Manhattan Rain (Credit: Geisel Park)

While you’d think standing a half-brother to Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) in Western Australia might have been an easier sell than it has been, Geisel Park Stud have high hopes a booming run of results will spark a surge in demand for Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) now and into the future.

The Golden Slipper winner-producing stallion went west in 2022, when bought by Geisel Park and a group of WA-based breeders after previously standing at Arrowfield Stud and Victoria’s Blue Gum Farm.

However, the 19-year-old has been something of a slow burner in his new home.

After starting with 68 mares at $8,800, he’s covered books of 37 and 31 in the past two springs at $8,250, and this season has been looking set to serve a similar number at $6,050.

The past few weeks may alter those projections.

On Cox Plate Day, Manhattan Rain’s seven-year-old son Jigsaw looked a sprinter revived when he took the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), having also scored the start before in Cranbourne’s Apache Cat Classic (1200m) for his first win in two-and-a-half years.

What's On

A week later, on VRC Derby day, Manhattan Rain’s lightly raced six-year-old daughter New York Lustre broke through for a first black type success in the Begonia Belle Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

And three weeks on from that, on Saturday Manhattan Rain landed the feature race double at Cranbourne’s highlight meeting of the year.

First, exciting four-year-old Sabaj took the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m) for a fifth win from eight starts, becoming his sire’s 21st individual stakes victor, and earning predictions from co-trainer Mick Price that there’d be “a good race” in prospect for him in the autumn.

Then 40 minutes later Jigsaw made it three wins on the bounce by leading throughout in the $1 million The Meteorite (1200m), with his trainer Cindy Alderson earning high praise for her work in revitalising the gelding.

The string of results has come at an opportune time, with Manhattan Rain’s first WA-bred crop of two-year-olds about to hit the tracks, and with Geisel Park reporting word from local stables that there are several promising types among them.

Geisel Park owner Eddie Rigg hopes WA breeders will have been as impressed as he has been with the stallion’s bounteous season so far.

While Manhattan Rain sits 51st on Australia’s general sires’ table, only nine stallions have sired more stakes winners this season than his three, and they include such luminaries as I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) (seven), Street Boss (Street Cry) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia) (five each) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor) (four each).

“What a spring carnival he’s had,” Rigg told ANZ News of Manhattan Rain.

“He gets winners all the time at a good rate, but he’s really going through a purple patch at the moment. Jigsaw winning The Meteorite, New York Lustre winning on Derby day, and now Sabaj looks like a ripper.

“I think these results he’s been getting will cause a realisation, particularly for some people over here, that he is a really good stallion. People should be sending their mares to him.

“He’s always been a good stallion, and he looks even better today than when we got him three years ago. But we just haven’t had the support which he deserves. We’d have hoped he’d have got more support than he has so far, but hopefully results like Saturday’s will give him a good push along.

“It’s not too late to book in for this season, after all.”

Rigg said Manhattan Rain would have a number of offspring to go under the hammer at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in February, including an “exceptional” Geisel Park colt out of Troodles (Star Witness) who “we expect will sell very well”.

He hopes by then Manhattan Rain’s first western two-year-olds will have fomented keen interest in his yearlings.

The sire’s number one performer so far has been a star juvenile in 2017 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) heroine She Will Reign, who went on to add a second elite victory in the MVRC Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

Overall, Manhattan Rain has six two-year-old stakes winners from 150 runners at 4.0 per cent.

“His first lot of two-year-olds are about to start racing here in Perth. I expect they’ll go pretty well,” Riggs said. “If they go well over on the east coast in a pretty competitive environment, I’m sure they’ll do well over here.

“We’ve heard plenty of good reports about them.”

Geisel Park will race one Manhattan Rain two-year-old who Rigg considers classy enough to have earned his highest plaudit - to be named after a word or phrase from his favourite movie, The Castle.

