Inveterate winner Taken (Ardrossan) has the chance to prove he’s the real deal when he faces his sternest test to date in Pakenham’s $1 million slot race, The Supernova (1400m), on Saturday.

And while not underestimating the size of his task as he rises to open company under set weights conditions, trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr are confident the four-year-old won’t let his connections down.

Bought privately as a youngster by Price - who formerly trained the gelding’s Waikato Stud-based sire Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice) - and bearing the blue with the red V of managing owner Carl Holt, Taken was promising but frustrating through an initial campaign last spring.

From four runs he notched four minor placings, including a Moonee Valley second and a Caulfield third, and culminating in a second over 1200 metres at Pakenham as a short-priced favourite.

That last script was repeated when he returned from a spell in April, but since then, the penny appears to have dropped with a loud clink, with Taken unbeaten in his five subsequent starts.

He won his maiden over 1400 metres at Pakenham, before taking three three-year-old handicaps in metro class over 1600 metres, one at Sandown and two at Flemington.

What's On

While four straight wins is impressive in any grade, his resuming run on November 15 particularly stamped Taken’s quality.

Lining up in a 1400-metre Caulfield Benchmark 84 under 58 kilograms, Taken jumped from gate three for Ethan Brown but found himself three-wide without cover from the 1000 metres to the 600 metres just off the leading division, running seventh of 13, and was four wide from then on.

But he kept coming in the straight to eventually nab leader Catoggio (Written Tycoon) on the line, keeping his winning run intact with a 0.06-length victory.

The win was even more meritorious considering Taken resumed after only one jump-out, with another planned hit-out thwarted when a set of trials was cancelled.

“We missed a trial going in because of wet weather,” Kent Jnr told ANZ News. “Horses don’t win often when resuming after just one trial and sitting three-wide without cover. He did it very tough in running and while he didn’t win by a big margin, he still got it done.

“Early on, he was beaten favourite a couple of times and it took him six starts to win his maiden. But now, he doesn’t like to lose. He’s really come of age.

“I was still a bit on the fence after his three-year-old campaign. He was winning, but you’re beating up on moderate opposition in the winter as a three-year-old.

“But the way he’s returned has given me a lot of confidence he’s ready to go on with it. To win in that manner first-up, that gives me confidence that there’s more to come with him.”

Bred by New Zealand’s Bruce Perry and four fellow shareholders in Ardrossan, out of unraced mare Katherine Wright (Henrythenavigator), Taken showed ability early on, Kent Jnr said, but lacked power.

“He was very immature in that first campaign. He had a good frame with not much body,” Kent Jnr said. “So because he was lacking that strength, he wasn’t able to put races away. He was still building his confidence and perfecting his craft.

But the way he’s returned has given me a lot of confidence he’s ready to go on with it. To win in that manner first-up, that gives me confidence that there’s more to come with him

MICHAEL KENT JNR

“When he was placed at Caulfield in that prep, Mick questioned whether he had a strong 1400 metres in him. We brought him back to 1200 and he was beaten again.

“As he’s developed, the 1400 and the mile are no problem. Ethan Brown suggested last start we shouldn’t be afraid to try 2000. If he can get further than a mile, that’ll really open doors for him.”

Taken will attempt by far his toughest mission at start No.11 in the second edition of Pakenham’s lucrative Supernova. Holt owns a slot in the race, which has led to the gelding being sent in against several more proven rivals.

Bookmakers have him on the fourth line of betting at around the $12 mark. Joe Pride’s warhorse Private Eye (Al Maher) is a $2.10 favourite, running in the Ladbrokes slot. Last year’s winner Here To Shock (Shocking) is at $8 in the Carvallo Park slot. Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) is at $10, running in the slot of his trainers Lindsay Park, while OTI slot runner Zou Sensation (Zoustar) is also at $10.

Taken has the second-lowest rating in the field, on 86, so isn’t particularly well suited with 57.5 kilograms under the set weights scale, though at least that may be offset by having drawn barrier two of 14 for Jamie Mott.

“He’ll need to be on his best because it’s a very good edition this year,” Kent said. “The club have done a wonderful job to attract a high quality field, and this race will get more and more popular among better horses at set weights as it goes on.

“We’re the second-lowest rated horse in the race, but we felt he deserved his chance. He’s won his past five starts and he’s very progressive, so this was the sensible option given he won first-up.

“The 1400 [metres] is on the sharp side for him. These other horses have probably got superior turns of foot than him. But he’s had four weeks between runs, to keep the edge on him.

“There looks to be good speed in the race, he’s got a soft draw, so if we can get a good smother, then that’ll help him.”

Kent Jnr said Taken was also well suited to the uphill straight at Pakenham, where he has a win and two seconds from three starts.

“That uphill straight suits strong horses,” he said.

“Whilst he strung four wins together as a three-year-old during winter, that’s very different to open company as a four-year-old. In order for a horse to progress, they have to develop physically.

“We were looking for it, and he’s come back 40 kilos heavier this time in. He’s a lot stronger and is holding his body weight better. He’s able to eat more. When horses are eating well in high intensity training, that’s important.

