The New Zealand Ready To Run Sale has been a lucrative well for Jamie and Chanel Beatson’s Ohukia Lodge and the pair head back to Karaka with a draft of high-class juveniles who are likely to prove popular with the cosmopolitan buying bench assembled for the high-performing auction which begins its two-day run on Wednesday.

Ohukia Lodge’s results speak for themselves, not least given they have recorded the second highest aggregate for the past three editions of the auction. Meanwhile, their graduates include, among others, the Group 1-winning pair Ferrando (Fast 'N' Famous) and Vin De Dance (Roc De Cambes).

Twelve months ago, the operation sold 21 lots for an aggregate of NZ$4.67 million, recording the fourth highest average of $222,381. In the previous year, 22 of their consigned two-year-olds realised NZ$5.133 million at average price of $233,318, the third best figure that year. In 2022, Ohukia Lodge parted with 27 juveniles for gross receipts of NZ$5.027 million and finished the sale with the third best average of $186,204.

This week Ohukia Lodge will present 22 lots by a mixture of proven and young exciting sires in a draft Jamie Beatson describes as ‘having something for everyone’.

What's On

“There are a few in the draft for everyone. There are a few in there that we’ve bred and a few from Waikato Stud who they’ve bred and there are some really nice types in there,” he said.

The pair of breeze-up sessions took place at Te Rapa last month and with timings now carefully scrutinised and analysed by prospective buyers, Beatson must have been relieved to see a fair few of his draft clock smart times in their workout.

The quickest time in the group was delivered by a colt by Newgate Farm-based sire, Capitalist (Written Tycoon). The colt’s time of 10.31 saw him come out best among his peers and was the third best time in the whole sale. The time was only marginally bettered by two colts, one by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) and another by Tassort (Brazen Beau), from the Riversley Park draft.

Ohukia Lodge picked up the Capitalist youngster for $75,000 from Newgate Farm’s Inglis Classic draft earlier this year and Beatson said he was surprised he did not have to pay more for him as a yearling.

He said: “We were a bit shook when he got him as cheaply as we did at $75,000 at the Classic sale. He’s about twice the size as when we bought him and he’s developed into a very nice animal now and looks a picture now.

“He’s a nice big horse who has got a lot of substance to him and has a lovely action on him when he gallops. Everything we’ve done with him has been so straightforward and he put in a very fast breeze and showed a lot of natural ability.”

Catalogued as Lot 152, the colt is out of the Listed-placed winner Terminology (Star Witness), herself a sister to the super fast sprinter Swift Witness.

Timing is everything in this game and a colt by a stallion who can seemingly do nothing wrong at present features among the lots set to be offered by Ohukia Lodge this week.

Lot 365 is a colt from the second southern hemisphere crop of Darley’s shuttle stallion Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), whose son Observer played a starring role when producing a dominant display to win the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) during the opening act of the Melbourne Cup Carnival earlier this month.

However, for Ghaiyyath it has been more than about one horse. His two southern hemisphere crops have yielded ten winners from 32 starters and alongside Observer, the stallion has sired three other stakes winners including the hugely exciting Different Gravy, winner of the TAB Trophy (Listed, 1800m) on Oaks day at Flemington.

One of his self-confessed ‘picks of the sale’, Beatson said the colt, who they bought for $30,000 from Blue Gum Farm at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, was very much made in the mould of his father and shaped like a Classic-type.

“The stallion looks to be a very good stallion, the Derby winner [Observer] looks a different league and this looks like a typical Classic horse and has a good physique to him and a good bit of size to him,” he said.

“He’s a lovely big horse with a big action on him and he’s probably going to be a miler / Derby-type horse. He’s actually one of my picks of the sale. I have a lot of time for him and I think he will be a good racehorse. He’s got the right attitude and lovely, big stride on him.”

Despite being by the world champion son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), who excelled over a trip, the colt seems to have inherited some of his dam’s speed, having clocked a slick 10.68 in his breeze.

He is out of Hampton Classic, a dual 1000-metre winning daughter of Exceed And Excel (Danehill), who is herself a sister to Meydan Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Amber Sky, with the pair being out of the Group 2-scoring sprinter Truly Wicked (Rubiton).

