In an incredible achievement from horse, jockey and trainers, the rise of Half Yours (St Jean) hit a meteoric peak on Tuesday when he became only the 13th horse in history to complete both the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) double.

Providing trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy and his rider Jamie Melham with a first win in the Cup, Half Yours' continued upward trajectory has been one of the stories of the season to date and was capped off with success in Tuesday's $10 million.

What's On

“Unbelievable. Wow, what a horse,” Calvin McEvoy said. “He's continued to raise the bar; I've got no words. It's been amazing, it's been such a big team effort. What an amazing horse. Unbelievable.”

Calvin’s father Tony also cut an emotional figure post-race and said: “What a joy, what a joy. This is our great race. It's so special to win it.

“Incredible moment. From the days we grow up, the Melbourne Cup was everything. It's been a great race for the McEvoy family, Kerrin winning it three times. My brother Phllip owned a horse that ran second in it and now for me to be able to win, for us to be able to win it, it's just amazing.”

Having been something of a slow burner during the first four years of his life, including not making his debut until his three-year-old year, finishing second in a maiden at Camperdown in January, 2024, Half Yours has made giant strides this preparation.

Scoring a maiden stakes victory at the first attempt when landing the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m) back in July, the gelding returned as a five-year-old with a fifth-placed finish in a Benchmark 100 (1500m) at Rosehill on August 30.

Stepped back up to stakes grade, Half Yours was ridden by Jamie Melham for the first time in his career when the pair routed their rivals in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield on September 20.

A gallant fourth in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) – where he was beaten less than three lengths – would follow, setting the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trainee up perfectly for last month’s Caulfield Cup.

Sent off the hot $2.50 favourite that day, Half Yours proved much the best with a cosy half-length success over River Of Stars (Sea The Stars), leaving Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup as the obvious next goal.

Tuesday’s $9 starting price for Half Yours was one much larger than for his victory at Caulfield and, may in part, have been due to the fact he was yet to run over a trip further than the 2400 metres of his last-start win.

However, distance would prove to be no barrier on Tuesday.

As long-time leader Land Legend (Galileo) – who had scooted clear of the field at one stage – weakened rapidly moving into the final 800 metres, Melham weaved her way through the field and moved up to challenge the new leader Goodie Two Shoes (Fastnet Rock).

Melham and Half Yours battled well against the Joseph O’Brien-trained runner-up inside the final 400 metres and, having hit the front with 200 metres left to race, careered away for a dominant 2.8 lengths success.

Having been bred and raced by the late Col McKenna, Half Yours was picked up for $305,000 during last year’s Inglis November (Late) Online Sale when part of the Halo Racing Unreserved Reduction Sale.

Inglis Digital business manager Nick Melmeth said of Half Yours’ victory: “I’m so pleased for all the owners of Half Yours, Tony and Calvin and Damon [Gabbedy], what an unbelievable result for them and an unbelievable result for Inglis Digital.

“We’re eternally grateful to Janice McKenna for offering the Halo Racing draft on Inglis Digital last year after Colin’s sad passing and I’m sure Col was looking down at Flemington today and riding the race with Jamie.

“It’s a proud day for Inglis Digital. Our platform continues to go from strength to strength and the success of graduates on the track in recent times has been nothing short of extraordinary and to now have claim to a Melbourne Cup winner is amazing.’’

However, Tony McEvoy admitted that he felt the price of $305,000 may have been too much at the time.

“I was trying to get them to stop because I thought it was enough money. They pushed hard to keep going and we had no owner for him," McEvoy said.

“We spec-ed him and wow, what a good decision that was that day. The journey that he has had us on; to be able to do what we've wanted to do to get him to this race. He's a very special horse.

“If Calvin wasn't so expensive to keep, I might have kept a share myself. There is great people in him and these people are friends of ours. They are friends for life and we've won the great race - it's amazing.”

Having been bred by McKenna and first trained by Ciaron Maher, Half Yours is out of Desert King (Danehill) mare La Gazelle, who was owned and raced by McKenna and his wife Janice.

"Colin McKenna and Janice bred the horse and the way they do things, they have a farm down at Warrnambool and they don't push their horses," Tony McEvoy said of Half Yours.

"He was in the big system at CMR and I knew Col wouldn't put pressure on Ciaron [Maher] to push him as a young horse.

"We basically got a young four-year-old, I suppose, no miles on the clock, plenty of raw ability and something to work with."

For Melham, she was making her own special slice of history by becoming just the second female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, and the first to complete the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double.

“What just happened? Oh my god!” an ecstatic Melham said.

“This is what we do it for. This is why we get up out of bed every morning at 4am, work our arses for the last 15 years I've been in this industry. It's tough. It's not all glorious and perfect as everyone can see sometimes.

“I've had an amazing year. Got married, had some really great days on the track but nothing ever, ever compares to this feeling right now that I'm feeling.”

The rider, who recently married fellow jockey Ben Melham, joined Michelle Payne in winning the Melbourne Cup, with the latter having scored success aboard Prince Of Penzance (Pentire) a decade ago.

“It's been long enough, ten years, I had to do it sooner or later, hopefully, you don't dream of this day because you think about it, you don't think you're actually going to win the Melbourne Cup, all week I've been thinking about it, been excited but no feeling can describe what I felt just then, what I'm still feeling," Melham added.

