Trainer Ciaron Maher and jockey Ethan Brown described Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) as matured “ultimate professional” after the gelding cruised to his third elite success - all of them landed this year - in Saturday’s weight-for-age CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

A raging $1.75 favourite in a seven-horse field, Jimmysstar and Brown ensured there’d be no slip-ups with an authoritative victory, with a length to spare at the finish over the rival most likely to cause an upset, Angel Capital (Harry Angel) at $3.50.

What's On

Bred in New Zealand by Pete and Chrissy Algie in partnership with the redoubtable Per Incanto’s (Street Cry) stud Little Avondale, Jimmysstar was a serious piece of work in progress early on.

He won five straight from his second start onwards, the first two of them before his switch west of the Tasman as a spring four-year-old. He won twice more last spring, including his stakes breakthrough in Caulfield’s Weekend Hussler (Listed, 1400m), and announced himself among the best sprinters in the country last February with a barnstorming finish to lift the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m).

Yet he was still learning his craft through those first 15 starts, despite them netting eight wins.

More lately, though, Jimmysstar had become the complete package, blooming into one of the finest few horses in the land. That’s been shown through his second top-level success in last April’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), his third in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), his next-start victory in the bizarrely-named $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m), and now his Orr triumph, on a soft 7 Caulfield track.

Asked if Jimmysstar was his favourite horse, Brown - who’s been aboard for his past nine starts - said: “By far.”

“He’s such a beauty. It’s well publicised, my love for him, and it’s obvious why. He’s just the ultimate professional.

“He wasn’t easy to deal with early doors. Even when he won the Oakleigh Plate, he was very full of himself.

“But he’s really come of age since then. He’s turned into the ultimate professional and his races are showing that.”

With some shrewd tactics possible to beat the favourite in a small field, Brown stayed away from the fence in sixth spot in the run, with Angel Capital trailing him, two lengths last under Ben Melham, giving Jimmysstar a curiously large head start.

Jimmysstar peeled four wide turning for home, setting after the leader and $5.50 third-favourite Evaporate (Per Incanto). He reached the front at the 150 metres, leaving gallant four-year-old Angel Capital an impossible task to reel him in. Evaporate hung on for third.

“I believed I was on the best horse and rode him accordingly,” Brown told Racing.com. “He began really well, and I even thought halfway up the hill, ‘Woo boy, come back’.

“Once that rush came across [from the outside] he relaxed beautifully in what was a good tempo. They came up for air a little bit down the side and then they quickened, and I had to be on top of that. He does hit a flat spot. I just had to get him through that, and he sort of felt Angel Capital there and that helped him.”

With his earnings reaching $6.68 million through his 11th career success in the $1m Orr, Jimmysstar will now be spelled, with Maher forecasting another tilt at The Everest next October, after the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and All-Aged Stakes in the autumn.

“I’m absolutely rapt,” Maher said.

“I thought he would do that to that field today. I was just rapt with him all week. The horse and the jockey have grown a lot in confidence in the last two years.

“I was very comfortable watching the whole thing actually. He looked like he was in the driver’s seat the whole way, and that he was.”

Maher paid tribute to his stable staff, the ownership group which is led by Ozzie Khier John O’Neill and which still has the Algies involved, and to the Melbourne Racing Club for moving the Orr from its traditional autumn scheduling to this relatively new Group 1 raceday day. That came as the club returned the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) to their customary pre-Caulfield Cup slots.

“It fits well. They got a crack field - they’re all Group 1 horses, or a lot of them,” Maher said. “It’s a beautiful day, huge crowd, and I’m glad we were able to win it.”

Jimmysstar is the third of five foals for Anniesstar (Zed), a Listed winner in New Zealand, who died in 2023.

The mare’s first throw was Jimmysstar’s sister Charm’s Star (Per Incanto), a Group 3 winner who, showing the family’s versatility, was twice Group 1-placed – in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

With three Group 1s, Jimmysstar now ranks as the finest progeny of Per Incanto, who has 35 stakes winners worldwide from 681 runners at 5.14 per cent. In Australia, the 21-year-old has 14 black-type victors from 201 starters, at 6.96 per cent.

The Orr brought Maher his 60th Group 1 - half of those coming alongside former partner David Eustace - and Brown his tenth.

Inkaruna enhances value with another Group win

Inkaruna (Credit: Racing Photos)

Kia Ora Stud scored another black-type success when their homebred Inkaruna (I Am Invincible) enhanced her value with a dominant win in Saturday’s $1 million Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Ridden by the in-form Craig Williams, Inkaruna was allowed to sit three-wide with cover in the second trio, from a tricky draw in barrier seven in the large field of 16 for the three-year-old fillies’ set weights event.

This might have caused some consternation for backers of the $5 second-favourite, particularly since another daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) - My Gladiola - enjoyed the run of the race on the fence to Inkaruna’s inside from gate one as the $1.90 popular elect.

But Williams, who rode two winners on the day, knew what he had underneath him. He rated his mount to perfection in her trailing position and produced her at the 300-metre mark, and while the grey My Gladiola was battling along a rails run, Inkaruna pounced on the lead at the 100m at strode clear to score by 1.5 lengths.

Team Archibald’s Kujenga (King’s Legacy) flew home from midfield to take second at $41, coming close to providing his sire’s second stakes winner amid his first crop.

