Apulia out to make up for lost time in Northerly Stakes

Ben Hayes believes comeback entire Apulia (Fiorente) can continue making up for lost time and prove his class beyond doubt when he lines up in Saturday’s Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot.

Half-owned by Team Hayes and his Victorian co-breeders Revelstone Stud, Apulia’s path so far has been a chequered one, explaining why the five-year-old has still only had 16 starts.

He ran a two-length second to Veight (Grunt) in the 2023 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in his three-start first preparation.

What's On

He returned in the spring to take Moonee Valley’s Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) by two lengths, and run a brave 0.1 length second in the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), when he raced midfield on the fence inside eventual winner Riff Rocket (American Pharoah), was cluttered for room early in the straight, and came on an inside run.

Apulia had a quiet third campaign in the autumn of 2024 before looking like living up to his promise last spring, with a narrow second in the MVRC VOBIS Gold Star (1500m) and a 0.56 length third in Flemington’s Cup Day Plate (Listed, 1800m).

But disaster struck, with Apulia suffering a tendon injury that might have ended his career.

After a year off and careful management, however, the entire has come back for two wins from as many starts. First-up he powered home from last of eight to go one better than last year in the VOBIS Gold Star, scoring by 0.5 lengths. He followed with a 0.3 length win in Flemington’s Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1600m) on November 6.

I think he’ll have room on Saturday, and we just need a bit of luck in running, and to follow the right horses

Trainer

Those efforts have elevated him to second among the offspring of 2013 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Fiorente (Monsun), who died in 2023.

Admittedly, it’s not a hot field, with 11 stakes winners headed by the Group 2-winning Lunar Flare, but in any case, Hayes feels Apulia has an undeniable chance to shoot to the top of that list as he tackles weight-for-age for the first time in the Northerly, and steps up to a trip his co-trainer feels he’ll relish.

“We couldn’t be happier with him,” Hayes told ANZ News.

“He arrived over there more than two weeks ago and settled in really well. He had a tick-over barrier trial last week and he’s really come through it nicely. He did his final piece of work on Tuesday, and all reports are he went great.

“He’ll be genuine, and he’ll love the 1800 metres.”

The only slight drawback is Apulia and Michael Dee will jump from gate 13 of 16 if the emergency comes out. Then again, that could work in his favour.

“He can settle in a midfield-to-back position. Without having checked the speed map yet, I imagine we’ll look to find a bum and be three-wide with cover,” Hayes said.

“But he’s a horse we find is better with a bit of room. When he was a colt, he used to have a bit of a think. If you look at his Derby run, if he gets to the outside he probably gets his nose down over Riff Rocket.

“I think he’ll have room on Saturday, and we just need a bit of luck in running, and to follow the right horses.”

Hayes, who trains with brothers JD and Will, said Apulia’s serious tendon injury had created “the potential for not running again”.

“But we did the right rehab and followed the process and he’s got back to the track, so we can not complain,” he said.

At least Apulia’s time off has afforded him the dual attributes of being mature yet lightly raced.

“He used to race in blinkers because he used to think a lot,” Hayes said. “But since he’s come back, he’s a lot more genuine, and is enjoying his racing. We haven’t had to put the blinkers back on him - he’s just been racing so well.

“He’s ended up being a very lightly raced five-year-old entire, and he’s also had that natural maturity.”

Hayes paid tribute to Revelstone’s Garrett family for their patience, “which is now paying off”.

Apulia is the first foal out of their mare Giannarelli (High Chaparral), who’s also supplied Team Hayes with four-year-old mare Eyes Wide Shut (Pride Of Dubai), a bush maiden winner so far, and the yet-to-race filly Aradeo (Nicconi).

The eldest Hayes brother believes Apulia will be suited by WFA, adding “he’s got a high rating of 106 now, so he’s got to run in weight-for-age anyway”.

And while he has an appropriate level of respect for unbeaten Perth three-year-old King Of Light (Earthlight) - the $2.50 favourite who Perth’s leading jockey Willie Pike has chosen to ride - he feels Apulia, at $21, has a definite chance to become the first stallion to win the Northerly since Stratum Star (Stratum) in 2016.

It would also be the first victory in the event for Lindsay Park since Niconero (Danzero) won it for the Hayes brothers’ father David in 2006 and 2008.

