Wednesday’s first session of the NZB Ready To Run Sale produced a vibrant day’s trade, with the spend topped by Chinese newcomer Sanxiong Gao, who signed for both top lots alongside Hong Kong-based trainer David Hayes.

Headlining his spoils was Lot 214, a Kiltannon Stables-consigned son of Per Incanto (Street Cry) who was secured for $750,000 after a bidding duel with Bruce Perry.

The $300,000 NZB National Yearling Sale purchase ran a slick 10.41-second breeze up and is out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Aleria, the dam of the Group 2-placed winner War Eternal (Pierro).

Gao had earlier parted with $675,000 for a Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) colt, consigned by Riversley Park as Lot 105.

Hayes told ANZ News that Gao had recently been put in contact with him by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and that the prospect of such a haul had enticed him to attend the sale.

“I wasn't actually coming because Ka Ying Rising is trialing on Friday,” he said. “Mr Gao asked if I could come down and help him pick a few horses out that might be suitable for Hong Kong, and he's got deep pockets. He said don't worry about the budget, so that's music to a trainer’s ears.

“The plan is these horses will go back to Lindsay Park, as Ka Ying Rising did from New Zealand, and they'll be assessed. The most suitable one for Hong Kong will probably go, and the other one will probably race down with the boys [Ben, Will and JD Hayes].

What's On

Hayes credited long-time agent Dean Hawthorne with scouting the pair and said there’s a chance of another purchase on Thursday.

“Dean found a broad selection of horses, and he has worked for me for years, he's been the backbone of the boys’ selection committee. Dean knows what we like and they were two of our favorites, and maybe there's one more tomorrow, and that'll be us done.”

Asked whether the success of Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) had influenced buyer interest from Asia, Hayes said the superstar sprinter had been a valuable flag-bearer for New Zealand-bred talent and helped generate fresh enthusiasm among emerging investors.

“I think no doubt he’s been incredible for business, like Mr Brightside has been for the boys – good Kiwi horses,” he said.

“I feel that it's an exciting new era in China, and there's a lot of diamonds in the rough out there. If you look at Yulong, what he’s done in the industry, you only need to find two or three more of these sorts of guys, and the industry's in great shape. So hopefully there are people out there like Mr. Gao that want to really have a crack.”

Kiltannon owners Mark and Lorraine Forbes were buoyed to sell the top lot for the second consecutive year with the juvenile affectionately nicknamed ‘Potato’, having sold the record-breaking I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt out of Group 1 winner Shillelagh (Savabeel) for $1,650,000 last year.

“The bidding went really quickly and then we were hoping for another bid or two to be the top price and he did it for us,” Lorraine Forbes told ANZ.

“We all loved the colt. He has a great action, did a nice breeze up and took everything in his stride. We give all our draft nicknames and use the first letter of the sire's name as a start; we called him Potato and it stuck. He’s no problem to handle at all and he was very busy during inspections.”

Riversley Park’s Sam Beatson was thrilled with the return on the Satono Aladdin colt, another NZB National Yearling Sale purchase who validated his initial $130,000 price tag.

He is the second foal out of winning Atlante (Fastnet Rock) mare Shezdelicious, a half-sister to Champion NZ 3YO Madison County (Pins) and $1 million The Gong (1600m) winner Detonator Jack (Jakkalberry).

“He’s a big scopey colt with a good brain which we bought off Dave Duley of Landsdowne Park back in January,” he told ANZ.

“Mick Guerin and I bought him and since then he has shown he has ability. As for the result, we were stoked. It only takes two big players to want the same horse.”

The third top lot on the day was KB Bloodstock’s colt by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) out of the Group 3-winning Savabeel (Zabeel) mare Samovare, who breezed up in 10.80s and was knocked down to Patella Bloodstock for $525,000.

“He has been on our radar for a few weeks and after his breeze up we were keen,” Patella director Nick Kneebone told ANZ.

“When we saw him in the skin on Monday that confirmed that we had to have a bid. He is an imposing colt. He has all the attributes necessary to race in Australia. That's the plan at the moment, then maybe to Hong Kong. We'll see.”

Cummings secures speedy Bivouac colt

The quickest breezer of the sale [10.27s] went the way of Hong Kong-bound trainer James Cummings, who forked out $425,000 for Lot 110, the Riversley Park-consigned son of Bivouac (Exceed And Excel).

Cummings, who trained the second season Darley sire to three Group 1 victories, told ANZ News he was delighted to secure the gelding to train for a Hong Kong client.

“He had the bullet gallop in the sale, I loved the way he did it,” Cummings said. “He’s a good, clean, sound horse with a good mind and those are the attributes I’ve come here looking for. I get that bit of extra confidence knowing he’s by Bivouac – I should have a good feel of what we’re working with – and he’s out of a very classy broodmare sire in Shamardal.

