s amazing and gives us so much emotion. It's a meeting I absolutely admire and I really want to be competitive here. We'll keep trying, it's done now and we'll look for the next one."

Diego Velazquez to shuttle to Swettenham Stud

Diego Velazquez, a Group 1-winning son of Frankel (Galileo), will shuttle to Swettenham Stud in 2026.

The Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) winner will arrive in Australia after covering his first book of mares at the National Stud in Newmarket at a fee of £17,500.

Adam Sangster, Swettenham Stud principal, and brother to Sam, who purchased the colt before his career-defining triumph in the Deauville Group 1 in August, said he was delighted to offer breeders in the southern hemisphere a horse of Diego Velazquez’s calibre.

He said: “As an industry, we have all been waiting for a fast son of Frankel to stand in Australia, and to purchase the most precocious son of his generation who won the stallion-making European mile was a stroke of genius from my brother Sam.

“The victory certainly helped facilitate standing Diego Velazquez in Australia for Sam and his partners, as we at Swettenham are very selective in who we stand so that breeders can have the greatest chance of a return on investment.”

“There is a tremendous sense of family pride working together with Sam to stand Diego Velazquez. We have already discussed the mares they’re supporting him with in the northern hemisphere, and we are incredibly excited about getting behind him with some quality mares in the southern hemisphere.”

Bred by Epona Bloodstock, Diego Velazquez was bought by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for 2.4 million guineas at Book 1 of the Tattersalls Yearling Sale.

The four-year-old is the 11th and final foal out of the stakes-winning mare Sweepstake (Acclamation), making him a three-parts brother to Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2400m) scorer Broome (Australia) and multiple Group winner and Group 1-placed Point Lonsdale (Australia).

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the colt raced for the duration of his career for Coolmore and their partners, but carried the iconic Sangster colours to victory in the Prix Jacques le Marois.

Diego Velazquez was a near five-length winner on his debut at two at the Curragh and followed up with a first Group win in the Champions Juvenile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Leopardstown.

He began his three-year-old campaign last year with a close-up fourth in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) and bounced back later that term to win the Meld Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f) and Solonaway Stakes (Gr 2, 1m).

After finishing ninth in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot, Diego Velazquez returned to a winning groove with victory in the Minstrel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh, which he backed up with his victory over 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner and Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Notable Speech (Dubawi) in the Prix Jacques le Marois.

Sam Sangster added: "He's a horse who leaves little to the imagination. He is the stamp of his father and a top-class racehorse to match. He's done it at Group 2 level across three seasons and was Classic-placed, which gives him a rare depth of form and longevity. Topped off with a Group 1 success in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, one of Europe’s premier stallion-making races."

A fee for the son of Frankel will be announced at a later date.

Teetan reaches 300 Happy Valley wins with Storm Rider’s success

Capitalising on Storm Rider’s (Dracarys) promotion into the HK$2.84 million Class 2 Guangzhou Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley on Sunday, Karis Teetan slotted his 300th win at the city circuit to join Zac Purton as the only active jockeys in Hong Kong to achieve the feat.

Storm Rider (118lb) was promoted into the field as a standby declared runner with the withdrawal of Packing Bole (Deep Field), inheriting barrier one – and duly saluted – to continue David Hayes’ golden streak of success.

“You know you’re having a good run when that happens,” said Hayes. “Barriers win races and he drew the beautiful barrier. He’s gone all the way now to the upper class, which is wonderful. When he was second last time by a short head, he probably ran the best sectional of the day.

“I think he’ll be able to hold his spot in the upper class. He’s probably going to be better at 1400 [metres].”

Teetan is the only jockey apart from eight-time Hong Kong champion Zac Purton [713 wins] on the current jockey roster to have 300 Happy Valley wins or more.

“I was lucky to pick up the ride – on his [Storm Rider’s] last run, he was always a good ride in this race with no weight,” Teetan said. “Thanks to David and the owner for giving me the opportunity. He had a good run through from that draw [barrier one] and it’s nice to get 300 wins at Happy Valley – how good.”

