After a “pinch me I’m dreaming” spring carnival for the progeny of Per Incanto (Street Cry), culminating in more elite-level glory for Jimmysstar in the C.F. Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), Little Avondale Stud’s proprietor Sam Williams is excited to showcase their resident stallion’s freshest crop of yearlings at the start of the new year when New Zealand Bloodstock celebrates its centenary sale at Karaka.

The famed farm, which has been operated by the Williams family for the past eight decades, will present a dozen Per Incanto youngsters as part of their NZB National Yearling Sale draft across three days of feverish trading at Karaka and, given the seismic success the sire has enjoyed on both sides of the Tasman this past year, there seems little doubt they will be hot property.

With honourable mentions for his recent Big Dance (1600m) winner Gringotts and fellow Little Avondale graduate Evaporate, who embellished his CV with victory in the Sandown Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) and a pair of Group 1 placings this campaign, Per Incanto’s shining star of the spring has undoubtedly been ‘Jimmy’.

What's On

The versatile chestnut has overcome both a somewhat troubled start to life and an early-career tendency to dawdle out of the gates to emerge as arguably the country’s pre-eminent sprinter.

Having chased home Briasa (Smart Missile) in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before registering another minor placing in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) behind Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), the Hong Kong superstar whose dam Missy Moo is by Per Incanto, Jimmysstar further elevated his profile and augmented his connections’ bank balances with back-to-back wins in the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) and C.F. Orr Stakes.

Those twin triumphs saw Jimmysstar move past $6.6 million in career earnings and catapulted Per Incanto, who commands a service fee of $60,000 (plus GST), into the top three of the Australian Sires Premiership behind Arrowfield’s The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Chopice) and Coolmore’s late stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill).

“It’s been a real pinch yourself spring for all of us, we’ve really looked forward to the races every week,” Williams told ANZ News.

“It’s been incredible to sit down every Saturday and watch horses that we have bred and part-own be competitive in some of Australia’s biggest races.

“New Zealand has traditionally been seen as the place to breed milers and stayers, but Ka Ying Rising confirmed he is the world’s best sprinter with his win in The Everest and Jimmysstar has put his hand up as arguably the best sprinter in Australia, so I think those two have probably changed a few people’s opinions of the industry over here.

“It’s taken Jimmy a while to really learn his craft, but he’s the complete racehorse now. When he lets down he just seems to float across the ground, and he reminds me of Dundeel in that respect. I do think he’ll end up a miler in time because of the way he glides and because he’s now really learned to settle in his races, but given his deadly turn of foot and how much prizemoney is available for sprinters, it probably makes sense to stick to the shorter trips for now.

“It’s just been amazing to see him develop and I have to give huge credit to Ciaron [Maher] and his team, because they’ve done a terrific job with the horse. They had to be quite patient in the beginning but they’re definitely getting the rewards now. It’s been one heck of a ride so far and from what Ciaron’s been saying I do think his best may still be ahead of him, so it’s not over yet.”

Due to his hectic workload on the family farm, where Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Little Brose (Per Incanto) is learning his craft under the watchful eye of his famous father, Williams was only able to attend The Everest in person during the spring.

However he and wife Catriona, a decorated showjumper who is a willing traveller despite suffering a serious spinal cord injury following a fall while competing in 2002, are determined to be a much more visible presence for Jimmystar’s autumn campaign.

In a mirror image of this year’s autumn campaign, Jimmysstar is likely to kick off in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at its new (temporary) home of Caulfield. From there, his travel itinerary is again set to feature the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), before recuperating at Maher’s Bong Bong property ahead of a spring assault geared towards a tantalising rematch with Ka Ying Rising in the world’s richest race on turf.

By Williams’ own candid admission, during his formative years Jimmysstar seemed highly unlikely to scale such lofty heights given he was deemed unsuitable to take to the sales.

“He was a lovely muscular foal, but when it came to yearling preparation time he hadn’t grown as much as we would have liked and then his x-rays also revealed two stifle cysts,” Williams explained.

“So he was a bit behind where he needed to be, and we decided to give him time rather than rushing to get him ready for the yearling sales. When we x-rayed him again the following year the cysts were still showing, and although they’re not usually a major issue it meant he probably wasn’t going to be suitable for the trade market, so at that point we had no option but to race him ourselves.”

Williams subsequently opted to send the horse to trainer Guy Lowry, a former school friend he had known since the age of eight.

Despite suffering defeat after missing the start on debut, the manner of his closing sectionals suggested Jimmy might have a future in the game and he subsequently franked that opinion with back-to-back wins which attracted significant interest from overseas.

