Full siblings to Pennyweka (Satono Aladdin), Kovalica (Ocean Park) and Prowess (Proisir), and half-siblings to Ceolwulf (Tavistock), Mr Brightside (Bullbars) and Gringotts (Per Incanto) are among the star lots in a quality-packed catalogue for next year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale.

Marking 100 years of the National Yearling Sale in the country, a total of 1,009 yearlings have been assembled for the sale from January 25-29, including 567 in Book 1, deliberately reduced from last year, which had 661.

What's On

Highlights include Ardsley Park’s Lot 192, a sister to Pennyweka, dual elite winner of the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).

Lot 222 is Curraghmore’s brother to Kovalica (Ocean Park), winner of the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) plus three other Group races, while Lot 387 is Hallmark Stud’s sister to Prowess (Proisir), the dual top-tier heroine of the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2050m) and ATC Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Meanwhile, Cambridge Stud presents Lot 513, a half-brother from the second crop of its young stallion Sword Of State to Ceolwulf (Tavistock), the star gelding bred by the farm who’s won four Group 1s so far.

Surging sire Satono Aladdin has three star lots who are half-siblings to stars of the New Zealand and Australian turf:

Wentwood Grange presents Lot 521, a half-brother to ten-time Group 1 winner Mr Brightside (Bullbars), Phoenix Park’s Lot 549 is a colt from the same dam as $5.5 million earner Gringotts (Per Incanto), and Lot 553 is HGT Bloodstock’s half-sister to Belclare (Per Incanto), dual winner of New Zealand’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Karaka also presents a half-sister by debutant speed sire In The Congo (Snitzel) to exciting sprinter War Machine (Harry Angel), another from the Ardsley Park draft as Lot 336, while Haunui Farm offers Lot 459, a half-sister by Proisir to dual top-level victor Crocetti (Zacinto).

The sale also features progeny of many outstanding mares, including Cambridge’s Lot 265, a colt by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who’s the second foal of 2020-21 New Zealand Filly of the Year Amarelinha (Savabeel).

Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) queen Savy Yong Blonk’s (Savabeel) colt second foal by Super Seth (Dundeel) is presented as Lot 104 from Prima Park’s draft.

And the filly first foal by Russian Revolution (Snitzel) of another elite winner in Two Illicit (Jimmy Choux) is entered as Lot 203 from Trelawney Stud, who also offer a colt first foal by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) of triple Australian stakes winner Zayydani (Savabeel).

Nine first season sires will be represented, headlined by Darley’s nine-time Group 1 winner Anamoe (Street Boss), dual elite victors Jacquinot (Rubick) and Artorius, and dual Derby hero Hitotsu (Maurice).

Anamoe’s ten yearlings include Lot 269, Wentwood Grange’s colt out of dual elite heroine Anabandana (Anabaa) and Lot 449, Jamieson Park’s filly out of Gin Martini (Rip Van Winkle), a dual stakes-winner up to 3200 metres who ran third in the 2022 Australian Oaks.

Proisir (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)

Rich Hill Stud’s 2022-23 champion New Zealand sire Proisir (Choisir) is represented by 63 lots including Trelawney Stud’s Lot 94, a colt out of Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy), dam of Group 1 winner and current Yulong sire Grunt (O’Reilly), sire of recent VRC Oaks winner Strictly Business, and of Group 2 winner Zayydani (Savabeel).

Curraghmore also presents a Proisir half-sister to Group 1 winner Ruthless Dame (Tavistock) and Listed winner Torture (Sword Of State) (Lot 96).

Ten-time New Zealand champion sire Savabeel has 35 lots on offer, while his Waikato Stud barnmate Super Seth has 47.

Cambridge Stud sires are of course well represented, including 50 lots by Sword Of State (Snitzel), 42 by Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) and 33 by Almanzor (Wootton Bassett), while Little Avondale’s star stallion Per Incanto (Street Cry) has 30.

The Book 1 catalogue of 567 yearlings represents a drop of 94 from 661 last year and will be offered over two days - the Sunday and Monday - as opposed to three days in the past.

While 2025’s sale catalogued 426 lots in Book 2, next year’s 442 secondary selections will be split into two divisions. The Book 2 sale will take place on Tuesday, with 281 lots offered, before the reintroduced Karaka Summer Sale on Thursday, in which 161 lots will go under the hammer.