My Gladiola was 0.1 lengths further back in third, rounding out a strong but frustrating spring of one Listed win and three Group placings, including her second in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

The victory was the second from seven career starts for Inkaruna, after she took Sandown’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) on debut in February.

While trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman weren’t available for comment, Williams was full of praise for Inkaruna, saying her headstrong ways had been well managed by the addition of blinkers before her previous start.

“She's quite a full-on horse,” Williams told Racing.com. “The Patterson’s (clerks of the course) did a great job leading her around there. She was so intense, so ‘on’.

“Stood well in the gates, got a nice start, was able to control where I wanted to. She was a little bit on the bridle and had a nice smooth run.

“The blinkers have worked really well and I had the right horse to win a million-dollar race here at the big Caulfield meeting.

“The grey, the top weight was the horse we all had to beat, My Gladiola - she's a superstar. But we had to just go out there and ride.

“I spoke to Sam this morning in depth about what we want to do with her.

“The first part was to get her out nice and clean, and we were able to do that. We got into a nice rhythm, had the right horse to follow into the race, and then she was really good and strong late.”

Inkaruna continues a successful line for Kia Ora homebreds.

The farm also bred her dam Ravi (Redoute’s Choice), winner of the ATC Sheraco Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in 2017 and the BRC Just Now Quality (Listed, 1300m).

While Inkaruna boosted her value greatly with her second Group win, she came close to building a still richer CV, having run three stakes placings.

She powered home for third in Randwick’s Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at her second start, resumed this preparation with a third in Flemington’s Cap D’Antibes (Listed, 1100m), and came into Saturday’s race off the back of a second in Flemington’s Red Roses (Gr 3, 1100m) on Oaks day.

Inkaruna is the fourth and best of five foals for Ravi, who’s thrown four winners from as many runners including city victors in Pasima (Pierro) - who fetched $1.5m at Magic Millions Gold Coast as a yearling - and Inkaruna’s brother Now Is The Hour (I Am Invincible), who also sold at the Gold Coast, for $675,000.

Ravi now has a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly who’s set to be offered at Inglis Easter Yearling Sale next year, but missed to Captivant (Capitalist) last spring.

Inkaruna is one of 122 stakes winners worldwide for I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Yarraman Park’s 21-year-old triple champion sire who’s now covering his 16th book at a fee of $220,000 (inc GST).

The filly on Saturday became I Am Invincible’s seventh Australians stakes winner of the season - two more than any other sire.

Green Spaces continues Street Boss’s rich vein of form

Green Spaces (Credit: Bjorn Baker Racing/Twitter)

Darley sire Street Boss (Street Cry) continued his outstanding run of success when Godolphin colt Green Spaces won Saturday’s Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) for three-year-olds at Newcastle.

Given an ideal trail sixth on the fence behind a solid pace in the 11-horse field by Rachel King from barrier one, the Bjorn Baker-trained Green Spaces came wide on the turn to mow down the leaders by the 150-metre mark.

While showing some signs of greenness at his sixth start, the colt - a three-quarter brother to Godolphin’s dual Group 1 winner Trekking (Street Cry) - powered clear to win the set weights event by three lengths as a $4 second-favourite.

Brett and Georgie Cavanough’s $51 bolter Bird Whistle (Brutal) ran second, 0.23 lengths ahead of Gary Portelli’s Long Legs (Russian Revolution), who’d led by five lengths at the 600m and did well to hang on for a dash of black type in third. Yulong’s Grand Prairie (Written Tycoon) was fourth as $3.90 favourite.

The 21-year-old Street Boss, now covering his 16th Australian book at Darley Northwood for $66,000, has been on fire this spring.

He’s had three stakes winners of four black-type races in the past four weeks, including Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Tentyris, who’s won twice at stakes level in that time.

Calamari Ring became Street Boss’s fourth stakes winner of the season by taking the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) last Saturday at Flemington, while Green Spaces on Saturday made it five.

Only I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) has more stakes winners this season, with seven.

Street Boss went into Saturday sitting eighth on the Australian general sires’ table - two rungs better than his personal best finishing spot, achieved in 2022-23. The former shuttle stallion now has 85 stakes winners worldwide.

Baker's racing manager Luke Hilton said Green Space’s previous-start win in Benchmark 64 (1625m) class at Wyong - one of three victories amid six starts - had given the horse confidence going into Saturday, and predicted he’d succeed over further than the 1600 metres.

“He struts out at home like he owns the joint,” Hilton said. “I think he's going to get a trip and I think there are better things for him in the autumn."

King, who’s ridden Green Spaces in four starts, agreed there was more improvement ahead for the colt.

“He's a lovely horse. He's got that great, natural ability, he's got a fantastic attitude, and he's still learning,” King said.

“He hit the front and still had a wander today. I felt like, if something had come to him, he had plenty more there. I like a lot about him.

“He is becoming more professional every time he steps out so if he keeps going on the upwards trajectory that he is, I don't know where he will end up.”

Green Space’s triumph also continued a golden spring for Godolphin as their recent shift to spread their horses through nine different stables continues to pay dividends.

Aside from Tentyris’s Coolmore, Sheikh Mohammed’s empire claimed another elite success at the Melbourne Cup carnival when the Ciaron Maher-trained Observer (Ghaiyyath) took the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

Prior to that in Sydney, Chris Waller’s Beiwacht (Bivouac) won the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) for the royal blue army at Rosehill in late September, while Joe Pride’s Attica (Lonhro) then took the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Green Spaces comes from an esteemed line of mares.

