A deep and quality catalogue of around 370 two-year-olds are on the market for this year’s NZB Ready To Race Sale, with the two-day auction beginning at the Karaka Sales Centre on Wednesday.

NZB bloodstock sales manager Kane Jones told ANZ News that he was delighted with the buyers on site ahead of the sale, which will attempt to continue its strong upward trajectory from recent years.

“I think the record of the sale speaks for itself and you can see that in the number of people that are here and showing interest again this year, it just continues to go from strength to strength,” he said.

The sale concluded with an aggregate of $38.59 million last year – a remarkable ten per cent increase on the 2023 record edition – and a clearance rate of 78 per cent, while the average and record-equalling median were in line with the previous year.

NZB also set a southern hemisphere record in 2024 when Te Akau Racing went to $1.65 million for the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt out of Group 1 winner Shillelagh (Savabeel) now named Hostility, who is already Group 1-placed and one of a plethora of stakes-performing graduates across the last season, 12 of them winners with ten at Group 1 level.

What's On

Those include the likes of Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Feroce (Super Seth), Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Antino (Redwood) and Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) scorer War Machine (Harry Angel) – while fellow graduates Gringrotts (Per Incanto) and Ceolwulf (Tavistock) were timely respective winners of the Big Dance (1600m) and Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last week.

Those horses continue a legacy of elite graduates of the sale, including Hong Kong superstars Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse) and Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro).

“The graduates out of the sale, Lucky Sweynesse and Golden Sixty up in Hong Kong, but more recently, right throughout Australia, we've had just remarkable results,” Jones said.

“We had Ceolwulf winning the Champions Mile on the weekend, that was beautiful timing heading into this week – a great example of the type of horse that you can buy out of this sale.

“The last couple of years have been quite remarkable, we set all the records two years ago and didn't think we could replicate that last year, and it turns out we did, so it was even bigger last year.

“We’re certainly not resting on our laurels; we're all working hard. The whole team's working particularly hard to try to garner the best buying bench we possibly can and maintain the last few years. And look, to exceed the last few years would be a dream, but we're certainly trying to at least maintain the figures from the last few years.”

The weight of those results has translated into palpable buyer confidence on the grounds this week, with a notably international flavour to inspections at Karaka as trainers, agents and owners from across Australasia and Asia assess a catalogue brimming with depth.

“I'm just thrilled with who's on site here,” Jones said. “It's a really deep and wide-ranging buying bench. A lot of local New Zealand trainers are out in force, but we've got a good contingent from Malaysia, a big contingent from mainland China, more Australians than previous years, and we've got a huge contingent of trainers and owners from Hong Kong, so that part of the market will be particularly strong.”

Hong Kong-based buyers spent $17.37 million on 73 lots last year, and while the region’s buying power remains a cornerstone of the sale’s success, Jones said the catalogue offers great versatility, with a range of horses likely to suit different jurisdictions and training programs.

“I think that not every horse is a Hong Kong style horse,” he said. “There's horses that I've earmarked for Australia, and I think the likes of Trent Busuttin and Mike Price and different trainers will identify them pretty easily.”

When asked whether the number of withdrawals could be attributed to the wet spring, Jones said: “At this sale there’s withdrawals for a number of reasons, that could well be one. People want to bring a horse that breezes and vets out well, so if those boxes aren't ticked that could be considered, but I think it's pretty consistent with recent years.”

Reflecting on the strong trade at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale in Sydney, Jones said there was healthy engagement from key Asian buyers, many of whom appeared to be saving their biggest moves for Karaka.

“Hong Kong was pretty strong there, but the feedback we got from people that were on site was that they were keeping their powder dry for this sale,” he said.

“So we know that their appetite is particularly strong. When you've had champions like Golden Sixty and Lucky Sweynesse up there and even Ka Ying Rising, he wasn't a Karaka graduate, but he's a New Zealand product through and through and a phenomenal advertisement for us and they love to buy at our sale.”

Top vendor at this sale by aggregate for all of the last seven years, Sam Beatson’s Riversley Park looms as a major player again this week with a 39-strong draft after withdrawals set to go through the ring.