Another to show good speed despite being by a stallion known more for staying prowess was Lot 285, a colt by Armory, a son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), who stands for the Mapperley Stud / Windsor Park axis.

The colt stopped the clock at 10.52.

“This colt is bred by Windsor Park. He’s a really nice-bodied horse and a lovely, natural mover. He’s a decent-sized horse and he’s been pretty natural from the word go and everything has happened quite easily for him,” said Beatson.

The youngster is out of the Listed-winning Golan (Spectrum) mare Cora Lynn, making him a half-brother to the Group 3-placed winner Weona Smartone (Shamexpress).

While Armory was placed second in the Cox Pate (Gr 1, 2040m), he showed precocity as a two-year-year-old. He won three of his first four starts, including the Futurity Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh and the Tyros Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Leopardstown.

He was then tested at the highest level in the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), where he finished second to champion two year-old Pinatubo (Shamardal).

Armory’s seven-start two-year-old season concluded with placings in both the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1600m) and Criterium International (Gr 1, 1400m) in France.

A Classic campaign that commenced with a fourth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and concluded with a runner-up finish in The Valley showpiece resulted in Armory being crowned champion three-year-old in Ireland and joint champion three-year-old in Europe in the intermediate category.

At four, he landed the Huxley Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) at Chester and finished third in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f).

Amory made the perfect start to his second career when his daughter Silhouette made an impressive start at Trentham last month, winning an 900-metre contest by 4.3 lengths. She remains the stallion’s only starter to date.

Vinery’s Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) is another sire doing brilliantly with his first two crops. The son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) was crowned champion first-season sire last year and his 22 winners are spearheaded by five stakes winners, including recent Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ole Dancer.

Ohukia Lodge will offer one of only two lots by the sire at the sale. A $180,000 purchase from the Baramul Stud draft at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale last March, the youngster is out of Group 3-placed winner Statuesquely (Medaglia D’Oro).

Beatson said: “This colt won’t take long at all. I can see him winning a race as a two-year-old. He races quite easily and looks a real natural.

“He looks like a real get-up-and-go sort of horse. He’s very relaxed and nothing seems to faze him, which is a great attitude to have as he goes straight from the sale into someone’s stable and it won’t bother him. It won’t take long before he’s headed to the races I wouldn’t have thought.

“The stallion has had one winner from one runner and she looks a pretty smart filly. He has started on the right track which is pleasing to see.”

Also among Ohukia Lodge’s offering, are a couple of colts by speed influence Cosmic Force (Deep Field) and a son of Hellbent (I Am Invincible), a stallion who was thrust into the spotlight over the weekend when his son Revengeance landed the Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill, while his five-year-old daughter Vivy Air added to her record in the Five Diamonds (1800m) on the same card.

The Hellbent breezed in 10.85, having been bought by Beaston for $120,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

“The Hellbent colt I like, he’s a really nice horse,” he said. “The stallion had a nice juvenile winner on the weekend and that always helps get the sire in the limelight which is always a big help and it just refreshes everyone as to what the stallion can do.

“The two Cosmic Forces are nice horses who have shown good ability and they are both really nice types.”

The Cosmic Force colt out of the stakes-placed winner Aghna (Foxwedge), a $130,000 buy for Ohukia Lodge and Jim Carey at the Inglis Classic sale, stopped the clock at 10.82. Meanwhile, the other, a son of three-time winner Etheridge (Roman Emperor), breezed in a time of 10.56. He was purchased for $140,000 at the same Inglis sale.

With this year’s edition coming hot on the heels of two record-breaking years and more high-class results on the racecourse, the thirst for stock from the sale has never been in higher demand.

Beatson said if the inspections on Sunday were anything to go by all the early signs were they are set for another strong edition.

“We are a lot busier than I thought we’d be for the first day, so that was quite nice and we’re ticking along alright,” he said. “There are a lot more people who have come in earlier than I thought, so that is quite encouraging. It’s a mixture of buyers, we’ve had a few local trainers and bloodstock agents around today and there are a lot of internationals too, and I would say there are more internationals than normal at this early stage of the sale.