He’s the seventh foal of the Darley-bred Outdoor (Redoute’s Choice), a three-time provincial-winning daughter of Serenade Rose (Stravinsky), winner of six stakes races - three Group 1s and three Group 2s - including the VRC and AJC Oaks double in 2005-06.

Outdoor’s first foal was Trekking - winner of the BRC Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) in 2019 and the SAJC Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) a year later.

The mare followed a year later by throwing Winnie Star (Medaglia d’Oro), who was exported to win the Macau Derby Trial (Listed, 1500m) in 2020.

Outdoor also threw Darley’s Plymstock (Ribchester), who was Listed-placed.

She now has a yearling colt by Pinatubo (Shamardal) and was covered last spring by Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

Morning Briefing

Australia

Ten for Time Test

Proved (Credit: Racing Photos)

Former shuttler Time Test (Dubawi) scored his tenth individual stakes winner when the Enver Jusufovic-trained Proved (5 m ex Out To Impress by Shamexpress) took out Saturday’s How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. Having won her first five starts, Proved was last seen surrendering her unbeaten record when finishing fifth at Bendigo, but she returned to winning ways with a narrow win over Aviatress (Smart Missile) under Carleen Hefel. She’s Bulletproof (Shooting To Win) was a further 0.2 lengths away in third. Bred by Windsor Park, Proved is out of Out To Impress (Shamexpress), an unplaced half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning champion Monaco Consul (High Chaparral). Time Test shuttled to Little Avondale for six seasons, but did not return in 2024, after he was relocated from the National Stud to Turkey in the northern hemisphere.

Proved pleases Jusufovic

Proved was bought by Enver Jusufovic at Windsor Park’s 2022 edition of their popular Rugby, Racing and Beer sale for just NZ$11,000 and her trainer was delighted with her breakthrough Group win on Saturday. “She’s terrific for an $11,000 purchase,” Jusufovic said. “A lot of first time owners in this mare, and a big thank you to Mick Moran from Windsor Park Stud who told me to buy this horse. She’s had seven starts for six wins. Her first-up run [fifth at Bendigo on October 26] perhaps may have looked a bit disappointing, but she pulled up with a slight issue and things didn’t go her way. Carleen Hefel galloped her during the week and she is riding really well at the moment. I had another option tomorrow, but chose to run today to give it a try. It just all went well. I’ve always rated her on a par with New York Lustre, who obviously won a Group race on Derby Day.”

Rumbled Again defends Summoned Stakes crown

The Michael Trotter-trained Rumbled Again (8 m Night Of Thunder - Adulate by Flying Spur) successfully defended her Summoned Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Ridden by Craig Williams, the eight-year-old stayed on stylishly to beat Blindedbythelight (Shamus Award) by 0.1 lengths. Barbie'sdreamworld (American Pharoah) came home a further 0.4 lengths away in third. Trotter felt most of her runs this time in had been great, with the mare flying under the radar. "As usual, she flies under the radar and no one gives her any credit,” said Trotter. "Her runs in all her races this time in have been super except the last run here with the hard track. She just hasn't had any luck. Firming tracks and not being able to get the right position in runs, I absolutely felt she'd win a nice race this time in. I felt that two weeks ago at The Valley but we were never in the race, unfortunately. She had really good sectionals late and she ran well at Flemington on Thursday [Oaks Day]. She was two lengths closer than she was last year so it was just a matter of getting everything right. We got there and Craig got her out, fortunately, and we got the result. I said to Craig, you just do you."

Nine for Hellbent

Boston Rocks (5 g ex Spurs And Sashes by Flying Spur) became the ninth individual stakes winner for Yarraman Park’s Hellbent (I Am Invincible) when taking out the Village Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Trained by Matthew Dale, the gelding kicked clear in the late stages under Michael Dee to score by 1.5 lengths over Hedged (Capitalist), with Beast Mode (Better Than Ready) a further 0.06 lengths behind in third. Bred and sold by Segenhoe Stud, the gelding was a $100,000 buy for Kurrinda Bloodstock and Singleton Racing at the 2022 Inglis May Yearling Sale. He is the first stakes winner out of winning mare Spurs And Sashes (Flying Spur), who has produced five to race for five winners. Spurs And Sashes herself is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Vivi Veloce (More Than Ready) and Group 2 winner Sabatini (Street Boss). Hellbent stands at Yarraman Park Stud in the Hunter Valley for $38,500 (inc GST). Boston Rocks’ dam Spurs And Sashes - who was a $2,750 an Inglis Digital Sale purchase for the operation’s Glenn Burrows - resides at Willow Park Stud and is in foal to Brutal (O’Reilly). Willow Park Stud also sold Acing Shamrock (Fastnet Rock), the dam of the runner-up, for $340,000 to Yulong Investments at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2019 and in are turn of event Burrows’ operation also also sold Where It All Began (Exceed And Excel), who produced the third-placed horse, to Peter Moody for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Yearling Sale in 2013.