Per Incanto is very highly regarded in Hong Kong so predictably Williams fielded calls from a plethora of interested buyers based in the Asian racing mecca, but he was acutely aware that the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s strict reliance on x-ray results would have stopped any potential sale in its tracks.

However, when approached by a consortium led by prominent owners Ozzie Kheir and John O’Neill, Williams readily agreed to the sale on the condition that he and Catriona each retained a five per cent share.

The move has proved to be a masterstroke as Jimmy hit the ground in his adopted homeland, winning nine times for Maher - including four in stakes company - and alerting his high-profile ownership group to the huge potential and adaptability of Per Incanto’s progeny.

Several of the same owners have enjoyed enormous success with Gringotts, who would also surpassed the $6 million mark with a successful defence of his title in The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange this coming Saturday; and they would also have been encouraged with the debut jumpout of Jimmy’s baby brother and stablemate In’kantosstar at Cranbourne on Monday morning.

Indeed, Kheir and O’Neill were keen on a pair of Per Incanto colts at the recent NZB Ready To Run Sale, but were ultimately outbid by Chinese investors with Lots 214 from the Kiltannon Stables draft and 398 from the Trelawney Stud consignment fetching $750,000 and $700,000 respectively.

However, the well-heeled duo will undoubtedly be active from 25-27 January at the 100th Karaka sale, which will feature up to 30 yearlings by Per Incanto. Of the 27 youngsters set to grace the ring from Little Avondale’s draft, Williams has earmarked some standout fillies which he feels will be highly sought after.

“It’s an amazing catalogue and we’ve got some lovely yearlings to take to Karaka, so we’re already getting pretty excited,” Williams told ANZ News.

“I think our In The Congo filly [Lot 270] is really going to turn heads, all three auction houses wanted her but in the end we decided to stay loyal to the Karaka sale.

“We also have a Per Incanto filly [Lot 333] out of an Exceed and Excel mare from Chautauqua’s family, it’s only Candy Bar’s second foal and she is a ripping filly. I also really like the Per Incanto filly [Lot 256] out of Alam Mo Na, she’s the half-brother to Namaste who won for Bjorn Baker at Canterbury last Friday. He looks like he’ll win more races and his sister is a really lovely filly, so we have high hopes for her.”

Per Incanto will have covered 92 mares when this breeding season draws to a close but, with the farm keen to focus on quality rather than quantity and in order to ensure the longevity of their prized possession, his book of mares will be scaled right back next year.

At 22, Per Incanto is entering the twilight years of his stallion career and once his days of active duties are over, he will live out his days on the farm where, as Williams explains, the elder statesman commands huge admiration and affection.

“He has the most unbelievable personality,” Williams said.

“Every evening when I walk past his barn on the way to the house, he calls out for a carrot and now Little Brose is starting to do the same thing. They are both such laidback characters, it’s amazing how similar they are.

“When we got back to the farm the day after the Everest, just before we had dinner Catriona and I decided to have a quick drink with Per Incanto to toast Jimmy. I pushed Catriona into his box, and she gave me a bit of a worried look.

“It’s fair enough because the horse weighs 650 kilos and she’s sitting there in her wheelchair, so it was probably pretty daunting. But he walked straight up to her, put his head in her lap and wanted her to give him a big pat. It was a pretty special moment, and it summed up what a special horse he is to us.”

Stretan Angel set for Meteorite

Stretan Angel (Credit: Racing Photos)

Phillip Stokes acknowledges the challenges of managing Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) but believes the five-year-old mare can deliver in Saturday’s $1 million The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne. A three-time Group 1 placegetter, Stretan Angel ended a 700-day win drought two starts ago in the Alinghi Stakes (Listed, 1100m) before a disappointing run in the Kirin Ichiban Sprint (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup carnival. "She's been like that for the last two years," Stokes said. "We gave her some fast work Saturday morning and everything says she's going as good as ever. She's run some slashing races at the elite-level, but I feel she's still there. If she can get the race run to suit, she will run a good race." Stokes had originally considered running her in Saturday’s How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), but was swayed by the lure of the $1 million slot race staged by Southside Racing on Cranbourne Cup day. "When they rang us up and gave us the offer, we thought, why not?" Stokes said. "It's worth a lot of money. She's got a lot of black type already, so we'll chase the money." With the Cranbourne 1200-metre chute start resembling Caulfield, Stokes said the mare will need the right setup. "Good speed. Good speed and clear room, that's what she needs."

