King Of Light tipped to shine bright in the WA Guineas

Having previously been compared to a “surfer dude”, it is entirely fitting that King Of Light (Earthlight) is currently riding the crest of a wave as the unbeaten three-year-old heads into this Saturday’s WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) as the raging $1.75 favourite.
The only Earthlight (Sharmadal) in trainer Dan Morton’s Ascot stable, King Of Light has dazzled with a pair of luminous home track performances this campaign, in the process becoming his sire’s second stakes winner in Australia after Ash and Amy Yargi’s filly Petit Artiste.

What's On

Having launched from near last to collar his rivals in the Belgravia Stakes (Listed, 1200m), King Of Light subsequently ran down down smart colt Heeza Phoenix (Grunt) from an improbable position in the Fairetha Stakes (Listed, 1400m) a fortnight ago - covering the final 600 metres in a slick time of 34.47 on both occasions.

Given his unblemished record from four starts and the dynamic manner of those dual triumphs, bookmakers aren’t prepared to take any chances on the handsome chestnut who will resume his fruitful association with Willie Pike, the riding wizard chasing a sixth WA Guineas success.

It was Pike who first drew the comparison between a surfer and laidback customer with King Of Light, a $120,000 purchase by Morton from the Amelia Park draft at last year’s Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

As a physical specimen Lot 141 was, according to his buyer, a thing of beauty and his progress since arriving at Morton’s yard has been nothing short of prodigious.

While reluctant to heap more pressure on his young charge by labelling him the best three-year-old he has ever put a saddle on, Morton concedes King Of Light is “right up there” and a fifth successive victory on Saturday would surely set him up for a potentially lucrative raid on Melbourne’s autumn carnival next year.

“I’m a bit surprised he’s come up so short in the market but he clearly deserves to be favourite,” Morton, whose only previous victory in the WA Guineas came when Man Booker (Discorsi) was on the right side of a photo-finish ten years ago, told ANZ News.

“It’s still early days in his career but he’s done everything right so far. It will be a big challenge for him on Saturday, but he’s tracking really well so I’m very happy with him. He’s never run over the mile before but given the way he finished off the race over 1400 metres last time, I would expect the extra distance to suit him.

“Having said that, I also expect the mile to suit quite a lot of horses in the race, there’s good depth in the three-year-old ranks in WA this year so I don’t think it’s a case of turning up and winning. It seems like most trainers have at least one good three-year-old in their yard, so he’ll be up against a very competitive field but his wins this prep have obviously given us a lot of confidence heading into the race.

“He’s got a great turn of foot but his casual demeanour is probably just as important. He’s got all the attributes you need to be a very good horse, we’re still feeling our way with him so we’re not sure where the ceiling is just yet but I’m pretty excited to find out.”

Morton also saddles up outsider My Authoritah (Playing God), the only runner in the race sired by Western Australia’s leading stallion, and Buthelezi (Smart Missile), who is chasing a picket fence having also compiled back-to-back victories - albeit in a much lower grade than his more celebrated stablemate.

The gelded son of Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) currently occupies the third line of betting, with Rock Fest (Awesome Rock) - who finished third in the Fairetha - sandwiched between Morton’s pair of stable companions.

Unlike King Of Light, who drew perfectly in barrier four, Buthelezi will start from out wide but Morton is hopeful it won’t prove too big a hindrance as the three-year-old bids to become the 28th stakes winner for his evergreen sire, who stands at the Tait family’s Twin Hills Stud for the relatively modest fee of $13,200 (inc GST).

“He’s a beautiful strong type and he goes there in great form, so I give him a good chance,” Morton said.

“His work on Tuesday morning was particularly good and Brad [Parnham] is pretty bullish about his chances, so that’s good enough for me. Unlike King Of Light he’s really stepping up in grade from the races he’s been competing in, but he couldn’t have been any more impressive this time in so we thought he deserved the chance to take his place.

“The field often gets strung out in the Guineas, so hopefully he can get in at some point from the wide gate but even if he’s two or three deep with cover, it wouldn’t be a huge problem because he’s a rangy horse with a big stride on him. If he’s close enough coming to the home turn, hopefully he can slingshot out of it and run over the top of them.”

It could be a big day for Morton and also his wife Carol, who holds small shares in King Of Light and the stable’s leading Railways Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) contender Super Smink (Super One).

Having registered her sixth stakes win as the race favourite in the Lee Steere Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last time, Super Smink has her tail up but connections’ confidence levels were perhaps lowered when she was assigned barrier 15 - ironically the same gate she jumped from in the Railway 12 months ago when third.

That prompted most bookmakers to push her out to $10 but if regular rider Chris Parnham can take up a handy enough position in the run, those odds might be made to look generous in the extreme given her remarkable race record.

With nine black type placings in addition to the six wins to her name, the mare is Mrs Consistent and Morton is confident she can again figure in the finish, having launched from the rear of the field to get within 0.75 lengths of last year’s Railway Stakes winner Port Lockroy (Better Than Ready).

“Her last win was terrific and she also ran really well first-up, so she’s certainly trending in the right direction,” Morton said.

“It’s obviously not an ideal draw but she should come in a couple after scratchings, so as long as there’s a solid tempo on and she gets a bit of luck in running, I think she’s definitely a live chance in the race.

“We’ve got her nominated for the Winterbottom, the Northerly and the Gold Rush, so we’ll sit down and map out a plan after Saturday but we’ve got plenty of options with her because she’s so versatile. She’s just a good honest mare who puts in every time she goes to the races, which is all you can ask for.”

Super Smink was chased home in the Lee Steere by stablemate In Good Order (American Pharoah), who will be hoping to turn the tables when he re-opposes in the Railway Stakes.

