More Felons (Credit: Racing Photos)

Twenty-five years after Brew (Sir Tristram) delivered him Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) glory, owner Richard Pegum will be hoping history can repeat itself when $41 shot More Felons (Churchill) steps out for Chris Waller in Tuesday’s renewal of the race that stops the nation.

Pegum, who was among Brew’s ownership group when the gelding stormed home from barrier 23 to win the 2000 Cup for Mike Moroney and Kerrin McEvoy, will again be represented by a horse drawn in the same gate. It is a coincidence that has not escaped his attention.

“With Brew, we drew gate 24 and it came into 23. Everyone said, ‘oh what a disaster that is’, but obviously it wasn’t,” Pegum told ANZ News. “Unfortunately I was in England at the time, so I missed it, and I’m in Hong Kong this time, so it seems to be a bit of déjà vu, hopefully.

What's On

“My son, Charles, and my wife Donna will be there and are part of the ownership group, which is good. A lot of those outside barriers have done very well. If you go back historically in the last five or ten years, a lot of the placings have come from the outside barriers, and some of the winners. So I’m not too worried about it.

“We’ve got 800 metres down the straight before we actually turn and go around the corner. So there’s a good chance to get in and not be too far back.”

Like many Cup runners, More Felons’ story stretches across continents. Bred in Ireland by Brian O’Neill, the gelding was first sold to Hamish Macauley Bloodstock for €125,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale before being resold at the Orby Yearling Sale, where Jamie McCalmont secured him for £220,000.

Initially named Scriptwriter, he joined the Aidan O’Brien stable, winning over a mile at his second juvenile start. As a three-year-old, he was sold again at the Tattersalls July Sale for 62,000gns to Mark Adams, who placed him with Milton Harris. There, he was gelded and found early success, winning his first three starts, including the Prestbury Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham.

That’s when Pegum and his long-time friend Paul Henry entered the picture.

“Paul was coming over for Royal Ascot and we go every year,” Pegum recalled. “Paul wanted to have a runner and it was his 50th birthday. So we bought the horse for his birthday.”

Their new acquisition lined up in the Copper Horse Handicap (2816m) at Royal Ascot, finishing seventh behind familiar names, Vauban (Galiway) and Absurde (Fastnet Rock), who he will clash with again at Flemington on Tuesday.

“He was called Scriptwriter when he was in England, and then he ran in a race over there at Royal Ascot, and then we brought him home to Australia,” Pegum said. “But because there was already a horse named Scriptwriter, we had to change the name. Paul owns a brewery in Brisbane and Manly called Felons Brewery. And so he called it More Felons. That’s how he got his name.”

Felons Brewery, it seems, will be the place to be at 3pm on Cup Day.

“If he wins, he’ll shout the bar, I’m sure he’ll do the same with all Felons beer,” Pegum said. “If you go into Felons tomorrow after he wins, there’ll be free beer.”

More Felons will attempt to improve on his midfield finish in the 2023 renewal of the Cup, and his connections believe he is a far more seasoned horse this time around.

“The horse came out here and is a very promising horse. He got second in a Group 1 two years ago, and then after that run, he bowed his tendon, so he was out for 12 months in rehabilitation, and he’s come back really well,” Pegum said.

“We’ve got a great syndicate of people involved. My boys went to Riverview, and all the old boarding parents have got together. It’s called the Riverview Turf Club, and they own 10 per cent of the horse, and there’s 20 members of that, so they all come down from all the different farms all around New South Wales, and they’re all really excited as well. We’ve got a good ownership group and it should be a lot of fun.”

With rain falling in Melbourne on Monday and more predicted for Cup Day, Pegum is unfazed by the prospect of a soft track.

“We’re not too worried about it,” he said. “He is a horse bred in Ireland and they seem to swim over there, so we’re not too concerned about it, no. I don’t think the track’s going to be heavy. Flemington really handles the rain very well.”

Trainer Chris Waller, who won the Cup in 2021 with Verry Elleegant (Zed), shares Pegum’s confidence that More Felons can run a big race.