Taken makes winning return

Taken (Ardrossan) made a successful return to the track on Saturday when he landed a Benchmark 84 (1400m) at Caulfield. Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, the gelding stayed on bravely to beat Catoggio (Written Tycoon) by 0.1 lengths with a further length back to Stylish (Lonhro) in third. Taken has now had ten starts for five wins, five placings and $381,860 in prize-money, and he is pleasing his trainers with his progress through the grades. “Very good,” Kent Jnr said. “Underdone only had one trial, so we were concerned with fitness, and then he got close to three-wide, four-wide, so a very good win. He’s an unassuming customer. We were worried early on as to whether he would get a strong 1400 metres, but he just keeps strengthening, and to improve from three to four, you need to bulk up, and he definitely has. We knew he was going super, just with all the rain he missed a trial. They don't usually win off one trial, but he's a nice horse. He's had a faultless campaign, really. The ceiling's untapped. He likes a mile better, I think. Very good start to his preparation. No real plans, just to go through the ratings. I think he’ll probably go 1400 metres next start and then go a mile third up, but there's no real plans for him.”

Pozman breaks through at Caulfield

Gracie's Rain (Credit: Racing Photos)

Emily Pozman seized the initiative early aboard Gracie’s Rain (Akeed Mofeed) in the first race at Caulfield on Saturday, driving her to the lead and never looking back. The pair cruised home to claim the Benchmark 74 (1000m), delivering the 27-year-old apprentice her fifth city win and her first at Caulfield. “Barrier 12 was a little bit of a query because there was some inside pace,” Pozman told Racing.com. “But out of the chute here we had all the time in the world to get her into a happy place, and I don’t think anyone was getting in front of her today.” The victory carried extra emotion for trainer Michael Huglin and Gracie’s Rain’s connections. The mare raced in the colours of the late bloodstock agent Mark Hoare, who passed away last year. Part-owner Darren Mitchell said the group agreed to keep Hoare’s colours as a tribute. “They are his colours,” Mitchell said. “A few of us were involved with her dam, Long Face Grace, and now her daughter’s doing us proud. Hoarey ran Pacific Bloodstock and we raced a number of horses with him. This will be the last one to run in his colours – she’s doing him proud.”

Skippers Canyon finishes strongly for Caulfield success

Next month’s Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m) is on the radar for Skippers Canyon (Belardo) after he collected his second Australian victory in come-from-behind style in a 1700-metre handicap at Caulfield on Saturday. Owned by OTI Racing, Skippers Canyon was ridden patiently by Lachlan Neindorf and was among the last to come around the home turn. Neindorf unleashed him down the outside of the Caulfield home straight and he reeled in Sigiriya Rock (Alabama Express) and Nearing Liberty (Impending) to win by 0.3 lengths. Stokes confirmed that Skippers Canyon will now be set for the Pakenham Cup in four weeks’ time. “He’ll be aimed for that,” he said. “He’s come here and good order today. We told Lachie, ‘Whatever you do, don’t bomb the start.’ He’s got a real habit of doing that, this horse. Lachie’s gone to Plan B and given him a bit of room with a nice turn of foot. He’s a very athletic horse, so he doesn’t take a lot of work. He’s clean-winded, which makes my job easy. He can go on any ground, so that is a plus. He’ll run here in two weeks’ time, stepping up to the 1800 metres, and then on to the Pakenham Cup.”

85 for Street Boss

Darley’s in-form stallion Street Boss (Street Cry) continued his brilliant run when supplying his 85th individual stakes winner courtesy of the Bjorn Baker-trained Green Spaces’ (3 c Outdoor by Redoute's Choice) victory in Saturday’s Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Newcastle. Bred and raced by Godolphin, the colt hails from a typically deep family, being out of the three-time winner Outdoor (Redoute’s Choice), making him a three-quarter brother to dual Group 1 winner Trekking (Street Cry), while he is also a half-brother to Listed winner Winnie Star (Medaglia D’Oro). Outdoor is a daughter of dual Group 1 winner Serenade Rose (Stravinsky). Standing at Darley’s Northwood Park base for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST), Street Boss was enjoying his seventh stakes winner of the season and the cohort is headed by Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tentyris.

Coal Crusher takes out The Hunter

The Joseph Pride-trained Coal Crusher (Turffontein) regained his crown in The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle when he proved too strong for his rivals in Saturday’s $1 million contest at Newcastle. The gelding landed the race in 2023 and he chalked up his second victory in the 1300-metre contest when defeated Accredited (All Too Hard) by 0.7 lengths with another 0.3 lengths further back to Brudenell (Russian Revolution) in third.

Asterix shines in The Beauford

Asterix (Tavistock), winner of the 2022 New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), returned to top form and scored his first Australian victory in The Beauford (2300m) at Newcastle on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained gelding showed signs that he might be finding form with a close last-start fifth in the $500,000 St Leger (2600m) at Randwick on October 18, and his stamina and class were on full display on Saturday as he outstayed his 11 rivals in the hands of jockey Jason Collett. “I thought his run was great the other day in the St Leger,” Collett said. “It was just a slow-run race. He led the start before that and it didn't work one bit, so last start we tried to make sure he did things right, which he did, and he found the line great. His trial was good leading into this and when I had the gate today, I was able to use it and put him in a close enough spot which gave us our chance. He's won a New Zealand Derby. He's got the credentials there and this will no doubt build confidence.”

Meridiana impresses at Newcastle

Expat New Zealand trainer John Sargent expected a strong showing from Meridiana (Perferment) at Newcastle on Saturday, and that was exactly what he got in the Lees Racing ‘Legend’ Mile (1600m). The New Zealand-bred mare was heading into the Benchmark 78 handicap after a last-start second in the $500,000 Four Pillars (1500m) at Rosehill on November 1. “She was a bit stiff in that race,” Sargent said. “She couldn’t get out when we wanted to and it cost her the race, because they weren’t really coming from the back. She seemed to have improved with the run, she was only second-up that day, and this looked like a nice race for her over a mile at a big track. We’ll see after this whether she carries on for another one or goes for a break.” Meridiana was sent out as a $2.15 favourite and lived right up to those expectations in the hands of jockey Jason Collett. After settling in midfield the four-year-old chimed in with a smart turn of foot in the straight and went on to win by just over a length.