“You always respect young horses with light weights,” Hayes said of King Of Light, who won the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) last start, and has 52 kilograms and barrier eight.

“He was impressive with his Guineas win, definitely. And the top jockey over there has decided to ride him, so you definitely respect the horse.

“But I think Apulia is a genuine top three or four chance, and I’ll be very happy if he wins, though it’s hard to be confident in a Group 1.”

Hayes said depending on Saturday’s outcome, Apulia might stay in the west for the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) on New Year’s Day, before readying for the autumn.

Magic Millions release Tasmanian Yearling Sale catalogue

Tasmanian Yearling Sale (Credit: Magic Millions)

Magic Millions has released the catalogue for its 2026 Tasmanian Yearling Sale. The catalogue features 125 lots of the finest yearlings from the Apple Isle to sell from 11am on Monday, February 23 at Quercus Park on the outskirts of Launceston. “I have enjoyed working with the breeders in Tasmania who have really got behind the sale and supported it like never before,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said. "We have a great line up of yearlings – a number of significant lots by high class stallions – buyers will be impressed. The sale each and every year churns out a number of black type performers both across Tasmania and the mainland – recently the sale has done a remarkable job with a number of good winners in Hong Kong led by Bundle Award." A former famous graduate of the sale was $4 million plus earner, the now Japanese-based mare Mystic Journey (Needs Further). The 2026 catalogue includes a three-quarter-sister to the superstar in the Armidale Stud draft. The build up to the sale will be complemented by a thrilling twilight Magic Millions Tasmanian Raceday on February 6 – which this year will be held for the first time at Hobart’s Elwick Racecourse. The card, which also includes the Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m), will feature the running of the $85,000 Magic Millions Tasmanian 2YO Classic (1200m) (plus $10,000 Racing Women’s Bonus) and the $75,000 Magic Millions Tasmanian 3YO & 4YO Classic (1400m). Berry aboard Caballus in George Moore

Three-time stakes winner Caballus (I Am Invincible) could be headed to next month's Magic Millions meeting should he perform well in Saturday's George Moore Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Doomben. The Bjorn Baker-trained five-year-old will be reunited with jockey Tommy Berry this weekend, who rode him to a success in the Rising Fast Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) two starts back at Flemington. "The team is very happy with him at home, and I was rapt with him on Derby Day," Berry said. "He is the quality horse in the race, but I'm fully aware of what Hidden Wealth can do after winning the QTIS Magic Millions race on him last year. I've won three out of five rides on him, so I know how good he is, and he's drawn the plum gate in one. We've got to overcome a tricky alley but he's a class horse and hopefully class can overcome that." Berry will also ride the Chris Waller-trained Snitska (Snitzel), a $620,000 Magic Millions yearling out of two-time Group winner Miss Siska (So You Think) who will run in the Phelan Ready (1110m). "He looks ready-made when it comes to a two-year-old," Berry said. "He has a lovely cruising speed, and I know the team has a good opinion of him."

Tavs out to do the business at Doomben

In-form sprinter Tavs (Dundeel) will have his toughest task to date when he lines up in this weekend's George Moore Stakes at Doomben. The Mark Currie-trained gelding has landed both the Weetwood Quality (Listed, 1200m) and Tattersalls Members Cup (Listed, 1400m) on his last two outings, and has the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) as a potential long-term goal via The Buffering (1400m). “His main aim is The Buffering and if he can win that he’ll win a wildcard into the Magic Millions Cup,” Currie told Racing Queensland. Currie won The Buffering with his best horse Soxagon (Rocker) in 2021 before that horse then ran a narrow second behind Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock) in the Magic Millions Cup. “Tavs is very good, but he’s got a bit to go yet to be as good as Soxagon who has been the best horse I’ve trained so far,” Currie said. "He had a let up after his Eagle Farm win and had about ten days out in the paddock. He’s had a trial and is coming along well so he should be competitive.”