“New Zealand Bloodstock have done a lot of work behind the scenes and they have got a lot of the right people here and so far it seems to be tracking the right way. We are really looking forward to the sale because so far it has started really well.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Pride hunting for further feature success

Ceolwulf (Credit: Racing Photos)

Having landed the VRC Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington last Saturday with Ceolwulf (Tavistock), Warwick Farm-based trainer Joe Pride will send a quartet of runners to this Saturday's $1 million The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle. Coal Crusher (Turffontein), who won the race in 2023, will be joined by stablemates Accredited (All Too Hard), Estadio Mestalla (Galileo Gold) and Golden Mile (Astern). "Coal Crusher was a nice run in the Russell Balding and there's the two horses that went really well the other day – they ran one-two at Randwick – so it's a strong hand in what will be no doubt a competitive race," Pride said. Coal Crusher ran third in last year's The Hunter following his 2023 success, and could come up against rivals such as The Ingham (1600m) winner Robusto (Churchill) and his Bjorn Baker-trained stablemate Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert), Group 2-winning sprinter Airman (I Am Invincible), and the progressive Ciaron Maher-trained import Darnation (Too Darn Hot). Estadio Mestalla and Accredited finished first and second respectively in the $300,000 Choisir Handicap (1100m) at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day, while Golden Mile could only manage 13th of 15 runners in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) last time out. "He's been disappointing so far so I'm hoping he can find something, because he needs to find a couple of lengths," Pride added.

Inkaruna to tackle Thoroughbred Club Stakes

Last-start Red Roses Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) runner-up Inkaruna (I Am Invincible) will bid for a big payday this weekend when she tackles the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. The Sam and Anthony Freedman-trained filly was making her third start of the campaign last time out, having previously run third in the Cap D'Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and seventh in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). "We kept it in the back of our mind for her and she's pulled up well," Sam Freedman said. "She's had a pretty light preparation so far, so I think we'll front up and see how she does. You can draw a line in the form with some of those nicer fillies that fronted up on Thursday. She began a bit better with the blinkers on on Oaks Day, so if she's able to settle a bit closer that's going to hold her in good stead as well." The Freedman stable could also have Katsumi Orochi (Maurice) in the $400,000 Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). The son of Maurice (Screen Hero) ran 11th in the Amanda Elliott (Listed, 1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day last time out. "He's probably just looking for a bit further, so he'll probably run, but he's got to step up," Freedman added.

TBV’s Murray delighted with Victoria’s carnival success

Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria (TBV) president Peter Murray has revealed his delight at the amount of locally trained winners during Melbourne Cup Week, with Victorian-based runners taking out five of the eight Group 1s. Half Yours (St Jean), Tentyris (Street Boss), Observer (Ghaiyyath), Strictly Business (Grunt) and Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) all flew the Victoria flag. "It's been pretty amazing," Murray told Racing.com. "I think it's been since around the early 1940s that this kind of thing has occurred … it was great to see the success spread across smaller stables and smaller farms. Victoria's breeding scene isn't necessarily punching above its weight, but it's definitely standing out. With all the extra investment that these farms are making, we're starting to see some return. St Jean stands at Brackley Park and has only had 51 foals, 22 runners and 12 winners. So, it's a pretty good strike-rate, but not many people were going to him … he's a perfect horse for people that want to breed to race and now he's got one with a Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup. And hopefully Ghaiyyath will come back! He didn't stand here this year, he stayed in Europe … I'll be putting some calls in."

Vale Pat Farrell

NSW racing has lost one of its truly iconic characters after it was announced that legendary Muswellbrook-based trainer, Pat Farrell has died at the age of 83. Farrell started his training career at 21 and along with his late brother Frank, conducted one of the most successful country-based training operations in the history of country NSW racing. At its peak the stable boasted around 100 horses in work with almost every major owner, administrator and stud in the Hunter Valley listed as stable supporters. Farrell had his final runner as a trainer in September last year, and his last winner was Pee Dee (Outreach) at Taree in April 2024. During his peak times, Farrell won eight-straight Newcastle premierships and saddled up Food For Love (Lunchtime) to finish second in the 1981 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). Paying tribute, Michael Beattie, CEO of Clarence River Jockey Club, said: “I'm honoured to call Pat Farrell a friend and the things he did for racing people quietly in the background to help when they were in need, would count well into the hundreds. RIP Pat Farrell, a legend as a trainer but a much bigger legend of a man, and you will be missed but never forgotten.”