Seeiaye gets the job done in style

The Peter Snowden-trained Seeiaye (Russian Revolution) produced an impressive performance to break his maiden at the first time of asking in Saturday’s Max Lees Classic (900m) at Newcastle. The colt defeated Mystical (Exceed And Excel) by 1.7 lengths with another 0.9 lengths back to Pomelo Chamomile (Maurice) in third. Purchased by Musk Creek Farm from the Fairhill Farm draft for $27,500 at the Inglis Australia Weanling Sale, the colt was then bought by Capri Racing & Syndication and his trainer for $65,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. Seeiaye is out of the unraced mare Blue Blazers (I Am Invincible), herself a sister to Group 3 winner Super One. Snowden said they would now consider aiming the colt at the rich Magic Millions raceday next year. “All in all he handled himself well today,” he said. “He was a touch slow to jump and then natural pace took him right through to where he wanted to be. Josh [Parr] never moved on him until the 300-metre mark and then he gave another good kick again. He’s a Magic Millions horse so that will be in our mind with what we do with him from here on. Whether he has another run now or a little freshen up before a run or two, but we’ll wait until next week to make a decision.”

Five for Exceedance

Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), a resident at Vinery Stud, chalked up his fifth individual stakes winner when the Dan Morton-trained Pure Excess (3 f ex Pure Purity by Perfect Soul) triumphed in Saturday’s Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ascot. The three-year-old filly defeated Talkanco (All The Talk) by 0.1 lengths with another 2.5 lengths back to Fine Star (Fierce Impact) in third. Bred and raced by Oakland Park, Pure Excess is out of Pure Purity (Perfect Soul), herself a half-sister to Listed-winning trio Flashy Margaritta (Bold ‘N’ Flashy), Citus (Old Forester) and Bourbon Stritta (Old Forester). Exceedance stands for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

Jokers Grin salutes in the Colonel Reeves

Having landed the Prince Of Wales Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) two weeks ago, the Bernie Miller-trained Jokers Grin (5 g Maschino - Walk In Beauty by Barely A Moment) continued his good form in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Ascot. The five-year-old defeated Oscar’s Fortune (Rich Enuff) by 0.6 lengths with another 2.3 lengths back to Repossession (Sessions) in third.

Storyville adds third Group win to her record

The Grant and Alana Williams-trained Storyville (4 m Overshare - New Orleans by Time Thief) bounced back from her last-start sixth-placed finish in the Asian Beau Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) when she landed Saturday’s R.J. Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Ascot. The mare defeated Demolish (Rich Enuff) by 0.3 lengths with Cosmic Crusader (Maurice) coming home third. Storyville adds this latest win to her other stakes wins in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes and WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m).

Drakaina produces impressive performance at Ascot

Drakaina (5 m Ace High - Justa Secret by Sakhee's Secret) added a second stakes win to her record when she landed the Jungle Mist Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Ascot on Saturday. Trained by Michael Grantham, the mare defeated Cessation (Sessions) by 0.4 lengths with another 0.8 lengths back to Yorga Pride (Pride Of Dubai) in third.

Luana Miss grabs second Listed win

The Trevor Andrews-prepared Luana Miss (3 f Bivouac - Little Bit Ditsy by Bel Esprit) was sent off the well-backed favourite in the Placid Ark Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and she didn’t let her supporters down, winning the Listed contest on Saturday. The filly defeated Sherpa Express (Blue Point) by 0.9 lengths with another 0.3 lengths away to Country God (Playing God) in third.

16 for Better Than Ready

The Ciaron Maher-trained Epic Proportions (5 g ex Commanding Epic by Commands) added a first stakes win to his record when he took out the Keith Noud Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben and in the process provided the Lyndhurst Farm-based sire Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) with his 16th individual stakes winner. The gelding pulled clear in the closing stages to beat Midnight In Tokyo (Kobayashi) by 1.4 lengths with a further length back to Oughton (More Than Ready) in third. Epic Proportions was bought by his trainer for $70,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2022. The gelding is out of Commanding Epic (Commands), a half-sister to the dam of Listed winner Discretion Rules (Alabama Express). Better Than Ready stands for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST).

Another brilliant winner for Hellbent

Yarraman Park’s resident stallion Hellbent (I Am Invincible) continued his purple patch of form when his son Zip Lock got his career off the perfect start in a 1200-metre contest at Doomben on Saturday. Trained by Chris and Corey Munce-trained the colt produced a commanding performance to beat Itchintogo (Sun City) by 1.6 lengths with Magritte (Better Than Ready) finishing another 1.9 lengths away in third. Purchased by Munce Racing and Arthur Hoyeau for $160,000 from the Yarraman Park draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, the colt is out of dual winner Honolulu Lass (Hinchinbrook), herself a daughter of Group 2 scorer Velasco (Flying Spur), who is also the dam Group 3 scorer Debellatio (Smart Missile) and stakes winner Devoirs (Dehere). This is the second juvenile winner for Hellbent in as many weeks and follows on from Revengeance in last weekend’s Golden Gift (1100m). Away from the two-year-olds, Hellbent has sired three stakes winners this season and he is standing for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Third for Belardo