“I'm absolutely speechless. Mum and Dad have brought out the tears again, I'd just stopped crying…. this is why we do it, for days like this, to go down in history, winning the Melbourne Cup, what the hell just happened?”

Melham said she felt the race played out exactly how she wanted it to.

“Perfect. You play out the race in your head twenty, thirty times how you want the race to happen," she said.

“I wanted to get to the rails as close as I could but we got in a nice enough spot and Ben told me, let that first wave go, that's exactly what I did, I cut through, there was a gap this big next to him and I was going to yell at him but my horse was just going too good anyway, he pulled me through the next gap, pulled me through the next gap where there was barely any room, but when a horse is going that well they just take you where you need to go.”

Melham also had a special mention for Col McKenna and for her grandfather who sadly died last week.

“We've got Col up there, him and Janice bred this horse. They've done an incredible job with him, obviously” she added.

“I have to mention my grandpa. He died last week. The last thing he watched was the Caulfield Cup but he was such a big supporter of mine. He was up there opening those gaps for me, because I needed a few gaps opened. My mum and dad are here. They've put up with all my shit for the last 15 years.”

Melham was also quick to thank the McEvoys, with whom she has built up a great relationship throughout her career.

“They're another incredible supporter of mine," she added. "They've been there for me since I was a 15-year-old kid and continue to this day to be there for me and support me. They deserve this so much. I just won the Melbourne Cup!"

Meanwhile, the tributes continued as Tony McEvoy, who was associated with three Melbourne Cup winners when based at Lindsay Park with the Hayes family, said: "You don't get anywhere without opportunity, and I was part of that great Hayes family for so many years, and three Melbourne Cups.

"But I never thought I would be standing here with one of my own. It's incredibly special. It's a hard game and you don't win all the time in this game.

"To have Cal [Calvin McEvoy] with the passion to do what I want to do, it's made my life a hell of a lot easier and more joyous and what this horse has done will take us to another level, and we're certainly looking forward to it.

"Before Cal came on board, I think I was perceived as a speed, two-year-old filly's trainer and Cal has been associated with that.

"What that has done has given us an unbalanced string. We haven't been able to go out and buy the big European horses.

"I'm hoping this Caulfield Cup and this Melbourne Cup will change people's mindset on that and we can get involved in some of these European stayers now.

"I love training stayers. I've trained a Grand National Steeple winner. We get a great joy out of training stayers. Speed is speed and you put them out there and away they go, but with stayers there is a bit more work, a bit more finesse and I think this is the horse to show that we can manage a stayer and we'd love more of them."

Half Yours is the only stakes and sole Group 1 winner by his sire St Jean, an imported son of Darley’s Teofilo (Galileo), who began his career in Europe before heading to Australia and New Zealand where he landed the City Of Auckland Cup (Gr 3, 2400m).

St Jean’s fee was raised to $11,000 (inc GST) this season off the back of the success of Half Yours.

Beaten jockey’s comments:

Wayne Lordan (Goodie Two Shoes, second): “Ran a wonderful race, got a nice position from my draw and she’s run a cracker. Just one better today but ran great.”

Ethan Brown (Middle Earth, third): “He ran great. This is obviously his trip, he showed his true colours today, he’s going to be a much better horse next prep, that’ll toughen him up, but he couldn’t have run much better.”

Beau Mertens (River Of Stars, fourth): “She was fantastic. Slow tempo didn’t suit her but when Land Legend took off, it really made her relax and in a comfortable position. She travelled in really well, probably didn’t have the sprint like the others but she sustained a good gallop through the line. Very proud of her.”

Celine Gaudray (Torranzino, fifth): “Couldn’t be more happier with the run that we got. He was a bit on the bridle throughout, but he had a really tough finish.

Blake Shinn (Vauban, sixth): “He ran super. Big turnaround from the Caulfield Cup. Hit the line well but the winner and the other horse had a bit better turn-of-foot. Very proud of the horse.”

Mark Zahra (Al Riffa, seventh): “It was ok. I was four-wide and had to find a spot to get in and there was too much to do with that weight.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Absurde, eighth): “He ran well. The pace wasn’t that strong through the first part, had to give them a start. He picked up into it well, good honest run.”

Tim Clark (Changingoftheguard, ninth): “I thought he ran really well. Just when Land Legend went around, we were in a position where we had to cart the field up, which probably cost him running a few placings closer up.”

James McDonald (Meydaan, tenth): “He ran well. Got into a lovely spot, switched off well but probably just found the 3200 a fraction far.”

Michael Dee (Furthur, 11th): “He’s very inexperienced still, he was a touch slow out, travelled very, very strong. We were getting knocked about the first time past the post but travelled strong, held up a nice gallop all the way to the line but his first half he’s just raced a little bit ungenerously.”

Rachel King (Arapaho, 12th): “Really brave. He hasn’t had the best set up coming into today, but honest as ever.”

Thore Hammer-Hansen (Flatten The Curve, 13th): “I found myself a lot further back than ideal, but he still ran a good race considering. Just probably went too quick early doors.”