Jenni The Fox gives Yeomans a shot at Meteorite

Lucy Yeomans will saddle Jenni The Fox (Too Darn Hot) in Saturday’s $1 million The Meteorite at Cranbourne. Yeomans has sent out only four runners since going out on her own in September, and she said she was still coming to terms with having a contender in such a lucrative race. “It is a really great opportunity that I am not taking lightly,” Yeomans told The Verdict podcast on Tuesday. “Jenni The Fox is a lovely, progressive mare. “[Owner] Tony Ottobre and myself are very aware that they’re a bit more seasoned and probably a bit sharper than her, at this stage of her career, but she is progressive and we think she’ll give it a red-hot shake.” The mare heads to The Meteorite off a flashing third in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day – a performance Yeomans barely witnessed after her partner, jockey Blake Shinn, fell in the same race and suffered a broken leg. “It was awful,” Yeomans said. “I’m actually quite glad I had a runner in the race because normally, when I watch the races when Blake is riding, I just watch Blake and don’t watch anything else. But I was watching my horse when I saw a little flash of red hit the ground and, in the moment – with the stress of it all – I wasn’t sure if it was Blake. I stopped watching Jenni The Fox, who ran a blinder and ran third, and sprinted out of the trainer’s room, out onto the track. Luckily, Jett Stanley scooped me up and took me out to where Blake was and then it was all systems go to try and get him comfortable.”

Keys chasing hometown cup with Scheelite

Ken and Kasey Keys are aiming to add another Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m) to their trophy cabinet on Saturday, this time relying on Scheelite (Real Steel). Keys, who has won the Cranbourne Cup twice previously with Blue Collar Jack (Perugino) (2006) and Boom ’N’ Zoom ( Dash For Cash) (2011), faces the challenge of Scheelite currently sitting 24th in the order of entry for the $500,000 feature, which has a safety limit of 16 runners plus four emergencies. "If he doesn't get in, we'll go to Kilmore on Sunday," Keys said, noting the $200,000 Kilmore Cup (Listed, 1600m) as a back-up option. Scheelite has been carefully managed this campaign, with his return to training delayed to target the Cranbourne Cup. "It would be the ultimate really," he said. "It would be pretty special to win a third. It's a little ambitious and this has been the home track for ever. But it's getting tough to get into this race now and if he doesn't get in, we'll go to Kilmore on Sunday." This spring, Scheelite finished sixth first-up at Caulfield before running second in the Peninsula Cup (1600m) at Mornington on November 2. "I'm really happy with how he is going," Keys said. "The other day at Mornington, it's probably one that got away. He got to the front, and then he probably took a bit of a break. We're hoping he gets in [on Saturday] and can give it a shake."

Expensive Exceedance colt among trial winners

Wild Atlantic pictured as a yearling (Credit: Magic Millions)

There were three juvenile heats over 900 metres were conducted at Rosehill on Tuesday and Wild Atlantic, a high-priced colt by Exceedance (Exceed And Excel), was among the winners.

Trained by Team Hawkes, the colt produced a smooth trial to beat Portico (Exceed And Excel), the first foal out of Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Arcaded (Street Boss), by 3.3 lengths. Coolazcanbe (Cool Aza Beel) finished a further 1.5 lengths behind in third.

Wild Atlantic was a $320,000 Magic Millions purchase for Hawkes Racing from the Vinery draft, where the stallion resides, and he is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Aspect (Pluck) and stakes-winner Brown Ben (Big Brown).

The next trial was taken out by the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained Tigroni (Tiger Of Malay), a filly who was bought by her trainers, James Bester Bloodstock and Ladies Syndicate from the Newgate Farm consignment for $85,000.

The filly finished strongly to beat Firm ‘n’ high (Bivouac) by 3.9 lengths with another 0.5 lengths back to Marwooba (Wootton Bassett).

Team Hawkes enjoyed another juvenile trial winner when Dr Hook (Too Darn Hot) landed the final juvenile heat of the day.

The son of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) jumped smartly to beat Letters Patent (Wootton Bassett) by 0.2 lengths with a further 1.3 lengths back to Bangkok Hottie (Too Darn Hot).

The colt was retained by his breeders Rob and Pam Crosby, who also bred and raced his dam Sylvia’s Mother (Snitzel), a multiple Group winner that was also prepared by Team Hawkes.

A Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) half-sister to Dr Hook will be offered at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale next year.

