A brother to elite winner Funstar (Adelaide), a half-brother to dual Group 1 hero Streets Of Avalon (Magnus), and foals out of top-tier winners Nettoyer (Sebring), Snitzerland (Snitzel) and Hasahalo (Savabeel) will be among the highlights of next year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Inglis has assembled a catalogue of 806 yearlings including 579 in Book One for the Melbourne auction, to be held from March 1-3 - a similar size to this year’s edition which had 803 lots listed and 565 in Book One.

A total of 64 vendors will be selling stock by 110 individual stallions, including Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) with nine lots, I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) (seven), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) (10) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia) (16).

What's On

The sale - which has hatched the past three Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) winners sold at auction in Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai), Think About It (So You Think) and Nature Strip (Nicconi) - also has strong representation from exciting next-wave sires such as Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) (10 lots), Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) (17), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) (11), Harry Angel (Dark Angel) (11) and Super Seth (Dundeel) (two).

First-season stallions on show will include Jacquinot (Rubick) (19 lots), Anamoe (Street Boss) (11), Artorius (Flying Artie) (eight), Hitotsu (Maurice) (seven), Sejardan (Sebring) (nine) and Paulele (Dawn Approach) (five).

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch says it’s the finest selection he’s seen for the sale in his time with the company.

“It’s the best Premier catalogue we’ve had while I’ve been at Inglis,” Hutch told ANZ News. “We’re really, really pleased with it.

“We are beneficiaries of the fact the sale went really well earlier this year in a testing sales environment. It was the first Australasian sale of the year that posted a gain year-on-year, and I think that’s given people some more confidence around the sale.

“That’s backed up by the support the sale has received this year.

“It’s a sale that local Victorian support is hugely important to. That forms the cornerstone of the sale, but then the quality is supplemented by really good interstate representation this year.

“Coolmore have a big draft. Newgate are back for the second consecutive year. And then you have the likes of Arrowfield who are selling through Glen Lee Thoroughbreds, plus Milburn Creek and Newhaven.

“Widden are considered a Victorian farm for the purposes of this sale, but they have plenty of New South Wales-based yearlings going also. Segenhoe always sell at this sale and always sell well. They sold a Group 1 winner here in 2023 in Reserve Bank.

“There’s some really good stuff in there so we’re really pleased with how it’s come together.”

Among the highlights is Twin Hills Stud’s Lot 369, a colt by Adelaide (Galileo) who’s a full-brother to Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Funstar, and a half to another Group 1 winner in Youngstar (High Chaparral).

A colt by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) who’s a half-brother to dual elite victor Streets Of Avalon (Magnus) is offered as Lot 142 from Supreme Thoroughbreds.

Lot 229 from Newgate Farm is one of two yearlings by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) at the sale, a colt second foal of dual Group 1 winner Nettoyer.

And Lot 350 is a Vinery Stud filly by Zoustar out of Snitzerland, the six-time black type winner including of the Lighting Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), who’s thrown two stakes victors from five foals to race.

The Chase offers Lot 90, an I Am Invincible colt who’s the second foal of New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hasahalo.

A filly foal by Starspangledbanner (Choisir) out of the Group 1-winning Amanpour (Northern Meteor) is offered by Penfold Thoroughbreds as Lot 467.

Glenn Lee has a colt from the first crop of dual Derby winner Hitotsu out of quadruple stakes winner and Group 1 runner-up Angel Of Mercy (Hussonet), as Lot 470.

Crossley Thoroughbreds offers Lot 578, a Pinatubo (Shamardal) colt out of Curtana (Exceed And Excel), the dual black type victor who ran second in a Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Lot 19 is a colt by sire of the moment Ghaiyyath in the draft of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds who’s a half-brother to VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Extra Brut (Domesday).

Victoria’s Rosemont Stud has Lot 153, a colt by Too Darn Hot who’s the first foal of Canadian Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed La Dragontea (Lope De Vega), a mare who also won an Adelaide Listed.

And Lot 321 is a filly by Harry Angel out of Set To Skelter (Reset), a Melbourne city winner who’s left three stakes winners from six foals to race including MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) queen Another Prophet (Brazen Beau).

Super sire Frankel (Galileo) is represented by three yearlings including Lot 279, Mill Park Stud’s filly first foal of Group 2 winner Quantum Mechanic (Deep Field).