In 2017 the operation sold ten-time Group 1 star Golden Sixty for $300,000 before he went on to break Hong Kong’s all-time prize money record, earning HK$167 million (NZ$34 million) in 31 starts. The Beatsons also sold Ceolwulf at the 2022 sale, the now four-time Group 1-winning miler being bought for $170,000 by his trainer Joe Pride and part-owner Leighton Howl.

“We’ve had more foot traffic this year than any other year, so hopefully we see the results in the ring,” Sam Beatson told ANZ. “I think there’s still a few more Hong Kong buyers to come so everything's pretty positive.

“The results speak for themselves at this sale, everyone keeps coming back because they're getting good horses.”

Riversley’s draft features progeny by 28 different sires both proven and emerging in New Zealand and Australia, among them Per Incanto (Street Cry), Super Seth (Dundeel), Shamexpress (O’Reilly), The Autumn Sun (Redoute's Choice), Toronado (High Chaparral), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj).

The group reflects a deliberate effort to cater to the sale’s diverse buying bench, particularly those seeking the sharper, speed-oriented profiles.

“In New Zealand now we are getting a lot more speed stallions, but it used to be traditionally Australia and Hong Kong that love speed,” Beatson said.

“There's a lot more to choose from in Australia, so that's why we go there, but I think New Zealand's breeding more sprinters now, so we might have a bit more to choose from in the next couple of years. That’s what the Hong Kong market likes.

“When I am buying, I try to target the Hong Kong market, because obviously that's got the most money and we've had great results up there. But it's always handy having the Malaysians and the Koreans to come and buy, maybe those middle to lower horses and the Aussies, they come buy all sorts. It's always good to have them over here as well.”

Beatson was happy with his draft’s breeze ups, with all but three of his lots breaking 11 seconds for 200 metres at Tarapa. His fastest was Lot 110, a colt by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) out of the winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Shrill, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Silent Honor (Sunday Silence).

“It was a bit of a windy old day,” he said, “and the horses obviously don't love wind, but we're happy they went well. When you’re breezing around 40 it's hard to get everything spot on, but no, we were happy. The track at Tarapa was very consistent.”

Another notable member of the draft is Lot 360, a colt by Wootton Bassett out of Riccarton Listed winner Grazia (Savabeel).

“There's a couple I really like,” Beatson said. “I've got a Wootton Bassett with a really nice pedigree that could be a stallion prospect, if the right people are on it. We won't really know until he goes through the ring I suppose.

“Two people are what you need. We always go on with very low reserves. We try and get them on the market early, and they find what value they are is what the market says. If they like it enough, they’ll go to war hopefully and we’ll make some money.”

Prominent due in some part to his untimely passing, late Coolmore shuttle sire Wootton Bassett is represented by two other lots who are also attractively bred.

Lot 70 is from a Fastnet Rock (Danehill) half-sister to four stakes horses, including Group 2 winner Castlereagh Kid (Snitzel) plus Group 1-placed winners Aberfeldie Boy (So You Think) and Happy Hannah (More Than Ready). Meanwhile, Lot 438 is the half-brother to Sydney Group 3 winner Saif-Jumbo Fortune (Pride Of Dubai).

Fresh off training her first winner at Ellerslie last week alongside her sister Hanna Orting, Sophia Nolan is back at Karaka with 17 lots (after withdrawals) prepared by herself and husband Derek under their Lilywhites Lodge banner.

“We have got a good number this year, we’ve got a few nice horses,” Nolan told ANZ.

“We have a Proisir colt [Lot 281] out of Contrary Mary, he’s probably my standout and has proven popular. He’s a looker. Lot 92, the Almanzor out of a good mare in Secret Allure, has also been very popular. The dam was a multiple Group winner. The Earthlight gelding [Lot 146] has also been popular, he had a good breeze. So we’ll see, but I’m happy with the crowds.”

Nolan commented on a mixed set of breeze ups for her draft, noting that a few were unsuited by the softer conditions.

“They were a little bit up and down, it wasn’t a bad track but it was a little soft and holding - some horses skipped through and some got a little bit tripped up,” she said. “The ideal is a beautiful dry track.”

The fastest of the draft was the Earthlight (Shamardal) gelding, who breezed 200 metres in 10.62. He is the second foal out of the winning Tavistock (Montjeu) mare Taco Tiger, whose dam is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Sutology (Straussbrook).

