Riverstone Lodge will chase a memorable first Flemington winner on Saturday when their promising colt Blandford Baron (Extreme Warrior) lines up in the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) on Champions Day.

Trained at Morphettville by Travis Doudle, the colt heads across the border after an eye-catching debut second and a tough maiden win, performances that convinced connections he was ready for a crack at better company.

“Travis has done a great job with him to get him to the races nice and early,” Riverstone co-founder Nick Taylor told ANZ News. “First-up over 900 metres he just got beaten by a pretty smart one, then at his second start he was pretty short in the market and things didn’t quite go to plan.

“He took off early and followed the second favourite, and given the times they ran, he did a really good job to stick on. He was probably entitled to feel the pinch late, but he managed to get the job done.”

Doudle had earmarked the Inglis Banner for Blandford Baron early in his preparation, and Taylor said the colt’s progress has justified the ambition.

“Travis picked this race out some time ago if the colt handled his prep, and he’s done everything right,” Taylor said. “To carry our silks at Flemington for the first time is a big thrill for us, being a new farm.

What's On

Jamie Mott takes the ride on the $14 chance, who has drawn barrier two in the 11-horse field.

“Travis couldn’t have him any better. He’s drawn a good gate, he’s got plenty of early speed and race fitness, and I think he’ll take up the running. Obviously, it’s an unknown going up the straight for the first time and there’s a bit of rain around, but he’s fit, ready and well educated. I think he’ll run a really nice race.”

Bred by Barham Racing, Blandford Baron was purchased by Riverstone Lodge and Suman Hedge Bloodstock for $80,000 from the Peppertree Farm draft at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. The colt was later secured by Doudle and Hedge for $100,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

By Rosemont Stud’s first-season sire Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice), Blandford Baron is the first foal out of the winning Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Yangarra Rose, herself a daughter of Group 3 winner Vibrant Rouge (Written Tycoon) and a half-sister to Group 1 winner Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun).

Taylor said Riverstone were always keen to stay in the colt, who impressed them with his physicality and movement from day one.

“He was such a nice style of horse with a great action and presence,” he said. “Being out of a Zoustar mare, he had a lot of that Zoustar look about him.

“The market’s been tricky, and we don’t tend to stay in too many pinhooks, but with him we really believed. Travis and Suman came to us at Classic, and we were happy to team up and stay involved. He was one of only two horses we stayed in all year,  the other being Gimcrak Stakes winner Shiki, and so far it’s worked out pretty well.”

Away from the racetrack, Riverstone have made another major move this year, welcoming Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) winner Starlust (Zoustar) as their inaugural stallion for the 2025 breeding season.

“He’s settled in really well,” Taylor said. “He’s put on great condition, he’s a good-looking horse and he’s had fantastic support from the kind of breeders you want early on – people who consistently produce racehorses off their farms.

“He’s covering a nice book, he’s a really good horse in the shed, fertile, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. We couldn’t be happier with how he’s been received.”

As Riverstone continues its rapid rise, Taylor credits teamwork and shared ambition as the key drivers of their early success.

“It’s a big team effort,” he said. “My business partners Alex and Billy, and Suman, we all work closely together and everyone has an opinion. The staff on the farm are fantastic, everyone contributes.

“We’ve had a bit of luck early on, but we’re doing the right things and working hard. Hopefully that luck keeps coming our way.”

Coeur Volante to be offered in Inglis Digital Spring Boutique Sale

Coeur Volante (Credit: Racing Photos)

Three-time Group winner Coeur Volante (Proisir) will be offered in a special Inglis Digital Spring Boutique Sale next week. The five-year-old mare won three of her first four starts including twice in black type races, the Scarborough Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m). Her most recent win came in the Mannerism Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) over the same course and distance earlier this year where she ran out a four lengths winner. From just 16 career starts to her name, she has managed four victories and is being offered as a racing and breeding prospect. “During the spring of her three-year-old season, she was electric and while the mile at Caulfield didn’t play to her strengths, it was only Joliestar, Kimochi and Skybird that finished in front of her when she was fourth in the Thousand Guineas,’’ Inglis’ Victorian bloodstock manager James Price said. “She has tremendous tactical speed and a potent turn of foot, as we saw when she won the Mannerism earlier in the year. I don’t think there is any doubt that she has Group 1 ability, so whether she is bred this season or races on for the autumn and is bred next year, she is a very, very appealing prospect.’’ The Spring Boutique Sale catalogue went live on the Inglis Digital website at 4pm on Friday. Bidding will open at 9am on Monday and close from 4pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, November 12. To view the catalogue, arrange finance or participate in the auction click here.