“I liked the mix there, and the mechanics were all there, so it’s as good a start as I could hope for.”

The colt – out of the winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Shrill, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Silent Honor (Sunday Silence) – landed within Cummings’ expectations, and he described the market as competitive for the right individual.

“It was right in the sweet spot, I think he was really good there so I’m happy to get him,” he said. “Depending on value we’ll buy more, he landed where we liked. We missed out on a few earlier that were desirable, so we’re just trying to be sensible.

“I think the market is good, there was a period where a few were passed in, the ones we liked I think have been rock solid.”

Cummings expressed excitement over building his stable ahead of the next chapter of his training career.

“I’ll be beginning to train horses out of the stable as soon as June, so there’s plenty of time,” he said.

“I’m excited, it’s going to be a totally different dimension but I just love training horses and running a stable, so I’m looking forward to getting in the swing of it again. That’s the future, in the meantime I’ve got to build the stable.”

Cummings later purchased Lot 194, a gelding by Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) out of Kiltannon Stables draft, for $230,000.

The session began strongly for trainers as Tony Pike and Joe Pride moved to respectively secure sons of Capitivant (Capitalist) and Tarzino (Tavistock) for $120,000 and $220,000.

Topping proceedings early was Lot 9, the Riverrock Farm-consigned son of Sword Of State (Snitzel) who sold to Cranbourne-based trainers Bevan and Richard Laming for $500,000.

The colt was a $320,000 NZB Yearling Sale purchase is out of winning Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) mare O’Carol, who from two to race has produced the Group 2-placed winner Sedaka (Savabeel) and Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) fourth placegetter Suit Yourself (Savile Row) and is herself a half-sister to dual stakes winner Odeon (Zacinto).

“He’s a Guineas colt in my view,” Richard Laming told ANZ. “His breeze up was first class and Chad [Ormsby] does a great job. He had great wraps on the colt. Clearly the colt has ability.

“I had all the solid info I needed and there were a number of good judges on him. He will go to Melbourne this summer and we'll see what happens from there.”

Laming was also responsible for buying the top lot at the Magic Millions HIT Sale last month when he went to $550,000 for a colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

Chad Ormsby, who owns Riverrock Farm with his wife Aliesha, said the result was within expectations.

“He’s a lovely colt, not ours – I wish he was –  but our clients are delighted,” he told ANZ. “I thought he'd make about that money and his reserve was right around there. I am really happy for our clients.”

Te Akau secures Ohukia colt as pinhookers enjoy profitable day

The Ready To Run Sale has been a lucrative well for Ohukia Lodge, who’ve recorded the second highest aggregate for its the past three editions, and Jamie and Chanel Beatson’s operation achieved more success when their Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) colt, bought for $180,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, realised $480,000 to the bid of Te Akau Racing principle David Ellis.

Consigned as Lot 138, the colt is out of Group 3-placed Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Statuesquely, whose granddam Lotteria (Redoute’s Choice) boasts elite-level wins in the Myer Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) and Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

“We thought he was one of the nicest colts we have seen at the Ready to Run for some considerable time,” Ellis told ANZ.

“Just look at the sires in his pedigree. Ole Kirk looks exciting, but look at the line up down his dam line of Medaglia D'Oro, Encosta De Lago, Redoute's Choice and the great Sir Tristram. In my notes I wrote - ‘classy colt, a real racehorse.’”

Ellis has already made plans for the juvenile to contest the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) in February. The Group 3 was taken out this year by Te Akau’s Return To Conquer (Snitzel), who went on to score in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) a month later.

Jamie Beatson was delighted with the colt’s result, describing him as a forward-going type who had attracted strong attention.

“I agree with David, the colt is all class,” he told ANZ. “He’s definitely a get up and go type and will cop a prep now in time for the Matamata Slipper. He has the right attitude.

“I reckon he was out of his box more than he was in it, he was that popular. He will get every chance at Te Akau. A good result for us as we bought him for $180,000 and we had him on the market at $300,000.”

An earlier pinhook came when BMD Bloodstock’s Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt (Lot 70) sold to bloodstock agent Peter Twomey for $420,000, profiting on the $180,000 he brought at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale when selling to Blandford Bloodstock out of Yarraman Park.

It is the third Ready To Run Sale for Barry Donoghue under his BMD Bloodstock banner, the operation selling ten of its 15 to enter the ring last year when his top lot was a Toronado (High Chaparral) gelding who turned $97,500 into $625,000.

The Irish native sold all six of his draft to go through the ring on Wednesday for a combined $1.16 million.

“He was on the market for $300,000 and anything over that was going to be a profit,” Donoghue told ANZ.