Newgate also offers a colt by Frankel as Lot 33, out of US Listed-winning sprinter Emro (Point Of Entry), while Coolmore has Frankel’s grey filly out of Wind Chimes (Mastercraftsman), the equal leading 3YO Filly on the 2018 WTR mile standings.

Sub-fertile sensation Extreme Choice has nine yearlings at the sale including Lot 256 from his home farm Newgate, a filly fourth foal of triple stakes winner Pecans (Skilled).

This year, Inglis Premier sold 399 Book One lots at an 81 percent clearance rate, with an average of $135,000 and a median of $100,000, with two lots sharing top billing at a neat $1 million.

That compared favourably to 2024’s results of 413 lots sold (82 per cent) with an average of $128,000, a median of $90,000 and a top lot of $925,000.

The stronger 2025 statistics also came as something of a surprise given slightly soft results elsewhere earlier in the year - and were a bellwether for stronger Inglis sales ahead.

“It’s very hard to pinpoint why a sale went so well,” Hutch said.

“It was fairly consistent with our whole sale season in that we got good reward for effort. We target a broad cross section of buyers for every sale but we felt it was particularly effective for Premier last year.

“There was a good feel about the complex. People were pleased with the horses they saw and it just worked out well.

“But 2026 is certainly a stronger catalogue on paper and in terms of our inspections than 12 months ago.”

Hutch said that might bring a level of expectation going into 2026 that wasn’t there ahead of the 2025 sale, “which could be a challenge to manage”.

“But,” he added, “when you can consolidate a catalogue around the strength of vendors such as Yulong, who’ve got big draft in the sale - they invest a huge amount of money in quality bloodstock. That’s had the effect of drawing significant interest to a sale like Premier. They seem pretty determined to support the sale with quality.

“Then you factor in other Victorian farms such as Gilgai. Ric Jamieson is an incredible breeder who’ll be selling exclusively at the sale in 2026.

“Rosemont sold a million dollar yearling at the sale last year, and they’re supporting the sale again.

“I think these sorts of things get people engaged with the sale.”

Yulong is by far the most represented vendor at the sale, with 85 lots supporting their sires including Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice), Diatonic (Lord Kanaloa), Grunt (O’Reilly), Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) and Written Tycoon.

Zhang Yuesheng’s empire also has, as Lot 346, a filly by Kingman (Invincible Spirit) out of an unraced half-sister, from the famed Fall Aspen family, to Group 1 winner and current-day sire King Colorado (Kingman). Yulong also has two colts out of well-related Irish mares who are among the four yearlings at the sale by outstanding French sire Siyouni (Pivotal).

Widden Stud has 50 yearlings entered, Longwood Thoroughbred Farm 44, Rosemont and Blue Gum Farm 34 apiece, Glen Lee 29, Stonehouse Thoroughbreds 26, Crossley Thoroughbreds 23, Twin Hills 21, Gilgai and Newgate 19 each and Coolmore 17.

Inglis data shows that since 2018, a total of 34 Group 1-winning graduates have emerged through Premier, including 16 that could have been bought for $100,000 or less including Benedetta (Hellbent), Griff (Trapeze Artist), Mariamia (Toronado), Gytrash (Lope De Vega) and Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega).

Premier has also hatched 33 graduates who’ve earned $1 million or more in Australia, as well as the winners of 314 individual Australian stakes races, also since 2018.

The sale has also provided the winners of 195 individual races in Hong Kong in that time, including Victor The Winner (Toronado), Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook), Invincible Sage (Thronum), and Senor Toba (Toronado).

Inglis’s Victorian bloodstock manager James Price was delighted with how the 2026 catalogue had come together.

“I feel the standard of yearlings catalogued for the sale for 2026 is higher than at any time I can remember and I know my colleagues feel the sale,’’ Price said in an Inglis statement

“The quality of the pedigrees, in terms of both stallion power and female families, reads exceptionally well. Our expectation was that the strength of the sale in 2025 – noting it was the first Southern Hemisphere sale of 2025 to post improved metrics year on year – would help us to consolidate a stronger catalogue in 2026 and we are confident that is the case.