Following on from Sponge Cake (Harry Angel), Rissoles (Playing God), Seasoning (All American), Move The Torana (Lean Mean Machine) and Ascot winner Dug Another Hole (Universal Ruler), here comes It’s Chicken (Manhattan Rain), out of the Star Witness mare Star Subject.

“I only give them Castle names if they’re any good, and It’s Chicken looks alright,” Rigg said of the filly, who’ll be trained by Daniel and Ben Pearce, and was broken in by another prominent trainer, Dion Luciani.

“Dion is one of the main breakers in Perth, and he thinks It’s Chicken is one of the nicest two-year-olds he’s touched this year.”

Since siring his star juvenile She Will Reign, Manhattan Rain has also again shown his versatility, with staying filly Benagil winning this year’s SAJC Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m).

The sire’s other Group 1 winner has been Whisky Baron, who was South Africa’s Champion Middle Distance Horse in 2016-17, with six wins from 1200 metres to 2000 metres capped by Kenilworth’s Sun Met Handicap (Gr 1, 2000m). That win triggered a European campaign, where Whisky Baron was second in Goodwood’s Celebration Mile (Gr 2, 1m).

“He’s produced a Golden Slipper winner, but they can stay on a bit too,” said Rigg, noting the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Runaway had won the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) and the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), had contested a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and even won a 3280-metre steeplechase at Sale a month off turning eight.

“They can also train on. Jigsaw’s seven and going as well as ever, if not better. New York Lustre’s six.”

Aside from the stallion having left performers over a range of distances, Rigg believes Manhattan Rain also makes appeal as a broodmare sire, like his more famous half-brother Redoute’s Choice, three times Australia’s champion sire and champion broodmare sire.

Both are members of families that keep on giving, being sons of the great Australian blue hen Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), and with the hugely influential American matriarch Best In Show (Traffic Judge) as their fourth dam.

Furthermore, Manhattan Rain’s own sire Encosta De Lago won four Australian broodmare sire titles.

So far, Manhattan Rain as a broodmare sire has five stakes winners from a relatively small group of 216 starters, at 2.3 per cent. That compares to his ten years older half-brother Redoute’s Choice’s 182 from 3,220 at 5.7 per cent.

“We think Manhattan Rain is going to end up being a very good broodmare sire,” Riggs said. “The early signs are very promising in that department, and with that pedigree on his side, it just gives him every chance, being a half to Redoute’s Choice and out of Shantha’s Choice. Having Encosta for a dad doesn’t hurt either.

“That was one of the reasons we bought him - his pedigree is so good.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for Captivant

Captivant (Credit: Racing Photos)

Kia Ora Stud’s first-season sire Captivant (Capitalist) sired his first winner when the Jenny Graham-trained Vantorix (2 g ex Miss Loren by Stryker) struck on debut over 1005 metres at Taree on Sunday. The gelding, ridden by Ash Morgan, was produced down the outside and drew clear impressively in the closing stages to win the open maiden contest by 2.4 lengths. Dandeelion Wishes (Hidden Dragon) finished second with Smokey Saint (D’Argento) another 0.9 lengths back in third. Bred by Mullaglass Stud, Vantorix first sold for $40,000 to Kiwi Bloodstock at the Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale before being picked up by his trainer for $30,000 at the Classic Yearling Sale this year. A half-brother to San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) scorer Raging Force (Cosmic Force), he is the fifth foal and third winner out of the Listed-placed Stryker (Fastnet Rock) mare Miss Loren. Winner of the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) as a juvenile, Captivant stands for a fee of $19,800 (inc GST).