“I think they have bought themselves a really nice colt, I loved him. He’s a lovely big, scopey horse, more of a three-year-old type, there’s loads of room for improvement being a November foal. He moved really well and has a good pedigree, and he’s very professional.”

Twomey told ANZ: “I saw him in Melbourne so I knew something about him. As Barry says, there is plenty of improvement to look forward to but he has come on since the yearling sale. He breezed up well.

“My client has quite a few sprinters and was looking for something that could be a Guineas horse and stretch to 2000 metres. The best graduates of this sale have been milers and 2000-metre runners.

“We'd like to keep him a colt if possible since Wootton Bassett is no longer with us. He has a pedigree.”

One of the most gratifying pinhook results of the day came when Kurtis Pertab's $8,000 Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) gelding (Lot 35) made $180,000, selling to Hong Kong.

The colt’s dam is a sister to both multiple Malaysian stakes scorer Volcanic General (Magnus) and Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1600m) winner Alpha Beat, and a half-sister to Group 2 winner Bella Martini (Stratum). He was sourced by Pertab at the NZB National Yearling Sale back in January.

"It's when you buy them that you make your money," Pertab told ANZ.

“I found him here back in January and liked him immediately. I trained his half-brother and I have had a few by Turn Me Loose. They have good minds and he has many good attributes. He will eventually go to Hong Kong but we will get him qualified here first.”

With day one returning an aggregate of $19.23 million for 119 lots sold and the median climbing 33 per cent to $120,000, NZB bloodstock sales manager Kane Jones told ANZ he was satisfied with how the sale opened and optimistic about the momentum carrying into day two.

“We're really, really pleased with day one,” Jones said. “Average and median were particularly strong, and the clearance rate is something we're working hard on, and we know will certainly improve in the coming hours and overnight.

“There was a really diverse, wide-ranging buying bench, and that certainly showed and the horses the buyers identified were certainly very well sought after. All the vendors have been telling us for the last three or four days, how busy they've been and how well inspected the horses have been, and that certainly translated into bidding and buying activity today in the ring.

“We’re really looking forward to day two.”

Coeur Volante fetches $500,000 on Inglis Digital

Coeur Volante (Credit: Racing Photos)

Group 2 winner Coeur Volante (Proisir) is set for a date with Zoustar (Northern Meteor) after she realised $500,000 on Inglis Digital on Wednesday.

The talented mare was bought by Widden Stud, where the champion stallion resides, in association with Bangaloe Stud.

While a decision on when Coeur Volante heads to stud remains undecided, what is known is that she will be sent straight to leading stallion Zoustar.

Widden’s Antony Thompson was excited to have a mare of Coeur Volante’s ability and profile visit Zoustar.

“She’s a beautiful mare with a neat pedigree that had a dynamic three-year-old season especially,’’ Thompson said.

“I’ve seen her on race days and saw videos of her in the lead-up to this sale but did rely heavily on [Inglis Bloodstock CEO] Sebastian [Hutch] who saw her last week and relayed his thoughts to us but it’s really exciting to have secured her.

“Whether it’s this season or next, we’ll let the dust settle before locking anything in like that but when the time does come, we think Zoustar will be an ideal match on both pedigree and type.’’

Bangaloe’s Julia Ritchie added: “I’m in the process of refreshing my broodmare band at the moment and she’s going to be a great new addition.

“I bought a share in Zoustar on Inglis Digital last year and after speaking to Antony and the Widden team, we thought he would be a great starting point for a mare like Coeur Volante.

“My dad and Antony’s dad Bim Thompson were great mates back in the day so this is just the continuation of a long and prosperous friendship and working relationship.’’

For Inglis Digital Business Manager Nick Melmeth, the sale of Coeur Volante was another pleasing result.

“When Rupert [Legh] mentioned to [Inglis Victoria Bloodstock Manager] James [Price] that there might be an opportunity to offer her, we jumped at the chance and we are very grateful to the partners for their support of the platform,’’ Melmeth said.

“Widden are incredible patrons of Inglis and have been supporters of Inglis Digital from the start, so we hope that she is lucky for them.

“It’s a strong partnership with Julia, and all being well we will see a Zoustar yearling out of Coeur Volante come back through an Inglis sale ring in a few years’ time.”

Buyers don’t have long to wait to purchase their next online star, with the Inglis Digital November (Late) Sale opening for bidding on Friday afternoon.

The sale will include a draft from Australia’s leading breeding and racing operation Godolphin, which will comprise of 12 entries including Group 2 winner Corniche (Fastnet Rock).

Buyers have unearthed the likes of subsequent stakes winners Alegron (Teofilo), Barber (Exceed And Excel) and Sandpaper (Snitzel) in past Godolphin drafts and the upcoming sale provides the next opportunity to access their stock.