One who has made major strides since his yearling preparation is Lot 206 by Hello Youmzain (Kodiac). The colt is out of the Zabeel (Sir Tristam) mare Ziffel, herself a half-sister to Group 2-winning juvenile Amelia’s Dream (Redoute’s Choice) – the dam of nine winners from nine foals to race.

“He came to us and wasn’t very big, he got scratched from the yearling sales but he’s really well bred from Cambridge Stud,” she said. “He’s flew – a very good moving horse and he will keep improving.”

Reflecting on activity at Karaka, Nolan said the atmosphere on the grounds felt encouraging, with solid buyer presence across key markets.

“The feeling you get is that there are plenty of buyers here, it’s busy enough,” she said. “Singapore was a loss but I think Malaysia has grown quite a lot, so that’s good for the middle market.”

Among the robust buyers bench from the local fraternity will be Cambridge Stud CEO Henry Plumptre, who was pleased with what he saw on Tuesday.

“We’re buying in a pretty small bracket, we’re looking for fillies for our racing stable [Karaka]. Sir Brenden and Lady Jo Lindsay race 30-odd horses in a private stable here at Karaka and our numbers are a little bit down this year so we’re looking,” Plumptre told ANZ. “At a sale like this, if I look at 15 to 20 fillies and find three, I’m happy.

“I do have one client in Melbourne who might want to buy a horse here so I’ll have a look at half a dozen geldings for him. I’ve probably seen 50 horses this morning, I think the standard is generally very good.”

The Waikato operation have enjoyed much success with their fillies on the track in recent times, with leading sprinter Joliestar (Zoustar) and dual Group 1 winner Snazzytavi (Tavistock) among their chief representatives. Meanwhile, their Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) mare Dance To The Boom continued her good form when taking the The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day.

Plumptre said NZB’s previous Ready To Run results inspire confidence about securing another potential star.

“I think Ready To Runs get judged on performance, and the performance out of this sale is consistently higher than its counterparts in Australia,” he said. “They have good results in Hong Kong, Australia, the Group 1 winner at the weekend, Ceolwulf, came from this sale alongside plenty of others.

“If you can turnover, say ten per cent of the catalogue and convert them into city-winning stakes horses, that’s a very high percentage, and that’s consistently what this sale does.”

Plumptre said the Ready To Run marketplace had matured into a highly professional sector of the bloodstock scene, led by plenty of experienced consignors who specialise in preparing horses specifically for this format.

“There’s an element of it that’s recycled yearlings, maybe their reserves were too high or they had problems, but by and large you’ve got big, professional consignors here who don’t do anything but Ready To Run,” he said. “They focus on buying in the right stock that they know can develop. They all have quite a bit of experience now and are getting good results.”

Discussing the wider economic backdrop, Plumptre noted that while all bloodstock markets are sensitive to interest rates and consumer confidence, recent results suggest the sector remains in good health.

“Ready To Run is no different to yearling sales in terms of economics, if the economy is struggling interest rates are going to slowly come down, with people short of money the market will be down,” he said. “This year, I’ve been surprised by the Ready To Race results in Australia, I think that shows it’s quite a buoyant market. I'm sure this sale will hold up pretty well.”

Plumptre said the preparation required to present a polished two-year-old is often underestimated, stressing that successful Ready To Run consignors rely on horsemanship rather than raw speed at the breeze-ups.

“It’s hard to get it right with breeze ups,” he said. “It’s easy to make a mess of a two-year-old by getting it wrong. Most catalogues have 400 lots and about 20 per cent are withdrawn, that’s because a lot of them aren't dealing with the preparation.

“It’s a refined process: you’re not just teaching them how to walk up and down in a line, you actually have to teach them how to race.

“All that development time, there’s a whole range of things that can affect them. The thing about Ready To Run is knowing when to back off them and when you can push.

“As a nation the Kiwis are a bit like the Irish, there are a lot of good horsemen here who source their stock, bring them home and break them in. I think this country gets it right.”

Selling gets underway at 10am (NZDT) on Wednesday.