“His run in the St Leger in Sydney was good. They went too slow,” Waller said via social media on Monday morning. “He was placed in the Tancred Stakes in Sydney just over a year ago, and that was a Group 1, 2400-metre race, so we know he can get the distance.

“We know he’s got the class. He’s ready to peak, so that’s why he can win a Melbourne Cup.

“Obviously, his form has got to be at the absolute best, but we can’t fault him.”

As for Brew, now 31 and happily retired at Living Legends, grazes far from the Flemington roar, Pegum dares to dream that More Felons might rekindle the magic of that unforgettable day 25 years ago.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Crisfords confident Meydaan is ‘spot on’ for Cup

Co-trainers Simon and Ed Crisford are happy with Meydaan (Frankel) ahead of his run in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The Crisfords brought 2023 winner Without A Fight (Teofilo) to contest the race in 2022, where he finished 13th, before his transfer to Anthony and Sam Freedman, and they also prepared West Wind Blows (Teofilo) to a second-place finish behind his former stablemate in the 2023 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). Meydaan finished ninth in this year’s Caulfield Cup behind Half Yours (St Jean) and will again be ridden by James McDonald. Ed Crisford returned to Melbourne on Friday to oversee Meydaan’s final preparations. “The horse is great. He's woken up a bit. He looks fantastic,” he said. “Genuinely, he's really spot on. James has come in and ridden him in a couple of breezes and was very happy with the horse. His condition and weight are good. He's got the 22 spot, that's not ideal, but hopefully on a wet track, being on the outside is better.” Rain may play a role in the outcome, with 40mm forecast on Monday and more possible on Tuesday. “I think he prefers softer ground than firmer ground,” Crisford said. “If it goes heavy…we'll have to see, but if it's soft, I think we'll be OK.” Crisford confirmed the decision to book McDonald came from owner Sheikh Al Maktoum. “The owner always said he wanted a local jockey and he [McDonald] was available,” he said. “We’ll have to leave it up to James now, there’s nothing we can do from that draw.”

Routine key for Melham ahead of Half Yours ride

Jamie Melham is sticking to her routine ahead of Tuesday’s $10 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington, despite the media spotlight that has followed her since her Caulfield Cup triumph on board Half Yours. Melham guided Half Yours to victory in the Caulfield showpiece on October 18, a win that made her the first female jockey to claim the race. She now hopes to become the second woman to win the Melbourne Cup, following Michelle Payne’s historic success in 2015. “There’s a video of all the trainers and jockeys that have won the Melbourne Cup, and the feeling, they don’t know how to put it into words,” Melham said. “That’s what it was like with the Caulfield Cup. All I wanted to do was get off and hug the horse. I was emotional after all that goes into being a jockey over the last ten to 12 years. You always dream of winning a Caulfield Cup or a Melbourne Cup, but you don’t always expect it to happen.” Despite having only a handful of rides since her Caulfield Cup win, Melham has maintained her disciplined preparation. “I rode trackwork this morning. I like to keep things as normal as I can,” she said. “The hardest part is everything else. When you get legged onto the horse, that’s the easiest part and everything sets back into your routine.” Half Yours will jump from barrier eight, a draw Melham described as ideal. “We’ve drawn a lovely barrier, and it makes my job a little bit easier,” she said. “I would love to get as close to the rail as I can, put him to sleep early and I don’t think he will have any problem running this trip out.” Following heavy betting at Monday’s Call of the Card, Half Yours was displaced as favourite by Irish runner Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett), who firmed to $7 ahead of Half Yours at $8.

Lees chases first Cup with Williams runner

Changingoftheguard (Credit: Sportpix)

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees will saddle his first Melbourne Cup runner for Lloyd Williams when Changingoftheguard (Galileo) takes his place in Tuesday’s $10 million feature at Flemington. Williams, the race’s most successful owner, will chase an eighth Cup victory with the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) gelding. The import is one of several horses Lees trains for the prominent owner, who shifted away from using a private trainer several years ago. “Two years ago we were scratched the day before with Cleveland, who got crook on the Sunday,” Lees said. “It's an honour to be training his horses, but to have one in the Cup and those colours is very special. They've got a lot of history behind them and I'm very respectful of the history and very respectful of the team.” While Changingoftheguard is rated a $61 outsider, Lees is confident the seven-year-old can run well after finishing sixth under 60 kilograms in the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). “He just really struggled on what was a ‘gluey’ track at Geelong with 60 kilos,” Lees said. “I'm really pleased with his work. He's had a good foundation, he's been up since June, and I think he's in good order. In a proper run two-mile race with no weight and a good on-speed jockey, I think he'll run a bold race.” Changingoftheguard drops to 53kg in the Cup and will jump from the outside barrier with Tim Clark booked to ride.