Impressive Scone winner for Playing God

Playing God (Blackfriars), Western Australia’s champion stallion, sired an impressive winner on Tuesday when the Brad Widdup-trained Azure Angel took out a competitive looking 1200-metre contest at Scone. Raced by Mulberry Racing, the filly defeated Borderfall (Territories) by 1.3 lengths with Avista (Maurice) finishing third. The three-year-old filly was the most expensive of Widdup’s four yearlings by the Darling View Thoroughbreds-based stallion he bought at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in 2024, paying Forest View Farm $210,000 for the youngster. The filly is out of five-time winner Angel Sky (Hurricane Sky), making her a half-sister to stakes-placed winner Angels Impact (I’m All The Talk). Playing God is standing for a fee of $49,500 (inc GST).

Elonia issue sale-bound sibling a timely update

The Annabel and Ron Archibald-trained Elonia (Written Tycoon) got off the mark at the second time of asking when she took out a 1115-metre event at Kyneton on Tuesday. The filly came into the race off the back of her unplaced debut at Bendigo, but she looked to have built on that performance, beating Miss Navratilova (Pariah) by a comprehensive 5.3 lengths. Immortal Justice (I Am Immortal) finished a further 0.7 lengths further adrift in third. Out of the dual-winning Close To Me (I Am Invincible), Elonia’s second dam is the Listed scorer Rose Of Choice (Choisir). Elonia was purchased by her trainers for $260,000 from the Yulong Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the operation will offer an Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) half-sister to the filly at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale next year. She is catalogued as Lot 177.

Barber set for second campaign in The Warra

Richard Litt is aiming to continue his strong record with Barber (Exceed And Excel) when the five-year-old resumes in Saturday’s $300,000 The Warra (1000m) at Kembla Grange. A $215,000 Inglis Digital purchase for Monarch Racing last year, Barber won the Takeover Target Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at his second start for Litt and later finished third in the Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m). "He's a wonderful horse, he did his job in his first preparation with us, paying his owners back immensely, so if we can knock off one or two more races he's really done his job," Litt said. "We've had this race in our sights for a very long time. We purposely tipped them out at the right time, he had a good spell, he's come back and he's come back very, very good." Barber, who won a $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) and Blue Diamond Preview (Gr 3, 1100m) for James Cummings and Godolphin, has had two Warwick Farm trials, finishing sixth in each, but Litt deliberately kept him fresh. "We've mindfully kept him very, very fresh," he said. "He's a horse that can be a little bit lazy and very unassuming in his work, but we also needed to do enough with him to make sure that he's ready for game day. I was very happy with his trials, he's come through them very well and he's ready to rock and roll.”

Vale John Jeffs

John Jeffs, respected industry figure and bloodstock agent, died on Tuesday. He was 83. He began his career in racing as secretary of the Cowra Jockey Club, before moving to Sydney to work as the track manager at Rosehill. After a five-year stint in Hong Kong as clerk of the course, he returned home to Australia to work as a bloodstock agent and sales advisor to many across the racing industry. “JJ was a valued member of our organisation for almost 20 years, serving as Racecourse Manager across both the Sydney Turf Club and the Australian Jockey Club at Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick. His contribution to our venues and to Sydney racing leaves a lasting legacy,” wrote the Australian Turf Club on social media.

Gerard weighs summer options for Guineas quinella

Pam Gerard is in no rush to lock in summer targets for Romanoff (Belardo) and Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) after the pair finished first and second respectively in Saturday’s New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) and the $4 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) loom as natural options, but Gerard said both horses will enjoy a short break before decisions are made. Romanoff, who prevailed narrowly over his stablemate, has first option on the Canterbury Jockey Club’s NZB Kiwi slot. Gerard also expects strong interest for Affirmative Action, whose unbeaten Ellerslie form has already made him an attractive proposition. “There’s no denying Affirmative Action’s liking for Ellerslie, so that will make him an obvious target for NZB Kiwi slot-holders,” she said. “The race is obviously very tempting for Romanoff too, as there’s a million-dollar bonus up for grabs if he can add that race to Saturday’s win, plus I understand he’s up for an additional bonus as a graduate of Karaka Book 2.” Looking further ahead for her Guineas pair, Gerard said the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) is among the possible early-year options. “A race like the BCD Sprint looks like a good early option for both Guineas horses, but it’s too early to lock that or any other race in,” she said. “First things first, we’ll give them a wee break, see how they progress and take it from there.”

Queen Of Kings primed for Phar Lap assignment

Queen Of Kings (Prince Of Brooklyn) gets a prime opportunity to further her record at Phar Lap Raceway on Wednesday when she lines up as a key contender in the Jon Snow & Echoes Of Heaven Handicap (1600m). The five-year-old mare has been consistent throughout her preparation, breaking through at Oamaru in winter before adding an open handicap win at Ashburton two starts ago. She has also collected three minor placings and proven effective across a variety of track conditions. “She’s been doing things right and it’s a small field so she should get every chance,” said trainer Len Stewart, who now trains in partnership with granddaughter Lacy. “She’s taken quite a while to develop into a solid horse and finish off properly.” Gosen Jogoo, aboard for both of the mare’s victories, retains the ride. “She’s in good form and Gosen rides her very well, she’s quite a dependable mare,” Stewart said. “She hasn’t had a lot of luck and Kate [Hercock] is on her and she’s riding very well,” Stewart said.