“Historically the Premier Sale has been a hugely significant producer of superstars with graduates including Black Caviar, Starspangledbanner, Nature Strip, Bella Nipotina, Ole Kirk, Sacred Kingdom, Written By, Booker, September Run, Masked Crusader et cetera, and I’m confident the 2026 catalogue will produce any number of stars as well.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Taken to tackle The Supanova

In-form four-year-old Taken (Ardrossan) will line up in Saturday's The Supanova (1400m) at Pakenham as he bids to land a big payday for connections. Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, the son of Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice) has won his last five starts but will be taking on the likes of Group 1 winners Here To Shock (Shocking) and Private Eye (Al Maher) in this weekend's 1400-metre contest. "It will be hard to beat Here To Shock and Private Eye at the weight scale, but we've got a progressive horse, and I know for one thing, he is a winner," Kent Jnr said. "He's yet to miss a place in ten starts, five wins and five placings, so he doesn't like losing." Taken was last seen landing a Benchmark 84 (1400m) at Caulfield on November 15 and takes his place in the slot of part-owner Carl Holt. “He has won his last five, so he had earned his shot and we're four weeks from his win at Caulfield,” said Kent Jnr. “He's nice and fresh to stay at the 1400 [metres] and Pakenham is a beautiful track for him. He was a relatively inexperienced find in New Zealand and I don't know where his ceiling is. His wins at Flemington in the winter were quite impressive, but they were in moderate class and the fact that he came back and won first-up in open class suggests he might have gone to the next level."

Holymanz and Precious Charm dead-heat for Werribee Cup

In a thrilling finish to Sunday's Werribee Cup (1600m), the Ciaron Maher-trained Holymanz (Almanzor) and the Symon Wilde-trained Precious Charm (Per Incanto) dead-heated in the $150,000 feature. Ridden by Ben Allen, Holymanz was sent out the $3.90 favourite and Precious Charm an $11 chance under Harry Coffey. The pair finished well inside the closing stages to hit the line together and, after a photo was called, the judge could not split the duo as they finished 0.8 lengths clear of the third-placed Indispensable (Akeed Mofeed). “Watching the vision in the room there, it looked like she’d got rolled,” Wilde’s stable representative Ben Casanelia told Racing.com. “Her best was really good, and she was in A1 order today. The feeling was she’d run a race, the barrier was a bit of a curveball. She’s tough, out to 2000 metres might be an option. She seems to go good if she’s fresh over the shorter trips, so she’s got a few strings to her bow. To dead-heat the Werribee Cup, fantastic.”

Royal Rendezvous makes winning debut

Royal Rendezvous (Credit: Racing Photos)

Cementing the ninth win in three days for Te Akau Racing, Royal Rendezvous (Royal Meeting) staged a terrific performance on debut in the Tobin Brothers Maiden 3YO (1000m) at Werribee on Sunday. The win followed three wins for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson on Friday at Riccarton, two on Saturday at Pukekohe, and three on Sunday at Te Aroha. Ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, Royal Rendezvous travelled strongly into contention rounding the turn, and powered home to reel in pacemaker Set Me Loose (Hanseatic) by 0.8 lengths at the line. Royal Rendezvous is from the second crop of Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit), and is a half-brother to four-time stakes winning stablemate Bellatrix Star (Star Witness). “Bellatrix Star has been a very good horse for the stable, and it’s great to see Royal Rendezvous win in the manner that he did,” said Walker. “He’s got a bit to live up to, being a half-brother, but he’s made a great start. He settled well in midfield from an awkward draw, travelled into the race as though he could be in the finish and let down really well in the straight. All the team in the Cranbourne stables are working really hard to achieve good results with the horses we’ve got. We’ve got a lot of nice young horses, not a lot that is racing at the moment, but we’re building for the future and Royal Rendezvous is one that certainly looks promising.”

Plaintiff goes two-from-two, three on the bounce for Grid Girl

Plaintiff (Credit: Bradley Photos)

Plaintiff, the highest-priced yearling by champion sire Zoustar sold in 2024, doubled her unbeaten tally on Sunday when landing a Benchmark 72 (1200m) at Rosehill.

Ridden by Jordan Childs, the first of a double for the jockey, the Peter Snowden-trained filly narrowly denied stablemate Nitro (Deep Field) by 0.2 lengths, following up her debut success over the same course and distance last month.

“I thought Nitro had her cold,” Snowden said. “But she just kept fighting and it’s a really good thing to see.

“I love horses that keep turning up, keep fighting and sticking their head out, it’s a really good sign to see. She really does look above average.”

Stakes races would now seem the goal for Plaintiff, who was a $2.2 million purchase for James Harron Bloodstock at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale out of Widden Stud.