Brown set for first Cup ride on Middle Earth

Ethan Brown will make his Melbourne Cup debut on Tuesday when he partners Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) for the Ciaron Maher stable. The 26-year-old notched another major win for Maher last Saturday, guiding Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) to victory in the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) at Randwick, and now gets his first opportunity in Australia’s most famous race. “I'm just privileged that Ciaron has given me the opportunity, Ciaron and a great group of owners who I've had a lot of success with along the way,” Brown told Racing.com. “I'm getting good support, and I'm ready to make the most of that opportunity. At school we would stop to watch the race, so even before I was in racing, it's always sort of been in my life. It's every jockey's dream to ride in the Melbourne Cup so, again, I'm privileged.” Brown rode Middle Earth in his final lead-up, the JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) at The Valley, where the import finished third with 60kg. The six-year-old, a half-brother to fellow Cup runner Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock), was rated around $41 in betting on Monday. “I think he's looking for the 3200 metres,” Brown said. “He gets the blinkers on. He's ready to peak…he'll run really well. If things go his way I've got a lot of confidence, he's a top-eight chance.” Brown’s partner, Celine Gaudray, will also ride in her first Melbourne Cup aboard Torranzino (Tarzino) joining several debutants including Stephane Pasquier (Presage Nocturne), Thore Hammer-Hansen (Flatten The Curve), and John Velazquez (Parchment Party).

Vauban back for third crack at the Melbourne Cup

After two unplaced runs as one of the favoured runners, imported stayer Vauban (Galiway) will line up in Melbourne Cup on Tuesday for the third time, but first under the care of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Now seven, Vauban was purchased by Australian Bloodstock following last year’s Cup and has remained in Australia since. Previously trained in Ireland by Willie Mullins, he finished 14th in 2023 and 11th in 2024, and connections are hoping experience and local conditioning will bring improvement. Bott acknowledged the gelding’s recent form has been mixed, with luckless runs in key lead-ups. Vauban finished fifth in the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) before a below-par 13th in the Caulfield Cup, where he was sent out an $8.50 chance. “His run in the Caulfield Cup was disappointing,” Bott told Racing.com. “I don't think he ever looked entirely comfortable around Caulfield which can happen in their first attempt there, and the style in which it was run and the way it unfolded probably didn't suit him, so I think we can forgive him for that. He can be a little bit inconsistent in his form, but his good form is capable enough of being very competitive. And he seems in good shape.” Forecast rain could aid Vauban’s prospects, with Bott confident softer conditions will play to his strengths. “I think that will enhance his chances,” he said. “He's got some good soft track form, heavy track form, so I think now as an older horse as well for those Europeans any sort of little bit of give in the ground is going to be of benefit to him.”

Parchment Party set for historic Cup bid

Melbourne Cup history is filled with longshots and unlikely triumphs, but few stories rival that of Parchment Party (Constitution), the first American dirt horse to contest the race in its 164-year history. The Pin Oak Stud-bred and raced gelding earned an unexpected berth after winning the Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 3, 16f) at Saratoga in June, a race switched from turf to dirt due to a storm. The owners, unaware of the Cup connection, suddenly found themselves holding a “golden ticket” to Australia’s greatest race. “It wasn’t really taken too seriously at the time,” travelling assistant trainer Jo Robinson told Racing.com. “Once we were given the ticket, it was like, ‘we can go down and put another shrimp on the barbie’ and then it started to become a reality. Once he’s left the barrier gate he will have made history, so while we are going in with no real expectations, just his presence in the race has got all the owners excited.” Robinson, who travelled with Parchment Party from the US via Newmarket before arriving in Australia, said much could have gone wrong along the way. “If at any stage over the past few months had I thought he wasn’t going to get there fully ready, we wouldn’t have continued. But here we are. He’s done everything asked of him and done it really well.” The gelding has never won on turf, but Robinson remains hopeful. “He’s run well on it,” she said. “He was bred as a dirt horse, but he can really stay. A top-ten finish would be a wonderful result. I must admit I have thought about what a win would mean and it would just be so huge.”