That rousing return - albeit at the eye-popping odds of $101 - would suggest the five-year-old is in for another prosperous preparation, a sentiment his trainer clearly shares.

“He started at big odds last time but it was no surprise to anyone in the stable that he ran so well behind Super Smink,” said Morton.

“When Shaun O’Donnell jumped off him this morning he said he’s probably the happiest horse in the whole of Perth, so as his name suggests he is in good order and I think he’s capable of making his presence felt on Saturday.”

Almost An Angel impresses on debut

Almost An Agel (Credit: Racing Photos)

Robbie Griffiths’ juvenile filly Almost An Angel (So You Think) made a perfect start to her career when she won impressively over 1000 metres on debut at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday. Ridden by Luke Nolen following two impressive trials, the daughter of late Coolmore sire So You Think (High Chaparral) settled at the back of the small field of six. She was still a good three lengths behind the leader Angelic Rise (Harry Angel) with 200 metres to go before unleashing a powerful late sprint to win by two lengths over Iconic Ruler (Wild Ruler). "It's no surprise at all because we've been trying to put her in the paddock all along. She's a So You Think filly and you reckon they need time. I'm thinking to myself, 'Why are we running her'? She's just kept saying, 'Let me run'," Griffiths told Racing.com. "She trialled well at Cranbourne against Luna Vega, who subsequently ran third in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate, then she trialled well again at Cranbourne. We thought we'd send her to the paddock then but she was bucking and squealing and feeling great. I told Luke [Nolen] to leave her be, as she has that So You Think blood to be strong at the end. If she wasn't by So You Think, you would have been really bullish, thinking, 'This is a ready-made two-year-old'." Assuming she comes through the run in good order, Griffiths is planning a quick jump to black-type company, likely in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on November 29. "She's got a beautiful pedigree and if she can repeat the dose in ten days' time and get black type, she's very valuable," he said. "She's had a look at Caulfield now, so that's in her favour. If we need more time, we can have a look at the Magic Millions Vic 2YO Classic at Caulfield later in December."

Billy Slater celebrates Cooly’s maiden as Moody-Nolen mark 900 wins

National Rugby League legend Billy Slater was all smiles on Wednesday as the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Cooly (Cool Aza Beel), the filly he bred and part-owns, stormed to an impressive maiden victory at Caulfield Heath in the Sportsbet Fast Form Maiden Plate (1500m). The win was also a milestone for the trainer-jockey combination of Moody and Luke Nolen, marking their 900th success together. The pair have shared multiple Group 1 victories and were famously associated with champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit). "We probably should be at 1000, to be honest," Nolen said. "He had a bit of time away, and I've ridden part time for about six years with my injuries. Getting the job done says a lot about the people we actually are and I work better in a stable environment. That dynamic has always helped me." The Moody/Nolen partnership began by accident when the trainer mistakenly called Luke’s brother, Shaun, to ride a horse at Sale. "I'm good friends with Luke Currie and he rode for Pete for a time," Nolen explained. "Luke was tied more so with David Hall at the time, but he spent a bit of time over here at Caulfield riding work and Luke only ever called me Nolen. Pete didn't know there were two of us Nolens, so that's how it started. Shaun and I look alike, he's always been a bit heavier, but it's an interesting way for how it all started. It's a nice milestone, but it's also just a number on a page. But 900 for one bloke is quite remarkable really, particularly in an environment where we don't reward a lot of loyalty anymore."

You’re Two Vain maintains unbeaten run

Kilmore-based trainer Alicia McPherson is hoping that her four-year-old gelding You're Two Vain (Magnus) can continue to progress after he made it four wins from as many starts in Wednesday's Benchmark 66 (1000m) at Caulfield Heath. The son of Magnus (Flying Spur), who had wins at Seymour, Kilmore and Corowa prior to Wednesday's victory, ran out a 1.8-length winner over Hustle In Heels (Bel Esprit). "He's unbeaten and it's not easy, as you know. But he just keeps winning, it's good," McPherson told Racing.com. "He's a little bit revvy, so hopefully as he matures and does a bit more he gets better, but he is a little bit highly strung. We're hoping he keeps progressing. Of course it's hard to know, but he's training on well. He won at Corowa and trained on really well, so that gave us confidence coming here. His rating will go up, so we just have to keep stepping him up." Rider Cory Parish was also delighted with the win, but also that McPherson had a nice horse on her books. "Just ideal for Alicia to be able to have a nice horse, it's been great to be able to stick on him," he said. "That horse [Hustle In Heels] came to him and he put a couple of lengths on it easily and he's still got improvement for sure. Even from last time to this time, even in the jumpouts this time, we've held him back, made him learn something … normally I wouldn't have been able to come back, sit outside that horse, he'd want to charge. So on that alone, he's making progress really well and I think 1200 metres will be ideal when he really works it out."

Sweltering breaks maiden at 13th attempt

Having produced placings in both the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) and Inglis Bracelet (1600m), it was somewhat incredible that Sweltering (Too Darn Hot) had yet to break her maiden in 12 starts prior to Wednesday's Canterbury card but the four-year-old mare put that right when dominating proceedings in the Irresistible Pools And Spas Plate (1900m). The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) was sent off as one of a very short price at $1.12, but had no trouble to score under Tommy Berry as she defeated Shadashi (Shamus Award) by 3.6 lengths. "All the way through we were going to the Matriarch," Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. "But the ruling in Victoria is you can't race a maiden grade horse in a Matriarch, so on that basis they rejected our nomination. She was already down there and an Inglis purchase, so she was qualified for the Inglis Bracelet on the Thursday, which she ran well in. But she had always been prepped for that 2000-metre journey, and she got that today. Onwards and upwards from here. She is obviously a classy mare already with black type. That might just do her, and we worry about the autumn. But I will let Chris make the call."