Plaintiff is the second winner from three foals to race out of the Group 1-winning mare Prompt Response, who died earlier this year.

Childs would also go on to land another success aboard the Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Grid Girl in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1200m).

The five-year-old mare defeated Just Party by 0.1 lengths in the Benchmark 94 event, notching her third successive win.

"It worked out well from the wide gate and the plan was to be positive on her," Childs said.

"A couple of them wanted to go quick so I was happy to let them go and get a bit of cover. It was a good, tough win in the end because she got challenged when she was probably a bit out on her feet but she held on."

Mortal Halo with Magic Millions targets

The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained Mortal Halo (Better Than Ready) could be bound for next month's Magic Millions meeting after landing the Vinnie @ Yarraman Park Handicap (1500m) on Sunday's Rosehill card. Ridden by Reece Jones, the three-year-old colt scored his second win from his last three outings as he defeated Automne Tree (The Autumn Sun) by 0.6 lengths. "We've always had a big opinion of him but as a two-year-old he just didn't know where to put his legs," Archibald said. "He is better now and it is good to see him put them away." Mortal Halo has been tried at stakes level on three occasions, including for a tenth in June's J.J. Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m). "He looked almost a bit lost in front and I was happy when the other horse crossed in front and had something to chase down," Archibald added. The Archibalds are now contemplating the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) on January 17 for the colt. "He's one of the nicest colts I've sat on in a long time," jockey Reece Jones said. "He's so professional and a gentleman."

Wakefield enters calculations for dominant debut winner

One punter breathed a little easier following the Manco Maiden 2YO (1150m) at Te Aroha on Sunday, with their $10,000 outlay paying off when Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) romped to victory. The Fortuna Syndications-raced Lara Antipova had shown plenty of ability at the trials, finishing runner-up in her 800-metre heat at Ellerslie in October before winning over 800 metres at Avondale last month. She was subsequently backed into $1.80 favouritism in her debut on Sunday and duly delivered, beating Miss Perna (Satono Aladdin) by an emphatic eight lengths under Craig Grylls. Sam Bergerson, who trains Lara Antipova in partnership with Mark Walker, was impressed with her debut effort. “She was electric,” he said. “Her trials leading in had been good. There is still plenty of improvement and furnishing up we think, she still does a little bit wrong at home,” he said. “She was very professional today and hopefully there are some nice targets for her over the summer.” Stakes targets are now in the offing, which could come as soon as Trentham in a fortnight where she could contest the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m). “While they are up and going it is good to carry on,” Bergerson said. “The Wakefield is a quick turnaround, or the Eclipse [at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day]. They look like two nice initial potential targets. We will get her home and see how she pulls up and have a good chat with John [Galvin, Fortuna], Mark [Walker], Dave [Ellis, Te Akau principal] and the team, and work it out from there.”

Deja vu with The Dirty Dee

It was a case of deja vu for trainer Robbie Patterson with The Dirty Dee’s (Derryn) runner-up performance in the Graham’s Painters 1400 (1400m) at Trentham on Saturday. It was very similar to former stablemate Leica Lucy’s (Derryn) run in the same race last year, with both fillies hampered at the top of the straight before being pipped on the outside in the concluding stages. While frustrated The Dirty Dee had an obstructed run, Patterson is hoping it is a good omen, given Leica Lucy went on to record five consecutive stakes victories, culminating in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) in March. “That [check] took the momentum right out of her, it would have cost her the race,” Patterson said. “The same thing happened in the same spot [with Leica Lucy], so hopefully that’s an omen. I think going forward, the further she goes the better she will get. She was just off the nickel around the side, which is just telling us that she wants further.” The daughter of Derryn (Hinchinbrook) will step up to a mile in a fortnight to contest the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham, won last year by Leica Lucy, and she will continue to follow the same blueprint laid out by her former stablemate last season. “She has pulled up well from it so we will push forward to the Eulogy in two weeks,” Patterson said. Patterson’s disappointment was quickly quashed a race later when his promising four-year-old Thorax (Ribchester) extended his unbeaten streak to two when taking out the JR & N Berkett 1300 (1300m) in a tight finish. “He really toughed it out,” Patterson said. “He is the sort of horse that I don’t think he is ever going to win races by much, he waits for them and yesterday he really dug in when that horse [runner-up Classy Brahma] got to him. He is an exciting horse."