“He just looks fantastic, and he’s definitely come on. He’s got to really run a personal best to win a race like this, which is going to be difficult, but he’s a winner. Any horse that wins five in a row, that tells you it’s progressive.

“He couldn’t be going better, and we’re extremely happy with him.”

The Price-Kent Jnr stable has high hopes of a two-state major race double on Saturday. At Randwick, they’ll saddle another emerging four-year-old - Sabaj (Manhattan Rain) - in the $2 million The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m).

The unfashionably bred gelding kicked off in Adelaide for Richard and Chantelle Jolly, winning his first three starts at Morphettville before seconds at Listed and Group 2 level.

Transferred to Price-Kent Jnr at Cranbourne, he resumed with a luckless sixth in the Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick before wins at his past two starts - in a 1600-metre Flemington Benchmark 84, and in the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m).

Like Taken in The Supernova, homebred Sabaj is the second-lowest rated horse in the 20-strong Ingham field. He’ll also start from the second-widest barrier, for Beau Mertens, but at least under the quality handicap conditions he only has to carry the minimum of 53 kilograms.

Bookmakers have him third-favourite at around $6. Ciaron Maher’s Group 1 winner Gringotts (Per Incanto) is a $4.40 favourite but has 61 kilograms and has drawn the gate outside Sabaj, while $4.80 chance Yorkshire (Snitzel), another on the minimum, has barrier 15.

“He’s great. We could not be happier with that horse,” Kent Jnr said of Sabaj.

“It’s a big task, it’s a big handicap over the Randwick mile. Twenty runners, and we’ve got an outside draw.

“But while that might be alarming to punters, I’ll take the ‘glass half full’ attitude because in all his victories he’s been back and wide down the middle of the track. That’s how he likes to race.

“He had an inside draw in the Silver Eagle and he’s still looking for a run. But in his subsequent two wins, he drew out.

“Hopefully, he won’t be too far back, but the horse couldn’t be better. It’s a tough race, but for the prize-money it’s going to be a lot of fun.

“He’s a very progressive horse, very exciting to be honest, and we’re just very lucky to have him.”

Berry seeking The Ingham success aboard Territory Express

Territory Express (Credit: Sportpix)

Two-and-a-half years after first trying to secure the ride, Tommy Berry will finally partner Territory Express (Territories), the talented but quirky gelding part-owned by his mother Julie, in Saturday’s $2 million The Ingham (Gr 2 ,1600m) at Randwick. The 2024 Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) winner lines up for his 25th start and, remarkably, Berry will leg aboard for the first time – a moment that has the jockey’s mother especially delighted. “She has been trying to get me on him for a couple of preparations, so she is very excited,” Berry said. Trained by close family friend Paul Niceforo, Territory Express has long shown stakes quality but barrier issues have blunted several preparations. However, this time in he has jumped cleanly in both outings: a fast-finishing third in the Ladies’ Day Cup (Listed, 1500m) and a respectable effort from a wide alley in The Gong (1600m). Drawn in gate nine on Saturday, Berry is optimistic he can enjoy a more economical run, and the chance to deliver a feature victory for his mother adds further incentive. “Dad obviously hasn't trained for a while now, so to win one for the family would be nice,” Berry said. “Mum has lived and breathed it since she left school at seventeen. At least the horse is jumping out now, and we know how good he is on his day. Hopefully we get the rub of the green and get the job done.” Berry has nine rides on the ten-race card, including Fire Star (Deep Field) for Peter Snowden in the Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) and Vatican (Wootton Bassett) for Chris Waller in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m).

Experience key for Widdup youngster in Inglis Nursery

Brad Widdup believes race experience and a soft draw give Internal Affairs (Home Affairs) the right platform to break his maiden in Saturday’s Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at Randwick.
A $440,000 yearling and the second-highest priced runner in the field behind $1.2 million debutant Vatican (Wootton Bassett), the son of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) was game on debut when fourth to Fireball (Snitzel) after working early from a wide gate. Widdup briefly considered sending him to the paddock but a sharp recovery convinced him otherwise. “I thought, do I tip him out or tick him over for this race? He has come through really well, so it was a no-brainer,” Widdup said. “It’s good prize-money, not a big field. He has well and truly got enough ability.” Internal Affairs has drawn barrier three and Widdup expects Tom Sherry to use the colt’s natural speed while still seeking cover. With six of the 11 runners making their debut, he is hopeful race experience proves decisive. “He is a pretty straightforward animal. He would have learned a lot the other day,” he said. “Unless you get something out of the box that is very good, race experience always helps.” Widdup also saddles Hyperbolic (Proisir) in the In Memory of Sam Kavanagh Handicap (1600m), confident the lightly raced mare can continue her progression after a strong last-start win at Rosehill. “We’ve been very patient with her, and now she’s at this age she should be cherry-ripe to go through her grades,” Widdup said. “She’s a nice mare and I’m more than hopeful she can go on with it.” Hyperbolic has won four of 12 starts, with Tommy Berry staying aboard.