New Zealand

Wolfgang on song for New Zealand Cup

It might not be the Cup they were aiming for this spring, but Peter and Shaun McKay are looking forward to heading south to Christchurch this week to contest the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) with their handy stayer Wolfgang (Puccini). The seven-year-old gelding was campaigning towards the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), but connections abandoned that mission following three unplaced runs in Melbourne. He returned to New Zealand and made an instant impact, winning under 62 kilograms in the Waikato Cup Prelude (2400m) at Te Rapa on Labour Day, which sealed his ticket south to contest the New Zealand Cup. “Things didn’t quite go right for him in Melbourne, but it [New Zealand Cup] is a good Plan B, and it is a nice race to try and chase,” Peter McKay said. “He had a really good kick on the corner [last start], but his fitness gave out a little bit. He did spend eight days in a paddock in Melbourne, and he was only back here just short of a fortnight, hence it was a pretty good win carrying the weight. A couple of horses in behind him have gone a good race next start in the Group race. He is going to cart a bit of weight, which is to be expected, but we are very happy with the way he is going into the race.”

Southern mare Radiant ahead of TAB Mile

The Radiant One (Darci Brahma) ran home well to finish runner-up behind Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) in Saturday’s Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Riccarton, and her trainer Robert Dennis is hoping the mare can go one better when she returns to the Christchurch track on Wednesday. Dennis was rapt with The Radiant One’s
weekend effort and said she has come through the race well and will back-up in the TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m). “That was her target when she went out for a spell at the end of last prep. To run a great second to a very good horse was very pleasing,” Dennis said. “She is staying at Anna Furlong’s stable, who has been a great host, and she seems to have come through it well, I don’t need to do much with her in between times.” The Radiant One will carry just 53 kilograms on Wednesday and will jump from barrier five, and Dennis believes she will handle the step-up to a mile. “The weight helps and she has got a good draw,” he said. “It never really looks like she has seen out a strong mile, but she is older now, is more mature, and the way she rounded it off over 1400 metres on Saturday, the mile doesn’t look like it is going to be a problem.”

Stonybreck leading tangerine charge

Stonybreck (Credit: Race Images)

A mishap last start hasn’t halted Stonybreck’s (Tavistock) preparation for the TAB Mile and he will lead a three-pronged attack for Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson in Wednesday’s feature at Riccarton. A six-time winner on synthetic tracks, Stonybreck has brought that form onto the turf this campaign in the South Island, headlined by a dominant five-length romp at the Christchurch venue in late September. The focus was firmly set on the TAB Mile and he lined-up against many key rivals last month only to knuckle badly as the gates opened and dislodge Opie Bosson in the process. Despite the missed run, Te Akau’s South Island-based assistant trainer Hunter Durrant couldn’t be happier with the gelding and has him on top ahead of stablemates Perfect Scenario (Iffraaj) and Cognito (So You Think). “He hasn’t shown any sign of that affecting him and he’s probably had more life in him since, his work has been the best I’ve ever seen it,” Durrant said. “He’s bouncing around like a two-year-old so I’m expecting a bold run. He’s probably my pick of the three.” Durrant isn’t discounting the chances of the stable’s other runners, with Perfect Scenario returning for his second shot at the race after finishing a close third under topweight last year. He will contend with a 60 kilogram impost again this time. “He’s been pretty unlucky this prep, he’s had a few runs where things didn’t go his way and last start he just got back and it’s hard to make up ground when you’ve got 60 kilograms plus,” Durrant said. Cognito, a two-time winner this campaign, defeated all but an impressive Sir Albert (Savabeel) last start in the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m). “He was really good on face value there, he probably just peaked on the run a bit at the finish so stepping back to a mile is the key,” Durrant added.