Overpass in good form ahead of Winterbottom defence

Regular Perth raider Overpass (Vancouver) has returned to Ascot for another tilt at the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), aiming to become the first horse in the race’s history to win three consecutive editions. The Bjorn Baker-trained seven-year-old lines up for his sixth Western Australian campaign, having already built a formidable record in the state. His past visits have delivered consecutive wins in the 2023 and 2024 runnings of The Quokka (1200m), as well as back-to-back Winterbottom victories. His lone miss was a brave fifth in this year’s Quokka. Racing manager Luke Hilton said the gelding has arrived in career-best form following a strong spring that included a high-class fourth in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), where he finished just 1.5 lengths behind star sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress). "It was probably the best run of his career," Hilton said. "He got a week out after The Everest, came back, had a good trial the other day and he's in really good form. When he went to get on the plane, he looked better than he did before The Everest, so I'm excited." Overpass travelled west alongside stablemate Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert), who finished down the field in Saturday’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). The gelding’s primary aim is the Gold Rush (1400m) on December 13, which may also come under consideration for Overpass. "We may even look at a Gold Rush this year with him," Hilton said. "He's older now and tends to not be as good second-up, but we've never tried him over a bit further second-up."

Brayden Star heads to the Zipping

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will roll the dice in Saturday’s $750,000 Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) at Caulfield with Brayden Star (Twilight Son). The gelding already boasts strong credentials over the Caulfield trip, having claimed October’s Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m). He has since tackled the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington during Cup week, finishing tenth and fourth respectively. Busuttin said a piece of work at Cranbourne last Saturday forced a rethink about going straight for the Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2400m) on December 13 with the seven-year-old. "I think the Pakenham Cup is a good race for him, but he does very well," he said. "He had a gallop, and we were in two minds whether we go to the Zipping…or straight to Pakenham knowing it was softer. But the way he pulled up…he was blowing, so we might have to send him around in the Zipping." While realistic about the challenge at weight-for-age, Busuttin said the prize-money cannot be ignored. "It's alright to have a spin around in a $750,000 race and I'm sure he'll weigh-in…but it's probably beyond his grasp at weight-for-age," he said. Looking ahead, a trip to New Zealand for the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in March remains on the table for the six-time winner.

Caulfield plan for She’s A Hustler

Grahame Begg will raise the bar for emerging mare She’s A Hustler (Ace High) on Saturday, confirming the Zipping Classic as her final run of the spring. The trainer said the timing and conditions make it the ideal opportunity to test her at the trip for the first time, with an eye to shaping her long-term targets. "The Zipping Classic has been in my thoughts for a while, and it worked out well with the time frame three weeks after her last run. It’s a good time to step her out to 2400 metres at the tail end of the spring carnival," Begg told Racing.com. The five-year-old has had just three runs leading into Saturday, resulting in victories at Flemington and in the Tesio Stakes (Gr 3, 2040m) at The Valley before she finished runner-up in the Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) last start. "She ran very well [last time] – the ground dulled her acceleration,” her trainer said. “She ran very well and in the last 100 metres she kept on coming. We want to try and season her up a bit. We’ve protected her well so far…it’s a good time to step her up. If she’s fortunate to win, if we think she’s going to measure up to a better race such as the Caulfield Cup, it gets you over a few obstacles such as qualifying; it won’t guarantee a start, but it will put you a long way in front of the others."

Randwick on the cards for Sabaj

Sabaj (Credit: Racing Photos)

Plans for Sabaj’s (Manhattan Rain) next run have shifted again, with co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr confirming the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m) winner is under strong consideration for The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick on December 13. Kent Jnr told RSN that the $2 million Group 2 handicap shapes as an ideal assignment, particularly given how well the gelding has come through Saturday’s win. "We’re keeping an open mind. He’s pulled up super. He’s very sound and he looked great in the body, we’re going to keep the door ajar on The Ingham in three weeks’ time," he said. With 53 kilograms under the handicap conditions, Sabaj sits second-favourite. "He will get in with 53 kilos and Gringotts will get 61, so for $2 million it will be heavily considered," Kent Jnr added. The Cranbourne Cup delivered Kent Jnr and Mick Price their second straight win in the race, backing up Globe’s (Charm Spirit) victory 12 months earlier. And Sabaj’s effort, which included breaking the track record, impressed his trainers given the challenges he faced mid-race. "He’s exciting. He’s still immature…his best is way ahead of him,” Kent Jnr said. “He’s got a turn of foot, he’s got a wicked action and he’s a clean-winded animal who is clearly a winner. It wasn’t an advantage to be out wide and circling the field…he will be better on bigger tracks such as Randwick and Flemington."