Litt hoping for rain at Randwick

Richard Litt is welcoming Sydney’s forecast rain as he prepares Barber (Exceed And Excel) and Romeo’s Choice (Choistar) for Saturday’s Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick, confident both will take significant improvement on soft ground. “He absolutely loves the wet. The wetter the better,” Litt said of Romeo’s Choice. “Where he lacks a length-and-a-half on good ground, he’ll make that up by two or three lengths on soft ground. They’ve both drawn a little bit tricky, but if the rain comes, it might work in our favour.” By unfashionable sire Choistar (Choisir) and bred in the backyard of long-time owners, Romeo’s Choice has become one of the most endearing horses in Litt’s stable, earning more than $500,000 with seven wins and 15 placings from 40 runs. “He’s not a fashionably-bred horse and wasn’t an expensive yearling,” Litt said. “I get a great thrill out of him because he always tries. You never go to the races wondering if he’s coming today, he always shows up.” Formerly with Godolphin, Barber was picked up by Monarch Bloodstock online and immediately repaid their $215,000 investment with his Takeover Target Stakes (Listed, 1200m) win in May. Litt has purposely held the horses back to target the off-season, rather than trying to compete during the major carnivals. “We’re not hugely active during the carnival with topline horses, so this year we focused on aiming for this time of year that’s not as strong,” he said.

Post Impressionist to line up in the Pakenham Cup

Warrnambool trainer Simon Ryan will waste no time trying to recoup the purchase price of Post Impressionist (Teofilo), with the stable’s recent acquisition set to take his place in Saturday’s Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m). Bought for $225,000 online from Lloyd and Nick Williams and James Packer shortly after finishing seventh in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Post Impressionist will chase the Cup’s $180,000 winner’s cheque – which could offset the majority of that outlay. Formerly trained by William Haggas and later Anthony and Sam Freedman, Post Impressionist landed the N E Manion Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill in March, 2024 and has form around stronger opposition than he meets this weekend. “It’s silly to put them in the paddock,” Ryan said. “They can get sick, they can get injured, not come up, and it’s not as strong a race as what he’s been running in. Even if he could sneak into the money, it would give everyone a bit of confidence going forward.” Ryan said Post Impressionist arrived in outstanding condition from the Freedmans, and with the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) in May being the long-term target for owner Shane Morrissy, the team felt it made sense to press on while the horse is fit. “He was in great order when he came to me,” Ryan said. “It was just a matter of whether to give him a run as he’s been bought for the Warrnambool Cup. Shane is a big Warrnambool man, so while the horse is going well, we’ll try and get some prize money. It’s probably the last race he can run in before having a few weeks off.” Ryan reported the gelding had a quiet 2000-metre workout at Warrnambool over the weekend and said only a heavy track would keep him from lining up. Former Irish jockey Tom Madden takes the ride on Saturday.

Meagher chasing big payday at Pakenham

Dan Meagher is hoping Lim’s Kosciuszko (Kermadec) can deliver his biggest Australian success in Saturday’s $1 million The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham, as the former Singapore champion puts a challenging relocation behind him. Meagher arrived in Victoria on the back of a premiership-winning stint in Singapore, but the transition to Pakenham and Australia’s harsh winter brought early doubts. Lim’s Kosciuszko, one of the first horses he imported, ran well when third in stakes grade at Flemington before his campaign unravelled. “Winter hit, and I’d never been through winter,” Meagher said. “I ran him at 1400 metres on a patchy track and then dropped him back to 1100 – it was a sign of a trainer who pushed it when he wasn’t ready. I was disappointed with how I handled him. His coat wasn’t good and the winter took its toll.” Meagher admits he briefly lost confidence but says getting back to familiar systems has steadied both trainer and horse. “I’ve learned to back myself,” he said. “I had a lot of success in Singapore against very good trainers and it never fazed me. Coming back here, into an environment you’re not used to, you start second guessing yourself. I had to remember I’d been pretty successful before. I just needed to go back to what I knew, and my last five runners have shown that.” Lim’s Kosciuszko now runs in the Moody Racing slot, having closed strongly for fourth first-up in the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield. “I really appreciate that we’re running in Peter Moody’s slot,” Meagher said. “To get asked by someone of his calibre is a huge boost.” The eight-year-old is expected to relish the rise to 1400 metres. “We were so close but so far first-up, but I was rapt with his run,” Meagher said. “He was in front until the last 100 metres and pulled up great. At this stage of his life, 1200 to a mile suits him, so this is right in his zone.”