Cancelled ferry leaves plans in disarray for Loose Sally

Wingatui trainer Shankar Muniandy was hoping this weekend would be a career-defining one, but instead he has been left scratching his head in search of a new plan for his stable star Loose Sally (Turn Me Loose). The dual stakes winner was set to have her first tilt at elite-level in Saturday’s Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham, but those plans were quashed when her ferry was cancelled late last week. “We couldn’t get across [the Cook Strait], which was unfortunate,” Muniandy said. “She travelled to Christchurch and has arrived back home now. It was the first runner [in a Group 1] for me too, so it is frustrating.” The aborted trip hasn’t put Muniandy off crossing the Cook Strait again, with the Otago horseman eyeing another ferry crossing next month to head to Trentham with Loose Sally set to contest the Thorndon Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). While he has circled the Trentham mile, Muniandy is finding it difficult mapping out a path towards the January 17 feature. “We are still looking at the Thorndon Mile, but she will need another couple of runs under her belt before she goes there,” he said. “I am not really sure what the plan is with her now. It is hard to get a race with her with her rating. She is rated 79 and is racing in open class now. It all depends where you place them. Down here if you win one or two more races, her rating will be through the roof.”

Family double denied by barest of margins

Crackercol (outside) (Credit: Race Images)

The barest of margins denied full siblings Crackercol (Proisir) and Waitak a notable raceday double at Trentham on Saturday. Star gelding Waitak had to settle for the runner-up position in the Mufhasa Classic after a thrilling three-way finish to the day’s feature event that involved eventual winner Provence (Savabeel) and the third-placed La Crique (Vadamos). That was just two races after his younger brother Crackercol once again showed he was a high-class stayer in the making after the four-year-old came from three-wide in midfield throughout to steamroll his opposition in the Rothley 2100 (2100m), beating Sinhaman (Tivaci) by 1.3 lengths. Trainers Andrew Scott and Lance O’Sullivan don’t have any set plans in mind for Crackercol, preferring to take a race by race approach to ensure they don’t overtax the promising stayer after a lengthy campaign. “He [Crackercol] ran through winter and has just got better and better,” he said. “The last two months he has been racing consistently well and has clearly benefitted from a bit of age on his side and the patient approach we have been able to adopt with him. Like his older brother, we believe the best is yet to come and there is definitely a big race win in him if he keeps showing the progress he has made of late. That was a strong field on Saturday, with good lines of form, and he put them away in good fashion. They can sometimes be vulnerable the first time over ground, but he was very strong through the line. We will watch him and as soon as he gives us any sign he needs a break he will be off to the paddock, but at the moment he is thriving.”

Four for Kizuna

Shadai Stallion Station-based sire Kizuna (Deep Impact) scored his fourth individual Grade 1 winner when W Heart Bond (4 f ex Persistently by Smoke Glacken) took out Sunday’s Champions Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) at Chukyo. The four-year-old filly defeated Wilson Tesoro (Kitasan Black) by a nose with Ramjet (Majestic Warrior) another two and a half lengths away in third. Trained by Ryuji Okubo, the four-year-old is out of Persistently (Smoke Glacken), a winner of the 2010 Personal Ensign Stakes (Gr 1, 10f). Her daughter's top-level victory marked her seventh win from her eight starts for owner Silk Racing Co Ltd and breeder Northern Farm. In winning Sunday's Grade 1, W Heart Bond becomes the fourth elite-level winner for Kizuna, joining Songline, Justin Milano and Akai Ito. Based at the Shadai Stallion Station, the son of Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) will stand the upcoming breeding season for a fee of ¥20,000,000 (approx. AU$194,140).

FR: McKeever and Johnson go to €180,000 for Canneza

Group 1-winning owner Gary Johnson teamed up with Johnny McKeever at Arqana’s Vente d'Elevage to purchase Canneza (Siyouni) for €180,000 (approx. AU$315,540). The three-year-old filly is an Aga Khan’s homebred and has one win and a further two placings from six starts for trainer Francis Graffard. Out of the Listed-winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Canndera, Canneza is a half-brother to winner Canatiyann (Lope De Vega). “I’ve bought her for Gary Johnson, an Australian owner that already has some horses in training in France and that breeds in Australia,” McKeever told ANZ News. “She’ll be trained in Chantilly by Louis Blanchet. She’s a magnificent filly, from a great Aga Khan family, and we’re very happy. She’ll no doubt join the stud after her racing days are over.”