Watch Me Rock draws ideally for Railway Stakes

Confidence surrounding Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) favourite Watch Me Rock (Awesome Rock) only strengthened after the Grant and Alana Williams-trained gelding came up with barrier four for Saturday’s mile feature at Ascot. The in-form five-year-old, who has won four of his past five starts, will carry 54 kilograms with William Pike booked to ride. Top weight Western Empire (Iffraaj) drew the inside alley and will be partnered by Billy Egan. It was a far tougher result for visiting contenders. Chris Waller’s Osipenko (Pierro) drew barrier 17 after making the trip west, while Annabel and Rob Archibald’s Depth Of Character (Deep Field) fared even worse with gate 20. Tim Clark will take the ride on Osipenko, with Reece Jones booked for Depth Of Character. Fourth emergency Cosmic Crusader (Maurice) has drawn ideally in barrier seven should he gain a start, and would carry just 53 kilograms.

Archibalds chasing consecutive Railways with Depth Of Character

Depth Of Character (Credit: Racing Photos)

Annabel and Rob Archibald will be bidding for back-to-back Railway Stakes wins at Ascot on Saturday, but the task has been made harder after their sole runner Depth Of Character drew barrier 16 in the Group 1 feature. "There was a horse called Marwong, who Simon Marshall won on when he was seventeen years old," Annabel Archibald said. "It won from [barrier] 16 in 1988, so I got it up on YouTube. I think there have been three winners from that gate. It's due again." Depth Of Character boasts a similar profile to the yard's 2024 winner Port Lockroy (Better Than Ready), who arrived into the Railway after a good effort in the Golden Eagle (1500m), and Depth Of Character ran fourth behind star mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in that race on November 1. "Reece [Jones] is riding in really good form at the moment and it's nice to give him a Group 1 opportunity," Archibald said. "The horse profiles well. He is coming off the back of a really good run in the Golden Eagle. Probably a similar run to what we had with Port Lockroy the year before. But Depth Of Character is better credentialled. He is a Group 2 winner, and he was unlucky not to run second in the Silver Eagle. He never got off the bridle and was uncontested to the line. He is going well. He is just going to need luck."

Bedggood weighs Cup options after wide draws

Gavin Bedggood heads into his hometown feature with significant numbers but tricky barriers after four of his horses accepted for Saturday’s Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m). Of the 18 runners, Bedggood has Casino Seventeen (Casino Prince), St Lawrence (Redwood), Jennilala (Shalaa) and former winner Charterhouse (Charming Thought) engaged, although he concedes not all will take their place, opening the door for emergencies Pondalowie (Deep Field) and Scheelite (Real Steel), who drew gates one and two respectively Casino Seventeen and St Lawrence came up with barriers 16 and 18, prompting Bedggood to consider Sunday’s $200,000 Kilmore Cup (Listed, 1600m). “He wants to get a soft run, do no work and be getting clean air late,” Bedggood said of Casino Seventeen. “Drawing 18 he probably has to go a long way back and it probably sets him a bit of a task. He’s got a nomination for Kilmore, so that might be an option. It’s not ideal for St Lawrence either. The Kilmore Cup is an option on Sunday, so we’ll have to have a look and see how it pans out.” Jennilala fared best of the quartet with gate five for Declan Bates, while Charterhouse, who claimed the race two years ago for Ciaron Maher, has barrier 13. “She was very plain last start [at Flemington], but it was very heavy ground, and you wouldn’t have even known she had gone around. She just had a day out on the heavy conditions. Her form previously had been pretty solid, so she should land in a prominent spot from that draw. She’s a lovely sound horse that has been effective on dry ground, so hopefully we’ll get that. His [Charterhouse] win for me at Sandown he was close to the speed but when he won the [Cranbourne] Cup here two years ago, he came from well back. I would say he lines up. There looks to be decent speed and he’s drawn wide, so it should generate good speed for him early with horses pushing forward, so it might not be that bad.”

Cranbourne Cup task for Sabaj

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Sabaj (Manhattan Rain) will bid to breakthrough at stakes level for the first time when he takes on Saturday's Cranbourne Cup. The four-year-old gelding placed in both the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m) and Tobin Bronze Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last season, and has run sixth in the Silver Eagle (1300m) before a Benchmark 84 (1600m) success in a pair of outings this term. “He is clearly a Group horse,” Kent Jnr told Racing.com. “His form prior to us obtaining him was very good. He had listed form over a mile, but it was a run when he went back to 1200 metres in the Tobin Bronze in a Group 2, against Reserve Bank, where he ran second that really solidified his talent, for us. He stormed home that day. He is a miler, looking at him, he is a miler, and he doesn’t look like a sprinter. Yet he ran Reserve Bank, who was a subsequent group 1 winner, to a length. I think he’s a very exciting horse.”

Tavi Time chasing another feature in The Gong

Kris Lees will decide in the next 24 hours how many runners he saddles in Saturday’s $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange, but Tavi Time (Tavistock) is locked in for a start despite drawing wide. The consistent gelding has come up with barrier 16, while stablemate Loch Eagle (Lonhro) has drawn 18 and also holds a nomination for the Mooloolaba Cup (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast. Lees will weigh up both races before determining Loch Eagle’s path but believes Tavi Time heads into The Gong as a genuine winning chance if the breaks fall his way. "Awkward gates, but there is a forecast for a bit of rain, so you never know with Kembla," Lees said. "It has always been the plan, the Big Dance into this race with Tavi Time. He has come on well, and he didn't have a great deal of luck in the Big Dance." Tavi Time missed the cut for last year’s edition and instead finished third in the 1600-metre consolation, but he is safely in the field this time courtesy of wins in the Summer Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) and Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) across the past 12 months. He has not been beaten far in any of his three runs this prep, including his Big Dance (1600m) effort when he ran eighth, just over three lengths from the winner Gringotts (Per Incanto), after a chequered passage. Lees said a strongly run race and clean air at the right time will be crucial to Tavi Time’s hopes. "I'd suggest tempo and a nice, smooth run," he said. "Big fields, that doesn't always happen, but if he can get the right set-up, he is always effective."