HK: Ka Ying Rising heads ten entries for Group 2 Sha Tin sprint

Last-start The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) is one of ten horses entered in the Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) on November 23 as he bids to defend his title in the Sha Tin Group 2 contest, a race which he used last year as a springboard to success in the following month’s Hong Kong International Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). David Hayes’s now five-time Group 1 winner produced another hugely impressive performance when scoring by an eased-down 1.2 lengths in The Everest, and could face challenges from Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner), Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse), Lucky With You (Artie Schiller) and Helios Express (Toronado) in this month’s Jockey Club Sprint.

HK: McDonald poised for International Jockeys’ Championship

James McDonald will arrive in Hong Kong this week for the start of a seven-week riding stint in the Asian racing hub. A regular visitor to Hong Kong, McDonald is eyeing success in the International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley on December 10, and four days later, to ride Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) to a record-breaking fourth successive Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) triumph at Sha Tin. McDonald said he was excited to return to Hong Kong. “It’s very good for my riding because there are such good riders there,” he said. “It’s something to really look forward to and again it’s a great challenge because it’s so competitive and I always enjoy my time there. Not only is there great racing, but I’ve also got the legend of Romantic [Warrior] there, so I just can’t wait to see him first and foremost. Competing in the jockeys’ challenge is always a highlight of the year and then especially the international races in December.” Asked if he thought Romantic Warrior, who is returning after undergoing fetlock surgery in May, had been okay in a recent 1600-metre turf trial at Sha Tin, when ridden by Hugh Bowman, McDonald said: “Better than okay, I would have thought. He is flying and Danny [Shum, trainer] has done a fantastic job with him, and he has been complimentary, as has Hugh. I can’t wait .”

UK: Arrowfield shuttler Vandeek sole stallion for Cheveley Park Stud in 2026

Vandeek (Credit: Arrowfield)

Arrowfield Stud shuttler Vandeek (Havana Grey) will stand for an unchanged fee of £15,000 (approx. AU$30,280) for his second season at Cheveley Park Stud in 2026. The champion two-year-old covered 161 mares in his debut book, a number that includes 18 siblings to Group 1 winners, 15 half- or full-sisters to Group 2 winners and 25 other stakes producers. Not only did Vandeek win the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) and Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) during an unbeaten juvenile campaign, but his profile has been further enhanced by the exploits of his half-brother Gstaad. The son of Starspangledbanner (Choisir), who was also bred by Kelly Thomas’s Maywood Stud, landed this year’s Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f). Vandeek will be the sole name on the Cheveley Park roster in 2026 with Ulysses (Galileo) making the switch to SAB Allevamento di Besnate in Italy. The son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo) has sired 16 black-type performers during his time in Newmarket, a roll of honour headed by Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) winner White Birch. The transfer to Italy sees Ulysses stand alongside former British-based names Adaay (Kodiac) and Mukhadram (Shamardal).

FR: Rau appointed as international nominations rep for Aga Khan Studs

Bloodstock agent Tina Rau has joined the Aga Khan Studs in a newly-created role as international nominations representative. The job will involve strengthening the team’s presence at the major European sales and Rau will work alongside Julie White and Fanny Cypres, who oversee nominations and client relations for the Irish and French stallion rosters respectively. Rau is a graduate of both the Irish National Stud and the Godolphin Flying Start programmes and founded her own agency in 2009. She is also the German representative for Tattersalls and will continue that role as well as her own work as a bloodstock agent alongside her new responsibilities. She said: "I am delighted and honoured to be joining the Aga Khan Studs, particularly at a time when their stallion roster is at its strongest ever. I look forward to supporting breeders in their stallion selections and to working closely with the existing team to promote these outstanding horses at the European sales." The Aga Khan Studs recently announced the 2026 fees for its five stallions based across France and Ireland, with Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) leading the way at a career-high fee of €300,000 (approx. AU$531,320).