New Zealand Bloodstock managing director Andrew Seabrook said the company was delighted with the quality of Book 1 after its decision to scale back. With 820 boxes at the complex, reducing Book 1 to 567 lots will likely, after withdrawals, allow for all Book 1 and Book 2 yearlings to be housed on-site at the same time.

“We’re thrilled with the quality,” Seabrook told ANZ News. “Given it’s our 100th year anniversary, we wanted to present the best possible catalogue we could so we refined it by 100 lots, and they’ll be sold over two days, not three.

“We’d been thinking about it for a while, and we thought it made sense to try it in our 100th year sale. Now every horse in Book 1 and Book 2 will be on the scene from the start, and they’ll all have the opportunity to be seen by the international buying bench.

“With the desire these days from international people to be away from home for less time, we think a condensed sale is the way to go.

“I absolutely feel a smaller Book 1 has really hit the mark, quality-wise, and I’m sure people will see that when they go through the catalogue.”

Karaka 2025 was slightly flat compared to previous editions, with the market wary early in the year due mainly to wider economic concerns. Book 1 averaged $165,000, down from $168,000 in 2024, both off a 78 per cent clearance rate.

Seabrook said he was confident about achieving more robust results in 2026.

“I’d be disappointed if we didn’t increase the statistics from our last sale,” he said.

“We’re thrilled with the quality of the stallions we have, and again we’ve had another very good 12 months on the track. In 2024-25, New Zealand-breds won 21 per cent of the Group 1 races held in Australia, despite making up only 7.7 per cent of the horse population there.

“So it’s been a good 12 months, and there’s a really positive feel on the ground. Our Ready To Run Sale [on November 12 and 13] was very strong, and the general comments and the numbers of people booking in for January was really heartening.

Sword Of State (Credit: Cambridge Stud)

“Last week’s Ready To Run success has given us great confidence going forward, and I’m sure the pinhookers will have taken confidence from it as well.

“We thought Book 2 was disappointing last year. We think the new format is really going to help Book 2.”

The average for Book 2 in 2025 was $36,000, down from $43,000 in 2024.

Last week’s Ready To Run Sale produced a record average of $156,000, up from $152,000 in 2024.

The week of Karaka 2026 kicks off at Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday January 24 with the Karaka Millions raceday, now worth more than $NZ5 million in prize-money and headlined by the $1m Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) and $1.5m Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) for graduates of the sale.

All yearlings bought at Karaka 2026 are eligible for the Karaka Millions Series including the new NZB Mega Maiden Series which offers $1m in bonuses across 40 maiden races each season in New Zealand.

The Summer Sale is further boosted by a new $200,000 Summer Sale bonus for yearlings purchased this year. For the first Karaka Summer Sale graduate home in both the 2027 Karaka Millions 2YO and 2028 Karaka Millions 3YO, $100,000 will be split evenly between the vendor and purchaser.

Estadio Mestalla to back up in The Gong

Joe Pride will back up Estadio Mestalla (Galileo Gold) in Saturday's The Gong (1600m) after the seven-year-old gelding's sixth placing in The Hunter (1300m) last weekend. Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the son of Galileo Gold (Paco Boy) finished 2.1 lengths behind his stablemate Coal Crusher (Turffontein) in The Hunter, staying on late in the race. "Estadio Mestalla was super coming down the outside late," Pride said. "He'll run in The Gong. He's got a very good record on the back-up." Estadio Mestalla competed at the corresponding Kembla Grange meeting 12 months ago, landing a Benchmark 88 (1600m) event after having failed to make the cut for The Gong. "He missed out last year and he won the consolation with about 62 kilos," Pride said. "Which is what Coal Crusher did before he won The Hunter. He won the benchmark race on the same day."

Price and Kent Jnr seek second straight Cranbourne Cup

Having landed last year's Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m) with Globe (Charm Spirit), Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are hoping that they can repeat the feat this weekend when progressive gelding Sabaj (Manhattan Rain) tackles the Listed feature. The four-year-old son of Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) has four wins from seven career starts and a further two placings. The placed efforts were both runner-up finishes in the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m) and Tobin Bronze Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), while he was a last-start winner of a Benchmark 84 (1600m) at Flemington on November 8. "The Cranbourne Cup is the logical race for him," Kent Jnr said. "A mile, on his doorstep. The timing's good, our only concern would be the tight track. He's a get back, run on, big striding horse." Sabaj had been set to race on Melbourne Cup day before the stable opted to run on Champions Day four days later. "I'm still glad we scratched him on the Tuesday," Kent Jnr said. "It ended up being a soft five only, but I don't think we would have won. We had an inside draw, and by race ten on Cup Day, they were all coming in the middle and the way Persian Spirit won down the outside, we would have been in traffic, whereas the wide draw on Saturday was the perfect set up. We didn't know if he'd get a wet track, but we took the positive view that we're here to learn and find out. He's very progressive, he'll get his chance."