New Zealand Group 1 aim for Jigsaw

Cindy Alderson is weighing up a trans-Tasman trip for in-form sprinter Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain), with the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on January 24 now a genuine option. The Auckland Racing Club reached out to gauge interest following the gelding’s strong spring, capped by a hat-trick of feature sprint wins culminating in The Meteorite (1200m) on Saturday. Alderson said Jigsaw’s form makes the New Zealand feature an appealing target. "It’s not beyond the realms of possibilities that he could venture over there with the form he’s in as you’ve got to keep taking the opportunities when they present themselves," the trainer told RSN. A Group 1 victory would be a significant milestone for the seven-year-old and Alderson, as well as for Logan Bates, should he take the ride. While Jigsaw is among possible contenders for Southside Racing’s other $1 million slot race The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham on December 13, Alderson said a start there appears unlikely. "I don’t think it’s likely at this stage. I don’t know he won’t run 1400 metres, but he’s done a good enough job to have even got to this stage at his age. I don’t know whether we need to push him any harder," she said.

Regal Zeus takes the Kilmore Cup

Favourite Regal Zeus (5 g Zoustar – Quiet Kitten by Kitten’s Joy) delivered a commanding display in Sunday’s Kilmore Cup (Listed, 1600m), cruising to victory under Daniel Stackhouse and putting a four length-gap on his four rivals. With the field reduced by significant scratchings – many runners instead opting for the Cranbourne Cup over the same distance – Stackhouse ensured no hard-luck stories, dictating the tempo aboard the son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) in a steadily run affair and opening the race up early around the tight-turning circuit. Regal Zeus was still coasting approaching the final furlong and jogged to the line in front of a jubilant ownership group, rewarding John McArdle’s decision to scratch him from Saturday’s meeting. "He’s tough, he’s honest, nothing’s gone right this prep," the trainer told Racing.com. "We got him here today…I thought the tight turning track would suit him, he’d be able to scoot off the turns, and he did that. He was impressive… we’ll find something else for him in two or three weeks.” Stablemate El Rocko (Fastnet Rock) faded late to finish fourth, beaten only 0.3 lengths for second. His effort may signal the end of a remarkable and taxing campaign that has stretched across 18 starts in ten months, including a Sale Cup (Listed, 1600m) win at his 16th outing. "He’s probably just come to the end of it… I’d say he’ll go to the paddock now," McArdle said.

Sestina springs surprise in Winton Cup

Local trainer Jo-Anne Dalton was expecting little more than a tune-up for Sestina (Lonhro) in Sunday’s Winton Cup (1400m) at Ascot Park, but the six-year-old delivered a shock victory ahead of next weekend’s Cromwell Cup (2030m). "It’s a big surprise," Dalton said. "Even Tina [Comignaghi, jockey] thought she’d be flat-footed today over 1400 metres. We normally need a wet track for this mare to be competitive over these shorter trips, but she’s pulled one out of the box today!" Sestina settled fourth off a strong tempo and made a sweeping run down the outside to score by 0.5 lengths over Tomasina (Darci Brahma) and Ex Aye (Mongolian Falcon). Bred by Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, Sestina has amassed five wins and 11 placings from 31 starts. She next heads to Sunday’s Cromwell Cup with Dalton confident the longer distance will suit. A half-brother to the mare by Sword Of State (Snitzel) is set to be presented by Cambridge Stud at Book 1 of the 2026 NZB National Yearling Sale, the colt catalogued as Lot 57.