FR: Inaugural fees for Castillon Stallions revealed

Newly-formed Castillon Stallions has announced its first set of stallion fees with Group 1-winning pair Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Muhaarar) and Tribalist (Farhh) leading the way at €6,000 (approx. AU$10,620). The Normandy farm, founded by Benoit Jeffroy and Annabelle Aime, has also appointed Enrico Simone Faccarello as head stallion man and nominations sales manager. Marhaba Ya Sanafi, the winner of the 2023 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 2100m), has been retired from racing and his syndication is currently under way. Tribalist, a multiple Group scorer for Andre Fabre and Godolphin, is also new to stud. The remaining Castillon sires have joined from elsewhere in France. Romanised (Holy Roman Emperor), who was at Haras de Bouquetot, has been trimmed from €7,000 to €5,000 (approx. AU$8,850) while Thunder Moon (Zoffany), who joined from the same farm, is unchanged at the same fee. Texas (Wootton Bassett) and Magic Dream (Saint Des Saints), who were both at Haras du Hoguenet, are also unchanged at €3,800 (approx. AU$6,730) and €3,500 (approx. AU$6,200) respectively.

Waikato Stud on a roll heading into RTR Sale

Waikato Stud was a dominant force at Pukekohe on Saturday with a hat-trick of winners, and the premier nursery is hoping their celebrations continue this week during New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale.

The Matamata farm’s colours were carried to victory by the exciting Smart Love (Savabeel) and Magice (Savabeel) while graduate Princess Elly (Sacred Falls) showcased her trainer Craig Ivil’s skills with a first-up middle-distance victory.

Waikato will offer seven youngsters at the RTR Sale at Karaka on Wednesday and Thursday and a further half-a-dozen in partnership with Ohukia Lodge.

The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-prepared Smart Love continued her hot form at Pukekohe where the daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) and the O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Relentless Desire posted her fourth consecutive win from six appearances.

“She was retained and is in [father] Garry’s name after a colt out of the mare was sold for a lot of money and since then she has changed over to Waikato Stud ownership,” Mark Chittick said.

Smart Love’s brother Incessant was knocked down for $850,000 at Karaka and won from a handful of starts in Australia before relocating to Hong Kong where he races as Bucephalas.

“We’ve got a Noverre filly that we’re looking toward the Sydney Easter Sale with, and she’s also got an Ardrossan filly at foot, and the mare has tested positive to Super Seth,” Chittick said.

Savabeel four-year-old Magice was a winner last season from Glenn Old’s stable before he crossed the Tasman.

“Once again, he was retained in Garry’s name and went over to Peter Moody but had to get a bone chip taken out and when he came back he was gelded,” Chittick said.

“He’s trained here at Courtza Park by Kris Shailer and it was Garry’s decision to leave him with Kris as a racing project and he’s done an extremely good job with him.

“We’re very fortunate to have him as part of the Waikato team, he’s very skilful and does all our pre-training.”

Magice is a brother to New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner and resident stallion Noverre (Savabeel), with their dam the Group-winning Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) mare Magic Dancer, who has a yearling Savabeel filly.

Shailer also prepares two-year-old Justin Case (Banquo), a debut second at Pukekohe.

“He was broken in by Jamie Beatson [Ohukia Lodge] and was going to the RTR Sale, but he really liked him, so I said let’s go halves and race him,” Chittick said.

His dam is the Savabeel mare Do Ra Mi, winner of the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) when trained by Moody.

Meanwhile, a Waikato Stud favourite in Ohukia’s consignment for the RTR Sale is Lot 172, a son of Super Seth (Dundeel) and the Savabeel mate Touting who is closely related to stakes winners Love Affair (Savabeel), Somepin Anypin (Pins) and Rule Of Engagement (Danasinga).

“I really like preparing horses for the RTR, but it’s not a big thing for us although it’s something we’re going to look at in the future, and the reason is because at this time of the year we are flat out,” Chittick said.

“I’m guided by the people who have done all the work and we’re in partnership with the ones with Ohukia and Jamie has spoken very highly of the Super Seth,” Chittick said.

Waikato Stud’s draft features a quartet of sons by Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice), two by Noverre and a representative of Ocean Park (Thorn Park).

Something special

Well Written (Credit: Race Images South)

ANZ News

When a star remains unbeaten it might look like everything is easy but ask Chris Waller or Peter Moody what it’s like to keep a streak going. The pressure only increases and that is what Stephen Marsh has to look forward to with Well Written (Written Tycoon) after her effortless demolition of Saturday’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) which drew an outstanding field. The only filly missing was Tajana (Darci Brahma) who was reserved for the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in a nod to Well Written’s anticipated dominance

Well Written’s streak is hardly commonplace as she landed Ellerslie’s Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at her second start by nearly seven lengths with Tajana and Loolapalooza (El Roca) in her wake. The Guineas win may not have seen an especially fast time but she won it on her ear, was eased late yet still had 2.5 lengths up her sleeve. She truly is something special.