My Gladiola primed for Thoroughbred Club Stakes

After finishing runner-up in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) is set to return to fillies’ company in Saturday’s Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield, which carries a $1 million purse for the first time. “She’s a good-doing filly – a big, strong thing that has always bounced out of her races really well,” jockey Jamie Mott said. “When this race was put on and was worth a million bucks, if she pulled up well out of the Coolmore they were always going to have a look at it, and she has come out of the Coolmore really well. She's going there 100 per cent.” The John McArdle-trained filly has been partnered by Mott in all seven career starts, producing six top-two finishes. Her only unplaced effort came in this year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). My Gladiola debuted with a Blue Diamond Preview (Gr 3, 1000m) win and later took out the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) during her current campaign. She has drawn barrier one for Saturday’s race, a gate Mott is more confident about than when she faced the same starting position at Flemington for the Coolmore. “It’s quite a big field, so if you’re drawn out, you need a lot of luck anyway, so we know she’s going to get a good cushy run,” the rider said. “We just need a bit of luck getting out.”

Clear Thinking set for The Hunter

Paul Messara is confident he made the right call to skip last weekend’s Hot Danish Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) as he prepares emerging mare Clear Thinking (Dubawi) to tackle the $1 million The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle on Saturday. The six-year-old, who has won five of her seven starts, heads to the race off a brilliant Kosciuszko (1200m) victory in October, when she stormed home from the second half of the field to score impressively. While she has been Group placed, Clear Thinking is yet to register a stakes win, and Messara hopes this weekend’s rich feature can serve as a springboard to that goal. “The way it’s worked out, that’s probably the better race for us,” Messara said. “She has been working very well, it’s 1300 [metres], and it’s not too far from home. “It’s a good prize-money race and the Hot Danish, with the set weights, I thought she’d be better off in The Hunter. Where it falls at the end of the carnival, it’s hopefully a touch softer than some of these very competitive races so we’re hopeful she can springboard off this to other things.” Messara, who trains in partnership with Leah Gavranich, said the mare had come through her Kosciuszko win in good order and would continue to be placed carefully with a view to building her profile. “We’re keen to get her some black type, that’s the key for her, just to nail down her residual value,” he said. “There are a couple of other races potentially for her heading towards December. But also, it will depend on how far we think she is going to run so we’ll just take it race by race.”

Sketch breaks through for first win at Caulfield

Sketch (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained filly Sketch (Brazen Beau) recorded her first career victory when taking out the opening maiden plate (1600m) at Caulfield on Wednesday. The Godolphin-owned filly is out of the Illustrate (Street Cry), making her a half-sister to Blue Diamond winner Daumier (Epaulette). Craig Williams, aboard for the win, said it was a pleasing result for her future breeding profile. "The bigger picture is breeding, so that's a great way to win her maiden by having a city win for her as well," Williams said. Sketch started favourite after showing promise in minor placings at Kilmore and Ballarat over 1200 metres and 1400 metres in her first two starts for the Freedmans, following two earlier unplaced runs for James Cummings.

Jumping well, Williams settled Sketch behind the leaders before finding clear running on the outside turning into the home straight. She proved strongest over the final stages, scoring by 0.75 lengths from Icaro (Needs Further), with Sky Deel (Dundeel) another 1.75 lengths back in third. "She had the nice run, she jumped out of the gates and gave me some options early and she was solid through the line," Williams said. "She had no problem today settling out to the mile, it was a slowly run race and she picked up when I needed her to."

Patterson celebrates breakthrough metropolitan win with Blaze Away

Flemington-based trainer Claire Patterson enjoyed a career-defining moment at Caulfield on Wednesday when Blaze Away (Doubtland) delivered her first metropolitan victory in a Benchmark 64 (1100m). Partnered by Lachlan King, the three-year-old took full advantage of the inside draw, settling behind the leaders before powering through along the rail to score by a length from I’mateez (Capitalist), a younger half-brother to Imperatriz (I Am Invincible). "I'm shaking, it's so good," Patterson said moments after the race. "I think I went a bit shrill at one point, but it was good." King, who has ridden all but one of Patterson’s winners, was equally delighted to share in the milestone. "I've been riding for Claire for as long as I can remember and for the first two or three seasons we were just trying to get a winner, realistically," he said. "But her last year has been really good and we've had a lot of luck the last few months. It's a great family and I'm really happy to ride a winner for her."