Trip away for Gelagotis pair

Typhoon Harmony (Credit: Racing Photos)

Peter Gelagotis has opted to leave the comforts of home at Pakenham, instead sending Typhoon Harmony (Written Tycoon) and Rubology (Rubick) across the border in search of improved fortunes at Gawler on Saturday. Both horses line up over 1500 metres, with Gelagotis confident conditions and placement will give each horse the chance to show their best. Typhoon Harmony brings two unflattering zeros on paper, but Gelagotis has been anything but disappointed with his Moonee Valley and Caulfield runs. “I think both runs have been outstanding with no luck,” he said. “He’s been building fitness. It’s his third run back and he gets out to the 1500 metres. I don’t think he could be placed better.” The nine-year-old arrives in Adelaide off a pair of strong trials. “I think the horse is going as well as he’s ever gone,” Gelagotis said. “He had a really good prep last time in for an eight-year-old, and now he’s nine he’s still going well.” Gelagotis is equally hopeful Rubology can convert promising sectionals into a tangible result. “His runs have been good, but you look at his form, it says seven, seven, seven,” he said. “But if you analyse his sectionals, he’s run top three for his last 600 metres. He finds the line, but he gets too far back. He’s sluggish out of the gates. He’s sound, he’s well, he attacks the line, but he just runs out of room. Whether he’s looking for a trip…all his jockeys say, ‘don’t step him up,’ so I’ll give him this one, and if it doesn’t work, then I’ll step him out.”

Tasoraay bidding to emulate stablemate in The Gateway

Kris Lees has elected to chase a $300,000 payday in Brisbane after progressive four-year-old Tasoraay (Tassort) came up with barrier 20 at Randwick, confirming the gelding will instead contest The Gateway (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. A dual acceptor, Tasoraay was originally in the mix for the Saddles @ Mount White Handicap (1400m) in Sydney before the wide draw forced Lees’ hand. “We will send him up. It’s good prize-money and he’s in form,” Lees said. “He drew wide in Sydney, so we’ll give him his chance up there.” Winner of three of 11 starts, Tasoraay arrives off a gritty 60-kilogram victory over 1250 metres at Canterbury and carries a profile not unlike former stablemate Dream Hour (Dawn Approach), who won The Gateway at big odds in 2023 before being aimed at the Provincial-Midway Championships. Lees expects Tasoraay to follow a similar path. “He will probably have a freshen after this and prepare for the Provincial Championships. He profiles like one of those type of horses,” he said. Victory on Saturday would also come with a valuable bonus: automatic entry into the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m). Lees isn’t looking too far ahead but admits such a carrot is hard to ignore. “We won it [The Gateway] a couple of years ago with Dream Hour and we went that way,” he said. “It’s a big jump from this race to a Stradbroke, but with a free ticket, you’d have to consider it.”

Archibalds The Gateway runner Tuned up

The Annabel and Rob Archibald team will bank on in-form sprinter Tuned (Zoustar) to secure a coveted automatic berth in next year’s $3 million Stradbroke Handicap when he lines up in The Gateway at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The stable elected to scratch Waku Waku (Brutal), who was also accepted for a Benchmark 70 over the same trip, with assistant trainer Todd Pollard confirming she wasn’t suited under the weight-for-age conditions of The Gateway. That leaves the promising Tuned as the stable’s sole representative, and the four-year-old arrives in peak form after lumping 60 kilograms to score at Rosehill over 1300 metres last Sunday, his fifth win from just 12 starts. Backing up within a week for the first time and travelling north are the only queries, but the Archibalds are confident the son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) is up to the challenge. “It’s hard not to back up Tuned, he’s a really good horse and is in good form,” Pollard told Racing Queensland. “He’ll have no issues with weight-for-age. It’s just the travelling and the quick back-up that we hope he will overcome.” From barrier three, Tuned will be partnered by Ben Thompson, and Pollard expects the gelding to measure up in what looks a thin edition of the race. “It doesn’t look a very strong field, but Boomtown Boss and Ready To Schipp look the dangers,” he said. Tuned isn’t new to Queensland, having finished third in May’s Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) on heavy ground. Since being gelded he has returned a polished performer, winning two of his three spring runs. “He was very good early in the winter but a little disappointing later on,” Pollard said. “He’s come back a much better horse since being gelded. If he can overcome the travel and the back-up, he should run very well.”

Home Affairs colt lands trial at Caulfield

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr look to have another sharp juvenile on their hands after Guest House (Home Affairs) produced a stylish winning performance in the sole juvenile trial at Caulfield on Thursday. A $270,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling from Newgate Farm, the colt jumped cleanly for Beau Mertens and travelled sweetly on-speed before extending late to score by 1.5 lengths over Invincible Son (Farnan), with Starlume (Zoustar) another 0.1 lengths back in third. Guest House is the sixth foal out of the Group 2-placed Flamboyant Lass (Stratum), a mare who has already produced four winners including stakes-placed Nitrous (Deep Field). Flamboyant Lass is also a sister to Group 2-winning juvenile Attention. Connections of Guest House are expected to target a summer juvenile race in the coming weeks as they plot a path towards the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in January.