Ben Melham (Smokin' Romans, 14th): “He ran well, the old bugger. He’s just had a prep where he’s probably been running on firm ground. He’s got a bit soft ground and he’s just a bit over it. Proud of him anyway.”

Robbie Dolan (Royal Supremacy, 15th): “The wide barrier wasn’t in his aid today, once I couldn’t get cover on him, he straight away he just over-raced into the first bend, I had to flow with him to get him to relax and it just told late.”

Harry Coffey (Onesmoothoperator, dead-heat for 16th): “He had a lovely run but when the pressure came at the six hundred, he failed to quicken, the wheels were spinning on the soft going.”

Jye McNeil (Valiant King, dead-heat for 16th): “They found their spots quickly inside me; I wasn’t able to give him every chance today; he had to do it too tough three-wide facing the breeze. Initially I had cover from Land Legend but when he went, I was stranded.”

Tommy Berry (More Felons, 18th): “It was a very muddling run race, and it made it sort of hard to move into it early enough from where we were and he battled on ok.”

Stephane Pasquier (Presage Nocturne, 19th): “A bit disappointed because he was favoured in the odds.”

John Velazquez (Parchment Party, 20th): Declined to comment.

Declan Bates (Athabascan, 21st): “Disappointing. We got deleted early and it sort of put us further back earlier than we wanted. He just hasn’t quite finished off as we would have liked.”

Joao Moreira (Land Legend, 22nd): “No manners, pushed too hard. He did a lot of things wrong in the race.”

Damian Lane (Chevalier Rose, 23rd): “Disappointing. Unfortunately, didn’t race to his best today.”

Craig Williams (Buckaroo, 24th): “It was a shame we didn’t get to see Buckaroo at his best. We know how good a horse he is, but in today’s race he was not far away from the eventual winner, but he was three-wide on the back and basically put himself out of the race when they went slow.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Private Harry to miss the rest of the spring

Yulong have revealed that their Group 1-winning sprinter Private Harry (Harry Angel) will not run again this spring and instead will head for a period of rest and recuperation after veterinary examination revealed bone bruising in his left forelimb. The four-year-old entire is expected to make a full recovery and trainer Nathan Doyle will look at a possible campaign in the autumn. “Whilst it’s disappointing not to see him on a racecourse again this spring, we’re thankful that the team at Randwick Equine were able to identify the root issue," Yulong's chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said. “He’s obviously been uncomfortable and not performing like the horse we know he is, but it goes to show how important it is to listen to them. We’ll put a line through those past two runs, give him some time out and focus on next year." Having been unbeaten in his first five starts, including when landing The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), Private Harry has finished fifth in both starts this campaign - The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) and the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Nine for Ghaiyyath

Different Gravy (Credit: Racing Photos)

Darley’s second-season sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) registered his ninth individual stakes winner on Tuesday when Different Gravy (3 g ex Venerated by Medaglia D'Oro) landed the TAB Trophy (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington. Ridden by the in-form Mark Zahra, the Henry Dwyer-trained gelding came with a blistering outside run from last, and crossed the line a two-length winner over Brave Danza (Brave Smash), with Obvious (Toronado) just 0.2 lengths further back in third. Bred and raced by Korey McCormick, Different Gravy is the first foal out of unraced Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Venerated, who was purchased by McCormick for $6,000 from Godolphin via Inglis Digital in July 2020. The mare is herself out of a half-sister to the Group 2-placed stakes winner Federal (Medaglia D'Oro). The sire of Saturday’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Observer, Ghaiyyath did not return to Darley’s Northwood Park base for 2025 having shuttled there from Kildangan Stud for four previous seasons, standing at a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) throughout his time in Australia. The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €20,000 (approx. AU$35,270).

Melbourne Classic plan for Different Gravy

Following Different Gravy’s victory in the TAB Trophy on Tuesday, Henry Dwyer said the gelding would now be aimed at the inaugural $400,000 Melbourne Classic (2000m) at Caulfield on November 29. "It is incredibly hard as a small stable to have runners let alone winners at this time of year,” said Dwyer. “We've got 45 in work and we've got three runners for the week. The first two have run second and first, the other is later on in the week. Incredibly proud of the team, and the owner of this horse Korey McCormick who bred this horse. He's been involved from day one and is a devotee of the game. He loves it so I'm very pleased with him. We had the choice of going on a Derby path with him but we were just holding him back a bit. They've got a new race at Caulfield in three weeks - a 2000-metre race worth $400,000. We thought he wasn't mentally ready and you saw that today when he wanted to be a bit keen. I think we've given him the right lead-up for a race like that. A great win today and probably should have won last time. Korey bought the mare about five years ago. Vin Cox advised him to go to [sire] Ghaiyyath - Vin Cox advised him all the way through. He caught a plane from Brisbane to Melbourne and then a train to Swan Hill to watch his maiden two starts ago. I got him [the horse] two years ago when he was a short-legged dumpy little thing but his pedigree is great.”