Parker has The Gong consolation with Well Timed

Last-start Ladies Day Cup (Listed, 1500m) runner-up Well Timed (Nicconi) will bid to provide his trainer Kerry Parker with a local prize when he tackles the Evergreen Turf Handicap (1600m) at Kembla Grange on Saturday. Although the consolation prize for the $1 million The Gong, Parker is hoping that the five-year-old gelding could perhaps find himself in the contest in 12 months time. “His aim was The Gong this preparation if he could get his benchmark up enough to get in it,’’ Parker told Racing NSW. “Because it’s a local race you aim for it but he probably would have found himself out of his league. To warrant having a run in The Gong you’ve got to earn it. He had a couple of chances that he didn’t win but there was always the option of this race if he didn’t make it. He’s still on the way up, he’s got better every prep and he’s consistent in his grade now. He was just beaten in a Listed race at Hawkesbury so he’s on his way. He gets into it well, he’s racing well, no doubt it looks a nice race for him. A little shower before Saturday would be nice. I’m pleased with him and he gets his chance to race really well.”

Daffy’s fairytale in contention for World Pool’s Moment of the Year

Kevin Daffy is no stranger to taking on racing’s heavyweights, but he now finds himself facing his biggest challenge yet. Oh Too Good (All Too Hard), the only horse in his stable, has been nominated for the World Pool Best Moment Of The Year award following her memorable win in the Caulfield Vase (Gr 3, 1600m). A shortlist of just four moments was chosen from 30 World Pool meetings held globally this year, with the winner to be decided by public vote. "It has blown me away," Daffy told Racing.com. Australian connections feature prominently, with three of the four finalists involving local horses. Alongside Oh Too Good’s Caulfield heroics are Via Sistina’s (Fastnet Rock) second Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) victory and Asfoora’s (Flying Artie) Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) success at York. The lone international contender is Forever Young’s (Real Steel) stirring Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) battle with Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) on dirt. Daffy believes the underdog nature of his story has struck a chord. "I think it's just the ultimate fairytale," he said. "One little guy with one little horse, taking on the biggest players in the country and doing well. I think it just gives everybody hope they can be involved and have success at the level. It cuts right through, not only among racing fans." Voting is open until the end of the month. You can vote here.

Spencer to debut for McKay stable at Wanganui

Spencer (Credit: Race Images)

Group 3 winner Spencer (Derryn) will step out under new management on Saturday when he lines up in the Manawatu ITM 1340 (1340m) at Wanganui, his first start since transferring to the Matamata stable of Peter and Shaun McKay. Previously prepared at Waverley by Erin Hocquard, the six-year-old proved a standout for his former trainer, winning eight of 26 starts and placing a further five times. His record includes last year’s Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Trentham and a runner-up finish in the Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m). He resumed with a win over 1200 metres at Trentham in September before finishing sixth at the same track and trip last month, after which he relocated to the McKay barn. “He arrived to us about three weeks ago in good condition and he is looking good,” Peter McKay said. “He seems a pretty happy and easy horse to have around. It is going to be pretty hard to try to improve on what he has done, he has been a pretty good horse.” McKay said he is still learning the horse but is keen to see how Spencer performs first-up for the new yard ahead of a return to Trentham in two weeks’ time to defend his Spring Sprint crown. “We are going to learn a bit about him on Saturday,” McKay said. “We are just feeling out things with him at the moment. This race is a lead-up to the Group 3 race at Wellington that he won at Te Rapa last year. At this stage, that is one of his main aims and we will work things out from there. He is high up in the ratings (100) but there are plenty of races around that he could have a go at.”

Wolfgang in good order following NZ Cup

Meanwhile, Peter McKay said that Wolfgang (Puccini) has returned to Matamata in good order following his unplaced run in the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Riccarton last Saturday, where the gelding struggled on heavy going. “He is home safe and happy,” McKay said. “I am wishing I didn’t start. I had thought about scratching him on the day, but we were down there and with the cost of getting there I thought we better run. In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have run him on that sort of track, it was not to his liking at all.” Looking ahead, the McKays are targeting further Cups, including next month’s Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and January’s Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), which Wolfgang won at Trentham earlier this year. “We have pencilled in the Waikato Cup, otherwise there are some races down in Wellington. We will just see how he comes through it and how he is feeling,” McKay said. “The big worry now is that any of the Cups races he is going to be carrying 59 kilograms. We have nominated for the Wellington Cup and it is still on the cards, we have just got to decide what we are going to do. There are a couple of set weights and penalty races down there which suits him along the way, and if he doesn’t go to the Wellington Cup, we might go to the St Leger, which is set weights and penalties.”