Wet track could prove a barrier for Tentyris

Last-start Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tentyris (Street Boss) is not certain to take his place in Saturday’s VRC Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, with the colt’s trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman keeping an eye on the weather. The father-and-son training duo have admitted that their stud-bound three-year-old is unlikely to run if the track gets into the heavy range, something that will not be known until the meeting gets underway. The Melbourne Bureau of Meteorology is predicting between ten and 30mm of rain to fall at Flemington on Saturday, on top of a potential six millimetres falling overnight on Friday. "He's had a really smooth week," Sam Freedman said. "He's a tough horse at the peak of his fitness and I think he'll have a good race in him on Saturday, but we're just worried about the rain. If it got to heavy, we'd have to have a chat about it. If it presents as a Good 4, he'll be fronting up, but rain would be the only deterrent."

Rain and draw no concern for team Via Sistina

Chris Waller and James McDonald have no concerns about both the likelihood of wet weather and the barrier draw for Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) as the champion mare bids for a second success in the VRC Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington. The dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner registered a 2.8 lengths victory in the 2024 renewal of this weekend’s contest and, despite the ground almost certainly being softer this time around, her trainer is not worried about the weather forecasts. "The one time she failed on a wet track was at Flemington [in the Makybe Diva], but it was the day we had all that hail," Waller said. "A good form analysis person said to me, that if you go back and look at her replay, her lane had hail, ice, and James [McDonald] said on the day that she never did get comfortable and couldn't quicken in it. I think that rules out that run and therefore she's handled it every other time without any problems. She's a very fit horse and runs well fresh, whether it's the first run of the prep, or the last. We haven't complicated things, we've kept her happy, making sure she hasn't put on weight, and the stiffer the competition the better. We've seen that this preparation with the only real test coming in the Cox Plate when she came out on top. Her two runs prior to that weren't as stiff because they went at a very sedate tempo. Hopefully there's a bit of speed on. Flemington, over 2000 metres, they get rolling and it should play into her hands." Via Sistina has drawn barrier ten in the 11-runner field, but rider McDonald has revealed he is not concerned either. "I'd rather there than [barrier] one to be fair,” he told Racing.com. “She's a class horse.”

Mr Brightside bidding for more history

Lindsay Park’s stable star Mr Brightside (Bullbars) will bid to make history on Saturday when he attempts to become the first horse since 1995 to land consecutive renewals of the VRC Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. A model of consistency once again this year, the now eight-year-old gelding has won the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and run second in both the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in three outings this season, priming him for a repeat success this weekend. The last horse to do the double was Seascay (Maizcay) in 1994 and 1995, who had been trained by David Hayes prior to those victories – where he was then prepared by David’s brother Peter Hayes. "He was a very good horse, understated, consistent at the top level," David Hayes, the father of Mr Brightside’s trainers Ben, JD and Will, told Racing.com. "I think I would describe him as a poor man's Brightside. I think Brightside, his consistency at the Group 1 level is as good as you can see, ten or 11 Group 1s and placed in another 12. I don't think you could compare them, even though Seascay had a good record, Brightside's got a great record." As for Mr Brightside’s condition heading into this weekend’s Group 1, JD Hayes said: "He's all guns blazing. Hopefully the rain keeps coming."

First Melbourne start for Ceolwulf

The Joe Pride-trained Ceolwulf (Tavistock) will have his first start in Melbourne as he bids to land Flemington’s VRC Champions Mile. Pride had been considering the Champions Stakes for his three-time Group 1 scorer, but has decided to take on the mile considering the former option means he would be tackling champion mare Via Sistina. The five-year-old son of Tavistock (Montjeu) landed the King Charles III Stakes last time out, where he defeated the re-opposing Mr Brightside by 1.8 lengths. "He is always confident," Pride said. "Horses that need confidence are the ones that are coming back from injury or that have been getting beaten up a lot. He's quite an arrogant horse. There was no crisis of confidence there. I can't believe I haven't travelled him. He's had twenty-odd starts, and he has never been away. He's going to have his first trip away from home which will be good seasoning and experience for him and I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully we get a bit of wet ground for him as well, which will be perfect.”