Smokin’ Romans gives Anderton another Cup runner

Smokin' Romans (Credit: Racing Photos)

Group 1 winner Smokin’ Romans (Ghibellines) will look to continue breeder Brian Anderton’s proud association with the Melbourne Cup when he lines up in Tuesday’s feature at Flemington. Anderton founded White Robe Lodge in Mosgiel in 1956, a nursery that has produced several Cup performers over the decades. The farm bred 1989 winner Tawrrific (Tawfiq) and raised 1970 victor Baghdad Note. “Tawrrific was reared on the farm and Baghdad Note was born here and they both got the job done, and we bred [2014 third placegetter] Whoshot The Barman and sold him out of the paddock as well,” Anderton said. “The Phantom was a Noble Bijou and he ran second [in 1990 behind Kingston Rule], so we’ve had a bit of success.” Smokin’ Romans is another homegrown product, by White Robe stallion Ghibellines (Shamardal) out of the Yamanin Vital (Sir Tristram) mare Inferno. Sold for $52,500 at the 2018 Karaka sale, the gelding has earned nearly $2.4 million from 11 wins, including the 2022 Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). Now nine, Smokin’ Romans returns to the Cup after wins in last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) and the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) in May. “It’s probably going to be a bit tough for him, he’s a nine-year-old now,” Anderton said. “We’ve taken a lot of pleasure out of watching him over the last few years…They may be a little bit too good for him now, but you never know in a race like this.” Ben Melham will ride from barrier 11 with 53.5kg.

Dolan relishing second Cup opportunity

A year after his stunning Melbourne Cup triumph aboard longshot Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice), jockey Robbie Dolan is grateful to be back at Flemington for another shot at the race that changed his career. This time, the Irish-born rider partners Royal Supremacy (Make Believe) for Ciaron Maher, and the gelding enters the race off a win in the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on October 4. “Last year it was scorching weather, this year it’s raining,” Dolan said. “Last year I came here on a 200-1 pop and was happy to be involved, and now my horse is 25 or 30-1 and I am still just as happy to be involved.” It has been a whirlwind 12 months for Dolan, who has balanced riding commitments with guest appearances and his well-known singing pursuits. He also made a trip home to Ireland to share the Cup moment with his family. “I left there nine years ago with no expectations of ever being involved in the Melbourne Cup so you really have to enjoy it,” he said. “You never know if you’ll get the chance again.” Drawn wide in barrier 21, Royal Supremacy will need to overcome both his gate and the prospect of rain-affected conditions. “He’s a horse that gets keen, he’s got barrier 21 and he hasn’t been tested on wet ground so you have to do the little things right in the early stages in the race,” Dolan said. “From all accounts the horse is going well and if Ciaron Maher is happy, I’m happy. There are some races that not many jockeys get the chance to ride in and I am so honoured to be here.” History is against Royal Supremacy, he will be aiming to become the first horse to do the Metropolitan Handicap / Melbourne Cup double since 1959.

Pride confident Headley Grange can extend winning form in Big Dance

Trainer Joe Pride will chase another major Randwick victory on Tuesday when Headley Grange (Exosphere) lines up in the $3 million Big Dance (1600m). Since joining Pride’s Warwick Farm stable, the son of Exosphere (Lonhro) has been a model of consistency, recording ten wins and six placings from 19 starts, including a last-start victory in the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) over Group 1 winner Gringotts (Per Incanto). “He’s had a three-week gap which is what he had going into his previous run and that seemed to work really well for him, so we haven’t changed anything up,” Pride said. “The step back to the mile is no problem for him and a little bit of wet ground at Randwick, if that hangs around for Tuesday, that would be a positive for him.” Headley Grange has drawn barrier 16 for jockey Adam Hyeronimus but Pride is unfazed by the wide gate. “I don’t think it will matter too much by that stage, we’ll be race five and we’ve had a lot of meetings here lately,” he said. “I can only assume that probably the better ground is going to be out a bit wider so I’m not too worried.” Headley Grange was rated a $5 chance on Monday, sitting on the second line of betting behind Gringotts at $3.30.