Wanganui win sets up Cup back-up for Royal Flower

Royal Flower’s (Proisir) powerful victory at Wanganui on Saturday has earned the seven-year-old a tilt at black-type next weekend, with Gail Temperton set to back her up into the Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m). The mare delivered an authoritative performance in a $50,000 open handicap, towing the field up to tearaway leader Sagunto (O’Reilly) before taking control prior to the turn. Under a strong ride from Mereana Hudson, Royal Flower stayed on resolutely to score by 1.3 lengths over Comedy (Mongolian Khan). Temperton, who bred, owns and trains Royal Flower, was duly delighted. "It’s a big thrill any time you win a race, but that was a very good win by the horse and an amazingly good ride," she said. "Mereana was sitting down and pushing her along from quite early… she really controlled the race from there." Temperton confirmed Royal Flower will step straight into next Saturday’s Wanganui Cup despite typically spacing her runs. "It’s not my habit to back horses up as quickly as that, but she can do it,” she said. “She hadn’t raced for a month until now… it’s not like we’re making her do these quick back-ups every time." A stakes win remains the missing piece in Royal Flower’s record. The mare has had 36 starts for eight wins, eight placings and $174,815 in prize-money, including back-to-back thirds in the Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 2050m). "We’d really love to see her go a couple of placings better in a stakes race. That’s the aim,” Temperton added.

Ramsay and Ritchie reach milestone

Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie reached a major stable milestone at Wanganui on Saturday, training their 200th winner in the blue and white hoops of owner-breeder Sir Peter Vela when promising filly Passiflora (Farnan) led throughout to score over 1200 metres. The Matamata-based partnership has prepared 200 winners from 1427 runners, collecting 14 black-type victories along the way, including elite-level success with Guiseppina (Johar) in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m). "It’s a real buzz for us to train 200 winners for Sir Peter Vela," Ramsay said. "He and his late brother Philip have given us incredible support through our careers, and we’re just so happy to be involved in the team." The first New Zealand winner by Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Passiflora is out of Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) mare Lilikoi, whose Super Seth (Dundeel) colt will be offered by Sir Peter Vela’s Pencarrow Stud as Lot 522 at Book 1 of the NZB National Yearling Sale.

JPN: Jantar Mantar lands Mile Championship in record time

Jantar Mantar (4 c Palice Malice - India Mantuana by Wilburn) took his elite-level tally to four when he set a new course record on his way to winning Sunday’s Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kyoto. The Tomokazu Takano-trained four-year-old jumped quickly from a wide gate under Yuga Kawada before pulling away for a convincing length and three-quarter win over Gaia Force (Kitasan Black). Water Licht (Drefong) was just a nose further away in third. “I’m glad we were able to prove that the colt is a true champion,” said the winning rider. “Although we lost our recent race, it was a good prep for today and enabled the colt to run in a good rhythm with a good feeling. He responded smoothly and, in the home stretch with the sun setting behind us, I was able to check by the shadows that no one was sneaking up on us.” The Harry Eustace-trained Docklands (Massaat), sporting the silks of OTI Racing, finished ninth of the 18 runners, five lengths behind the winner. His rider Mark Zahra said post-race: “From the barrier we had to settle quite a long way back and it made it tough for us to win, but I thought he ran through the line very well. Given the circumstances, I thought the horse ran as good as he possibly could.”

International

27 for Blue Point

Kildangan Stud sire Blue Point (Shamardal) realised his 27th individual stakes winner when Qualixia (4 f ex Quariana by Lomitas) landed the Grand Prix de Fontainebleau (Listed, 2000m) at Fontainebleau on Saturday. Ridden by Malone Favriaux for Philippe Decouz, the filly launched down the outside in the testing conditions and scored by a length and three quarters over Villa Castello (Frankel) with Aglaia (Nutan) just a head away in third. Bred by Gestut Fahrhof, Qualixia is one of four winners out of Quariana, herself a sister to Group 3 winner Quilanga and a half-sister to Listed winners Quinido (Monsun) and Quixote (Pivotal). She was a €30,000 purchase at the 2022 BBAG Baden-Baden Premier Yearling Sale. Darley’s Blue Point will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at an unchanged fee of €100,000.