Angel Capital primed for Orr Stakes tilt

Angel Capital (Credit: Racing Photos)

Chris Waller believes Angel Capital (Harry Angel) is “ticking every box” ahead of Saturday’s CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, after the colt stretched his legs with a quiet gallop on the course proper on Tuesday morning. The $1 million Orr Stakes holds extra significance for the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel), who is yet to break through at elite level and could secure his future at stud with victory in Melbourne’s final Group 1 of 2025. “He’s ticking over nicely. He had a trial last Wednesday in Sydney then travelled down Thursday. He’s very fit,” Waller told Racing.com. “He ran in The Everest a few weeks back and, as I said, the trial, so he’s as fit as we can get him – we don’t want to get him any fitter – we just want to keep him sharp.” Regular jockey Ben Melham partnered Angel Capital in the gallop and will retain the ride on Saturday. “Ben Melham knows the horse better than I do and he said he feels great. He’s nice and relaxed so 1400 metres, he’s ready for it,” Waller said. “It’s going to be a great race. I thought it might be a bit weaker. I thought we’d picked out an easy one but it’s great to see Jimmysstar there and a few others so it will be a good contest.” A five-time winner from ten starts, Angel Capital has mixed form at Caulfield but boasts strong credentials at the course, having won the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) and Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). He also ran fourth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) earlier this spring. Reflecting on his most recent start when sixth in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), Waller said: “I would have liked to see them go a little bit quicker and really put it to Ka Ying Rising and that would have really set it up for the backmarkers, but it didn’t quite work out,” he said. “But his sectional times would have been pretty awesome.”

Brown chasing more Group 1 glory with Jimmysstar

Ethan Brown is hopeful his strong partnership with Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) can deliver another feature victory when the pair line up in Saturday’s CF Orr Stakes. The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding returns to Melbourne following a successful Sydney campaign, where he finished placed in both the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and The Everest before claiming the $3 million Russell Balding (1300m) at Randwick. Brown has ridden Jimmysstar eight times this year for three feature wins and three placings, including elite-level triumphs in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) and All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). “He’s just such a good horse and he holds a special spot in my heart. He’s a beauty,” Brown told Racing.com. “He just tries so hard, he knows what his job is and we’ve gotten to know each other along the way. I know him better than ever now and he’s so hearty and so courageous.”

Group 2 test for Top Reward

Mornington-based trainer Clayton Douglas is taking his exciting colt Top Reward (Shamus Award) straight to black-type company after his impressive debut. The son of Shamus Award (Snitzel) will have just his second career start in Saturday’s Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), just 23 days after a dominant win in a 1500 metre Mornington maiden. “I thought he'd win first up and he did,” Douglas said. “We paid a bit of money for him and when you've got these colts you pay a bit of money for and there's a race like that there and it's at the end of the carnival, it's definitely worth having a crack at. He's shown me nice ability at home, so he'll definitely be running well.” Douglas took the colt to Caulfield on Tuesday for a look at the course proper. “I just brought him out here today for a day out and he's pulled up well, so I'm looking forward to Saturday,” he said. “It is a big jump in grade, so hopefully he can take that step but I think he'll run really well. He's a really lovely laid-back colt and I think even with more time under his belt he's going to be even better.”

Baker pair targeting Newcastle feature

Bjorn Baker is hopeful Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert) and Robusto (Churchill) can make their presence felt in Saturday’s $1 million The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle. Iowna Merc has enjoyed a strong 2025, winning three races, including a Group 2, and recently placing in the Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Baker, however, admits his charge underperformed last start in the Russell Balding Stakes, finishing last of the 15 runners. “Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he's in good order,” the trainer said. “He just didn't go at all, he didn't fire, so I think we just press on.” Robusto, purchased by Darby Racing in September last year, has won over $1.5 million for the stable, including the The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m), which remains his spring target. “Robusto's definitely well, he's going to be first up and try and aim towards The Ingham,” Baker said. “He's not out of it because he's got some good form, although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best.”