Plaintiff makes winning debut

Expensive Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly Plaintiff got her career off to the perfect start when she broke her maiden in a 1200-metre event at Rosehill on Wednesday. Trained by Peter Snowden, the filly defeated Jaegers (Bivouac) by 1.2 lengths under Tommy Berry with Balmoral Castle (Exceed And Excel) finishing a further 0.8 lengths away in third. Plaintiff was bought by James Harron on behalf of her owner John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds for $2.2 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Widden Stud draft. The filly is out of Group 1 winner Prompt Response (Beneteau), herself a sister to juvenile Group 3 winner Prompt Return. “I think she's better ridden quiet, but the track's been playing dynamite up on speed, and she was too short a price to be taking risks, so we decided to take bad luck out and put her in a good spot, Tommy rode her well,” said Snowden. “She’s had a few injuries and setbacks so it’s all about educating her now and we’ll see how far we go this time. It will probably depend on how well she does in the yard, but she's got so much upside to her. She's very, very raw. She's a beautiful type, very well bred, and it’s good to have a nice horse for John Camilleri.”

Ascot on the cards for Yulong stars

Yulong’s star mares Magic Time (Hellbent) and Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) could be bound for Royal Ascot next year, with chief operating officer Sam Fairgray revealing European campaigns are under consideration for both. Fairgray told The Verdict podcast that Magic Time, who was narrowly beaten by Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) in Saturday’s Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), would first be aimed at another autumn preparation before a final decision was made on travel plans. “There is the possibility we might take her over to Ascot for a race like the Diamond Jubilee, or something like that,” Fairgray said. “There are plenty of options for her. We’ll see how she comes up in the autumn and make plans from there. It would be great if we could get her over to Ascot. Even beyond Ascot, a race like the July Cup may suit her, as well.” Yulong is also considering a Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) target for Treasurethe Moment, either in 2026 or 2027. “That would be a great race for her,” Fairgray said. Meanwhile, Fairgray confirmed superstar mare Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) had come through her latest Group 1 win in good order but is likely nearing the end of her racing career. “I think the breeding barn is beckoning,” he said. “I’d be thinking the autumn will be her swansong.”

Mullins hails Melbourne Cup Carnival as world’s best

Willie Mullins has declared the Melbourne Cup Carnival the finest racing festival in the world after returning home from another visit to Flemington this year. “Melbourne is a tremendous meeting,” Mullins told Racing TV. “People ask me what the best meeting in the world to go to and I always say getting to Melbourne. They do it properly with the four days. One on Saturday, you get two days rest, then Tuesday and then another day’s rest before Oaks Day, or as they call it down there – blokes’ day – and then another day’s rest for the Championship race on the Saturday.” Mullins’ runner Absurde (Fastnet Rock) contested the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) for the third consecutive year, finishing eighth behind Half Yours (St Jean). The champion trainer also stayed on for Oaks Day, where he watched compatriot Thomas Carberry celebrate success in the Oaks with Strictly Business. “It was fantastic to be there for Tommy Carberry winning the Oaks,” Mullins said. “I stayed over for an extra day or two and it was fantastic to be there for that.”

Melham handed suspension over cup day incident

Melbourne Cup Day was a career-defining one for Jamie Melham, who became the first female jockey to complete the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double on Half Yours, but it ended on a sour note with a suspension handed down for a later ride. On Wednesday, Melham received a 30-meeting suspension following an incident that saw Blake Shinn fall from She's Got Pizzazz (Zoustar) in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), the race after her Cup win. Melham had been aboard Fancify (Niagara), trained by Michael Hickmott, which finished eighth. Shinn broke his leg in the fall and was unable to give evidence on the day, but the inquiry resumed ahead of Wednesday’s Caulfield meeting, where Melham pleaded guilty to careless riding. Melham had her licence suspended for 30 race meetings with the period to commence on November 16 and expire on December 17. In assessing the penalty, account was taken of her guilty plea, good record and that it was a Group 3 event and the incident resulted in a rider being dislodged."

Mystic Park snaps losing run

Matthew (left) and Michael Pitman (Credit: Race Images)

The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained Mystic Park (6 g Ocean Park - Spirit of Karlu by Dubawi) snapped a year-long losing streak when he landed Wednesday’s TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton. The gelding defeated Sir Albert (Savabeel) by 0.2 lengths with another 1.3 lengths back to Cannon Hill (Ardrossan) in third. Michael Pitman revealed post-race that it hadn’t been a smooth year for Mystic Park since he won last year’s Stewards Stakes (Listed. 1200m) at the cup carnival, making the result all the more satisfying. “It’s a bit of a cliché I suppose, but I set him for this race 12 months ago,” he said. “It’s our third time winning the race and they’ve all been with really nice horses. People don’t know this, but the reason he didn’t end up running in the Telegraph was because he broke his tail just after he won the Stewards. My wife, my son and my staff deserve so much credit, they put so much work in and we were so confident, especially after Ocean Light ran second [earlier in the meeting over 2000 metres]. Diane [wife] said if he could run second, this horse could win and win easily.”