62 for American Pharoah

Former Coolmore shuttler American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) scored his 62nd individual stakes winner when the Todd Pletcher-trained Zany (2 f ex Mo’ Green by Uncle Mo) took out the Demoiselle Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) Aqueduct on Saturday. The two-year-old filly defeated Jumping The Gun (Gun Runner) by an impressive eight and a half lengths with another neck back to Concurrently (American Pharoah) in third. Bred by D J Stable, the filly was purchased by her now owners Repole Stable from the Taylor Made Sales draft for US$350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale in 2024. Zany is out of Grade 3 winner Mo’ Green (Uncle Mo), herself a half-sister to Listed winner She’screative (Creative Clause) as well as Listed-placed winner Brother In Arms (Yes It’s True). American Pharoah will stand at the Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan in 2026 for a fee of ¥4,000,000 (approx. AU$38,830).

51 for Gun Runner

Gun Runner (Candy Ride), Three Chimneys Farm’s marquee stallion, was provided with a 51st individual stakes winner when the Chad Brown-trained Paladin (2 c ex Secret Sigh by Tapit) prevailed in Saturday's Remsen Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Aqueduct. Raced by Coolmore and their partners, the colt was last seen making a winning debut and he preserved his unbeaten record with a two-length victory over Renegade (Into Mischief). Balboa (Not This Time) came home a further length and a half away in third. Bred by Summer Wind Equine, the colt was picked up by Coolmore’s MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for US$1.9 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale last year. Paladin is out of the unraced Tapit (Pulpit) mare Secret Sigh, who is a half-sister to dual Japanese Grade 1 winner Mozu Ascot (Frankel), the pair are out of Grade 2 scorer India (Hennessy). Gun Runner will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for an unaltered fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$376,390).

88 for Munnings

In winning the Elite Power Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Aqueduct, the Gregory D Sacco-trained Just Beat The Odds (5 g ex Bella D’Oro by Medaglia D’Oro) became the 88th individual stakes winner for Coolmore stalwart Munnings (Speightstown). The five-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat Acoustic Ave (Maclean’s Music) by two and three-quarter lengths. St. Jude (Speightster) came home a further length away in third. Just Beat The Odds is out of three-time winner Bella D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro), a half-sister to dual Grade 3 winner Belleski (Polish Numbers), the dam of fellow Grade 3 winner Keri Belle (Empire Maker). Munnings is due to stand the 2026 season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud base in Kentucky at a fee of US$45,000 (approx. AU$67,750).

US: Bishops Bay lands Cigar Mile Handicap

Having scored three times at Grade 3 level, Bishops Bay (5 h Uncle Mo - Catch My Drift by Pioneerof The Nile) added a first win in Grade 2 company to his record when he took out Saturday’s Cigar Mile Handicap (Gr 2, 8f) at Aqueduct. The Brad Cox-trained five-year-old stayed on strongly to narrowly defeat Mika (Catholic Boy) by a neck, with Crazy Mason (Coal Front) finishing a further four and a quarter lengths further back in third.

185 for Into Mischief

The Bob Baffert-trained Consequent (2 f ex Cognitive by Uncle Mo) followed up his winning debut with a victory in Saturday’s Starlet Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Los Alamitos and in the process became the 185th individual stakes winner for Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday). The Juddmonte homebred kept her perfect record intact when she defeated Cashed (I’ll Have Another) by a length, with a further four lengths back to Niamh (Gun Runner) in third. Out of the winning Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) mare Cognitive, Consequent is a sister to Listed winner Show Card. Further back this is the same family as elite-level winners Dream Rush (Wild Rush), Dreaming Of Julia (A.P. Indy) and Malathaat (Curlin). Into Mischief will stand the next northern hemisphere breeding season at Spendthrift Farm for an unchanged fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$376,390).

Danny Shum posts double as Romantic Warrior prepares to chase history in Hong Kong Cup

Gorgeous Win (Credit: HKJC)

Leo Schlink

Bidding to win a fourth successive Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) next Sunday with Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), Danny Shum laid the foundations for renewed success at the flagship meeting with a double at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Shum combined with Karis Teetan and Foremost Teddy (Fastnet Rock) in the Class 5 Ashley Handicap (1650m, dirt) before Gorgeous Win (Press Statement) prevailed in the Class 2 Chatham Handicap (1200m, dirt) to give Hugh Bowman a double as he prepares for the International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

Shum moved into outright third in the 2025/26 trainers’ championship with 20 wins behind Mark Newnham (24) and Caspar Fownes (21) as he prepares to saddle Romantic Warrior in search of a record-extending fourth Hong Kong Cup win – a feat which would propel the globetrotting galloper to a Hong Kong record 11th Group 1 triumph.