29 for Too Darn Hot

Darley shuttle sire Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) recorded his 29th individual stakes winner when Tornado Valley (2 c ex Oklahoma Girl by Fastnet Rock) struck in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington, the opening race on Melbourne Cup Day. Trained by Ciaron Maher, the colt was backing up from a third placing in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on October 15 and quickened well under Ethan Brown to assume the lead at the 200 metres before holding off the fast-finishing Tales Of Time (Pinatubo) by 0.4 lengths. Luna Vega (Lucky Vega) finished another 1.5 lengths back in third. Ben Melham, rider of Tales Of Time, protested for interference in the middle stages of the 1000-metre event but stewards dismissed the objection. Bred by Rosemont Stud, Tornado Valley was a $300,000 purchase for owners Bennett Racing at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the fifth foal and only winner out of Group 1-placed Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Oklahoma Girl, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sure Knee (Snitzel). Now the sire of 12 stakes winners in the southern hemisphere, Too Darn Hot is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $275,000 (inc GST), up from $44,000 when last available in 2023.

Gold Coast on the agenda for Tornado Valley

Tornado Valley (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ciaron Maher was thrilled to see Tornado Valley have more luck at start number two and hinted that a trip to the Gold Coast could be on the cards for the $300,000 Magic Millions purchase.

"It was just like a barrier trial, really," Maher said of the colt’s Debutant run. "I thought he was a bit sleepy out of the gates, wobbled at the turn and was very good late. This colt is very well-bred and he's got a bright future. Magic Millions is hard to pass up and he is progressive. [They're] nice options to have."

The $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) will be run on the Gold Coast on January 11.

Ethan Brown, who took over from Mark Zahra aboard Tornado Valley at Flemington, was full of praise for the colt.

"It's a great feeling,” said Brown. “I was on a horse who was presented very well. He took a lot of improvement from his first up run, raced like an ultimate professional today, and had a good look at the crowd.

“He won with quite a bit of authority then. Gonna make a lovely three-year-old.

“He probably hit the front a bit soon, but I just had to use him just to get out in clear running.

“He's very responsive, he had a good look at the crowd, and he won with a bit in hand. He was just very green his first-up run, and it's a sign of a good horse.

“He's taken the right improvement. You can see he's pulled up so well, Nathan Bennett and the team, Ciaron Maher, they've got a nice horse on their hands. Ciaron assured me he'd taken a lot of improvement and he was dead right.”

222 for Exceed And Excel

Retired Darley stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) registered his 222nd individual stakes winner on Tuesday when Godolphin homebred Burma Star (3 c ex Gongs by Dawn Approach) took out the Amanda Elliott (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. Ridden by Joao Moreira for trainer Chris Waller, the three-year-old colt flashed home to win the Listed event by 0.1 lengths over Tagline (Tagaloa), with Ripley (Too Darn Hot) another 1.2 lengths back in third. Now a two-time winner from seven starts, Burma Star is the second foal and second winner out of the Group 2-placed Dawn Approach (New Approach) mare Gongs, a daughter of stakes winner Belcentra (Bel Esprit). Exceed and Excel was retired from stallion duties last year.

Kingswood holds tough to land Kirin Ichiban Plate

Kingswood (Credit: Sportpix)

The Gavin Bedggood-trained import Kingswood (6 h Roaring Lion – All At Sea by Sea The Stars) got back to winning ways at Flemington on Tuesday, taking out the Kirin Ichiban Plate (Listed, 1800m) in gritty style under John Allen. The flashy grey entire was last seen finishing eighth when second-up in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) and looked more comfortable on the Soft 5 surface, striding out for a 0.4-length win over the Ciaron Maher-trained favourite Saint George, who completed the quinella for the pair’s late sire Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy). Shaiyhar (Camelot) finished another two lengths back in third. It was a second stakes win for Kingswood, whose last victory had come in the Coongy Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at The Valley last October.

Dance To The Boom lands first Group win

Well-bred mare Dance To The Boom (4 m Exceedance – Bim Bam Boom by I Am Invincible) added a maiden Group win to her CV when she took out a dramatic edition of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Tuesday. The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old was involved in an incident after the 200-metre mark where She’s Got Pizzazz (Zoustar) clipped heels attempting to take a gap, causing jockey Blake Shinn a suspected broken leg after falling. Dance To The Boom didn’t lose any momentum, powering on to a 0.3-length victory under Kerrin McEvoy from Roll On High (Shamus Award). Too Darn Hot mare Jenni The Fox finished another 0.8 lengths back in third. It was the mare’s third straight victory and adds to her Listed win in the Gosford Guineas (Listed, 1200m) last December. “She's a mare that's in really good form,” McEvoy said. “We were able to offset that wide gate and went forward, I knew Jamie [Melham, aboard Fancify] would take me across. I was able just to slide in behind her, it was three wide with cover, and I knew then, once I got her relaxed that she'd finish off and that's exactly what she showed me.” Dance To The Boom was a $250,000 Magic Millions purchase from Rosemont Stud for Jo Lindsay and runs in the Cambridge Stud colours. Bred by Rosemont Stud, she is the first foal out of unraced I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mare Bim Bam Boom, an unraced half-sister to Group 1 winner Albany Reunion and Group 1-placed stakes-winner Fast Dragon, both by Fastnet Rock (Danehill). The mare produced a brother to Dance To The Boom this spring.