Promises Kept chases Ballarat Cup

The Michael Hickmott-trained Promises Kept (Cluster) will be bidding to break his stakes duck when he lines up in Saturday's Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m). Previously in the care of Ciaron Maher, for whom he scored three wins from 24 starts, the six-year-old gelding moved to Hickmott before starting his current campaign. He ran sixth first-up in the Murray Bridge Cup (Listed, 1600m) in October before a fifth behind Air Assault (Justify), who reopposes on Saturday, in the John Letts Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Morphettville on November 4. "He was always going to need the run first-up," Hickmott said. "I thought his first-up run was a pass mark then his next run was clearly dominated by on-pacers. His sectionals, right up until the 200-metre mark, were everything as good as anything in the race, but he flattened out in the last furlong. Up to the 2000 metres suits better and we're looking at running him in this and then back-up into the Pakenham Cup with him. He's a lovely old horse that is in the zone, he's sound, moving good, he looks fantastic and his work has been good, but it is a very good race on Saturday."

Saint George bidding for first Australian win

European import Saint George (Roaring Lion) could break his Australian maiden this weekend when the six-year-old gelding lines up in Saturday's Ballarat Cup. The son of Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) has failed to score in seven starts since moving from the UK, but has run second in both the Seymour Cup (Listed, 1600m) and Ichiban Plate (Listed, 1800m) on his last two outings. "He just had a fungal issue that was ongoing," Maher's assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told Racing.com of Saint George's disappointing opening campaign. "Our farrier John [Bunting] did a lot of work with him. Since being gelded and then living down at Fingal this preparation, it's really helped, just that alternative living, we've worked away at a different diet and a few different elements, so fingers crossed, it seems to be proving the difference at the moment." Saint George will be joined by stablemate Detonator Jack (Jakkalberry) in this weekend's Listed contest. "He's on the back-up," Turnbull said of Detonator Jack. "Two starts ago, he was almost back to his best and then last start, just with the bias, he didn't get a proper crack at them. He's really come through the run as good as you could hope and we thought Ballarat, Soft track, we will give him his chance to back up."

No Ballarat Cup for Darknconfidential

Having had Darknconfidential (Cosmic Force) nominated for Saturday's Ballarat Cup, Morphettville-based trainer Stuart Gower has decided to run the four-year-old gelding in the easier option of the Benchmark 84 Hertz Handicap (2000m) on the same card. The son of Cosmic Force (Deep Field) has scored three wins from his last five starts, and was also runner-up in a Benchmark 84 (2025m) last time out. "He's a nice horse that is only just starting to furnish into himself and I still reckon he's another six months away," Gower said. "Hopefully we can be back next year for the Cup, but this year, we'll run in the easier race." As well as the 2026 Ballarat Cup, Gower also has his eyes on future cups with his five-time winner. "A fortnight ago, when he went to Cranbourne, that was the first time he had travelled," Gower said. "He actually came through that really well and it has made him wake up a bit. The tighter track didn't really suit him, he's more of a horse that likes big, roomy tracks, so Ballarat should suit him better and he definitely needs a dry track too. He'll run on Saturday and then have a few weeks off and then we'll set him back for the autumn." The local Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) could be a cup on the agenda for Darknconfidential. "He's pretty relaxed, and sticks on well, but whether he would get the two miles, I don't know," Gower said. "We'll get through Saturday first and a worst-case scenario there might end up being some nice country cups for him."

Archibald duo on trial for Magic Millions Cup

West Of Africa (Credit: Race Images)

The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained pair West Of Africa (Not A Single Doubt) and Mickey's Medal (Brave Smash) will be on trial for next month's Magic Millions meeting when they line up in Sunday's TAB Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill. West Of Africa landed this year's Magic Millions Cup and Rob Archibald is keen for the six-year-old gelding to head back to defend that crown. "He was really good that day. He's going well and hopefully we can get him there again," Archibald said. "We have given him a nice break to prepare him for this. His trials have been good, and he seems really well, but it is just a starting point on Sunday, and he'll improve a lot." Meanwhile, five-time winner Mickey's Medal ran second on his first-up outing at Canterbury over 1400 metres and is also being targeted at the Magic Millions Cup. "He was beaten by Kintyre, who was a bit deeper into his preparation," Archibald said. "He will improve again into this, and he is also on a Magic Millions path if we can get him there."