Nadal set to defend The Meteorite

The Ciaron Maher-trained Nadal (Xtravagant) will bid to defend his title in Saturday's The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne, but will need to bounce back from a rare below-par effort in the Fisher Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last time out. The five-year-old gelding ran ninth, beaten over nine lengths, in the Listed event at Flemington, and will need to return to the form that saw him run out a 2.8 lengths winner of the $1 million The Meteorite last year. “The heavy track could possibly have been the difference, although he does like a bit of give,’ Maher told Racing.com. “Maybe it was a bit wet for him, but I was disappointed with his run as we know he’s got it there. His work was good leading into the last race, but he just never showed up. The Meteorite will be a vastly different race, and I am expecting a different result. It’s at Cranbourne with the pace on and at Flemington he was exposed with no cover, and it was probably wetter than he wanted. So, Cranbourne is completely different. There is always pace on. He will be ridden where he lands again and that race shape really suits him. He ran a similar number first-up this prep [to his Meteorite win]. It looked plain to the eye, but his number was similar.”

Private Eye targeted at $1 million Supernova

Eight-time stakes winner Private Eye (Al Maher) will be given another chance to boost his already impressive career prize-money pot after his trainer Joe Pride confirmed the gelding would be headed for the $1 million Supernova (1400m) next month. The now eight-year-old son of Al Maher (Danehill) has amassed more than $12.7 million in earnings from 48 starts, with 14 wins and a further ten placings including a top-level success in the 2021 Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). Private Eye was a last-start fifth in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) having landed the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) one start prior. “This race is the right move for him. He travels so well down to Melbourne and we actually stay at Pakenham. He’s been down twice this year and it has worked really well," Pride told Racing.com. "He is a very tough horse — he has been from day one. He would have made it as a late two-year-old, but they called the races off that day. He has raced right through, and he doesn’t miss a beat — he is an iron horse. He will be champing at the bit by then. He goes so well off the back of these freshen-ups now. 1400 metres looks like his perfect distance — it might have been that way his whole career, but there hasn’t been enough prize-money around for him at the top level until now.”

Nolen hoping to hit milestones

Luke Nolen has set goals to hit key milestones in the near future, with multiple Group 1-winning rider aiming to ride his 900th winner for his long-term ally Peter Moody and also claim his 2000th career winner. Nolen, who was the regular rider of world-famous sprinting mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), rode Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) to success in the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) last weekend for Moody and his training partner Katherine Coleman, taking his winners for Moody to 899 while he currently sits at 1,983 in his career. "I still feel like I've got plenty to offer and I want to ride for as long as I can," Nolen said on the Sadler Sessions podcast. "Not everyone's afforded this luxury, but I want to retire on my terms. Through my 40s, I have had an injury interrupted run of it, but if the next five years I get through pretty well, I could even ride another five years, ten years after that. I want to be the one that determines how I roll out of the game, I don't want to be retired. I want to retire on my terms."

Julius takes out training licence

Following in the footsteps of generations of her family before her, jockey Melissa Julius has taken out her training licence. The Warrnambool-based horsewoman has three horses in work, including a sister to multiple Group 2 winner Just Folk (Magnus) who was bred by her grandfather and trained by her brother Josh. Julius hopes to now have her first runner head to the races next month. "She's the one I'm most excited about and probably the reason I definitely ended up getting my trainers' licence," Julius told Racing.com. "I've named her Our Matriarch after our nana, who passed away just over 18 months ago and she's a female version of Just Folk, who we call Marty, so pretty fierce. That breed they're pretty savage, Marty will have you with his teeth if you're not careful, but I loved working with him and am thrilled to now have her. We sadly lost the mare this year, but we've got her as a four-year-old full-sister and I've got the two-year-old sister as well. I feel like I've been riding more than ever recently and a lot of that has to do with my manager Nik Plant, who I joined up with last year. Dan has also been a massive help and I can't thank him enough for all his support. My plan is to definitely ride the horses that I train, they're my babies at the moment and I'm really excited for what the future will bring and can't wait to have my first runner hopefully before the end of the year."