Purton maintained a relentless pursuit of a ninth championship with a treble, striking on Ragnarr (Olympic Glory), Hakka Radiance (Massaat) and Harmony N Blessed (Magnus).

David Hall-trained Ragnarr (135lb) posted his second win in three starts with success in the Class 5 Dongguan Handicap (1200m) under an outstanding Purton ride.

“Pre-race, we knew we were in trouble with the barrier (10), but he just got into a great spot and showed what a great jockey Zac is,” Hall said. “Ragnarr has been in Class 5 for a while and he’s been a bit unlucky not to win a few previously, so it’s great that things are going his way at the moment.”

Harmony N Blessed slotted his tenth win at his 64th start when the nine-year-old fought tenaciously to land the Class 3 The Kwangtung Handicap Cup Handicap (1000m), leaving Hayes with 15 wins for the season and second in the trainer standings behind Mark Newnham (20).

Purton linked with Danny Shum to clinch the Class 4 Shenzhen Handicap (1800m) with Hakka Radiance (123lb), who made it three wins in a row with an emphatic display. Formerly trained by George Boughey in the United Kingdom where he raced as Tempered Soul, Hakka Radiance had 24 winless starts in Hong Kong before embarking on his current streak.

Shum’s Fantastic Fun (Justify) made it two wins in a row when he edged out Samarkand (Mongolian Khan) by a short head to snare the Class 4 Huizhou Handicap (1650m) under Hugh Bowman. Formerly trained by Chris Waller in Australia, where he was unbeaten in two starts as Heads You Lose, the gelding swept to the line powerfully from the midfield.

“He was given a free kick last start with an inside draw and a slow pace and he won well,” Bowman said. “Today, he had an awkward barrier and I was able to fluke a really good spot with a genuine spot and he’s got improvement, too. He’s a big, strong horse with the talent to carry a big weight if he has to.”

Hayes and Shum’s doubles were matched by Douglas Whyte, whose strong affinity with Happy Valley continued.

Whyte’s Hong Kong International Sale graduate Dan Attack (Deep Field) notched his second win under a positive ride from Harry Bentley to land the first section of the Class 4 Foshan Handicap (1200m) before Argento Ocean (D’Argento) scored.

“Last run I thought he [Dan Attack] ran very well – he was a victim of circumstances. Today, he had a tricky draw, but Harry Bentley assessed the situation very well and it wasn't our intention to lead, but he got there comfortably. He dictated the race and the horse kicked on well,” Whyte said.

“He's just a healthy horse and when a horse is in a purple patch like that, they'll give their best and that's exactly what he's doing.”

Whyte sealed a double with Bowman when Argento Ocean (127lb) flew the start before settling third and emerging late for an easy win in the Class 4 The Hong Kong Country Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m).

“He’s shown us a nice bit of promise, he’s been plagued by awkward draws and he still lacks maturity but he’s got an engine and he’s been developed nicely – he made his own luck today – and I think there’s still improvement to come with him mentally,” Bowman said.

Day Day Victory (Deep Field) maintained Michael Chang’s productive streak with victory in the Class 4 Shantou Handicap (1000m) for Alexis Badel, who slotted his 11th win of the season.

“It was a good win and I can feel he’s really improved – mentally and physically, he’s stronger – and he got me out of a difficult situation, there was nothing I could do,” Badel said. “I was trapped in the middle of the field and he needed a turn of foot to win the race and he gave it brilliantly.”

Francis Lui’s Brave Star (Myboycharlie) returned to form with a vengeance with his sixth course and distance triumph in the Class 3 Zhaoqing Handicap (1200m) under Vincent Ho. Winless in nine starts since posting three successive wins at the start of last season, relished the solid tempo from his inside gate to prevail.

Pierre Ng claimed the Class 3 Zhuhai Handicap (1650m) with I Can (Iffraaj) as Luke Ferraris retained second place on the jockeys’ championship with 12 – 17 behind Purton (29).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday night (5 November).