She was reluctant to load, providing Marsh with some anxious moments but barrier staff managed to put her in riderless. Pre-race, the instructions from Marsh to Matt Cartwright were to ride the filly as if she was the best in the race. The plan was to always wait before unleashing from her handy fourth spot turning for home. Cartwright had decided to count to ten before emerging from the slipstream but later admitted that he only got to six yet the expected acceleration was such that she put the race away well before the 100 metres with an explosive burst.

Comparisons with Winx (Street Cry) and Black Caviar (Bel Espirit) are outrageous at this early juncture but Well Written certainly looks to have that rare and special star quality. Training and owning one so good opens up all sorts of possibilities but one given is that the filly, now part-owned by powerhouse Yulong Investments, will inevitably end up in Australia, an Australian Group 1 the ultimate goal.

Then again, at the site of her second win just happens to be the richest race in the country, the $4 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) and the timing might be ideal before she heads to Sydney for The Championships.

Last year, Savaglee (Savabeel) bypassed the NZB Kiwi as his connections were keen to nab an Australian Group 1 to enhance his stallion potential and he ran very well when second in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The filly and her connections are not faced with the same issue and may prefer to offset her undoubtedly considerable purchase price before a Sydney trip. The problem the stable faces in the meantime is where to race.

Ellerslie will be the venue but there is nothing suitable at the Christmas/New Year carnival so they will likely have to wait until Karaka Millions night. She is eligible for the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (Listed, 1600m) but 1600 metres fresh up might be a bridge too far. A race like the Westbury Classic (Gr 1, 1400m) or maybe even a sharp Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) might be more likely unless the stable can find a tune-up race. In the meantime she will be kept in cotton wool.

Well Written first appeared for sale as a weanling at the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale, purchased for $32,500 by Foxhill Thoroughbreds whose principal is Benji King, son of Brighthill Farm’s Nick King. It was via Brighthill Farm that agent Dylan Johnson found the filly for Stephen Marsh when she was offered and sold at the NZB National Online Yearling Sale fetching $80,000. Hindsight is 20:20 but $80,000 does seem a bargain for anything by Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

The Guineas victory added $345,000 to her bank account which now stands at $462,875. She is the only foal of the twice Listed-placed winner Mozzie Monster (Sebring) whose dam Valentine Miss (Danetime) scored six wins, including the How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in Melbourne. An honest mare, Valentine Miss placed at Group 3 level a further four occasions and three times she recorded Group 1 fourths

Valentine Miss’s dam Torolosa (Housebuster) was bred in New Zealand and sold at the NZB 1999 NZB Premier Karaka Yearling sale. Her dam, Yuleda (One Pound Sterling) was a Listed winner in Perth. Yuleda’s granddam is the top class two-year-old stakes winner Jocasta (Pakistan II) whose half-sister Porsha (Alcimedes) also landed the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas way back in 1976

Ceolwulf (Credit: Racing Photos)

The New Zealand-bred Ceolwulf (Tavistock) defied his opponent Pericles (Street Boss) -  who appeared to have the upper hand 100 metres from the line - to prevail by the narrowest of margins in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Ceolwulf is certainly one for the big time as four of his seven wins have taken place at Group 1 level beginning with the an Epsom Handicap (1600m)-King Charles III Stakes (1600m) double in 2024 and this year a similar back-to-back Group 1 effort of his repeat in the King Charles III Stakes immediately prior to the Champions Mile.

The $10.9 million earner is from the last half crop by Tavistock (Montjeu) and was purchased for $170,000 out of Sam Beatson’s Riversley Park draft at the 2022 NZB Ready To Run Sale, thus a perfect advertisement for next week’s version of the same sale. He is the only winner from his dam Las Brisas (Shamardal), a half-sister to ten winners, including Goodwood Listed scorer Nantyglo (Mark Of Esteem).