Northern targets beckon for promising juvenile I Am Belle

Andrew Carston is eyeing northern assignments with progressive filly I Am Belle (I Am Invincible) after she made a winning debut over 1000 metres at Riccarton on Wednesday. Ridden by Bruno Queiroz, the two-year-old jumped well and raced three-wide throughout. Favourite Zaharias (Super Seth) loomed large at the top of the straight, but I Am Belle showed determination to edge clear at the 200 metres and hold on for a 0.2 length victory. “I don’t like to rush them in trials, I like them to learn something, and I felt she had improved from her first trial to her second trial,” Carston said. “She is a very unassuming filly, she just does what she has to do, but there is something about her I really like.”A $200,000 Vinery Stud Magic Millions National Weanling Sale graduate, the filly was purchased by Carston from Woburn Farm’s draft at the NZB Karaka National Yearling Sale for owner Glenn Ritchie. The filly’s debut win earned $37,375, a result that puts her on track for qualification towards next year’s $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), a race in which Ritchie’s colours were carried to third by Miss Ziggy (Brazen Beau) earlier this year. “She has taken everything in her stride and I imagine she will continue to do so,” Carston continued. “We might have to venture north at some stage, work our way up the Island and see where we end up.”

Kiwi Magic shines in Riccarton Three-Year-Old Premier

In the shadow of his accomplished dam, Kiwi Magic (Shocking) stamped himself as a three-year-old to follow with a commanding win in the three-year-old premier (1400m) at Riccarton on Wednesday. The Christchurch track was a familiar hunting ground for his mother Kiwi Ida (Squamosa), who won 14 races for owner-trainers John and Karen Parsons, including the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m), Canterbury Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), and Westbury Classic and Manawatu Challenge Stakes (both Gr 2, 1400m). Kiwi Magic had shown promise in four previous starts without breaking through, including a sixth in the War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) on his previous outing. Kiwi Magic raced wide under Tina Comignaghi, moving forward at the top of the straight before gaining the upper hand at the 100 metres, pulling clear to win by 0.8 lengths. Stable foreman Mahipal Singh said he had confidence in the gelding leading into the meeting. "I said to the boss that he could go a good race," Singh said. "We were a little bit disappointed with his last run, he was unlucky and a little bit green. He’s improved quite a bit, he’s young and he’s going really well at the moment."

Sunset Boulevard aimed at stakes targets after Riccarton double

Promising gelding Sunset Boulevard (Eminent) is being aimed at stakes races after completing a winning double at Riccarton Park during New Zealand Cup Week. The Sir Peter Vela-bred and raced five-year-old opened the carnival with a 2000-metre victory and backed up on Wednesday, jumping out as the even-money favourite for an open handicap over 2000 metres. Ridden by in-form local Tina Comignaghi, Sunset Boulevard pushed forward early and settled in the one-one position. Despite being trapped in a pocket turning for home, Comignaghi found a path for him, allowing the gelding to take the lead and hold off Ocean Light (Ocean Park) by 0.8 lengths. The Kevin Myers-trained son of Eminent (Frankel) recorded his seventh win from 19 starts, taking his prize-money close to $180,000. Trackside for the win, the trainer’s son Jason said: "He is putting together quite a few wins now, he is turning into quite a handy horse. He is continuing to improve. I think the extra year on him has suited him and he is starting to come into a bit of form." Sunset Boulevard could line up again at Riccarton on Saturday in a bid for a New Zealand Cup-week treble, but Myers said he could also be aimed at northern targets, including the Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m) in a fortnight. "It [backing up] is a possibility, but we will just have to see how he pulls up, otherwise he might be ready to go back home, there are some nice races for him up north, maybe a Wanganui Cup," Myers said.

Hollie Doyle eyes IJC breakthrough

Hollie Doyle has quickly settled back into life in Hong Kong and is eyeing an International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) victory on December 10 to repay the faith shown in her by the organisers of the annual extravaganza. “I’ve been second [twice] and third [in the IJC], and I haven’t actually won it yet. So I’m really lucky that they keep giving me the opportunity to try again,” Doyle said. “It would mean a lot [to win the IJC] because The Hong Kong Jockey Club have been extremely good to me over the last few years, and it would be lovely to win it.” Doyle, the most successful female jockey in British racing history, finished joint-second with the world’s top-ranked jockey, James McDonald, last year. She also shared second place in 2021, finishing level with Mickael Barzalona, McDonald again and her husband, Tom Marquand, on that occasion. In addition to McDonald (New Zealand) and last year’s winner Barzalona (France), Doyle will compete against fellow Great Britain representatives Ryan Moore (subject to fitness) and William Buick, Joao Moreira (Brazil), Christophe Lemaire (Japan), Umberto Rispoli (USA), Rachel King (Australia) and three of Hong Kong’s top jockeys, headed by Zac Purton.