Nitro out to maintain perfect record at Rosehill

Peter Snowden believes promising gelding Nitro (Deep Field) will again need to show his sharp turn of foot when he chases a second win from as many starts at Rosehill on Wednesday. The three-year-old, a debut winner at Warwick Farm last month, will jump from the outside gate in a field reduced to seven for the opening Benchmark 68 (1200m). “If he drew a good gate we’d go forward and be in the first few but it’s more likely we’ll go back and ride him similar to the other day,’’ Snowden told Racing NSW. “It’s not a big field and hopefully he doesn’t get too far back. Get him to the outside and let him brush home. It is Rosehill with a big long run home and he can quicken.” Nitro produced a powerful finish to score on debut after missing the start, confirming the ability Snowden had seen since his early trials. “He’s always gone well. If you go back to his trial before the Breeders’ Plate he was slow to begin there and got back but he rocketed home,’’ the trainer said. “It was no surprise to see what he did, we’ve seen it before. He’s a talented horse and he’s taken it to the races and done it.”

Freedman eyes Newmarket for Tentyris after Champions Sprint setback

Tentyris (Credit: Racing Photos)

While Tentyris’s (Street Boss) late scratching from Saturday’s Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) was a bitter blow, connections believe the setback could work in the colt’s favour heading into next year’s autumn features. Sam Freedman, who trains the three-year-old in partnership with his father Anthony, told Racing.comL “The funny thing about Saturday, if he'd run and won, the weight he would have been allocated for the Newmarket, I suspect, would have been a little excessive. In this scenario, he probably gets 54 kilos – something like that – and that puts him in with a chance. You've seen a horse like Bivouac carry 54 and was successful. That'll be his target.” Tentyris was withdrawn after becoming unsettled in the barriers. “These things happen, unfortunately,” Freedman continued. “Thankfully, the horse has come through fine and he's 100 per cent. He went to the paddock yesterday and will enjoy a nice break and freshen up for the autumn.” Freedman said the Black Caviar Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) is a likely first-up option before the Newmarket, with the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) also on the radar. “They're all on the cards for him,” he said.

McDonald recovering after Cup Eve fall

It was far from the Melbourne Cup Week that Clinton McDonald had planned, with the Cranbourne-based trainer spending more than a week in hospital after a fall on Cup Eve. McDonald slipped in wet conditions, breaking four ribs and puncturing a lung, which saw him spend five days in intensive care before being moved to the trauma ward at the weekend. “I was in a pretty bad way,” he told Racing.com. “It was a bad morning with rain and the whole lot and I just slipped and crashed and smashed four ribs and punctured a lung. I had to get up and walk and [bloodstock agent] Shane McGrath was there and thought I was joking. I was trying to tell him to get the ambulance, which they did and then I was off to Dandenong Hospital and then they got me straight to The Alfred. It's been a long week.” McDonald was forced to watch his three Flemington runners from his hospital bed, including Tales Of Time (Pinatubo), who was narrowly beaten by Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), and Streisand (Magnus), runner-up in the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) on the final day of the carnival. Coleman (Pierata) also made his stable debut, finishing fourth behind Stokke (Rich Enuff) in the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on Oaks Day. McDonald said he hopes to be discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

Southside Racing confirms 2025 Meteorite and Supernova slot-holders

Southside Racing has confirmed the slot-holders for the 2025 Meteorite and Supernova series. The two-feature series will again include The Meteorite (1200m) on Cranbourne Cup Day, November 22, and The Supernova (1400m) on Pakenham Cup Day, December 13. Both races are open to three-year-olds and older and run under set-weights-and-penalties conditions. Fourteen slot-holders have been confirmed, including Ciaron Maher Racing, Moody Racing, Lindsay Park Racing and Yulong, with each able to nominate runners for one or both events. “The success of last year's inaugural series has set the stage for something even bigger in 2025,” said Southside Racing general manager Alastair Dwyer. The 2025 slot-holders are: Cape Schanck Racing; Carl Holt; Cavallo Park; Ciaron Maher Racing; Ladbrokes; Lindsay Park Racing; Lofty Thoroughbred Group; Moody Racing; Moonee Valley Racing Club; OTI Racing; Sheamus Mills Bloodstock; Southside Racing; The 308 Group; and Yulong. The series will also continue its community engagement program, with $20,000 in donations allocated to 15 grassroots organisations across the Southside region.