Sadly, there are no more Tavistocks but the sire of New Zealand 1,000 Guineas winner Well Written, Written Tycoon, does have one lot on offer and Lot 371 could be one of the top priced lots as he ranks as a half-brother to three-time Group 3 winner My Whisper (Frankel).

Not one but two Group 1s

In 1977 Beltana Stud in Parnassus, North Canterbury, imported Geraniums Red, a three-year-old filly by Brigadier Gerard (Queens Hussar). The Rutherford family never raced the filly. They didn’t really need to as she had a nice pedigree, by a champion from the Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Celina (Crepello).

Her future was as a broodmare and she produced her first foal, Red Gerard (Red Lord) in 1978, a minor winner. Her next foal struck gold as Affinity (Zamazaan) registered five wins, including the 1984 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). He also recorded a second placing in the 1984 Adelaide Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

Two further minor winners followed before the Rutherfords sent Geraniums Red back to Zamazaan (Exbury), the result Red Chase who scored in Sydney and Melbourne and whose placings included a third in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

Her last two foals, Perfumery (Zabeel) and Rose World (Grosvenor) were unable to add to the mare’s record but Rose World made up for that by foaling O’Reilly Rose (O’Reilly), a nine-race winner whose premier performance was taking out the White Robe Lodge Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) plus three Listed wins.

Rose World’s daughter Volkrose (Volksraad) also visited O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) and the result was Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) victor Shamexpress, later to stand at Windsor Park Stud and make headlines as the sire of the world’s best sprinter, Ka Ying Rising.

Meanwhile, O’Reilly Rose’s daughter Rosegarden (Savabeel) has given the line a serious boost courtesy of Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), impressive winner of last month’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). That was his third win in five starts and against a top field which indicates a bright future and, who knows, maybe a future as a stallion. His connections have been aware of Autumn Boy’s potential for some time and the Guineas provided proof.

It has been a while but the second to last foal of Geraniums Red, Perfumery, has finally joined the club and is responsible for last week’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner, Strictly Business (Grunt). Not directly, of course. A few generations have taken place since Perfumery was foaled in 1992.

On the track she raced twice but at stud produced five winners, the best being Moonee Valley winner Suspense (Regal Classic) who won seven times. Another winner was Wantonly (Al Maher) whose daughter Tivoli Lass (Uncle Mo) is the dam of Strictly Business. The O’Reilly factor is present in Strictly Business’s pedigree as Grunt, her sire, is a son of the former Waikato Stud multiple champion sire.

The Oaks was the filly’s fourth start and she broke her maiden only last month, at her second start. Prior to her stunning last-to-first Oaks win she was a solid second in the Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) behind heavy Oaks favourite Getta Good feeling (So You Think) who found the extra 500 metres of Thursday’s race too tough.

Strictly Business was withdrawn from the weanling section of the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale, the same sale at which Well Written was purchased. Tivoli Lass was sold for a meagre $600 at an online sale, also in 2023. There will be more as Strictly Business won too well for that to be her last win.

Milan Park-Waikato-Haunui combo

Force Of Nature (Credit: Race Images)

Putting together a super record is Force Of Nature (Savabeel), stakes winner number 153 for his sire. Force Of Nature just scraped home but he keeps winning and the Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m) was win six in just 11 starts. He enjoyed an economical run and never covered extra ground throughout. Fourth into the home straight, his challenge was along the fence, before he took a narrow lead at the 200 metres then held on for dear life at the post.

Raced by Tony Rider in his familiar Milan Park colours, the now five-year-old was bred by Rider and was offered at the 2022 NZB Ready To Run Sale but failed to reach his $150,000 reserve. Rider also bred Force Of Nature’s older sister, Listed winner Shezzacatch (Savabeel) as well as their dam Elusive Nature (O’Reilly).

Force Of Nature is yet another bred on Waikato Stud’s highly successful Savabeel-O’Reilly cross from a family established by Haunui Farm in 1950 when the Chitty family purchased Foxona (Foxbridge) from Trelawney Stud as a weanling. In nine generations Foxona is responsible for 51 individual stakes winners.