Rosehill for Minvervini’s Hanau

Newcastle-based trainer Mark Minervini is hoping that Hanau (Snitzel) can be the latest tried horse purchase success story as the five-year-old gelding reappears in Sunday's Catanach's Jewellers Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill. Minervini, who picked up Hosier (Camelot) half-way through his racing career before preparing him to win the 2023 Premier's Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill, secured Hanau for $100,000 in conjunction with DF Bloodstock during the Inglis July (Early) Online Sale this year out of Godolphin. "We try to have a mixture of yearlings and tried horses. We would probably buy one [tried horse] a month, ten or twelve a year," Minervini said. "If you buy a yearling for the same amount of money, you can wait two years, and they may not measure up. This way, you are almost certain that what their form is will be what you're going to get, and there is no waiting. The best result I've had is Hosier and we paid $100,000 for him and he won a Group 3 race that same prep. For a little stable like us, if we can pick up a city horse for around that money, it's gold." The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) has taken in two trials prior to Sunday's contest, winning the most recent one over 1000 metres at Goulburn. "His second trial was pretty solid, and he will go there and be competitive," he said. "If there is good speed on, it will suit him even better."

Half-brother to La Dorada makes winning debut

The Mark Walker-trained Golden Pulse (Tivaci), a half-brother to Group 1 winner La Dorada (Super Seth), made a winning debut at Geelong on Thursday when landing an 1147-metre two-year-old maiden. Sent off the outsider of four at $6.50, the Yulong-owned son of Tivaci (High Chaparral) scored by a comfortable two lengths over Eternal Joy (I Am Immortal) in the hands of Beau Mertens. "He's always sort of been asked a bit in his jump-outs and just had a think about it," assistant trainer Ben Gleeson told Racing.com. "He is a colt; he was having a real think about the fillies out the back and in the parade ring, which probably put a fair few people off. Beau just gave him a really nice educational [run] in behind the speed. One of the horses had a run and Hayes' are always well-drilled, so for him to put them away, it's promising. Thrilled to get another winner for Yulong, that's our second runner for them for a second winner. He's got a good brain in terms of out on the track, it's just whether he can keep it together off the track. But I'm sure that [win] is going to really help him grow up and furnish." Consigned by Waikato Stud, Golden Pulse was purchased by Yulong for $160,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Geelong abandoned after two races

Thursday's meeting at Geelong was abandoned after two races due to ongoing strong winds in the area. The wind was flagged as a concern early in the day and an initial thirty-minute delay was put in place to let it pass. Horses and riders made their way behind the barriers for race three at the rescheduled start time of 3pm, but jockeys were unsatisfied and horses were brought back to the mounting yard. A further delay was called, with the meeting officially abandoned at 3:28pm as the wind persisted.

Vale Bill Gibbins

Racing Victoria (RV) has confirmed the passing of Bill Gibbins, the founder of the modern Jericho Cup (4600m), terming his passion for charity, history and horse racing as legendary. Gibbins not only revived the concept of World War I's Jericho Cup in 2018, having also funded the prize-money for the race and for the trainer's bonus for the first four editions of the longest flat thoroughbred race in Australia at 4600 metres. "It is with great sadness that Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria acknowledge the passing of philanthropist and highly respected contributor to the Victorian racing industry Bill Gibbins following a long battle with illness," an RV statement read. Gibbins' list of charitable contributions also includes organisations like Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia and Wheelchairs for Kids. He was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours in June 2021 for significant service to horse racing and to people with disability, as well as his philanthropist generosity. Gibbins and his wife Lolanda are both life members of the Warrnambool Racing Club and Bill was inducted into the WRC's Hall of Fame in 2024. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Bill Gibbins' family and friends on behalf of everyone at Racing Victoria and the Victorian racing industry," RV chief executive Aaron Morrison said. “Universally loved and highly respected, Bill's contribution to both racing and the community cannot be understated. Thanks to Bill's vision and passion, we now run Australia's longest flat race, the Jericho Cup, a recognised and much-anticipated event on the annual racing calendar. Bill contributed over $1 million of his own money to fund the first four Jericho Cups because that was exactly the type of person he was - he stood up for what he believed in. He was passionate about Australia and its heritage and recognised the importance of remembering our servicemen and women, something that I'd like to personally acknowledge and respect."