Cool Archie on course for MM 3YO Guineas

Cool Archie (Credit: Magic Millions)

Group 1 winner Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) signalled he is on track for a short but targeted summer preparation with a sharp trial at Ipswich on Wednesday, as he heads towards the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) next month. The Chris and Corey Munce-trained colt, returning from a six-month break following his J.J. Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) victory in June, cruised behind the speed under regular rider Martin Harley before slicing through on the rail to win his 1000-metre heat in 58.67s, closing off in 34.20s.
“It was good, everything went to plan,” Corey Munce told Racing.com. “He had a good break and has come back well. He’s still got maturing to do, but we’re really happy with him.” Cool Archie trialled in blinkers, but Munce indicated raceday gear remains undecided. “His best form was without them and we’ll probably leave them off, but we just wanted to have a look.”
A $100,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for Mick Malone Bloodstock and owners including Max Whitby, Cool Archie has already banked $1.6 million from five wins in nine starts. The stable will resume him in the Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben on December 20, followed by the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) two weeks later before his grand final at the Gold Coast on January 17. “It’s only a three-run campaign,” Munce said. “He’ll probably meet some fitter horses first-up, but the Vo Rogue and the Guineas are where we expect him to shine.” No firm plans are in place beyond the Magic Millions, with the team set to assess the colt post-campaign.

Whearty to try his luck in Australia

Irish jockey Robert Whearty has begun a summer riding stint with Ciaron Maher at Cranbourne, following encouragement from compatriots Dylan Browne McMonagle, Niall McCullagh and trainer Gavin Cromwell. The 21-year-old arrived in Melbourne three weeks ago and has quickly settled into life at Victoria’s premier stable. “It seemed like a good idea, so I reached out to Ciaron’s office via email and here we are,” Whearty told Racing.com. “Everyone’s very friendly, I’m riding nice horses, and it’s a great opportunity to learn in a different part of the world.” The Meath-born rider has ridden for Irish trainers Noel Meade and Ger Lyons, and last year finished runner-up in the Irish apprentice championship. He recently outrode his claim after passing 95 career wins. Whearty had his first Australian race ride on Sunday, finishing second at Stony Creek on the Maher-trained Cuttin’ Class (Written Tycoon), and has further opportunities this week at Kyneton, Cranbourne and Pakenham, the latter aboard debutant Perfect Dismount (Acrobat) on Saturday. “The races are run a little differently to back home,” he said. “You probably get a bit more room here. It’s all a learning experience and hopefully I can adapt, get plenty of rides and ride loads of winners.”

New Zealand

Well Written booked for TAB slot in The NZB Kiwi

Well Written (Written Tycoon) is locked in for the NZ$4 million The NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) after connections of the unbeaten filly signed up for the TAB slot, held by Entain New Zealand. The daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) has won all three of her career starts in dominant fashion, topped off by her New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) victory at Riccarton last month. The Cambridge-based filly will now be set for the southern hemisphere's richest three-year-old race on March 7, 2026 at Ellerslie, with lead-up runs planned on Boxing Day and in the Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) in January, before The NZB Kiwi. Entain Australia and New Zealand CEO Andrew Vouris was thrilled that Well Written’s connections had chosen the TAB slot for her bid to become the winner of the second running of The NZB Kiwi. “Well Written has already stamped herself as a brilliant talent and has gained a following on both sides of the Tasman,” Vouris said. “Through our broadcasting, content and wagering teams, we can’t wait to introduce her to an even bigger audience across Australasia, with an incredibly bright future ahead of her.” Well Written’s trainer Stephen Marsh said the Entain team had built a comprehensive plan to elevate the interest around the race, and around Well Written. “Entain really impressed us with the scope of what they can bring to the partnership, and as someone who grew up in the New Zealand racing industry, it feels right to link up with the iconic TAB brand for this massive race,” Marsh said. “Well Written has already taken her band of supporters on an amazing journey, and we’re sure it will go to the next level with Entain’s support.”

Blue Sky At Night seeking to defend Waikato Cup crown

Summer has arrived, and Shelley Hale is hoping so too will Blue Sky At Night’s (Shamexpress) form as she gets set to defend her crown in Saturday’s Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Te Rapa. Her victory in last year’s running kicked off a lucrative summer, which culminated in victory in the Avondale Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), a double Hale is hoping to repeat. “We will be trying hard,” the Cambridge trainer said. While pegged as a wet-tracker earlier in her career, Hale said Blue Sky At Night has shed that tag over the last couple of seasons. “Earlier in her career people could have suggested that she was possibly a wet-tracker, but she had a good summer last year so fingers crossed it is similar this year,” she said. While the Shamexpress (O’Reilly) mare has been unplaced in all three of her starts this preparation, Hale said they have been luckless runs, and she is hoping to take luck out of the equation on Saturday after drawing ideally in barrier four. “She is on a similar plan to last season, we are hitting it fourth-up,” Hale said. “She is racing well but has been lacking a bit of luck. We hope it is our turn to have the luck on our side this time. She won’t have to do any work at all [from barrier four] to take up a nice position hopefully, and she gets a nice, light weight [53 kilograms], she is still in a very good place in the handicaps.” While Blue Sky At Night holds a nomination for next month’s Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), Hale said she will likely bypass the Trentham feature in favour of focussing on the Avondale Cup a few weeks later. “I don’t think she stayed the two miles in the Auckland Cup when we tried her so we will probably go to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and then she can have a little freshen before having one run into the Avondale Cup and see if we can hit that one again too.”