Rogerson in ICU following Rotorua fall

Waikato apprentice jockey Bailey Rogerson has been placed in an induced coma following a race fall at Arawa Park on Sunday. The 24-year-old rider was onboard Mandalo in The Rotorua Club 1950 (1950m) for her mother Michelle Northcott and was dislodged from her mount near the 400-metre mark after he clipped heels with In A Pickle (Preferment). Rogerson was flown to Waikato Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries. “They flew her up last night from Rotorua and she is in the ICU,” Rogerson’s grandfather, Group 1-winning trainer Graeme Rogerson, said. “She has got fractures to her skull and neck, and she is an induced coma. They are looking at her all the time. She has got feeling in her arms and legs, which is good news.” Rogerson said Bailey’s parents Michelle Northcott and Gary Rogerson are at her bedside. “We can just hope for the best. She is a very tough girl,” he said.

Derby tilt in the offing for Guineas placegetter

Cambridge trainer Paul Mirabelli is now eyeing the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) with Shoma (Contributer) following his third placing in last Saturday’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton. The son of Contributer (High Chaparral) wasn’t wanted by punters in the three-year-old feature, drifting out to a $104 outsider, but that didn’t quash Mirabelli’s hopes. “We have had belief in him the whole way through,” he said. “He has always shown that he has got really good ability. I guess the punters were put off him from last time because he was a bit questionable [when seventh] in the War Decree Stakes. But there was quite a big headwind, and he was outside the leader and he just did it tough the whole race because he was just going that little bit keen.” With the result, Mirabelli was also able to better his previous best placing in a Group 1, which was recorded by Shoma’s dam Big Dreamer (No Excuse Needed), who was fifth in the 2016 edition of the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham. “We trained the mother and she was previously my most successful horse in a Group 1 race, she was fifth in a Captain Cook Stakes, and her son is now my best placing. It has been a good family for me,” Mirabelli said. Shoma will now head to the spelling paddock with some big autumn targets in-mind, including the New Zealand Derby on Champions Day at Ellerslie in March. “He will go to the paddock for a freshen-up when he arrives back tomorrow [Tuesday],” Mirabelli said. “Sam Collett [jockey] said straight after the race that she will ride him in the Derby, so I will hold her to that, and that is the way he will head. It took a long time for her to pull him up on Saturday, he went right around to the far steeplechase fences, so running 2400 metres is going to be no problem for him.”

Perfect Scenario retired

Group 1 placegetter and dual Group 3 winner Perfect Scenario (Iffraaj) has been retired following his unplaced run in the TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton last week. The eight-year-old son of Iffraaj (Zafonic) has been a stable stalwart for Te Akau Racing’s southern base at Riccarton Park over the last couple of seasons and retires the winner of 11 of his 59 starts, with $570,000 in earnings. He was purchased by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis out of Woburn Farm’s 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Yearling Sale draft for $165,000 and has given his syndicate members some great memories over the last few years. Mark Walker, who trained Perfect Scenario in partnership with Sam Bergerson, said he was a key figure in their Riccarton barn and quickly became a stable favourite. “He was a great servant of the stable and so consistent year in and year out,” he said. “He became such a favourite of the stable and in particular he loved racing from our stable in the South Island where he had a great affinity with the tracks at Wingatui and Riccarton. To have him retire as sound as the day he first arrived at the stables is great testament to all the staff that worked with him over the years. He’ll have a really happy retirement and make into a lovely show horse.” Part-owner Michael Ormsby has fond memories racing Perfect Scenario and said he now deserves a great retirement. “He won 11 races and deserves every accolade he gets regarding his retirement,” Ormsby said. “He was a special racehorse and loved by everyone at the stables. He was honest to a tee, and after giving all his owners so many thrills I think it’s a good time to retire him while he’s sound and happy. He’s too good a horse to continue racing when he’s probably just past his best now and especially when he’s carrying top weights because of the Group races he won. He’s been a wonderful horse and everyone loved him. They’re special horses, the ones like Perfect Scenario.”