Belardo (Credit: Bearstone Stud)

Former Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) brought up his third individual top flight winner when the Pam Gerard-trained Romanoff (3 g ex Tsarina Belle by Stravinsky) took out Saturday’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton. The gelding was bought by Ballymore Stables, Paul Moroney Bloodstock and Catheryne Bruggeman for NZ$75,000 out of Haunui Farm’s Book 2 draft at the New Zealand National Yearling Sale last year. Romanoff is out of the Listed-placed winning mare Tsarina Belle (Stravinsky), making him a half-brother to Listed winner La Flora Belle (Iffraaj). Tsarina Belle is a half-sister to the dam of multiple Group 1-winning champion Melody Belle (Commands). Belardo shuttled to New Zealand for six seasons but did not return in 2023.

13 for Satono Aladdin

Rich Hill Stud resident Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) sired his 13th individual stakes winner when the Kevin Myers-trained Bozo (5 m ex So Ard by High Chaparral) landed Saturday’s New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Riccarton. The mare defeated Notabadspillane (Time Test) by 3.5 lengths with another 1.3 lengths back to Canheroc (El Roca) in third. Bozo is a daughter of So Ard (High Chaparral) and she is herself a half-sister to Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Even So (Camelot). Further back this is the same family as multiple Group 1 winner Dr Devious (Ahonoora) and Group 3-winning pair Royal Court (Sadler’s Wells) and Archway (Thatching). Satono Aladdin is standing for a fee of NZ$45,000 (plus GST). “This is a special win,” Myers said. “We set horses for these races in November from as much as six or 12 months out. We scratched this horse on the middle day of the carnival on Wednesday to give her the best chance of winning this race today, once it looked like there would be some rain around. Our confidence kept growing, the more rain we got. Tina [Comignaghi] gave her a great ride. We thought, with a bit of pace in the race, they would end up going quite slow late in the race in these track conditions. We just wanted to get her to the outside and see if she could finish over the top of them. From the 1000 metres, once she started picking runs in between horses, I was starting to grow in confidence. She looked to be travelling pretty well, and then she was just too strong for them in the end.”

Nine for Ghibellines

White Robe Lodge stallion Ghibellines (Shamardal) sired his ninth stakes winner on Saturday when Inflamed (6 m Ortem Fire by Gallant Guru) took out Saturday’s Lindauer Stewards Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton. Trained by Brian and Shane Anderton, the mare travelled out the back in the early stages and after being pulled wide in the home straight to beat Te Akau-owned pair Trobriand (Kermadec) and Insatiable (All Too Hard), who finished second and third respectively. A true product of the Anderton family’s White Robe Lodge breeding operation, Inflamed was bred by Brian Anderton and his late wife Lorraine and races in the same ownership. She is a daughter of their stakes-winning mare Ortem Fire (Gallant Guru) and has now won six of her 29 starts and over $239,000 in prize-money. Shane Anderton admitted that the initial plan had been to have the mare up on the pace but that option was taken away when she was tardy from the barriers. “The plan was to be on the pace, but she just fell out of the gates,” Anderton said. “What a great finish she had though, which was pretty exciting. When the rain came it didn’t do her any harm as she goes on most ground. Everything we have put Donovan on has gone alright and he is a very good rider. Dad [Brian] is at home and he will be very excited.”

Agera grabs maiden Group honours

Agera (6 g Complacent - Shelly Bee by Pentire) took the leap into weight-for-age company in his stride when he landed Saturday’s Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). The $150,000 feature capped an incredible rise for the gelding, who came into his six-year-old season with 18 starts to his name for two wins, eight placings and $81,490 in stakes. From eight starts this season, Agera has recorded six victories and has added $259,500 to his career earnings. He began his breakthrough season with back-to-back wins on the Cambridge synthetic track in August, followed by a sixth under 62 kilograms in a Rating 75 (1600m) at Ellerslie in early September. Tony Pike stepped Agera up into open company for a 1600-metre race at Te Rapa on September 14 and came away with another win, followed by a fourth in the Russell & Yvonne Green Memorial (2000m) at Matamata on October 4. Agera has been unstoppable since then, winning the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) on October 17, the Feilding Cup (2050m) at Tauherenikau on November 1, and now the Tauranga Stakes. “He’s won six from eight this season and has found a real purple patch of form,” Pike said. “To step up to weight-for-age today and win again is remarkable. He’s really had a fantastic season.”

Rosso stakes long-term Cup claims

The Irish-bred Rosso (Camelot) showed he will be a force to be reckoned with in some of the major staying races in New Zealand left to come this season when he took out the Rating 82 Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Premier (2600m) at Riccarton with ridiculous ease on Saturday. Trained by Michael and Matthew Pitman and ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, the five-year-old pulled effortlessly clear to beat Moussaieff (Redwood) by 5.5 lengths with another 0.4 lengths back to Steal My Thunder (Reliable Man) in third. “He has just jogged in,” Matthew Pitman said. “We were confident the first day, but from a wide barrier he settled back on a muddly-run speed and was doing good work at the finish. We knew getting up to 2600 metres was the key and that bit of rain we had overnight was no trouble for him as he has a lot of class. We will have to put our thinking caps on now as there are races like the Remutaka Classic and Wellington Cup at Trentham and an Auckland Cup further down the line. We will have to see how he pulls up, but a trip north is definitely on the cards.”