Waitak ticks all boxes ahead of Mufhasa Classic

Waitak (Credit: Race Images)

Waitak (Proisir) will bid for a fourth Group 1 victory when he lines up at Trentham on Saturday, with Wexford Stables confident the gelding is right where he needs to be ahead of the Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m). The son of Proisir (Choisir) has already secured elite-level wins over 1200, 1600 and 2040 metres, proving effective on good, soft and heavy ground. Co-trainer Andrew Scott said Waitak’s adaptability has been one of his defining strengths. “He’s been an amazing horse for us and goes well on all kinds of going, he’s quite versatile and definitely enjoys getting his toe in the ground,” Scott said. “He’s going as well as he can and we do have a lot of respect for the others in the field, it’s a really good Group 1.” Waitak rounded out his spring with victories in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) before enjoying a short break. “The team have been really pleased with him…he had that trial last week and we were pleased with him under a beautiful rein and Craig [Grylls] was really happy with him,” Scott said. “He had a nice hit-out on Tuesday morning and stormed up the straight, so we are hopeful of getting a good result.” Travelling south with Waitak is his younger brother Crackercol, who contests the Rothley Handicap (2100m). “His recent racing has been very solid…his fitness and confidence levels are high, so we thought we would take the opportunity to get him over ground,” Scott said.

Ears Back returns to happy hunting ground

Canterbury mare Ears Back (Jakkalberry) will attempt to add to her North Island stakes haul when she lines up for her first Group 1 assignment in Saturday’s Mufhasa Classic at Trentham. The seven-year-old has produced her best form away from home this year, claiming the AGC Training Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Wanganui in May before securing the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham in September. Two unplaced runs back in the south followed, but trainer Russell Blackadder said her last-start failure in the TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) came with valid excuses. “Her last race she wasn’t very well and heavily in season,” Blackadder said. A sharp 1200-metre trial win at Ashburton last week confirmed she was ready for another northern venture. “She had a very good trial…I had to give her that trial, and with Our Echo in it, it gave me a good gauge of where we were at with her,” he said.
Ears Back is now stabled at Suzy Gordon’s Foxton base, settling in comfortably ahead of her Group 1 test. “She is at Suzy Gordon’s at the moment and she is very relaxed up there,” Blackadder said. “As long as they are happy and eating up you can’t ask for anymore. It’s a big ask for her obviously, but she is working well and galloped well on Tuesday.” While realistic about the mare’s task in a strong field, Blackadder hopes Saturday’s run will propel her toward the Thorndon Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) next month. “We are looking at the Thorndon Mile,” he said. “There is not much down here for her now because weight will get her. We have got to hope she goes well on Saturday.”

A month of milestones for Moodley

Apprentice jockey Triston Moodley has turned a challenging year into a breakthrough one, reaching his 100th career win just months after a serious head injury sidelined him for three months. The 24-year-old was injured in a fall at the Waipa trials in July, leaving him bed-ridden for weeks. But since returning to race riding, he has surged back to form. His month-long purple patch includes a victory aboard Force Of Nature (Savabeel) in the Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m) and his milestone 100th win on Lucky Ferrando (Ferrando) at Cromwell last Friday. “To get the 100 wins was a peach of a moment,” Moodley said. “Not many apprentices are able to do it. It was tough over that injury period, but I am glad to be back now. My injury hasn’t played up at all since I have come back.” The past month has also brought major change off the track, with Moodley relocating from Byerley Park to Christchurch, where he is now on loan to the New Zealand Equine Academy. “I can get quite a lot of rides here… It is going great at the moment, I am quite busy,” he said. “I will end up basing myself down here, but I will do a lot of travelling up north and to the Central Districts. My main goal is to buy a house down here.” This weekend he returns to Auckland with a strong book at Pukekohe, headlined by Twain (Per Incanto) in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Landlock (Merchant Navy) in the Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). “I am looking forward to getting back on Twain. Hopefully I can keep winning on him,” he said. “Landlock has drawn three and will probably get a soft run. He will go very close.” Moodley has six rides at Riccarton on Friday and rates Lady Georgiana (Eminent) as his best. “I’ve been riding her in trackwork…I think she will be right there in the finish,” he said.