HK: My Wish seeks top billing in Jockey Club Mile

My Wish (Flying Artie) hasn’t shirked a challenge on his road to the Hong Kong International Races, in fact, he’s passed them all with flying colours, and Sunday’s Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) will be the rising star’s final stepping stone at Sha Tin before he takes aim at the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on December 14. Ferraris has fired out of the blocks with 15 victories across the first 20 fixtures this season – a tally bettered by only Zac Purton (37) – and the South African rider, who is the son of former trainer David Ferraris, attributes My Wish’s ascendance to enhanced physical strength and mental clarity. “He’s put on weight – you can feel it in the mornings and in his races. He’s a lot stronger, which is what we were hoping for after the off-season, and he’s calming down, too. So, he’s turned into a really professional racehorse and it’s showing in his results,” Ferraris said. “You need horses like this in your career, they can put your name up in lights. It’ll be a dream come true if he can do something at the [Hong Kong] International Races, and as well, the race leading up to it.”

HK: Lemaire returns to IJC aiming to replicate fine Japanese form

Christophe Lemaire will be Japan’s representative at the 2025 International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley on December 10, as he returns to compete at the event for the first time in seven years. Enjoying a stellar campaign in Japan, the 46-year-old has claimed 119 wins so far, placing him just behind current leader Keita Tosaki (119 wins) in the jockey rankings as Lemaire has had fewer second placings. The Frenchman will aim to replicate that form at Happy Valley, where he will be appearing in the IJC for the seventh time. He won the event in 2009 (jointly with Ryan Moore and Johnny Murtagh) after finishing second in 2008. “Riding in Happy Valley is always a special time and an exciting challenge,” Lemaire said. “To compete at such an iconic racecourse pushes you to reach your best.” He has enjoyed an incredible November in Japan; securing victory in the Keio Hai Nisai Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Tokyo aboard Diamond Knot (Bricks And Mortar) shortly after capturing the JBC Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Funabashi with Mikki Fight (Drefong), and his remarkable sixth triumph in the Tenno Sho Autumn (Gr 1, 2000m) atop Masquerade Ball (Duramente). “It’s a real pleasure to be selected among this amazing line-up and to represent Japan, one of the strongest nations in horse racing,” he added.

IRE: Al Riffa returns home before HK stint

Last-start Melbourne Cup seventh Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) has taken a detour of his home country before taking on next month's Hong Kong International Races. The Australian Bloodstock-owned six-year-old has returned to Ireland to prepare for the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) at Sha Tin on December 14, where his regular rider Dylan Browne-McMonagle is expected to be back onboard. "He arrived back in Ireland in the last 24 hours so Joseph will have a good look at him with a view to returning to Hong Kong for the Vase in a month," Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett told Racing.com of the Joseph O'Brien-trained entire. "In many ways it's just easier to get him back to Ireland in familiar surroundings to prepare as it's [Hong Kong Vase] still a month away. We were disappointed with where he finished but not with the performance in the Cup. Under the circumstances, he drew out and they hacked around the back and I knew there was no chance he could win at that stage and I thought he might not even run into it.”

Nine for Dabirism

Next Mine (3 c ex Next Holy by Holy Roman Emperor) became the ninth individual stakes winner for Dabirism (Hat Trick) when landing Sunday’s Premio Vittorio di Capua (Gr 2, 1600m) at Milan. Ridden by Thore Hammer Hansen for trainer Waldemar Hickst, the three-year-old colt ran out a four lengths victor over Arnis Master (Tai Chi) with a further three and a quarter lengths back to the third-placed Kabir (Far Above). Bred by Gestut Wittekindshof, Next Mine races in the silks of Eckhard Sauren and is out of the Listed-placed winner Next Holy (Holy Roman Emperor), making him a brother to the stakes-placed winner Packing Warrior.

Hail storm

Romanoff (right) (Credit: Race Images)

Lloyd Jackson

ANZ News

Volatile spring weather which included a sharp hail storm severely affected the final day of Riccarton’s annual Cups-Guineas carnival. People were scurrying for cover, slipping, sliding and falling due to the ice. This was unique for practically everyone in attendance.

Remarkably, the show carried on. Centimetres deep hail fell between races four and five. Officials met, jockeys inspected the track and agreed to continue. The track rating was downgraded slightly but the heavy 9 surface threw much of the form out the window affecting the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) which was run about four or five seconds slower than might normally be expected.