Rising Star lives up to her name with Tauranga upset

Owner-trainers Tim and Margaret Carter appear to have chosen an appropriate name for a filly they bought for just $700 on Gavelhouse.com. The Carters called their Complacent (Authorized) filly Rising Star, and on Saturday she collected the second win of her short career in the Laser Plumbing Waihi Beach 3YO (1400m) at Tauranga. Rising Star headed into the $40,000 race on an upward trajectory, having opened her winning account in a 12000-metre maiden at the same venue two weeks ago. The filly showed a blistering turn of speed to beat Yamato Satona (Satono Aladdin) by 1.3 lengths with another 0.8 lengths back to Happy Youmzain (Hello Youmzain) in third. The Carters will now look to raise the bar with Rising Star, with the Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day looming as a potential target. “We deliberately decided to keep her close to home in this campaign,” Tim Carter said. “We’ve got some nice three-year-old fillies’ races coming up in the north now that we can look at, up around the mile. If everything goes well, we could potentially point her towards the New Zealand Oaks a bit later on. She does look like an Oaks type of filly.”

Asia

Eight for Real Steel

Former Arrowfield shuttler Real Steel (Deep Impact) supplied his eighth individual stakes winner when Admire Quads (2 c Date Line by Zoffany) came out on top of a close finish in Saturday’s Daily Hai Nisai Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Kyoto. Trained by Yasuo Tomomichi, the colt narrowly defeated Cavallerizzo (Saturnalia) by a head and that pair pulled five lengths clear of the third-placed I Got It (Mozu Ascot). The juvenile was purchased by Junko Kondo for ¥72,600,000 at the JRHA Select Yearling and Foal Sale. He is out of Date Line (Zoffany), a daughter of Group 2 winner Pacific Rim (Singspiel), who is also the dam of Australian Group 3 scorer Paths Of Glory (Mastercraftsman).

First Graded victory for Luxor Cafe

Having previously tasted victory in Listed company, the Noriyuki Hori-trained Luxor Cafe (3 c American Pharoah - Mary's Follies by More Than Ready) produced an imperious display to win Saturday’s Musashino Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Tokyo. The colt finished strongly to beat Costa Nova (Lord Kanaloa) by three and a half lengths with another nose back Bidaaya (Real Steel) in third.

International

32 for Churchill

Coolmore’s former shuttler Churchill (Galileo) scored his 32nd individual stakes winner when the Henk Grewe-trained Lommi (2 c ex La Sabara by Sabiango) took out Saturday’s Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen (Gr 2, 1700m) at Krefeld. The colt defeated True Lion (Amaron) by two and a half lengths with Nitaro (Oasis Dream) another three and a half lengths away in third. Purchased by his owner Eckhard Sauren for €78,000 at the Arqana October Yearling Sale in 2024, the colt out of Listed-placed winner La Sabara (Sabiango), making him a half-brother to German 1,000 Guineas winner (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Lancade and stakes-placed winner Laguna Beach (Zarak). Churchill will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €15,000 (AU$26,697).

State Of Rest (Credit: Newgate)

Rathbarry have trimmed the northern hemisphere fee for their Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) and he will stand the upcoming season for €15,000 (approx. AU$26,697) after two seasons at €20,000. Meanwhile, the farm’s newest recruit, Grade 1 winner Unquestionable (Wootton Bassett) has been introduced to breeders at a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$17,798). The reliable Kodi Bear (Kodiac) has also had his fee clipped to €12,500 after four years at €15,000. The four-strong line-up is completed by Bouttemont (Acclamation), who is standing at €5,000 (approx. AU$8,900) for the third consecutive season.

Romanoff heads Gerard quinella in 2000 Guineas

Romanoff (inside) (Credit: Race Images)

The only thing certain as horses slogged their way to the winning post in Saturday’s New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) was that Matamata trainer Pam Gerard would produce the quinella in the Riccarton classic.

Heavy rain during the day had seen the track reduced to a Heavy9 rating that threw a massive spanner in the works as connections of the 15 runners tried to work out if their horse could handle the downgraded surface and just how competitive they would be.

Gerard was in that camp with the well-favoured Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) and stablemate Romanoff, but she needn’t have worried as the pair went clear at the 200-metre mark to fight out a desperate finish that went in favour of Romanoff by the barest of margins.

Brazilian jockey Bruno Queiroz had Romanoff away well from the start and stalking the pacemakers He Who Dares (Snitzel) and Mission Complete (Ferrando) throughout as George Rooke on Affirmative Action sat one pair further back but out wider as they searched for better ground.

Queiroz and Romanoff stuck closer to the inner rounding the home bend as Affirmative Action swung to the middle of the track and headed off He Who Dares at the 300 metres. The Gerard pair came together with 200 metres to run and set down to a dogfight which went stride for stride to the post.

The issue was only settled several minutes after the runners had pulled up with the judge declaring Romanoff, a son of former Haunui Farm stallion Belardo (Lope De Vega), the winner from his stablemate with maiden galloper Shoma (Contributer) storming into third just ahead of Little Black Dress (Snitzel).

Gerard was a bundle of emotion as she came to terms with what had transpired just minutes earlier.

“I don’t know if I can handle this anymore, it is just too much,” Gerard said.

“Just the whole thing as they are both really nice horses and I think their class has shown [today].

“There is no question that I was really worried about the track and I still don’t think they liked it one bit, but on a wet day Romanoff may always have been the better on it although I honestly thought the other horse had got up.