Von Hauke to get another Group 1 crack

Von Hauke (Credit: Racing Photos)

Having landed the Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at The Valley last month, the Cliff Brown-trained Von Hauke (Savabeel) will get another chance at Group 1 level this weekend when he lines up in the Champions Mile at Flemington. The six-year-old gelding had been a luckless fourth in the Crystal Mile last year before then going on to finish eighth in the Champions Mile behind Mr Brightside, and his improved result this time around confirmed his place once again in the 1600-metre Group 1. “He deserved it, he really did,” Brown told Racing.com of the Crystal Mile win. “He was very good the other day at The Valley. It’s a harder race again [on Saturday], but he’s in good form. I’ve always thought he was a nice horse. Now is he a Group 1 horse in this company? Maybe not, but he’s never been going better, so we’ll see how we go.” Brown revealed that Von Hauke spent a few days doing some dressage work after The Valley win. “He went off and did dressage for four days. He goes to Mariah Kaminski’s,” he said. “He’s only done it this preparation, and it’s been significant, I think it’s made a big difference. It’s made him concentrate and made him use himself better and think, and I think you can see in his races he’s thinking more. We’re happy with him but it’s going to be a great race, so we’ll see how we run.”

Back-up option employed for Golden Snap

Having missed out on a start in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), Japanese raider Golden Snap (Gold Ship) will line up in Saturday's Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington. The six-year-old grey mare ran 14th in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on her only start in Australia to date, a run that put her out of contention for a start in the Cup, but trainer Katsunori Tanaka always had this weekend's Group 3 as Plan B. "We knew she had to run top eight in the Caulfield Cup to get in the Melbourne Cup, but she didn't, which was very unfortunate and disappointing," Tanaka's Australian representative Kosi Kawakami told Racing.com. "But at the same time, we always had the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in our mind as a back-up. Hopefully we can bring the form back, as we did last year with Warp Speed. She actually hasn't got black type yet on her resume, so it would be nice for her to run top three, ideally win," he said. "She'll be a lot better on Flemington racecourse and 2600 metres will suit her as well. Coming from Melbourne to Japan is a very costly challenge, so it would be nice for them to get some prize-money to cover that cost.”

Rise At Dawn ready for Five Diamonds challenge

Consistent efforts this season have led trainers Ben, JD and Will Hayes to believe that Rise At Dawn (Almanzor) is well on track to landing Saturday’s Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill. The five-year-old gelding has made five starts this campaign and has placed in the Tontonan Stakes (Listed, 1400m), Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and Crystal Mile on his last three outings, with Will Hayes confident the son of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) is all set for this weekend’s $2 million contest. "This was our spring grand final," he said. "It's an incredible race, the Five Diamonds, being restricted to five-year-olds at set weights and penalties. We felt it was the perfect profile, and we think he's going to thrive at the 1800 [metres]. His run in the Doncaster [Mile, fourth] was nothing short of exceptional and that's going to stand him in pretty good stead. The biggest thing we're pleased about is we've drawn tactically a good barrier, and it should play right to his advantage. We think his best runs are when he can bowl and sustain a high speed like he did first-up this spring when he was beaten by Café Millennium [in the Tontonan Stakes]. He didn't quite handle the Valley as well as we hoped [last start in the Crystal Mile]. He crabbed around the bend and he'll be suited to the bigger track."

Tulloch Lodge eyeing up third straight Golden Gift

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will send out two runners in their bid to land a third consecutive running of Saturday's Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill, with Revengeance (Hellbent) and Plagiarism (Written By) taking on the $1 million contest. Tulloch Lodge's North England (Farnan) was successful last year while Shangri La Express (Alabama Express) won in 2023, and Revengeance is preferred of this year's duo after his debut third in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) last month. “The fact he’s coming through a superior form line, he has the race experience now and he’s started to put it all together off we saw in that race, he ticks a lot of boxes,’’ Bott told Racing NSW of Revengeance. “He ran very well in the Breeders' and was probably a touch new, over reactive. He found a bit of interference there late, and he did a good job to pick himself up and finish off the way he did. There’s plenty of raw ability, he’s done well since and gave us plenty of reasons to push on with him.” Meanwhile, Plagiarism is yet to make his racetrack debut but has won and finished second in two trials in recent weeks. “He’s a real jump and run style of horse, plenty of natural speed and brilliance which we’ve seen at the trials,’’ Bott said. “He’s going to need all that to offset the draw [barrier 15] he’s been given but he deserves his chance. He’s looked good in both trials and improved nicely into them. He’s shown a good level of precocity to us so it’s no surprise that he’s lining up.”