UK: Golden Horn unchanged at £10,000

Golden Horn (Cape Cross), the sire of dual Group 1 scorer Trawlerman, will stand for an unaltered fee of £10,000 (approx. AU$20,090) at Overbury Stud in 2026. The stallion’s owner Jayne McGivern said: "Golden Horn has every right to command a higher fee next year, especially as he is consistently over-subscribed. But I am mindful of the choices breeders have, and I would rather support breeders by continuing to offer him as the best value available. I am so pleased to be able to thank all of his supporters by holding his fee for a further year at £10,000. It is especially gratifying to note that he already has many mares already booked for 2026, and that flat breeders are returning in significant numbers.”

ANZ News

It might seem a little odd to speak of a run of terrible luck with a mare who’s thrown three stakes winners, but the story of Lovely Jubbly (Lion Hunter) and her offspring is not your usual one.

The 26-year-old is the dam of Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), the 12-time stakes winner including six at Group 1 level.

She’s the mother of London Lolly (Charge Forward), a mare who - also trained by Team Hawkes - won an Adelaide Group 3 and a Moonee Valley Listed.

And now she has a third black type victor, with the very deliberately named Need Some Luck (Rubick) taking Saturday’s Fisher Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington for Peter Snowden.

Three stakes winners from 12 foals. Imagine how she’d have gone if things had gone more her way.

Grey like her father, Lovely Jubly was bought at Magic Millions Gold Coast in 2001 by the late Newcastle-region trainer David Throsby. He had his Woodbury breeding enterprise just outside Maitland, and had a shopping style many a man would admire.

“He went to buy a Lion Hunter because he liked the stallion. And he liked the fact her mother was out of a Vice Regal mare,” says his daughter Edwina, who has carried on the Woodbury breeding operation since David’s death some 13 years ago.

“So he went to buy one horse. He walked in, bought her, and walked out. Was there for about ten minutes. He was very good at identifying good horses.”

Bred by Queensland’s Carnation Lodge, out of multiple Sydney and Brisbane city winner Jaboulet (Vice Regal), the filly had a half-brother in miler Sir Howard (Alannon) who’d already won one of his two Group races in New Zealand, and had three months earlier run third in the prestigious Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Yet David Throsby purchased her for just $36,000. Partly that was because Lion Hunter (Danehill) was a first season sire, but it was a prescient move to buy from the maiden crop that would make him Australia’s champion first season sire of 2001-02.

Throsby had bought well. He trained Lovely Jubly in a stellar first season, in which she took the rich Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) on the Gold Coast and a Doomben Group 3, before the Brisbane top-tier double of the then-Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and the TJ Smith Stakes (1600m), which is now the JJ Atkins.

Lovely Jubly, who went to other stables after that first season, added a Caulfield Listed for Brian Mayfield-Smith before retiring with seven wins and five minors from 19 starts, and a very good for back then total of almost $1.5 million in prize-money.

She went to the breeding barn and, as mentioned, it’s been a tale of highs and lows.

Yes, she threw Chautauqua and two other stakes winners, but some other misfortune dogged her.

“She’s probably been one of the most unlucky mares to have produced good horses, you’d have to say,” Edwina Throsby tells It’s In The Blood.

“She’s had 14 foals. Seven of them have died, out of some terrible luck. There were some good ones amongst them too, but they just had freakish things happen to them.”

John Hawkes was sent Lovely Jubly’s first foal, Cravings (Encosta De Lago). He was a city winner, but was then gelded, it led to an infection, and he had to be euthanised.

Four foals later came You Got The Love (More Than Ready). Also with Hawkes, he ran second at Rosehill at his second start, then went into the sand roll, got too close to the gate, badly cut his leg and couldn’t be saved.

There are others, but you get the picture.

Amidst all this bad luck came a piece of serendipity.

Looking for a sixth mating for Lovely Jubly, the Throsbys had been mulling a return to Encosta De Lago (Fairy King). Coincidentally, he’d been raced by David’s brother Joe, but by 2009 he was a super successful sire standing at Coolmore for $220,000.

Thankfully, a charity auction arose - raising money for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal - in which a service from Encosta was the prize.

“At the time dad had said it was too much money to go back to Encosta De Lago, but I convinced him to spend the money in the auction,” Edwina says. “It was going to a good cause, so that got him over the line.”

The result was another grey - Chautauqua - the sprinter who, sadly after David Throsby’s passing, would become the number one progeny among 26 Group 1 winners in the storied stud history of Encosta De Lagol.