Dilmi grateful for Big Dance chance with Aix En Provence

New trainer Nacim Dilmi is pinching himself after earning a start in Tuesday’s $3 million Big Dance at Randwick with Aix En Provence (Shalaa) just three months after taking over the Domeland team. The 38-year-old spent eight years with Godolphin before succeeding Sara Ryan earlier this year, and fittingly, it’s the same race that first put Ryan in the spotlight with Attractable’s (I Am Invincible) win in 2023. “I pinch myself, I’ve been here three months and it’s been about two months where I’ve had my own runners,” Dilmi told Racing NSW. “I didn’t think I’d have a winner in the first month let alone six in the first two months. The horses are running well, I’m happy with where they are at and hopefully things continue.” Aix En Provence was Dilmi’s first winner in August at Gosford, with the Big Dance coming into play only after the gelding’s Bathurst Cup (1800m) success in September. “Originally when I targeted the Bathurst Cup it wasn’t the plan to run there just to have a run in the Big Dance. It was a suitable race for the horse,” he said. “He tries very hard, he’s in good form and he’s trained on well.” Drawn wide in barrier 20, Aix En Provence will be ridden by Dean Yendall. “Unfortunately the barrier hasn’t gone with us and it was hard to find a light rider,” Dilmi said. “Not that I wanted barrier 20 but he’s the type of horse that goes forward and you don’t want him blocked and cluttered for a run. The horse is in good form, it’ll be tough but we might as well give it a try.”

Widdup secures Collett for Ruby Flyer in Big Dance

Brad Widdup is hoping a late jockey switch can help him claim Tuesday’s $3 million Big Dance at Randwick with Ruby Flyer (Flying Artie). Hawkesbury’s leading trainer secured Jason Collett for his first Big Dance runner after Dylan Gibbons, who qualified the gelding by winning the Goulburn Cup (1400m) in August, opted to ride Lord Of Biscay (Lope De Vega) for Kris Lees. “Things fell in our favour as Jason didn’t have a booking in the Big Dance,” Widdup told Racing NSW. “He has ridden for me before, and was runner-up on Icebath as a three-year-old at Randwick.” Ruby Flyer has since been consistent, finishing second over the Randwick mile on October 25 and boasting a strong record at the track, including a heavy-track win over the same course last year. “Ruby Flyer is in terrific order,” Widdup said. “I’m really happy with him. He is proven at the Randwick mile and I’m looking forward to him running well.” The gelding was rated a $51 chance on TAB markets on Monday and is one of four provincial representatives in the field, alongside Lees-trained pair Lord Of Biscay and Tavi Time (Tavistock), and Aix En Provence for Wyong’s Nacim Dilmi.

The Odyssey given WFA shot

The Odyssey (Credit: Race Images)

Trainers Ben and Ryan Foote will raise the bar with The Odyssey (Zacinto) at Ellerslie on Tuesday, with the in-form gelding set to contest the Balmerino Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). The son of Zacinto (Dansili) and Group 1 winner Macavelli Miss (Vettori) steps out of handicap grade into weight-for-age company, a move prompted by his strong recent form. After resuming with a third at Tauranga, The Odyssey carried 59 kilograms to a last-start win over 1600 metres at Ellerslie. “He obviously likes Ellerslie, and he’s come through his first two races so well,” Ben Foote said. “He was going to have to have another start before the Counties Cup anyway.” The six-year-old finished fourth in last year’s Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) before running third in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). However, Foote said the stable could shift targets if Tuesday’s performance proves he measures up at a higher level. “I guess if he shows he’s up to weight-for-age level then we may have to rethink the Cups’ races and think more of the Zabeel Classic,” he said. “If he can perform well against the likes of El Vencedor in particular, then it could sway us to go another way. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Drawn barrier two, The Odyssey will again be ridden by regular jockey Courtney Barnes. “I can’t fault him, he’s cleaning his feed up and he’s just so bright and happy,” Foote said. “We’ve been patient with him and always knew he was going to get better as he got older…his mum won a Group 1 as a six-year-old.”