Golden opportunity for Anthropoid

Having made an encouraging debut when fourth in the Kirkham Plate (1000m) at Randwick on October 25, Hawkesbury-based trainer Brad Widdup has decided to send Anthropoid (Prague) to Saturday's Golden Gift at Rosehill. The Prague (Redoute’s Choice) colt hit the line well and has an extra 100 metres in this weekend's contest, with Widdup revealing he would consider a trip to Queensland for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in January should he run well. "I wasn't going to push on too much further than the other day, but he didn't get a fair crack at them really, and he was good late," Widdup said. "He is a Magic Millions horse. I don't want to keep thinning out the string, but we will see what happens. We'll get through Saturday and see what sort of prizemoney he earns. If he runs below par, he will have a good break and if he races well, we probably have to freshen him up and think about it. He was a really nice horse at the sales and he looked buyable at a sale that is pretty hard to buy at. He has always been a very straightforward horse, a sensible colt. He will only improve as he gets older and he's ticking over nicely."

Raheen Stud announce death of Top Ranked

Queensland-based Raheen Stud have announced that their exciting young sire Top Ranked (Dark Angel) was euthanized on Thursday following a brief illness. A winner of the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) in Australia, having moved to Annabel Neasham after being purchased for by Australian Bloodstock, Top Ranked had covered over 200 mares in his first two seasons at Raheen and his first yearlings will be offered at sales in 2026. “About five weeks ago he went lame behind and our vet’s advice was to stop covering mares to allow him the chance to rest and recover, but sadly the condition continued to deteriorate,” said Basil Nolan. “On Thursday, we took the tough decision to put him down with the autopsy revealing an issue with his kidneys. We have 20 mares in foal to him and the last mare he covered has also tested in foal.”

Miss Ziggy set for Guineas task

Genuine filly Miss Ziggy (Brazen Beau) ticked a significant box for trainer Andrew Carston during her trouble-free build-up to Saturday’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton. The local hope has spent most of her career competing in strong age group company and delivered an overdue victory two runs back. “I needed to get a win out of the way, and I thought I might have got that before I did, but since she won it has been plain sailing,” Carston said. “I’m very happy with my horse and the one thing I’ve said through this prep is that we haven’t had to do any travelling, we’ve just had to go across the fence.” Most recently on her home Riccarton turf, the daughter of Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) finished fifth in the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and third in the Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) with her maiden win in between times. Miss Ziggy will again be ridden by Kylie Williams, who has the task of overcoming a potentially tricky draw of ten. “The barrier is no help and some of the more favoured fillies from the north have drawn to get pretty soft runs,” Carston said. “I just have to worry about my filly though, and everything has gone to plan so fingers crossed for some luck. I don’t think she will have trouble with the distance and I’ve got her the best she can be, it’s a pleasure to have a filly in a Group 1 at a big carnival for one of my biggest supporters.”

Bosson ruled out of New Zealand Cup Carnival

Opie Bosson (Credit: Race Images)