New Zealand

Mystic Park primed for TAB Mile

Mystic Park (Ocean Park) is set to take another step up in class on his home track at Riccarton on Wednesday, after a career-best performance during last year’s New Zealand Cup carnival. The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained gelding claimed the Stewards’ Stakes (Listed, 1200m) 12 months ago and now has the TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) in his sights. “He’s got a great record at Riccarton, and he’s only ever had the one start at a mile and ended up in front and he was a young and immature horse in those days,” Michael Pitman said. “This is the race we’ve been looking at this prep, rather than the Stewards. He gets in with a good weight [56.5 kilograms], he won the Stewards with 59 kilograms.” Daniel Stackhouse will travel from Melbourne to ride Mystic Park, drawn in gate six and Pitman said the horse’s preparation had been excellent. “We've been very happy with his preparation, his work has been really good and in both runs this time in he’s hit the line hard,” he said. “I believe we’ve got a very good rider on board and he’s drawn six, just where we wanted him to.”

Matscot seeking local success in feature

Matscot (Haradasun) will aim to break a streak of North Island success in the TAB Mile when he makes his second attempt at Wednesday’s feature at Riccarton Park. The eight-year-old finished a narrow second in last year’s edition and Alan Reeves, who co-trains with Sharon Robertson, said Matscot’s recent form had been encouraging. “He didn’t handle the track at Te Rapa at all but he ran very well in the Spring Classic, particularly carrying that weight,” Reeves said. “He found the line with a bit of purpose which was great to see, it was a good run going into the mile. He’s come back from 2000 metres before so we know what to do with him, he’s been out to Brian Court’s for five days on the water walker for a freshen up, he loves it out there. It’s like a holiday for him while still getting some exercise in. Yogesh [Atchamah] galloped him on the course proper on Saturday and he went really nicely, he loves to have a bowl around there. He’s all ready to go.” Joe Doyle will ride Matscot from the outside barrier 14. “It’s great to have Joe on him again, he knows him really well now which is good as he’s quite a quirky horse, he still does a few things wrong,” Reeves said. “I see he’s drawn the outside but that probably suits him, he can have a bit of room and stay out of trouble.”

Sibling Rivalry shows promise with maiden Te Aroha win

A bright future is being predicted for Sibling Rivalry (Satono Aladdin) after the filly broke through for her maiden victory over 1150 metres at Te Aroha on Tuesday. The three-year-old was only fairly away but Craig Grylls urged her forward to sit outside the leader Van Damme (Swiss Ace). The pair controlled proceedings throughout before Sibling Rivalry took over at the 250 metres and held off the fast-finishing Deprive (El Roca) to score by 1.5 lengths. Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson have long held the filly in high regard, with her early trial form franked by subsequent Group 1 winner Well Written (Written Tycoon). “It was a good ride of Craig’s to get her forward outside the leader and she quickened up nicely in the straight to win well,” Walker said. “It’s great to see her in the winner’s circle so early in her career and she won with enough authority to suggest she can go on with it from here. It’s been tough getting the horses ready, through a wet spring, but she’s found winning form and should take good confidence out of it.”

Silent Is Gold impresses ahead of summer return

Silent Is Gold (Credit: Race Images)

Kevin and Stephen Gray are looking forward to a productive summer with Silent Is Gold (Star Turn) after the talented sprinter scored a pleasing trial win over 850 metres at Foxton on Tuesday. A stakes performer in Singapore, the gelding joined Stephen Gray in New Zealand when racing ceased in the jurisdiction and made a smooth transition, placing three times before winning over 1350 metres at Wanganui in April. “We gave him a good spell after his last campaign, so he was a little bit fatter than usual, but I thought he trialled well and he has come up well,” Gray said. “We will be looking at the sprints around the New Year. The biggest problem for him is he gets a bit of weight, so we have got to find something that pushes his weight down a bit. He will have another jump-out in a couple of weeks and then we will go to the races somewhere.” Stablemates Hard Too Think (All Too Hard), Cooper (Tivaci) and Top Of The Pack (Ace High) also recorded 1000-metre trial wins. “Hard Too Think was coming up really well last year and then he had a little chip we had to take out of his fetlock joint,” Gray said. “It was unfortunate because he had two good runs back and then he went a little bit lame, so we took the chip out and he has had eight months to recover. He did trial very well, he is a very good galloper, so if he can get his form back, I am sure we will pick up a nice race around New Year’s. Top Of The Pack is a nice Ace High filly that we like that won well and Cooper was really good.”