HK: Ka Ying Rising gallop pleases Hayes ahead of HKIR

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) has impressed trainer David Hayes with a superb final fast turf gallop ahead of the Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) on December 14, as a host of local contenders stepped up preparations in barrier trials at Sha Tin on Thursday. The five-time Group 1 winner will chase history in the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), where he will attempt to equal Golden Sixty’s (Medaglia D'Oro) 16-win streak – a feat surpassed only by Silent Witness (El Moxie) (17) among Hong Kong-trained horses. Hayes said The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) hero could not be better placed after surging home in 21.6 seconds for his final 400 metres under Zac Purton in a sparkling Wednesday gallop. “I thought it was as good as you could ask the horse to work,” Hayes said. “Zac [Purton] quickened on him, and he said he thought that he was at his top and he gave him a little dig and he extended again. He just cantered around on the turf track and quickened the last 400 metres and ran home in 21.6. I think he would have broken 11 seconds for the last 200 without trying. Zac thought it was the best he’s felt in work, so he just keeps on improving.” OTI Racing’s UK raider Docklands (Massaat) completed light work ahead of the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), one of four elite features on a blockbuster HKIR programme.

HK: Khaadem’s global revival continues with Hong Kong Sprint bid

No nine-year-old has ever claimed the Hong Kong Sprint, but UK veteran Khaadem (Dark Angel) will attempt to do just that when he lines up at Sha Tin on December 14. The Jim and Fitri Hay-owned gelding has long defied convention, having stunned racegoers at Royal Ascot in 2023 with an 80/1 victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), becoming the feature’s oldest winner at eight. While his form briefly dipped in the UK this year, his two most recent runs in the US include victory in the Woodford Stakes (Gr 2, 5.5f) at Keeneland and a superb last-start third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f). His trainer Charlie Hills said Hong Kong has always been the target following the Breeders’ Cup. “He’s been a brilliant horse for us,” Hills said. “I think he’s very nearly at the top of his game. He’s going to be ten next month, and nothing lasts forever, but he’s been running some great races – he won a Group 2 two starts ago and was third at the Breeders’ Cup. It was a really good run at Del Mar. He’s been in America since the Breeders’ Cup and I think that will have been easier on him than coming home in between.” Khaadem’s explosive last-to-first pattern is expected to suit Sha Tin, and while blinkers contributed to his Breeders’ Cup resurgence, Hills has yet to confirm whether they will be reapplied. Oisin Murphy will take the ride. On the challenge of facing Ka Ying Rising, Hills said: “It wouldn’t be the end of the world finishing second to him. In these sprints anything can happen.”

HK: Barzalona bids to cap dream year by defending IJC title

Mickael Barzalona arrives in Hong Kong next week in the form of his life and ready to defend his International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) title after a season he described as “magical.” Fresh from a remarkable 2025 in which he claimed his first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 1m 4f), King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) along with additional top-level wins at the Breeders’ Cup and in the British Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f), the French star still treasures last year’s IJC triumph at Happy Valley. “It’s a wonderful memory,” Barzalona said. “It’s always a great line-up of jockeys who are there because they have enjoyed great success during their domestic seasons and internationally. So it’s a wonderful way to round off the year, and I’ve always been very excited to take part.” His 2024 victory came in dramatic style: a last-stride surge aboard 37/1 outsider Sergeant Pepper (I Am Invincible) to edge out William Buick, followed by a dominant ride in the final leg aboard Aurora Lady (Star Witness) for Pierre Ng, sealing the title. Barzalona now looks to cap his glittering year when the stars gather at Happy Valley on Wednesday, December 10. “Winning once gives you a taste for it,” he said. “If anything, this year’s line-up is even stronger. It's incredible The Hong Kong Jockey Club brings so many of the world’s best together for one night.”

Countless headline acts are scheduled to take their place at next year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, with Inglis revealing a small selection of the pedigrees set to be featured at the Sydney auction on Friday.

While the Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt out of Winx (Street Cry) will undoubtedly draw extraordinary attention, he is one of many confirmed stand-out entries.

Among the highlights are siblings to a remarkable array of elite performers, including brothers to Group 1 winners Switzerland (Snitzel), Zougotcha (Zoustar), Celestial Legend (Dundeel), Captivant (Capitalist) and Hitotsu (Maurice), sisters to Champion two-year-olds Fireburn (Rebel Dane) and Estijaab (Snitzel) and Group 1-winning sire Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), half-sisters to The Everest (1200m) (now a Group 1) winner Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) and Group 1 winners Sunshine In Paris (Invader) and Private Eye (Al Maher), and half-brothers to Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Medaglia D'Oro) and Group 1 winner Coolangatta (Written Tycoon).