In a mild upset Romanoff (Belardo) defeated his stablemate Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) by the narrowest of margins, the judge needing several minutes to reach his decision. Trainer of the pair, Pam Gerard, was not bothered who won. It was her second 2000 Guineas win having trained Savaglee (Savabeel) to a much easier victory in 2024.

Given the perfect ride by Bruno Queiroz, sitting a handy fourth two lanes out to the top of the straight, Romanoff took over the lead before the 300 metres but was challenged by Affirmative Action soon after. These two settled down for a great duel over the final 200 metres and at the line commentator Matt Cross called Affirmative Action the winner but was deceived by the head bob which saw Romanoff prevail. There really was nothing between them.

Romanoff has been handled patiently, the Guineas just his seventh start. At two he broke his maiden on his second start and was tried at Group 2 level in Ellerslie’s Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) where he beat one home. His stake earnings, however, gained him a start in the NZB Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) where he again beat one home.

This season he resumed with a third at Rotorua in mid-October and followed that with another third, finishing strongly in the delayed November 1st James & Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m) at Tauranga, beaten a length and a half.

A win at Tauranga would have been highly appropriate because Romanoff was bred by Marie Leicester, James’ and Annie’s daughter. The 2000 Guineas is, no doubt, a more than worthwhile trade.

The progeny of Belardo (Lope De Vega) improve when the tracks are wet yet Romanoff has performed well when conditions are firmer. It will be interesting to look back at his season to see if he can maintain form on top of the ground.

Romanoff represents the second last of six crops sired by Belardo who shuttled to Haunui Farm. When just 13 mares visited the stallion in 2022, his last visit, the writing was on the wall. As is often the case, his stock have ignored the breeders’ shun and he is siring winners by the bucket load including ex-NZ performed Skippers Canyon, a Benchmark 74 winner at Caulfield on Saturday. Romanoff marks Belardo’s 18th individual stakes winner and third to succeed at Group 1 level.

The $402,500 winner’s stakes shot Belardo from fourth to the top of the New Zealand sire premiership ahead of Proisir (Choisir), El Roca (Fastnet Rock) and Time Test (Dubawi). Time Test (Dubawi), sire of Saturday's How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Proven, and both he and Belardo have been sold and stand in Turkey.

Beaus and belles

The Sartens have bred from this line since 1939 when James and Annie borrowed a mare from a neighbour to send to Foxbridge (Foxlaw). The result was Belle Fox, the foundation for a wonderful history. The “Belle” family has been nothing short of magnificent throughout the following decades and consistently produces top performers.

Arion Pedigrees reveals that in nine generations Bell Fox is responsible for more than 2000 individual winners, 125 of which are stakes winners. Romanoff is one of 27 individual Group 1 winners which includes his close relative, champion mare Melody Belle (Commands) whose dam Meleka Belle (Iffraaj) is a half-sister to Romanoff’s dam Tsarina Belle (Stravinsky).

Race Record: 7 Starts 2-0-2 NZ$454,075.

2 wins-1 at 2-at 1100m, 1600m, NZ$454,075, to 2025-26, New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, Gr.1, Levin RC UZA Bus 2YO S., 3d BOP RC James & Annie Sarten Memorial S., Gr.2.

Even more recent is nine-times Group 1 champion Anamoe (Street Boss) who descends from Bell Fox’s daughter Belle Time (Summertime), the three-quarter sister to champion filly Star Belle (Summertime). Why mention Star Belle? On day one of the Riccarton carnival Just Charlie (Zed) took out the Metropolitan Handicap (Listed, 2600m). He is a direct descendant of Star Belle, his fourth dam.

Romanoff was found for $75,000 in Book 2 at the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sales by Paul Moroney in conjunction with Catheryn Bruggerman. His dam Tsarina Belle has foaled five winners, earlier producing Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m) winner La Flora Belle (Iffraaj). Tsarina Belle had sufficient quality to place third in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and is one of four stakes performers and 11 winners from Empress Belle (Sir Tristram).

Just keep winning

A different drama struck at Tauranga when a burst water main flooded the start area of the 1600m chute as the club was preparing to run the Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). After a delay the race was run over a slightly shorter 1530 metres and the result may have differed but Agera (Complacent) continues to make his name as an up-and-comer.