Champion jockey Opie Bosson will miss all three days of the New Zealand Cup Carnival in Christchurch after a fall at Avondale on Thursday. Bosson rode Karyon (Ferrando) into fourth place in the Avondale Main Street Rating 60 (1200m), but was dislodged after the finish line when his mount abruptly ducked outwards while pulling up. He was stood down for the remainder of the Avondale card and now faces a longer stint on the sidelines. “He went to the doctor this morning and unfortunately didn’t pass his concussion test,” Bosson’s manager Michael Coleman said. “That means an automatic stand-down of 12 days, and he’ll need to pass another test before he gets clearance to resume riding.” Bosson had a strong book of rides for the opening day of the carnival at Riccarton on Saturday, including the impressive last-start Ellerslie winner Belle Cheval (Savabeel), who is the $6 equal-second favourite for the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas. Bosson was also due to ride Captured By Love in the Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes, and Beavertown Boy (Shocking) in the Metropolitan Trophy (Listed, 2600m). “It’s hugely disappointing, especially for a jockey of his calibre, and especially for it to happen now and rule him out of such a great week of racing,” Coleman said. “It’s really bad luck, and I feel for the connections he was going to ride for, such as Te Akau. We thought we had a very good chance in the 1,000 Guineas with Belle Cheval. But it’s the nature of the game. I had a number of setbacks like these myself in my own riding career, and it’s just one of those things that happens. All we can do is hope that he makes a quick recovery, passes that next test and can get back to doing what he does best.”

Force Of Nature chasing sprint feature

Trans-Tasman trainer Andrew Forsman is hoping his stable can feature on both sides of the ditch this weekend. His Cambridge stable will have strong representation at Pukekohe and Tauherenikau on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while his Flemington barn will have a two-pronged attack on Champions Stakes Day at their iconic Melbourne base. Force Of Nature (Savabeel) will lead the charge on the home front at Pukekohe where he will be fresh-up in the Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m). Initially set to be run at Te Rapa, Saturday’s meeting was transferred to Pukekohe following the Hamilton track’s Labour Day meeting abandonment, with the club immediately undertaking renovation work ahead of the busy summer season. The change in venue is the biggest query for Forsman, but he said the Tony Rider-bred and raced gelding has been working well leading into the sprint feature. “We are a little bit disadvantaged that we targeted a race at Te Rapa and now we are at Pukekohe,” Forsman said. “He is a horse that is certainly more comfortable left-handed, that is the only negative, but we can’t really fault his work heading into it.” Forsman will also be represented at the South Auckland venue by last-start winner Rambling On (Almanzor) in the Show By SkyCity 1500 (1500m) and Trust Alone (Preferment) in the TAB 2200 (2200m). “It was a very game win (by Rambling On) last start,” Forsman said. “He hadn’t raced for a couple of months and I thought he was vulnerable fitness-wise late. Trust Alone was a little bit disappointing at Te Aroha the other day. She was another one that had a bit of time between runs. I think she will be the big improver and she should be very competitive on her work.”

Greene excited for emerging stable star’s return

A relentlessly wet spring has provided a frustrating start to the season for David Greene, but things might be turning the corner as the Te Rapa trainer prepares to unleash his emerging star First Five (Almanzor) in Saturday’s Legacy Lodge Sprint at Pukekohe. Greene opened his winning account for 2025-26 when Goldiluxe (Ghibellines) took out the Avondale Main Street Rating 60 (1200m) on Thursday, and now he is excited to see First Five get underway in what could be a career-best season. “Goldiluxe won pretty well at Avondale on Thursday and it was good to see,” Greene said. “It was probably a bit of an overdue win, she’d been racing well and deserved to pick another one up. Now I’m looking forward to seeing First Five kick off on Saturday." First Five will be the only runner this weekend for Greene, who has long held a good opinion of the lightly raced gelding. The son of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) has recorded five wins from a 15-start career to date, including four victories from just ten starts last season – a 1600-metre Rating 75 at Ruakaka on September 7, a 1400-metre Rating 65 at Matamata on December 20, a 1400-metre Rating 75 at Tauranga on February 7, and a 1400-metre Rating 75 at Te Aroha on March 29. “He certainly has the look of a black-type horse in the making, and I’ve thought that for a while,” Greene said. “He had a very good second half of the season last time in and made it through to open class, and he’s really fully matured into himself now. I think he’s in for a big season. This was the race we were keen to have him resume in, and his build-up has gone well leading into Saturday. His work has been very good and I think he’s right where we want him to be.”