Bowman, who will ride Moments In Time (Lookin At Lucky), Helios Express (Toronado), Red Lion (Belardo) and Massive Sovereign (No Nay Never) in the four Group 1s at the Hong Kong International Races, will compete with 11 rivals at the four-race IJC in strong form after five wins across the last five meetings.

Having scored on John Size-trained Wukong Jewellery (Too Darn Hot) in the first section of the Class 4 Kimberley Handicap (1400m), Bowman was pleased with Gorgeous Win’s debut on dirt.

“It was a good win, he’s been out of form but he’s been feeling good at home on the track so it might have been a confidence thing with him,” Bowman said. “I feel he hasn’t been giving enough effort.

“His work on Thursday morning was very encouraging and I think the change to the All-Weather was the difference because today we saw him compete – I’m very proud of him.”

Frankie Lor notched his 250th win at Sha Tin when three-year-old first-starter Embrace Aberdeen (All Too Hard) scored an upset victory in the Class 4 Carnarvon Handicap (1200m) under Matthew Poon. Sent off at 59/1, the All Too Hard (Casino Prince) gelding prevailed by a short-head over Aurio (Capitalist).

“He [Embrace Aberdeen] looked like he was still a little bit fat but I'd trialled him five times already so it was time to put him in a race. Drawing (barrier) nine was a little bit tricky so I asked the jockey to follow the horse on his inside and go forward and he got him in a good position. To win was a surprise though,” Lor said. “You can see today he was still only around 80 per cent [fit], so I think he will improve from this race.”

The 13-time champion trainer Size sealed a brace with Wukong Jewellery and Stellar Express (Zoustar), who proved too strong in the Class 3 Middle Handicap (1000m), while Zac Purton also snared a double after striking aboard With A Smile (Merchant Navy) in the second section of the Class 4 Kimberley Handicap (1400m) for Chris So and the impressive Little Paradise (Toronado) in the Class 3 Salisbury Handicap (1400m) for Jimmy Ting.

By Toronado (High Chaparral), Little Paradise soaked up midrace pressure to emerge as a potential Four-Year-Old Classic Series contender.

“It was a really good effort, he had to do a bit of work early. the runners on the inside kept kicking up on a solid speed and then when I found my position, I had a horse three-wide come up outside me and get him back on the bit when I wanted him to relax and travel,” Purton said.

“So, with the weight on his back, to give a good kick and hang on was a great effort.”

Notthesillyone (Super One) posted his second course and distance success with victory in the Class 4 Austin Handicap (1200m, dirt) for Mark Newnham, impressing Luke Ferraris.

“He’s a horse that’s taken a while to acclimatise to Hong Kong. He’s definitely improved – he’s just one of those horses who took time to get used to the place,” Ferraris said.

“Mark and the team have done a great job with him. He’s come from the middle of Class 5 to winning in Class 4 and the way he went today with his demeanour suggests he could do it again with more weight. Really happy with him and looking forward to next time.”

Foremost Teddy rewarded his connections’ patience when the gelding dominated from the front to easily prevail. The Fastnet Rock (Danehill) gelding had logged six minor placings in 26 previous starts, but scored impressively under a positive Teetan ride.

Caspar Fownes’ Glory Cloud (Charm Spirit) followed suit under Ellis Wong to clinch the Class 5 Cameron Handicap (1200m), prevailing at his 20th attempt.

"Very happy, the horse has been with us a long time and had a lot of problems. I'd like to really thank the owners [Fung Pak Kei] for their patience – they're lovely people and I'm very happy I could get a winner for them,” Fownes said.

“Hopefully the horse can kick on, even if he's a bit older. Hong Kong is funny, sometimes these horses can improve, they take time and have a lot of issues and then [win].”

Vincent Ho limbered up for the IJC with victory on Dennis Yip’s Another World (Kermadec) in the Class 3 Mody Handicap (1650m, dirt) as the Kermadec (Teofilo) gelding posted his first win on the surface.

Hong Kong horse racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday night with the International Jockeys’ Championship.