Future focus for progressive Aksil

Trainers Katrina and Simon Alexander will test promising colt Aksil (Ace High) over 1400 metres at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Purchased as a yearling, Aksil impressed through four trial outings before making a winning debut over 1300 metres at Taupo last month. “As a yearling and all the way through his education, he’s always impressed us,” Katrina Alexander said. “The way he put it all together at Taupo was a very good effort …he sustained a bump and got himself out of trouble to let down beautifully.” The Te Awamutu-based trainers have resisted early-season pressure with the colt, instead targeting the back half of the campaign. “We’ve been determined to be patient, we see him as an after-Christmas horse and the second half of the season,” Alexander said. Aksil has opened favourite for Tuesday’s open three-year-old contest. “It makes it quite interesting tomorrow with some of those three-year-olds not going around in the Sarten,” Alexander said. “We’re looking for a good, educational run and to get a line on him, especially with which distance would suit going forward.” With Masa Hashizume riding in Australia, Joe Doyle takes the mount. “It’ll be a learning curve for Joe riding him for the first time,” Alexander said.

Dalton targets more Wingatui success on Cup day

Tralee Bay (Credit: Race Images)

Jo-Anne Dalton will look to extend a memorable run of form at Wingatui when Sestina (Lonhro) and Tralee Bay (Russian Revolution) return to the track on Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup Day program. Dalton celebrated a career milestone at the venue in mid-October when the pair combined to give her a double and her 100th training success. “I knew it was coming up so it was a relief to get it out of the way so early in the season,” Dalton said. “I am very fortunate to have owners who are great supporters and good friends of Brendan Lindsay. When there are horses they’re not carrying on with up there, we get the pick of, and getting nice horses from Cambridge is such a bonus.” Dalton, who juggles training with part-time work at Meridian Energy, runs a small, hands-on operation with her husband. “We have a couple of people help at the track but do most of the work ourselves, so it’s really rewarding,” she said. Sestina was formerly with Cambridge Stud’s Lance Noble and resumes in the Open Handicap (1400m) after a strong fresh run in similar company. “She’s very well,” Dalton said. “It’s a slight worry [with the firmer track] that they might go too quick for her. She’s more of a miler to 2000-metre horse, but we are limited in options over a mile. It’s a massive assistance having Tina [Comignaghi] on, she runs so well for her.” Stablemate Tralee Bay steps up for the Rating 75 (1600m) contest after his Rating 65 win. “He’s come through it really well,” Dalton said. “He’s a lot more settled in his attitude this year and that’s coming through in his racing.” Dalton also introduces Venetian (Castelvecchio) in The Ned Maiden (1400m). “She’s a lovely wee horse and I quite like her,” Dalton said. “We’re still learning about her and I’m sure anything she does tomorrow, she’ll improve from.”

174 for Shamardal

Late Darley stallion Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) was supplied his 174th individual stakes winner when the John and Thady Gosden-trained Shader (4 g ex Shutter Speed by Dansili) landed Monday’s Floodlit Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Kempton. Ridden by Colin Keane, the gelding brushed his rivals aside, surging clear to beat 2023 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up West Wind Blows (Teofilo) by a comprehensive nine lengths. Bred and raced by Juddmonte, Shader is out of Musidora Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) winner Shutter Speed (Dansili) and this is the same family as three-time Australian Group 1 winner Foreteller (Dansili). Shamardal died in 2020.

Cat amongst the pigeons

Swiss Prince (Credit: Race Images)

ANZ News

A postponed James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) was supposed to clarify the future puzzle of Riccarton’s New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), scheduled for Saturday, November 15.

Instead, a last-start maiden winner, Swiss Prince (El Roca), has put the cat among the pigeons but considering the race is in some danger of losing its Group 1 status, the extra spice is welcome.

Unbeaten filly Well Written (Written Tycoon) is currently the favourite for the feature but the six lengths winner of the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) has not (yet) been nominated for the Classic.