Cup campaign on the cards for Litzdeel after Heritage win

Queensland owner-breeder Paul Lanskey celebrated another Melbourne Cup Day triumph when Litzdeel (Dundeel) stormed home to win the Australian Heritage Cup (2800m) at Flemington. Ridden by Craig Williams for trainer Danny O’Brien, the daughter of Dundeel (High Chaparral) defeated Don Diego De Vega (Lope De Vega) by 3.5 lengths, with Farag (Sacred Falls) another 2.5 lengths back in third. It was a familiar feeling for Lanskey, who six years ago stood in the same spot after Litzdeel’s half-brother Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War) captured the 2019 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Litzdeel’s dominant victory had connections daring to dream of a 2026 Melbourne Cup campaign. “It's a great thrill winning any race on Melbourne Cup Day,” Lanskey told Racing.com. “She’s not a big four-year-old mare. She’s a November foal. Danny said let’s not push it too hard this spring. Next year will be the time. Blake Shinn rode her at Caulfield and said she has a lot of upside as well.” The win came with mixed emotions following the recent passing of Geblitzt (Testa Rossa) – the dam of Litzdeel and Vow And Declare. “She did a terrific job. She had nine foals for seven winners,” Lanskey said. Two of Geblitzt’s progeny are yet to race: a three-year-old filly by Too Darn Hot named Kissattack and a yearling filly by Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice).

Shinn taken to hospital following Flemington fall

Top jockey Blake Shinn was taken to hospital with a suspected broken left leg following a fall in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes at Flemington. Shinn came down from She’s Got Pizzazz in the straight when the mare was tightened between runners. After hitting the turf, he appeared to be struck by two following horses before medical teams reached him quickly on track. Racing Victoria officials confirmed Shinn was conscious and receiving treatment from paramedics before being transported to hospital for further assessment. Shinn had been booked to ride Just A Journey (Justify) in Thursday’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m). She’s Got Pizzazz returned to the stables at Flemington and was examined by veterinarians as a precaution.

Hickmott Family celebrates another Melbourne Cup Day success

The Hickmott family added another chapter to its Melbourne Cup Day history on Tuesday when Party Crasher (Ocean Park) won the Benchmark 80 (2000m) at Flemington. While Robert Hickmott trained Cup winners Green Moon (Montjeu) (2012) and Almandin (Monsun) (2016), this time the spotlight fell on his son Josh, who part-owns Party Crasher, and Robert’s younger brother Michael, who trains the gelding. “It’s been a lucky day for the family,” Josh Hickmott told Racing.com. Josh, who works as a bloodstock manager for Michael, had his first Cup Day experience in 2012 when Green Moon triumphed. “This is on par with anything I’ve had to do in racing. I know it’s Benchmark 80 but it’s such a great ownership group,” he said. There were some anxious moments with the pre-race forecast, with the horse having endured a string of abandoned starts. “He’s actually been to the races ten times and he’s had three races abandoned,” Hickmott said. “Twice in the Queensland Derby, one because of the weather and the other time he was kicked behind the gates, then at Morphettville the other day the meeting was abandoned due to thunder and lightning.” Hickmott helped source Party Crasher in New Zealand and believes the horse has more to come. “It’s been a whirlwind ever since. I think his record shows he’s a horse on the up,” he said.

Air Assault takes John Letts Cup

Justify (Scat Daddy) gelding Air Assault (5 g ex Elegant Eagle by Zabeel) continued his excellent form at Morphettville on Tuesday when he bolted in to land back-to-back victories in the John Letts Cup (Listed, 1800m). The last-start Gawler Cup (1500m) winner dismissed last year’s John Letts third Sir Kingsford (Sir Prancealot) by 6.6 lengths going away, while Pudding (Tavistock) finished another 2.5 lengths back in third. Trained by Andrew Gluyas, the Group 1-placed Air Assault took his record to seven stakes wins from 32 starts, among them a win in the Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) as a juvenile.

Gringotts spearheads Maher trifecta in Big Dance

Gringotts (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ciaron Maher further underlined his dominance of Sydney’s richest mile when Gringotts (Per Incanto) led home a stable trifecta in Tuesday’s $3 million Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick, 12 months after producing the quinella in the same race.

In a near carbon copy of 2024, Gringotts ($3 favourite) again proved too strong for stablemate Vivy Air (Hellbent), this time by 1.2 lengths, with the front-running Lugh (Snitzel) holding on for third a further 0.8 lengths away.

The win capped a patient training effort from Maher, who had originally set Gringotts for the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) before a setback altered plans.

“We knew he was qualified for the Big Dance so that was always a race that was at the back of our minds,” assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said.

“But the King Charles was his main target. He had a couple of setbacks, a couple of bad bloods. Physically, the horse was always fine, but we didn’t want to risk him, and we got rewarded today.

“It’s a nice back-up option and that’s why we were never, ever worried. Even though we would’ve liked to get him to the King Charles, this is a lovely race to win.”

Carrying topweight of 62 kilograms, Gringotts was given a perfect trail by Nash Rawiller, who said he was confident after partnering the gelding to second in the Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at his previous start.

“You can tell he’s a serious horse…when I let him rip, he was quite exciting,” Rawiller said. “I always felt like the winner and just the little idiosyncrasies I learned from the other day we were able to put into place today, and the horse was really explosive.”