Road to Derby for Paris

Road To Paris (Credit: Racing Photos)

Cambridge trainer Roger James is already the most successful trainer in the history of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) with six wins to his credit, and on Thursday he and training partner Robert Wellwood unveiled another Classic-type when Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) swept to victory at Avondale. The three-year-old son of Circus Maximus (Galileo) relished the step up to 1400 metres when winning a maiden at Avondale on Thursday after finishing seventh over 1200 metres on debut at Ellerslie in October. “We said at the end of his two-year-old preparation that we thought he was potentially a Derby horse for next year,” James said. “We weren't disappointed by the first run at all. We thought he might have to go a mile before he broke maiden ranks, but he was quite impressive at Avondale. He ran a good time and won by a good margin and there was quite a margin back to the third horse. He's still feeling his way and he's got a lot of upside. He relaxes beautifully, breathes beautifully and he trotted up this morning nice and free. He surprised us yesterday, very pleasantly, so the Derby is certainly firmly in the back of our minds. He's probably the sort of horse that won't take a lot of runs, but having said that if all goes well, we will step him up to a mile next start at Otaki in the Wellington Stakes on November 30. That gives him a nice break until then, and then he'll progress quietly from there. He’s a quality animal and we are lucky to have him.”

Latta on the Attack in Riccarton features

Lisa Latta is often a force to be reckoned with when she takes her horses to Riccarton for New Zealand Cup Week and hopes this year will be no exception. The Awapuni horsewoman will look to add another Pegasus Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) to her mantelpiece on Saturday, with key hopes in Platinum Attack (Santos) and Connello (Time Test) engaged in the feature races. Platinum Attack has won two of three attempts at the 1000-metre trip, and has run fifth in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) and Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) against the best of the country’s sprinters. Platinum Attack asserted his favouritism with a sharp trial win at Awapuni last month, boosted by the services of leading hoop Craig Grylls. “He has been set for this, he’s just been looking for those better tracks,” Latta said. “Even though they said it was a heavy track at Awapuni, it played way better than that. He has a good turn of foot on a good track, that’s for sure.” As she did last year, Latta intends to back the gelding up in next Saturday’s Lindauer Stewards Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Breeders’ contender Connello is no stranger to the big Riccarton circuit, having travelled down on three separate occasions including for last year’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (1600m), where she finished fifth behind race rival Captured By Love (Written Tycoon). The daughter of Time Test (Dubawi) picked up where she left off this term as a four-year-old, placing in the Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) before a tough trip for fifth last start at Trentham. “She drew wide at Wellington and that track was definitely a bit tricky, and she had a bit of weight to carry there as well. I think she looks well placed here,” Latta said.

HK: Purton banking on Cap Ferrat's untapped potential in Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse

Champion jockey Zac Purton believes the best is yet to come from Cap Ferrat (Snitzel) as he prepares to ride the Francis Lui-trained gelding for the first time in Sunday’s Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin. Remarkably, the sole victory on the five-year-old’s 21-race record (including 13 in Australia for trainer Chris Waller) is the 2025 Hong Kong Derby (2000m), but Purton thinks it’s just a matter of tapping the Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) gelding’s potential. “I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of Cap Ferrat yet,” Purton said. “He’s a horse that, to me, appears as if he hasn’t really committed himself 100 per cent. And if the penny drops one day, I think there’s a little bit more left.” With the Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) approaching on December 14, Sunday’s feature looms as a key trial for several contenders. Purton said drawing barrier 13 doesn’t help Cap Ferrat’s chances, but remains confident of a bold run and hopes he’s found a HKIR mount. “[The draw] is not ideal, especially for a horse like him that can overrace; they want to do a little bit too much if they see daylight for too long. But we’ll work it out. I’m looking for a horse to ride in the Group 1 mile races and hopefully, he’s going to be it,” Purton added.

20 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) sired his 20th individual winner on Thursday when Be Patient (2 c ex Dream To Reality by Australia) scored in a mile novice contest at Newcastle. Ridden by Callum Rodriguez for trainer Ed Bethell, the juvenile colt improved on a debut third placing to beat Glory Of The Seas (Sea The Stars) by a half-length with a further neck back to Norman Invasion (Lope De Vega) in third. Racing in the silks of the Clarendon Thoroughbred Racing Syndicate, Be Patient is the only winner out of the unraced Australia (Galileo) mare Dream To Reality. St Mark’s Basilica is standing at Coolmore Australia for an unchanged fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

33 for Lucky Vega

Insiena (2 c ex Mihrab by Tiznow) became the 33rd individual winner for Yulong stallion Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) when taking out a 1500-metre handicap at Pisa on Thursday.