Courtesy of his strong win in Saturday’s Sarten Memorial, Swiss Prince is now second favourite with another filly, Tajana (Darci Brahma) on the third line. Sharing the fourth line are Romanoff (Belardo) and He Who Dares (Snitzel) who were third and fourth respectively in the Sarten. The first four home were a class above the rest.

Yet another filly, To Cap It All (Capitalist), who, like Swiss Prince is trained by Stephen Marsh, looked the winner of Sarten at the 200 metres. She has been nominated but is unlikely to make the trip south for either Guineas. Hot trainer Marsh is gung-ho of Swiss Prince’s chances in the 2000 Guineas but has doubts that To Cap It All can see out the 1600 metres.

Despite To Cap It All’s absence, next Saturday’s New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) looks decidedly stronger, underlining the heady decision to switch the two races. Previously, the 2000 Guineas was run prior to the fillies’ race. The industry will be hoping that the leading fillies will back up and bolster the quality of a race which is lacking the necessary quality.

For the second year in succession the Labour Day running of the Sarten Memorial had to be delayed. In 2024 the race was pushed back two days and held at Te Aroha where Savaglee (Savabeel) scored comfortably in his preliminary to his easy win in the 2024 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas. No doubt Stephen Marsh will be hoping for a similar result with Swiss Prince who will enjoy the benefit of a 14 day rest whereas Savaglee was allowed just nine days.

Swiss Prince’s stablemate To Cap It All had a clear lead at the 200 metres and not a lot was happening behind her, however, Joe Doyle, who was aboard the gelding, found a gap and got to work along the fence. Near the filly’s hind quarters they launched and flew along the rail for a comprehensive win by a widening three-quarters of a length. The time was very good at 1:22.27 on a firmer track, not seen in the north for some time.

A trial winner at the back end of last season, Swiss Prince took five starts to break his maiden, at Ellerslie the same day that Well Written was so impressive in the Soliloquy Stakes. Clearly he has improved since then. Whether he can match Well Written will only be learned when and if they meet.

A neat bay by El Roca (Fastnet Rock), Swiss Prince was, at $130,000, the third most expensive of the El Rocas offered in either Book 1 or Book 2 of NZB’s 2024 Karaka Yearling Sale. Interestingly, competitive filly Lollapalooza (El Roca), currently second favourite for the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas, graduated from the same Book 2 sale. They are two of 12 stakes winners for El Roca who sits second on the 2025-26 NZ Sires’ Premiership.

Swiss Prince is one of three winners from his unraced dam Phoenix (Swiss Ace) making him a Westbury Stud special. Phoenix’s half-sister Exceptionally (Ekraar) was a good stayer in Melbourne, taking out the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m). His third dam ranks as a three-quarter sister to AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Victory Prince (Imperial Prince).

The best performer in the family is Burst (Marauding), the Champion Australian 2YO of her year whose seven wins (five as a juvenile) included the 1992 2YO Triple Crown, headed by the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Burst’s dam and Swiss Prince’s third dam are half-sisters as well as granddaughters of a New Zealand mare named Blooming (Summertime). Blooming’s dam Frances (Bulandshar) was one of the best mares of her time and bagged the 1948 Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 2m), one of her ten wins.

Frances has left quite a legacy as 58 individual stakes winners can be traced directly to her. Seven are elite Group 1 winners including the 2024 Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Private Life (Written Tycoon), Frances his seventh dam. Old timers will know this family as the Bruce Lowe number 27 Fireside family.

Volatile premiership

The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) and its $7 million first prize shot Windsor Park Stud sire Shamexpress (O’Reilly) to the top of the Australian listing, but not for long. Within two weeks he has been guzzumped by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) whose Autumn Glow landed the rich Golden Eagle (1500m).

Prior to Saturday’s big-money races The Autumn Sun sat sixth but a $5.6 million pay day jumped him all the way to the top of the tree. Another to benefit is Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (Street Cry) who sat tenth on Friday but now jumps up to fifth courtesy of a $2.8 million boost. Most of that was due to Jimmysstar and a big win in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m).