Agera targeting TAB Mufhasa Classic after standout campaign

Agera (Credit: Race Images)

Tony Pike’s six-year-old Agera (Complacent) has emerged as one of the north’s most improved gallopers this season and may be given his chance at weight-for-age level in the TAB Mufhasa Classic (1600m) at Trentham on December 6. After winning just two of 18 starts prior to this campaign, the gelding has won six of eight starts over the past four months, including the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) in October, the Feilding Cup (2050m) two weeks later, and last Saturday’s Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1530m). Those victories have earned Agera’s Hong Kong owners nearly $260,000 on top of his previous $80,000 in earnings. “It’s quite incredible how much he’s improved this campaign, from being a handy horse to one that’s now stringing them together all the way up to weight-for-age,” Pike said. “His wins in the Matamata and Feilding Cups have put him at the top of the qualifying order for the Taupo Cup (2000m), which has a stake of $100,000 as well as the $50,000 Prezzy Card bonus, so that’s an obvious target in late December. Looking at how to get him there, the TAB Mile at Trentham three weeks before would work well time-wise, so it’s a possibility but very much weather-dependent.” This weekend, Pike will focus on the Counties Cup meeting at Pukekohe Park, where he has five runners, including two-year-old debut winner Harvey Wallbanger (Home Affairs) in the Counties Challenge (Listed, 1100m). “His trial win was really good and he was very good at Ellerslie the way he went about it, he was very professional,” Pike said. “He’s shown natural improvement since, his work on Saturday morning was very good, and from the draw [barrier four] I expect him to be hard to beat.”

Aftermath well-placed to make Cup presence felt

Surprise weight-for-age packet Aftermath (Rock ‘N’ Pop) will be more in his comfort zone at Pukekohe Park this weekend. The Shaun and Emma Clotworthy-trained six-year-old will step out in Saturday’s Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) after coping admirably with a major rise in class in his two lead-up performances. The son of Rock ‘N’ Pop (Fastnet Rock) finished behind the major players at Ellerslie in both the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) and the Balmerino Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). “At weight-for-age, he surprised me with those couple of fourths and back in a handicap he’s definitely a better chance,” Shaun Clotworthy said. “His owner Terry Lines likes to have some of his horses racing on the bigger days if he can, and it just worked out that he was ready for 2000 metres and there weren’t many other options. He’d had a different preparation with races called off and the timing was right for him to get up to that distance, and he ran as well as you could expect.” Aftermath has trained on well since his Ellerslie exploits and is a previous course and distance winner. “He’s back on 53 kilograms so he’s meeting some of those better performing horses much better off at the weights, so I think he’s a good chance and Joe Doyle stays with him,” Clotworthy said. “I’ve been thrilled with him, he’s taken a long time to mould into a racehorse and had all sorts of unusual habits. He used to want to over-race and would get into trouble and was weak and not a great eater. He’s always showed quite a bit of ability, and he’s come solid this preparation.”

Entain introduce new tracking and timing system

New Zealand racing is taking a major leap forward with the rollout of a new 4G real-time GPS-RTK (real-time kinematic positioning) timing and tracking system that is transforming how races are run, viewed, and enjoyed for Kiwi racing fans. In a partnership between Entain Australia and New Zealand, the regulatory body TAB New Zealand, and technology provider tripleSdata, the next-generation 4G GPS-RTK system is being implemented across 30 racecourses nationwide, covering more than 90 per cent of all race meetings across both thoroughbred and harness codes. The new system allows racing fans and Trackside viewers to see their horse’s exact position and speed in real time, with live race maps and on-screen graphics displayed on Trackside TV and TAB digital platforms. In addition to transforming live race coverage, the new GPS-RTK system will deliver comprehensive post-race sectional and timing data, offering racing fans unprecedented insight into race performance. “It gives punters more confidence, trainers and owners more insight, and fans a completely new way to experience the thrill of racing,” TAB New Zealand chief executive Nick Roberts said. “This is another example of the investment that can occur in the New Zealand racing industry through strong partnerships.” Entain's chief media officer Christopher Haigh said rolling out GPS technology on this scale is a significant technical achievement. “Real-time tracking and advanced data analytics are key parts of modernising New Zealand racing and taking the viewing experience to the next level for racing lovers,” Haigh said. “They can analyse races more deeply, understanding which horses are finishing strongly, how pace shapes affect results, and how runners perform under pressure. It takes form analysis in New Zealand to a new level.”

HK: Voyage Bubble faces Romantic Warrior in Jockey Club Cup

BOCHK Hong Kong Race Day sees the jurisdiction’s preeminent horses clash at Sha Tin in three important lead-up races: Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m), Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) and Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m). Horses seeking a start at the Hong Kong International Races on December 14 feature, spearheaded by big names such as Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) and the world’s best sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress). New kid on the block My Wish (Flying Artie) will also aim to enhance his standing. The Jockey Club Cup sees ten-time Group 1 winner Romantic Warrior, who will be ridden by James McDonald, meet Triple Crown hero Voyage Bubble. Romantic Warrior returns following an extended injury layoff; Voyage Bubble steps out after finishing 12th first-up in October’s Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m). Zac Purton, who pairs with Voyage Bubble, said: “The Sha Tin Trophy was a race that, at the weights, he was going to struggle to be competitive in. He was really just out there to start going through his preparation. I – he’s in pretty good shape.”