Progressive Mollify loving life in New Zealand

Mollify (Credit: Race Images)

Emerging stayer Mollify (So You Think) looks to have another gilt-edged opportunity to further her record on Friday and progress toward more lucrative middle-distance assignments. The Cambridge Stud-bred and owned daughter of So You Think (High Chaparral) has thrived in a more rural environment since returning from Australia and promises another bold showing in Twilight Cup (2100m). Mollify could kick-start a potentially lucrative weekend for the farm and private trainer Lance Noble, with Jaarffi (Iffraaj), Frostfair (Written Tycoon) and Daring Dame (Almanzor) in action at Te Rapa on Saturday. She has won two of her last three starts, with a placing in-between, and impressed most recently at Pukekohe, where she successfully debuted over ground. “It looks the perfect race for her, she’s hit her straps and it was a very good win last time so it fits in nicely for her,” Noble said. “After this, she can either go to the Dunstan Stayers’ or we may even consider the Queen Elizabeth on New Year’s Day.” Mollify was previously in Victoria with Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, and from a handful of appearances broke her maiden at Cranbourne and was twice placed. “She came back at the end of her three-year-old career, Peter said she might not measure up to black-type races over there, but he didn’t give her too many starts,” Noble said. “She has come home and developed and with the extra six months she has physically matured and the farm environment here definitely helps mares. It’s nice and relaxing for them and haven’t got the stress of a big training centre with a lot going on. I’m not saying I’ve improved the horse but rather benefitted from the extra time she’s been given and Peter hadn’t over-raced her.”

Hurdle unearths another exciting sprinter

Nikki Hurdle had the ride of her life with Group 1 performer Express Yourself (Shamexpress), and just six months after her retirement, the Palmerston North horsewoman looks to have her hands on another exciting sprinter. Express Yourself recorded six wins and eight placings from 22 starts, highlighted by her runner-up performance in last year’s Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m), where she was piloted by Hurdle’s jockey son, Ryan Hurdle. Her syndicate of owners offered her on Gavelhouse earlier this year, where she was purchased by Wairarapa thoroughbred nursery Little Avondale Stud for $102,500. “Express Yourself is now in-foal to Per Incanto. Little Avondale bought her off us and we are very excited, she is going to leave great foals,” Hurdle said. While Wairarapa is Express Yourself’s new home, it was also the home of former stablemate Falcrests Belle’s (Darci Brahma) eye-catching 7.5-length maiden win over 1000 metres on Wednesday. The four-year-old mare had shown Hurdle plenty of promise at home, but had yet to show that same talent on raceday, finishing last on debut at Tauherenikau in January before resuming this spring with placings at New Plymouth and Tauherenikau. It was at her last-start placing that proved to be the turning point for Falcrests Belle, with senior hoop Kate Hercock partnering her for the first time and coming back to Hurdle post-race with some crucial feedback. “I thought she would win on debut, she really disappointed us, and she went two good races after that but still a bit below what we were expecting,” Hurdle said. “After her last start Kate came in and said, ‘we have to change her gear, she is not breathing properly, she is rolling her tongue back’. It made sense because that is exactly how she was racing, she was running out of puff.”

HK: Ka Ying Rising draws unfamiliar barrier in Hong Kong Sprint

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) has been thrust into unknown territory after drawing barrier one for the first time in his career as he attempts to defend his Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) title at Sha Tin on Sunday. Conceding it was not ideal to draw the inside barrier in the 13-horse field, trainer David Hayes said the world’s highest-rated sprinter simply had to jump fast and either take a sit or lead if Zac Purton is unhappy with the pace. “I think Zac will be very happy,” Hayes said. “It’s more important what Zac thinks this time from the barrier because he has to do the job. I will leave it to him. The horse jumps fast and he puts him in a spot, and then hopefully he gets a trouble-free run. You can get blocked in from barrier one. I don’t think he will. If he jumps fast, he can have a nice easy run to the home turn.” Hayes said the only complication that could arise is if Ka Ying Rising jumps slowly, which he has rarely done. “That would be the only concern but lately he is so fast out of the gates in his first 100 metres he gets himself in a very comfortable position,” Hayes said. After already lowering the Sha Tin 1200-metre record twice, Zac Purton has warned not to expect Ka Ying Rising to again better his record of 1m 07.20s on Sunday. Purton believes it will be a typical Hong Kong sprint run at a fast tempo, and said the faster, the better; but he doesn’t expect records to tumble. “I’m not thinking it is going to be a slowly-run race, but do I think they are going to break the track records as well? No, I don’t,” Purton said. “The winter grass has come through, it’s a bit softer and the track is a bit thicker, and no doubt they’ll put a little bit more water on the track as well. They usually do for this meeting, so I don’t think a track record is going to be seen. As long as we win the race, tick it off and move on to the next.”