The Autumn Sun (Credit: Arrowfield)

It’s just as well Jimmysstar has two Group 1 wins to his name but the Australian pattern race committee needs to get its act together regarding these rich races as they continue to attract top class fields, the Balding Stakes almost a replica of The Everest. The latter, rightly, has been promoted to Group 1 status.

Jimmysstar looked great. Angled off the rail at the 300 metres, he chased down the pacemaker and had the lead at the 150 metres but to the line nothing was making any impression and he strode away by two and three-quarter lengths for one of his easiest career wins which now total ten and earnings of more than $6 million – not bad for a home-bred who started his racing in an Otaki maiden in December 2022.

Sadly, his dam Anniesstar is no longer with us but she did foal a brother to Jimmysstar in 2023. Named In’kantosstar, he has yet to race or even trial. Jimmysstar’s sister, Group 3 Charms Star, is now in Australia. She was exported in 2024, covered by Proisir (Choisir).

Also contributing to Per Incanto’s leap was Evaporate who finished a rousing third in the Golden Eagle, adding a healthy $1 million to his account for a total of $2.77 million. While no match for champion Autumn Glow, Evaporate has an excellent chance of enhancing his already top class record. Twice Group 1-placed, look to a Group 1 win before the season is out.

Coolmore connection

At Flemington, future stallion Tentyris (Street Boss) exploded onto the racing scene with a magnificent victory over a top field of three-year-old sprinters in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Although Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) had the crowd gasping at her demolition of the Empire Rose Stake (Gr 1, 1600m) field, earlier on the program Tentyris caused the same crowd to be amazed at his electrifying sprint from the 250 metres after sharing last at the crossing. In the space of 50 metres he jumped out of the ground and took the lead. Over the final 200m he dashed away and made it look oh so easy, scoring by two and quarter lengths in a slashing 1:08.1. He was cruising at the line.

His burgeoning race record combined with a beautiful pedigree, Tentyris will be highly marketable as a stallion when he retires, echoed by his owners Godolphin. Let’s hope that does not take place too soon so that we, the racing public, can enjoy the thrill of watching him. He is the epitome of exciting. The 2026 Everest and a clash with Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) perhaps?

Tentyris (Credit: Racing Photos)

His four starts at two brought victories in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and at Listed level but an injury to his near hind leg forced connections to abandon a Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) attempt. This season, three starts have yielded the Gothic Stakes (Listed, 1200m) prior to his stunning Coolmore Stud Stakes and a record of four wins and two placings in seven starts, banking $1.97 million.

He is by Street Boss (Street Cry), sire of 83 stakes winners (11 Group 1 winners) including champion Anamoe. His dam is an Exceed And Excel (Danehill) daughter of the outstanding mare Divine Madonna (Hurricane Sky) whose eight wins included four of the best at Group 1 level.

I know what you are thinking. Why is Kiwi Chronicles allocating precious space to an Australian-bred star? It’s because his roots are in New Zealand. Yes, Tentyris, his granddam Divine Madonna and close relatives, Group 1 siblings Baraqiel (Snitzel) and Autumn Angel (The Autumn Sun) all descend from a mare bred in New Zealand in 1965.

Countess Wynyard (Pakistan II) represented the second crop of the freak stallion Pakistan II (Palestine) who stood so successfully at Fairdale Stud in Manawatu. In nine seasons Pakistan II achieved a remarkable 13.2 per cent ratio of stakes winners to runners but died way too early. His influence at the time was dramatic but his blood lives on.

Countess Wynyard was one of Pakistan II’s 43 stakes winners and among her nine wins were three as a juvenile including Adelaide’s Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 4½f). Her older brother Sir Wynyard (Summertime) landed 22 wins including the Sandown Cup (Gr 2, 12f).

As a producer, Countess Wynyard foaled Group 3 winner Count Wynyard (Chamozzle) and his sister Blonde Dancer (Chamozzle) is the granddam of Divine Madonna. Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner in 2024, Autumn Angel and 2025 Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Baraqiel can claim Divine Madonna’ s half-sister Pieta (Prego) as their granddam. Three closely related Group 1 winners in the last 18 months suggests that this family is one of the warmer ones.