HK: Moreira back where his legend began at IJC

Champion Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira will make a sentimental return to the venue and event which catapulted him to worldwide acclaim when he rides in the International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley on December 10. Moreira was Singapore-based when competing in the 2012 edition of the championship, when the title was still up for grabs going into the last leg of the four-race competition with Great Britain’s Ryan Moore and local champion Zac Purton among those still in contention. Purton had the strongest chance in the last leg, riding the favourite, Chancellor (Fastnet Rock), and looked the winner passing the 200-metre mark until Moreira’s mount, Noble Deluxe (Footstepsinthesand), seemingly came from nowhere to win both the race and his jockey the title. After short riding stints in Hong Kong in 2010 and 2012, Moreira relocated permanently in 2013 where he quickly became a four-time Hong Kong Champion jockey; 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2020/21. Moreira, who departed Hong Kong’s riding ranks at the end of 2022, hopes to add another IJC title to his long list of achievements, which includes Singapore champion jockey crowns in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. “That was the start of it and I ended up going to Hong Kong just because I was able to perform in that jockey challenge,” Moreira said. “It was 2012 … and it definitely brings back those good memories." Looking ahead to the competition format, he said the random allocation of horses made it fairer for all the jockeys. “Hopefully a bit of the luck of the draw will come to me because that’s all you need,’’ he said. “And you have to make sure you bring your A-game, otherwise you’ll be going home winless. It’s a tough competition. They are going to make it tough for me as well, but with respect.”

Palace Pier filly provides profit aplenty as bargain buy mare breeds €220,000 top lot

The Irish National Stud was rewarded for some savvy purchasing at last year’s mare sales when a Palace Pier (Kingman) filly out of the Juddmonte-bred Big Break (Dansili) brought €220,000 (approx. AU$392,830) from Paul McCartan, who signed at CBS Bloodstock, during day two of the Goffs November Foal Sale on Tuesday.

Twelve months ago Big Break was catalogued as the dam of two winners at paddocks, including the Listed scorer Georgeville. The daughter of Dansili (Danehill), a sister to Famous Name, was duly picked up with the Palace Pier filly in utero for just 30,000gns.

But by the time her daughter hit the ring in Goffs on Tuesday, her breeding record had expanded to five winners, a roll of honour that includes the highly rated Frankel (Galileo) three-year-old Gran Descans and the Lope De Vega (Shamardal) two-year-old Pacific Mission.

The latter has developed into a high-class juvenile, which in turn has added further black type to an already deep page. Pacific Mission finished runner-up in the May Hill (Gr 2, 1m) Stakes in September and was last seen running on into second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f).

Cathal Beale, the Irish National Stud chief executive, said good fortune, rather than good foresight, was the main factor at play.

“It was a great bit of luck really,” he said. “Ninety-nine times out of 100 you buy these mares and nothing bounces your way, but on this occasion everything that could’ve gone right, went right. We’re extraordinarily lucky that Palace Pier has had such a good season.

“The mare herself always had lots of residual value, but the two-year-old and the three-year-old have turned out to be very good. The Frankel horse has been good all season and then the two-year-old got her black type and was unlucky at the Breeders’ Cup. There’s a helluva lot of luck attached to it, more than anything else though.”

McCartan said the filly represented the complete package, with an improving pedigree as well as an eye-catching physique.

“She has a beautiful Juddmonte pedigree, and the update with Pacific Mission was a big factor,” he said. “We’ll hopefully get more black type there. A beautifully balanced filly, all quality, and we all liked her. These are the ones that you need to be buying. As I said about a filly I bought last year, if the pinhook didn’t work out, I’d be very, very happy to keep her and race her.”

Palace Pier has made a promising start to his stallion career, with his nine European winners featuring six black-type performers.

“Palace Pier has made a great start, and that was a big factor too,” added McCartan. “He’s a very admired stallion now, and sought after. The whole package was great. The dam’s full-brother Famous Name was as tough a horse as you could imagine.”

Another lively day of selling yielded yet more year-on-year increases across the key market indices.

Turnover reached €8,720,500 (approx. AU$15,571,193), which was a four per cent gain, the average was €42,960 (approx. AU$76,700), also a four per cent increase, while the median went up six per cent to €35,000 (approx. AU$62,495). The clearance rate was 83 per cent as 203 foals sold from 246 offered.

International Jockeys’ Championship berth hangs in the balance as Ho and Chau slot doubles

Vincent Ho (Credit: HKJC)

The battle between Vincent Ho and Jerry Chau for a prized berth as Hong Kong leading homegrown rider in next month’s International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) intensified at Happy Valley on Wednesday night as the pair traded blows with doubles.

Chau temporarily took the lead in the standings with a race-to-race double for David Eustace to claim the lead as the top eligible homegrown jockey ahead of the December 10 IJC before 2023 IJC champion Ho fired back with a brace of his own.

With only two meetings left before the selection cut-off after the November 26 meeting at Happy Valley, Ho holds sway with ten wins from Chau (nine) with Matthew Poon (seven), Matthew Chadwick (seven) and Derek Leung (six) all in contention.

Ho teamed with Caspar Fownes to snare the Class 4 The Indian Recreation Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1000m) in brilliant fashion with Mr Desira (All Too Hard), before guiding Frankie Lor’s Glorious Journey (Sacred Falls) to victory in the first section of the Class 4 Caroline Hill Handicap (1650m).

“The IJC is very important but after a long injury, it’s hard to get the momentum and I’m glad that Fownes is supporting me and a few others trainers but it’s hard to get rides,” Ho said.

“I’m doing my best on every single horse to hopefully get in the IJC. It’s a great privilege to ride in it and I’ll just do my best.”

Chau and Eustace struck with Apolar Fighter (Not A Single Doubt) in the Class 5 Tai Hang Handicap (1650m) before scoring with Podium (Medaglia D’Oro), whose victory in the Class 5 Hing Fat Handicap gave Eustace three wins from only five starters across the past two meetings.

“I need to thank David who has given me great support this season,” Chau, 25, said. “He has been giving me quality rides and tonight, the horses have been running well.

“[Regarding the IJC], it’s still too early to say but I will try my best because it’s a very good opportunity for me. I’m trying to get some good results early in the season and to have a chance to fight for a place in the IJC – I will try 200 percent and hopefully I will get in.”