37 for Sea The Moon

Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars), a resident at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, scored his 37th individual stakes winner when Orion Queen (4 f ex Oriental Queen by Declaration Of War) took out Saturday’s Italian St Leger (Gr 3, 3000m) in Milan. A homebred for Chevotel De La Hauquerie, the filly defeated Ismahane (Isfahan) by three and a quarter lengths with Moon Wolf (Intello) finishing a further eight lengths away in third. Orion Queen is out of Oriental Queen (Declaration Of War), herself a daughter of Listed winner Orion Girl (Law Society), who is also the dam of stakes-placed winners Omana (Speedmaster) and Oriental Wind (Zamindar). Sea The Moon will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £20,000 (approx. AU$40,580).

Second for Space Blues

Darley’s first-season stallion Space Blues (Dubawi) sired his second individual stakes winner when the Melania Cascione-trained Drago Blues (2 c ex Simplicity by Casamento) won Saturday’s Premio Campobello (Listed , 1800m) in Milan. The colt stayed on bravely to beat Wanda (Cracksman) by a neck with a further eight lengths back to Golden Vega (Lucky Vega) in third. Drago Blues was sold to Double O Bloodstock by his breeder Plantation Stud for 50,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2023. He then fetched 45,000gns when selling to Brown Island Stables out of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year. Earlier this year, the colt was bought by Marco Bozzi Bloodstock at the Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale. Drago Blues is out of the stakes-placed winner Simplicity (Casamento), while the colt’s second dam is Sleek Gold (Dansili) and her six winners are headed by the US Grade 3 scorer Ouraika (Zelzal). Space Blues will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €15,000 (AU$26,770).

US: Nevada Beach back to winning ways

Nevada Beach (3 c Omaha Beach - Morrow Cove by Yes It's True) regained the winning thread when he took out the Native Diver Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) at Del Mar on Saturday. Lining up off the back of an unplaced effort in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f), the Bob Baffert-trained Grade 1 winner beat British Isles (Justify) by a half-length. Westwood (Authentic) finished another two and a quarter lengths away in third.

Ka Ying Rising edges closer to Hong Kong record after Jockey Club Sprint romp

Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) maintained a relentless pursuit of racing history and stretched his unbeaten sequence to 15 races with a devastating display of power and speed to land the Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Unvanquished since January last year, Ka Ying Rising obliterated his nine rivals in clocking the second-fastest time in history over 1200 metres at Sha Tin – 1m 07.33s, marginally outside his own track record of 1m 07.20s – despite being eased down over the last 100 metres by Zac Purton.

Conceding five pounds to the rest of the field, the world’s highest-rated sprinter jumped cleanly to lead from barrier ten before settling in second place behind Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner) and, such was his superiority, Purton said the tempo was still not fast enough – despite a blistering sectional of 21.93s from the 800 metres to the 400 metres.

Purton quickly put the issue beyond doubt on straightening as Ka Ying Rising surged clear inside the last 200 metres before being allowed to saunter to the line. The winning margin of two-and-three-quarter lengths flattered runner-up Fast Network (Wrote) with Helios Express (Toronado) third, a further length-and-three-quarters away.

Ka Ying Rising’s 15th consecutive win leaves him third overall for the most wins in a row by a Hong Kong, China-trained horse behind Silent Witness (El Moxie) (17) and Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) (16).

With the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin on December 14 seemingly at his mercy, the gelding continues to impress Purton with his maturity, having successfully travelled back to Sha Tin after landing The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) in Sydney on October 18.

“He just looks better all the time. He’s mentally getting better. It’s hard to say that he’s improving or that he’s going to get better, but he’s certainly enjoying what he’s doing and handling it really well,” Purton said.