Agera never left the fence throughout, improved to third rounding into the straight then drove along the inner from the 300 metres. With 150 metres remaining the race looked in safe keeping except that Meaningful Star (Pivotal) came at him with a strong run but the post arrived in time. We will never know if the extra 70 metres might have been a factor.

Agera (Credit: Race Images)

Now a six-year-old, Agera is in the best form of his life, the Group 2 his eighth career win but more importantly his sixth in his last eight starts. Two starts back he nabbed the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) and in between knocked over the Feilding Cup (2050m) so to win again over 500 metres less is a notable training effort.

His sire Complacent (Authorized) no longer stands at Mapperley Stud and instead is now based in France. Agera is one of four stakes winners for the sire. Like Belardo (Lope De Vega), he stood six seasons here but breeders lost interest. Meanwhile, his daughter Hi Yo Sass Bomb has recently struck gold with back-to-back Group 3 victories.

Agera is one of six winners including two stakes winners from his dam Shelly Bee (Pentire), the other being Listed winner Ima Roca Bee (El Roca). Shelly Bee’s half-brother is Herculian Prince (Yaminan Vital) the winner of nine races including Sydney’s Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m). Their dam is a half-sister to Group 3 and Listed winner Sleeping Beauty (Rip Van Winkle).

Available

Happily, the sires of the remaining Kiwi-bred stakes winners on Saturday are still available. Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact), Ace High (High Chaparral) and Ghibellines (Shamardal) are still in New Zealand.

Bozo (Credit: Race Images)

Bozo (Satono Aladdin) broke through at start 30 to land the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) in a slog. When the rain arrived her starting price continued to fall. Her record on rain affected ground is pretty good as five of her previous six wins were logged on heavy tracks.

The Stewards’ Stakes (Listed, 1200m) fell to Wingatui six-year-old Inflamed (Ghibellines) who relished the track conditions taking out her maiden stakes win. Last at the junction as well as at the top of the straight, she was pulled widest and kept up a strong run down the outer to claim her sixth win. She will be a welcome addition to the White Robe Lodge broodmare ranks.

Drakaina (Ace High) added her first stakes win since her export to Australia in April 2024, Ascot’s Jungle Mist Classic (Listed, 1200m). She had two wins including the NZB Air Freight Stakes (Listed, 1400m) by more than six lengths here and the Jungle Mist was her fifth win in 12 starts. Her strong straight run was the feature of the race as she had plenty of ground to make up from the 250 metres.

Proved

Six wins in seven starts is the burgeoning record of Proved (Time Test) who had to dive along the inner late in the piece for a convincing win, her first stakes in the How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The mare never saw the racetrack at two or three and won on debut a year ago at Moe followed by a Class 1 win at Moonee Valley. Benchmark wins at Sale and Pakenham preceded win five at Sandown in March to remain unbeaten. She arrived at Caulfield after a fresh up fifth at Benchmark 78 level.

Proved (Credit: Bruno Cannatelli)

As mentioned above, her sire Time Test (Dubawi) has been banished to Turkey and like Belardo (Lope De Vega) is siring plenty of winners since his departure but the winners were too late to save their New Zealand careers.

An $11,000 outlay secured the filly at the Windsor Park Rugby, Racing and Beer sale. She has earned $244,575 and is the only foal her dam, Out To Impress (Shamexpress), herself a half-sister to Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Monaco Consul (High Chaparral). Another half-sister is Group 3-placed So Divine (High Chaparral), granddam of last month’s War Decree Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) so the family is cooking.

Karaka wrap

On the back of a record-breaking Ready To Run Sale, New Zealand Bloodstock now turns their attention to January and the 100th New Zealand National Yearling Sale. The company will be buoyed by these results, grossing $41.4 million over the two days, providing a head of steam for the yearling sale.

More than 70 of the 114 sires represented last week stand in Australia and four of the top five by average are/were Australian-based. By aggregate, Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (Street Cry) headed the list with $2.03 million, aided by two lots which fetched $750,000 and $700,000.

Per Incanto jumped to third in the Australian Sire premiership when Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) took out the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), his third Group 1, in brilliant fashion, earning $602,500 and taking his career earnings to $6.68 million. Evaporate (Per Incanto) chipped in with $90,000 in the same race when finishing third.

From a New Zealand perspective it was pleasing to see young sires such as Armory (Galileo), Hello Youmzain (Kodiac), Noverre (Savabeel), Super Seth (Dundeel) and Sword Of State (Snitzel) make an impact.