With ten riders already confirmed for the IJC, competition for the final two positions will continue at Sha Tin at the glittering Bank of China (Hong Kong) Race Day this Sunday before next Wednesday’s fixture.

Zac Purton qualifies for the IJC as last season’s Hong Kong champion jockey and will be joined by defending champion Mickael Barzalona, James McDonald, Christophe Lemaire, Umberto Rispoli, Hollie Doyle, Rachel King, Joao Moreira, William Buick and Ryan Moore (subject to fitness).

With 37 wins, Purton is forging towards a ninth Hong Kong jockeys’ championship but much interest now centres on who will fill both the leading homegrown rider’s position and also that of the second-placed jockey in the 2025/26 standings.

Luke Ferraris (15 wins) currently sits second behind Purton but ahead of Hugh Bowman (13), Alexis Badel (12), Karis Teetan (11) and Lyle Hewitson (10), who scored on David Hayes-trained Samarkand (Mongolian Khan) in the second section of the Class 4 Caroline Hill Handicap (1650m).

Hayes and Harry Bentley sealed doubles with Romantic Son’s (Smart Missile) success in the Class 3 Cotton Handicap (1200m) as Hayes cemented second place in the trainers’ championship with 18 wins behind Mark Newnham (22).

“Thrilled to have a double - it keeps me in touch with the lead. I think they're two horses to follow and I'm very happy,” Hayes said.

Bentley also combined with Danny Shum and Win Method (Written Tycoon) to land the second section of the Class 4 So Kon Po Handicap (1200m), before Lakeshore Hero (U S Navy Flag) made a triumphant return to racing after recovering from a heart irregularity to win the first section of the Class 4 So Kon Po Handicap (1200m) for David Hall and Andrea Atzeni at his first start since July.

“He's coming off a heart irregularity and he's not been an easy horse to work with, he's been quite timid amongst horses and wants to over-race and do a few things wrong,” Hall said.

“The owner has had to be patient - he's had a long break and reset. His trials have been good coming back and obviously the race now tells you that the horse has got more confidence to handle it the way he did today.

“We brought him here to try and get some speed for him so he would relax, and then it was about how confident he would be amongst the other horses. To his credit he took the run and went up the inside and finished off.”

Atzeni closed the meeting with victory on Newnham’s Hong Kong International Sale graduate Super Unicorn (Savabeel) in the Class 3 Causeway Bay Handicap (1650m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with Bank of China (Hong Kong) Race Day.

Sheza Alibi

Talk about hitting your bullseyes.

Four years ago, long-time Queensland hobby breeders Fred and Desley Monsour were looking for a stallion to cover their mare Sheza Gypsy, by the relatively obscure stallion Shaft and out of a fairly plain female family.

Their trusted associate Verna Metcalfe went out on something of a tangent, and told them to try Japanese-bred shuttle stallion Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact), then standing his third season at Coolmore Stud, for just $13,750 (inc GST).

He would only have one more spring here, as Australian breeders didn’t exactly beat a path to his door. It seems they’ve been largely vindicated.

Saxon Warrior has had 95 starters in Australia, with four crops running, for just one black-type winner. That’s a humble 1.05 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio, which compares to his slightly better world mark of 4.09 per cent (19 from 464).

And speaking of vindication, that one Australian black-type winner happens to be the foal created by the Monsours on Metcalfe’s recommendation - Sheza Alibi.

“I liked Saxon Warrior’s breeding, and I liked his race record, and I thought he was nicely priced,” Metcalfe, now of Alma Vale Thoroughbreds, told It’s In The Blood.

Saxon Warrior had some things going for him, for a horse who’d raced in Europe standing in Australia. He had a two-year-old Group 1 to his name, in Doncaster’s Racing Post Trophy (Gr 1, 1m), and added a second at three, also over, in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket.

But still, like many a European shuttler - despite their strong credentials - he was a hard sell in the Australian market. His average Australian yearling price kicked off well enough, at $98,000 in 2022, but a lack of results pushed it to $30,000 in the past two years.

“It’s different when people breed to race though,” Metcalfe said. “You’re not looking for something that’s going to do well in the sales ring.

“I thought we’d get a good physical; I thought we’d get a racehorse. I’d had a lot to do with that family, and I thought Sheza Gypsy should go to a stallion with a bit of muscle and scope, because she was a bit narrow herself.”

The Monsours, who retired from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, had been breeding since the 1970s, mostly to race and in a small way with only a few mares at a time.

They “had a lot of fun”, Desley says, with the gelding they bred and named for Fred - Freddie Fox Trot (Foxwedge). He won 12 races, eight of them at the Gold Coast, where his name and penchant for winning gave him something of a cult following.

He had a dozen goes at black type, running Listed thirds in the Gold Coast Goldmarket (Listed, 1200m) and Grafton’s Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) in 2019.

“We had a few good horses early on. They won and they were keeping us involved, and Freddie was probably the best of them,” Desley said.

“We’d have two in every Saturday, and we always ended up in the winners’ circle at some point, mostly at the Gold Coast.”

After decades of trying, the Monsours appear to have bred a very good one, as Sheza Alibi has shown in her past two starts, winning The Vanity (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Derby day, and last Saturday’s Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m).

The great pity for the Monsours - who also bred her second and third dams - was that a move to scale back in their older age meant they put up Sheza Alibi for sale as a weanling on Inglis Digital in June, 2023.

She was bought by another Fred - central Queensland grazier Fred Noffke - for just $10,000. She’s now won $511,000 for him from just seven starts, with seemingly plenty more wins to come.

Noffke was also advised by Metcalfe, having been steered her way to ask about the filly she’d helped create and raise, while then at Middlebrook Valley Lodge.