“It was good to see him win like that today without having to go to the bottom of him, so it’s a nice confidence-boosting win as he comes back. I’ve never seen him look so good. We were hoping he was going to do that, and it’s good for him to back up what we were thinking.

“Mid-race, Beauty Waves was probably just half a step too slow – I know we’ve run nearly a track record time – but he [Ka Ying Rising] was on his tippy toes behind him wanting to go quicker. That’s the beauty with this horse, the faster they go, the better he is.

“I got to the stage where I had to let him roll into it because otherwise it was going to be detrimental to him.”

Winning trainer David Hayes said: “To the eye, I thought it was probably one of his best wins. That was as easy as I’ve seen him do it – maybe in this race last year, but I thought it was probably better than this one last year when he [Purton] did the kiss cam.

“Zac agreed with me. He thought he gave him probably the best feel in the last 15 [races], so that’s a great sign. He just showed us that he’s right on song. He raced at the heaviest Hong Kong weight [1,158lb] he’s ever been today, which suggests he’s getting bigger, stronger, better.

“It’s just a dream come true to have a horse like this, and I really want to thank my team that travelled him overseas and didn’t miss a beat with him and brought him back in better condition than he left.

“He’ll be set for The Everest now again and, of course, we’ve got the big international race in three weeks which is his short-term grand final, so it’s all very exciting.”

The battle for the homegrown rider’s berth in the International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley on December 10 will be settled at next Wednesday’s Happy Valley meeting after Vincent Ho and Jerry Chau both struck at Sha Tin.

Ho leads Chau with 11 wins to ten after scoring on the Chris So-trained Mabubu (Zousain) in the Class 4 BOCHK Cross-Border Services Handicap (1200m), but Chau struck back with victory on Ricky Yiu’s promising Sky Joy (Hellbent) in the Class 3 BOC Credit Card Handicap (1200m).

Hugh Bowman edged to within one victory of Luke Ferraris in the tussle for the final IJC place after partnering Francis Lui’s Do Your Part (Coats Choice) to success in the Class 4 BOC Life Handicap (1400m). Bowman trails Ferraris 14-15 with one meeting left before the final selection.

Dylan Mo continued a productive association with Lui’s Winning Wing (Preferment) in the Class 2 BOCHK “Banking TrendyToo” Handicap (2000m) while Zac Purton teamed with Mark Newnham when Four-Year-Old Classic Series prospect Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) scored a soft victory in the Class 3 BOCHK Wealth Management Handicap (1400m)

James McDonald combined with John Size to notch his first win of his short-term stint when Fit For Beauty (Vanbrugh) landed the Class 4 BOCHK SME In One Handicap (1400m) before the gun jockey posted a Group 2 double on Galaxy Patch (Wandjina) and Romantic Warrior (Acclamation).

David Eustace and Lyle Hewitson closed the meeting in style as Riding Together (Profitable) earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$299,415) for winning the Class 3 BOCHK BOC Pay+ Handicap (1400m).

Romantic Warrior dazzles with return success in Jockey Club Cup

Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) made a triumphant return to racing at Sha Tin on Sunday when he sauntered to an emphatic victory in the Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) for James McDonald and Danny Shum.

Resuming after 232 days between races after surgery to his left fore fetlock, Romantic Warrior lifted his world record earnings to HK$217.7 million (approx. AU$43.45m) as the Hong Kong International Sale graduate became the first horse to win a third Jockey Club Cup after victories in 2022 and 2024.

“He’s so special. It takes the words out of my mouth to be fair, it’s an absolute privilege to ride him and every time he goes around there’s a huge smile on the face. He’s really touching, that horse,” McDonald said.

“Him [Shum] and his team just gloat over him, he’s a special horse – one of a kind. His training performance is incredible. To have him looking how he did, feeling how he did and performing how he did was a real testament to his training ability.”