Several entries are three-quarter relations to Group 1 winners, including three-quarter brothers to dual Group 1 winner Magic Time (Hellbent) and Hong Kong star Beauty Eternal (Starspangledbanner).

Foals out of many of the southern hemisphere’s most decorated racemares will also go through the ring, among them daughters of Melody Belle (Commands), Icebath (Sacred Falls), Sunlight (Zoustar), Shoals (Fastnet Rock), Sierra Sue (Darci Brahma), Forbidden Love (All Too Hard), Viddora (I Am Invincible), Isotope (Deep Field) and a long list of other Group 1-winning or stakes-performed mares.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said the level of support from breeders across Australia and New Zealand had been “overwhelming,” noting that Easter 2026 has been oversubscribed since entries closed.

“It eventuated that we had a very nice group of horses for the sale in 2025, but the success of that sale and positive market sentiment around Inglis in general has meant the support of Easter 2026 has been incredible,” Hutch said.

“The sale has been ‘full’ since entries closed in September and the quality from every perspective – stallion power, female families, vendor profile et cetera – is extraordinarily strong.

“There are over 75 yearlings entered at the moment which are siblings to or progeny of Group 1 winners, which gives some illustration of the strength of the line-up – it’s staggering.

“It’s going to be a bigger catalogue than in 2025, which means more opportunities for buyers, which is exciting.

“The value on offer at a sale like this is often underestimated and it’s worth bearing in mind that, despite the strength of the sale in 2025, there were 104 yearlings that could have been bought for $200,000 or less.

“Inglis Easter is the best yearling sale in the southern hemisphere by just about every credible metric.

“You are more likely to find a Group 1 winner at Easter, a high-class 2YO at Easter, it’s got a proven track record as ‘The Best Of The Best’ and the 2026 renewal is going to be very much in keeping with that tradition.”

The full catalogue for the 2026 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale will be finalised and released in mid-January ahead of the Riverside Stables auction on March 29-30.

Eternal Warrior (AUS)

2 c Extreme Warrior - Devout Hero by No Nay Never

Juvenile colt Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior) kicked off his career in perfect fashion on Saturday when he made a winning debut in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Eternal Warrior had shown talent in two trial seconds to warrant respect, and the Lloyd Kennewell-trained colt produced a determined late surge under Zac Spain to nose out Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler) in the final stride, while Alibaba (Alabama Express) found some traffic but hit the line well, finishing 1.3 lengths behind the pair in third.

Dam: Devout Hero

Dam's Sire: No Nay Never

Breeder: China Horse Club Racing Pty Ltd

Eternal Warrior’s 0.1-length victory marked the second individual winner and first stakes winner for Rosemont Stud’s freshman Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice) from just four runners to hit the track.

With Lloyd Kennewell in Tokyo for Sunday’s Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), it was father Gary who saddled the colt and spoke on course.

“He’s probably doing some shopping and watching the race, it’s fantastic” he said. “He gave a good kick and Zac just rode him a treat. He put him into the race and he finished off.”

Eternal Warrior was not on his best behaviour pre-race and was one of the last to jump, but quickly recovered and travelled strongly before powering late.

Spain said the colt showed raw ability under pressure. “I liked his turn of foot today, I thought he trialled up really well, but you have to show that race day under race day pressure,” the winning rider said.

“I didn't think I was going to get past Lachie [Neindorf, on Stretan Ruler]…but the more I got stuck into my bloke, the more he picked up.”

Gary Kennewell confirmed Eternal Warrior could attempt a tilt at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) firmly on the table.

“I know he [Lloyd] does like having a runner up there, so it would be nice,” he said. “He should get the 1200 metres, the way he got home. He was tough at the line.”

An $80,000 Magic Millions Adelaide yearling purchase for Kennewell Racing and Blueblood Thoroughbreds, Eternal Warrior is the first runner and first stakes winner out of No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) mare Devout Hero, herself a half-sister to stakes placegetters Papillon (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Lady Sharapova (Fastnet Rock) from the famed family of four-time Group 1 scorer Alinghi (Encosta De Lago).

Extreme Warrior is standing at Rosemont Stud for a fee of $13,200 (inc GST), down from $16,500 last year.