HK: Hong Kong Cup draw no concern for Romantic Warrior’s connections

Connections of Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) indicated no concerns with being drawn in barrier two as the stage was set for the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Danny Shum’s hometown hero is set to face six rivals this weekend in his attempt to lift the title for the fourth time in a row. “Draw two is good,” Shum said. “It’s a small field, so it’s not a big deal. It means we can be versatile with the strategy.” Romantic Warrior has had an eventful year, beginning with his courageous second to Forever Young (Real Steel) in the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) in Riyadh and filling the same spot, a nose behind Soul Rush (Rulership), in the Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) at Meydan. However, it was at the end of May that Romantic Warrior had a screw inserted into his left front leg after an injury had been discovered. The ten-time Group 1 winner made a flawless return to action on his recent lead-up start in the Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m). “I was so sad when he had the surgery. It was one screw, it wasn’t too bad for him, but for me, it was very bad,” Shum continued. “I’m very proud of him. In Hong Kong, not just racing people, everyone knows him.” Looking at the race, Shum said: “I haven’t studied the field because we hadn’t had the draw, but I will be doing some work on it. His form is better than last time, he’s improving. He’s finished his final gallop and will only do some slow canter work now.” Romantic Warrior’s owner Peter Lau took to the stage at Thursday’s barrier draw in the Sha Tin parade ring and said: “He had the surgery but he seems to have recovered well. When he came back, to see what he did, I was very happy and relaxed.”

HK: Newnham confident My Wish can rebound in Hong Kong Mile

A breakthrough Group 1 success is in the sights of My Wish (Flying Artie) as last year’s Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) hero bids to step up to the elite level in the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday. The standout talent from last year’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which included two agonising defeats in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) and Hong Kong Derby (2000m), My Wish proved he had claims for being Hong Kong’s next star miler with a promising fourth in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in April. Two victories at the beginning of this campaign in the Celebration Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) and Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m) underlined that impression, and his trainer Mark Newnham insists there were legitimate excuses for his fourth-place finish in the Jockey Club Mile under regular rider Luke Ferraris last month. “He brought about his own undoing in the Jockey Club Mile,” the trainer said in a press conference held at Sha Tin Racecourse on Thursday. “He was too fresh, too keen, and going five weeks in between runs isn’t ideal for him. His peak performances are after three weeks. Even though he’d had a good, solid trial and brilliant work, he was just a bit above himself and you could see that going into the barriers. Luke held on to him as long as he could, but he couldn’t put the two lengths on them as he had done in his first two runs this season. On a very solid tempo, he pulled, and that’s not usual for him, so it just goes to show he was above himself. He was beaten a length, so he didn’t run badly, but he didn’t run up to expectations as a 1.4 favourite. He’s done really well. He’s in good condition, he’ll do a bit more again tomorrow and that’s his usual lead-up to a race. His first two wins of the season he had his final gallop on a Friday.”

HK: Ensued bids for more success for Wong family in Hong Kong Vase

Renowned in Hong Kong racing for horses named with the prefix “En”, Ada Wong, owner of Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) hope Ensued (Lemon Drop Kid), says her family are always keen on sourcing better quality horses and that Ensued is one of their success stories. The five-year-old import will make his second appearance in the Hong Kong Vase after finishing fourth behind Giavellotto (Mastercraftsman) from gate eight last year. This year he will step away from draw seven. Wong said: “I always keep the faith in my horses and hopefully he will run a better race this year. Having said that, it’s always my great honour to participate in the Hong Kong International Races as it is such a prestigious event. Gate seven looks good to me.” Pre-import, Ensued raced three times overseas, where he was raced by the Wong family, and despite not winning, they already had a reasonable opinion of the horse, believing that he could be something special. Wong said: “He ran well in his three starts, finishing close, and we had confidence he would further improve." Ensued made a quick impact in Hong Kong, winning three races from his first four starts, all at Sha Tin. In that season, he also ran third in the Hong Kong Classic Cup. Ensued took another giant step forward in his second season, winning the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m). Following that success, all of his subsequent 11 starts came in Group races, including a second to Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) in the 2025 Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). “He looks to have improved race-by-race this season, and I look forward to a forward showing from the horse this Sunday,” Wong said.

CAN: Sergei Prokofiev moves to Canada

Last year's British champion first-season sire Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy) has been bought back by his breeder David Anderson of Anderson Farms and will continue his career at Ballycroy Bloodstock in Canada. Sergei Prokofiev has stood at Whitsbury Manor Stud since his retirement in 2021 and he became the leading freshman sire last year. Among his leading progeny is Flying Five Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) winner and new Irish National Stud resident Arizona Blaze, as well as Listed scorer Enchanting Empress, both of whom hailed from his first crop. The son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) was the first seven-figure yearling Anderson sold when he made US$1.1 million to MV Magnier at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Sergei Prokofiev went on to land the Cornwallis Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) and Rochestown Stakes (Listed, 5f) at two for Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore, as well as finishing third in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) to Calyx (Kingman). At three, Sergei Prokofiev captured the Cork Stakes (Listed, 5.5f). Sergei Prokofiev will stand for CA$10,000 (approx. AU$10,890).