Stepping smoothly from barrier two as 1.4 favourite, Romantic Warrior settled fourth behind leading duo Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) and Sword Point (American Pharoah), while Straight Arron (Fastnet Rock) sat third. Turning for home, McDonald popped his mount the question, circling wide, before letting loose in the straight with an unmatched burst of speed.

The gelding’s winning time was 2m 03.72s, while the official margin was an eased down one and a half lengths ahead of Voyage Bubble, who held second, while Ka Ying Generation (Churchill) rolled into third place.

Shum said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my team, especially my stable assistant and his home rider. They put a lot of effort into him and, of course, my stable vet Lawrence Chan – he’s also helped him a lot.

“Before the race I talked to James and we all understood that the pace would be slow, and then we said the most important thing is to relax the horse. He had a good turn of foot, we were not worried about the pace being slow.”

Romantic Warrior will next target a record-extending fourth consecutive Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) success at the Hong Kong International Races on December 14.

“It’s not easy to take a horse 232 days back to a Group 2 over 2000 [metres]. He’s a superstar, he’s got talent and is smart,” Shum said. “He didn’t look seven years old, even when he turns eight, he will think he’s still a baby.

“I will just keep him happy; he’s fit at the moment. If you really want me to put a figure on it, I will say he was 85 per cent. After this race, he will put on another 10 or 12 pounds.

“I’d like to thank Hugh Bowman, of course, he trials the horse a lot and teaches the horse to relax. He also helps the team and the stable a lot.”

McDonald masterclass as Galaxy Patch lands Jockey Club Mile

James McDonald delivered a masterful ride aboard Galaxy Patch (Wandjina) to spring a surprise and claim the Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, upsetting odds-on favourite My Wish (Flying Artie) in the process.

It was a first victory in 13 months for Pierre Ng-trained Galaxy Patch as McDonald registered the second win of his latest short-term stint in Hong Kong.

My Wish was slow from the gates, with only Galaxy Patch emerging slower. But he quickly recovered and adopted a customary position – on pace and one off the rail heading to the bend.

The contest unfolded quickly as they entered the home straight, and a thrilling finish seemed likely with several runners manoeuvring into position to strike.

Luke Ferraris, aboard My Wish cruised into a clear run before asking the two-time Group winner to quicken at the 250-metre mark. However, the response from Mark Newnham’s five-year-old was limited, and he was soon swallowed up by McDonald, who had timed a searing run on Galaxy Patch up the inside rail to perfection.

Hollie Doyle rode the unheralded Sunlight Power (Capitalist) into second place for Ricky Yiu, while the Frankie Lor-trained Happy Together (Dragon Pulse), ridden by Alexis Badel, grabbed third, both half-a-length behind the winner. My Wish boxed on to claim fourth, a further half-length in arrears.

The brisk pace delivered the fastest 1600-metre time – 1m 32.88s – of Galaxy Patch’s career and an eighth win for the six-year-old. Ng revealed the addition of blinkers was a telling factor.

“With the gear change, with the blinkers, he finished stronger to the line, but still a little bit of improvement has to be made,” the winning trainer said.

“We waited for very long [for this win]. This preparation has gone really well. Last month’s [race] was a bit unlucky with the run – he ran sixth. And today, luckily, it opened up well for him,” he added.

Adding further merit to the win, McDonald reported Galaxy Patch overcame interference in running.

“He did really well. He got a bit of a check at the 800 [metre mark], and he regathered himself and came with a good surge,” McDonald said. “A nice confidence-boosting win heading into December and we’ll see how we go.”

The result makes the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on December 14 an intriguing affair with My Wish seeking to turn the tables and the prospect of some smart overseas challengers, such as The Lion In Winter (Sea The Stars) and Soul Rush (Rulership), adding another element.

Ng revealed that McDonald is engaged to ride Galaxy Patch in the December showpiece and said he had pursued the Kiwi to take the ride.

“We waited for long for him [McDonald] – he was busy last season with Voyage Bubble. So this season we waited for him. It was the first time he rode him in a race, he won it. We’re looking forward to the next one.”