“My staff at home are just amazing as so much goes into getting here and it is hard on a day when you get a hailstorm and all the work that has gone in you think bloody hell, but we managed to get away with it.

“We just have fantastic owners and the guys from Aussie that are here have never experienced anything like this, but they will definitely be coming back.”

Queiroz, who had ridden 16 Group 1 winners in his native Brazil, was beaming as he celebrated his first New Zealand success at the highest level.

“I just had one dream which was a Group 1 here [in New Zealand] as I have 16 in Brazil and today I am very glad,” he said.

“Thank you to God along with the connections of this horse for the big opportunity.

“It was so close but I’m so glad as I thought I had won as he fought so hard the last 100 metres.”

Bred by Marie Leicester from her Stravinsky (Nureyev) mare Tsarina Belle, Romanoff has now won his second race from seven starts and over $454,000 for a large group of owners.

He was purchased by Ballymore Stables, Paul Moroney and Catheryne Bruggeman for $75,000 from the Haunui Farm draft during the Book 2 sale at Karaka in 2024.

Patch Of Stars shines as Purton fires home treble at Sha Tin

Patch Of Stars (Credit: HKJC)

Patch Of Stars lived up to expectations in the feature Class 2 Lukfook Jewellery Cup Handicap (1200m) and boosted his Four-Year-Old Classic Series prospects with a smart win for Manfred Man and Zac Purton on an eventful day at Sha Tin on Saturday (15 November).

Purton, who bagged a treble to extend his championship lead to 22 wins, spoke cautiously about Patch Of Stars (124lb) drawing a tricky barrier nine in the build-up to the race. But in the event, he was able to manoeuvre the All Too Hard gelding into the box seat before letting down strongly to put away a handy field.

The win sealed a raceday double for Man, after Hollie Doyle had earlier ridden Double Win (119lb) to victory in the Class 4 Lukfook Jewellery Love Is Beauty Collection Handicap (2000m), increasing the veteran conditioner’s seasonal total to 13.

“I think 1200 metres is good for him, because in the Class 3 1400 metres, he was favourite twice and was only fourth and fifth,” Man said. “Back at 1200 metres, he won a Class 3 and was promoted (to Class 2) today and won again, so I think it’s the best distance for him.”

LONGINES Hong Kong International Races nominees Invincible Shield (132lb) and Aeris Nova (122lb) did their claims no harm with strong finishes to grab second and third place, respectively.

Purton also scored on Pierre Ng’s Supreme Agility (130lb), who broke through at the 24th attempt in Hong Kong in the Class 4 Lukfook Jewellery Heirloom Fortune Collection Handicap (1650m, dirt).

“I remember Zac rode him last season when he was just not mature yet,” Ng said. “Now he’s more straightforward. He's been very consistent in the last couple of runs. Luckily, the owner had patience, and he got the win today.

“I don’t think he can do it on the turf as well, but the Brazilian (horses) are normally used to both tracks, so I wouldn’t mind. It just depends.”

Australian Racing Hall of Famer Purton completed his hat-trick with victory in the Class 3 Lukfook Jewellery Night Banquet In Tang Palace Collection Handicap (1600m) aboard the progressive Beauty Bolt (129lb) for Tony Cruz.

Ng’s season hasn’t gone according to plan so far, but the day marked a revival for him as he took home a double to take his tally to six wins.

On The Lash (127lb) held off fast-finishing rivals in the Class 5 Lukfook Jewellery Wedding Collection Handicap (1800m) to deliver Ng’s first victory in four meetings.

The win provided Luke Ferraris with another valuable win in his bid for LONGINES IJC qualification, as he held on by a nose from Richard Kingscote surging late on Cool Blue (121lb).

Kingscote did not have to wait long to open his account for the season. He landed the biggest upset of the day when he got up on David Eustace’s 20/1 shot Loch Tay (125lb) to end his search for a winner at the 105th time of asking in the Class 3 Lukfook Joaillerie Handicap (1650m, dirt).

Salon S (124lb) scored on debut in the Class 4 Lukfook Jewellery Hexicon Handicap (1200m), extending Matthew Poon’s hot run to seven wins from the past seven meetings. Frankie Lor’s Zousain gelding did his racing early to take a healthy lead and was eased down with Mark Newnham’s Super Dragon (122lb) running on for second under James McDonald.

Trainers’ championship-leading Newnham got back to winning ways when Crimson Flash (132lb) took out the Class 3 Lukfook Jewellery Diabling Shimmering Gold Collection Handicap (1000m).

Following an uncharacteristic four-meeting dry spell, the Australian handler had seen his lead at the top of the standings trimmed before the son of Showtime restored it to five wins over David Hayes.

An eventful Class 4 Lukfook Jewellery Miss Hong Kong Love Yourself Collection Handicap (1400m) saw the soon-to-be-crowned 2025 LONGINES World’s Best Jockey, James McDonald, unseated from his mount Aerovolanic (135lb) at the start. Then Cody Mo’s Bucephalas (131lb), whose odds plunged to 7/1 moments before the flag dropped, sliced through the field to claim his first Hong Kong win at his sixth attempt under Matthew Chadwick.

The Class 4 Lukfook Jewellery Ccool Collection Handicap (1200m) was voided for safety reasons after jockey Matthew Poon was dislodged from Dreaming Winner. Both the jockey and the horse were unhurt.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday (November 19).