Vivy Air and Lugh are among nominations for Saturday’s $2 million Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill, with Gerard-Dubord confirming both are under consideration to back up.

Meanwhile, the cream also rose to the top in the $750,000 Little Dance (1600m), where Chris Waller’s Osipenko (Pierro) carried topweight to victory over Hollywood Hero (Sacred Falls) by 0.3 lengths.

Stable representative Zane Jones said it was a satisfying consolation for the Group 1 performer, who narrowly missed a Big Dance start. “He raced in it a few years ago and was very competitive so that looks the logical progression,” Jones said, confirming a likely tilt at The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange later this month.

24 for Playing God

Playin'it Sweet (Credit: Racing WA)

Playin’it Sweet (3 f ex Sweet Ora by Oratorio) became the 24th individual stakes winner for Playing God (Blackfriars) when landing the Burgess Queen Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Ascot on Tuesday. Ridden by Lucy Fiore for trainer Adam Durrant, the three-year-old filly scored her fifth win from eight starts as she defeated Talkanco (I’m All The Talk) by 0.2 lengths. There was a further length back to the third-placed Pure Excess (Exceedance). Out of the winning Oratorio (Stravinsky) mare Sweet Ora, Playin’it Sweet is a half-sister to winners Fire The Guard (Safeguard) and Sweet Eyes (Bondi). Playing God is standing at Darling View Thoroughbreds for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

El Vencedor storms back to form

El Vencedor (Credit: Race Images)

Trainer Stephen Marsh breathed a sigh of relief at Ellerslie on Tuesday as reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year El Vencedor (7 g Shocking – Strictly Maternal by O'Reilly) returned to form with a dominant win in the Balmerino Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m).

The gelding was a standout last season, capturing three consecutive Group 1 races before an unplaced run in Hong Kong’s QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). His spring campaign had been steady without success, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m), and punters rallied behind him as a $1.50 favourite to rediscover his best.

Under regular rider Wiremu Pinn, El Vencedor began sharply and settled behind Sagunto (O’Reilly), who set a solid tempo. Pinn bided his time before unleashing the gelding’s trademark turn of foot, powering clear to score by 2.4 lengths over Diamond Jak (Jakkalberry), with Sharp ‘N’ Smart (Redwood) another 0.7 lengths behind in third.

“I was bloody nervous before that race,” Marsh admitted. “There’s the expectation and you just hope such a horse is back to his best. I thought Wiremu rode him beautifully, he didn’t panic, and the race panned out how we thought. I’m very relieved.

“I’m very proud of the horse, it’s great to see him back at his best. Wiremu gets on really well with him and deserves that win, he helps us out a lot.”

Looking ahead, Marsh said the seven-year-old would follow a similar summer campaign to last year’s season.

“It’s a pretty easy path to follow,” he said. “We might end up down at the TAB Mile [Gr 1, 1600m] and then come back up for the Zabeel Classic [Gr 1, 2000m]. Those big summer 2000-metre races are where he’ll be.”

Classic locked in for Affirmative Action

Matamata trainer Pam Gerard will bid for her second consecutive New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) title at Riccarton next week, but admits the pressure is mounting after Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) stamped himself as the leading contender with victory at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Gerard, who claimed last year’s edition with standout colt Savaglee (Savabeel), watched on nervously as her gelding fought off a determined Faultless (Tivaci) to win the Show By SkyCity 3YO (1400m), shortening into $3.80 favouritism for the Guineas. Ridden by George Rooke, Affirmative Action began cleanly and sat outside the leader before challenging at the 300 metres. He was made to dig deep in the final stages but found enough to score by 0.3 lengths, a performance Gerard said will bring him on perfectly ahead of next week’s Group 1. “He didn’t do it easy today, so there’s still plenty of improvement,” Gerard said. “It hasn’t been an easy road, it’s been nearly six weeks since he last raced, so it was a good effort from the horse.” While relieved with the win, Gerard confessed that the favourite’s tag heading into Riccarton has only added to the tension. “I’m pretty relieved, really, and now nervous for the next one,” she said. “George is very confident, and that makes me even more nervous.” Gerard described Affirmative Action as the polar opposite of last year’s winner Savaglee. “Savaglee was very nippy and full of character; this fella’s quite the sleepy lion, you never quite know what’s going to come out,” she said. “He’s a true professional when it counts. If he can jump out and relax, he can be anywhere in the run, but I still think he’s a better chaser. Hopefully he handles the Riccarton atmosphere.”