NZTR appoints two new directors to its board

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has announced the appointment of Struan Abernethy and Louise Ward to its board of directors, with both bringing significant governance, commercial and community experience to the organisation. The appointments were confirmed by the NZTR Members’ Council, which oversees the selection of NZTR directors. Members’ Council chair Jeff McCall said the decision reflected the Council’s focus on strong leadership within the sport. “The NZTR Members’ Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Struan Abernethy and Louise Ward to the NZTR Board,” said McCall.
“Their combined governance expertise, business insight and personal connection to the sport will be a real asset to the organisation and the industry, helping ensure the long-term sustainability of thoroughbred racing in New Zealand.”

HK: Romantic Warrior gallops at Sha Tin ahead of Voyage Bubble clash

Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) warmed up for his eagerly anticipated return to action when he was reunited with James McDonald for a racecourse gallop at Sha Tin on Tuesday. The highest earning horse in racing history is set to clash with Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) in Sunday week’s Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m), marking 232 days between races – a period when the ten-time Group 1 winner underwent left fore fetlock surgery. Entering Sha Tin’s turf track via the sand ring, Romantic Warrior powered down the back stretch ahead of his work partner (Romantic Thor) with McDonald firmly in control. In the home straight, the bay gelding was given some rein, zipping effortlessly past a collection of press and photographers with ease before returning home under Danny Shum’s close eye after clocking 1m 14.7s (26.3, 25.8, 22.6). McDonald said: “He feels every bit as good as what he’s worked like in the past. He looks fantastic. Danny has done a great job with him – he was great. It will take a good one to beat him. I jumped out of bed pretty quickly this morning, that was for sure. He was my first ride and he just looks phenomenal – he’s prepping up nicely.”

IRE: Lope De Vega to stand for career-high €200,000

Lope De Vega (Shamardal) has surged to the highest fee during his career at Ballylinch Stud and will stand for €200,000 (approx. AU$354,640) in 2026. Ballylinch managing director John O’Connor said: "Lope De Vega reaffirmed his position as the world’s leading stallion in 2025, once again topping the global tables for the number of worldwide stakes horses, a title he also achieved in 2024. His remarkable consistency and versatility across continents continue to inspire confidence in breeders and buyers alike, which is reflected in his outstanding sales results. As in 2025, he will again cover a strictly limited book of mares in 2026."

UK: Baaeed fee trimmed into £55,000

Baaeed (Sea The Stars), the highest-rated horse in Europe for over a decade, will head the 2026 Shadwell stallion roster at a reduced fee of £55,000 (approx. AU$110,810). The champion son of Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) has been strongly supported since retiring to the Shadwell stallion barn, covering a debut book of 167 mares followed by books numbering 120 in 2024 and 165 earlier this year. He has been visited by 21 top-flight winners in that time, as well as 21 Group 1 winner-producing dams. His fee has been trimmed from £65,000, having stood his first two seasons at £80,000.

UK: Diego Velazquez heads new National Stud roster

The National Stud has confirmed its five-strong stallion roster for 2026, headlined by new resident Diego Velazquez (Frankel) at £17,500 (approx. AU$35,260). The National Stud's general manager Joe Bradley said: “Our stallion roster for 2026 offers real choice and value for breeders at every level. Rajasinghe and Lope Y Fernandez are making a mark with their progeny on the track, and Stradivarius has had fantastic results in the sales ring. We were delighted with the reception Bradsell received last year, and he has let down beautifully coming into his second season. Diego Velazquez adds another dimension as a son of Frankel with elite Group 1 form, proven toughness, and an exceptional physical to match. His addition underlines the depth and quality we’re building at the National Stud.”

UK: Big rise for Study Of Man at Lanwades

Study Of Man (Deep Impact) heads the Lanwades Stud roster for 2026 at a new perch of £35,000 (approx. AU$70,515), up from £25,000 this year. Joining him on the roster is the top-class Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) who has been given a small trim from £22,500 to £20,000 (approx. AU$40,695).