“Fred Noffke rang me a couple of times actually,” Metcalfe said. “I said, ‘Look, you should buy her. She’ll be a cheap filly, because she’s not a sales horse, because she’s not big and burly. But she’s a racehorse - she’s an athlete’.

“You could tell that looking at her as a yearling. She wasn’t the boss of the herd in the paddock, but when they broke into a gallop, she’d be first up the hill.”

Noffke sent the filly to trainer Kris Hansen in Rockhampton, where she ran second on debut and won by 2.63 lengths at start number two. Metcalfe received another phone call.

“Fred rang again and said, ‘I think I’ve got a serious horse here’,” she recalled.

Sheza Alibi went to Townsville, winning the prestigious $100,000 QTIS 2YO Classic (1200m) - as a $4.80 chance knocking off a $1.65 favourite - and then it was off to the big smoke.

At Eagle Farm in late June, she lined up as an unwanted $18 chance in the Tatts Stakes (Listed, 1400m), but ran a strong 1.93-length second. The horse who beat her was from the Chris Waller stable and had recently won his debut at Canterbury. He’d achieve quite some more fame four months later when winning the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Running second to Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) prompted another phone call from Noffke to Metcalfe.

“He asked me which big city trainer he should send her to,” Metcalfe says. “I said, ‘Well there’s Chris Waller, Ciaron Maher, or Peter Moody is very good with fillies, and he’d look after her’, because she’s not a very big, strong filly.”

Noffke duly sent the filly to his fellow Queenslander Moody, and after three starts for two wins and a third, he and co-trainer Katherine Coleman are making plans for the autumn, which are set to include the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) - which might bring another meeting with Autumn Boy.

“I’m really happy for Fred,” Metcalfe said. “He listened to me, and then he rang me and thanked me for talking him into buying her. It means a lot when people do that, and you love to see people like that get a win.

“He’s got a very very valuable broodmare prospect on his hands now.”

Sheza Alibi may turn out prolific, which would be fitting since she comes from a line of prolific mares, foals-wise. Second dam Gypsy Mai (Our Maizcay), third dam Gypsy Ahlee (Alquoz) and fourth dam War Gypsy (Rascolink) - who Fred Monsour bought privately to kick all this off - each had 12 named foals.

Despite all that progeny, there’s precious little black type amongst it - another reason that the Monsours very much hit the jackpot when they sent Sheza Gypsy to Saxon Warrior.

Gypsy Ahlee threw Beethog (Shovhog), who won at Group 3 and Listed class at the Gold Coast and went on to throw Glistening (Zoustar), who won the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) of 2021 for Richard and Michael Freedman, and a Melbourne Listed.

In addition, Gypsy Ahlee left the aforementioned Gypsy Mai, who ran third in Sydney Listed class, in 2001.

Gypsy Mai in turn had a low-runs black-type winner in Rom Baro (Time Thief), who won the Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m) before going to Hong Kong as Kingsfield, winning four races up until 2019. Gypsy Mai also begat Tamieka (Viscount), dam of Freddie Fox Trot.

One foal before Rom Baro, Gypsy Mai threw Sheza Gypsy, who had two foals before Sheza Alibi. Gypsy Fox (Foxwedge) was unplaced in 13 starts, and Super Gypsy (Super One) couldn’t fill a hole in six. And then, by Saxon Warrior out of nowhere, along came Sheza Alibi.

She’s been followed only by a yet-to-race two-year-old colt by King’s Legacy, who was bought by trainer John Thompson and Boomer Bloodstock for $160,000 at Inglis Classic this year - which looks an astute purchase now, particularly since Sheza Alibi hadn’t raced at the time.

As the Monsours have wound down, Sheza Gypsy hasn’t been served in the past two seasons. She was also put up for sale on Inglis Online last July and bought by Mayfield Pastoral for all of $1,250 - astounding buying considering Sheza Alibi had had those first four starts by then, including her Eagle Farm Listed second.

Here’s the one source of regret in the saga for Metcalfe.

“I wanted to buy Sheza Gypsy but I got busy, as you do on a stud farm, and I forgot to bid on her,” she says. “I’ll be forever kicking myself, particularly since she went so cheap.”

The only piece of inbreeding brought by the mating of Saxon Warrior over Sheza Gypsy is a doubling of Danehill at 4f x 4m, coming in strong as the stallion’s second damsire and the dam’s third sire.

And Sheza Alibi looks to be franking the stats that show if you’re going to duplicate Danehill, gender-balanced is the way to go.

Unsurprisingly, there’s few nicking stats for putting Saxon Warrior or his sire Deep Impact over a very Australian female family with the very unsuccessful Shaft (Flying Spur) figuring as the damsire.

Further in, Sheza Alibi may take some strength from a 4m x 6f of Halo (Hail To Reason), who’s Saxon Warrior’s third sire and comes into Flying Spur’s female family.

Plus there’s a 6m x 5f of the great Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native). He’s the sire of the damsire of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), who’s Saxon Warrior’s damsire, and is Flying Spur’s damsire.

Some key mares are repeated, with Natalma (Native Dancer) making ten appearances and her dam Almahmoud (Mahmoud) 12, both evenly split on either side of the pedigree.

Plucky Leige (Spearmint) is at 9m, 9m, 9m x 8m, 9m - a long way back but through a good spread of three of her four famous sons in Admiral Drake, Sir Gallahad and Bois Roussell - the last being duplicated up close in fourth dam War Gypsy’s family.

And Lalun (Djeddah) bobs up at 7m x 9m.

Nearco and Hyperion share top billing as stallions, with 14 spots each in the first nine generations, one more than Native Dancer.