Golden Wings hands sisters a first win

Sisters Sophia Nolan and Hanna Orting celebrated a milestone moment at Ellerslie on Tuesday when talented gelding Golden Wings (Super Seth) delivered their first victory as a training partnership. The four-year-old, out of Group 1-winning mare Xanadu (Elusive City), had promised plenty with three trial wins and two runner-up finishes from as many starts, and he broke through decisively over 1200 metres, powering home to score by 4.5 lengths over Navy Ensign (U S Navy Flag). “We are very pleased,” Nolan said. “We thought he was ready today and he delivered. George [Rooke] rated him perfectly, he relaxed, and it all worked out. It was a pretty smart performance and I think he’ll keep improving. We’ll probably see the best from him over 1400 metres and a mile.” For the Swedish-born sisters who have long dreamed of training together, the win was particularly special. “It all worked out today,” Nolan said. “We’ve been working closely together for a long time, so it made sense to form a partnership. It’s something we’ve really wanted to do.” The sisters are also preparing a 19-strong Lilywhites Lodge draft for next week’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale at Karaka. “We’ve got a lovely group: a couple of Satono Aladdins with plenty of upside, a Per Incanto out of Quick Choice, and a beautiful Proisir colt,” Nolan said. Their Earthlight (Shamardal) gelding (Lot 146) clocked the fastest breeze-up of their draft, stopping the clock at 10.62 seconds over 200 metres. “He’s a ready-made racehorse, very mature and professional,” Nolan said.

Cup Day a party for Andertons at Wingatui

Brian and Shane Anderton enjoyed a banner Melbourne Cup Day at Wingatui, producing three winners and three quinellas, headlined by Inflamed’s (Ghibellines) sharp front-running display in the Grand Casino Open Handicap (1400m). With Donovan Cooper claiming three kilograms, Inflamed bounced straight to the front and never looked back, coasting to a 2.5-length victory over stablemate Capo Dell Impero (Ghibellines). “She was a lot sharper today,” said Shane Anderton. “We put the blinkers back on, and she showed a lot of speed. Capo was amazing for a nine-year-old and hit the line strong.” The local stable also struck in the Rating 75 (1200m) with No Party (Proisir) defeating Move On (Ghibellines), and in the Rating 65 (1400m) where Afire (Ghibellines) held off Southern Country (Tavistock). “You can’t complain with three winners – three quinellas is even better,” Anderton said. “It keeps you enthused.” No Party impressed again second-up, while Move On fought bravely after racing wide. “He’s really matured this year,” Anderton said of the winner. “She [Move On] was tough too.” Afire, a sister to Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) 14th Smokin’ Romans, added sentiment to the day, winning by 2.5 lengths for Kylie Williams. “The blinkers really switched her on,” Anderton said. “Southern Country was good too, he’ll have a fun season.”

HK: Doyle begins Hong Kong stint with seven rides at Happy Valley

One of world racing’s leading female riders, Hollie Doyle, will begin her short-term contract in Hong Kong on Wednesday night at Happy Valley, where she takes seven rides across the nine-race fixture. Doyle, 29, has five Hong Kong wins. She began riding in 2013, and since then has won ten Group 1 races before becoming the UK’s most successful female jockey by surpassing Hayley Turner with a 1,023rd British winner at Ascot in May, 2025. Doyle has participated five times in Happy Valley’s International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC), finishing second twice and third once. Doyle’s licence in Hong Kong runs until December 23, encompassing the Hong Kong International Races on December 14. Doyle links with Ever Smart (Merchant Navy), Roman Crown (Mehmas), Lightning Arrow (Starspangledbanner), Run Run Smart (Dandy Man), Inno Century (Darci Brahma), Young Arrow (Showtime) and Victory Sky (U S Navy Flag) at the city circuit tomorrow night. “I’ve been very lucky to have been invited to the IJC previously, so I’ve had a good taste of Hong Kong racing,” Doyle said. “You have to adapt very quickly to the different jurisdictions. I’m lucky to have travelled the world and got used to doing that now, but obviously it’s always very different here in Hong Kong – it’s tactical, it’s tight and sharp. Our season has finished in England. November and December are quiet enough back home, so it’s the time of year I have been going away for the last few years, and it’s worked out quite well,” Doyle said. “I have a seven-week contract, and I am looking forward to being here for a little bit longer. I did a few routine canters on a few of my runners for tomorrow. I have seven rides with support from a range of trainers, which is quite nice to see and hopefully I can get some good results."

US: Carl Spackler joins Lane’s End Farm roster

Multiple US Grade 1 winner Carl Spackler (Lope De Vega) has retired from racing and will stand at Lane's End Farm in 2026. The son of Lope De Vega (Shamardal) initially raced for e Five Racing, for whom he landed the Maker's Mark Mile (Gr 1, 8f), Coolmore Turf Mile (Gr 1, 8f), and Fourstardave Handicap (Gr 1, 8f) before being purchased by Zhang Yuesheng's Yulong earlier this year. He was trained by Chad Brown until this spring, before then moving to Ciaron Maher. Bill Farish of Lane's End said: "Lope De Vega has been a dominant force in racing since he was named European champion first-crop sire and has made a global impact. Carl Spackler had such an impressive turn of foot, consistently performing at an elite level, and with his sire line, he brings exciting diversity to the Lane's End roster." Carl Spackler was bred by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock out of the Grade 2-winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Zindaya, a half-sister to Grade 1 scorer Western Aristocrat (Mr Greeley). Zindaya is also the dam of the Group 3-placed Sandtrap, also by Lope De Vega. A fee will be announced in due course.