He also represented another twist of luck.

“I’ve kept 13 of Lovely Jubly’s 14 foals, and sold only one,” Edwina says. “You can probably guess which one.”

It’s true, after a private sale, all $8.76 million of Chautauqua’s earnings went to other people, primarily another grey named Rupert Legh.

Chautauqua was of course a hugely charismatic performer, stopping hearts by settling so far back, unwinding finishing bursts perhaps not seen since Bernborough (Emborough).

And his racing career ended equally unforgettably, when he started simply refusing to leave the starting stalls. When he’d done this in six barrier trials in quick succession in 2018, retirement came.

For that personality, we have his mother to thank.

“Chautauqua and Lovely Jubly were son and mother but they were twins really - very similar,” Throsby says. “And Need Some Luck is probably the closest to the pair of them in the family, personality wise.

“Lovely Jubly was pretty headstrong - still is, aged 26! I’ve still got her at home, and if she doesn’t want to be caught, you can’t catch her. She’ll do what she wants to do. She’s still roaming the beautiful paddocks with the siblings I’ve retained that have retired, and she’s enjoying life. She is the boss though.”

After Chautauqua’s year-older half-sister London Lolly, more bad luck - or bad ability - continued to pepper Lovely Jubly’s breeding story until in 2019, Throsby devised a final mating for the old grey mare, who by then was 20.

Keen to try for another Chautauqua, but with Encosta De Lago five years retired, she opted for a son of his who was standing at Coolmore at the time, Rubick.

“It took me 14 goes to realise what worked,” she says. “As a breeder you try to get it right. It’s a bit of a guessing game, but the Encosta De Lago cross had worked the best, so I went down that line.”

The colt arrived, Throsby would retain this one and send him to Snowden. She just needed a name.

“It was going to be Lovely Jubly’s last foal. I thought about calling him ‘Lucky Last’, but then I couldn’t do that to him. What if he kept finishing last?” She says.

“But I thought ‘Need Some Luck’ summed everything up. We were due for some. So far, it’s working.”

Now a lightly-raced five-year-old gelding, Need Some Luck has been a model of consistency, with six wins and seven placings from 15 starts.

He graduated to stakes grade last Brisbane winter, and ran second both times, in Listed class. But if that raised fears of more frustration, they were allayed with his powerful 1.75 length win in that grade at Flemington, on a Heavy 8.

“I’m thrilled to have another stakes winner out of the mare,” Throsby says. “He’s been well trained and well placed and will only get better.

“My dream would be to win a Group 1 with him of course, though that’s very hard to do. But the more I watch Saturday’s win, the better it looks. He likes the soft tracks, but Brisbane’s tracks were very hard in the winter.

“But it’s all about maturity for him. It’s up to him. He’s got the ability.”

Putting Lovely Jubly to Rubick - as opposed to Encosta De Lago - resulted in Need Some Luck carrying double Danehill (Danzig). It’s also in the least-preferred way, statistically, as a double male at 4m x 3m - via Rubick’s damsire Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill) and Lovely Jubly’s second sire - though it doesn’t seem to have blunted him much.

The only other bit of inbreeding comes from his two sirelines of Northern Dancer (Nearctic), at 4m x 5m. Overall, the great stallion is there in ample portions at 4m, 7f, 6m, 6m, 6m x 5m, with just the one spot in the bottom half.

Northern Dancer’s blue hen dam Natalma (Native Dancer) is the most-repeated female, with eight mentions mostly in the seventh remove and all bar one on Rubick’s side. Selene (Chaucer) has seven spots, again with only one of them coming in the dam’s half.

Hyperion (Gainsborough) is the dominant sire, with 15 mentions.

What also stands out about the pedigree is the longevity of its tail female line. The last four generations span 64 years! Mostly it’s because fourth dam Mordello (Copenhagen) was 18 when she had third dam Avadell (In The Purple), and Lovely Jubly was 21 when she threw Need Some Luck.

Time has moved on elsewhere. Chautauqua entered a new career in the show world. Rubick went to Victoria’s Swettenham Stud for a few seasons but - with successful sire sons of Encosta De Lago thin on the ground - he’s now doing his best in China.

Lovely Jubly stopped breeding after Need Some Luck was born in 2020, though Throsby wonders if she underestimated her.

“Looking at her now, I probably retired her too early, really,” she says. “But I thought she’d done enough. Three stakes winners is pretty good, but she might have had more, but for that bad luck.”

Throsby is breeding from a couple of her daughters, however, including London Lolly. She’s had a Sydney city winner in All England (I Am Invincible), and now has a yearling Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly Throsby is very excited about, and a filly foal by State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner).