Meaningful Star on track for Challenge Stakes defence

Meaningful Star (Credit: Race Images)

Meaningful Star (Pivotal) may get the chance to defend his title in next week’s Challenge Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) after a fast-finishing second in Saturday’s Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1530m). The seasoned nine-year-old charged late and missed by only a short head behind Agera (Complacent), a performance that delighted co-trainer and part-owner Grant Cooksley. “It was a good run. A couple of more strides and he would have been in front,” said Cooksley, who trains in partnership with Bruce Wallace. “He just doesn’t really like racing between horses, he needs a bit of room.” Cooksley reported the gelding has bounced through the effort well and is under strong consideration for Ellerslie on Saturday week. “He has come through it well,” he said. “We might go to Ellerslie next week, we will just wait and see.” Meanwhile, Meaningful Star’s stablemate Sacred Satono will then chase a long-awaited Group 1 win over the summer following placings in both the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m). Moving Melody will represent the stable in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), the mare coming off a Listed placing earlier this month.“She has come through her race well and the 1400 metres will probably suit her,” Cooksley said. “She hasn’t gone backwards, so she will be right there.”

HK: Tomodachi Kokoroe aims to extend rise in Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint

David Hayes heads into Sunday’s Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 3, 1200m) at Sha Tin with perhaps the two leading chances: Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2024/25) and five-time Group 1 winner, Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), plus seasoned veteran, Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon), who has embarked on a stunning rise from Class 2 to Group 2 with three wins from three starts this season. “We’ll see him against the champ. I knew I’d have the leading sprinter, but Tomodachi Kokoroe, well it’s incredible,” Hayes said. “It took him eight starts to win in Class 4, and as a seven-year-old now, he’s arguably inside the top three sprinters in Hong Kong. He’s a revelation – a fantastic horse.” Tomodachi Kokoroe won nicely first-up in Class 2, but what followed was remarkable. He followed his return success with another win, earning a shot at Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m), a race he blitzed in 1m 07.39s – the second-fastest 1200 metres time in Hong Kong racing history behind Ka Ying Rising (1m 07.20s) – to crown his extraordinary turnaround. “He’s always shown he’s a good horse, but he’s a horse like so many, who just took that time at the start to adjust to Hong Kong. We’re training him the same, but the one thing that has made a massive difference is the one-eyed blinker,” Hayes said.

International

314 for Dubawi

Darley’s marquee stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) scored his 314th individual stakes winner courtesy of Al Zanati’s (2 c ex Divine Image by Scat Daddy) victory in Tuesday’s Prox Thomas Bryon (Gr 3, 1800m) at Chantilly. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the Godolphin homebred defeated fellow British raider Bourbon Blues (Space Blues) by a head with another two and a half lengths back to Pacifica Pier (Palace Pier) in third. Al Zanati is out of Divine Image, a Group 3-winning daughter of Scat Daddy, who is also the dam of Circle Of Dreams (Dubawi). Dubawi will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$709,670).

IRE: Starman colt leads the way at solid Goffs November Foal Sale opener

Members of Starman’s (Dutch Art) third crop were front and centre on day one of the Goffs November Foal Sale on Monday, with the Tally-Ho Stud stallion supplying both of the session’s six-figure lots. It is little wonder that his offspring are in high demand, with the July Cup winner leading the first-season sire standings by almost every metric. He has supplied 35 European winners, five stakes scorers and no less than 11 black-type performers. His notable runners are headed by the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) heroine Venetian Sun. Brendan Holland of Grove Stud signalled his membership of the Starman fan club by signing for two of the day’s top five, including the Starman colt out of Express. The Oghill House Stud-consigned youngster drew a session-topping bid of €125,000 (approx. AU$223,260) “He’s a nicely balanced colt, a good mover but still immature,” said Holland. “He seems to have a good outlook, is correct, and will come back for sale as a yearling. It’s the family of Havana Gold; he’s out of the colt's third dam, the speedy Jessica's Dream, and I’ve been lucky with this family in the past.” Meanwhile, a colt by Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), sire of this year’s VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Observer, proved popular when selling to Piercetown Stud for €92,000 (approx. AU$164,320).