Ka Ying Rising's breeder makes the journey of a lifetime with Hong Kong's sprinting sensation

Tom Peacock

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Fraser Auret has made a special journey this week in order to see Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) for the first time since he left his former home in rural New Zealand.

The world's best sprinter, his reputation now sky-high after claiming The Everest at Randwick (Gr 1, 1200m) in October, was bred by Auret and his wife Erin, who have a training centre near Marton in the country's North Island and operate as Grandmoral Lodge Racing.

Auret took an unfurnished Ka Ying Rising to a jumpout at nearby Levin, where he caught the eye of agent Mike Morais, who bought him on behalf of the Hayes family's Lindsay Park operation. After landing a trial at Moe in the middle of 2023, Ka Ying Rising was switched to David Hayes' Hong Kong stable.

Should he win Sunday's Longines Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) for the second consecutive year, for which he is a prohibitively short-priced favourite, he will take his unbeaten streak to 16. It will also see him join local legend Golden Sixty's (Medaglia D’Oro) mark and stand one shy of the jurisdiction record of 17 straight wins set by Silent Witness (El Moxie).

"We've come on our own back," said Auret. "We'd always planned to come and see him at some stage before, but we run quite a busy stable, so it was about working out logistics for when we could get away.

"We decided it was either head to Australia for The Everest or come here. We'd never been to Hong Kong before and we thought it would be fantastic to come and see him here."

The cheerful Auret hails from a breeding dynasty, as his parents Nigel and Adaire run Letham Stud in Wanganui, but producing Ka Ying Rising from the useful Per Incanto (Street Cry) mare Missy Moo came about by chance.

"It's remarkable to think he's the first horse we ever bred, so he's very special from that perspective," he said.

"We certainly didn't set out to breed what we ended up breeding, but he was such a beautiful horse all the way through. We've had so much joy and fun watching him race through the years. We've got three children who all love him to bits, so every time he races there's always a bit of a gathering at home.

"Missy Moo was a mare we trained, she won five races but her owner didn't want to breed and it was just an opportunistic chance.

"My mother and father bred for about 30 years, so it was something that was always on the cards at some stage, and that opportunity presented itself."

Although Auret has been quoted in the past as saying he was reasonably well paid for Ka Ying Rising, the sad thing is that there are no more of them waiting in the wings.

"The mare had only the two foals," he explained. "The other one, his younger half-brother Ka Ying Glory, is also here. He's racing on Sunday too, but he needs to talk to his older brother about how to run because he hasn't quite worked that part out yet!

"We sadly lost the mare and we wanted to get some connection to the family so we went looking for a sister or a relative, but, would you believe, the mother had about nine brothers and no sisters. So unfortunately it's the end of the line."

Auret has been invited by Hayes to go and see Ka Ying Rising at his stables in Sha Tin and his breeder is a little surprised, as well as delighted, as to how it has all turned out.

"It's just been wonderful watching him develop," he said. "The mare was more of a mile-and-a-quarter horse, she wasn't a sprinter, but she was a good-quality horse.

"He's certainly furnished an awful amount more. He wasn't really a sprinter-looking type, he was a bit weak and big and gangly, but you could see even on the TV that each season he was that little bit bigger and stronger, and now to the point where he's a fully mature horse."

Auret has a string of around 50 and will be attempting to keep an eye on runners back home during this week. The quest for the next Ka Ying Rising begins in earnest and the operation is feeling the benefit in different ways.

"Selling horses has always been a very big part of our model," he said. "With racing in New Zealand, it's almost like a part of the culture that you need to sell horses to survive. Even through selling him, we've made some wonderful contacts.

"Unfortunately, he's now got us a bit roped in and we've got about six mares now, having started with just the one.

"I'll probably spend the next 30 years trying to breed another one and not be able to! But it's beautiful watching them grow and develop as foals; we've really enjoyed it."

The Chris Waller-trained Michelangelo (Trapeze Artist) got off the mark at sixth time of asking when he broke his maiden in a 1350-metre at Wyong on Wednesday, handing his sale-bound sister a timely update in the process.

The three-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat Daphnes (Street Boss) by 0.1 lengths with another 0.5 lengths back to Lapis Lazuli (Microphone) in third.

“He's not so straightforward, but he does have nice staying potential,” winning rider Tim Clark said.

“I'm sure he will improve when Chris [Waller] gets him to do things right as he's still doing it a little bit wrong, but obviously he was good enough to get away with it today.

“A tight turning track like this probably wasn't really suitable either, so there was good merit in the win. I'm sure now he's got the break-through and he can go on with it.”

A $160,000 buy for Tim Roberts Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Michelangelo is out of Waltzing Wodka (Sebring).

Waltzing Wodka is a dual-winning sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed mare Seaburge as well as Group 2 scorer Catch A Fire, while she also counts Group 2 winner Zloties (Snitzel) among her half-siblings.

The mare’s two other winners are headed by Listed scorer Pinito (Trapeze Artist), who also finished second in this year’s Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

Widden Stud will offer Michelangelo’s sister as Lot 433 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale next March.