UK: Whitsbury Manor Stud unveils 2026 roster

Whitsbury Manor Stud has announced its roster for 2026 and the team is topped by Havana Grey (Havana Gold), who will again stand for a private fee. The sire of Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) and Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Vandeek, who is currently shuttling to Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST), Havana Grey is responsible for 15 individual black-type two-year-olds this year, all conceived from a fee of just £6,000. Whitsbury Manor stalwart Showcasing (Oasis Dream) has had his fee trimmed to £30,000 (approx. AU$60,360) (from £35,000 this year). The sire of 149 individual stakes performers, Showcasing's 2025 tally was headed by Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) victor Qirat, while his broodmare sire record includes this season's Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) heroine Lake Victoria (Frankel) and Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) runner-up Ain't Nobody (Sands Of Mali). The 18-year-old's yearlings sold for up to 240,000gns (approx. AU$507,060) this year. Elite Status (Havana Grey) joins the roster for 2026 and has been introduced to breeders at £8,000 (approx. AU$16,100). A Group winner at two and three, the four-year-old was rated superior to both his sire and grandsire, boasting a Racing Post Rating of 119. He remains Havana Grey’s highest-rated performer. Dragon Symbol (Cable Bay) will remain at £8,000 after covering full books of over 140 mares in 2024 and 2025. His first foals head to the sales in the coming weeks. Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy), set to be crowned leading second-season sire, will also stand at an unchanged fee of £8,000. His season has been headlined by Group 1-winning sprinter Arizona Blaze and Harry’s Half Million (6f) scorer Song Of The Clyde.

Amo fends off fierce competition to secure Ted Noffey's dam for $6.2 million

Streak Of Luck (Credit: Fasig-Tipton Photo)

Fresh from making huge investments at yearling sales, Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing USA made headlines once again when it purchased Streak Of Luck (Old Fashioned), the dam of undefeated Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) winner Ted Noffey (Into Mischief), for a sale-topping US$6.2 million (approx. AU$9.55 million) at Monday night’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky.

Streak Of Luck, a stakes-winning daughter of Old Fashioned (Unbridled’s Song), was sold in foal to Taylor Made’s sire sensation Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) and was one of the final lots through the ring. She was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, for longtime client Marie Jones, the breeder of Ted Noffey.

The ten-year-old was supplemented for the sale in mid-October, following Ted Noffey’s triumph in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Keeneland. The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) then tightened his grip on champion juvenile honours on Friday with an accomplished performance at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar.

Ben McElroy was tasked with bidding for Amo Racing and he dug deep to fight off fierce competition from Ace Stud’s Paul Curran.

"We had to wait around, and I kind of knew who was waiting around; it was going to be extremely strong," McElroy told Bloodhorse.com

"She was probably the elite mare that came in here with all the momentum. She's got the champion two-year-old colt, or champion-elect [Ted Noffey], Kentucky Derby future favourite. He's a great-looking horse; he's unbeaten.

"Kia [Joorabchian] wanted this one. She'll go to Archie St George's farm, Brookstone Farm, to foal her out."

Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) winner Shisospicy (Mitole) will stay in training next year after Morplay Racing’s bought out the mare’s co-owner Qatar Racing for US$5.2 million (approx. AU$8.01 million).

The daughter of Mitole (Eskendereya) has enjoyed an almost flawless year with her only defeat in five starts coming when finishing down the field in the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot.

Despite missing out on the top lot, the Raging Torrent Syndicate did not leave the sale empty handed with the UK-based operation shelling out US$5 million (approx. AU$7.7 million) for the reigning Broodmare of the Year, Puca (Big Brown).

Entered for the sale by John Stewart’s Resolute Bloodstock, who bought the now 13-year-old by Big Brown (Boundary) for US$2.9 million at Keeneland in 2023, Puca is the dam of Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner Mage (Good Magic) and Dornoch (Good Magic), winner of the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) and Haskell Stakes (Gr 1, 9f), as well as Pennsylvania Derby (Gr 1, 9f) scorer Baeza (McKinzie).

The mare is not in foal after producing a Good Magic (Curlin) sister to Mage and Dornoch on May 5.

Raging Torrent Syndicate’s Paul Curran, who is also bloodstock and racing manager at Newmarket-based Ace Stud, said Puca would kept in America to support Lane’s End Farm resident Raging Torrent (Maximus Mischief), who raced in Zhang’s bottle green and white silks at the backend of his career, or the operation’s multiple Grade 1 winner Carl Spackler (Lope De Vega), who it was revealed on Monday would join the Land’s End Farm roster for 2026.

Meanwhile, fresh from celebrating a famous Breeders’ Cup victory with their brilliant homebred Forever Young (Real Steel), Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm made their presence felt at the sale, finishing as the leading buyer after landing six mares for US$14.9 million (approx. AU$22.95 million).

Just F Y I (Justify), the champion juvenile filly of 2023, was the most expensive of the sextet at US$4.5 million (approx. AU$6.93 million). Offered by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, the four-year-old daughter of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) is believed to be carrying her first foal by leading sire Into Mischief.

The one-session sale again produced impressive results. A total of 138 horses sold for an aggregate of US$102,027,000 (approx. AU$157.16 million), with 27 selling for US$1 million (approx. AU$1.54 million) or more. The average finished at US$739,326 (approx. AU$1.13 million), a 35 per cent increase year-on-year, while the median improved to US$300,000 (approx. AU$462,120), up 20 points on 2024. The clearance rate was 77 per cent.
